E D ITOR IA L No han pasado aún dos meses y el estreno de la década ya parece -a quien aún lo recuerde- un acontecimiento antiguo… El mundo va muy deprisa, y en este corto espacio de tiempo han sucedido cosas trascendentales que nos han avasallado desde los medios. Una el previsto abandono de la UE por parte del Reino Unido, adentrándose en un terreno desconocido del que sabrá salir, seguro, airoso. Tanto ellos, como quienes permanecemos en la Unión, tenemos varios desafíos por delante. Y quizá el más importante es no olvidar que fuimos leales como socios, para trasladar esa lealtad a nuestra nueva condición de amigos y vecinos.

Seguro que hay más fórmulas de hacer Europa, y las encontraremos. La otra cuestión que llena páginas y espacios televisivos, llamando nuestra atención por su importancia, es la epidemia que azota parte de China y se extiende lentamente por el mundo. Deseamos intensamente que los esfuerzos y sacrificios de las autoridades, sistema sanitario y voluntarios, den sus frutos y puedan controlar la enfermedad, y rendimos homenaje a una sociedad que está soportando con estoicismo sus peores tiempos en muchos años. Para ellos nuestra solidaridad y reconocimiento.

Not even two months have gone by, and the beginning of the new decade already seems like an old event for those who can still remember it... The world moves very fast, and in this short space of time, important things have happened which have dominated us through the media. The first of these was the UK’s expected exit from the EU, going deeper into unfamiliar territory in which the country will surely know how to leave with flying colours. Both the UK and countries that belong to the EU have several challenges ahead, and perhaps the most important thing is to remember that we were loyal as members, and to transfer that loyalty into our new position of friends and neighbours. There are bound to be different ways to form Europe, and we will find them. The other prominent matter in the media that has been attracting our attention due to its importance is the outbreak that is devastating part of China, and slowly spreading to other countries around the world. We profoundly hope that the efforts and sacrifices by the authorities, healthcare system and volunteers produce results and manage to control the virus, and we pay homage to a society that is strongly withstanding its worst times in many years. Our sympathy and acknowledgement go out to them.

Salvatore Ferragamo AW20 El director creativo de la firma, Paul Andrew, se embarca en una exploración lúdica de la naturaleza cada vez más diversa, fluida y libre de identidades masculinas contemporáneas.

Y explica: “En este primer show de Ferragamo en la nueva década he querido usar el lenguaje de la moda para preguntar: ¿A qué se parece la masculinidad en 2020? Para encontrar respuestas, empezamos estableciendo seis arquetipos masculinos “alfa”, y luego fabricamos sus atuendos aplicando la artesanía tradicional de Ferragamo guiada por una actitud decididamente inconformista, utilizando materiales lujosos táctiles y fluidos que combinan nuestras seis categorías masculinas”.

The Creative Director of the firm, Paul Andrew, sets off on a fun exploration of nature which is increasingly more diverse, fluid and free of contemporary masculine identities. As he explains: “In this first show of Ferragamo in the new decade, I wanted to use the language of fashion to ask: What does masculinity look like in 2020? To find answers, we start by setting six male archetypes “Alpha”, and then we manufacture their outfits by applying the traditional craftsmanship of Ferragamo guided by a decidedly hipster attitude, using luxurious tactile and fluid materials that combine our six male categories.”

JIM MY CHOO En 1986 se establece en el East End de Londres un zapatero nacido en Malasia (de familia de zapateros de origen chino), con cierto prestigio, llamado Jimmy Choo. La aventura resultó un éxito por la elegancia de sus creaciones, como se reflejó en la acogida que se le dispensó en Semana de la Moda de Londres de 1988.

In 1986, a Malaysian-born shoemaker (from a family of Chinese cobblers) with certain prestige called Jimmy Choo, opened a shop in the East End of London. The venture was a success due to the elegance of his creations, and this was reflected in the reception he received at the London Fashion Week in 1988.

Después de ver sus creaciones, Vogue presentó los zapatos en un reportaje de ocho páginas, lo que supuso un gran primer paso. Desde luego que Lady Di se convirtiera pronto en adicta a sus diseños, convirtiéndose de facto en su primera gran embajadora, ayudó lo suyo. En 1996, y aprovechando ese empuje, funda Jimmy Choo Ltd. con la complicidad y compañía de Tamara Mellon, entonces editora de accesorios de la revista británica Vogue.

After seeing his creations, Vogue presented the shoes in an 8-page spread, which was a big initial step. Then, of course, Lady Di became addicted to his designs, which made her his first great ambassador. Y su sobrina Sandra Choi, que había sido la encargada de Diseño, se convirtió en la Directora Creativa. Y ahí continúa. Choo dejó la compañía en 2001, dedicándose desde entonces a otros proyectos de moda y diseño, capitalizando su experiencia. De las colecciones de la firma se han dicho cosas que definen muy bien su éxito: “Corte sensual. Diseño muy a la moda. Una artesanía italiana excepcional” Con estas premisas rápidamente ganó una clientela muy sofisticada, y con ella la atención de inversores externos que ayudaron a su expansión mundial. Sandra Choi, al frente de un gran equipo, fue consciente de que el mayor escaparate es una alfombra roja, y empezó a surtir de bolsos y zapatos a las estrellas de Hollywood.

Choo left the company in 2001 to concentrate on other fashion and design projects in which he capitalised on his experience. Comments were made on the firm’s collections that accurately define their success: “a sensual style. A really trendy design. Outstanding Italian craftwork.” He rapidly earned himself a sophisticated list of clients with those premises, which in turn attracted the attention of external investors who helped him to expand on a global scale. At the head of a great team, Sandra Choi was aware that the red carpet makes the best shop window and started to supply bags and shoes to Hollywood stars.

