Leadership QUIN GRESHAM

Producing Artistic Director 2016 marks Mr. Gresham’s twelfth season in Arrow Rock and the 100th show produced during his tenure. During the 2015 season, Mr. Gresham directed Stand By Your Man and his adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Past directing credits at The Lyceum include Around the World in 80 Days, Cotton Patch Gospel, Love Letters (starring Tab Hunter and Joyce DeWitt), The Wizard of Oz, The Music Man, Camelot, To Kill A Mockingbird, Run For Your Wife, The Fantasticks, The Producers, Hairspray, Sleuth, West Side Story, Little Women the Musical, Into the Woods, Misery, 1776, Tuesdays with Morrie, Dracula, Peter Pan and Driving Miss Daisy. Also an actor, Quin has been a frequent Company member at the Lyceum since 1999. Having appeared in more than 50 productions at The Lyceum, Quin’s favorites include Boolie in Driving Miss Daisy, James Leeds in Children of a Lesser God, Dr. Sanderson in Harvey, Felix Ungar in Oscar and Felix, A New Look at the Odd Couple, Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, Tom in The Glass Menagerie, Arles etc. in Greater Tuna, A Tuna Christmas, Red, White and Tuna, and Tuna Does Vegas, David in The Foreigner, Matthew in Cotton Patch Gospel, Max in Lend Me a Tenor, Sydney in God’s Favorite, Ernst in Cabaret, the Tinman in The Wizard of Oz, Sam in Shenandoah, and Bernard in Death of a Salesman. Quin’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at his alma mater, Webster University, was named the 2010 Best Musical in St. Louis by The Riverfront Times.Quin’s work has also been seen at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Totem Pole Playhouse, The Riverside Theatre, The National Arts Club, Stephens College, Providence College, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre and The Texas Shakespeare Festival. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for L.E.A.D. Institute, a non-profit organization committed to providing services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the state of Missouri. Like his two predecessors, Quin is a proud graduate of the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University.

STEVE BERTANI Managing Director Mr. Bertani is in his eleventh season as Managing Director. Prior to coming to Arrow Rock in 2006 from St. Louis, Steve was a Division Manager for Citigroup’s Primerica Financial Services earning much recognition for team leadership and client development. He spent 12 seasons at Stages St. Louis theatre company (1991-2003), ending his tenure as General Manager. Steve has experienced all aspects of the theatre business from front of house operations to backstage, and has appeared onstage at the Mule Barn Theatre and Post Playhouse in productions of Working, The Nerd, Dracula, A Day in Hollywood - A Night in the Ukraine and Gypsy. He made his Lyceum Theatre stage debut in the 2007 production of The Sunshine Boys followed by cameo appearances in You Can’t Take It With You, and The Man Who Came To Dinner. Having been a drummer for over 30 years, Steve played one of the Bodacious Bobcats in Always…Patsy Cline, the role of Jerry Allison (one of The Crickets) in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, and in 2014 played drums for Little Shop of Horrors.

A few of his favorite Lyceum productions include 1776, Tuesdays With Morrie, Into the Woods, Cats, Proof, Arsenic and Old Lace, On Golden Pond, The Diary of Anne Frank, Run For Your Wife, Buddy…The Buddy Holly Story, To Kill A Mockingbird, A Tuna Christmas, Rumors, and the Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Steve worked as a stage manager for numerous pop artist concerts in St. Louis, including C & C Music Factory, Michael Damian, Donny Osmond, and Belinda Carlyle. Steve currently serves as a member on the Experience Arrow Rock Marketing Committee, the Saline County League of Emergency Planning Commission, and a district chief with the Saline County Fire Protection District. He is a graduate of Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO. Steve and his wife Elizabeth live Saline County along with her children Noah (12) and Lauren (10). He thanks each of you for making every year possible at The Lyceum.

About The Lyceum

If Walls Could

What a story they would tell!

More than half a century ago, an amazingly committed group of dreamers set out to create the unlikely theatre that we continue to enjoy today. And what a dream! In 1961, Arrow Rock lacked its current picturesque environs. According to Founding Artistic Director, Henry Swanson, “The town was essentially in the last stages of decay and disrepair...” The Lyceum’s first home was in an abandoned church dating back to the 1870s, the lobby through which you entered into the theatre today. With the hope of keeping it from being torn down and salvaged for lumber, two Arrow Rock couples, the Lawrences and the Argubrights, purchased the church and began

thinking about starting a theatre.

