Letter from the Head of School Administrative Team 2019 – 2020

Dear Friends and Families, As we head into the 120th Anniversary Year at Tuxedo Park School, we can reflect on some of the milestones since our founding in 1900. In 1957, after occupying two houses in the Park, Blairhame became our home. Ten years later, in 1967, we opened the doors of the Primary School Wing, and in 2003, we completed the Middle School wing. Our great school has experienced many areas of growth, but one thing remains constant – the overwhelming support from the TPS community.

This support has provided our students with an excellent education in a safe yet challenging learning environment for 120 years. It has also given our skilled faculty many opportunities to grow. Through professional development, our teachers continue to learn and to share their passion with our students. Our community of “givers” – board members, donors, parents, volunteers, faculty, students and alumni – remain committed to acting on the belief that we all must pitch in and work together to give our children an outstanding education.

We have a lot of exciting work ahead of us. Our main focus is to provide our students with the excellent educational experience they deserve. We are committed to using proven educational approaches while embracing new strategies helping to equip our graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a rapidly changing world. Small class sizes provide our students with the opportunity to develop, not just intellectual skills, but values and traits that will ensure that they are confident leaders who are kind, fair and responsible, and therefore, exceptional citizens of the world.

At Tuxedo Park School, our faculty encourages students to ask questions, seek to understand complex issues from multiple perspectives and work collaboratively to solve problems. Our community support helps us create new opportunities for learning and for generating new skills to gain knowledge, continuing our legacy of nurturing children so they can explore and discover their passions in life. Your support allows us to develop a college preparatory curriculum and a strong character education program which, guided by our mission statement, encourages students to serve as stewards of our local and global communities. We are truly creating kind, fair and responsible citizens.

Time and again, when guests visit our campus, they tell us our school’s culture of trust and kindness is palpable. They see in students and faculty a special joy in simply being here, a deep respect for one another and a love of learning. We all give in the best ways we can to make our community strong. And, in turn, for decades our students have grown to understand that giving, in its many forms, is key to being a complete person.

As we move through the 2019-20 academic year, we will continue to preserve the rich history and traditions our community values so greatly. We will also continue to embrace new educational strategies through our academics, athletics, arts and extracurricular activities to ensure our students thrive and prepare to be leaders in the world.

Message from the President of the Board of Trustees “Tuxedo Park School is a very special place.” I heard this phrase many times from then-current parents when I was looking for the right school for my children. Once we enrolled our children at TPS, we began to feel it too. What was it exactly? What makes this school so special?

I have thought about this for some time, and I think I may have found my answer: it is all of you. Outstanding faculty who know and celebrate each student; caring parents who engage and volunteer; alumni families who stay connected; current and former trustees who give in so many ways – it is our community that makes Tuxedo Park School special. The meaningful connections and friendships formed here, our commitment to excellence, our appreciation of all that is kind, fair and responsible – it is our shared TPS experience and this community that sets TPS apart from the rest.

The 2018-2019 Annual Benefit, La Carte Blanche, was a spectacular celebration of Tuxedo Park School and our special community. The emotion and energy that evening was palpable. Generations of TPS families, teachers, alumni, trustees, and friends of the school came together to support TPS and honor our Spirit of Philanthropy recipients, Serene and L. Philip Swirbul. It was a beautiful event, a testament to the Swirbul family and Tuxedo Park School, and a reminder that we are all part of something very special.

Members of the Tuxedo Park School community have been dedicated and generous supporters of TPS for decades. As far back as 1905, parents came together to purchase the house that was Tuxedo Park School’s first home. The school’s present home, Blairhame, was a gift from Joan Blair Overton in 1957. Two years later, devoted parents started a ski and uniform swap (which eventually grew into “The Almost New Shop”) which raised significant funds for the school’s library and other initiatives. Passionate parents joined together to raise funds for the school’s first playground, which was dedicated to the memory of Louise Shepard upon its completion in 1987.

In more recent years, your gifts have continued to enrich the TPS experience for students and teachers: innovative curriculum through the KMAC lab, investment in and support of our extraordinary faculty through Professional Development, and the restoration and revitalization of Blairhame. Recent gifts to the Blairhame Restoration Fund have enabled major renovations of the Dining Room, Main Foyer, the Primary School Gym’s stage, lighting and sound systems, as well as the modernization of the Vera G. Brigham Library. Thanks to your continued generosity, the Art Room and Arts program at TPS are next! None of this is possible without your generous support.

In September, TPS began its 120th year. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all who have come before us to create the special culture of this school and this community. Thank you to each of you for your incredible generosity and continued commitment to TPS. Thank you for the gift of Tuxedo Park School.

Welcoming New Board Members Elizabeth Gunnison Dunn ’98 Liz, who has recently joined the TPS Board of Trustees, is a journalist whose work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Businessweek, Esquire, Entrepreneur, The National and the websites of The New Yorker and The Atlantic, among other publications. After attending TPS for primary and middle school, Liz completed grades seven to 12 at Hackley School in Tarrytown. She holds a degree in the history of art from Yale University, where she served as a writer and then an editor at the Yale Daily News. Liz currently lives in Manhattan with her husband and two young sons, who both attend St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s, an independent Episcopal day school in Morningside Heights.

