£100,000 appeal launched for Mary Anning statue A LONG-awaited crowdfunding campaign, with the aim of raising money for a statue of palaeontologist Mary Anning in Lyme Regis, was launched last week. Mary Anning Rocks has long been campaigning for a statue of Lyme’s famous fossil hunter, gaining international interest with the likes of Sir David Attenborough and author Tracey Chevalier among its supporters. Its crowdfunding campaign, with a target of £100,000, finally went live last Friday and has already raised more than £27,000 in its first week. REPORT, PAGE 3

Proposal to twin Lyme with Gibraltar

LYME Regis Town Council has considered a request that the town be twinned with Gibraltar. Local resident Nigel Marsh, who has been visiting the British Overseas Territory bordering Spain’s south coast for 60 years, put forward the request for a formal twinning relationship. REPORT, PAGE 7

SPARKLING LIGHTS DISPLAY BRING FESTIVE CHEER TO TOWN LYME Regis Christmas lights display was switched-on a week ahead of schedule to bring some festive joy to the town.

on Saturday morning with no ceremony, but a small, socially-distanced event was held in the late afternoon to light up the 30-foot Christmas tree donated by Penn Farm. Local fundraiser Joshua Denning was given the honours of lighting the tree, having helped raise £2,700 towards the display by sell-

ing raffle tickets in recent weeks. The event was also attended by the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Brian Larcombe MBE, mayoress Wendy Larcombe, town crier Alan Vian and members of the Lyme Regis Christmas Lights Committee. The mayor said the stunning display proved that Lyme “will not be
