Each week Petey Cerf visited her friend in a nursing home. One evening when Petey was visiting, the woman in the shared room began crying out, “Help me!” A nurse walking past stopped in the doorway, yelled at the woman, “Shut up!,” then turned and walked away. Petey was disturbed to see the woman’s obituary in the newspaper the following morning. She was galvanized to change the poor care older Kansans were suffering.

Kansas Advocates for Better Care (KABC) was founded in 1975 by “the small band of six,” a group of women from Kansas (Jessie Branson, Petey Cerf, Leslie Ketzel, Harriet Nehring, Katie Pyle and Bryona Wiley) who traveled across the state to visit nursing homes and speak with residents. They documented the heartbreaking stories elders shared of poor care, abuse and severe understaffing.

When the women brought their findings to the legislature, they were initially regarded with mistrust. Petey commented to The National Observer (November 1, 1975): “When we went to the state legislature to plead for reform, there were just a few of us; the industry was out in force, and we

were squashed. … Now we’ve decided to build a statewide organization, go out and get the votes, and then march right back.”

As any woman with her mind made up, Petey did just that. In 1977 KABC turned over a petition with 1,400 signatures requesting a state-led Nursing Home Advisory Committee, to which the Governor appointed founders Petey Cerf and Jesse Branson. They passed landmark legislation including a law authorizing civil penalties against nursing homes for violating health and safety standards.

In 1987 KABC successfully advocated for the passage of the federal Nursing Home Reform Act. And 45 years later, KABC is still powered by strong women advocates with an all-female staff working to improve the quality of elder care. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and The Willow Domestic Violence Center is holding a series of presentations and events to raise awareness of domestic violence issues in our community. This year will mark a giant leap for both staff and the community toward providing safe shelter for survivors, as the Willow has begun the process of opening its second shelter space. This space offers room for up to 20 new beds, nearly doubling the agency’s current 28-bed capacity, which has been running at full for over a year.

The Willow Domestic Violence Center provides shelter, support and services to survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking in Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson County. The Willow has served the Lawrence community since 1976; it began as a volunteer-only network of safe homes for women experiencing abuse. Since that time, the Willow has grown into a non-profit agency with a staff of 31, providing not only shelter, but also advocacy, referrals, education, prevention and case management.

In addition to the two shelters, the Willow has a transitional housing program, based at Restoration House. This

house can serve up to three families; also, there are six single-family transitional housing apartments. The Willow serves all survivors, regardless of gender identity, and works within community and schools to train businesses, organizations and students about the public health issues surrounding domestic violence and human trafficking, and how to recognize those caught in cycles of abuse, and how to help.

This October, the Willow hosts Stronger Today 5K: 50 State Challenge, a virtual 5K in which participants can run, walk, roll or stroll any time during October to raise awareness for survivors of domestic violence.

All participants receive a T-shirt and a custom Stronger Today 5K medal.

“We’re excited to open this up nationwide this year,” says Will Averill, Director of Communications. “We’d love to have at least one person from each state.”

Give Your Skin & Hair Some Love Recovery and Care Through the Years by

Whether you spent your summer binging “Schitt’s Creek” in your basement or stress-walking around the neighborhood to escape the longest “sprummer break” that Kansas has ever endured, your skin and hair could use attention.

Board-certified dermatologist Meena Singh, M.D., with KMC Dermatology in Kansas City, Lawrence and Topeka, is here to provide guidance on what you should pay attention to and when to consult with a physician.

L: We know we need to check our skin regularly, but what exactly are we looking for and how often?

Singh: I recommend examining yourself once a month to see if there are any new lesions. Look at commonly exposed areas such as the face, neck, back of hands and arms for any spots that stand out, are new or are changing. Skin cancers that are not melanoma, such as squamous or basal cell carcinoma, often start as pink, scaly or raised spots that don’t heal. They can be itchy, burning, tender or bleeding. There are a number of benign lesions that might do the same thing, but unless you have an eye for the nuances, there’s nothing wrong with coming in.

L: Can skin cancer still develop if I use sunscreen regularly?

Singh: Most of the damage is done during our youth due to cumulative sun exposure over time. And getting in a tanning bed one time will increase your risk for melanoma by seven times; it’s a different wavelength of UVA light that’s more direct and goes deeper into the skin. There is no safe tanning bed, and it’s not worth possibly dying for a tan. Instead, get a spray tan or just be happy in the skin you have.

L: How long should I wait to come in if something catches my attention?

Singh: It depends on what you see, but if you have any of those symptoms, move more quickly. If it’s on the face and looks like a breakout, I would give it a couple of weeks because a rash from breakout should resolve itself. But if it’s still there after a few weeks, you should definitely come in.

L: What is the best way to track these changes in my skin?

L: What about female hair loss? What are the primary causes for this?

Singh: Genetics plays a huge role, but it’s all a combination of genetics, environmental factors such as hair dyes and systemic factors such as diabetes, thyroid conditions, hormonal abnormalities, medications or chemotherapy. The older you are, the more common it is.

Singh: We offer mole mapping where we take really good pictures of all of your moles so we can tell what’s changing over time. You can do that at home as well by taking really good pictures of your skin and your moles so you can track new spots.

L: Should we be checking our children too?

Singh: If there’s something that stands out (in young children), bring it to our attention, but you’ll definitely want to start bringing them in every year after puberty if they are moley individuals and if there is a first degree relative with melanoma.

L: Great … another thing to look forward to. Is it possible to reverse?

Singh: If it’s purely hair shedding and you can identify the inciting environmental or systemic factor, which is usually the case, then it should be temporary, and within 6-12 months you should be able to go back to what your normal hair cycle was. But if you have a genetic predisposition for thinning or female pattern hair loss, you may be able to improve the shedding, but you might not be able to go back to what you had before without proper treatment.

L: What can be done if the primary cause is genetics?

Singh: I always recommend some form of minoxidil, whether topical or oral, and something to block the hormonal influence of the hair loss. From there, I usually recommend some kind of growth treatment. We will do a hair transplant when hair doesn’t grow back from treatment, but the hair will usually grow as long as it would have grown from where we took it.