La primera tienda había sido abierta en Londres, pero en un par de años ya estaban en Nueva York y en Beverly Hills, en Madison Avenue y Rodeo Drive respectivamente. De allí pasaron a la Avenue Montaigne de Paris, y a Gynza en Tokio. Así hasta 150 tiendas en todo el mundo. En Madrid se instalaron en la Milla de Oro en la calle Ortega y Gasset.

The first shop was opened in London, but in a couple of years, the firm opened others in New York and in Beverly Hills on Madison Avenue and Rodeo Drive respectively. From there, they opened a shop on Avenue Montaigne in Paris, and in Gynza, Tokyo. They continued expanding and opened 150 shops all over the world. Their shop in Madrid is on the Golden Mile on the street named “Ortega y Gasset”.

Parece que le gustó y cuando terminó el Instituto se matriculó en la Central St Martins School, donde comenzó un grado en Diseño de Moda.

Although she was born on the Isle of Wight, she was educated in Hong Kong, but returned as a teenager to London to finish her secondary education. At that time, she started to work for her uncle. She seemed to like it, and upon finishing secondary school, she enrolled in Central St Martins School where she started a degree in Fashion Design. On

I set out to make this collection as open as possible, so anything can happen. It’s about freedom.”

Salvatore Ferragamo ha creado una amplia oferta de zapatos, ropa y accesorios, para hombre y mujer, con el monograma Gancini. Marcando el lanzamiento de la colección, la firma reclutó una vez más a Bryanboy para crear una campaña digital. Esta temporada eligieron a siete amigos, Linda Tol, Tamu McPherson, Xenia Adonts, Carlo Sestini, Chris BurtAllan, Tina Leung y Yoyo Cao, que vistieron nuevas expresiones del icónico Gancini. La campaña fue rodada en Milán.

Salvatore Ferragamo has created a large range of shoes, clothing and accessories for men and women with the Gancini monogram. To mark the launch of the collection, the brand recruited Bryanboy once more to create the digital campaign.

This season, they chose seven friends: Linda Tol, Tamu McPherson, Xenia Adonts, Carlo Sestini, Chris Burt-Allan, Tina Leung and Yoyo Cao who dressed in new expressions of the iconic Gancini, and the campaign was filmed in Milan.

ANSORENA Hablar de una firma de joyería creada a mediados del siglo XIX parece que nos lleve, irremediablemente, a sobreexponer sus logros comerciales en un tiempo pasado. En realidad, sin olvidar nada, debería ser absolutamente al revés. Ansorena no sólo perdura sino que, además de las piezas importantes para las más significadas familias españolas (las llamadas “joyas de familia”, legado que pasa de generación en generación), crean nuevas colecciones de un diseño contemporáneo, fresco y actual.

To talk about a jewellery company established during the 19th century seems to inevitably take us to overexpose their commercial achievements in the past, but as a matter of fact, and without forgetting anything, this should not be the case at all. Ansorena has not only lasted in the business because they made the most important pieces for the most renowned Spanish families (the so-called “family jewels” - a legacy passed on to each successive generation), as they create new collections with a current, fresh and modern design.

Not only do they make tiaras and necklaces for showing off in events reserved for a few privileged people, as they also make pieces designed to be worn in the workplace or at a dinner with friends without compromising at all on the quality of the stones, chains or settings.

Don Celestino de Ansorena y Alejandre, el fundador, consiguió ser nombrado en 1858 Joyero y Diamantista de la Real Casa. Ello le reportó fama y prestigio, y con toda seguridad una gran libertad en la creación y en el diseño. De hecho la Prensa se hizo eco, en 1860, de la extraordinaria originalidad de un brazalete (destinado a la viuda de un general) cuyo aro “estaba formado por troncos de árbol quebrados y esmaltados en azul. Entre cuatro de sus ramas se hallaba, rodeado por hojas de diamantes talla brillante, un medallón con el retrato del militar fallecido” A nosotros, en la actualidad, el brazalete nos parecerá un tanto recargado, pero en la época mereció atención y elogios.

Mr Celestino Ansorena, and founder Alejandre, managed to become named “Jeweller and diamond merchant to the Royal Household” in 1858. This brought fame and prestige, as well as complete security and a great freedom when it came to their creation and design. In fact, the press affirmed this in 1860 due to the extraordinary originality of a bracelet (designed for a general’s widow) of which its hoop “was formed by bent tree trunks enamelled in blue. Among four of its branches were surrounded by leaves with brilliant cut diamonds, and a medallion with a portrait of the late general”. In this day and age, we think the bracelet is a little overelaborate, but it deserved the praise and attention during that time.

En las innumerables piezas realizadas por encargo del mundo religioso la libertad de diseño debía ser insignificante, pero en los dibujos y fotografías que quedan de las piezas “privadas” se aprecia una creatividad que se adaptaba al cambio de los tiempos. Hay collares de principios del siglo XX que podrían vestirse ahora mismo sin que a nadie llamaran la atención por “antiguos”. Cuando llega el Art Decó, la Casa tiene ya 75 años de existencia, pero en sus joyas prima la calidad, por supuesto, y la modernidad. Y durante las siguientes décadas afrontaron con éxito el reto de seguir el paso de un mundo que cambiaba a gran velocidad, aceptando el desafío de mantener la tradición para satisfacer a los clientes más clásicos y, al mismo tiempo, añadir y refrescar su catálogo para no quedar obsoletos, abriéndose a las modas y tendencias.

