Sir Oliver backs PM in Brexit vote WEST Dorset MP Sir Oliver Letwin backed Prime Minister Theresa May in this week’s important Brexit vote. Mrs May’s deal to leave the European Union was rejected by 230 votes on Tuesday evening - the biggest defeat for a sitting government in modern history. Sir Oliver was among those to support the PM. However, last week he joined a group of 20 rebel Tory MPs who went against the party line to vote to restrict the Treasury’s powers to prepare for leaving the EU without a deal. The rebel Tories said they would continue to sabotage all no-deal legislation until Mrs May ruled out the option. Sir Oliver was quoted in The Times saying: “I want to make it abundantly clear that a majority in this house will not allow a no-deal exit to occur at the end of March.”

All change at lifeboat station THE new year has brought about some changes for Lyme Regis lifeboat crew, including the retirement of long-serving member Mark Colley as a sea-going volunteer. Mark (pictured centre alongside John Cable and Jon Broome) has now reached the sea-going age limit of 55 and plans to continue as shore crew and helping to train new recruits. Fellow long-serving crew member Mark Gage has left the team having moved to Bridport and Peter Cable, 24, has left to join the Royal Navy. Photo by Seb Cope

Headteacher to retire amid ‘lack of support’

THE headteacher of The Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis, Dr Richard Steward, has announced he will retire at the end of the academic year. In his letter to parents, Dr Steward said that one of the reasons he had chosen to retire early was due to a “lack of support” they had shown during his time at the school, and he urged them to support the new leadership.