17 L: What are the best ways to prevent skin and hair damage?

Singh: Sun exposure causes mutations in the DNA in our skin cells, and it’s hard to reverse those mutations, but there is a supplement you can take called Heliocare that helps prevent sun damage to the skin.

Once your hair has grown from your scalp, there’s not much you can do about the composition of it. The best thing to do is not manipulate your hair as much as possible … use your fingers to detangle your hair instead of a brush, don’t use any heat or dyes, treat it like baby hair.

L: What about over-the-counter products that claim to combat hair loss?

Singh: If you’re worried about hair loss, don’t spend money on shampoos and conditioners that you immediately wash out.

It was the morning of Christmas Eve 2009 and our plans were set. In the late afternoon, we would make the one-hour drive to join in my family’s festivities and bring my mother home with us to spend the holiday. Frank’s mother and stepfather were 30 minutes away and would arrive around noon on Christmas day for a holiday lunch. On Christmas eve morning, it began to snow.

“Great,” I thought to myself, “we are going to have a white Christmas!” But … it continued to snow. And snow. It was coming down fast and getting deep, very deep. I checked the weather report. By late in the afternoon, it was official: We were having a blizzard.

All hope of traveling anywhere was dashed.

Unless you owned a team of dogs and a sled, holiday celebrations with out-of-town guests would have to be canceled. For us, it meant that Frank and I would be spending the holiday by ourselves. We thought, surely, there must be others who will be missing a Christmas meal with their families. We got on the

phone and made calls. There was Frank’s uncle, who couldn’t drive to another town to see his children, a dear, older friend who lived in a retirement community with no family nearby and a close friend who had just canceled her plans to attend a celebration out of town. They all immediately agreed to an impromptu holiday lunch at our house after we added, “We’ll pick you up and take you home.”

We set out on a carefully planned route, somehow avoiding icy streets and steep hills and, by meeting our guests at the end of their driveways, we got them safely to our table.

I recited the menu: fennel-roasted pork loin with peach sauce, crème fraîche mashed potatoes, pan-braised carrots and buttered green beans. The dessert, a classic chocolate custard, had been made the day before. I assured our guests that we would be dining in just over an hour. Everyone looked skeptical. Frank poured the wine to start the holiday celebration. I stepped into the kitchen and went to work.

Fennel-Roasted Pork Loin with Peach Sauce

Crème Fraîche Mashed Potatoes

Bittersweet Chocolate Custard

20 To expedite a meal quickly, an experienced cook knows it is important to prepare the “mise en place” which translates to “everything in its place.” In other words, prep and organize your ingredients before cooking. The small pork loin would easily feed us all and cook quickly. The pork is coated with crushed fennel seeds, which gives it a heavenly aroma and a slightly sweet, anise-like flavor. Next, it is browned in an oven-proof skillet and slipped into a hot oven for about 35 minutes. While it roasts, the side dishes can be prepared.

For the mashed potatoes, boil, drain and mash them in the same pot to keep them warm. Stir in crème fraîche, which adds a tangy richness to the dish, along with butter and warm milk. Cover the pot until ready to serve. While the potatoes are boiling and the pork is roasting, there is time to prepare a favorite, colorful vegetable – or two.

Braised carrots are a good match with pork and are easy to make. Simply place some slender carrots in a braising pan with water to cover them halfway, adding some fresh thyme leaves, butter, salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar. Cover the pan and simmer the carrots until almost tender. Remove the lid and continue simmering until the

water is absorbed and the carrots are lightly browned.

Green beans are a quick and easy side, too. Cook them in a pot of simmering water until tender-crisp, drain, toss with butter and season to taste.

When the pork comes out of the oven, let it rest while making a quick pan sauce with the pork drippings, a dry rosé and peach jam. Drizzle the sauce over slices of pork and the mashed potatoes, too. When it comes to dessert for a holiday meal, preparing it the day before is a huge timesaver. Chocolate custard is a favorite of all ages, and what could be more comforting on a cold winter day?

As I promised our guests, the meal was ready in just over an hour. We sat down to enjoy a lovely Christmas lunch and a fine bottle of wine. All of us were grateful to be together on a beautiful white Christmas. Even now, 11 years later, Frank and I often think of that special day when a surprising snowstorm brought unexpected guests to our table.

This year, with COVID-19 still with us, we don’t yet know how, or if, we will be able to share a holiday meal with our closest friends and family. Perhaps the recipes I prepared on that snowy Christmas day will be just the right menu to serve those who gather around your table.

Whatever happens, prepare to be surprised and enjoy the unexpected.

Fennel-Roasted Pork Loin with Peach Sauce Ingredients

Instructions

2-lb. center-cut boneless pork loin 1 ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper 1 tbsp. fennel seeds, coarsely crushed

Place the pork loin on a plastic cutting board and tie with kitchen twine to help hold its shape. Season with the salt and pepper. Press the crushed fennel seeds evenly into the meat.

Heat the oil in a stainless steel (oven-proof) skillet over medium heat. Add the pork loin and brown evenly on all sides, 6 to 8 minutes. Pour off most of the fat and discard.

Place the skillet with the pork loin, fat side up, in a 400 degree oven. Roast for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the meat registers 140 to 145 degrees for medium doneness. Transfer the pork to a cutting board and tent with foil, reserving the drippings in the skillet. The temperature will continue to rise while the pork loin rests. Place a handle cover over the hot skillet handle.

Peach Sauce: Skim off the accumulated fat in the skillet, retaining the juices and browned bits. Over medium heat, add the wine to the skillet and stir the peach jam. Add any accumulated juices from the pork. Simmer over medium heat, scraping up the brown bits, until the liquid reduces to ½ cup and thickens slightly. Off heat, stir in the butter. Cut the pork loin into thin slices and arrange on plates.

Spoon some of the sauce over each serving. Makes 6 servings.

