Life in Lyme Regis continues at a pace AS Lyme draws breath after another fabulous summer, the town gears up for a number-of-out of season events which will keep the visitors pouring into their favourite seaside resort. And it will give the locals the chance to let their hair down after the rigours of another hectic season.

This year there’s a new attraction which is bound to be popular among all lovers of Lyme. The town council has invested in lighting up the public gardens, adding a touch of magic to the already popular walkway to the Cobb.

Among the welcome guests to Lyme this summer was regular visit by a friendly dolphin, who fascinated the crowds and boating fraternity. Local award-winning photographer Richard Austin, who specialises in animal subjects, was quick off the mark to capture this fascinating creature (see pages 14 & 15).

This issue also features the refurbishment of Lyme’s historic parish church, the only grade I listed building in the town, and have you wondered what’s behind those huge black doors below the Marine Theatre? Our feature writer Sophia Moseley provides the answer.

ST MICHAEL’S PARISH CHURCH

An architectural &historical gem

THE Church of St Michael The Archangel, arguably Lyme Regis’ most historically-significant building, is currently surrounded in scaffolding as its tower undergoes major repair work.

Battered by all weathers, a church - in one form or another - has perched of the cliff-top since Saxon times, the earliest record being 980AD, making it one of the earliest dating churches in the local area, along with Wareham and Sidford.

The baptistery and part of the tower above is the oldest part of the church, ‘modernised’ by the Normans in about 1120AD and expanded in height in the 16th century to its current 58 feet, which dominates the Lyme Regis skyline.

The tower is now suffering from significant water ingress and the baptistery below has had to be closed to the public as plaster falls from the walls.

In a time when many churches are being modernised for more varied uses, Lyme is considered very lucky to have retained such an historical and architectural gem; its interior having been little changed since the nave - the central part of the church - was built in 1506.

Later additions have included the gallery, built in 1611 and now home to the impressive Skrabl organ - an attraction in itself. Having been built in Slovenia, it arrived in Lyme in 300,000 pieces in 2009 after a major fundraising campaign.

The vestry was added by the Victorians in 1885 and they also carried out a major works inside the church to level the flooring.

St Michael’s - the only grade I listed building in the town - provides a feast for the eyes with so many historical features to explore, including fine examples of Jacobean wood carvings - none standing out more so than the intricately-decorated pulpit, dating back to 1613 and donated to the church by a former mayor of the town.

Many other features came in the 1800s, including the large Victorian font and impressive hanging cover, erected in memory of the Reverend Frederick Parry.

The chancel screen was erected in 1889 with a large cross on top, and above, an 1850s painting of the raising of the cross can be seen.

The walls of St Michael’s house many commemorative plaques and decorative items, including a large tapestry above the north aisle. This depicts a royal wedding, thought to be of future King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, made in about 1500. It was given to the church in the 19th century by the Reverend Edward Peak.

The church also boasts many beautiful stained glass windows, several depicting religious scenes and one dedicated to those from the town who lost their lives during the First World War. Other windows commemorate some of Lyme’s most notable citizens, including Thomas Coram, who established the Foundling Hospital in London in 1739, and famed fossil hunter Mary Anning, whose window was installed by The Geological Society of London and looks out over her grave in the churchyard, where visitors regularly leave flowers and their own fossils.

The church tower houses a clock - currently stopped while repairs are carried out - and 10 bells, one inscribed ‘O Sea: Spare Me’, nodding to the building’s proximity to the cliff edge.

The bells are rung every Thursday evening for practice, every Sunday morning and for special occasions, but are expected to fall silent for a few months while repairs are carried out on the tower, hopefully finishing in time for Christmas.

Although work has already started, the church still needs to raise the remaining £30,000 to reach the total project cost and is holding regular fundraisers.

Coming to life after dark

A SPLASH of colour has been added to Lyme Regis’ seafront gardens, thanks to a new lighting scheme launched by the town council.

The coloured lighting display has been months in the making, and the big switch-on was finally held in September, with the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, doing the honours.

