Petition launched after toddler finds used needle

A LYME Regis mother has launched a campaign for sharps bins to be installed in public toilets in the town, after her three-year-old son found a used needle on the street. Child-minder and mother of three, Jayne Mace, launched the petition to ensure needles are disposed of correctly, after her youngest son Morgan picked up a needle and put it in his mouth, having found it on the footpath between Anning Road and Staples Terrace. The family now face a painstaking threemonth wait to find out if Morgan has been infected with anything from the needle. REPORT, PAGE 2

Councils in dispute over beach area A SPLASH of colour has been added to Lyme Regis’ seafront gardens, thanks to a successful new lighting scheme launched by the town council. The lights were switched on by the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, earlier this month, having been designed by Lymelight - see page 7 for full report. Photo by Richard Austin

Dog discrimination

PETITION LAUNCHED TO STOP BAN OF DOGS FROM BEACH A PETITION has been launched to stop dogs being banned from Lyme Regis’ main beaches.

The petition, launched by local resident and dog owner Debbie Conibere, says that the town council’s suggestion of banning dogs from the sandy beach and Cobb Gate shingle beach would discriminate against responsible owners and well-behaved animals, and

(PSPO) by the now defunct West Dorset District Council in October 2017, dogs are currently allowed on Lyme’s main sandy beach without a lead between October 1 and May 1. Lyme Regis Town Council objected to the PSPO when it was first introduced, with members arguing that dogs should be kept on leads, and a number of complaints from the public about dogs defecating, urinating and being out of control

on the sandy beach have also been received. Following an incident in which a 12-year-old boy was bitten by a dog on the beach in December 2018, further calls for reconsideration of the policy were made. Councillors have now said on more than one occasion that they would like to see dogs completely banned from both the sandy beach and Cobb Gate shingle beach all

THE Mayor of Lyme Regis has described the relationship between the town council and new Dorset Council as “broken”, in light of an ongoing dispute over land at Monmouth Beach. The dispute stems from an area of town council-owned land, adjacent to the newlyextended harbourmaster’s office, which has been taken over for additional boat storage and car parking, with a wooden storage facility also built alongside the Cobb wall. Town councillors have expressed frustration with Dorset Council’s lack of response to their complaint regarding the use of the land, which one member described as a “goldmine”. REPORT, PAGE 10
