Charles A. Bigelow Charles A. Bigelow (born July 29, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American type historian, professor, and designer. Bigelow grew up in the Detroit suburbs and attended the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1982, the Frederic W. Goudy Award in 1987, Sloan Science and Film screenwriting awards in 2001 and 2002, and other honors.

Along with Kris Holmes, he is the co-creator of Lucida and Wingdings font families. He is a principal of the Bigelow and Holmes studio.

Kris Holmes (born 1950, Reedley, California) is a typeface designer, a calligrapher, type design educator and an animator. She, with Charles Bigelow, is the co-creator of the Lucida font family. She is President of Bigelow & Holmes Inc., a typeface design studio.

Lucida Sans is the sans serif complement to Lucida, designed by Kris Holmes and Charles Bigelow in 1985. It is created as both designers wanted to create a font family that gave nice output on laser printers and displays.

GENEROUS SPACING

The x-height of Lucida Sans is very large, approximately 53% of the body size. Lucida’s large x-height help it adapt to reading on screens and printing on modest resolution devices.

Lucida Sans have more space between letters than most modern types. The generous spacing improves legibility at text sizes (8 point to 14 point) at low resolutions on screens and printers.

CHARACTERISTIC DISTILLED LETTER Lucida Sans have forms and thick-thin proportions derived from pen-written letter shapes written and read in the 15th century by Italian Humanists.