Among the countless pieces made for and commissioned by the religious world, the freedom of design must have been insignificant, but there is a creativity in the drawings and photographs left of the “private” pieces that adapted to the change of the times. There are necklaces they made at the start of the 20th century that could be worn right now without anyone thinking they look antique. When Art Deco arrived, the firm had been in the business for 75 years, but their jewels naturally gave priority to quality and modernity. And during the following decades, the firm successfully faced the challenge of following the way of a world that was changing at high speed, accepting the challenge of keeping the tradition to satisfy the most classic clients, while adding and refreshing their catalogue to avoid becoming obsolete, and being open to new fashions and trends.

The privilege of wearing a watch by H. Moser & Cie. is an experience that only lovers of fine watchmaking and enthusiasts of the Great Manufactures and perfection know how to enjoy. The mere sensation of having one in their hands was exceptional, and even more so to listen to its story.

Heinrich Moser nació en Schaffhausen en 1805. Su padre era maestro relojero en una ciudad, un cantón y un país especialistas en fabricar relojes, así que lo raro es que hubiera salido médico. Pero a los 22 años se percató de que era uno más en su pueblo, y decidió emigrar a San Petersburgo, donde su obsesión por la calidad y elegancia fue inmediatamente apreciada, especialmente en el trabajo artesano para las “cajas” y los componentes “Premium” en el interior. Aun así, terminó volviendo a Suiza, a Le Locle, y allí se estableció creando calibres con “ingeniosas técnicas innovadoras”, como decían en la época.

Heinrich Moser was born in Schaffhausen in 1805. His father was a master watchmaker in a city, a canton and a country of specialists in making watches, so it was strange that he could have been a doctor.

But at the age of 22, he realised that he was another one in the village and decided to emigrate to Saint Petersburg where his obsession for quality and elegance was immediately appreciated, especially in the artisan work for the cases and premium parts inside the watches.

Even still, he ended up returning to Switzerland, at a place called Le Locle, where he established himself creating calibres with “ingenious innovative techniques,” as they called them during that time.

La idea era modernizar la tradición que había heredado de su familia y crear un sistema de distribución mundial -en aquel tiempo fue una especie de visionario comercial-, copiado después por toda la Industria. A los pocos años ya vendía sus relojes en San Petersburgo, Moscú, Nizhny Novgorod (la quinta ciudad en la Rusia Imperial), o Kiev. Y, siguiendo la Ruta de la Seda, en Asia Central, Persia y China. No sólo surtía a la Corte, también al Ejército ruso. Heinrich se pasó la vida haciendo progresar a su ciudad y cantón natales, y a mediados del siglo XIX había transformado un lugar adormecido, poco más que una aldea, en una localidad industrializada. Eso lo disfrutó plenamente, y cuando falleció en 1874 faltaban más de 40 años para el triunfo de la Revolución bolchevique, con lo que se ahorró vivir el fin de su marca en Rusia.

The idea was to modernise the tradition that he had inherited from his family and to create a global distribution system (during that time he was a sort of commercial visionary), which was then copied by the whole industry. A few years later, he had already sold his watches in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Novgorod (the fifth city in the Russian Empire) and Kiev. He continued with the Silk Route, Central Asia, Persia and China. Besides supplying his watches to the Imperial Court, he also supplied the Russian army. Heinrich spent his life making his city and native canton progress, and halfway through the 19th century, he had transformed an inactive place that was little more than a small village into an industrialised town. He thoroughly enjoyed doing that, and when he died in 1874, there were more than 40 years left until the triumph of the Bolshevik Revolution which meant he didn’t have to experience the end of his brand in Russia.

Cuando se cumplió el 2º centenario del nacimiento de su fundador, la marca resurgió de las cenizas. Hoy día controlan todo el proceso de producción, manteniendo el espíritu fundacional para conseguir bellísimas piezas de una calidad fuera de serie. Lo acontecido en los últimos años se sintetiza en su última creación. La presentaron el pasado enero, y se llama Streamliner Flyback Chronograph Automatic. “Todo es nuevo…” nos dicen, “…una nueva línea, una nueva caja, un nuevo armís integrado, un nuevo movimiento, una nueva esfera, unos nuevos minuteros... Todo es nuevo pero todo es Moser.”

El resultado es una caja con forma de cojín, de superficie ligeramente abombada y esquinas rebajadas, que se lleva bien con los contornos del exclusivo brazalete de acero integrado en el modelo, elemento central de la identidad visual del reloj.

However, the brand rose from the ashes upon 200 years since the founder’s birthday. Today, they control the whole production process keeping the foundational spirit to achieve such beautiful pieces made with exceptional quality. Y luego resulta que es absolutamente cierto. Desde su apertura, en 1962, el resort ha sido un lugar escogido por las celebridades y viajeros distinguidos de todo el mundo. George Huntington Hartford II, heredero de la A.&P. Tea Company, compró la propiedad llamada “Sangri La” en 1960. Como su idea era crear un paraíso para la élite de Hollywood y de los negocios, importó de Europa fuentes y estatuas que repartió por la propiedad. Lo primero que llama la atención es que ocupan 14 hectáreas, entre las que se encuentran unos jardines inspirados en los de Versalles. En pleno Caribe. Y algo más curioso aún: Entre sus parterres y macizos de flores encontramos un claustro del siglo X, que compró en 1924 William Randolph Hearst a unos marchantes parisinos con la intención de colocarlo en su castillo del Norte de California. Cuando llegaron por barco a Brooklyn, las columnas se mezclaron en el muelle con las del monasterio cisterciense de Santa María la Real.

