LYFE Kitchen to move HQ to Memphis, open 2 restaurants by Ryan Poe Aug 13, 2014, 11:10am CDT rpoe@bizjournals.com LYFE Kitchen, one of the hottest startup restaurant chains in the country, will move its headquarters to Memphis and open two locations, including one in the Chisca Hotel. The move follows Memphis-based restaurant operator and developer Carlisle Corp.'s large but undisclosed investment in the Palo Alto, California-based chain, which currently has 10 health-conscious, fast-casual, high-quality locations. LYFE's board approved Carlisle Corp. as a minority shareholder in May – an agreement that includes making Chance Carlisle, who is already president of Carlisle Corp.'s Wendy's operator Wendelta Inc., LYFE's new chief executive officer. Wendelta operates 77 Wendy's restaurants in the Southeast. The relocation of LYFE will have lasting benefits for Memphis, including a "significant" number of hires in the long-term, Carlisle said. Some of LYFE's personnel will be given the opportunity to move to Memphis, but the final decision won't be made for 60 to 90 days. One of the more immediate benefits to Memphis will be the opening of two new LYFE Kitchens in 2015: One in the former 6,300-square-foot Sharky's Gulf Grill at 6201 Poplar Ave. in the first quarter, and the other in a roughly 4,000-square-foot space in the Chisca in the third quarter. Each LYFE location employs about 40-60 people, on average. The investment is another big move for Carlisle Corp., which, in addition to recently purchasing the former Sharky's, is on the team redeveloping the Chisca and is still weighing a restart of its large mixed-use development One Beale in Downtown Memphis.

"We want our investments, from the Chisca to One Beale to LYFE, to fit in a box we're passionate about, that makes a difference for our community," Carlisle said. LYFE – which stands for Love Your Food Everyday – was founded in 2010 by Mike Roberts, CEO of restaurants; Stephen Sidwell, CEO of retail; and Mike Donahue, chief communications officer. Roberts will become chairman of the board. The chain has built a lifestyle brand with a heavy emphasis on socially responsible practices such as using locally sourced food with no artificial ingredients since opening its first location in Palo Alto in October 2011, Donahue said. "We agreed that there would be no compromises on our standards," he said. The average cost of LYFE Kitchen's dishes runs from $4 to $14, and all are under 600 calories and 1,000 milligrams of sodium. Also, the restaurants serve only locally produced beer, in addition to their wine and sometimes liquor menus. "What LYFE is doing is basically redefining the simple principle that good-for-you food has to taste horrible," Carlisle said. "Not only will it work here – it'll thrive here and convince some naysayers that this isn't a West Coast concept that won't work in the South." LYFE expects to grow its 10 locations to 14 or 15 by the end of the year, Carlisle said. And next year, the chain – with backing from Carlisle Corp. – will open 15 to 20 locations, including one in Nashville. Ryan Poe covers commercial real estate; transportation and logistics; construction; and Downtown Memphis. Contact him at rpoe@bizjournals.com.

LYFE Kitchen Kicks Off Spring with Flavorful Fare that Proves Nutritious Food Can be Fun, Too Executive Chefs Art Smith, Tal Ronnen and Jeremy Bringardner Continue to Create Recipes That Break Conventions When It Comes to Making Delicious, Good For You Food

New Menu Items Summed Up in One Word: LYFE-alicious April 2, 2014 – Buffalo Chicken Strips. Baked Garlic Parmesan Sweet Potato Fries. Pizzadillawich. These indulgent sounding dishes that would make any mouth water are now just as good for you as they are delicious, thanks to LYFE Kitchen. The unique lifestyle restaurant, launched in 2012, continues to fuel the “good food movement” one bite at a time with innovative and unexpected fresh food combinations that provide people with a food experience they can feel great about. “The LYFE Kitchen mission is to ensure you Love Your Food Everyday, so we are constantly challenging ourselves to create dishes that get people excited about eating well,” said Art Smith, Executive Chef of LYFE Kitchen. “This spring we are introducing some traditionally indulgent items that meet our taste and wellness standards for flavor, ingredient and nutrient content.” Among the new menu items patrons will see as of April 2ND in LYFE Kitchen’s Chicago and three California restaurants are: • • •