2 tbsp. vegetable or canola oil Peach Sauce: ¾ cup rosé or dry white wine 2 tbsp. peach jam or preserves 1 tbsp. butter

Crème Fraîche Mashed Potatoes Ingredients

Instructions

2 lbs. Yukon gold or russet potatoes, peeled and diced 2 tsp. salt

Place the diced potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat and add 2 tsp. of salt. Boil the potatoes until they are tender.

Drain well and return them to the warm pot.

Heat the half and half and butter together in the microwave until warm. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher. Stir in the crème fraîche. Add as much of the warm half and half and butter mixture as needed to achieve the desired consistency. Season the mashed potatoes with salt and white pepper, to taste. Serves 6.

Bittersweet Chocolate Custard Ingredients

Instructions

2 cups half and half ½ cup sugar 4 oz. bittersweet chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and heat a pot of water to just below boiling while making the custard.

Heat the half and half and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until hot and steamy, just below boiling. Reduce the heat to low and immediately whisk in the bittersweet chocolate until completely melted. Remove the pan from the heat.

Place the egg yolks in a medium bowl and whisk until well blended. Stirring constantly, ladle some of the hot chocolate mixture into the egg yolks, a few drops at a time. If added too quickly, the eggs will curdle. Slowly add all of the chocolate mixture, stirring constantly. Pour the mixture through a fine, wire-mesh strainer into a 4-cup glass measuring cup to remove any curdled egg. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Pour the chocolate custard into 6 (4-ounce) ramekins. Cover the tops with aluminum foil and place them in a large baking dish. Pour in the hot (not boiling) water to a depth of 1 inch. Place in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. The custard is done when the center giggles slightly when gently shaken.

Carefully lift the custard cups from the hot water and place them on a wire rack. Remove the foil tops and cool. Serve warm, or cover and chill before serving. To serve, top each custard with a dollop of sweetened whipped cream and a strawberry.

I recently read a memoir by Victor Herman called “Coming Out of the Ice.” It’s about an American whose idealistic father signed up to bring about social utopia in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, right when Stalin was murdering millions of people. The author, who had a comfortable childhood in Detroit, spent 18 years in gulags. I don’t mean to downplay the misery of the moment, but most of us are doing a lot better than Herman in the 1930s, and he got through.

I love writers who know how to spin words, generate hope and create new ways of looking at things.

The air is turning crisp, the days are growing shorter, and while it may seem like the calendar should read March 193rd, it’s actually autumn in Kansas.

Or, as the fall faithful may call it: pumpkin time.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins were produced in the United States in 2017, making it one of our nation’s most popular crops. This variety of winter squash from the genus Cucurbita is one of the few varieties of produce that can be eaten inside and out, from seed and flesh to shell and flower. While they may be an autumn delicacy, they are actually considered a warm-weather crop and are usually planted in July for the fall harvest.

As much as I love the changing of the leaves and all that the fall season brings, I typically reserve pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving Day and am not usually one to seek out the traditional pumpkin spiced latte. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t turn down a hot PSL on a cool day (I’m not a monster), but if there is one thing the Internet has taught me, it is that there is a big, wide world out there, including an endless array of options to help us live our best pumpkin life. So I did a little exploring.

Whether you choose to drink it, eat it, carve it or smear it onto your face (more on that in a moment), let 2020 be the year you break out of your shell and experience this annual treat in a whole new way.

The Fight League of Women Voters Celebrates 100 Years of Progress

For 18-year-old Olivia Mitchell 2020 is a big and somewhat challenging year. The recent Shawnee high school graduate finished her senior year at a time when nothing seemed or felt normal. Now Mitchell is about to do something else that doesn’t feel normal, at least just yet, since she is now old enough to cast her first ballot.

“It makes me feel overwhelmed because it’s something I’ve never done before, and my vote really affects who the next president will be,” Mitchell says.

“It is something I have to start taking seriously since I’ve never looked at voting as a serious thing. I’ve never cared or wanted to care about politics and who

the next president will be.”

But Mitchell says those days of not caring are over.

With the social unrest going on in the world, mixed with inequality, hatred and the efforts of the Black Lives Matter Movement, Mitchell now understands more than ever that her vote matters. That desire to make a difference, to lead change and make an impact has fueled women for years.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

Sixth months before the historic move, the League of Women Voters was founded to help millions understand their responsibilities as a voter. Since then,

the organization continues to advocate for issues, monitor legislation and register voters. Even though Covid-19 stopped in-person visits, the League has continued to connect and empower women all over the United States, including here in Kansas.

Cille King was born in Whitewater, a small town outside of Wichita. She moved to Lawrence to attend college, and aside from a few years away while her husband served in the Navy, King has called Lawrence home ever since. Growing up, King says the signs of inequality were obvious, but her involvement in the change was not there.

“I didn’t like and wasn’t involved in politics when I

was young,” King says. “There were a lot of opportunities for boys: sports, Boy Scouts, freedoms that weren’t available for girls where or when I grew up.

Then there were other inequalities for women. Married women had to have her husband sign for credit cards – even K-tags – and contracts, limited access to reproductive choice, professions that discouraged women, limited access to higher paying professions, etc.”

Now in her fourth year serving as Co-President of the League of Women Voters of Kansas, King is committed to making sure women completely understand the change their voice and their vote can make CONTINUED P. 32 »

for this country.

“We continue to work to defend democracy and empower voters,” King says. “It is our most sacred civic responsibility as citizens of the United States to be informed voters and vote. Voting is the way that we retain our democracy.

Men and women have suffered and some have died for our right to vote.”

For King, it’s those ever-changing, breath-taking, life-changing moments in politics that keep her coming back for more. She notes there are times that stand out when seeing rights being denied (KS SAFE Act) and injustices put into law (KS HOPE Act), and then times “when our first African American President is elected or 2020 when we see the first woman of color as a Vice Presidential candidate on a primary ticket.”

“It seems to have taken forever,” King says.

“Women have progressed as far as we have through hard work, persistence and remarkable leadership,” Lee Ketzel says.