K.C. Petillo-Decossard K.C. Petillo-Decossard is a partner at Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP where she leads the firm’s M&A practice and co-chairs their Business Development Committee. K.C. received her undergraduate degree from Furman University where she played Division 1 softball, and her law degree from Albany Law School. In addition to her service on the TPS Board of Trustees and serving as a TPS class parent, K.C. also serves on New York-Presbyterian’s Leadership Council on Children’s and Women’s Health and the Dean’s Leadership Council at Albany Law School. She lives in Monroe with her husband, Sakis, three children – Dominic (TPS Class of 2028), Natalie (TPS Class of 2030) and G.G. (TPS Class of 2030) – and their English bulldog, Lazee.

Dawn Angney Kress Dawn worked at Nabisco Foods and Automatic Data Processing for nearly 25 years in finance, business planning, market research and strategic marketing. She retired to become a full-time volunteer and health advocate for her son, JT, who underwent a kidney transplant last fall. JT has been at Tuxedo Park School since Pre-K3 and is now a rising 6th grader. Dawn’s volunteer efforts are varied and include work at TPS, Bonnie Brae, a home for young men and boys in crisis, the Sloatsburg Food Pantry and the Vermont Mountaineers. Dawn has a BA in Economics from Williams College and an MBA in Finance from Rutgers University. She lives in Ringwood, NJ, with JT and her husband, George.

Parents Association Each of our families play a vital role in helping Tuxedo Park School fulfill its mission of providing children with an exceptional education.

Educating a child requires a village, and every family is welcomed at TPS as a partner in this process. TPS parents, along with an exceptional faculty and a supportive administration and staff, have helped to ensure our students receive the best possible education in an environment that is conducive to inspirational thinking, innovative learning and subject facility.

This year, our PA decided to make “Teacher Appreciation” an all-year event, as opposed to just one day. Led superbly by parent Suzanne Ewing, teachers and staff were treated to monthly surprises, including tables filled with treats in the faculty room and fridges stocked with goodies.

Themed days included Empanada Day, National Wear Brown Shoes Day, when we were treated to every imaginable kind of brownie, and National Toothache Day, when the faculty room transformed into an old-fashioned candy store.

During the holidays, the PA fairies gave each staff and faculty member a gift card which elicited these responses: “Thank you so very much for your most generous holiday gift and for your kind words. I absolutely love teaching at TPS. Teaching your children and being part of such a dynamic community are blessings in my life! Happy New Year, and again, thank you.”

“Thanks so much for the gift card and even more for the support you give the faculty all year. Best wishes for a wonderful 2019 to you all.”

The faculty are incredibly grateful for all the appreciation poured on them throughout the year.

Annual Fund, Special Gifts and Raise Your Paddle Since the founding of Tuxedo Park School in 1900, faculty, families and friends of the school have worked hard to create and maintain a high level of academic excellence, a spirit of competitiveness and a core value of kindness.

In her Salvete speech, Alice Gleybman ‘19 expressed what it means to be a TPS student: “ ... we understood that we were here for more than just learning ... we built memories like a family ... “ We see endless examples of student kindness and support of each other throughout the halls and on the fields. In this year’s annual mile run, one student, who was just a few months post a kidney transplant, struggled to complete the course. Without hesitation, his friends ran to join him. Shortly after that, a few more students joined in. In no time at all, the entire school was at the student’s side building his confidence to the finish line. To say there was not a dry eye on Shepard Field is an understatement!

As we look forward to the new school term and the celebration of our 120th year, we are grateful to this community for your outstanding support through the years.

Your generosity enables our students to immerse in a rigorous academic curriculum, benefit from a robust character education and compete in numerous Green and Gold competitions throughout the year. TPS students learn in an atmosphere that is both encouraging and supportive.

Perhaps this is what Jake Shepard ‘73 acknowledged when he created the school motto: Disce Duc Animo Mente - Learn and Lead with Mind and Spirit.

Your part in helping us to grow well-educated and caring people is invaluable and necessary.

TPS Thrives with Some Help from Our Friends Whole Foods Garden Grant Thanks to a grant from the Whole Foods Kids Foundation, the TPS science department expanded the garden curriculum to include more students spending more time learning sustainability. An investment in some rich nutrisoil allowed students to study its microbiology and observe and measure the outcomes firsthand.

In further study, an eco-club was formed giving students the opportunity to learn additional aspects of gardening, including composting and recycling. Some local restaurants were the glad recipients of the garden’s bounty. Next year, we hope to extend this outreach to local community food kitchens. Thank you, Whole Foods!

Orange and Rockland STEM Grant For the past few years, the science and technology departments at TPS have been the recipients of a $1,000 STEM grant from Orange and Rockland Electric Company. Every year, O&R generously offers these grants to the community in support of classroom projects and initiatives“designed to improve, advance and enrich student learning.”