Pizzadillawich (a stuffed pizza-like sandwich with melted cheese, fresh roasted vegetables and fresh basil, served alongside hot tomato sauce for dipping, and shhh, it’s gluten free), Baked Garlic Parmesan Sweet Potato Fries (served with a spicy chipotle aioli and topped with freshly grated parmesan, freshly chopped garlic and fresh herbs ala “Truffle Fries”), Buffalo Chicken Wrap (featuring four super foods including avocado, black beans, Greek yogurt and kale, wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla),

Quinoa Crunch Bowl (protein-rich, plant-based dish with quinoa, black rice, hummus, avocado, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and broccoli, drizzled with spicy fireman’s hot sauce and chipotle vinaigrette).

*For full nutrition content visit www.lyfekitchen.com

Chef Jeremy Bringardner, LYFE Kitchen’s Executive Corporate Chef, says the new items are a continuation of the restaurant’s philosophy that eating well doesn’t mean having to compromise on flavor or fun. “I would be at a friend’s house or at a wine bar seeing people enjoy “bar type” foods and say to myself ‘we can make that type of fun fare delicious AND good for you,’ ” said Bringardner. “For example, we use fresh ingredients; we bake, not fry, our foods; we like to use an array of super foods and we offer many that are plant based and gluten free. And, of course, they all taste great.” Bringardner adds that as LYFE Kitchen expands its restaurants in Chicagoland, as well as opening new locations this year in Colorado, Nevada, New York and Texas, he and his chef team are always thinking out of the box to make each restaurant a unique experience – like vertical farming to bring more local ingredients to urban areas. LYFE-alicious Cool Beverage Offerings: Of course, no meal is complete without a beverage, and at LYFE Kitchen what people drink is as important as what they eat. The spring menu also includes new, cool, refreshing beverages that complement menu items for breakfast, lunch and dinner including the Mango Cucumber Lime Smoothie (frozen chunks of mango and cucumber blended with organic apple juice, fresh raw ginger and fresh squeezed lime juice), the Banilla Shake (made with frozen bananas and Madagascar vanilla and sweetened with house-made date syrup), and the Ginger Pomegranate Lemonade (high antioxidant drink made from raw ginger, pure pomegranate juice and fresh squeezed lemon juice). About LYFE Kitchen LYFE Kitchen is committed to the idea that great-tasting food can also be good for you, affordable and convenient. COMING SOON TO A MILE-HIGH CITY NEAR YOU: LYFE KITCHEN RESTAURANT New Owner-Operators Join the LYFE Kitchen Family to Bring Great Tasting, Good-for-You Concept to Denver DENVER, FEBRUARY 28, 2014 - LYFE Kitchen Restaurant, the fast-growing lifestyle brand, is adding to its roster of LYFERS: new owner-operators who are joining the LYFE Kitchen family to bring the message of Eat Good. Feel Good. Do Good. to communities across the country. After opening the first LYFE Kitchen franchise in Chicago last November, the restaurant group today welcomed Rachel and DJ Mitchell of Denver as new LYFE Kitchen owner-operators. Rachel and DJ Mitchell literally grew up in the hospitality industry, working with Rachel’s restaurant-owning parents in various capacities throughout the greater Denver-area. What started out as professional curiosity about the LYFE Kitchen concept of great-tasting, goodfor-you food, sustainably sourced and carefully prepared soon evolved into a new venture and the chance to start their own legacy. TASTING IS BELIEVING “Every time we discovered something new about LYFE Kitchen, the more we were intrigued,” explains Rachel. “The management team is led by Mike Roberts and Mike Donahue, two men who know something about creating and growing restaurant brands. Chefs Art Smith, Tal Ronnen and Jeremy Bringardner consult on the menu. It sounds simple, but you need restaurant people to build a restaurant business.”

