Divers fined after rescue for breaking lockdown

HELICOPTERS, LIFEBOATS AND ROYAL NAVY SHIP INVOLVED TWO divers were fined for breaking lockdown rules, after a major search and rescue operation was launched when one of them went missing. Coastguards received a call at

3.23pm on Saturday, April 25 from a friend of the missing man who had been diving off the same boat, five miles south of Lyme Regis. The two divers, one from Cornwall and the other from Edinburgh, had both been staying in

Bridport and were diving for scallops when one of them became detached from his surface buoy/marker. He had been diving without a buddy. The marker buoy was discovered by the other man aboard the boat with no diver attached. He

then contacted the coastguard to inform them of his missing friend. Lifeboat crews from Lyme Regis and Exmouth were launched, as well Lyme Regis coastguards and the search and rescue helicopters CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

LOCAL authorities across the South West have received an extra £160million from the government to help them deal with the coronavirus pandemic, but Dorset Council has already warned this will not be enough. The government is providing an additional £1.6billion to local authorities across the country to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with the pandemic. This is in addition to the £1.6billion already announced in March and represents an unprecedented level of financial support in recent times. Dorset Council will receive £10,411,613 in the latest round of funding, in addition to the £10,665,165 it received in March – a total of £21,076,778. However, it announced last week that it was incurring additional costs of £13million per month as it supports residents, communities and businesses through the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Dorset Council’s first round of government funding was spent within the first month of the pandemic and the council warned that additional funds of a similar amount would not cover the shortfall.