O&R grants have enabled TPS students to make full use of our KMac Lab, a makerspace, and TPS students have benefitted from varied classes, including an “It’s Electric” project, which combined a traditional educational approach in electrical science with new technology and real-world application and problem-solving.

Other projects have included a study of alternative energy. Students turned everyday objects into touchpads using MaKeyMaKeys, made a bicycle electric generator and a drip irrigation system for our sustainable garden. Through the O&R grant, TPS teachers can create a new stream of learning, bringing together music, art, technology, invention and electrical science.

Now and Forever Society In celebration of Tuxedo Park School’s rich traditions and commitment to academic excellence, the Now and Forever Society has been established to recognize donors who have included Tuxedo Park School in their estate planning.

The Now and Forever Society offers our community a variety of ways to make a meaningful gift to TPS while achieving possible income tax and estate tax savings. Donors may choose to name the school in their will or perhaps name TPS as a partial or complete beneficiary of a revocable trust, a retirement plan or a life insurance policy. Faculty Farewell Mrs. Emelene Bark Mrs. Emelene Bark left TPS after teaching here for three years to relocate closer to her family in Canada. As one of our beloved Pre-K teachers, she was instrumental in developing student-centered and developmentally appropriate learning in our early childhood program.

Ms. Kristen Heard After 13 years as Director of Admissions and Secondary School Placement, Ms. Kristen Heard has headed west for an exciting opportunity at Emerald Mountain School, an independent school in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Her new school will benefit significantly with Kristen leading their admissions and development program as they begin a new effort to increase their enrollment and expand their community. TPS was the beneficiary, for many years, of Kristen’s entrepreneurial spirit, can-do attitude, and devotion to building relationships – just a few of the characteristics that made her an asset to TPS. Every family at TPS is here because of the role Kristen played. We are grateful for her commitment to TPS families throughout her tenure here and we wish her the best of luck in the next part of her school journey. She will be missed by the Tuxedo Park School family.

Mrs. Tiffany Kelly After four years at TPS, Mrs. Tiffany Kelly has chosen to pursue her passion for literacy instruction across multi-grade levels. She began her TPS teaching career in Pre-K and then in kindergarten and is known for creating a classroom environment filled with warmth and a joy for learning.

Ms. Jennifer Rossano After six years at TPS, Ms. Jennifer Rossano has moved to a school closer to her neighborhood. We are thankful to Jen for her care in the classroom and for creating a strong-knit community where students felt safe to take risks. Each of her students felt known and appreciated as she took the time to really get to know every child in her classroom.

Mr. Drew Scecina Mr. Drew Scecina spent two years as one of our MS and US math teachers. He also guided our golfers as head coach and established the afternoon discovery program, Good Morning, Tuxedo Park. La Carte Blanche was a terrific event for TPS – a sold-out, packed-tothe-rafters evening in honor of Phil and Serene Swirbul and their lives of service to TPS and the greater community.

We owe much of the evening’s success to the ladies who planned and executed it under the leadership of chairs Jennifer DuBrul (Lili ’18 and Liesl ’20) and Katrina Cunningham (Teagan ’14, Aidan ’18 and Reyna ’19). From the magnificent décor to the fabulous service at The Tuxedo Club, everything was perfect!

Susan and Hank Christensen (Tim ’95, James ’97 and Anne ’01), longtime friends of Phil and Serene, spoke lovingly of the impact this couple had on all around them.

In every detail, they and their love for TPS provided the inspiration as our volunteers prepared for this special evening. Serene, never one to shirk from helping, became a guiding light. Those who gathered to honor Serene and Phil Swirbul, and to support our school, were delighted that this very special couple were being recognized.

Perhaps the Swirbuls are one of the reasons why Tuxedo Park School is one of those rare environments where no one says, “that’s not my job.”

As former Head of School Andrew McLaren noted: “It would be hard to imagine TPS without Phil and Serene. They both always represented the highest level of unselfish commitment to the institutions they held dear, with a unique blend of devotion, kindness and high good humor that one just felt grateful to be around.”

To that end, we’d like to thank all of our parent volunteers who helped us create this event from start to finish.

Spirit of Philanthropy Award Phil and Serene Swirbul Phil and Serene moved to Tuxedo Park in 1968 and quickly became involved in many aspects of the community as parents of young children.

According to their son, Philip, the Park was an excellent fit for them and their family. Over the years Phil was an enthusiastic member of the Tennis Committee at The Tuxedo Club before moving on to the Board of Governors, eventually serving as chairman. He followed a similar arc at St. Mary’s Church, where he was active in a number of roles before serving as head of the vestry. The third area of his involvement was TPS, where he was first engaged as a parent of four boys. His undeniable talent, dedication, and good humor, led to his service on the TPS Board of Trustees before he eventually assumed the role of Board Chair.

Serene has also been very active in all three of these institutions. She is a tireless and dedicated volunteer for the Tuxedo Park Garden Club. She is, and always has been, a caring, devoted, and reliable “doer” who to this day continues to volunteer her time and services regularly and with great cheer. Whether it involves organizing, decorating or just being present, she exemplifies the ideal of volunteerism.

