Christmas thanks for emergency services

VOLUNTEERS from Lyme Regis lifeboat and fire crews received some early Christmas presents from the local Co-op store this week. The lifeboat and fire crews have remained on-call throughout the pandemic and were thanked for their bravery and dedication to the Lyme Regis community with Christmas goodies from staff at the Co-op store in Broad Street. The store also donated Christmas treats to be distributed via the foodbank to families in need. Store manager Karl Josko said: “We wanted to say thank you to those in the community who have gone above and beyond this year, and what better people than the volunteers of RNLI and the fire crew. These guys are on call 24/7 and have had a busy year.”

Council toughens up on seafront drinking LYME Regis Town Council has agreed that tougher rules on drinking alcohol on the seafront should be enforced after a troublesome summer. Incidents of anti-social behaviour increased during the first national lockdown and into the summer months, with the town council resorting to employing its own security guards to patrol the seafront and public gardens during the six-week summer holiday. Now councillors have agreed to request a behaviour related Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) from Dorset Council, which will give enforcement officers and police more powers to deal with those drinking in public areas, including the seafront, Langmoor and Lister Gardens. Police and enforcement officers will be given the power to stop people from drinking alcohol to prevent public nuisance, public disorder or anti-social behaviour, and could ask drinkers to surrender any alcohol in their possession. Similar restrictions are already in place in Bridport and West Bay. Cllr Michaela Ellis said she agreed with the new PSPO but was concerned how it would be enforced and did not want the council to go down the route of employing private security guards again. The Mayor, Cllr Brian Larcombe MBE, said this had been necessary over the summer and had helped the council’s argument for an increased police presence in the town. Cllr Gillian Stammers said that enforcing the new PSPO would put a lot of responsibility on the town council’s own enforcement officers. The mayor agreed, adding that they would need as much support as possible.

Three nurses from Lyme Regis were among those to help administer the vaccines, with deputy mayor Cllr Stan Williams, in his 80s, among the first to receive the jab. Dr Karen Kirkham GP, clinical lead for Dorset COVID-19 vaccination programme and assistant clinical director of NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said:

“As a local GP in Dorset, I’m so proud of the huge effort that has been made locally to deliver this next phase of the vaccination programme. “I would like to say a personal thank you to all of the local GPs, nurses, pharmacists, support and logistical staff, other primary care