The soon-to-be-93-year-old Lawrence resident joined the League in 1949 after graduating college and moving to Washington, D.C. “One of my two majors at Middlebury College had been Political Science, so of course I was vitally interested in government. Also, the wife of one of my Middlebury professors had taken me to a League meeting during my senior year. I was practically eager to join,” she recalls.

Recently, New York’s Central Park unveiled statues Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth, some of the first women’s rights pioneers. While the unveiling is historic in its own right, Ketzel admits the work is far from over.

“We still do not have equal representation in Congress, and we have to be constantly on the alert to prevent steps to limit voting privileges for various trumped-up reasons,” she says.

Ketzel is now calling the election of 2020 possibly one of the most important in her lifetime because the candidates are so very different.

“I would implore all voters to get out early and be sure to vote this year,” she says. “You can use a mail-in ballot if you are afraid of the coronavirus, but please DO VOTE.” Katherine Ewing is originally from Lee’s Summit, Mo. The KU student says she has always had a passion for politics dating back to her elementary school days.

“I vividly remember coming back home and ranting to my parents at the dinner table about all of the historical injustices I had learned of in history class that particular day,” Ewing says. “I have always been very passionate about being an advocate for myself and others, which has translated into a passion for politics. Politics pervade every aspect of our lives, whether we like it or not. The best way to fight back at injustices that we experience in day to day life is to stay informed and politically engaged so we can effectively make change.”

Now Ewing is hoping that her passion for politics and work with the League will translate to change in the word.

“I want to empower my peers at KU and in the community to fully take advantage of our suffrage, which was not granted freely. While voter registration rates for young adults are increasing, they have so much more room to grow,” Ewing says.

While this election was already going to be critical to the future of our nation prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, this pandemic exacerbates every kind of inequity that pervades society already.

“In my opinion, who we elect in November will either be the beginning of our climb back to a new, more equitable status quo or the beginning of a deep dive into extremely unsettling waters,” Ewing says. “However, the turbulent times we are currently living in should be fueling our motivation to get out and vote for a more perfect democracy!”

History As we celebrate the 100th year of the woman’s right to vote, let’s remember that not every woman was able to vote.

Native Americans weren’t allowed to become citizens until 1924 with the Indian Citizenship Act. Voting rights for Native Americans was state by state, with the last state to give voting rights being Utah in 1962.

Chinese were under the Chinese Exclusion Act from 1882-1943, when they weren’t allowed to be citizens. It also varied by state. The first Chinese woman to register and vote was Clara Elizaveth Chan Lee in 1911 in California, which had passed voting rights for women.

The 19th Amendment says that “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” So, in some states (more often northern and western), black women could vote following the 19th amendment, or even

earlier if the state had ratified voting for women. However, just as the 15th amendment gave voting rights to black men and the 19th gave voting rights to women, the majority of blacks living in the Southern states were kept from voting when Jim Crow laws and the “Southern Strategy” were implemented.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 gave all citizens the right to vote. The 1965 Voting Rights Act was partially dismantled on June 25, 2013, with the US Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder. A key provision was removed that had required states with a history of racial bias in voting to get permission before passing new voting laws.

Just before the 2018 midterms, North Dakota’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of a new voting requirement that may prevent hundreds of Native residents from voting – a requirement for a street address and residence number.

Tattoo Artists Reveal Their World of Ink by

Origin stories for tattoo artists range from the unexpected to damnnear destiny. “Scary Carrie” was just 12 years old when she had this revelation.

“Back then, especially in my small town, it wasn’t considered a ‘real’ job,” she recalls. “But I had bought a tattoo magazine from a Harley Davidson shop, and the second I saw it, I knew. There was nothing else.

I was born to do this.”

Scary Carrie now owns Champion Tattoo Studio in Olathe with good pal Adam Hernandez, whom she met while working at Big Daddy Cadillac’s in Lawrence.

“I think he tried to ignore me,” she says of their beginnings. “But I will not be ignored. His only option was to be my friend.”

That tenacious personality was what ignited her big break at age 19, when a tattoo artist from her hometown – a professional she had persistently sought knowledge from throughout her teens – connected her to an apprenticeship.

“I left my parents, my boyfriend, my job and college and got in the car with total strangers to drive 24 hours to Marathon Key, Florida, and learn to tattoo,” she recalls.

Passion for their work is what keeps artists going in times of strife, whether it be the wrong fit of a shop or a global pandemic. COVID-19 forced businesses to adapt to a new way of doing things this year, but fortunately, tattoo parlors were already well-trained in warding off germs and preventing cross contamination. As Scary Carrie says, “That’s speaking our language! Done!”

The shops featured in this article have gone through immense measures to reduce risk, including Abraxas Tattoo in Lawrence, which restricts visitors, mandates masks, implements temperature checks and reduces contact through the use of separate rooms and entrances. Abraxas artists Emma Swendson and Erin Bratzler have even seen an increase in clientele.

“Honestly, I feel like I am busier than ever,” Bratzler admits.

Fana Garcia is glad her customer flow has shifted back to normal after losing her income when Mystic Addiction Tattoos in the Topeka NOTO Arts District temporarily shut down. She’s also grateful to again experience why she fell in love with tattooing. “I really like to vibe with (clients) and create a total chill, welcoming experience,” she says.

A few years ago, Garcia was a full-time nursing school student working in a pharmacy drive-in when a customer noticed the tattoos on her arm and mentioned the need for artists in a nearby shop.

An avid illustrator, she leapt at the opportunity to create for a career. After an interview and a run-through of her portfolio, she was hired for an apprenticeship.

but knows that adapting is just a part of the business. Technology is important in distanced society with the increased use of social media, website bookings and Zoom consultations. But this side of the business isn’t necessarily what attracts creatives.

Bratzler, for one, was raised in a world of artistically inclined women. One grandmother painted, the other sewed, and her mother was a Jill-of-All-Trades with skills in sewing, embroidery and cross-stitching. Bratzler’s adoration for drawing brought the Tulsa-born artist to the University of Kansas, and her yearning to create led to tattooing.