And it turns out that this is totally true. Since the resort opened in 1962, this place has been a destination for celebrities and distinguished travellers from all over the world. The heir of the A.&P. Tea Company, George Huntington Hartford II bought the property called “Shangri-La” in 1960. As his idea was to create a paradise for the Hollywood elite and business, he imported fountains and statues from Europe that he spread over the property. The first thing that stands out is that it takes up 14 hectares, among which include some gardens inspired by those in Versailles situated in the middle of the Caribbean; and something even more curious: among the flower beds and clusters of flowers, we find 10th century cloisters that William Randolph Hearst bought from Parisian merchants in 1924 with the intention of placing them in his castle in the north of California. When they were shipped to Brooklyn, the columns got mixed up in the dock with those of the cisterciense monastery of Santa María la Real.

Como el magnate empezó a perder su fortuna, el claustro estuvo empaquetado durante 25 años, hasta que en los años 60 unos empresarios decidieron reconstruir la iglesia española, pero no el resto que fue adquirido inmediatamente por Hatford. En el centro hay una estatua de mármol blanco llamada “Silencio”. Lo que da una idea de la tranquilidad. La playa de Paradise Island tiene 8 kilómetros de largo, suficiente no solo para pasear sino para -casi- perderse. A lo largo del tiempo las siguientes generaciones han seguido disfrutando de todo lo que ofrece este Four Seasons, villas inspiradas en las balinesas con spa, y un campo de golf. Hay un par de esas villas que están junto a la playa y tienen piscina propia. Es decir, después de un rato en el océano puedes darte un chapuzón en agua dulce y luego descansar con la brisa en la terraza privada.

En el complejo también se encuentra el restaurante DUNE, considerado el más prestigioso de Nassau. Lo lleva el chef galardonado con estrellas Michelin Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

As the tycoon started to lose his fortune, the cloisters were preserved for 25 years until some entrepreneurs decided to rebuild the Spanish church during the 1960s, but not the rest that Hatford immediately acquired. In the middle, there is white marble statue called “Silence”, which gives an idea of the serenity. The Paradise Island beach stretches over 8 kilometres, which is not only long enough for a stroll, as it could also practically make you lose your bearings. Over the years, the following generations have been continuing to enjoy everything that this Four Seasons has to offer, including Balinese-style villas with a spa, and a golf course. There are a couple of those villas next to the beach and have their own pool. So, after a while in the sea, you can take a dip in fresh water and then relax in the breeze on the private terrace. The DUNE restaurant is also part of the complex and is considered as the most prestigious in Nassau. Michelin star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten runs the establishment, and his fine food combines traditional Bahamian cuisine with international dishes.

Es una forma de agitar que aligera la potente mezcla para el bebedor aficionado de Martini”. Cuando se le pregunta al bartender Cash sobre la receta de esta bebida, exclusiva de l’Ocean Club, incide en el hecho de que agitar atenúa el impacto del primer trago: “Cuando se agita enérgicamente la mezcla se obtienen cristales de hielo en la superficie. Es el secreto para diluir ligeramente un cocktail compuesto por 3 medidas de diferentes alcoholes.

Agitarlo suaviza el sabor”, comenta Cash. Por si tienen curiosidad la fórmula: 2 medidas de Gordon’s Gin, 1 medida de Vodka Stoli, 1 medida de Lillet Blanc, añadir los ingredientes en una coctelera con hielo y agitar. Servirlo en un vaso de champagne y acompañar de una rodaja de limón. El mejor recuerdo del Ocean Club, el Resort de Bahamas de Four Seasons.

A primera vista no parece un arquitecto. Y no porque tengan rasgos definidos, que utilicen gafas o que fumen en pipa, sino porque los que hemos conocido antes tenían un halo de trascendencia que Javier Gómez Pioz quizá lo tenga en el estudio o en la Facultad, pero que en una cafetería se diluye en algo cotidiano cuando al interlocutor le apasiona lo que hace.

He doesn’t look like an architect at first sight, and this isn’t only because architects don’t have clearly defined features, wear glasses or smoke a pipe, but because the architects we have met had an aura of importance that Javier Gómez Pioz perhaps has in the studio or in the university, but in a café, this aura fades into something more normal when the speaker is passionate about what he does.

Primero te cuenta su vida, su paso por Arquitectura en Madrid, añadiendo como guinda la anécdota de cuando su padre utilizó a un marchante para comprarle unos cuadros, horrorosos, ocultándole de dónde provenía el dinero. Conseguir algo siempre lleva implícito que hay que trabajárselo, o “Nada importante se consigue sin esfuerzo”. Por casualidad, con las lecciones aprendidas, ilusión y convencimiento, en una librería de segunda mano encontró un libro que le iba a cambiar las lecciones, y a enriquecer el convencimiento, además de redoblar la ilusión. “Iniciación a la Biónica”.

First, he talks about his life, and his experience with architecture in Madrid and then tops it all by telling the story of when his father used an art dealer to buy some of his awful paintings and didn’t tell him where the money actually came from. To achieve something always implies working for it, or “nothing worth having was ever achieved without effort”. So, with lessons learned, eagerness and certainty, he happened to come across a book in a second-hand bookshop titled: “An Introduction to Bionics” that was going to change those lessons, enrich his certainty and double his eagerness.

