Council to spend £21K on keeping seafront clean

LYME Regis Town Council has agreed to spend up to £21,000 of unplanned expenditure in preparation for an expected influx of visitors when lockdown restrictions are eased. The money will be spent on additonal cleaning and an attendant at the Marine Parade toilets, and overtime for council staff to pick up seafront litter, following problems which were seen last year during a busy late spring and summer. The restaurant in Mill Lane has decorated its windows with positive news stories that you may have missed or forgotten from past year during the coronavirus pandemic, including many stories which have featured on the LymeOnline website and in our newspaper.

Planning for the future

LYME Regis’ famous fossil hunter Mary Anning is to be celebrated with a new commemorative 50p coin collection. The Royal Mint has released three 50p coins depicting three Jurassic creatures, which can be purchased in a selection of gold proof, silver proof or coloured, ranging in price from £10 to £1,100. Jazz Jurassica is on!

JAZZ Jurassica, the four-day jazz and blues festival in Lyme Regis, will go ahead at the end of May say organisers. After a year in lockdown, the festival will kick off this year’s event season with an upbeat programme of live music. REPORT, PAGE 11

TOWN COUNCIL SETS OUT OBJECTIVES FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS LYME Regis Town Council has set out its objectives for the next five years, following what has been a hugely challenging 12 months.

With the coronavirus pandemic costing the council an unexpected £350,000 fall in income, and the £650,000 cost of essential work to resurface the flat roof area above Marine Parade businesses, there were concerns earlier in the year about the impact on the council’s reserves. But the authority has nearly reached the end of

francesca@lyme-online.co.uk the financial year in a relatively healthy position, and is now looking ahead, releasing a Corporate Plan for 2021-2026. In his foreward to the plan, the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Brian Larcombe MBE, says the council still managed to deliver many of its plans and commitments during 2020, despite the pandemic. These included improving Langmoor Gardens,

installing new beach huts and benches on the seafront, improving Henry’s Way play park and supporting several local organisations with grants. Looking ahead, the council outlines its objectives for the next five years, split into three priority lists. Major projects include refurbishing the council offices, replacing the seafront railings and improvements to the old Cadet Hut behind Anning Road, now used as the council’s outside workforce’s base.