The effective scheme, made up of more than 60 lights, was designed by Lymelight, the team behind a similar display at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.

It has illuminated the tree canopies at the top of Langmoor and Lister Gardens in various colours, making more of a feature of the Woodland Walk footpaths.

The lights, met with a resounding positive reaction from residents and visitors, will be a permanent feature in the gardens, switched on every night from dusk until 11pm, and the colours can be changed to suit specific times of year and occasions, such as Christmas.

The new illuminations are the latest project carried out in an effort to revamp Langmoor and Lister Gardens - one of the town’s main visitor attractions which were completely recreated as part of major land stabilisation works in 2007.

adjoining Lister Gardens, named after Lord Lister of Lyme Regis, pioneer of antiseptic surgery. The Lister Gardens now provide a more open grassy bank and are home to the popular mini golf, table tennis and HIX Oyster & Fish House.

The original gardens were opened over a century ago, the land having been bought through a bequest to the town from Joseph Moly of Langmoor Manor, in Charmouth, and the gardens were named in honour of the donation.

The new Langmoor Gardens are a quiet and tranquil space, with plenty of winding paths to wander along, and grassed areas and benches to sit with a picnic and enjoy the spectacular views across the historic Cobb harbour, Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast.

The slopes were known to be unstable and concrete buttresses had been built to prevent movement.

However, there were still periodic slippages of mud on to Marine Parade throughout the 20th century, eventually rendering the lower part of the gardens unusable.

Maintained by town council staff, the planting is designed to encourage wildlife. Low shrubs have been planted for cover, with grasses and seed-bearing plants for food.

In 1962, land to the west of these gardens suffered a catastrophic landslip following attempted development and several houses were destroyed. This land was eventually taken over by the town, becoming the

FOLLOW THE LYME REGIS SCULPTURE TRAIL ALONGSIDE the traditional seaside amenities of a mini golf course and table tennis, the Lyme Regis Sculpture Trail, launched in 2015, brings a more modern element to Langmoor and Lister Gardens, showcasing a range of contemporary sculptures by local artists.

Managed by the Arts Development Company and partially-funded by Lyme Regis Town Council, the trail is said to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, providing a unique outdoor gallery for local artists, and offering free art for residents and visitors.

The featured artworks are selected each year from established and upcoming artists. The Arts Development Company has already secured £5,000 towards the trail for the coming year and is now sourcing match-funding, with the hope of working further with local businesses keen to support the project.

Making a splash!

BY PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD AUSTIN DOLPHIN visits to Lyme Regis are rare occasions. It seems that every few years, including this summer, a single dolphin turns up causing waves of excitement among residents and visitors.

On one occasion in the early 1990s a pod of dolphins arrived within a mile of the beach and stayed for a couple of weeks. All mackerel fishing trips were cancelled for dolphin watching trips and the lucky visitors went home with a big smile on their faces.

In 1994 I was on my way to Taunton when I got a call from Lyme’s assistant harbourmaster, Mike Higgs, telling me there were dolphins everywhere just off the Cobb.

On arrival, local boatman Steve Postles took me out and the first picture I bagged was three dolphins jumping out of the water. The set of pictures were published the following day in the national newspapers, encouraging an onslaught of people coming to the town to get a dolphin experience - they were not disappointed.

There are many memorable events regarding Lyme’s dolphins, especially when one popped up alongside fisherman Harry May’s boat and turned over like a shaggy old dog to have his belly rubbed, to which Harry of course obliged.

What lies beyond the black doors?

STONE, grit, bits of rag and swimming costumes are just some of the items found in the ‘wet well’ and most of them are found at the Cobb Gate end of operations. Apparently swimming cozies are flushed down the pan of the public loos near the Cobb Arms with monotonous regularity.

“The three Ps… poo, pee and paper,” Haden of South West Water told me with a serious smile on his face, “are the only things that should find their way down here”.

Many will walk along Gun Cliff Walk without giving a thought to what lies beneath them through the enormous black doors.

