Fangoria magazine analysis

Page 1

The main cover image shows the creature from ‘Martyrs’. It is in the centre of the page and is a stereotypical cover photo as the creature is looking directly into the eyes of the audience making the image look even more intimidating than it already is. The background behind the image is blurred so it doesn’t reveal much about the setting of the film, just that the creature is most likely the creature the film is named after. It does however show that it is set at night with the use of the dark background connoting the evil/scary aspect of the film. The image of the scarred character shows how brutal the film will be, which should appeal to gory horror fans, as they are the main target audience of Fangoria. The title of the magazine itself shows its target audience as it is made up of the words ‘Fan’ and ‘Gore’.

The masthead is in a certain font that makes the writing look pointy to connote the fangs of a vampire and it also has a 3D effect to make it stand out. The red colouring also clearly connotes the horror theme. The fangs could also be pointing to the main cover line to draw the audience’s attention to it. The strapline above the masthead explains what the magazine will consist of and how it will be worse than it normally might be. The issue number is to the left of the masthead and the date to the right.

The left and right justified headings all use the same broken down font for the subheadings, which with most of them seem to be the taglines of the films. All the headings emphasise sex or violence which shows that this magazine is clearly aimed at horror fans over the age of 18. The ‘Watchmen FX’ and ‘Bad Biology’ fonts are from their movie posters, acting as both advertising for the films but also being recognisable for fans of these films.

The main cover line shows the name of the film in bold capital letters to make it stand out against the background. The line above in red asks the audience a direct question by using second-person pronouns (you) and uses a horror theme phrase (guts). The red writing also connotes the horror theme, while the broken down font indicates grittiness.
