30 Days of Night poster analysis

The speckled effect on the red makes it look like splattered blood but has an artistic look behind it which makes the impact of the image more abstract and less directly scary to the audience. This would help the film broaden its mainstream appeal.

The dark shadows shown in the air above the main characters show the evil creatures and suggests how out-numbered the humans are. The red strips hanging down may also depict the fangs of the vampires.

There is an evil creature in the background which foreshadows impending doom. It also gives the audience an insight into the creatures that are haunting them and as they are in human form it typically suggests zombies or vampires. As the film is set at night, vampires are the main suggestion. Black and white connotes darkness and fear. This is shown in the faces of the characters and the fact that there is a creature in the background. It might also connote isolation as the characters seem trapped and illprepared. The billing block helps sell the main stars of the film.

The snow in the background shows the diegesis of the film as the location will be in a cold, winter land. Also the costumes of the main characters (fur/woolly hat) indicate the cold conditions. This mixed with the title of the film stating that it will be at ‘night’ gives the audience a clue to the type of creatures that they will see.

Red connotes danger and as it is surrounding the black and white image it suggests that danger is over-powering the humans. The splattered effect at the bottom again looks like blood showing that a lot of people are going to die.

The use of a scratchy font for the title suggests that evil creatures and gritty violence will be shown. ‘Night’ is also made bolder to emphasise the darkness and evil that will be focused on in the film.

The female character looks tough even though she has blonde hair which usually means she will be a victim. She looks braver than the man (who is nervously looking to one side) which again suggests that she is the strongest one and that there may be a feminist theme to the film.