At the annual school benefit this year, we were honored to recognize the work of Phil and Serene for Tuxedo Park School and the greater community. Susan and Hank Christensen’s words of recognition at the benefit are a testament to the devotion that Phil and Serene Swirbul invoke amongst their friends.

Susan and I are humbled to have been chosen to recognize Phil and Serene Swirbul for the TPS Spirit of Philanthropy Award.

They have been our role models, our inspiration, and eventually our good friends over the past 40 years. They are part of the essence of Tuxedo and of Tuxedo Park School, and what a treat it is to be the ones to say so!

I was privileged as a trustee of TPS to meet and serve with dozens of the most intelligent, generous, and imaginative people I have met in my life.

In 1983, I was somewhat surprised to receive a call from Phil Swirbul suggesting I might become a trustee of Tuxedo Park School. Over the years that followed, Phil and Serene introduced Susan and me to the world of independent education and, more importantly, to volunteerism and philanthropy. That’s when they became our role models.

When Phil ran a board meeting, he made sure everyone had a voice. He never forgot that everyone else in the room was a volunteer, and he was deeply respectful of the time, talent and treasure that they were devoting to TPS. Phil made sure everyone was on board and ready to move forward and ready, as he would say, “to raise the level of play.”

TPS aspires to create life-long learners, and Phil and Serene are Exhibit A in that world. Phil was an avid reader of history and took joy in directing others to some new book that better explained a historical event or an era. He loved this country and its history, and he very much wanted every TPS student to know and love it as well.

He was board president for five years, a trustee of TPS for about 15 years, and an invaluable mentor and resource for decades after. Their son Philip came back to TPS as a teacher and then served as a TPS trustee of for five or six years.

And that’s what Phil and Serene did, and Serene still does today. Today, about 50 years after Phil first became a trustee, Serene is a TPS trustee. Phil and Serene were a team, a winning team. Philanthropy is the love of mankind or devotion to the community. No one has loved TPS and its community more than the Swirbuls, and no one deserves the TPS Spirit of Philanthropy Award more than they do.

In 1985, Phil passed the baton to me, and Phil was asked to give the graduation address for Jason Swirbul’s class. I remember asking him what in the world he was going to speak about and he said, “competitive sports.” I remember a silent, internal groan, thinking about this very competitive tennis player and serious sports fan. I imagined his talk would involve lots of talk about tennis tournaments. That is not what happened. Instead, what Phil said to Jason’s class was something that should be repeated to every graduating class — that competition is what makes the world go round, and what’s important about competition is not that you won a contest, or lost a contest, but that, if you truly competed, it meant that you had challenged yourself to give it your best. You would always come out ahead for having challenged yourself. That’s what you have to do, always, in everything you do.

Benefit Tuxedo Park School Knows Art is Imperative Great art, much like the education at Tuxedo Park School, is an independent expression of rich tradition and creative innovation. A recent study performed by the William Penn Foundation discovered that the study and practice of such art can promote self-directed learning, as well as sharpen critical and creative skills.

TPS art teacher Megan Sweeney has developed a curriculum to capture these benefits through a wide variety of mediums, subject areas and thoughtfully-designed projects.

Over the last 15 years at TPS, Ms. Sweeney has developed a program that is designed to engender inspiration, foster pride and engage each student in a life-long love of learning.

“The curriculum I use comes from all kinds of triggers and most times ideas are generated from a discussion with students,” said Ms. Sweeney. “They are chock full of good ideas and not usually shy about sharing them!”

Megan Sweeney is TPS’s artist in residence. When not working in the classroom, she can be found firing her ceramic designs and curating her own shows, drawing her inspiration by observing the world around her and channeling her instinctive drive for creation to form her lessons and assignments.

“The painting and drawing lessons, as well as many other projects, come from museum shows; pictures in periodicals; newspapers; children’s books; events in the news; holidays we celebrate; holidays from around the world; or questions posed by the children,” explained Ms. Sweeney. “It’s this variety of perspectives that lends itself to a diverse education, not only in art concepts and techniques but personal growth and adaptation.

In a single assignment, the students will come across many art concepts and techniques.

In these lessons, there are the life skills of planning, adaptation and adjustment, which we all need heaping helpings of to get over hurdles in our lives ahead.”

This educational strategy, however, is possible because of the remarkable insight and passion Ms. Sweeney maintains year after year.

“For me art is exciting because of the many avenues, tangents, concepts and ideas we encounter when we make it. Why bore myself or my students with the same old dusty projects year after year when we can both have the excitement of exploring new ideas and learning new things?” she explained.

This year, TPS supported Ms. Sweeney’s art curriculum with the Raise Your Paddle event at the benefit, La Carte Blanche, which partially focused its fundraising for the art room.

The raised funds will enable TPS and Ms. Sweeney to update the current space with new countertops, child-height sinks, improved lighting and storage, enhanced art materials and visiting artists. We look forward to more beautiful creations in the classrooms and on the walls of TPS!