It was a visit to the LYFE Kitchen location in Palo Alto; to see the flagship restaurant and taste the food that made the final difference. “From the first bite, everything changed. We knew then that we had to be a part of the LYFE Kitchen story,” said Rachel. As a working mom, Rachel understands the challenges of balancing taste and nutrition for her family and herself. Recently, she had been advised by her doctors to modify her diet. Yet, like many Americans, she didn’t quite know where to begin or how to make changes. That first visit to LYFE Kitchen introduced her to the ingredients that she wanted to eat, and inspired her with new ideas and preparations.

The Quinoa Crunch Wrap is one of the top-selling sandwiches items at LYFE Kitchen Restaurant.

“Like many people, I thought that good-for-you food would mean sacrificing taste or satisfying portions. Then I discovered the wonders of quinoa. It’s delicious. This is the kind of food that I want to enjoy and my friends want to enjoy, every day. I’m proud to bring LYFE Kitchen to my hometown,” she explains. “We couldn’t ask for two better representatives of the LYFE Kitchen brand than Rachel and DJ,” said Mike Roberts, co-founder and CEO of LYFE Kitchen Restaurant. “I know that they take pride in working alongside their employees and serving customers every day. They know how to run a successful business and they know how to serve customers and the community. We can’t wait for them to bring our message and our mission to Denver and beyond.” DENVER AND LYFE: A MILE HIGH MATCH “Denver is going to love the LYFE Kitchen story,” predicts DJ Mitchell. “From locally sourced products to our sustainability standards and practices to our commitment to the local community, this concept is tailor made to the lifestyle and sensibilities of the region.” For the past two years, Denver has ranked fourth on the list of most sustainable U.S. cities as compiled by Our Green Cities, a Massachusetts-based national sustainability advocacy group. The city, its leaders and residents, have undertaken numerous initiatives to make Denver greener and more sustainable, from recycling programs, water conservation and emission reductions. In 2013, Denver ranked fifth overall among America’s fittest cities according to the American College of Sports Medicine, American Fitness Index ™ (AFI). Among the factors highlighted in Denver’s ranking were the percentage of physically active people, access to a number of outdoor activities and the plethora of farmers markets in the Denver-area. The iconic LYFE Kitchen herb wall greets guests at LYFE Kitchen Culver City and will be a fixture in LYFE Kitchen Denver. The living wall contains more than 25 fresh herbs used in LYFE Kitchen dishes.

“We love to spend time outdoors and we love to recharge with great, fresh, delicious food,” explains DJ Mitchell. “Rachel and I can’t wait to bring LYFE Kitchen to Denver and the surrounding communities. We know that our friends and neighbors are going to appreciate that there is something for everyone at LYFE Kitchen and that every dish is prepared in such a way that you really can love your food, everyday.” Denver represents the second franchise market for LYFE Kitchen restaurant. The company has three award-winning company-owned restaurants already in operation in Palo Alto, Culver City Calif., and Tarzana, California. The first franchise-owned and operated restaurant opened at Clark and Hubbard Streets in Chicago’s River North section in mid-November. The Mitchells have secured their first LYFE Kitchen location in the Denver area at the Park Meadows Mall at 8401 Park Meadows Center Drive, Suite 2805, Lone Tree, Colorado, with the goal of opening their first LYFE Kitchen Restaurant by late Spring 2014. LYFE Kitchen is committed to the idea that great-tasting food can also be good for you, affordable and convenient. WORLD’S FIRST WELL™ CERTIFIED RESTAURANTS INTRODUCED BY DELOS®, THE PIONEER OF WELLNESS REAL ESTATE™ AND LYFE KITCHEN LYFE Kitchen Debuts Tarzana, CA and Chicago, IL Restaurants with Delos’ Innovative Wellness Designs and Plans to Incorporate the WELL Building Standard in All LYFE Kitchen Restaurants New York, NY and Chicago, IL (December 3, 2013) – The world’s first WELL™ Certified restaurants were unveiled today by Delos®, the pioneer of Wellness Real Estate™, and LYFE Kitchen Restaurant, the emerging lifestyle brand. The new LYFE Kitchen Restaurants in Tarzana, CA and Chicago, IL are now certified under the WELL™ Building Standard pilot program. Both were built to offer guests and employees a brand new dining and working environment that supports holistic wellness – from floor to ceiling, dining room to kitchen and all places in between. LYFE Kitchen’s new Tarzana and Chicago restaurants represent the company’s third and fourth locations and the first two restaurants in the world to implement Delos’ innovative wellness designs and features. As part of its mission to deliver a complete lifestyle experience for guests to Eat Good Feel Good and Do Good, LYFE Kitchen plans to WELL Certify all new restaurants moving forward, which includes a pipeline of 250 new restaurants over the next five years. Sustainability has become an important consideration for businesses of all types. In June 2012, the U.S. Green Building Council reported that more than 2 billion square feet of building space in the United States was LEED-certified. By pursuing the Delos WELL Certification Standard, in addition to LEED certification, LYFE Kitchen is taking sustainability one step further. Wellness thought-leader Dr. Deepak Chopra hails LYFE Kitchen’s move as a milestone in making WELL Certified designs a new standard: “I commend the efforts of Delos and LYFE Kitchen to create a dining environment that promotes emotional and physical wellness,” notes Dr. Deepak Chopra. “The plans to open 250 WELL Certified LYFE restaurants in the next five years will provide a great platform for Delos to introduce its transformative wellness designs on a larger scale.”

