The case study of The Cosmos House was chosen for analysis and development of a 3D model and 2D drawings showcasing both interior and exterior design. The goal was to explore space, form, lighting, materials, site, and context in an urban setting. This project required interactions and observation of peers assigned to dif ferent case studies and skill sets.

The C_ABE Cabin Competition was a continuation of skills learned in Exploring Small Space. A new case s t u d y, C l e a r Ro ck R a n ch , wa s chosen for analysis and development into two and threedimensional graphics. These graphics were arranged on a digital board to ef fectively communicate design ideas of a small rural cabin located in a state park within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The final board was critiqued by a group of jurors and judged based on the interaction between space, environment, site, and inhabitation.

In this project, the goal was to preserve a piece of literature, known as the “codex,” while celebrating its context whether it be for the author or the community for which the piece was written. An additional challenge was to integrate this design with the neighboring shelters that were designed by peers. The codex assigned was The Philadephia Negro by W.E.B. Du Bois which inspired a row home-esque design to acknowledge the ef for ts of Du Bois as he went stoop-to-stoop along the 7th ward of Philadelphia identifying social problems present in the African American community during the late 1800s.

The Community Research project presented itself as a star ting point for later projects of Design 3. The goal was to gain a deeper understanding of the personally unknown neighborhood of Sharswood, Pennsylvania and its rich historical roots. This research was a collaborative project which involved all peers to work together to show extensive knowledge of the area and its context through mapping and diagramming.

S p e c i f i c a l l y, I c h o s e to m a p t h e area’s race demographics by experimenting with an abstract 2D representation and a suspended projection.

The information from the Community Research project was used to create a connection between the community and its residences. A group of clients with various backgrounds were selected as a par t of a client-based approach to design.

This assignment was to create a double-row home customized for two clients and their families. The success of the design depended upon creating an experiential collage that identified the wants and needs of each client and the manner in which the clients interact within their community.