Y ¿Qué es la Biónica? A saber: “La aplicación de soluciones biológicas a la técnica de los sistemas de arquitectura, diseño, ingeniería y tecnología moderna”. Dicho así parece una locura, pero cuando empieza a enseñarte bocetos, y maquetas y te cuenta que esos tejados están basados en los nenúfares, y que tal edificio que ha construido en China o en la India tiene un sistema de aireación parecido al de ciertos insectos, o que una maqueta que presentó en Londres de un edificio que podría alcanzar 1,2 km de altura, o incluso más, tiene la estructura interna de un árbol, y la externa de los huesecillos que conforman un pájaro o de un capullo de seda… Cuando te enseña fotografías de todo lo que ha ido construyendo, a lo largo de su vida, comprendes que la Naturaleza ha ido encontrando el sistema más sencillo de la forma más perfecta, que la Naturaleza es el Gran Arquitecto por excelencia, que está ahí para que bebamos de su experiencia y conocimiento... La Evolución ha ido desechando maquetas. Algo que en la Arquitectura también se puede hacer ahora que se ha descubierto. Tiene unas torres que están basadas en los cactus con una piel exterior resistente, lo que permite reducir el número de las columnas interiores, ampliando la funcionalidad.

And what is bionics? Namely: “the application of biological solutions to the technique of the systems of architecture, design, engineering and modern technology.” It sounds like madness put that way, but when you start to see the sketches and models, and it tells you that those rooftops were designed to use water lilies, and that building built in China or India has a ventilation system similar to certain insects, or the miniature model of a building presented in London could reach 1.2 km tall, and even has the internal structure of a tree, and the external part of the small bones of a bird, or a silk cocoon... When he shows you photographs of everything that he has built throughout his life, we understand that nature found the simplest system of the most perfect shape, and that nature is the quintessential great architect which is there for us to draw from its knowledge and experience... Evolution has been discarding scale models, and this discovery can also be used now in architecture. He designed some towers based on cacti with a hard-wearing exterior skin, which allows a reduction of the number of interior columns and gives them more practicality.

Otras que son como la estructura tripartita de las vértebras de los peces para que circule el aire entre ellas, con lo que se ahorra energía en la climatización de lugares particularmente calurosos. En su libro “Arquitectura Biónica” nos habla detalladamente de todo esto en un espacio mucho más extenso del que aquí disponemos. En la Universidad de Columbia, en Nueva York, entendió que “la lógica de las estructuras orgánicas se basa en el ahorro máximo de material y la optimización del consumo energético, dos conceptos fácilmente extrapolables a la ingeniería de la construcción y a la Arquitectura”. En la actualidad sigue trabajando en su Torre Biónica.

Others are like the three-part structure of fish vertebrae, so that the air can circulate between them, and results in saving energy for the climate control of particularly hot places. In his book titled “Bionic Architecture”, he thoroughly explains all this in a much larger space than what we have available here. Este año Audi Tradition celebra un aniversario particularmente especial. Hace exactamente 40 años, en el Salón de Ginebra, la marca de los cuatro aros presentó el Audi quattro. Al hacerlo mostró al mundo lo que iban a ser las siguientes décadas en los rallyes. Los eventos tradicionales en el calendario de Audi Tradition para 2020 incluyen, entre otros, el Goodwood Festival of Speed, los Classic Days en Schloss Dyck o el Eifel Rallye en Daun y el Donau Classic, donde, por supuesto, los modelos quattro tendrán un protagonismo especial.

Audi Tradition celebrates a particularly special anniversary this year, as it was exactly 40 years ago since the brand of the four rings presented the Audi Quattro at the Geneva Motor Show. By doing so, they showed the world what it was going to see in the rallies over the following decades. Among other traditional events on the Audi Tradition calendar for 2020 include the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Classic Days in Schloss Dyck, the Eifel Rallye in Daun, and the Donau Classic where the Quattro models will naturally play an important part.

La historia de Masaveu Bodegas es la historia de una pasiรณn por los grandes vinos de Rioja, que se explicita precisamente con Bodegas Murua cuando Don Pedro Masaveu Peterson decide, en 1974, comprar esta bodega situada en Elciego, en La Rioja Alavesa. La casualidad y la suerte hicieron que pudieran mantener incluso el nombre, la etiqueta, y seguir con una tradiciรณn que llevaba en la zona desde el siglo X, es decir, desde el principio de la Baja Edad Media.

The history of Masaveu Bodegas is the story of a passion for the great Rioja wines which is clearly expressed by Bodegas Murua when Mr Pedro Masaveu Peterson decided to buy this winery in 1974 located in the town of Elciego, within the Rioja Alavesa region. By chance and luck, they could even keep the name, label and continue with a tradition that ran in the area since the 10th century, which is since around the beginning of the Late Middle Ages.

En la actualidad se enorgullecen de tener un Enoturismo muy especial y nosotros, que lo hemos vivido, damos fe de que hay dos puntos diferenciadores con otras bodegas. El primero es el paisaje. No sólo por la población que corona el edificio de Frank Ghery, que todo lo domina, sino porque alrededor de Murua hay una enorme extensión de viñedo. No es todo, puesto que tienen en total 110 hectáreas en las que abunda el Tempranillo, pero también hay Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura, Malvasía y Garnacha Blanca. Y el segundo es el Arte. La Corporación Masaveu lleva décadas coleccionando piezas artísticas de todo tipo.

At present, they are proud to offer very special wine tourism, and as we have experienced, we can tell you that there are two points that set it apart from other wineries. The first point is the landscape because not only due to the town that crowns the building designed

by Frank Ghery, which dominates it all, but also because there is a huge area of vineyard around Murua; and that’s not all, as they have a total of 110 hectares in which there is plenty of the Tempranillo variety, but there is also Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura, Malvasía and Grenache blanc. The second point is to do with art, as the Masaveu Corporation has been collecting all kinds of artworks for decades.