For many of our students, TPS is a home away from home, the place where you feel loved and accepted, and where everyone knows your name. The road traveled from Pre-K 3 to 8th grade is a journey filled with countless memories and strong friendships. Our graduates end their time at TPS by completing the circle in the Pamela McLean Graduation Garden and move on to new schools, new adventures and new friendships. Our Freshmen also leave us for new experiences, having completed their 9th grade year. Their class, consisting of Aidan and Piper, was small but mighty! We send them all off with pride and in the hope that the piece of TPS that fills their hearts on graduation will remain there. TPS will always be their home.

Class Notes 1944 Lovely to hear from Eben Richards who tells us: “It is a long time since I graduated from the Tuxedo Park School which was then located in a small building at the foot of Tower Hill.

There were only three graduates in that class, Mary Gillis Chisholm, Jack Lummis and myself!

Mary Gillis is now living in Tampa, Florida, I am still living at home in Orange, Virginia, and I have long since lost track of Jack Lummis.

Does anyone know where he is? Mary Gillis and I stay in touch by phone or e-mail every month or so. I am now 89 years old and have had two minor heart operations. I still hope to make it into my 90s. However, it is no longer possible to do all the work I used to do in this place, but I enjoy watching all the new Black Angus calves born in my fields every year. I am no longer the president of the hound club.

That office is now much better performed by younger more active members. Chris Sonne was about the last of my old friends who was still living in Tuxedo. I am lucky to have made some new friends there, but it is not quite the same thing. With them, I cannot say, ‘Remember when we did...?’ Thank you for sending all the information. I always enjoy reading of all the activities at the school.”

1963 John Gay, Jr., a former Gold Team Captain has some memories of his year leading the team: “I will always remember the sense of ‘belonging’ to the team and the importance of good sportsmanship, whether we won or lost. The tug of war was my favorite challenge.

Getting all participants to pull on command at the same time was always a problem! So many groans and laughter too.”

1965 1961 We recently heard from Benson Bobrick, who just finished writing another book, Returning From Afar: A Memoir. His long and distinguished career in writing has spawned a treasure trove of history books and he has been called “perhaps the most interesting American historian writing today” by The New York Times. In 2002, he received the Literature Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His 14 books, including two national best sellers, have been featured on the front page of The New York Times’ Sunday Book Review, as main and alternate selections of the History Book Club and the Book-of-theMonth Club. Benson’s work has been widely praised in both academic and popular journals and published in sixteen different countries.

He has reviewed books for The New York Times and The Washington Post, and has been interviewed on the “News Hour” on PBS, NPR’s “Fresh Air” with Terri Gross, as well as the CBS Morning Show. We hope Benson will come pay us a visit at TPS soon. Meanwhile, we can tuck into the pages of his memoir now available on Amazon.

Michael Brauer’s ambition, according to the 1965 yearbook, was to be a veterinarian.

The record business benefitted from that unfulfilled desire because Michael went on to be one of the finest mix engineers in the recording business, earning his first big break from Luther Vandross and then Aretha Franklin. Today, Michael has his own studio in Manhattan, BrauerSound Studios, and has won seven GRAMMYs to date, including one for Coldplay’s Alternative Album of the Year, Parachutes. Other artists whose work has benefitted from Michael’s mixing skills include Tony Bennett, John Mayer, Hootie and the Blowfish, Slash and the Courteneers. The Class of 1965 had its fair share of talent. Mark Sebastian, a classmate of Michael’s, wrote the words to Summer in the City, a song recorded

by John Sebastian, (Mark’s brother), and his group, The Lovin’ Spoonful.

1958 George Howard, who paid us a visit in April along with his friend, Cassie Root, was delighted to see the school again. He regaled us with many schoolboy stories. Having spent the previous evening at The Tuxedo Club, they tuxedoparkschool.org I page 30

1973 Michael Obolensky, along with his sister Alexa ’74, came to the TPS Benefit in April to show support for and honor the Swirbul family,

with whom they were very close growing up.

Michael was happy to pose on the infamous ‘bench’ which he claims to have warmed more than a few times in his days at TPS!

1986 Seth Fleisher stopped by TPS for the first time since graduating in 1986. He brought his wife, Emily (a psychiatrist), and sons, Miles (15) and Jonah (12), to check out his old haunts and reminisce over the school’s amazing photo archive. His whole family, including brother Mike Fleisher (class of 1988), lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where Seth runs a boutique international development consultancy that focuses on empowering women entrepreneurs and building the capacity of small businesses in emerging markets. Before his stop at TPS, he spent an afternoon with old friends Ray Javdan ’86 and Mark Feiner ’87. Among their many escapades, Seth, Ray and Mark spent the summer after high school traveling around the country in an old L’eggs pantyhose van — a Kerouak-style quest for the late 1980s!

1978 Peter Richardsson and his brother Richard grew up racing Flying Juniors on Tuxedo Lake in the 70s, but in June he competed in his first Newport-Bermuda Race. Racing a board Lola, a J130 owned by Jon and Katy Burt, he left out of the Quissett Yacht Club in Falmouth, MA. The 635-mile ocean race is hosted by both the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. The 51st running of this biennial race featured over 170 entrants. Peter, one of six rookies of the nine-man crew, served as the Engineer. Although Lola finished last in the St. David Light Division, Class 9, all 12 yachts in the class finished within four hours of each other over the four-and-a-half-day race; a testament to great yacht handicapping. Peter was joined in Bermuda by his wife, Kate, his sons, Henri and Ted, his brother Richard ‘79 and his mother, Mrs. H. Edward “Joan” Alleman.

