Lyme heads to the polls
CHARMOUTH Post Office, one of the oldest in the country, is to close on Wednesday, May 22 and as of yet no plans have been put in place to relocate the service. There has been a post office in Charmouth for 224 years and for the past 20 years the facility has been run by Steve and Gill Pile in the centre of the village. Mr Pile, 70, has wanted to retire for six years but put his retirement on hold whilst negotiations have continued with Post Office Ltd. to find a successor. Discussions have taken place with other businesses in Charmouth but to no avail and Mr and Mrs Pile are still hoping that some post office services may be available as an ‘outreach’ service as in other areas where post offices have closed. With no other banking or free cash facility in the village, it is feared that the closure of the post office will have a detrimental effect on local businesses. After announcing that the post office would close in May, Mr Pile described the manner. in which Post Office Ltd. had dealt with the pending closure was “disgraceful”. REPORT, PAGE 8