Como el edificio que compraron en los setenta se les había quedado pequeño, construyeron otro junto a una de las parcelas manteniendo la arquitectura de la zona e incluyendo en él las obras de Arte. Sorprende, por ejemplo, que las ventanas del edificio nuevo estén adornadas con rejas medievales o que, en los muchos recovecos por los que el visitante va paseando, haya obras de discípulos de Sorolla que tratan de vendimias o de trasiegos. Y como culmen, en una sala de reuniones, o de catas, junto al jardín, un enorme cuadro de Miquel Barceló representando la encimera de una cocina con los restos de una comida coronada -seguro, aunque no se vea- por un gran vino. La primera idea de Don Pedro fue crear caldos para consumo de la familia. Pero tras su fallecimiento se decidió comercializarlo, ya que se estaba produciendo una cantidad suficiente y las cosas buenas hay que compartirlas. Aquí llegamos a otra peculiaridad, para mantener la calidad prefieren hacer menos botellas de las que podrían, y actualmente “sólo” producen 250.000 al año a pesar de su enorme viñedo. Allí te lo explican. El enólogo Mathieu Barrault se pasa el tiempo en la viña. Observando, limpiando, comprobando. Y luego en la bodega, rotando las barricas para que las lías (las madres del vino, es decir, los precipitados que se forman durante su elaboración) se vayan posando. Para los que no comprenden el mágico mundo de estas levaduras tienen una barrica con la tapa transparente, para poder verlas en su espiritual danza. Hay distintos tipos de visitas pero todas merecen la pena. Incluso en la más sencilla hay una visita al viñedo, a la bodega, y como colofón una cata.

Since the building they bought in the 1970s was eventually too small for them, they built another one beside one of the plots, keeping the architecture of the area and use it to house their artworks. It is surprising that the windows of the new building are adorned with medieval bars, for example, or that there are artworks by Sorolla’s students on the subject of wine harvesting or rackings as visitors pass by the many nooks and crannies in the building. And to top it all off, there is a huge painting by Miquel Barceló that depicts a kitchen counter with the leftovers of a meal, and although it is not visible, this is surely rounded off by a great wine. Mr Peterson’s first idea was to make wine just for the family to enjoy, but after he passed away, the decision was made for the wine to be commercialised, as there was enough being produced, and because good things have to be shared. This leads us to another peculiarity: in order to keep up the level of quality, they prefer to produce less bottles than the amount they could, and currently “only” produce 250,000 per year from their enormous vineyard. They explain this to you there at the winery.

Wine expert, Mathieu Barrault spends his time in the vineyard observing, cleaning, checking, and then in the wine cellar rotating the barrels, so that the lees (the sediments of the wine, that is to say the precipitates that form during its elaboration) start to settle. And for those who don’t understand the magical world of these yeasts, they have a barrel with a transparent top, so they can be seen during their spiritual dance. There are different kinds of visits and they are all worth doing. Even in the most basic visit includes a visit to the vineyard, the wine cellar and some wine tasting to finish off the visit.

Mathieu Barrault, procedente de Niort (Francia), se incorporó a la bodega como enólogo y director técnico con una amplia experiencia tanto en Francia, desde el Valle del Loira a Saint Emilion (Burdeos), como en España, en Toro y el Bierzo. Esas grandes regiones vinícolas han enriquecido sus conocimientos y mejorado su capacidad de entender y leer las necesidades que tiene el viñedo de Bodegas Murua. Se ha dedicado desde el primer día a extraer el carácter más puro de Murua y reforzar su identidad. VS y M de Murua 2015 son las primeras añadas elaboradas por el enólogo para Murua.

Estos vinos dan sensaciones inéditas en la copa, que tras el recorte en las crianzas en barrica logran atrapar las expresiones más vivas y veraces del viñedo: la fruta y la mineralidad.

Mathieu Barrault from Niort (France) joined the winery as a wine expert and Technical Director with vast experience gained in France at the Valle del Loira a Saint Emilion (Burdeos), and in Spain in Toro and Bierzo. Those large wine regions enriched his knowledge and improved his capacity to understand and read the needs of the vineyard in Bodegas Murua. Since the first day, he has devoted his time to extracting Murua’s purest character, and to strengthen its identity.

VS and M by Murua 2015 are the first vintage produced by the wine expert for Murua. These wines give new flavours in the glass, which after cutting back in barrel ageing, capture the truest and most intense expressions from the vineyard: the fruit and the minerality.

ELABORACIÓN Y CRIANZA, fermentación a temperatura controlada. Seguimiento puntual de la maceración. La fermentación maloláctica y el decantado se realizaron en barricas de roble francés y americano. 20 meses en barricas de roble francés y americano (barricas con un uso máximo de 3 años). La crianza en botella de nuestros Reservas cumple un período mínimo de 5 años en el botellero subterráneo de la bodega para alcanzar el grado óptimo de maduración y redondez. AROMA, nariz muy expresiva e intensa. Se adivinan aromas de ciruela, casis, cereza madura, clavo y montes bajos. BOCA, gran equilibrio en acidez en unos taninos sedosos. Una boca potente y duradera deja entrever aromas de arándanos, ciruela y romeros. Mucha finura y largo postgusto.

With their own vineyards divided into eight areas mainly planted with red grape varieties (Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano and Mazuelo), and depending on tints like the composition and structure of the land, the orientation and the solar exposition of the bunches, Murua has always set out for each variety to be capable of expressing the different native soil in the best way which makes up the estate.

COUPAGE 92% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano and Mazuelo. PRODUCTION AND VINTAGE, fermentation at a controlled temperature. Timely monitoring of the maceration. The malolactic fermentation and decanting are carried out in French and American oak barrels: 20 months in French and American oak barrels (barrels with a maximum use of 3 years). The bottle ageing of our Reservas is carried out over a minimum period of 5 years in the underground wine rack in the winery to reach the ideal degree of fermentation and roundness. APPEARANCE: a bright red cherry colour. AROMA: very expressive and intense on the nose. You can make out aromas of plum, blackcurrant, ripe cherry, clove and low mountains. FLAVOUR: a great acidic balance in some silky tannins. A strong and lasting flavour suggests aromas of blueberries, plum and rosemary, as well as a lot of delicacy and a long aftertaste.