“I get to make art for a living, and it’s all I ever hoped for,” she says, but confesses there have been challenges along the way. “This industry, like many, is still very male-dominated. Other artists in the industry can be very misogynistic, as well as clients.

You will have clients that do not think you are as capable because you are a woman.”

While Abraxas is Bratzler’s first experience working with other female artists, Swendson considers herself lucky to have spent her career working in shops with a strong female presence. She says there’s an unmet need for more safe, welcoming spaces for women looking to get tattooed, and is grateful to be working in one of them. But she would rather the

focus be on the uniquely talented artists of Abraxas, not the fact that the shop is predominantly female.

“I’d like to live in a world where it’s not any more noteworthy than if the ratio was reversed.”

Scary Carrie says women have just as much opportunity to succeed in tattooing as men do.

“This industry judges its artists based on talent, skill, artistic ability and work ethic. Nothing more.

Respect is earned,” she declares.

Additionally, she loathes getting messages from potential clients saying they want her signature colorful designs because she’s a woman.

“I will never answer those, and I will never tattoo those people. How dare you choose me only because I’m female,” she says.

At the beginning of her career, Garcia felt like she was always working behind a man. She received opinions on her career path and appearance, particularly a condemnation that she doesn’t look like the typical tattoo artist – whatever that means.

“Like most things, we as women are questioned and challenged more for our skills and ability,” she says. “I soon realized how belittling many others can be, even in the art world.”

In response, Garcia exhibits her strength through humor.

Henna: A Tattoo Alternative It’s an ancient practice with therapeutic benefits, and it’s also just really really pretty.

Henna is a plant-derived dye used to temporarily tattoo the top layer of skin. V Heiland, owner of Essential Henna by V in Topeka, says it’s a great way to test a tattoo out.

“Henna is temporary; therefore, you can change the design and location with many endless possibilities. So I always encourage someone who is planning to get a tattoo – but is not so committed – to try out henna first,” Heiland says.

A painless alternative to the needle, henna also serves as an aromatic pampering experience due to essential oils used in the paste.

Heiland mixes her own recipe, ensuring that all ingredients are natural and safe.

So safe that Heiland donates decorative henna crowns to cancer patients who lost their hair from chemotherapy. The ornate designs bring them joy.

“I just love that moment of confidence it gives other women like it gives me,” Heiland says. “Once I have completed a design, I let them look in the mirror, and many times all I hear are words like, ‘incredible’ or ‘thank you’ or ‘that is beautiful.’ The clients just stare and smile.”

For clients with compromised health, and for pregnant women who want henna done on their belly, Heiland trades the typical eucalyptus oil she uses with a gentle lavender. She’s considering the intense eucalyptus smell and its cooling properties, the latter of which can feel strong on sensitive areas.

Heiland hopes her henna helps others

during difficult times like it did her. After moving from Mumbai, India, to Topeka as a child, she experienced culture shock, and found it hard to relate to other kids. That is, until she introduced them to her gift.

“To my friends, it was something new and different from what they had ever seen. From that moment, I realized that henna was a way to connect with others,” she says.

Heiland loves the creative freedom of freehanding her designs. She allows conversations with clients to spark inspiration.

“The best part is that they don’t want to see what I create until after it has been completed.

That truly makes me feel blessed,” she says.

Indo-Arabic and Indo-Western styles are Heiland’s specialty, although she offers any style, and continues to learn new patterns every day. She does henna for all types of events¬, including weddings, festivals, parties and corporate events but emphasizes that henna is for “any and all” occasions.

“My goal is to make it entertaining for my clients,” Heiland says. “I take time to educate them about the tradition and culture of henna. I am always thrilled when someone gets henna for the first time and they absolutely love the experience.”

She says, “Negativity can look at my cute butt as I walk its fine self straight to happiness and more fun experiences.”

Swendson – whose favorite tattoo on herself will “Forever and Ever, Amen” be a portrait of Randy Travis – is pleased to see some growth in society against antiquated ideas of women with tattoos.

“I gave my grandma her first tattoo the year she turned 80 – this would have been unheard of in the time and place in which she was sewing her oats,” Swendson says.

Judgment is not something these artists lose sleep over.

Garcia attests that she feels “cool as hell” when others stare. The stigma doesn’t get to Bratzler either, who acknowledges there will always be people who think tattoos take away from beauty, and employers who won’t want to hire because of ink.

“Luckily,” she says, “you don’t have to care what anyone thinks because it’s your body to do with what you wish.”

Being tough, working for what you want and making it happen is Scary Carrie’s recipe for success, along with an adaptability mindset to take on whatever comes her way.

But with all marvelous things, like an exceptional tattoo in microscopic capacity, greatness takes time and effort.

She heeds the warning. “This career will take you amazing places. It will give you everything. More than you ever dreamed of, but it is all-consuming; it comes before everything else, and sometimes, it will demand that you give up everything for it.”

When asked what they would advise their younger selves, the artists encourage compassion. Swendson wishes she would have learned to trust her judgment sooner, Bratzler accepts that she’ll never be done learning and Garcia reflects on being too hard on herself.

“The realization that with time, I will become better. It’s all about the practice and experience,” Garcia explains.

It’s a love for creation that keeps these artists inking pieces that will be part of someone as they journey through their own lives, with their own sacrifices and passions.

Swendson says the medium is unlike anything else: “The dimensionality of the human body, the way every ‘canvas’ is different than the last and the clients themselves, an amazing array of personalities from all walks of life who all have their own distinct reactions to being under the needle. …

It’s always a new challenge and endlessly entertaining.”

– Lakota proverb If you ever want to see this Lakota proverb in action, go visit the Tommaney library on the Haskell Indian Nations University campus. Librarian Carrie Cornelius is an expert at telling, showing and involving. Visitors at Tommaney will find a garden, students participating in poetry slams, a make and create art show, an Indigenous Language Collection Project and even a Native American Educational Drag Show. This isn’t your average library, and this isn’t your traditional librarian.