The new LYFE Kitchen locations in Tarzana, CA and Chicago, IL incorporate Delos’ state-of-theart designs and evidence-based wellness features, such as advanced air purification, water filtration systems, innovative lighting strategies, healthy entrances with dirt and virus track-in controls and anti-microbial coatings on common restaurant touch points. “LYFE Kitchen and Delos share a common goal to improve the total well-being of individuals, so we welcomed this collaboration with Delos to pursue the WELL Building Standard,” said Mike Roberts, CEO of LYFE Kitchen. “Delos’ groundbreaking wellness designs allow us to provide a better environment and healthier lifestyle for both LYFE Kitchen diners and employees. While many guests who walk through the door won’t realize that these improvements and standards were made on their behalf, we know we are doing the right thing simply because it is in the best interests of our customers, the environment and consumers everywhere.”

Establishing a new benchmark for the foodservices industry, the first WELL Certified LYFE Kitchen restaurants feature more than a dozen groundbreaking health and wellness features: 1. WELLShield™: photo-catalytic coating on common touch points such as tables, countertops and doors breaks down bacteria, viruses and VOCs on bacteria-susceptible surfaces to prevent the spreading of germs and bacteria within the restaurant. 2. Advanced Air Filtration: the most advanced HEPA-standard air purification system reduces allergens, toxins and pathogens, creating better air quality and breathing. 3. Advanced Water Purification: reduces disinfectant byproducts, chlorine, pesticides and some pharmaceutical and personal care products for the cleanest, most purified tap and sink water.

