Fossil Festival lights up the seafront

LYME Regis Fossil Festival kicked off the town’s busy calendar of major events over the weekend. The festival started on Friday evening with a visually impressive lantern parade along the seafront, and included a programme of lectures, music, fossil walks and hands-on activities led by the science industry’s leading organisations and experts, including the Natural History Museum. Deputy mayor loses seat SIX NEW FACES ON TOWN COUNCIL AFTER LOCAL ELECTION A SURPRISE result following last week’s local election saw Lyme Regis deputy mayor Steve Miller lose his seat on the town council.

In last Thursday’s town council election, in which there were 16 nominations for 14 seats, Mr Miller, who was co-opted onto the council in 2015, only polled 365 votes. He had chaired the council’s most influential committee,

Strategy & Finance, and served as deputy mayor for two years. The other councillor to lose his seat was Sean Larcombe, who polled 398 votes. Top of the poll was a fairly new councillor, former lifeboatman and coastguard Graham Turner with 691 votes, beating Cheryl Reynolds by just one vote. Councillor Reynolds also con-

tested the seat for Lyme Regis and Charmouth on the new Dorset Council, which was won by her brother Daryl Turner (see page 2). Current mayor Michaela Ellis came third, polling 611 votes and her daughter Kelsey polled 457 votes and becomes the town’s youngest ever councillor at the age of 19. Kelsey was among six new candidates who all won seats on the town council.

They also included 20-year-old Leon Howe, polling 426 votes on a Labour ticket. Leon is the son of former Lyme councillor Rikey Austin, who stood unsuccessfully in the county election, also standing for Labour. Other new members elected were Belinda Bawden (508 votes); David Ruffle (523 votes); Gillian Stammers (513 votes); and David Sarson (502 votes). CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Firearms and drugs seized in police raids FIREARMS, cash and suspected drugs were seized by police following a series of raids in Charmouth and Axminster on Tuesday, May 7. A joint operation between forces in Devon and Cornwall and Dorset – involving more than 40 officers and separate firearms teams – saw warrants executed at six addresses. Searches of the premises took place and money, firearms and a large quantity of suspected drugs were seized. A 62-year-old man from Axminster was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and possession of a firearm and has been released under police investigation. Two men, aged 19 and 34, both from Charmouth, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and have been released under police investigation. A 49-year-old man from Axminster was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply and possession of a firearm. He has been bailed until Tuesday, May 28.

Rovers do the double

LYME Regis Rovers crowned a glorious season this week, winning the Perry Street League Division Three with a convincing 5-0 win over Merriott Dynamos. The win came just two weeks after the Rovers lifted the John Fowler Cup in an Easter Monday final. REPORT, PAGE 23