– Seneca proverb Cornelius went to school in Topeka. She was one of the four brown girls in a high school class of 260 kids. She at-

tended Haskell and the University of Kansas to get a degree in education. She did her student teaching in Albuquerque, then worked at a Navajo boarding school. Then, she landed her dream job at Red Rock Day School as a librarian. It was her first school where the meetings were held in the Navajo language, and the kids heard Navajo being spoken next to English. They were immersed in their culture and taught to be proud of it. This is where she realized she loved being a librarian. When students learned to love reading, she felt their delight seeing them finding their place in the world.

She received a Master’s in Library Science at Emporia State University. Her practicum centered around removing the racist literature that had become part of the children’s literature catalog, then building the collection to celebrate Indigenous people in their own literature. Upon graduation, she worked at Washburn University as a professor.

Like most, she had to go away to come home again.

She returned to Haskell to become the librarian. She decided to serve the people, starting by turning the facility into a home. Sonwai Wakayuta, a member of the Hulapai and Hopi tribes, and a Haskell student, says, “I used to come to the library to rest. I started making friends, utilizing resources and embracing curiosity. The library here is comfortable, so you can get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

Comfortable with being uncomfortable. Urged by Cornelius, a student named Baron Hoy set up a healing area in the library. He intended it for students to safely discuss things that are unsafe such as domestic violence and Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, or MMIW. It has become a central place for students to gather and discuss their pasts.

Cornelius says, “Service to others is the first step in healing the trauma one has experienced.”

She takes all new students to this area during freshman orientation to tell her story.

“I healed from being in an abusive relationship for 19 years. When I tell my story, I explain how I was able to survive it. I explain they are safe here,” she says.

There is cedar (for blessing and prayers) and sage (for protection and healing). Smudging (a means of energetically cleaning a location) happens often here.

In 1991, Cornelius heard a poet who was a teacher, a storyteller, a saxophonist and a vocalist. She worked hard to bring her to Haskell as a guest. Cornelius thought she was brilliant, and they remained in touch. She was inspired to bring her poetry to students whenever possible, and students to her. So much so that the library trips included traveling to Tulsa in a government van for poetry readings.

This poet was Joy Harjo, who was consecrated in 2019 as the country’s 23rd Poet Laureate. She was the first Native American to serve in that position. When Cornelius found out, she asked Harjo if she could come to the party. Her response? “Come and bring students.”

Cornelius took six women and two humanities professors from different nations to the ceremony. Each of them dressed in their tribal regalia, as proud as they could be to witness this historic event.

There is a tribal story named “Ponaka’azo” about an overprotective mother bear. It is a Kickapoo name given to Cornelius during a Potawatomi Naming Ceremony. When asked if she’s an overprotective mother to her students, she laughs and says, “I prefer to be the favorite aunt.”

Students who have had her as a librarian have been lucky.

Because what they’ve really had is a favorite aunt. She’s a librarian, to be sure, but she’s also an aunt teaching youth to find their voice and become storytellers. Maybe someday soon, their books will be in the Tommaney Library.

Knowledge is rooted in all things – the world is a library.

Growing up, we made many trips to the beach. I loved it.

And for good reason. Research shows that the positive effects of being near, in or on the water include lowering anxiety and stress, increasing a sense of well-being and happiness and lowering the heart and breathing rate.

Given our current climate, I thought now seemed like a good time to find out what our community has to offer.

Turns out, there are numerous resources for those who want to get out on the water.

First I spoke with Craig Pruett, owner of Up a Creek Canoe and Kayak Rental. His company manages floats on the Kansas River from Topeka to Lawrence. This year, he says, most trips have been on the lakes because of the high water levels.

Rentals range from $35 to $60. In the past, Pruett says they would meet and transport kayakers to their destination, but with Covid-19, they are finding most want to self-haul instead.

But the interest is there. Pruett says they hope to get on the Kansas River by mid-September. The season typically

runs through October, weather permitting.

For those interested in guided kayak adventures, Dirty Girl Adventures may be the perfect fit. Rent or bring your own kayak for adventures on Perry, Clinton or Lone Star Lake.

What began in 2014 has grown into a retail space at Compass Point, a venue for live music and classes and a women-only club that meets throughout the year. Owned

Selbee-Koch says they are seeing a good number of people out on the water. Taking precautions as needed and keeping everyone socially distanced and safe is paramount, and because kayaking is something that people of all fitness levels can do, she admits they are seeing a strong season for beginners and seasoned kayakers.

“Everyone wants to be outside,” she says. “Kayaking is something you can do alone or with friends and build great skills.”

There’s nothing like driving 45 minutes with wired friends from Kansas City to Lawrence in massive anticipation of watching a favorite underground artist play at the Granada. Only instead of seeing a concert, eyes are locked with the most gorgeous stranger on the planet and everything else falls away. Equally as binding are fingers caressing fingers by movie-light, Smallville coming to life as backdrop to finally holding hands with the person who just feels like the one. Then later, dinner out at that frequented restaurant in the square with the kids who are reminders that fate is real.

Entertainment is not mere camera, tunes, action, plates and forks. Venues where discussions of “Mule Bone” spark new beliefs and theme parks reignite parts of ourselves thought lost in the business of day-to-day being, they are invitations to connect, to engage, to build a life.

That connection has been severed in the

COVID-19 era. Concert halls, movie-theaters and restaurants where we bond are fighting for their lives, battling to remain a mainstay in ours. Three owners of businesses that shape our days share the effect pandemic closings have had on their slice of the industry, the attitudes of their valued guests and the march forward into reopening.

Jacki Becker has been in concert and events promotion since the glory of the grungy ’90s, ushering in indie acts to smaller venues such as Liberty Hall to bigger indie amphitheaters such as Providence (formerly Sandstone).

Bobbie Bagby of the Kansas-Missouri B&B Theatres works with movie-houses across the nation to save the very experience of moviegoing. And Cindy McClain is the queen of Independence Square, with 16 concepts from restaurants to billiards that have all been closed.