Swanson, a professor at Christian College in Columbia was engaged as the theatre’s first Artistic Director.

Swanson said, “I have always felt that good plays, well-acted, could draw an audience anywhere so I told them I would take a crack at it.”

Swanson produced the first season for $3,500, $1,800 of which went toward a new roof.

When Mr. Swanson retired from the Theatre in 1979, Michael Bollinger was named the Lyceum’s second Artistic Director. During Mr. Bollinger’s 25 year tenure, he expanded The Lyceum’s reach by introducing 20th century musicals to the repertoire, increasing attendance dramatically.

In 1983, The Lyceum became the first theatre in Missouri to receive an award from the Missouri Arts Council (MAC). By 1990, thanks to increasing attendance and with the help of state income tax credits granted under the Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) and generous supporters, The Lyceum was able to raise several hundred thousand dollars to expand the theatre from 200 seats to the new 408 seat auditorium that you sit in today.

About The Lyceum

2003 - Chicago

In 2004 The Lyceum’s Board of Directors appointed Mr. Philip Coffield, a Lyceum veteran actor, director and 20 year Associate Artistic Director, as the theatre’s third Artistic Director. Mr. Coffield made plans for his first season, cast the shows and hired the many company members, but regrettably, due to mounting health issues, was unable to complete his first season as Artistic Director. Quin Gresham, a fellow Lyceum veteran and recently appointed Associate Artistic Director, stepped in as Artistic Director and went on to produce the 2005 Season. Sadly, Mr. Coffield passed away in early 2006, a loss felt deeply not just at The Lyceum, but throughout the entire theatre community.

At the end of 2005, the Board of Directors asked Mr. Gresham to remain in Arrow Rock as The Lyceum’s fourth Artistic Director.

Quin immediately proposed

changing the theatre’s rotating repertory schedule to a stock season and, with the enthusiastic support of The Lyceum’s Board of Directors, restructured the theatre’s management approach.

In 2006, Steve Bertani joined The Lyceum team as the theatre’s first Managing Director. Together, Mr. Bertani and Mr. Gresham continue to make facility improvements and to increase production quality, attendance, sponsorships and private support. In 2010 The Lyceum celebrated its 50th Season and, to celebrate this anniversary, more than half a million dollars was raised to ensure a good start to our second half century.

 The Lyceum Theatre is a notfor-profit 501(c)(3) organization and is affiliated with Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States, and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, a theatrical labor union.

The Lyceum is considered one of Missouri’s oldest professional theatres and has a Board of Directors representing communities throughout Missouri.

Director’s Notes Oliver!

Charles Dickens’ second novel, Oliver Twist, served as the source for Lionel Bart’s enduring musical, Oliver! In Oliver Twist, Dickens set out to satirize England’s flawed Poor Law of 1834 by creating a sympathetic hero named Oliver who has little chance of making a better life for himself than his meager, brutal existence in a government Workhouse. Dickens was no stranger to hardship himself, enduring the imprisonment of his own father and, subsequently, back-breaking factory work as a young boy. It was at a shoe polish factory that young Dickens met Bob Fagin who would serve as the inspiration for Fagin, Oliver Twists’ scheming principal thief. Bob Fagin was actually kind to young Dickens which may explain the charm Dickens wove into the character of Fagin to accompany his reprehensible actions.

Lionel Bart’s Oliver! opened on Broadway in 1963 and ran for nearly two years. Bart penned the book, music and lyrics making him one of the few Broadway artists to carry out all three responsibilities. A 1968 film version proved wildly successful, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. The musical has had two unsuccessful Broadway revivals, but it enjoys a thriving life in professional and community theaters across the country.

Oliver! shares the expectation that perseverance, fortitude, and kindness will lead to reward. Oliver plaintively asks “where is love” for him. His goodness and determination to find a better life lead him to love. As our world today gets ever less kind, and hatred and intolerance rear their ugly heads once again, the lesson of Oliver Twist is necessary now more than ever. For generosity and love will always trump greed and hate.