1994, 2000, & 2005 Thanks to alumni mom Andrea Bierce for keeping in touch with us and sharing news of a trip that she took with her two daughters, Cameron Bierce Hume ’94 and Jenny Bierce ’05. “The attached photo is from our trip to Santiago and Patagonia. The girls went on several difficult hikes in Patagonia. Their first hike was 18.5 miles and the equivalent of 775 flights of stairs ascended and descended!

We stayed at the beautiful Patagonia Camp, which we would highly recommend. The food, the wine and the views were incredible!”

Nakima Benjamin tells us, “I currently live in New York City where I work in the fashion industry with a focus on brand management and business development. I still enjoy running as well as hiking and traveling. My most recent trip was to Portugal where I had a blast.”

Sean Thomas has always enjoyed getting the most from life and since his days at TPS, he has immersed himself in higher education. He is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy in New York State and the president of Be More Today, a fitness company geared toward educating and inspiring others to always stay on the move. A native of Harlem, New York, Sean grew up in the Hudson Valley and following graduation from TPS and Choate Rosemary Hall, Sean attended Brown University. His book biography tells us that Sean is ‘an avid lover of life. He aspires to Be More each day by trying new experiences and facing new

Class Notes 2007 Lauren Gorab recently graduated from Fordham University School of Law. After taking some time for rest, relaxation and exploration in Europe this summer, Lauren will start a one-year Judicial Clerkship for the Honorable Claire Cecchi in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey in Newark. Following this, Lauren will work for White and Case in New York as a litigation associate.

Kaitlyn Swingle just made the move back north from Washington D.C. and started a new position as a senior account executive, partnership activation for the New York Yankees, working in the Corporate Sponsorships Department.

2011 When Sarah Laico decided to run the LA Marathon to bring attention to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation For Childhood Cancer, she took it very seriously and began her training by running at a high altitude in Colorado, January through March. Sarah tells us: “I ran the marathon over my spring break in 3 hours, 44 minutes and 50 seconds — an 8-minute, 35-second per mile pace. The race was awesome — lots of downhill, traveling through all the LA neighborhoods, including Hollywood, ending at Santa Monica pier.

It was a perfect, 70-degree sunny day and I was ecstatic to break 4 hours in my first marathon, having run 4 half marathons prior.”

Congratulations Sarah. This is quite a feat and for a great cause!

2009 Kazuma Engelkemeier, who we recently connected with, gave us a brief update on his life after George Washington University. “I’m currently a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps having graduated The Basic School in Quantico last September. I’m currently stationed in Pensacola, Florida, for flight school. I don’t have many pictures of me in uniform, but I have attached a picture of me and my Marine ground school classmates at ‘Flight Suit Friday,’ when the graded portion ends, and students earn their flight suits. The static display behind us is a real (former) Blue Angels aircraft!” That’s what we call reaching for your dreams. Safe flying, Kazuma!

2012 Christofer Harper tells us, “This summer I interned for NASDAQ in business development working on mergers and acquisitions, corporate strategy and alternate data aggregation. I loved being in New York and I’ll be returning there full-time next July after graduation from Villanova where I am working on a dual major in finance and data analytics. My sister, Courtney ’14, and I both love Villanova. Winning the tuxedoparkschool.org I page 32

NCAA Basketball Championship in 2018 and taking great classes with incredible professors have been some of my highlights!”

Matthew Baker is currently studying journalism at Binghampton University where he also runs track. As if that doesn’t keep him busy enough, he is also designing some affordable men’s clothing and writing a blog about it. You can read all about it at www.bakersrebellion.com.

Jamie Flynn, who is finishing her senior year at the University of Vermont, intends to attend graduate school next year for athletic training.

She is currently completing courses to be an EMT to help pay for the next leg in her educational journey. Mom Rita says: “Both girls were given incredible opportunities at TPS where they were embraced, loved and supported. You know I will always be grateful that they had an opportunity to attend such a magical place!”

2015 Ava Desiderio has not been a stranger in the halls of TPS in recent years, as her brother Francesco ’19 was still a student here. She has been very busy both with academic work and dancing, as she told us: “I recently graduated from the Professional Children’s School while simultaneously studying with Ballet Academy East. This summer, I will attend the Royal Ballet School four-week summer intensive before returning to New York in preparation to leave for Miami City Ballet School winter term, starting in early September. I have also accepted and deferred my placement at Mount Holyoke College for one academic year, where I will be studying biochemistry. I will be incredibly busy, but it is all absolutely worth it!

It was so lovely coming back to TPS last week.

It will forever be my home.”