Touring is completely halted, where 75 percent of an artist’s income derives, venue capacity is at 20 percent, which is not financially feasible and digital substitutions just can’t serve the “gig worker.” Tour managers, production managers, bus drivers, merch sellers, lighting engineers and caterers are all people who drive across this great country and, right now, are struggling.

“We were the first to close, and we’ll be the last to open,” Becker says.

As movies creep back onto the big screen, critics are tempted to evaluate them by whether they’re good enough to risk your health to see. Bagby objects to this approach.

“Everything all of us are doing is a calculated risk,” she says.

This is not just an effort to reopen the theater, but to save the movie-going industry at-large.

With all 16 of her entertainment venues closed by late March, McClain understands hesitating to return to public venues. A mother of six and grandmother of six, she is not just a businessperson, she’s a person. During the shelterin-place, she yearned for normalcy, wanted to visit her chil-

dren and grandchildren, wanted to babysit and give them a break and wanted to resume their standing Friday night family dates. But it was dangerous. COVID-era became a period of fervent education and strategy.

“I see with all my industries how quickly COVID can come sneak through the back door,” McLain says. “If I’m not doing my due diligence, we’re never going to get back to normal. I’d rather do my part to do what is scientifically recommended rather than just my desires.”

Ophelia’s, her fine dining concept, was the go-to for experimenting with reconnecting with guests. With the executive chef and financial wing, McClain examined her portfolio to see which business could make a comeback by remodeling staffing, menus and operations. Meal-kits on Mother’s Day was a point in a successful direction. As she moves forward, she describes her development as “slow, cautious and intentional.”

What she thinks would strengthen the venue/guest relationship even more is if the average visitor understood just how costly COVID safety-measures really are. At B&B Theatres, they’ve fully subscribed to implementing stringent protocols. They’ve signed on with over 30,000 screens at cinemasafe.org, a COVID-19 responsive organization

designing rigorous, epidemiologist-cultivated procedures to keep the visiting public protected.

“We’re all in this together,” Bagby reminds.

Holding hands with small theaters, larger circuits and studios, B&B takes an orchestrated leap to save the editors, distributors, the farmer who grows the corn to pop all the way to the delivery-girl stocking the candies. If theaters can’t open, studios can’t give them good movies. And if the studios can’t give them good movies, theaters can’t open.

Though the economic impact is astronomical with one concertgoer representing purchased gasoline, a before-show drink, an after-show meal and a hotel stay post- too much fun, the culture of concerts makes Becker’s contribution to entertainment more difficult to access.

“You don’t rush a movie like you do a stage, and you can’t carry out a concert,” she says.

Because events are so immediate, visceral and primal, they are far from COVID-friendly. This is the key reason regenerating this part of entertainment is such a labor.

but even here security and sustainability are at question.

Audiences must become advocates. Saveourstages.com is the home of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) and where a petition can be signed to solidify support. Contact legislators. Without additional government funding, the ability to create this particular arena for sacred life moments may become a thing of the past.

“The United States is so gifted at entertainment. We deserve a solution,” Becker says.

Promoters continue to push. They work to help revise the pay model for artists, encourage ticketholders not to request refunds, hearten goers to purchase merchandise and if a concert just happens to be announced for 2021, buy a ticket.

All the players are communicating and being kind, so B&B Theatres is optimistic.

“Holy cow, does the rest of the year’s lineup look great, and everyone is going to want to go to the movies every week in 2021 because there are so many great pictures,” Bagby says. “If everything continues to hold and we curb this virus, wow.”

Pandemic Pregnancies Expecting during the unexpected by

There are moments in a person’s life that are so emotional, so tinged with meaning, so life-transforming, that they mark you forever. You can recall the precise shade of brown you were wearing when you saw the news about 9/11; the fizz in your soda still sings in your mouth every time you think of the moment that phone call changed your life; you can still smell the perfume you were wearing when your husband proposed. According to the APA Dictionary of Psychology, these moments are remembered in a flashbulb memory – a memory that is so complete in its detail that you have no reason to doubt you’ll remember it forever.

For many women, the strongest flashbulb memories come with a little blue plus sign at the end of a pregnancy test.

Realizing you’re suddenly going to be a mother, responsible for another human’s life, takes a lot of resilience. The changes women endure throughout this process are often frightening and sometimes painful, but each is tinged with a layer of amazement. Many women find there is no other period in their life quite as magical, emotional or rewarding.

However, when you compound the shock and awe of a new pregnancy with a global pandemic, you’ve got yourself quite the roller-coaster ride.

Unlike the clearly defined flashbulb memory of newfound motherhood, the oncoming pandemic arrived in a foggy crawl, tangling itself into our realities before we had a chance to realize what was happening.

COVID-19 has affected every piece of our existence, from social rules to dress codes; from normal workspaces to what we do in our free time. Every part of ordinary life that we took for granted has been skewed in some way, and we continually have to adjust our definition of what is considered “safe.”

“At first I didn’t think about the differences COVID-19 would make toward my pregnancy because, like many people, I didn’t think COVID-19 would be as serious as it turned out to be,” says Kelley O’Conor Morgan, an expecting mother and nurse at The University of Kansas Health System Marillac Campus.

O’Conor Morgan found out she was pregnant in January, allowing her to fully experience the joy that comes with impending motherhood without the concern of a national pandemic. However, as her pregnancy progressed, it didn’t take long for coronavirus to impact nearly every part of the process, including planning, doctor’s visits and the eventual delivery.

“Everyone has natural fears and worries in pregnancy, especially the first one, because there is so much unknown and so many factors outside of your control,” she says.

“The one thing that has made those worries better is the support from family and friends. COVID-19 however, has made it very hard to have the full support from family and friends that I otherwise could have.”