The Cast EMILY AFTON (Nancy) Emily couldn’t be happier to do Oliver! again, after playing the Artful Dodger at age 12 (her first show!). Since then, her credits include Broadway: Hair. 1st National Tour: Hair, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, I Love a Piano. Off-Broadway: Standard Time. Regional: Waitress (A.R.T.), Smokey Joe’s Cafe (Stages St. Louis), A Funny Thing...Forum (Goodspeed), Les Misérables (Maine State), Chicago (Mac-Haydn Theatre). BAILEY BLAISE (Old Lady Agnes/Charlotte/Ensemble) Bailey is thrilled to be returning to the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre! She was last seen on the Arrow Rock stage in The Music Man. Previous credits include: Merrily We Roll Along (Meg), 42nd Street (Gladys), Young Frankenstein (Ensemble), and The Countess of Storyville (Sweet Emma Lou). Bailey is currently pursuing a BA in musical theatre at the University of Alabama. BOB BOHON (Bumble The Beadle) Bob lives in Columbia, Missouri. After a distinguished career as a music educator, he has toured as a performer in 41 states and internationally. Bob holds a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri, and has been recognized as an outstanding educator with Columbia Public Schools in 2000 as well as the Hall of Leaders Award in 2011. Bob has been a performer and musical director regionally at the Lyceum Theatre in Arrow Rock, the Maples Repertory Theatre in Macon and the Sandbox Theatre in upstate New York. The Cast JUDI MANN (Mrs. Sowerberry/Mrs. Bedwin) Judi is thrilled to be making her Arrow Rock debut this summer. An award-winning actress and writer, (2014 Critics choice - Best Actress in a comedy), a graduate of A.M.D.A. in New York, Judi briefly appeared Off Broadway, toured the country with Carol Channing in Hello Dolly, and in St. Louis, she has appeared at most of the Equity theaters. Judi has appeared in or voiced numerous television & radio commercials, and films, most recently, a horror feature, The Nameless. She is Mom to three grown kids & married to actor James Anthony. DAKOTA MACKEY-MCGEE (Bet/Ensemble) Dakota is so happy to be returning to the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre for another Missouri summer! She is returning after two winters of playing Belle and Anne in Arrow Rock’s A Christmas Carol. NOLLIE MOORE (Ensemble) Nollie, is director of the Columbia College Music Program has been director of the Jane Froman Singers since 1999. He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from the University of Missouri. Under his leadership, the Singers have established a tradition of successful collaborations with mid-Missouri arts organizations in acclaimed performances. Concert tours have taken members to New York City’s Carnegie Hall; the great cathedrals of Scotland, England, Austria, Ireland, Italy; and concert halls in China. Away from campus, Moore is active as a professional tenor singing regularly with the Missouri Symphony Orchestra, for which he has sung leading roles in Die Fledermaus, La Traviata, Madama Butterfly and Carmen.

He can be seen regularly on the stage of The Lyceum Theater in Arrow Rock, Missouri. His classical solo work includes Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Beethoven’s Mass in C major, Mozart’s Requiem and Verdi’s Requiem. He made is Carnegie Hall debut in 2015 as the featured soloist in A High Lonesome June 18 - June 26, 2016 • Oliver!

His first Lyceum Theatre production was The Music Man in 2012. Since then he has played a flying monkey/munchkin in The Wizard of Oz, Will Rogers Jr. in Will Rogers Follies, and was a Siamese child in The King and I. He has played the role of Young Scrooge in A Christmas Carol in both productions at the Lyceum. Thanks to Quin and Peter for believing in him and casting him in this amazing role!

DON RICHARD (Fagin) Don waited 26 years to come back ‘home’ to Arrow Rock last summer (he was here in 1989 and 2015), and he wasn’t gonna wait that long again! Here at the Rock: Les Misérables, The Will Rogers Follies, South Pacific, Spider’s Web, Mystery of Edwin Drood. On Broadway: original casts of Jane Eyre, Urinetown, and Side Show (revival). HALLIE RIEVES (Old Sally/Ensemble) After a long hiatus from appearing on the Lyceum stage, Hallie is excited to be back as part of the Oliver! ensemble. Hallie was last seen on the Lyceum stage as the Widow Corney in the 2002 Lyceum production of Oliver!. She is now a full time mom to 4 amazing kids and teaches dance and drama part time at Lee Arts Elementary School, teaches dance classes at Dancearts of Columbia and is part of the TRYPS Children’s Theatre faculty.