2016 La añada 2016 destacó por un invierno de temperaturas suaves. La primavera fue fresca y nublada, retrasando la brotación en comparación a su desarrollo habitual. El verano, muy seco y cálido y con noches frescas, permitió a la planta descansar y tener un buen desarrollo. El buen tiempo fue favorable para el desarrollo de la vid y obtener una excelente calidad a la vez que una buena producción.

The 2016 vintage stood out due to a winter of mild temperatures. The spring was cool and overcast which delayed the bud break compared to the usual development. The hot and dry summer with cool nights allowed the vines to relax and develop well, and the good weather was favourable for the grapevine, and for obtaining excellent quality, as well as good production.

VS MURUA 2016

Los viñedos de los que procede Murua VS tienen entre 20 y 55 años de edad. Los suelos son principalmente arcillosos, y alguno arcillo-calcáreo. Las viñas con un buen porcentaje de arcilla garantizan el frescor y la fruta en los vinos. COUPAGE 90% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo. ELABORACIÓN Y CRIANZA, fermentación espontánea, a temperaturas entre 24 y 27 grados. Remontados suaves, “delestage” y poca oxigenación en la fermentación alcohólica.

Maceración entre 10 y15 días. Crianza de 16 meses en barrica de roble francés (30 %) y americano (70 %). VISTA, color rojo frambuesa brillante de intensidad media-alta y con lágrimas lentas. AROMA, la nariz es elegante y persistente, se perciben intensas notas de frutas rojas como frambuesa, cereza y cassis. En el conjunto de aromas predominan los característicos montes bajos de las parcelas, destacando el tomillo. La nariz es a la vez dulce y profunda. BOCA, el ataque es suave, produciéndose una explosión aromática. Se manifiestan esas frutas rojas mezcladas con aromas florales, ceras… mucha potencia aromática. El vino es muy equilibrado, fresco e intenso. El final de boca es dulce e infinito…

The vineyards that produce Murua VS are between 20 and 55 years old. The soil is mainly clay-like, and other soil is the calcareous clay type. With a high percentage of clay, the vineyards guarantee the freshness and the fruit in the wines. COUPAGE 90% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo. PRODUCTION AND VINTAGE: spontaneous fermentation at temperatures between 24 and 27 degrees. Soft remontage, délestage and little oxygenation in the alcoholic fermentation. Maceration between 10 and 15 days. 16 months of ageing in French (30%) and American (70%) oak barrels.

APPEARANCE: a medium to strong intensity of a bright, raspberry red colour, and with slow tears.

AROMA: elegant and lasting on the nose with intense notes of red fruits like raspberry, cherry and blackcurrants. The characteristic low mountains of the plots dominate in the combination of aromas among which thyme is a prominent scent. This wine is sweet on the nose with depth. FLAVOUR: the attack is soft, producing an aromatic explosion.

Those red fruits are mixed with floral and honeycomb aromas... and a lot of aromatic power. The wine is very balanced, fresh and intense. The aftertaste is sweet and endless ...

M DE MURUA 2016

VARIEDAD 100 % Tempranillo. CRIANZA en barricas de roble francés nuevas durante 18 meses. La uva procede de una exclusiva selección de los viñedos más antiguos que Bodegas Murua posee en la zona de Elciego.

Producción limitada a 4.550 botellas. VISTA, un color cereza brillante con largas lágrimas.

AROMA, las primeras notas son sutiles pero conquistadoras: arándanos, fresa, violeta, cereza… poco a poco consigue alcanzar una gran intensidad en la copa. Gran complejidad aromática perfectamente relacionada con el roble francés. BOCA, entrada aterciopelada, gran volumen y duradero. El vino tiene un perfecto equilibrio entre la estructura de la madera y la dulzura del “bouquet”. Regaliz, frambuesa, rosa y delicados toques minerales.

2017 En las 110 hectáreas de viñedo propio las cepas de variedades autóctonas como Viura, Malvasía y Garnacha Blanca, tienen entre 40 y 80 años de edad, y son auténticas joyas situadas en las cabeceras de las viñas, cultivadas tal y como se hacía antiguamente en Elciego y el resto de La Rioja Alavesa. La añada 2017 fue complicada, debido a que las reservas hídricas continuaron siendo bajas, después de la sequía de 2015 y 2016, sin mejorar durante el invierno. Las temperaturas cálidas de marzo causaron una brotación temprana de la planta, vegetación que se vio terriblemente afectada por la helada del 27 de abril. Gracias a las lluvias de mayo, la planta recibió el agua que necesitaba para desarrollarse. Finalmente, la vendimia fue temprana, realizándose el 19 y 20 de septiembre, con rendimientos bajos y excelente concentración de azúcar y fruta.

In the 110 hectares of their vineyard, the native varieties of vines such as Viura, Malvasia and Grenache Blanc are between 40 and 80 years old and are real gems situated at the top of the vineyards. These are cultivated in the same way as in the past in Elciego and the rest of the Rioja Alavesa region. The 2017 vintage was complicated due to the water reserves continuing to be low after the droughts of 2015 and 2016 without improving during the winter. The warm temperatures in March caused the grapevines an early bud break and these were terribly affected by the cold temperatures on 27 April. Thanks to the rainfall in May, the vines received enough water to develop. Finally, the grape harvest was early and occurred on 19 and 20 September with low yields and excellent concentration of sugar and fruit.

