Three arrested in Monmouth Beach incident
Lyme getting ‘beach ready’ LYME Regis beach is set to be in pristine condition by the end of the week, ready for the main summer season and overnight visitors to arrive from July 4. Beachgoers were limited in their sun-bathing spots this week, as large parts of the sand and shingle were closed off. The town’s main sandy beach and large sections of Cobb Gate shingle beach were cordoned off to allow Dorset Council contractors to carry out re-profiling works. The work coincided with one of the hottest weeks of the year, with beach-goers packing into the small areas that remained open, leaving some concerned over the lack of social distancing. The sand beach is expected to reopen at 5pm today (Friday) and the shingle beach was due to fully open yesterday.

But with a heavy dependency on tourism-related income and a major capital project currently being carried out - the resurfacing of the flat roof above the Amusement Arcade, Antiques & Craft Centre and SWIM on Marine Parade - the council is now having to hold discussions on how it can
strengthen its financial position and prevent itself from becoming insolvent. In April, as lockdown measures first took hold, the council’s reserves stood at £969,794 but by June this had dropped to £581,674.
