Uplyme ‘let down’ on highways problems UPLYME councillors have said the parish has been “let down” by Devon County Council, following slow response to deal with a number of highways issues in the village. Uplyme has been hit by a number of road closures and diversions in recent weeks, as well as “dangerous” potholes caused by the bad weather. County councillor Ian Hall apologised at a recent parish council meeting, saying he was “less than impressed” with the way the matters had been handed. REPORT, PAGE 8
Fears over future of Charmouth post office
WEATHER forecasters say there’s a heatwave on the way but it was a very different story in Lyme Regis earlier this week where mountainous waves provided surfers with a last chance to demonstrate their skills before the calmer seas usher in the summer Photo by RICHARD AUSTIN
Cross-border angst Lyme and Uplyme councils in dispute over park and ride
RELATIONSHIPS between Lyme Regis Town Council and their cross-border neighbours in Uplyme are at an all-time low over differing accounts surrounding the park and ride debacle. The town council succeeded in getting the park and ride scheme at Charmouth Road in place by the Easter weekend, after planning permission to extend the times it could operate was obtained from West Dorset District Council by

philip@lyme-online.co.uk land owner Dick Wellman. However, the council was unable to operate it as the ground was too wet following the recent heavy storms. But an application for temporary permission for the Sidmouth Road scheme was not submitted to East Devon District Council until early in March and was subsequently opposed by Uplyme Parish Council. The parish council said that, while
they wanted to support the application for the traders and public of Lyme Regis, they had no option but to recommend refusal because the town council had overlooked the support and advice offered by East Devon and had shown disregard to comply with their requirements.
They also expressed disappointment that there had been “no collaboration” from Lyme Regis Town Council, and said they were surprised that an application was being sought before a traffic management plan was put in place.
A recent town council meeting, however, Lyme councillor Stephen Miller said they had been working “extremely closely with East Devon Council” to resolve the issue. The dispute is likely to generate some awkward questions at tonight’s (Friday) annual town meeting in Lyme Regis where parishioners are able to question councillors about their concerns
over how the town is run. FULL STORY ON PAGE 3
THERE has been a post office in Charmouth for 224 years – but there is increasing concern about the future of the current PO in The Street. Sub-postmaster Steve Pile is doing all he can to secure the survival of the village post office, but he has revealed in an article in Shoreline, the village magazine, that it may be forced to close.