2017 Ava Strohmeyer has kept herself busy and challenged since her graduation in 2017.

She now attends The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut, where she holds the prestigious “Scholar Athlete” title since her freshman year, a title that requires a GPA above 3.5 and being a three-season varsity athlete. Ava’s sports are equestrian, soccer and downhill ski racing. She is also known around campus as a proctor, cicerone, peer tutor and

class VP. In July, Ava traveled with a group of 12 new friends from North America on a service trip to Peru. Later this summer Ava and her horse, Vince, earned Champion Reserve at the Connecticut Hunter Jumper Association Junior Medal Finals in Westport, Connecticut.

She will soon be heading to four national championships to compete against the best high school riders in the country. We wish Ava the very best! The attached photo of Ava was taken at the Lake Placid Horse Show in July 2019 on her horse, Vince, jumping in the 3’6” Hunter Class.

Feb 17, 2019. Jace, who has dyslexia, was accompanied by his mom, Nicole. She reported, “I have heard Jace speak many times through the years but when he presented this lecture to a group of educators, I found it a moving experience. While all the teen presenters were excellent speakers, there is a distinct difference in their style, comfort and interaction with the audience. I absolutely credit TPS with giving Jace the confidence and experiences necessary to be a poised public speaker.” Thank you, Nicole, and way to go Jace!

Piper Jenkins, spent part of her freshman year at TPS interning for the Office of Institutional Advancement. Part of her work was self-directed, and she chose to connect with Green and Gold Captains. Since she was, at that point, the current Gold Team Captain, she was eager to find out what alumni remembered about their time at TPS. Piper has successfully started this semester at St. Andrews in Delaware, and though she misses TPS, she is extremely happy

We were sad to lose the Hamel-Henn family back to the shores of England last year where David has started secondary school in Bedford.

It was lovely to hear from mom, Leslie, who tells us that the family is well settled and loving village life. “We had such a lovely Easter in Germany, where Harald’s family lives.

The village is too quiet when the boarders leave so I am always glad for them to return to town. It is so much livelier with them laughing up and down the road.” We wish David, Kiran, Leslie and Harald well in this new and exciting part of their lives!

Green & Gold Forever!

Alumni Alley Profile of a Graduate Anne Christensen ‘01 is the youngest of three siblings to graduate from TPS. Her family took a very active role in all areas of school life both during and after the 18 years that Anne and her siblings, Tim and James, were students. Anne, who was a proud Green Team Captain, has many wonderful memories of TPS, including establishing some lifelong friendships. After TPS, Anne attended Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York, followed

by Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She played D-III field hockey at F&M and majored in government.

After graduation, she worked as a paralegal in Manhattan for four years before deciding to pursue a career in human resources. For the past seven years, she has held a variety of human resources roles at Citibank and currently is an HR Business Partner. She recently returned to New York following a five-month assignment working in Singapore.

Anne was a founding member of the TPS Alumni Council, which she joined shortly after college. In 2011, she was invited to join the TPS Board of Trustees and finished her second term in 2017.

When asked about her time on the board, Anne said: “It was an incredibly rewarding experience to reconnect with Tuxedo Park School and have the privilege of serving on the board. As an alumna, I can confidently say that the school continues to honor and strengthen the many traditions that we remember so fondly, while adapting to the realities of 21st century learning. I look forward to remaining connected with TPS and encourage all alumni to come back to campus and visit. It’s wonderful to see how far the school has come while still feeling like the same small place we left – however many years ago. Go Green!”

Love and Marriage Ben Josephs ’04 Ben and Eva were married on September 2, 2019, at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard. Some notable TPS alumni present included his siblings, Emily ’00 and Dylan ’09, as well as good friend Caitlyn Porto ’00. Ben tells us, “After some discussion with Caitlyn, she agreed to be our officiant, and we are so glad she was willing to take on the challenge. With some light coaching from the clergy at our synagogue, Caitlyn proceeded to not only share some really special words, but also conduct a beautiful, modern yet still traditional Jewish ceremony. This is a result of all the hard work that Eva put into the conversion class that she was taking concurrent with our wedding planning.”

The happy couple had a month-long honeymoon in Bali and Thailand, then, upon return, moved to Los Angeles, CA. To determine where they want to live, Ben and Eva have stayed in different LA neighborhoods for three weeks at a time. Mazel Tov!

Michael Watts ’04 Michael and Annie were married at the Currituck Lighthouse in Corrolla on May 23, 2019. The reception and week-long party was held in Duck, NC. The locale has been the favorite vacation spot for the Watts family for many years. As a boy, Michael loved this spot and knew exactly where he wanted to get married. Good thing Annie loved it too! On a perfect spring day, Mike and Annie were married by Max Defrancesco ’03 and lovingly supported by family, friends and TPS alumni including brother and best man, Chris ’01, and musician, Mike Potash ’04.

Mike and Annie live in New York City with their two dogs, Dobby and Luna.

Eric Deraney ’06 Eric Deraney attended TPS since Kindergarten with his brother Kevin ’04, the same year their mom Dana Deraney, became the school nurse, a position she held proudly for the next 17 years.