And now, a little Lyceum trivia: 1) In which show (over the last ten years) did Jeff wear a skin tight black turtleneck while delivering the line, “Yessssssssssss?” 2) Which of his shows lost power during a pivotal moment? 3) What was his very first show at the Lyceum in 2008? Answers: 1) The Producers, Carmen Ghia, with a full breath of air, this line took approximately 20 seconds to deliver. 2) Opening night, Act II, as Arthur dramatically struggled with burning Guinevere at the stake, the lights went down on Camelot… for twenty minutes. 3) Trick question! Actually 2007 was Jeff’s first season at the Lyceum in Sugar as Josephine, while wearing a dress and playing a saxophone. Yes, a bra was involved. Proud member: Actors’ Equity Association. Recently, Sam received a Zoni Award for Best Choreography for his work on Phoenix Theatre’s production of MARY POPPINS, as well as a BroadwayWorld nomination for his choreography in Phoenix Theatre’s CHICAGO. Originally from Helena, MT, Sam relocated to Saint Louis to study musical theatre and dance at Webster Conservatory. Now based out of NYC, Sam continues to train with dance legends at the Verdon Fosse Legacy. His choreography has been seen at Phoenix Theatre, Arrow Rock Lyceum, Little Theatre on the Square, Webster Conservatory, Grandstreet Theatre. Recently, Sam assisted Mark Stuart Dance Theatre on their Broadway Bound Original dance musical STANDARD TIME. As a performer, Sam has been seen in Broadway Bares, the Fire Island Dance Festival, Mark Stuart Dance Theatre (STANDARD TIME), the National Tour of ALL SHOOK UP, Arrow Rock Lyceum, Palace Theatre, Phoenix Theatre, Arizona Broadway Theatre, Little Theatre on the Square, Reperatory Theatre of STL, and a web campaign for Hermes. JONATHAN A. REED (Lighting Director) Jon is excited to be back with the Lyceum family again this season. He is currently the Production Manager for Yale Repertory Theatre and Assistant Professor at the Yale School of Drama Technical Design and Production program. Jon has designed for companies including Riverside Theatre, Orchesis Dance Company, Open Stage Theatre and Pennsylvania Centre Stage.

Jon’s design work on the Lyceum stage includes Fiddler on the Roof, Damn Yankees, Anything Goes, Annie, West Side Story, Aida, Guys & Dolls and Almost Heaven. BFA – Penn State University; MFA – Yale School of Drama.

MOLLY AKIN-MCKINLEY (Costume Designer) Molly is so delighted to be returning to Lyceum’s Costume Shop this season! An alumni of Mizzou, Molly currently attends The University of Alabama to earn her MFA in Theatre: Design and Production. She has worked locally with PACE, CEC, Missouri Contemporary Ballet, and Columbia College. Her work experience includes designing BoeingBoeing, Spider’s Web, Giselle, Beauty and the Beast, The Miracle Worker, Shrek the Musical, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and assisting Equivocation, Twelfth Night, 42nd Street, The Wizard of Oz, Young Frankenstein, Alice in Wonderland, and The Jane Froman Radio Hour. All glory be to God, and all love and thanks to my wonderful husband, my supportive family, and my dear friends for where I am today!

RYAN MATTHEW HALL (Resident Sound Designer) Ryan is excited that he has been able to design at the Lyceum Theatre since 2009, designing upwards of 45 shows.

Originally from St. Louis, he now calls New York City home. He keeps busy working on a wide variety of shows, including: Himself & Nora, The Effect, and Pearl, at Lincoln Center. Some of his New York Designs include: Making Myth, Take It From the Top, Live, Record, Repeat?, Step One, In Theory, and Off the Record. Some of his favorite Kansas City designs include Next Fall, and Ruined at the Unicorn Theatre, Oh, What a Lovely War! at the National World War I Museum, and Frindle would be his favorite composition at the Coterie Theatre. Ryan is a proud member of the Theatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association (TSDCA).

During the rest of the year, he lives in St. Louis where he is a stage manager for the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. He has stage-managed for other theatres such as the New Theatre, Muny Student Theatre in St. Louis and Arkansas Repertory Theatre.

IVAN DARIO CANO (Assistant Stage Manager) Ivan has a Masters in Stage Management from the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Alumnus of The Juilliard School’s Professional Intern Program. Recent credits include Pinedale Community Theatre’s Oklahoma!; The Little Theatre on the Square’s Addams Family, Hairspray, Mary Poppins; Juilliard’s The Winter’s Tale, Metamorphoses, Il Turco in Italia, La Sonnambula; and Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre’s A Christmas Carol.