A machine called a roadheader was used to excavate this enormous, cathedral-sized space that sees sewage pass along its two miles of pipework at the rate of 62 litres per second, taking it under the Rainbow Store on Bridge Street and continuing under Anning Road playing field before reaching the treatment plant in Uplyme.

last September. I had fairly low expectations of seeing anything of interest. But as I descended deeper underground along the steel mesh stairs and walkways, and saw miles of pipework that stretched far into the distance along dark and gloomy tunnels, I half expected a handsomely bruised and artfully grazed Bruce Willis to appear any second.

But for my recent trip it was just me, Haden and Andy, who took time out of their busy day to show me round and, after giving up any hope of seeing an action hero, they explained the mechanics behind the whole operation.

I first ventured down into the bowels of this huge sewage pumping station, that lives under Theatre Square, when they had their open day

You reach ‘Area A’ through a series of impenetrable doors labelled ‘Zoning gas doors keep shut at all times’. The system of secure doors, sensors and alarms is designed to prevent leakage of methane and hydrogen sulfide (H2S); I was reassuringly told that’s the gas that smells of rotten eggs and the same gas that will first of all numb the sensors in your nasal passages then swiftly numb the rest of you.

Next to Area F and the ‘dry well’, which is the deepest part of the site eight metres below sea level, is the ‘wet well’ and this is where my curiosity was satisfied.

Have you seen those gigantic Transformer type lorries that arrive twice a year and park up outside the enormous black, wooden doors? Turns out that’s specialist contractor ClearFlow who are tasked with removing the build-up of solids from the wet well.

Wearing specialist breathing apparatus they climb down into the wet well (the wet well and storm culvert can hold 2000m3 of storm water) to do what must be one of the worst jobs in the country. Using high powered deep suction equipment, they remove the solid matter that collects at the bottom of the well.

Not surprisingly the huge chopper propellers that shred everything before it goes into the well have to be replaced annually, a pump unit alone costs up to £20k.

Pre-1996, the raw sewage was simply pumped straight out to sea; now the clean and treated water that makes its way back from the Uplyme treatment works is pumped back through the pumping station then 600m out at sea.

But it’s not just about functionality, that tower at the corner of Theatre Square that many people think is part of Lyme’s history was built purely for aesthetic reasons and is actually a ventilation shaft.

The last part of my visit took me into the most important part of Area A according to Andy. The Mess Room is a large rectangular room that is sparsely furnished along with a kitchen sink, kettle and fridge, and whilst there were no muscle rippling torn T-shirt wearing action heroes leaping about, I can’t help but feel the team who make their way down into the wet well twice a year are more than a match for Brucie.

OWNS up and down the country will be celebrating Guy Fawkes Night this November but there can’t be many locations better suited than Lyme Regis to host a stunning display of fireworks and a beach bonfire.

The annual celebration commemorates the capture of Guy Fawkes – Britain’s most notorious traitor – who attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gunpowder in 1605.

Disappointed by the failure of James I’s peace treaty negotiations with Spain to improve their position, a handful of young Catholic gentlemen from the Midlands, some of whom had been involved in previous plotting, decided to take action.

In May 1604 Robert Catesby proposed a plan to blow up the King, together with the House of Lords and the House of Commons during the ceremonial opening of Parliament, and later seize Princess Elizabeth, the only one of King James' children who would not be at the ceremony.

It’s a real community affair – with residents and businesses donating wood for the fire, volunteers from the local football club and town council staff helping to build it on the sand, and the gig club helping to clear away the debris the next morning.

But on November 4th 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught red-handed in the basement of the House of Lords with 36 barrels of gunpowder, and his capture is now commemorated each year with bonfires and burning effigies.

A spectacular fireworks display will light up the harbour as it’s set off from the Cobb and the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, is expected to light the bonfire as they finish.

Organised each year by town crier Alan Vian and wife Lynne, bonfire night is always a highlight of the winter calendar in Lyme Regis, with this year’s events being held on Saturday, November 2nd.