Eric attended Don Bosco Prep on a full merit scholarship and worked at Panera Bread in Ramsey on Route 17, where he met Samantha Gonzalez. They began dating in 2008 and were married in September 2018 at Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, New Jersey. Eric currently works in Real Estate Private Equity at The Blackstone Group and Dr. Samantha is a Veterinarian at St. Marks Veterinary Hospital in NYC. They both live together with their adopted terrier, Mollie, in Greenwich Village, NYC.

Margaret Thompson ’08 Margaret Thompson married Colin Stevens in Newport, RI, on August 17, 2019. The couple met in college through a mutual friend. Upon graduation, Margaret and Colin spent the next three years traveling the country and living in multiple states while Colin pursued his professional hockey career. They have now settled just outside of Boston, MA, with their black Labrador, Madaket.

Margaret works in commercial real estate and development and Colin continues to coach hockey.

In Memoriam Chris Sonne ’49 Christian R. Sonne, 82, died peacefully on March 22 of Alzheimer’s and kidney failure in the same house in Tuxedo Park where he grew up and lived most of his life. His father, Hans Christian Sonne, a Danish immigrant, was sent to NY to represent a British banking concern in the early ‘20s. His mother was Carol Mulford Sonne from Montclair, NJ. Chris, whose family has a long and fruitful history with Tuxedo Park School, attended TPS for grades 1-4 (1941-45) and then graduated as a top student from St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, and Yale University. He also studied at Columbia University, where he received a Master of International Affairs and a Certificate from the Russian Institute. He spent a year in Munich, Germany, on a Fulbright Scholarship. His interest in the facts of history knew no bounds. Whatever topic came up, he was able to tell his listeners something they didn’t know. He also served in the U.S. Army as an artillery officer at Fort Bliss, TX. Chris was an investment banker for more than 25 years, specializing in the financing of foreign governments and corporations in the U.S. and Eurodollar capital markets for Harriman Ripley, Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs.

Chris married Sally Barnes, the daughter of a newspaper publisher from Bristol, CT, in 1966. They lived together in NY, Paris and finally Tuxedo Park. They raised four children; Peter of Cameron, SC; Nicholas of Bedford, NY; Matthew of Bethesda, MD; and Edie of Seattle, WA. All attended TPS. During those years, the Sonnes were very involved in the life of the school, just as Chris’s parents had been when he and his sisters attended. Chris’s father, Hans Christian Sonne, served on the TPS Board of Trustees as did Sally.

As the historian of the Town of Tuxedo and president of the Tuxedo Historical Society, the history of that area in Orange County, NY, became a passion. He was a curator and keeper of the memory of the Town of Tuxedo and Tuxedo Park.

Chris was always generous with his time and talents in several non-profit organizations. He was a good-natured gentleman, fair and decent. He was devoted to and proud of his wife, children and grandchildren. He had no pretenses; he could wear a hard hat and wield a chainsaw or don a black tie and dine with royalty. The irony of his life – and death – is that two of the natural gifts he had been given, a big brain and a wellfunctioning kidney, both weakened and led to his death. He lived life to the fullest, leaving nothing on the table.

TPS was honored to award Chris a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014. On that occasion, he was presented with an engraved chair that he cherished.

In Memoriam Augustus Bradhurst Field 111 ’48 Brad Field 85, of Camden, SC, peacefully passed away on January 29, 2019.

Son of Augustus B. Field Jr. and Harriet McKim, he was born on January 2, 1934 and grew up in Tuxedo Park, NY, where he attended Tuxedo Park School. He then attended the Brooks School in North Andover, MA, and prior to graduating from Harvard University in 1955, he served as a Corporal in the United States Army Security Agency in its Signals Intelligence branch. He later returned to Tuxedo Park to lead an active family life, while working in New York City as an investment banker with Brown Brothers Harriman. Upon retirement he moved to Naples, FL, to care for his father. He then settled in Camden, SC, with his wife. He enjoyed gardening, his springer spaniels and precious time with family and friends. He is predeceased by his sister Pamela F. Kaplan, and survived by his wife, Susan R. Field, son, Augustus B. Field IV, daughter-in-law, Lisa S. Field, and granddaughters, Carly Alison and Madyn Elizabeth Field.

Derek C. McFadden ’10 Derek passed away tragically in Tucson, AZ, on August 17, 2018, at the age of 23. Derek is remembered as a great person who brought humor and empathy to his friendships and pure joy to his mother, Robin, father, David, and brother, Jake ’05. The bond of love he shared with his mother was ever-present and unbreakable. Jake and Derek’s love and friendship were cornerstones of so many happy and cherished family moments. To everyone’s delight, Derek’s engaging, and outgoing personality led to many funny situations and helped to forge new friendships. He loved the outdoors, hiking, swimming, surfing and skiing. He often went fourwheeling, fishing, shooting and hunting with his friends and father.

Brock, Derek’s support dog, meant the world to him and was always by his side.

Derek was born and raised in Tuxedo Park and attended St. Mary’s preschool and then TPS from kindergarten through sixth grade. He attended George Baker High School, Storm King Prep School, Don Bosco Prep and the University of Arizona where he was a member of the AEPi Fraternity.