4. Advanced Lighting: helps to minimize disruption of the body’s circadian system, enhance productivity and provide appropriate visual acuity to diners and employees through an advanced lighting system that contains controllable and dimmable LED lighting fixtures, along with light and occupancy sensors. 5. Non-Pourous Countertops: nonporous surfaces prevent the collection of food particles that encourage bacteria growth. 6. Non-Pourous Cutting Boards: prevents the collection of food particles that encourage bacteria growth. 7. Separate Cutting Boards for meat, fish and vegetables: prevents cross-contamination and the spreading of illness-causing bacteria. 8. Herbarium: enhances air quality and a more natural setting. 9. Dietary Info on Display: provides nutrition awareness and promotes healthy eating habits. 10. Cleaning Protocol: specialized chemical-free cleaning supplies and techniques for cleaning protocols including vacuuming, mopping, dusting and ventilation cleaning. 11. EMF Shielding: protects against electrical equipment and wiring that emanates disruptive EMFs. 12. Healthy Entrance: specialized entrance and doors with dirt track-in mats and areas that reduce unwanted chemicals, biological contaminants and other air quality hazards from entering the restaurant (not pictured). “It is a real testament to LYFE Kitchen and its leadership that the organization is going to this length to create a well-focused environment for guests and employees alike,” noted Tarzanaresident, Dr. Armand Dorian, Emergency Room physician and LYFE Kitchen Wellness Advisor. “There is more and more interesting research being done on how our environment and surroundings impact us physically, as well as mentally and emotionally. Guests at LYFE Kitchen know that the food is going to be delicious and nourishing. Now they know the actual environment will be beneficial as well. That’s something to be excited about.” “The opening of the WELL Certified LYFE Kitchen restaurant represents an exciting new avenue for Delos to introduce our evidence-based wellness designs in the restaurant and food industry segment,” said Delos Founder Paul Scialla. “Our plans to implement the WELL Building Standard in LYFE’s next 250 restaurants around the nation mark a significant step forward in furthering Delos’ mission to improve the way people live and enhance their quality of life through the built environment.” A result of six years of research, development and collaboration with a board of researchers and doctors from Columbia University Medical School, as well as with architects, engineers and contractors, Delos’ WELL Building Standard is the first building standard focused exclusively on enhancing people’s health and well-being. Until now, Delos has worked in the residential, office and hospitality sectors, completing its first commissioned loft space in Manhattan in 2011 and introducing 42 Stay Well™ hotel rooms at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in 2012. In fall 2013, Delos completed the world’s-first office space certified under the WELL Building Standard pilot program at CBRE’s new global headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, CA. Most recently, Delos announced Leonardo DiCaprio as a board member and an early investor in the company. LOVE YOUR FOOD EVERYDAY, TARZANA LYFE Kitchen Brings Eat Good, Feel Good, Do Good Philosophy To New Location Sprouting in SoCal TARZANA (July 24, 2013) – LYFE begins in Tarzana this afternoon as community leaders and a team of LYFERS gathered to cut a ribbon of Brussels sprouts to mark a new LYFE Kitchen restaurant opening in Southern California. The Sprout Cutting underscores LYFE’s mission to deliver both taste and sustainability in dishes that deliver on the message “Eat Good. Feel Good. Do Good.” LYFE CEO Mike Roberts, local Tarzana resident and LYFE Kitchen ambassador Dr. Armand Dorian and LYFE Vegan Consulting Chef Tal Ronnen, recently named one of The Hollywood Reporter’s 20 Most Influential Chefs in Hollywood, gladly cut the ribbon of fresh produce to mark the start of construction. LYFE Kitchen President and CEO Mike Roberts says it was the success of LYFE’s Culver City location that made expanding to Tarzana possible. “Because of customer response to our Culver City menu and location, LYFE is quickly expanding,” he said. “We’re happy to serve the people of SoCal in more ways and places.” More locations are on tap for Southern California over the next 24 months, including new restaurants in West Hollywood and Playa Vista. LYFE’s expansion into Tarzana brings happiness and great-tasting, good-for-you food to a new neighborhood, which pleases Tarzana native, emergency physician and LYFE Ambassador Dr. Armand Dorian. “I’m excited to see LYFE come to the community I’ve lived in for many years,” he said. “I see the importance of food’s role in our lives every day, and I’m sure LYFE Kitchen will help my Tarzana neighbors choose what’s best for them.” The LYFE Kitchen message of “Eat Good” is brought to life through inspired dishes created by Executive Chefs Art Smith and Tal Ronnen. LYFE’s menu also delivers multiple options for a variety of personal food policies, including paleo, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan. Each dish contains fewer than 600 calories and 1000 mg of sodium (most include much less). The