So get those sparklers ready and grab a front-row seat on Marine Parade or in Lister Gardens, where the new coloured illuminations (see pages 6 & 7) will add to the spectacle – this is a show not to be missed!

Lyme nostalgia Philip Evans shares his favourite memories of the Lyme 1200 Festival

T

HE first recorded settlement in Lyme Regis was in the year 774 when monks from Sherborne monastery were granted “the land and one manse” to extract salt from the River Lim.

There followed decades of history, during which time Lyme had fought a battle with the royalists; been granted royal recognition by the addition of Regis to its name; become an important port larger than Liverpool; sent ships to the Armada; found its niche as a watering hole for rich Victorians; and emerged as truly one of the West Country’s most beautiful and popular resorts - a status we retain to this day.

But the existence of that first settlement was not celebrated until 1974, shortly after the borough council was replaced by the town council, when it was decided to hold a six-week long early summer festival called Lyme 1200, marking the town’s 1,200th anniversary.

By 1974 I had been running the Regatta and Carnival for five years, making it one of the biggest events of its kind along the south coast, and the town council asked if I would organise the Lyme 1200 festival, which ran through May and June of that year with 75 different events and activities that reflected Lyme’s history but, more importantly, demonstrated what a vibrant community we lived in.

A committee was formed, headed up by Alderman Douglas Fortnam. I was named as festival organiser and a local girl, Valerie Curtis, aged just 19, was appointed festival administrator. We were given an office to work out of in the old Borough Council offices in Broad Street where Val and I beavered away on Saturday mornings for many months.

Months of planning went into the programme, with our brief being to involve as many local organisations and interests as possible. The council set a budget but I can’t remember how much that was. Alderman Fortnam, however, kept a keen eye on expenditure.

The support from the townspeople and local organisations was fantastic. As far as I can remember, there was only one real flop and that was a festival barbecue at St Albans, hosted

by Dennis and Sheila Applebee. Music was provided by the Harbour Lights steel band, plenty of people turned up but the provider of the barbecue did not.

We all pitched in to try and thaw out frozen chicken from the St Albans kitchen, but by the time we achieved this, everyone had gone home! Still, the music was good.

One event which does stick in mind was an appearance at the festival banquet by Lyme-born singer-songwriter Adrian Loveridge, who flew over from Los Angeles especially to sing the four songs he had composed to mark the celebrations in his hometown.

Adrian, whose stage name was Adrian St James, was the son of Jack and Estella Loveridge who emigrated to the United States in 1955 when Adrian was eight years-old.

He became quite a name in the Californian music business, both as a performer but particularly as a song writer, winning a Gold Disc for writing a number called ‘Loving You Baby’, sung by the late Laura Branigan, which sold 500,000 copies.

I worked alongside Adrian to get the four songs he penned for Lyme 1200 laid down as an EP titled ‘My Town’. The four songs were called ‘Lyme Regis Down By

The Bay’, ‘Town Where Your Daddy Was Born’, ‘One More Time’ and ‘Island By The Sea’.

My favourite was ‘Town Where Your Daddy Was Born’ ) but I thought all of them were excellent compositions with Adrian succeeding in getting references to Lyme’s colourful history into the lyrics.

Adrian returned to Lyme to live many years later and, under his real name, he wrote two songs - ‘Forever Beautiful’ and ‘Queen of Hearts’ - in memory of Princess Diana from the people of Lyme Regis - which were recorded onto a casette.

One amusing interlude of the festival for me came when we booked Joe Loss, one of the most famous band leaders of his time, to play at the festival ball. Mr Loss and his orchestra were late in arriving at Lyme , thinking it was nearer Bournemouth and not quite so far west.

As the famous Mr Loss was changing into a tuxedo in the sports master’s tiny changing room at the back of the Woodroffe School stage, I was summoned. To be honest, as a big band fan, I was a bit in awe of his, but there was this great man, resplendent in his Y-fronts, apologising to me, saying it had never happened before, and offering to play an extra hour at the end of the evening!

It turned out to be a fantastic night. I can’t recall seeing so many people on the dance floor where they stayed all evening.