New hospital rules and regulations have made it difficult to feel supported during this time. Mothers are now required to endure these major doctor’s appointments alone, leaving them to experience procedures, such as ultrasounds, on their own. Left by yourself, you’re not able to share the moment with your husband or significant other, not able to strangle-hold their hand as you watch the doctor check to make sure every single body part is healthy, not able to share in that awestruck joy and fear and panic and amazement as the doctor announces the gender of the human being inside you.

Hospitals are doing the best they can with these requirements, allowing FaceTime calls to be made through appointments and making sure to print off plenty of pictures for you to show off. Medical staff are truly there to keep us safe, and these rules and requirements are set in place to help with that.

COVID-19 has changed our social dynamic, and

sometimes it can be difficult to cope with this new reality.

Pregnancy truly is a beautiful and overwhelming time of life, a time that is celebrated and should be shared. Social distancing has made it nearly impossible to carry out the traditional celebrations of a typical pregnancy, such as baby showers, visitations and photoshoots.

“To keep myself positive and sane, I continuously remind myself that it could always be worse and that what is ‘bad,’ such as the social distancing requirements, exist for a reason,” O’Conor Morgan says. “I try to restructure my thoughts if I get into a bit of a pity party about something, such as not being able to have the big baby shower I always envisioned, and remind myself what is important at the end of the day, and that’s my baby.”

Even in the toughest times, people find a way to rise above their circumstances. Through innovative solutions like drive-thru baby showers and virtual meetings, friends and relatives have found a way to be both safe and supportive. With companies such as Amazon, it’s easier than ever to have gifts sent to expectant parents. Though not ideal, situations can be transformed, so long as you keep a positive attitude about it.

“Take it one day at a time,” O’Conor Morgan says. “I think it’s okay to be upset that there are changes, but the best thing you could do is see the silver lining.”

The moments leading up to your due date move both fast and slow. On one hand, you consistently feel like you’ve been run over by a truck and can’t wait to actually meet the little person who has taken up residence inside of you.

On the other, you’re enamored with the kicks and wiggles, overcome by the closeness you feel to this person you’ve created. Sometimes it feels like that last thing on earth you want to do is extract your sweet little baby from his or her cocoon, especially with all the uncertainty in the world.

There are plenty of things to think about during any normal pregnancy. The pandemic, however, has taken questions from the previous era, like, “Should we allow visitors right after the birth or will we be too tired?” and altered them into questions like, “Should we allow visitors at all?”

With new restrictions come new adjustments. According to Sarah Vencel, not all of these changes should be considered “bad.” Vencel, mother of three, was able to compare and contrast the differences between preCONTINUED P. 56 »

For Vencel, the hardest part of the new rules within the delivery room was the restriction of visitors, including separation from her other young children, as they were not allowed to come visit in the hospital.

“Four days for a two-year-old is a long time, and they don’t understand exactly what’s going on,” she says.

Thankfully, she had friends and family willing to watch her other children while she was delivering her newest addition, although the situation was obviously not ideal.

Visitors are not allowed to come and go, which meant Vencel’s mother wasn’t able to come and swap places with her husband throughout her labor.

“My mom was there when we were having (my firstborn),” she says. “And that was good because it gave (my husband) a break.”

Vencel’s mom was able to run interference, taking over for her husband to, as Vencel put it, pay attention to her.

This time, however, it was Vencel and her husband alone in a room for three days.

There were a few silver linings, Vencel admits. You didn’t have to worry about hurting someone’s feelings as you chose who got to be involved in the delivery process.

After the birth, you weren’t overrun with visitors clamoring to meet the little one. This allows for a period of bonding time with the parents, a time that is often difficult to find in those first few days, with all the tests and transitions that take place after the baby’s arrival.

“As far as actual delivery, it didn’t really change anything,” Vencel admits. “You’re going to have a baby, regardless.”

Pandemic or no, a baby is delivered the same way, and Vencel found herself lost in the joy of bringing a new life into the world, not worried about all of the new COVID-19 rules and regulations.

Bringing the baby home is considered one of the most stressful and magical moments in a mother’s life. Oftentimes, you can’t help but question the sanity of the doctors as they send you away, completely in charge of this little

person. Especially now, when safety and hygiene are of the utmost concern, it can be difficult to determine the rules and regulations for visitors who want to come see the new baby at home.

“We are all overjoyed when there is a new addition to the family, but parents and visitors should consider that newborns do not have a strong immune system to fight off this novel virus,” says Dr. Jennifer Litwin, practicing OBGYN at St. Luke’s South Hospital in Overland Park. “It is strongly encouraged to limit contact as much as practical, as well as practice good hand hygiene. It is important to keep in mind initial COVID-19 symptoms may be minimal, however, they are equally contagious.”

Litwin recognizes that every situation is different, and because of the stress and uncertainty of these times, depression and anxiety is on the rise. Parents can choose to self-isolate but may find themselves longing for some familial support.

“Some parents may greatly benefit from additional support in the home,” Litwin says. “There are no hard and fast rules, but it is important to stay informed and safe as possible during this exciting time in your life.”

COVID-19 has changed a lot about day-to-day existence.

The only thing that is certain is there really is no right answer. Just like having a baby is a deeply personal experience, unique to every circumstance, so are the decisions you make to protect your child. Only you can decide what is best for your baby. Only you can learn to embrace the challenges. Only you can decide to look past the difficult regulations and frustrating situations to focus on what is truly important: a healthy new life.

“So many people have been forced to alter their plans,” O’Conor Morgan says.

What was your favorite Halloween costume and why?

“One of my favorite costumes was when I was 12 years old. My aunt helped me make a huge witch hat out of black poster board, and I put baby powder on my face. I thought I looked so authentic. Another favorite costume was recently. My teacher friends and I dress up every year, and this was the year Free State (High School) was under major construction. We carried a ladder through the hallways, and no one noticed it was us!”

“My boys have always loved Halloween, dressing up literally all year long in their superhero costumes. The clown costume was my favorite, and we really enjoyed dressing up the boys and trick or treating. It has always been a fun and fabulous holiday!”

Earlier that year, I went back to work outside the home, the girls were starting to get even more focused on all of their activities, and our son was entering his terrible threes.