MURUA BLANCO

FERMENTADO EN BARRICA 2017-(BARREL AGED WHITE WINE) COUPAGE 85% Viura, 10% Malvasía y 5% Garnacha Blanca. ELABORACIÓN Y CRIANZA, siguiendo un proceso tradicional el vino fermentó en barricas nuevas de roble francés y americano durante 15 días.

Una vez terminada la fermentación el vino se crio en las mismas barricas, y sobre sus lías, durante nueve meses antes de pasar a los botelleros de Murua.

VISTA, amarillo dorado pálido, con lágrimas lentas y largas. AROMA, expresivo, limpio y fresco. La complejidad se muestra en múltiples aromas como limón, “brioche”, manzanilla, té, menta, y ligeras notas de tabaco. BOCA, entrada discreta, destacando la finura. El paso por boca refleja la personalidad de este vino de más profundidad, volumen graso, con buena acidez, notas de flores blancas, y cremosidad y mantequilla… Un vino joven y prometedor.

La añada 2017 hace recordar que los grandes vinos blancos pueden ser mucho más que “un vino del año”.

Once the fermentation finished, the wine aged in the same barrels and with its lees for nine months before being moved to the Murua bottle racks. APPEARANCE: pale gold yellow with slow and long tears. AROMA: expressive, clean and fresh. The complexity comes in multiple aromas like lemon, “brioche”, camomile, tea, mint and light notes of tobacco. FLAVOUR: discreet on entry with a prominent delicacy. The personality of this wine is evident while in the mouth, as it shows its sheer depth, oily volume with good acidity, notes of white flowers, creaminess and butter... A young and promising wine.

Steffana Guzman A Steffana, que desde muy pequeña empezó a ir a cursos de pastelería, le gustaba cocinar todos los fines de semana en casa. A los 15 años montó un “mini negocio” para vender tartas a conocidos. En ese momento se dio cuenta de que esa era su pasión. Estudió en San Diego, California, en el Pastry Chef, y luego hizo sus prácticas en Orange County. “Al principio buscaba inspiración en otros chefs e ideas que me gustaban, pero con el tiempo me fui dando cuenta que todo lo de mi alrededor mi inspiraba, la naturaleza, el arte, la moda y desde ahí lo disfruto mucho más, ya es un reto ver de que manera se puede convertir ese “objeto” o idea en un pastel”. De entre sus ingredientes el más utilizado es el chocolate para hacer figuras, pero también suele usar gelatina y hojas de arroz para decorar. En la actualidad dirige “The Cake Studio”, donde crea unos pasteles y unas tartas que no sólo están buenos sino que son bellísimos.

Since she was very little, Steffana started going to confectionery courses, and liked to bake things at home every weekend. At the age of 15, she started a “little business” selling cakes to people she knew. It was then when she realised that this was her passion. Having studied at Pastry Chef in San Diego, California, she then gained work experience in Orange County. “At first, I was looking for inspiration from other chefs and ideas I liked, but over time, I realised that everything around me was an inspiration like nature, art, fashion, and I enjoyed it much more this way, as it’s a challenge to see how I can change that “object” or idea into a cake.” Among the ingredients, she mostly uses chocolate for making figures, but she often uses jelly and rice paper for decoration.

Guzman presently runs “The Cake Studio”, where she makes some cakes and tarts that are not just tasty – they are also really spectacular.

Casi obligado el baño en las piscinas naturales de Porto Moniz, o visitar las Cuevas de São Vicente, ocho túneles excavados por la lava de aproximadamente 1000 metros de longitud que descubren a los visitantes pozas subterráneas como el Lago de los Deseos. Para los amantes de las panorámicas y de las vistas vertiginosas el norte de Madeira es el paisaje ideal, con numerosos acantilados y montes escarpados desde los que contemplar la inmensidad del océano y el relieve volcánico de la isla, como es el caso del Mirador das Cabanas, en São Jorge, o el Mirador del velo de la novia en Seixal. Y aunque la mayor parte de las playas se concentran en la isla de Porto Santo, Madeira también posee algunos enclaves en los que pisar arena antes de darse un baño. These caves have eight tunnels that were formed by lava and are approximately 1000 metres long in which visitors discover underground wells such as the Wishing Well. The north of Madeira is perfect for lovers of panoramic views at dizzy heights with numerous cliffs and steep mountains from where we can look over the vastness of the ocean and the island’s volcanic topography which may be observed from Mirador das Cabanas in São Jorge, or Mirador del Véu da Noiva in Seixal.

And although most of the beaches are found on the island of Porto Santo, Madeira also has some enclaves where you can step on the sand before taking a dip in the sea. Calheta beach, or Machico Beach, at the other end of the island, both have imported sand. Prainha is an enclosed bay with natural sand and easy access next to Ponta de São Lourenço on the southeast coast of Madeira, and the other natural sand beach is in Seixal and situated in a paradisiacal location of the north coast which has become one of the most photographed places on the island.

Among the most scenic and attractive villages on the west coast of Madeira, we find the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos crowned by Cabo Girão - the highest cliff in Europe at 580 metres tall, and the second tallest in the world. A similar place to this is the high ground in the freguesia of Curral das Freiras, which is a little village situated in a deep valley that makes an unforgettable trip for visitors.

En ese contexto se enmarca esta iniciativa de Hatim, responsable del Restaurante Vall de Cavall, que con su Centro Hípico ubicado en el precioso valle de Gata acogió a estos chicos para una jornada inolvidable de contacto con la hípica y con la restauración, y sobre todo una jornada de motivación personal y laboral para su futuro, pues la propia carrera profesional de Hatim, de origen magrebí al igual que varios de ellos, supuso un aliciente y una luz en el horizonte.