A number of festival souvenirs were produced as a permanent reminder of the six weeks in the summer of 1974 when the people of Lyme let their hair down. These included a folder with all you needed to know about the events, a festival magazine, an illustrated map of the town and a set of wall plates.

The Courtyard Café can also cater for special dietary requirements and offers catering for private functions, with space for up to 26 people in the cosy café which overlooks the River Lim. The environmentally-conscious café recycles 80 per cent of its waste. Bottles, tins, plastic, paper and cardboard go back to The Bottle Man, and raw food waste, coffee grout and tea leaves go to Trill Farm Organics to grow vegetables, herbs and salad.

The Black Dog Tea Room is dog-friendly so a walk up the River Lim with your furry friend can end with a lovely cup of tea and a cake, snack or a filling lunch with Rod and Sonia serving up generous helpings, all lovingly made by hand and excellently presented.

Nearly everything is made on the premises - bread, rolls, cakes and scones - and they use locally-sourced produce where possible. The bacon for the Somerset brie and bacon rolls comes from Colyton Butchers, the eggs used in the roasted pepper, mushroom and cherry tomato quiche are free range and come from just up the road, and the toast used in Rod's Rustic Rarebit is made on site using flour hand-milled at the Town Mill in Lyme Regis.

With need for more space, Rod and Sonia have built a summerhouse as an extension to the light and airy tea room, with the idea that it can be hired out for meetings or private lunches. It looks out over the landscaped garden, where you can also enjoy lunch on those warmer days, and has a lovely view of the Lym Valley.

The Black Dog Tea Room is on Lyme Road heading towards Lyme Regis and is open every day except Wednesdays, when Rod and Sonia can instead be found walking their two dogs, Martha and Jorge, along the east beach towards Charmouth, Martha chasing the seagulls and Jorge meeting new friends to play with, and Rod and Sonia enjoying the walk and sea air.

The Royal Standard is open for lunches and dinner, offering generous, unpretentious quality. The pub specialises in simple country cooking with traditional favourites and using ingredients from local suppliers wherever possible.

OW firmly-established as one of Lyme’s most popular wining and dining venues after a near £2million refurbishment, the Collyns family are looking forward to their second Christmas at the Pilot Boat.

The pub and restaurant is run by experienced licensees Robin and Angela, and their son Ben, and with a 100-seat restaurant and covers also available in the bar and on their terrace, the Pilot is undoubtedly one of Lyme’s busiest eating out venues.

Last year the Collyns family invested heavily in turning the expansive bar and restaurant into a Christmas winter wonderland, winning many plaudits from customers, and this year they will be doing the same to ensure their patrons enjoy the full Christmas experience.

The Pilot’s special Christmas menu will be available from Friday, November 29th and run until Christmas Eve (see below).

A traditional Christmas turkey dinner with all the trimmings tops the bill, but there are also vegetarian alternatives such as the more unusual jackurkey. Christmas dinner pizza is also on offer, as is grilled sea bass and sea bream fillets.

There are three starter options - parsnip soup with parsnip and paprika crisps (suitable for vegetarians), smoked salmon

mousse with melba toast and mini rosemary and garlic baked camembert and cranberry sauce with toasted bread.

Traditional Christmas pudding with brandy custard is a must, of course, but there are two alternatives - orange and cinnamon pudding with Grand Marnier cream and Belgian chocolate fondant with berry compote.

But diners do not have to choose from the Christmas menu, they can mix and match with the Pilot’s winter menu or, indeed, come up with their own menu ideas to suit their personal tastes and budget.

Special Christmas cocktails and mulled wine will also be on offer.

The Pilot’s popular music nights on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays will continue during the Christmas period.

As part of their new winter menu, the Pilot has increased its range of pizzas which are now available to takeaway (collection only), ranging in price from £10 to £14 with a special offer on Tuesdays when it’s possible to get two margherita pizzas for the price of one (£10).

Other toppings include ham and mushroom, crayfish tails and pepperoni and there’s also a vegetarian alternative with mozzarella, artichokes, roasted peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and olives (£13).

