Ierland werd immers al herhaaldelijk veroordeeld door het Europees Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens omdat het zwangere vrouwen niet de mogelijkheid bood om de zwangerschap te beëindigen wanneer hun eigen leven op het spel staat. Het zou uiteindelijk nog tot 30 juli 2013 duren vooraleer Ierland het verbod op abortus zou verzachten na een jarenlange strijd door zwangere vrouwen en pro-choice activisten. b. Dit veranderde in 1983 toen door gelobby van de pro-life activisten Amendement 8 tot bescherming van het leven van ongeborenen aan de Ierse Grondwet werd toegevoegd:
