A UNIVERSITY student from Lyme Regis is planning a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds a mental health charity in memory of her father.

Louise Powell, who grew up in Lyme Regis and attended The Woodroffe School, is hoping to raise £3,500 for the charity Mind, after her father Derek committed suicide earlier this year.

Louise is also hoping to scatter her father’s ashes at the top of Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, as he had always wanted to visit.

She said: “This is a very personal trip to me and is in memory of my dad who suffered from mental illnesses for many years, and last year committed suicide.

“This trip to Mount Kilimanjaro was something my dad and I had planned to do together and is very important to me. As well as raising much-needed funds for this amazing charity, I want to also raise awareness about mental health and inform people that they don't have to hide

their mental illnesses and there is help out there.”

Speaking about her chosen charity, Louise added: “In England, one in six people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week.

“The charity I am fundraising for is Mind. This charity offers support for many people across the UK who are battling mental health problems.

A LYME Regis resident has launched a petition, asking the town council to reconsider its refusal for an improved lifeguard hut to be set up on the beach.

Councillors turned down a proposal for the raised hut, on the grounds that it would take up too much space and was unnecessary.

Social work student to raise mental health awareness with charity trek CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE They provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They also campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

“It's incredibly important for anyone suffering from any type of mental health issue to be provided with the correct information about their illness and be pointed in the right direction into getting the help they are entitled too!

“Sadly this isn't always the case due to lack of government funding for the mental health sector and this is when some amazing charities come into place.”

Louise will head off on her charity trek on September 21st and the challenge is expected to take 12 days, eight of which will be spent hiking and camping along the route, reaching altitudes of 5,895 metres.

“The route we will be taking is called the Lemosho route. Each day will consist of long walks anywhere between five and 15 hours of walking a day and reaching extremely low temperatures, as some trekking will also be done through the night,” she said.

Louise completed a similar trek in Peru when she was 18, taking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

She said: “I raised money for SCOPE, a charity for people with disabilities. The reason I chose this charity at the time was because my

dad was fundraising for it, also through a trek in Morocco. He inspired me to take part in treks.”

Louise is currently in training for Kilimanjaro - the highest mountain in Africa - regularly attending her local gym in Southampton and she hopes use the coastal path for some practise walks when the weather improves.

She will also be taking part in organised training weekends hosted by the company Charity Challenge, which is organising the trek in Tanzania.

Louise added: “All money raised will go directly towards the charity and will be in my dad’s name. I have paid all trip costs myself to ensure all the money I now raise goes towards the charity!

man found Lizzie’s life changed thanks Injured after alleged assault to Lyme’s first Guide Dog

LIZZIE Wiscombe has become the first person in Lyme Regis to qualify to have a Guide Dog.

Lizzie, who has struggled with her eyesight her entire life having been born as a severely premature twin, moved back to her hometown Lyme Regis three years ago following a career in nursing.

She was then told she would only be able to walk within a few metres of her house without assistance because of her deteriorating sight, but now her life has completely changed thanks to Guide Dog Healey.

Lizzie campaigned for three years to get a Guide Dog, having originally been told Lyme Regis was too unsafe.

She went to Southampton to spend a day with a Guide Dog in May 2017 and met a trainer who was familiar with Lyme Regis and agreed to a home visit, which was carried out in August.

It was eventually decided that if a dog could be found that could cope with large crowds in the summer and Lyme’s narrow pavements, they could be trained to help Lizzie on set routes around the town.

Lizzie was first introduced to her dog Healey just before Christmas.

“My first reaction was, ‘he’s big!’

But he has such a sweet nature,” she said.

“The other day we were crossing at the bottom of Hill Road when a car cut me up. He suddenly stopped and I had been told, when he stops I should stop.

“I think I would have been hit if it wasn’t for him so he has already proved his worth.”

Museum welcomes Healey Lizzie has been trained to walk several routes around Lyme Regis with Healey, thanks to help from trainers Kirsteen Welch and Sue Trevelyanm, including a walk into town, to Uplyme to visit her mother and to Lyme Regis Museum where she regularly volunteers.

“Healey volunteers with me now and everyone at the museum has been so good about it,” she commented.

“They said he is part of the museum family now too.”

Lizzie is planning to take Healey on the bus to Seaton so she can go to her regular gym and is also planning to take him on holiday to Jersey by plane.

She said many people are keen to come and say “hello” when they see her and Healey out and about, but she advised it is always best to ask the owner first before distracting a working Guide Dog. Lizzie has virtually no sight in her left eye and pinhole vision in her right. She said she struggled to use a white cane around Lyme Regis because of its uneven and cobbled streets.

“I didn’t think you could get a Guide Dog unless you were completely blind but then I started looking into it more and decided it was the way to go. Now I wouldn’t be without Healey, he has been wonderful.

“It’s so nice to just be able to walk without having to think and worry

francesca@lyme-online.co.uk and panic all the time. It feels so natural. It’s a whole different feeling of being safe and having my independence back.

“I had been so independent before but when my eyesight deteriorated I lost everything - my job, my friends, my independence. It really does impact your life so much.”

Lizzie says she hopes it will now be easier for others in Lyme Regis struggling with their eyesight to get Guide Dogs, and said this will be helped if a proposed pedestrian crossing is built in Broad Street.

“It will help so many people - the elderly, disabled, children. The pluses far outweigh the minuses,” she commented.

“Councillor Richard Doney is looking at Lyme Regis from a disability point of view in terms of access, and I hope this will go even further, including white lines, types of surfaces used and the amount of A-boards in Broad Street which are a real hazard.”

Councillors approve crossing A camapign for a puffin crossing was launched in 2016 when Lizzie was told the town was too unsafe for a Guide Dog, and more than 600 residents signed a petition for it.

Although she now has Healey, town councillors this month approved plans for the crossing to improve safety in general in Broad Street.

They had previously expressed concerns that Dorset County Council’s proposed location for the crossing - between the Pug & Puffin and Joules stores - would result in the loss of seven to eight car parking spaces.

Speaking at a meeting last October, the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, said she thought that local traders would object to the crossing, and the scheme would “kill the town”.

Councillors asked the county if there were any possible alternative locations - suggesting further down Broad Street where the pavement is already widened, or at the top of the road near Tesco Express, where parking is already not allowed.

POLICE are appealing for information on an alleged assault after a man was found with a head injury in Lyme Regis.

The man, aged in his 40s and of no fixed abode, was taken to Lyme Bay Medical Practice on Thursday, February 15, and later to Dorset County Hospital for treatment.

The man had been found by a member of the public in a driveway near the medical practice.

He said he had been drinking in the Royal Standard on Marine Parade the night before and claimed he had been assaulted by two other men.

The injured man was wearing a blue anorak with beige lining, navy blue jumper, blue jeans, boots and a blue backpack.

Detective Sergeant Rhys Griffiths, of Weymouth CID, said: “We are still trying to establish exactly how the man came to sustain the injury and I am appealing for anyone with information to contact police.

“I would be keen to hear from anyone who saw a man matching the description given around the area of the Royal Standard pub on Wednesday evening or in the area of the Lyme Bay Medical Practice yesterday morning.”

Residents expressed concern after Lyme Regis was left without police presence last year, when officers were moved out of the town.

PCSO King is part of the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Bridport but with an outreach base in Lyme Regis.

PC Kirsti Frecknall is also part of Lyme Regis Neighbourhood Policing Team and works in the town on a regular basis, although she also has commitments in other areas.

PCSO King will be at Lyme Regis Library on Saturday, February 24 between 9.30am and 12.30pm to meet Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Marshwood Vale residents.

Stonemason’s fossil find inspired by Attenborough Proposal for Regent rebuild being considered SIR David Attenborough’s recent foray into fossils along the Jurassic Coast inspired one young man to keep his eyes open and alert when walking beneath the cliffs. Archie, aged 21, the UK’s top young architectural stone mason, discovered this major fossil find whilst out walking his dogs. He said he was inspired by Sir David’s recent ‘Sea Dragon’ documentary, filmed on Monmouth Beach, and kept his eye on the mud falls as he walked along the beach.

A PROPOSAL to rebuild the Regent Cinema in Lyme Regis is in the consultation stage.

The Regent Cinema closed in March 2016 after a fire ripped through the building. The auditorium was completely destroyed but the Art Deco frontage fortunately suffered little damage.

Owners Scott Cinemas vowed that it would rebuild the attraction but it has since remained largely untouched.

The company joined forces with Cornwall-based cinema chain WTW in April 2017 and the newly-merged company said it is still “actively engaged in finding the best means of bringing a cinema back to the town.”

Its first proposal for the cinema did not meet the “required design or financial criteria” and a second proposal is now in the consultation stage with county planning officers and English Heritage.

Ambitious plans for seafront restaurant Georgia is fourth woman to join lifeboat Rotary Club raises £900 at annual lunch THE iconic Bay restaurant in Lyme Regis is currently undergoing a full refurbishment and will re-open its doors as SWiM. The Marine Parade restaurant closed on January 1 and its new owners are converting it into a new café/bar, set to open in time for Easter with a focus on craft drinks and an "impeccable menu at affordable prices".

A 23-year-old general manager has become only the fourth woman ever to join Lyme Regis lifeboat crew. Lyme Regisborn Georgia Robson has enrolled as a shore member of the volunteer crew, and is now attending regular training sessions at the lifeboat station on the Cobb.

THE Rotary Club of Lyme Regis raised £900 for the charity Water Survival Box at its annual soup and ploughman's lunch. The event was held at the Alexandra Hotel, with guests including the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, and her consort Alan Ellis.

Open-air cinema in gardens Alison to take on Grizzly Race Plans in for derelict house A POP-UP, open-air cinema event will be held in Lister Gardens, Lyme Regis, this April. Lyme Regis Town Council gave permission for DNT Events to stage the event in the public gardens on Saturday, April 21. If successful, two further events will be planned later in the year. The film to be screened has not yet been announced.

LOCAL resident Alison Davies will be taking on The Grizzly race to raise funds for The Project, a charity that helps young people who are experiencing mental health issues. Alison, whose family run The Kersbrook bed and breakfast in Lyme Regis, will be taking on the infamous 20mile race in Seaton on March 18.

THE district council is considering two separate planning applications to replace the derelict house Beau Sejour in View Road, Lyme Regis.

Both applications would see the existing house demolished, with one proposing to replace it with a block of six flats and the other with four detached dwellings.

Two tourism awards for Lyme LYME Regis had two winners at the recent South West Tourism Awards. Both the Town Mill and Dorset House bed and breakfast took home silver awards from the Riviera International Conference Centre in Torquay. Entries for the awards were seven per cent up on the year before.

Town council makes bid for Tourist Information LYME Regis Town Council has made a proposal to take on responsibility for the Tourist Information Centre, in return for West Dorset District Council writing off its loan debt of £285,000. The proposal was made as part of ongoing negotiations over the transfer of assets and services between the two authorities. The tourist facility could cost the town council £63,759 a year to run.

Red Devils to drop in for Lifeboat Week highlight ORGANISERS of Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week have confirmed that the Red Devils parachute display team will be dropping in again this summer.

A provisional programme for the annual Lifeboat Week events, which this year will run from Saturday, July 28 to Friday, August 3, has already been drawn up and the Red Devils will appear on August 2.

Beer festival cancelled Grocery shop re-opens THE annual Lyme Regis Beer Festival has been cancelled due to "escalating costs". The festival was due to take place at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis over the Easter weekend but organisers said escalating costs had made it impossible to justify continuing the event.

RESIDENTS have welcomed the re-opening of a convenience store on Staples Terrace. The shop - formerly known as Staples Stores and now Lyme Convenience Stores - closed down last year. New owners Taz and Ireen Sri (above) recently moved to the area from London.

Rock legend named new theatre patron THE Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis has announced that Ian Gillan, frontman of rock band Deep Purple, has joined the venue as a patron.

The Deep Purple lead singer and lyricist lives between Portugal and Lyme Regis. He found fame in the 1970s with hard rock hits such as 'Smoke On The Water', 'Highway Star', and 'Child in Time'.

He explained that he has an interest in supporting all arts, especially regionally, commenting: “It’s vital that we all support the Marine. It’s easy to undervalue arts venues, but they are so important to culture and the community.

“People can make a contribution in many ways - even simply by turning up.

I come when I can.”

LYME MATTERS with Philip Evans Essential reading for all those with Lyme at heart

A message from the Beans - we miss you already I HAD a call this week from former Lyme Regis resident and councillor Peter Bean.

Peter and his partner Dodie made many friends in Lyme where they lived for 22 years after retirement. In the end advancing years and the hills of Lyme did for them and they reluctantly decided to move to Farnham in Surrey to be nearer their family.

After making the decision, matters moved very quickly and the popular couple who lived in Charmouth Road never had time to say a proper goodbye to their many friends so Peter asked me to pass on their best wishes.

Peter came to Lyme with extensive local government experience in the Kent town of Dover where he served a term as mayor. That experience was put to good use when he won a seat on the town council and quickly rose to chairing the most influential committee at the Guildhall – Strategy and Policy, now Strategy and Finance.

If I recall, Peter was a strong debater and was not afraid of ruffling a few feathers from time to time. He had one very tetchy argument with PC Richard Winward over skateboarding on the seafront and the police’s reluctance to clamp down on it with no other facilities for the kids to practise their skills.

After he stood down from the council Peter would often pop into my office to enquire what was happening in the council chamber, usually prefacing his enquiry with the words “what have they done now”?

Peter and Dodie loved Lyme and will look back on their years here with great affection.

PART from having the occasional pop at the council, over the years this column has been filled with memories.

Memories of growing up in Lyme in the 1950s-60s, memories of big and tragic events in the town and memories of its people past and present. Many of them unforgettable characters.

Memories, too, of the best of times in the newspaper industry.

Sadly, those days are no more but new challenges present themselves in this digital age - hence the birth on LymeOnline.

The launch of our website, constructed in just two weeks, has been an unqualified success with thousands of readers having accessed our news pages.

And so the website’s bed-fellow, the print version of LymeOnline, makes its debut today.

Over the next few days the paper will be delivered to easily accessible letterboxes as well as being available in a number of pick-up points around the town and in Uplyme and Charmouth.

Intially, we expect to put out between 3,000-4,000 copies.

We believe the print version is essential because of the high percentage of elderly people in the town who are not interested in receiving their news on a computer or mobile device. With a website and newspaper we reach all sections of the community.

With so many small towns having lost their traditional newspaper in recent times, this combination of hyper-local publishing is happening

The government has also announced a review of Britain’s press in the light of impact of digital media. Prime Minister Theresa May has said the disappearance of so many local titles was “dangerous for our democracy”, describing local papers as a “huge force for good”.

So why the element of door-todoor distribution? We have learned in the last few years that in small towns like Lyme there is limited market for advertising and so it is important that those advertisers who are supporting us get the widest possible exposure in the town.

This is a new low-cost model which gives advertisers the maximum coverage at affordable prices.

Door-to-door distribution is not an easy process, especially in a town like Lyme with so many hills and

houses with long drives.

We are in the process of building a team of deliverers and it will take a few weeks until we are able to get to the maximum number of homes. In Lyme alone there are about 1,800 letterboxes but some of these are not easily accessible. These include holiday homes which have to be eliminated from our rounds.

The enormity of trying to get to the maximum number of houses in Lyme came home to roost on Sun-

day when my daughter Francesca and I drove up virtualy every road in town counting the number of letterboxes and dividing them into rounds of 100.

I have to admit there were roads I had never been down and some housing developments I had never seen. My conclusion: there are some very fine homes in Lyme.

The industry norm for door-todoor distribution is between 8p and 12p per copy. We are offering 10p, described by someone on Facebook as “slave labour”. They have a point and we will be paying a bit more for the difficult rounds.

The task of editing both the website and the print version has been handed over to Francesca, who, with her sister Zoe’s help, built the website in just a week.

I shall be taking a back seat but contributing to both the website and paper with this column, the occasional feature and covering the sport.

Those two other old hacks with whom I have worked alongside for so many years - freelance journalist Geoff Baker and award-winning photographer Richard Austin - will also be contributing regularly.

The people of Lyme have demonstrated in recent weeks that they want a community newspaper - we will do our best to satisfy that demand with LymeOnline - on the web and in print.

A NEW and much needed facility for the elderly of Lyme Regis was launched this week.

LymeForward has set up a memory café which will meet on a monthly basis at the football club. Similar organisations in Axminster, Seaton and Colyton are thriving and I’m sure the Lyme café will be very popular as well.

It gives the old folk of Lyme the chance to meet and remember on a regular basis, chat over old times and enjoy regular company.

At the football club we have our own memory wall (pictured) always of great interest to former players.

The night the grandfather clock was smashed in the Royal Lion PART of my duties when I first worked in a newspaper office on work experience at the Bridport News (circa 1963) was to type in the skittles results. No emails in those days, of course, so all the scores and league tables had to be typed in by hand.

As I lived in Lyme, legendary sports editor Roger Bailey always allowed me to type in the Lyme Regis Skittles League results.

Skittles was the main winter pastime for the sporting men of Lyme Regis. A couple of years after my work experience at the ‘Wip-Wop’, as the Bridport News was affectionately referred to, I had started work full-time as a reporter for the Express & Echo in Exeter.

By this time I was 17 years old and playing skittles regularly in Lyme after travelling home from Exeter on the train before the Bluebell Line was closed by the Beeching axe in 1966.

My mates and I, all around the same age, formed a team called ‘The Psychedelic Ravers’ (very appropriate for the 1960s) and we chose the Angel Inn to be our home alley. There was a good reason for this; landlord Ted Oaks turned a

I well remember my first pint at The Angel – a pint of Black and Tan for 1s. 1d – which soon ended up in the River Lym! In those days there were also alleys at the London Inn (Church Street), New Inn (Broad Street), Talbot Arms (Uplyme), Coach & Horses (Charmouth), The George (Charmouth), Wootton Social Club and Rousdon Club.

Today there are only two alleys in Lyme – the Ship Inn and the Rock Point, which came later, as did the Pilot Boat which is now closed for a major refit. With exception of the Coach & Horses (also closed), the out-of-town alleys are still in use.

‘The Psychedelic Ravers’ were greeted with some dismay by those who had been skittling for years. To be honest we were a bit too loud for their liking and far too cocky when we won, a rare occasion. After a

home game we would return to the public bar at the Angel where there was often a lock-in and a sing-song late into the night.

One of the biggest sporting social occasions in Lyme in those days was the Skittle League annual dinner, usually held in the ballroom at the Royal Lion where all the cups were presented. It was a men-only gathering – ladies skittles in Lyme came many years later.

The first dinner attended by ‘The Psychedelic Ravers’ was a real eyeopener, memorable because two well-known brothers went to fight before dinner was served, knocking over the grandfather clock, its internal workings spilling out onto the floor. Landlord Bob Dunne was not best pleased.

It was tradition at the dinner for all the cup winners to fill their cups with cocktails of strong liquor and then pass them to all those in attendance for a gulp. This resulted in a number of our team being carried home!

For games out of town we would hire Lou Wakeley’s taxi and ten bob in our pockets was enough to get us home, having paid our match fees and enjoyed a pasty and a few pints of Palmers Best.

All these memories came flooding back as I was typing out the Lyme Regis skittles results for the sport section on the LymeOnline website.

The league may not be so well patrionised as it was in those days but it is still very buoyant with two men’s divisions and one lades’ despite fewer alleys. And some of the old team names are still competing – Trappers and Miscellaneous among them, the two teams I remember for whom the best skittlers in town were members.

‘The Psychedelic Ravers’ have long disappeared, although I hear the money collection box, made by carpenter Dick Hodder when he was an apprentice, is still in use. I’ve played occasionally over the years and one season back in the 1980s became doubles champions with Arthur Larcombe from Uplyme.

We all look back on our growing up years through rose-tinted glasses and as I do so I raise a glass to ‘The Psychedelic Ravers’ – Dave Reed, Dick Hodder, Michael Blackmore, Doug Rattenbury, Les Smith, Barry Rattenbury, Terry Holman, Alan Beviss and Howard Williams, sadly not all of whom are still with us.

Can Lyme Regis go plastic free?

PLANS TO JOIN NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO RID COAST OF PLASTIC POLLUTION

AKING Lyme Regis a plastic free town could boost pride in the community and have a positive effect on tourism.

That is the view of eco-group Turn Lyme Green, which is encouraging Lyme Regis to join the national campaign to rid coastal towns of plastic pollution.

The Plastic Free Coastlines campaign has received major publicity in the national press in recent weeks. It was set up by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), a national marine conservation and campaigning charity based in Cornwall, which empowers communities to take action to protect oceans, beaches and wildlife.

Two towns in the UK, Penzance and Tyneside in the north east of England, have already become ‘plastic free’ towns after following a template created by SAS, and a further 180 coastal towns are currently working to fulfil the objectives of the scheme inspired by the recent surge in awareness of plastic pollution.

Turn Lyme Green representatives attended a recent town council meeting to ask for support in making Lyme Regis plastic free.

The organisation’s chairman, Jo Oliver Smith, said the first stage of this was receiving the council’s endorsement of the project and a steering group would then be formed.

“We realise it will take a lot of work, but we’ve already seen a surge in local interest in this, which we hope will encourage the town council to support us,” she added.

“Efforts to tackle plastic pollution will be worthwhile, with a positive effect on tourism and

Councillor Richard Doney (pictured inset) previously mooted the idea of Lyme Regis becoming a plastic free town at a recent Tourism, Community & Publicity Committee meeting, suggesting the council should use the so-called ‘David Attenborough effect’ to its advantage by reducing plastic waste and appealing to eco-friendly tourists.

There has been a surge in public interest in reducing plastic waste following Sir David Attenborough’s popular ‘Blue Planet II’ television series on the BBC. Speaking at this month’s meeting, Councillor Doney said: “I see this as an opportunity for the town to build even more on its reputation.”

He added that there was “great public momentum” behind the campaign to create plastic free towns and he was planning to bring a report to the next Tourism, Community & Publicity meeting on how the council could contribute.

Chairman of the tourism committee, Councillor Cheryl Reynolds, said: “My support for this is wholehearted. I’m happy to work with Turn Lyme Green and I think Richard is the perfect person so carry it through. He will get all my support and the support of my committee.”

Councillor Steve Miller said the plastic free campaign was an “important initiative” and Councillor Brian Larcombe said he hoped it would also take landfill into account, not just the oceans.

Harry’s in town!

HE looks every inch a prince. It can’t be, can it?

A familiar sight around the local pubs, could he be scouting for a suitable venue for his stag night before marrying Meghan Markle?

Ever since Prince Harry announced his engagement to the American actress, lookalike Harry Poulson (yes, he’s really called Harry!) has been in big demand.

The carpenter, who works at Sunseeker in Poole and at the Volunteer Inn in Lyme Regis, is constantly stopped in the street for selfies with girls and has recently been snapped up by a public relations company for personal appearances, after featuring in a Cornish newspaper.

With the royal wedding planned for May 19, Harry is looking forward to making public appearances all over the South West in the runup to the big day.

With his natty blue suit and shy smile, he’s certainly a dead ringer for the fifth in line to the throne.

Harry told LymeOnline: “I first realised there was a similarity with Prince Harry a couple of years ago when people kept telling me.

“All the guys at work say I look like him all the time and I get told I look like Prince Harry during every bar shift at the Volunteer.”

County approves flood scheme DEVON County Council has approved the flood improvement schemes for Uplyme and Ivybridge, which are expected to need more than £500,000 of investment and will provide improved protection, parish councillors were informed at their January meeting.

Members of Uplyme Parish Council were told that a review of the drainage systems in the village had highlighted restrictions and inadequate capacities which create a risk of flooding.

More than 14 properties were reported to have been flooded internally during 2012, some on multiple occasions.

Work is due to commence early March 2018.

Emergency services pay visit to Uplyme Pre-School

Uplyme Morris to host day of dancing UPLYME Morris is inviting morris sides from across the country to take part in a day of dancing in Lyme Regis.

The Uplyme-based group will be hosting the first Lyme Regis Day of Morris Dancing on Saturday, June 9.

The event will start at 11am and performances will be held on the seafront throughout the day, including morris dancing sides from across the country, local schools and a morris band.

The celebration will be topped off with a beach barbecue in the evening.

More volunteers needed at Charmouth Central library

CHARMOUTH Central is looking for more volunteers to help run the community library and venue.

The library was scheduled for closure by Dorset County Council several years ago, but was re-opened as a community library, run by volunteers, in 2013.

Chairman of Charmouth Central, Russell Telfer, commented: “Now, after a steady five years, we've had some changes in the management committee of the library. Deb Winstone and Jane Clifford have stepped down after a lengthy and very effective term of duty.

“To provide more support, Roger Sansom and I have joined the team - although we’re also hoping for one or two more new volunteers to help. The ladies who have retired are a hard act to follow!

“There is a wonderful spirit of camaraderie in the team; we’re here because we believe in what we’re doing. Books are an essential backdrop to civilised life.

“Unfortunately if we just ran the library on its own we wouldn’t acquire the funds to maintain the building, pay its essential overheads and offer additional services.

Community venue

CHILDREN from Uplyme Pre-School recently welcomed visitors from the local emergency services.

The youngsters had been learning about transport, finishing with emergency vehicles before breaking up for half term.

This included discussing the work of the ambulances, and the children had great fun bandaging the staff and their friends.

Elliott Herbert from Lyme Regis lifeboat crew gave a talk about the work of the RNLI and how to keep safe whilst at the seaside.

Local Police Community Support Officer Chris

came along to talk about the work of the police, and how they keep the public safe. The children had the opportunity to try on the uniforms as well as look around the police van.

Finally, members of Lyme Regis fire brigade came to see the children. Station chief Virgil Turner spoke about the dangers of fire, and gave the youngsters guided tour of the fire engine.

Jan Fowler from Uplyme Pre-School said: “We are very grateful to all the emergency services who came along to speak to the children about the important work they do.”

“Charmouth Central is easy to get to and to stop at. Remember, we’re not just a library, we are a social centre and meeting place. You could hire us for an afternoon or evening at competitive rates.”

Upcoming events at Charmouth Central include ‘In Conversation’ evenings, starting in March; a cocktails and canapés event; and book sales.

Mr Telfer added: “If you’re in or around Charmouth, do drop in and come and see us.

“For several weeks at a time we have displays of local artists. Some of the items are for sale. It helps the artists who can display their work, and it helps the library who will collect a modest commission which all contributes to helping us continue as a library and community centre.”

Entertaining, mischievous and thought-provoking

By George, it’s about time we hailed Mary IT was Richard Austin who started it.

Now there’s a phrase not entirely unfamiliar to many of us.

But it was, he did. Aussie took to ‘Soapbox II’, the riotous local hell-raising group nihilistically-run on Facebook by Matt Puddy, to say what a disgrace it was that Mary Anning’s grave in the churchyard was in such a shamefully-tatty state.

Or as he put it: “Having watched David Attenborough helping Chris Moore get his headless fossil of an ichthyosaurus from within the cliff face near Lyme, I heard Attenborough refer to our very own unsung heroine Mary Anning for bringing the world's attention to the Jurassic cliffs and its bony treasures within.

“So it does beg the question as to why her gravestone alongside the church is as far as I know the only outside shrine or reference to the great lady (not counting the museum or the road)? In fact, she only gets four lines on the gravestone.

“Why do we as a community erect a bronze statue of a

[My note: I think Richard is incorrect about this; although Somers was a pirate who plundered and razed the New World, he died before slavery

began in Bermuda. But that’s largely irrelevant to his point, below, and anyway if you want to try tell Aussie he’s wrong, then good luck with that.]

Richard ended: “For me Mary Anning is far more important to our history, so let’s buy her a new headstone or erect a large bronze statue much bigger than the iffy voyager in Langmoor.”

Now I have no desire to start any truck with any iffy voyager, especially one who carried a sword in his Pampers, but Aussie has a good point – and it is one which is clearly popular within the town as 85 members of Mr Puddy’s gang of local antagonists endorsed it on ‘Soapbox II’.

Whilst I realise that seven dozen ‘likes’ on Facebook does not exactly make you the Prophet Moses, I’ve mentioned Richard’s call to many in the town and everybody agreed that they too would like a large erection.

Not one poo-poohed it with anything like the alarming enthusiasm which seemingly filled the pants of the statue of Sir George.

Although the recent over-crowding of the town at half term almost made me wish that we’d put up a statue of Hitler, to try deter visitors, aside from the sentimental argument it makes good commercial sense to have a monument to Mary Anning. For although Richard argues that she is “far more important to our history”, perhaps of greater significance is that she is far more important to our future.

The avid reaction to Attenborough’s recent BBC film on Lyme fossils, the mania to see Dippy at Dorchester, the fever to see the new old bones on display at Charmouth and the impending movie about Mary Anning starring Jenny Agutter all add up to argue that

whereas we residents may believe that visitors mostly come here for the Cobb, the beach or the Palmers [joke], the truth is that the biggest lure is the joy of fossil-hunting.

As Lyme is the home of arguably the greatest palaeontologist the world has ever known, as there are stacks of fossils both west and east of us and as Mary actually lived and died here – as opposed to Somers, Coram and Lister, who were only born here and achieved their greatness someplace else – why are we not more heavily marketing this and trading off of it for the benefit of the town’s tourism?

Instead of the council wasting time and tedious talk investigating a daft idea to build a rubbish-looking café and some extra bogs in the Lister Gardens – an expensive vanity project that would attract absolutely no extra visitors to the town – why does it not vote to give our excellent and forwardthinking tourism supremo, Councillor Cheryl Reynolds, the larger funds she needs to build a statue to Mary and to otherwise properly promote Lyme’s fossil fame?

Next year is the 220th anniversary of the birth of Mary Anning, this year ought to be the one during which the council agrees to honour her appropriately with a tall statue and in doing so help to boost the town’s fossil fame to tourists.

The only debate, of course, is where to put it.

I favour moving the Millennium Clock from Cobb Gate and putting up a 60ft statue to Mary in its place. I’d like to hear from readers on why not.

Dog fighters are roaming about, pinching your pet from your front garden

Dog-stealing gangs deserve ruff justice I’M writing this more as a community awareness announcement than as my usual thing of moaning about Lyme matters that I know nothing about.

Have you heard about the growing menace of people nicking dogs?

My friend Ruth Wason, former head girl Ruthie of the much-missed Harbour Café fame, alerted me to this.

It’s not nice. In essence it is suspected that gangs of dog fighters are roaming about, pinching your pet from your front garden or if it’s left alone for a sec outside a shop, so that the kidnapped animals can be used as BAIT in training dogs to fight and kill. It’s said that the dog fighters prefer to steal spaniels, because they scream better when thrown into the pit.

I know, it is difficult to believe that such scum exist, but apparently they do. And they do in alarmingly-increasing numbers because of our ludicrous laws, under which dog fighters face six months at the absolute tops, but most likely just a magistrate’s ban on keeping animals. Fair enough, then I’ll get me mate to keep ‘em. Which morons write these laws?

Anyway, besides wondering what our MP is going to do about our current pathetic punishments, the point is that this hideous cruelty is becoming a nationwide problem and I’m just passing on Ruthie’s tip to best not to let your pet out of your sight.

I’m also passing on what I anticipate may be the opinion of many, that should any local magistrates [without naming names, Julie Sheppard] have one of this trash appear before them on a dog-fighting charge, that they send them down irrespective of any pleas of mitigation that they were born without a heart, brain and soul.

Now it’s time for Guitars On The Boards LYME’S giant Guitars On The Beach is to stage its smallest show ever.

The guitar festival which traditionally draws crowds of thousands to the day of music on the sand is to put on a one-off fund-raiser at The Marine Theatre for just 350 people.

The rock and dance night, billed as ‘Guitars On The Boards’, will be held on Saturday April 14 and will star Lyme’s hottest new young band, Dream Phaser, plus the Guitars On The Beach house band and “special surprise guests”.

The announcement of the all-hits show at the theatre comes as GOTB organisers say they are “over the moon and heading for Mars” with delight at how Lyme businesses are rallying around like never before to support and sponsor this year’s main event on thebeach on June 16.

Organisers have to raise about £7,000 to stage the massive guitar gig, which draws guitarists and audiences from all over the UK, and they are “chuffed to bits” that the town has already pledged £3,800 in sponsorship.

Local rock legend Ian Gillan - the Deep Purple front man who led the huge sand band to achieving the UK record as ‘Britain’s biggest band’ when 3,000 guitarists played along to ‘Smoke On The Water’ at GOTB in 2014 - kicked off the sponsorship with

GUITARS On The Beach organisers are thrilled by support for this year’s event £1,000.

Now his donation has been matched each by major sponsors Lyme Bay Holidays and SWiM, the new beachfront restaurant which Richard and Nikki Cooper, the couple behind the successful Stable chain of restaurants, are soon to open at the old By The Bay premises.

Generous sponsorship has also come from West Bay’s Snack Shack, Dennis Spacey’s Tukxi company and

Lyme’s Westwood guest house, and Uplyme author and entrepreneur Chris Barez-Brown has made an opening bid of £500 in the auction to win the chance to play with the house band at the event’s climax record bid mass play-along.

The surge of local support for the guitar event, which has become one of West Dorset’s biggest summer attractions, has thrilled GOTB’s team of Lyme-based organisers.

“The local support from businesses, the theatre and individuals for Guitars On The Beach this year is already tremendous and we are cock-a-hoop at the amazingly-kind generosity, what a town! It is no exaggeration to say that we are so chuffed to bits that our spirits are over the Moon and heading for Mars alongside Elon Musk’s space car,” said GOTB spokesman Geoff Baker.

“We are also overwhelmed by the huge number of great local musicians and bands from across the UK who are asking if they can perform on the beach on the day. The enthusiasm for Guitars On The Beach is soaring like never before and we’re aiming to make this year’s gig the best one yet.”

He added: “We are thrilled that Dream Phaser have agreed to play at the Guitars On The Boards show at the Marine in April. They are one of

the hottest young bands in the town, all local musicians, and they should draw a big crowd.”

Pete Wild, GOTB’s head of new talent development, said: “Dream Phaser sounds like a newly invented psychedelic guitar effects pedal, but it is in fact a seven-piece band of teenagers whose love of groove and rock has brought them together to craft a set of banging covers from across four decades.

“In their previous incarnation as Joe and The Juice they wowed the audience at GOTB 2017 when they played straight after the House Band and Mungo Jerry. Three original band members have now gone to the cities to pursue new lives so the remaining young musicians have regrouped with new additions and a new name.

“Their performance at GOTB last year was a real coming of age for the band. These guys are all local musicians who put in days after days of hard work into their passion for playing music and when they performed so well to a huge audience on the beach last year their confidence grew and now they are now truly on fire!

NEW venue and a classic pantomime story never performed in Lyme Regis. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, very little when I attended the very first showing of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ by Lyme Regis Pantomime Society in their very first full production at the Woodmead Halls.

I suppose I have reviewed 20-30 pantomimes in Lyme Regis over the years and this one was up their among the best - perhaps THE best.

Producer/director Sarah Causley and her band of happy players and backstage helpers can feel well proud of their efforts in staging one of the most popular pantomimes in unfamiliar surroundings.

It had all the classic ingredients of a traditional pantomime - effective scenery, colourful costumes, outrageous wigs, slapstick, corny jokes, memorable tunes and plenty of energetic dance routines and cute ballet interludes.

It seemed to me that the more expansive stage facilities at the Woodmead Halls encouraged greater freedom for the dancers to make the most of some excellent choreography.

Add to this a very strong cast of principals, some excellent and varied musical numbers and a responsive audience who hissed and booed in all the right places, you have all the key require-

and is destined to be one of Lyme’s most popular stage performers as her experience grows.

One person who will undoubtedly be proud of Melissa’s progress is grandmother Cathryn Brooks, herself an experienced stage performer in Lyme in many guises over the years. Cathryn used that experience to good effect in portraying Lyme Regis Pantomime Society the role of the evil fairy Carabosse, extracting a cacophony of boos and hisses from the audience.

My Life in Food: A rustic dining experience

EASTING at River Cottage, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s farmcum-restaurant-cum-culinary school-cum venue, on the outskirts of Axminster, is a real celebration of great food set against the glorious backdrop of Park Farm. As a dining experience, it

Along with 60 other guests, Jackie and I climbed onto the tractor-drawn trailor for a bumpy ride down into the heart of Hugh’s hugely successful emporium of all things country.

We had all heeded instructions to wrap up warm and were ushered into a yurt (a first for me) for a warming welcoming glass of Kingston Black apple cider. Sat on straw bales with the wood burner letting out a faint aroma of scorched embers, we are given a run down on how the evening is likely to pan out as we SEASONAL dishes using inare served with two gredients grown on the farm tasty canapés – a are served at River Cottage chicken croquette with

aioli and taramasalata on rye bread. We are told two more canapés are to come before we sit down to a four-course menu.

One thing is immediately evident. There’s no sitting on ceremony at River Cottage. There are no closed doors in this very laid back atmosphere, just wander freely as you wish, stroll into the kitchen where a team of chefs are busy preparing tonight’s supper, take a look at the Park Farm kitchen where Hugh creates his culinary delights.

The courtyard is lit by open fires but on long summer nights the guests are encouraged to wander around the farm and see where the ingredients already steaming on the stoves are harvested.

Seating for the main event is on two long tables in a converted barn where one imagined many new friends and acquaintances have been made.

We were sat next to a couple who had travelled from Kent especially for the occasion, big fans of Hugh’s television series who were leaving at 5am the following day to return home.

With plenty of seeded sourdough with sauer kraut for all, two more canapés were served – beef carpaccio with watercress and curried parsnip soup with shallots and mint – before head chef Andy Tyrell explained what delights

In the Food for Thought tent, Hugh has curated a line-up of speakers, including writer and environmental activist George Monbiot, which promises to provide thought-provoking and possibly controversial, debate and discussion.

The fair will be packed full of activities, from chef demos on the main stage and culinary masterclasses - including wild cocktails, spicy suppers and cooking over fire with Gill Meller - to artisan food stalls, craft workshops, talks and live music, plus garden and wild food tours with River Cottage foraging guru John Wright.

There will also be a new barbecue area where chefs will be sharing their techniques for cooking meat, fish and vegetables over fire.

A team of River Cottage experts and friends will be on hand across the site to share culinary tips and gardening wisdom, throughout the weekend.

Children under the age of 16 go free and will be kept entertained with a huge choice of activities including pasta and pancake-making masterclasses, giant bubbles, games, craft workshops, a meet the animals area, face painting, skittles and hula hooping.

Whilst at the Food Fair there will also be the chance to dine inside the iconic River Cottage farmhouse and enjoy a two-course menu for £20, featuring the very best seasonal and local ingredients.

For those looking for food-on-the-go, there will be a range of street food stands as well as a fully licensed bar serving local ciders, beers, wines and seasonal cocktails under canvas.

Those keen to learn something new can book onto one of the popular masterclasses. Starting at £20, these include Bread & Butter from scratch in an hour, River Cottage Ravioli, Wild Cocktails and Outdoor Cookery.

Guests stroll in and out of the dining hall, having explored the Park Farm complex, as the chefs busy themselves on the first dish and the River Cottage staff pitch in to ensure everyone’s enjoying the experience. First up of the four courses is coppa – air dried neck of pork - with celeriac remoulade and a delicate walnut dressing, which we all agreed was the perfect starter.

All the waiting staff had been briefed on the ingredients of each dish so we knew exactly what to expect and there were vegetarian options for the non-meat eaters.

By this time chatter around the tables had increased as we got to know our neighbours and the wine intake had started to loosen up the British stiff lip, with much talk of whether the second course would live up to the first.

And indeed it did – mackerel (my favourite fish) fillet, sourced from Cornwall that day, in an oatmeal crust, most often served for a bit of tartness with gooseberries, we were told by Andy, but on this occasion with poached rhubarb. It really sent the taste buds into orbit.

This month at the Marine Catch up with Lyme’s Little Theatre by the Sea

I’M convinced there is some kind of time machine at the Marine Theatre because it seems no sooner have I arrived at about 8am, than I am saying ‘good afternoon’ to everyone as midday suddenly rolls around.

Every week is a busy week but there are times when things move up a gear, especially when the deadline for the spring/summer brochure is approaching!

But then it’s not just about programming and brochures, with our historical and beautiful 124-year-old theatre comes an important inheritance that we not only love and value for its glorious past, but we need to think about the future. As with all elderly buildings, it needs the occasional improvement and this year we have taken the very important step of not only upgrading our toilet facilities but also installing a disabled cubicle.

This will come as a blessed relief to our loyal customers who have faced the trip down to the council offices in all weathers, accompanied by one of our devoted volunteers, when nature called. It has been a long time coming but then look how long it took to get the roof repaired.

These things cost huge sums and need a lot of planning.

So as we move onto the next exciting chapter of the Marine story, with Gabby Rabbitts taking the reins, we were delighted and privileged to announce Ian Gillan’s agreement to be a patron of the theatre. Lead singer and lyricist for Deep Purple, Ian was bowled over by our little theatre by the sea when he visited earlier in the month.

Our first Royal Shakespeare Company Live event on February 14 was an enormous success; as our audience filed into the auditorium simultaneously with the Stratford audience, the quality of our new sound system combined with our cinema-sized screen made us feel like

THE Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis is holding a series of events to mark the centenary of female suffrage and International Women’s Day. Opening the series is a funny and touching play about female friendship called ‘The Boadicea of Britannia Street’, written by the acclaimed playwright Ade Morris.

Local journalist Fran, PE teacher Penny, shy librarian Janet, and feisty Annie form a writing group. Inspired by the historical figure Boadicea, these women face their demons, overcome their enemies, and move on to a better future.

‘Ain’t I A Woman’ is a choir of professional female singers, which will perform at the Marine alongside two community choirs in a unique concert.

They will sing new songs especially for the project about the physicality, spirituality and social context of being a woman, as well as celebrating the stories of inspirational women. The choirs will explore what it means to be a woman, and sing about fertility, motherhood, work, and equal pay.

This event is presented by Wren Music, a Devonbased charity with a mission to work with music and culture in order to celebrate identity and diversity.

The final event is a talk by Diane Atkinson based on her book, ‘Rise Up Women! The Remarkable Lives of the Suffragettes’ that charts women’s fight for the vote through the lives of those who took part, in a timely celebration of an extraordinary struggle.

Diane explores the historic events led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Christabel and Sylvia, the suffragettes and their actions would come to define protest movements for generations to come. From their marches on parliament and 10 Downing Street, to the selling of their paper, Votes for Women, through to the more militant activities

This hilarious TV comedy will be larger than life thanks to the Marine Players, directed by Fred Humphreys, who has played many roles in a large number of performances including the memorable community play Monmouth.

The only problem you’ll have is choosing what to see and if you’re anything like me and forget to put things in your diary, the best way to keep up to date with what’s going on at the Marine is to join our mailing list. Georgie Fame to open Lyme’s Jazz Jurassica THE legendary jazz and blues artist Georgie Fame will open this year’s Jazz Jurassica festival on Thursday, May 24 with a concert at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis, on what is rumoured to be his last-ever UK tour.

This year’s busy festival line-up also features the iconic James Taylor Quartet, award-winning jazz singer Liane Carroll and saxophonist Fliss Gorst’s swing band.

As well as ticketed events, there will be hours of free music on the seafront and around the town, many showcasing local talent, including young musicians from music charity B Sharp at its annual Busking Festival.

Julie Sheppard, festival organiser, said: “It’s a real coup for Georgie Fame to open the festival, which we’re delighted to do in conjunction with

the Marine Theatre.

“This is a ‘not to be missed’ opportunity to see a jazz legend perform up close in one the country’s most intimate venues.”

Time to Rock for Heroes!

PROFESSIONAL music show Rock For Heroes will be raising funds for charity in Lyme Regis as it celebrates a triple centenary year.

The show, to be held at the Marine Theatre on Saturday, March 17, will mark the 100th anniversaries of the end of the First World War, women’s suffrage and the 100th birthday of the RAF. Funds raised on the night will be doubled by production company Total Productions, and donated to Help For Heroes.

Lyme to be represented at WWI commemorations LYME Regis will be represented at Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, this summer as Royal British Legion members from across the county commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. A decade after the end of WW1, veterans and war widows visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres on August 8 1928.

Exactly 90 years later, thousands of Royal British Legion members will recreate the 1928 Great Pilgrimage to visit the same battlefields and on August 8th will carry their standards along the same route to the Menin Gate, to commemorate the last 100 days of WW1 and represent an entire generation that served while defending their country.

The Lyme Regis branch of the Royal British Legion, together with many Dorset branches, agreed to send their standards and wreaths to the historic event. However, having secured funding from Lyme Regis Town Council, the local branch is now able to go one step further and is sending its standard bearer to attend the event, with the branch itself funding the trip for the wreath bearer.

The branch is now holding a competition, asking local schoolchildren to write the inscription which will be carried on the wreath.

Schools in Lyme Regis, Uplyme & Charmouth have been asked to take part in the competition, which will see children write a shirt inscription on the theme ‘What are my thoughts as the 100th anniversary of the cessations of WWI approaches?’

A small prize will be presented to the winner from each school, with the overall winner then being selected to having their inscription written on the wreath.

The Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, and president of the Lyme Regis branch of the Royal British Legion, Philip Evans, will judge the competition.

Petition launched after council turns down raised lifeguard hut A PETITION has been launched after the town council refused permission for an improved lifeguard hut on Lyme Regis beach.

Local resident Ryan Turner launched the petition after hearing that the council turned down a proposal from the RNLI to set up a raised lifeguard hut on the town’s sandy beach during the summer holidays.

This would replace the smaller hut currently used by lifeguards, which sits at ground level.

The charity said the proposed hut would improve safety on the beach, as lifeguards would be able to better see the beach during busy periods and it would provide a better view of people in the water.

However, town councillors described the design as “ugly and unnecessary”.

Councillor John Broom commented: “Personally I think it’s horrendous. I don’t mind them having a hut on the beach, but this structure is unnecessary.”

Councillor Brian Larcombe said there were many coastal resorts that did not even have a lifeguard facility, or have a lifeboat station within a few metres of the beach, so he felt Lyme Regis was already well covered.

He also said he did not think the proposed hut looked temporary and was concerned it would stay in place all year.

Councillor Cheryl Reynolds added that Lyme Regis did not have a very big sandy beach and if they took up too much space there would be no one for the lifeguards to look after.

Councillor Richard Doney said the RNLI had a “vested interest” in saying it would improve safety but he did not see any justification for the larger hut.

“To me it’s an ugly, unnecessary endorsement,” he added.

Councillor Jeff Scowen first expressed concern at going against safety advice of the RNLI, but later said he had been swayed by fellow councillors’ arguments.

It was agreed to refuse the request.

Many residents have since taken to social media to voice their concerns over the council’s decision.

Residents encouraged to County increases council take interest in healthcare tax to fund social care DO you use local healthcare services? May you one day need them? Do you know someone using them? Do you work in one of them?

LymeForward is encouraging residents in the Lyme Regis area to take a close interest in healthcare services, as Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will be deciding over the next few months how these services will be provided in the local area after January 31st next year.

That’s the expiry date of the contract covering all medical services at Lyme Regis Medical Centre, and community health services for everyone registered at any of the three GP surgeries in Lyme and Charmouth.

The contract is currently held by Virgin Care and the CCG is expected to offer a new contract, for which any recognised health provider may bid.

Chris Boothroyd of LymeForward commented: “We might imagine that health and care needs are the only factor, but in reality powerful financial and commercial forces are at work too.

“The NHS Constitution gives us all ‘the right to be involved in the planning of healthcare services, the development of proposals for change, and in decisions affecting the operation of those services.’ Fine words: but in practice those rights won’t be granted unless we demand them. So knowing what’s going on, and being eternally vigilant, is essential.

“For the last nine months the active team of volunteers in LymeForward’s Health and Wellbeing Group has been preparing three submissions to the CCG: a detailed collection of facts about how services are provided now; an 18point analysis of gaps and weaknesses; and a 15point set of ideas about ways of improving services when the contract is re-tendered.”

Mr Boothroyd continued: “Among those 15 recommendations are the need to retain and develop as many services as possible within the Lyme area; to keep provision and contracting simple, coherent and integrated; to deal with the often-irrational barriers to seamless care across the Dorset/Devon border; to face up to the transport conditions that so often make it difficult to access essential services; to recognise some serious under-resourcing; and to prioritise improvements in provision for mental health conditions, young families, the frail elderly, and hospital discharge.

“Lots of registered patients have contributed ideas, as have many of the excellent professionals who work in health and care. The documents were given to the CCG at a meeting in late January. So what next?

“The CCG has promised continuing discussion with LymeForward and Patient Participation Groups, as well as ‘public engagement’, while it develops the detail of the new contract over the next few months.

“With your help, LymeForward’s group will hold the CCG to this, and will use Lyme-online, the LymeForward website and whatever other means are available to make developments public.

DORSET County Council will increase council tax by almost six per cent this year, with more money to be spent on social care, early help and prevention.

Members of Dorset County Council met on Thursday to set the council’s budget and share of council tax for the next financial year.

At the meeting of the full council, members agreed to increase council tax by 5.99 per cent to help deal with inflation and bridge the funding gap in adult social care.

They agreed to raise council tax by 2.99 per cent (the maximum without triggering a local referendum), plus a further three per cent to fund adult social care – which is in line with the government’s six per cent levy (over a total three-year period). The increase in the county council’s share of council tax means a Band D household will pay £79.47 more a year, or £1.53 a week.

The three per cent social care precept will raise an additional £6.6million this year for the council to invest in adult social care.

Leader of Dorset County Council, Rebecca Knox, said that around two thirds of the budget would go towards children’s and adult social care – including offering help early on, providing services in places where people go and helping people to stay independent.

She said: “The way people lead their lives is constantly changing – particularly with the use of technology – so this means we need to adapt and be flexible in the way we deliver services.

“We must make the most of every pound to provide more personalised and community-based services that focus on prevention, early help and empowering people to live independently.

“Working with our partners, we all have a collective responsibility to make the most of every pound that Dorset has. We all face financial constraints, but this should not stop us listening to residents and making sure we are delivering services that make a positive difference to people’s lives.”

Councillor Tony Ferrari, Cabinet member for community and resources, said: “Although we are facing increasing demand for both children’s and adult’s social care, there’s also a lot of investment being made across Dorset – including our multi-million school improvement programme to deliver more school places, and recruiting more children’s social workers and foster carers to improve the lives of our most vulnerable children.”

Alongside a significant investment programme, the council has also set a target of saving of around £18.3million in 2018/19.

LymeForward launches memory café

A NEW memory café called Meet and Remember was launched by LymeForward this week.

The memory café sessions offer help and support to those suffering memory loss and in the early stages of dementia.

Sessions will be held on the third Wednesday of every month at Lyme Regis Football Club from 2pm, with the venue having been

donated free of charge.

Other funders of the café include the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis, and Lyme Regis Regatta & Carnival Committee.

The first session on Wednesday saw many volunteers offering their support, including a group of sixth form students from the Woodroffe School.

all those who had helped, offered advice and funding to LymeForward for Meet and Remember.

She said that future sessions would include helpful talks, advice, activities and games to help those suffering memory loss, and she hoped this could be the first step to Lyme Regis becoming a dementia-friendly town.

NEWS FROM CITIZENS ADVICE THE launch of the new LymeOnline newspaper on February 23 coincides with Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, which is aimed at highlighting the problems faced by those struggling to keep warm in their homes.

For some time Citizens Advice has been saying that energy bills have been too high and that consumers have been unfairly subsidising unjustified profits which are currently being made by the UK's gas and electricity companies.

Ofgem, the energy regulator, has now admitted that the energy costs that are being charged to consumers have been higher than had been expected when it set its latest price controls. Dermot Nolan, its chief executive, believes the returns being earned by the major energy suppliers needs to fall in the years ahead and that there should be confidence that their costs are being reflected efficiently and accurately in the bills that customers have to pay.

The local offices of Citizens Advice assist many people who are having problems with their energy bills and they have welcomed a new initiative by Energy UK, an organisation representing companies involved in the production and supply of electricity and gas for domestic and business consumers.

It has appointed a Commission for Customers in Vulnerable Circumstances and it will be looking at how energy suppliers, Government departments and Ofgem could better support customers in vulnerable circumstances. Among those it plans to consult are consumer groups representing the elderly and people with disabilities, experts on financial vulnerability and mental health charities.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, said: “This commission offers a real opportunity to ensure that vulnerable energy customers receive a better service and the right level of support.

“We’ve long argued that energy companies should do more to support their customers in vulnerable circumstances. All too often, these are customers who are paying over the odds for their energy and are treated poorly by their supplier.

“We look forward to working constructively with the Commission and to the development of concrete proposals that will make a meaningful difference to the lives of millions of vulnerable people.”

Lawrence Slade, who is chief executive of Energy UK, commented: “Identifying customers in vulnerable circumstances and providing the appropriate support customers need, and want, is a challenge that it not unique to energy companies.”

He said that society needs to take “huge leaps” forward in recognising and responding to the impact of vulnerable circumstances which “can be difficult to identify, are often complex and can be temporary or permanent”.

National Energy Action (NEA), which is running a Warm Homes Campaign in conjunction with Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, said it is concerned by the impact of low incomes, benefit cuts, the introduction of Universal Credit and above-inflation rises in the cost of essential goods and services, such as energy, are having on the poorest in society.

Citizens Advice holds weekly sessions at the St Michael’s Business Centre in Lyme Regis and, on a trial basis, is arranging to have advisers available at the town’s medical centre in Uplyme Road.

The sessions at St Michael's Business Centre are held from 10am to 3pm on Wednesdays, although it will be closed on March 21 when people will be able to go instead to the medical centre between 10.00am and midday. There will be other sessions at the medical centre on Monday, February 26 and Monday, March 12, also between 10am and 12noon.

Anyone is welcome to visit Citizens Advice, even if they do not have an appointment, and the advice they will be able to obtain is always free, confidential and impartial.

All known local organisations will be invited to take part by local organisations and lots will be drawn to decide which will be allocated space on the seafront to host fundraising events during the week.

There is space for 11 organisations to host events in the Marine Parade shelters and this year it will also be possible for groups to host games and activities on the beach.

Organisations will be able to host their fundraisers free of charge and keep the funds they raise, in return for providing four collectors during the Red Arrows display. Half of the collections money on Red Arrows day will be split between the partaking organisations, with the other half going towards the cost of the display.

Speaking at a recent town council meeting, the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, expressed concern that more than one organisation would be fundraising on each day this year, which she thought would split the funds.

The council’s administrative officer Adrianne Mullins, who presented the report on Community Week, said this had been suggested to make the week “more of an event” which would attract more residents and visitors to the seafront.

A REGULAR series commemorating the 100th anniversaries of the deaths of all men from Lyme Regis and the surrounding area who died in the First World War. This week, we remember Godfrey Turner, with thanks to Vernon Rattenbury from the Royal British Legion for the research.

GODFREY ERNEST JOHN TURNER Private, 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment Service No. 11090 Born 1886 in Lyme Regis and died on February 25 1918 in Belgium Godfrey Turner enlisted in Lyme Regis and initially served with the 5th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, being later in the war, transferred to the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment.

He sailed with the 5th Dorsets from Liverpool onboard RMS Aquitania, July 3 1915, landing under fire at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, August 6 1915. They remained in almost constant action during their time in Gallipoli until withdrawn on December 16 1915.

After a period manning the Suez Canal defences they left Egypt and arrived in Marseille, July 8 1916 from where they moved to the Somme front, arriving at Bouzincourt,

September 7 1916. On the September 26-27 1916 they took part in the Battle of Theipval Ridge. Many Dorset dead were later found well forward in the German positions. Casualties for the action were 63 dead, 260 wounded and 59 missing.

He was at some point was transferred to the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment who saw action at: Battle of Vimy Ridge, April 9-14 1917; Battle of Polygon Wood, September 26October 3 1917; Second Battle of Passchendaele, October 26-November 10 1917.

Godfrey was killed in action. The son of John and Anna Turner of Lyme Regis and husband of Florence Turner of 15 Sherborne Lane, Lyme Regis, he is buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Belgium, plot IX.D.3 and is commemorated on the Lyme Regis war memorials in the parish church and in the town.

OF all the weird and wonderful sights I have seen in the past 30 years as a media photographer this image takes the biscuit for outright stupidity. Without any thought for his family or the people who would have to risk their lives to try and save his, this opportunist climbed up ‘Grannies Teeth’ and slowly edged his way along the wall, not even looking behind or in front but stood looking through his camera at goodness knows what? It was late in the afternoon and on seeing this man climbing the wall I reached for my telephone but I had zero signal; had he been taken off the wall in to the sea or on to the concrete he would have died right in front of my eyes. I was a mile away with a very long telephoto lens and a growing sense of helplessness had anything happened to this guy. Would I have photographed him falling off the wall under a large wave? Yes, I would have, if only to shock any future daredevil snapper from repeating the same stupidity. Thankfully, lady-luck was with him that day and he lived to snap another day. I know what was going through his head, he was after that one ‘sensational’ picture that he has in the back of his mind. We’ve all been there; I was hit and knocked unconscious by a moving roller coaster, it should have killed me but I was lucky and came through it. Incidents like that put photography into perspective, so from then on I work on the understanding that there isn’t any photograph that’s worth more than your life.

The ‘local paper’ helps bind community together ■ DO you share my mixed feelings on welcoming LymeOnline?

This phoenix rises from the ashes of the View From stable of free papers that covered West Dorset, East Devon and South Somerset.

Local newspapers are being wiped out nationwide as advertising moves online: the wonder is not that the View From titles fell victim to that tide, but that they battled on so long despite it.

When papers die, so do jobs. The talented, predominantly young team that brought us our free weekly news, information and comment must now hunt for jobs in a difficult climate.

When a community paper dies, the staff pay the most direct and human price; but also lost is something of what binds the community together.

‘The local paper’ has for generations been one of the most important ways that those who live in a place access a common store of knowledge about it, share ideas and wishes for it, and hold to account those who govern it.

Social media, even when responsibly used, cannot fulfil those needs.

Regret at what’s lost, then. But also a welcome for the new - an online source of things we need to know, a fresh way for the community to talk with itself about what matters.

For elderly stick-in-the-muds like me, it’s good to know that a regular print version will arrive in my letterbox (a logistical feat in itself); it’s great that the coverage is Lyme, Charmouth and Uplyme, recognising a neighbourly inter-dependence that transcends both boundary-lines on a map and political inwardness.

So good luck to the new venture. Even more than luck, it will need the support of its advertisers, most of them local businesses.

Among the many contributions that business makes to our community, its share in sustaining a serious local ‘press’ – even if ‘press’ is no longer a true descriptor – is a vital social good.

Let’s welcome that, too.

Pedestrian crossing a waste of money ■ IT would seem that Lyme Regis Town council-

lors are hell bent on copying Bridport in wasting money.

Bridport has a cycle path that no one can see was needed, Lyme is manoeuvring to install a pedestrian crossing that only a few councillors seem to think is necessary.

I know 600 signed a petition to install one but I wonder how it was worded because I never saw it.

Councillor Cheryl Reynolds is quoted as saying, “I know you’ll say it will back up the traffic but in the summer there traffic is already backed up and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Yes, alright, but what about all the waffle on trying to streamline the flow of traffic through the town then?

If, as the Dorset County Council (DCC) report says, we could not have it adjacent to the Royal Lion Hotel entrance, how close is the suggested site to the Three Cups, to say nothing about the loss of parking spaces?

I have lived in Lyme since 1972, in our early days here the main A35 trunk road ran through Lyme Regis and we all managed to cross the road with no accidents then.

It does not matter where you put a crossing here, people will still cross the road wherever they happen to be standing. To say that we are the only town with no crossing is beside the point.

Let DCC spend the money on something useful, like mending a few potholes.

Change in the village hall, drive a mile or two up the hill to a flat but bumpy pitch, get covered in mud and drive back to the village hall to change.

Not that Lyme Regis Reserves were complaining. With so many other games called off because of the heavy rain in recent weeks, they were glad to get a match, even if it meant that there was little chance of any attractive football being played on what in essence is a farmer’s field.

But if it means the young men of Awliscombe and district get a regular game of football, so be it.

This is true grass roots football.

The Seasiders arrived for their first visit to Awliscombe lying in third place in the Devon & Exeter League’s Division Five, three points behind leaders Halwill on the same number of games played with a good chance of staying in the promotion race.

Awliscombe are not faring so well, languishing down in 11th place with 13 points from 13 games but demonstrated early on that they were no pushovers.

Any thoughts that this might be a walkover for Lyme were soon scuppered as the home defenders stood firm against an early onslaught.

The Seasiders were without an established striker, the role being filled by utility player Steven Batey (pictured), not averse to putting himself about a bit.

Lyme dominated the early exchanges and their first real chance came when a Fred Thomson glancing header skidded past the post after ten minutes.

Ben Vine, buzzing in midfield, tested the home keeper with a long-range shot and a similar effort from winger Sam Bevis saw the keeper in action again.

Batey was clearly making his presence felt with Bevis and Thomson on both flanks looking dangerous.

Lyme’s best chance came on 38 minutes when a Jake Bearpark drive was deflected over the bar, the ball ricocheting off a defender.

The Seasiders finally split the home defence when a rare Awliscombe attack was snuffed out by Lyme’s keeper Will Meech, who raced off his goal line and

The few faithful Lyme supporters who travelled to Awliscombe expected the floodgates to open after their side had edged in front but the Awliscombe defence held firm until half-time.

It was much the same story after the restart but, as the game progressed, the more problems Batey was causing. In the 55th minute he latched onto a good through ball but placed it wide and a few minutes later hit the post with a menacing header.

The heavy conditions started to take their toll and manager Gerard Hitchcock brought on Mark Bailey as a substitute to add a bit of finesse to midfield, followed by Ben Turner, who soon made his presence felt with a number of crunching tackles, and Joel Gostling.

Lyme’s best move of the game came in the 62nd minute, culminating in a dangerous cross from the hard working Vine, which was skied over the bar from close range by Bearpark.

A late chance to seal the victory went begging in the 85th minute when a long throw-in from Batey rebounded off Bailey onto the woodwork.

Whilst this might not have been a great game for the purists to watch, it was a good old fashioned slog in difficult conditions with neither side prepared to give an inch.

Lyme were uncompromising in defence with centre backs Wally Blackmore and Mark Batey conceding little.

Seasiders cling on to chance of promotion

philip@lyme-online.co.uk LYME Regis’ hopes of winning promotion to the Devon & Exeter League Premier Division - the highest level in which the club has ever played - are hanging by a thread.

Back in October when the sun was shining the Seasiders’ first string were storming it at the top of the table, looking every bit a promotion-chasing side.

Since then the sun has rarely shone and it’s hardly stopped raining. Lyme are still hanging in there in second place in the Division One table - but that’s mainly due to the number of games that have been washed out in recent weeks rather than the winning of points.

No football has been played at the Davey Fort for 10 weeks and I understand from

groundsman Billy White that at least a couple of weeks without rain are needed before a game can be staged at the cliffside pitch.

Lyme’s bid to stay in the fray was eased when they travelled to Dartmoor for a workmanlike 3-1 victory over Chagford, making up for a disappointing performance in their previous last game at the beginning of December when they lost 4-1 in a pretty dismal showing at Perry Street.

Last Saturday’s game at home to Heavitree was called off because of the condition of the pitch, along with dozens of others in the region. This Saturday (February 24) the Seasiders are away to Alphington 2nds, who are bottom of the table with just two wins from 15 games.

It’s inconceivable to think that Lyme will return home to Dorset without any points.

If the Seasiders are to stay in the mix it will be necessary for some of the chasing clubs to drop points - and that could well happen with the number of games they have to play to catch up.

Lyme are sitting in second place in the table six points behind leaders University of Exeter 2nds, both sides having played 14 games.

However, sitting menacingly in third spot is nearneighbours Colyton, who are just four points adrift from Lyme but have six games in hand. In fact, three other teams - Lapford, Perry Street and Sidmouth 2nds - can catch Lyme if they win all their catch-up games.

This means that Lyme cannot afford to drop any more points in their remaining 10 games, which is a big ask.

Peacock was not so fortunate last Saturday, however, as he missed a penalty in the Rovers’ 3-0 defeat at Crewkerne Rangers in the Daisy Hutchings Cup. The Rovers are on cup duty this week, entertaining Farway Reserves in the BIll Bailey Cup. Uplyme, not having the best of seasons, are also on cup duty with a tough home tie in the Arthur Gage Cup against Division One leaders Farway United.

Charmouth are going great guns in Division Two and face Misterton Reserves at home in the Tommey Tabberer Cup.

Cricketers to launch appeal for new roller LOCAL cricketers are launching a fundraising campaign to honour a former chairman - and ensure cricket can continue to be played at the King George V playing field in Uplyme.

The trusty roller used by Uplyme & Lyme Regis Cricket Club for many years is no longer serviceable and a replacement could cost as much as £8,000.

Club members have agreed to enter into a lease-buy arrangement which means they will have to outlay £2,000 next season, to be paid in three instalments and then have the opportunity to purchase the roller outright if their fundraising efforts are successful.

The new roller, which will be stored in the old pavilion, will be dedicated to former chairman Paul Messer, who died recently.

Current chairman Ian Thomas told LymeOnline Sport that it was essential to have a roller in order to prepare wickets to the standard

expected by the Devon Cricket League.

“Paul steered the club through some difficult times and we thought it appropriate to honour his memory by naming the roller, crucial to any cricket club, in his memory,” he said.

The club is seeking grant aid through the ECB sponsored Chance To Shine initiative and Lyme Regis Town Council, and is also looking at the possibility of a Crowdfunding campaign.

Last year was a particularly difficult one for the club which had to withdraw its 2nd X1 from the Devon League due to a lack of players.

But with a new committee in place and renewed enthusiasm, the club is looking forward to a better season which commences the last week in April.

A highlight of the season is likely to be welcoming a touring team from VAR Amsterdam to the King George V field in July.

This week he won by three clear points in his brilliant 36 points with a string of excellent holes including four points on the 12th, one of two birdies in this very successful round.

David Lock, returning steadily to form, was level with Dave Riches, both on 33 points, but Lock’s steadier back nine earned him second place.

SW football to be reorganised FOLLOWING a meeting with the Devon and Cornwall Football Associations, the South West Peninsula and Devon and Exeter Leagues, the Football Association has instigated talks on the restructuring of football in the South West.

A proposal under discussion would restructure football in the South West from season 2019/20. The region would have two Step 6 and three Step 7 leagues covering Devon, Cornwall and parts of Dorset and Somerset.

The FA Leagues Committee agreed the outline of the plan at a meeting earlier this month.

It is hoped to confirm the planned reorganisation at The FA’s Leagues Committee meeting when it next meets on Tuesday, April 10.