HE ROYAL Lion Hotel stands proud and imposing in the centre of Lyme less than 100 metres from the sea – a haven for guests since the days it was built in 1601 as a coaching inn.

It’s not difficult to imagine a coach and four pulling up outside the Royal Lion, the horses being refreshed as top-hatted travellers take advantage of Dorset hospitality before continuing their journey. Add a few flakes of falling snow and you have a typical Christmas card scene.

Steeped in history but fully refurbished, the Royal Lion retains much of its history and unique charm - oak beams, wood panelling and an open fire helping to create a warm, welcoming and comfortable atmosphere with an enviable reputation for friendly service, first class cuisine and impressive leisure facilities.

But for the people of Lyme Regis, the Lion is much more than a place where the visitors, many of whom return year after year, stay to enjoy the delights of their favourite West Country holiday destination.

Trendy bars and exotic drinks may well be in vogue as Lyme’s reputation as a foodies’ destination increases summer by summer, but the Royal Lion retains its reputation of being the go-to venue when it comes to enjoying a drink with friends and family, where conversation is not drowned by blaring background music. There is, shall we say, a touch of old-school hospitality at the Lion.

And whilst providing excellent accom-

modation and superb cuisine for Lyme’s more discerning holidaymakers is paramount to the success of the Royal Lion, proprietor Lesley Stone has made it a priority during her 17 years running the hotel to ensure that the Lion is very much a part of the community, supporting numerous local good causes and dispensing hospitality at Lyme’s Broad Street events, such as the annual Carols Around the Tree.

For many local families, my own included, it’s very much a tradition to attend the carol service and retire to the Lion for Christmas drinks.

Christmas Eve afternoon is also very much a tradition for those who return to their hometown to catch up with old friends and enjoy some seasonal refreshment, with the log fires blazing away in the main bar.

Miss Stone is also keen to emphasise that non-residents are welcome to attend the special events staged in the Royal Lion for speciality weekend guests.

These include two murder mystery weekends in November (8th/9th and 22nd/23rd). The first of these (November 9th), entitled ‘Voodoo You Think You Are’, revolves around investigations into a village archive which reveals some dastardly historical facts regarding ancient curses and witchcraft.

The second on November 23rd has a Christmas theme with Victorian mill owner Dusty struggling to pay the rent.

EATING OUT The Harbour Inn T HIS has been a milestone year for Sue Steward and Mark Oldfield, owners of Lyme’s popular seafront bar and restaurant The Harbour Inn, just a stone’s throw from the beach.

The have celebrated 15 years at The Harbour with another hectic summer season coming to an end, and are now turning their thoughts to the run-up to Christmas.

Before acquiring The Harbour, after moving to the West Country from Derbyshire in the 1990s, Sue bought the Honiton Wine Bar, which was run by son Mark, as well as taking over The Awliscombe Inn. The Harbour was a pretty tired seaside pub when they took over in 2004 and, over the years, they have extended the premises, adding a restaurant, maximising the attractive veranda and securing a sitting out area on the beach which is just a few steps from the bar.

Sue and Mark soon recognised that their position so close to the sea was their greatest asset and set about building their restaurant trade, gaining a reputation over the years for good quality cuisine at rea-

sonable prices, using local ingredients, especially fresh fish right off the harbour trawlers.

That reputation is still as strong today ,despite the increase in competition from new food outlets in Lyme in recent years.

Before the season got underway, Sue and her staff gave Lyme’s most popular seafront restaurant and bar a refreshed look. Adding a very special touch, the bar and restaurant walls are adorned with an array of spectacular mixed media works and paintings by Sue’s artist daughter, Julie Oldfield.

“We are really grateful for the support we have received from the people of Lyme and we look forward to serving them and our visitors for many years to come.”

Sue paid tribute to her staff, more than 30 of whom are employed during the season, and also the creativity and skill of her chefs, led by Darrol Moss.

The popularity of The Harbour is reflected in their traditional Christmas Day lunch being sold out with 80 diners already booked.