message of “Do Good” is achieved through numerous philanthropic endeavors and a commitment to purchasing local produce. The menu includes Brussels sprouts from Weiser Family Farms, luscious berries from Thorne Family Farm, delicious organic greens from Kenter Canyon Farms, grass-fed beef from Hearst Ranch and biodynamic wine on tap from Beckmen vineyards in Santa Barbara County. LYFE restaurants also commit themselves to the message of “Feel Good” with inviting designs and furniture made from sustainable and recycled materials, including salvaged wood. LYFE Tarzana is also targeting a Platinum rating under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Green Building Rating System™. LYFE’s message and new location has Diana Williams, CEO of the Woodland Hills-Tarzana Chamber of Commerce, eager to welcome this new, important asset to the community. “Lifestyle is so important to the Tarzana community and LYFE Kitchen will certainly be an important addition,” said Ms. Williams. “We welcome LYFE Kitchen to the community and look forward to working with them on business and charitable opportunities in the future.” About LYFE Kitchen LYFE Kitchen is committed to the idea that great-tasting food can also be good for you, affordable and convenient. With choices to please anyone, from flexitarian to vegetarian, omnivore to vegan, our celebrated chefs have developed a menu that is as delicious as it is inspiring. LYFE KITCHEN RESTAURANT GROWS IN SO-CAL… …with an emphasis on “local” CULVER CITY, CALIF. (March 8, 2013)— At the second LYFE Kitchen grand opening celebration on Friday, March 8, 2013, CEO Mike Roberts announced aggressive Southern California growth plans. In addition to the Culver City restaurant opening, the transformational “lyfestyle” brand will be opening restaurants this year in Tarzana and West Hollywood, with several additional locations in the pipeline. Roberts also announced to more than 100 new LYFE Kitchen restaurant employees and event guests -including community leaders, ambassadors, shareholders and charitable partner, Culver City Education Foundation- that LYFE Kitchen’s first franchise agreement will be with Carey Cooper, who will expand the concept in Chicago, Ill. The brand is actively seeking additional corporate locations in Northern California and outstanding locations and talented franchisees nationwide, with a focus on Denver, New York City, Austin, Boston and Washington D.C. “We look forward to strengthening our roots here in Southern California and expanding to new regions,” said Roberts. “From the moment each location is selected until well after the first fork is raised, LYFE immerses itself in the local community and establishes strong relationships with suppliers, local community leaders, and charitable groups.” FROM FARM-TO-FORK LYFE Kitchen’s local growers and vendors assist in providing customers with greattasting, fresh, high-quality food, while mitigating the overall environmental footprint. Following the grand opening event, LYFE Kitchen donated remaining produce to local charity, Chefs to End Hunger. The menu includes Brussels sprouts from Weiser Family Farms, luscious berries from Thorne Family Farm, delicious organic greens from Kenter Canyon Farms, grass fed beef from Hearst Ranch and biodynamic wine on tap from Beckmen vineyards in Santa Barbara.

our wine PROGRAM Our wines come from vineyards and wineries that are committed to sustainable practices. To further our commitment to providing one of America’s most environmentally friendly programs, our wine comes in five gallon, re-usable canisters which hold the equivalent of 26 bottles of wine. Each canister eliminates the carbon footprint of 26: bottles, corks, foils, wraps, label sets and shipping cartons. The blend of inert gasses in the system keeps every glass served as fresh as the first, similar to beer in a keg.

OUR LYFE STORY WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING: “This artfully arranged plate…of “unfried chicken, veggies tossed with parsley and chives, all sprinkled with dried cranberries—was something else. It was the future.”

EAT GOOD

- Frederick Kaufman, WIRED

“My hope is that LYFE will…be successful enough that they have a real impact on the way we think of fast food.” -Mark Bittman, food columnist, New York Times DO GOOD

LYFE is WELL Certified: LYFE Kitchen is the first restaurant chain in the world to have restaurants certified by the International WELL Building Institute. Like LEED certification, which celebrates buildings that use sustainable materials, WELL certification is given to buildings that keep their guests healthy, using things like advanced air/water filtration, anti-microbial coatings on most-touched surfaces, and healthy menus. LYFE Chicago has all three, earning it WELL certification and a nod from wellness guru Dr. Deepak Chopra, a WELL Certified Ambassador. FEEL GOOD

“I hope they open a thousand LYFE Kitchens.” -Deepak Chopra, MD
