Riotstrap locals in newCaledonia

AWoodend couple is currently trapped in New Caledonia as riots and unrest cause chaos across the Pacific territory.

Dr Maxwell Winchester and Dr Tiffany Winchester were on holiday and due to fly home last Tuesday when protests broke out over voting reform in the French-ruled archipelago.

The unrest began over anew bill that will allow French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years to vote in provincial elections –a move some local leaders fear will dilute the Indigenous Kanak vote.

As protests turned violent, France declared astate of emergency and the airport was closed to travellers like the Winchesters.

Dr Winchester told the Express they could see fires being lit all over the city from their hotel.

"Every shop has been burnt or smashed up," he said.

"We're all watching out for looters and we've only got a few days of food left here."

Dr Winchester said their hotelier warned them that if trouble reached the hotel their only escape would be to the forest.

FROM CALM TO CHAOS

The couple had left their island accommodation at the Hilton resort last Monday, and headed to the mainland for an overnight stay in Noumea before intending to catch an early morning flight home.

They walked through the city and while there were protesters everywhere it appeared calm and friendly.

"We went for lunch and by the time we came back from lunch it had turned violent," Dr Winchester said.

"We got into ataxi and noticed the motorway exits were barricaded but we did actually make it back to our hotel.

"The next morning we called for a6am shuttle but it

never arrived. The airport was closed and the road was closed.

"We then realised how bad it was. We're actually trapped where we are."

Dr Winchester said he called the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade but wasn't taken seriously.

"It hadn't made the Australian news yet," he said.

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Sunday said the government was working to support those stranded after all inbound and outbound flights were grounded.

"The Australian Defence Force is ready to fly, pending commercial flights resuming," she said.

"French authorities advise the situation on the ground is preventing flights. We continue to pursue approvals."

At the time of going to press yesterday, local news was reporting French forces had regained control of the road to the airport.

Burglarydoesn’t steal Rangers’ spirits

Thieves emptied the canteen in aburglary at Kyneton District Soccer Club last Thursday night.

Early Friday morning, committee member Lenka Thompson found the key lock box tampered with and all doors to the change rooms, clubrooms and kiosk open.

"On first inspection it appeared nothing had been taken or damaged, but it wasn't until Saturday'sgame day that Rebecca Moore, the club'scanteen coordinator, found that all the pre-prepared food from the fridge and freezer was missing," Lenka said.

Rebecca said she was absolutely gutted when she arrived and found all the food had been taken from the canteen.

"My partner and Iwork throughout the week to get things like the slow-cooked pulled pork ready for game day because our pulled-pork and coleslaw rolls are very popular with everyone, as well as our homemade sausage rolls, and hot dogs," she said.

"They were all gone. Even all the bags of frozen bread rolls were taken from the back."

Regardless of the break-in, Rebecca and her partner,Siggy, did not let the burglary steal their spirit for providing food for Kyneton soccer's game day. They pulled up their socks and kicked into action and found what other stock they had and what they could buy to top up the canteen offerings.

They opened the kiosk brimming with hot chocolate, chai, homemade pies, homemade sausage rolls, egg and bacon rolls, hot dogs, and ateam full of good cheer as they successfully fed everyone until the last game in the late afternoon.

Kyneton Rangers president, Ron Cole, said the club had reported the break in to police and an investigation was being undertaken.

"It was avery disappointing start to Saturday, but thanks to the hard work of Bec and Siggy, the canteen still provided great food for us all and made agood return for the club and Ithank them and the rest of the canteen team for that, absolutely," Cole said.

Be sure to support the club, and Bec and Siggy, atthe Kyneton Rangers games on Saturdays for some tasty food and drinks from the canteen.

Anyone with information about suspicious activity around the Barkly Square club rooms on the night of Thursday May 16 is asked to contactKyneton police 5421 2900.

RecognisingHarcourt’s biodiversity Recognising Harcourrtt’s y

Apetition calling for Mount Alexander Shire Council to protect Harcourt’snative plants, animals and habitats has attracted its 1600th signature.

It comes in the same week that the council has released aStrategic Biodiversity Assessment and draft planning controls, documents that will inform the development and rezoning of Harcourt.

Members of Harcourt Valley Landcare, who launched the petition, are applauding the recognition of Harcourt’sbiodiversity in the assessment and the recommended vegetation and environmental overlays, but are asking Harcourt’snature-loving residents not to become complacent, with the final community consultation phase of the planning process about to take place.

“The 1600 people who signed the petition have let our councillors know biodiversity is important to them,” said HVL president Terry Willis.

“They’ve told the council they support the protection of the wildlife corridors that allow safe passage for our precious native species from Leanganook to the Walmer Forest. But there’sone more chance to ensure the council takes on these recommendations –and that’shappening this week.”

Councillor Tony Cordy will attend two drop-in sessions in Harcourt over the next week, to hear feedback on the proposed planning controls and biodiversity assessment. Submissions are also invited via the council’scommunity engagement platform, 'Shape', until Monday,June10.

The assessment, published on Shape, highlights important biodiversity assets HVL has been advocating for over the past four years, since Harcourt was first proposed as agrowth area.

“It’sfantastic to see the importance of these roadside habitats and waterways

being recognised by this document,” Terry said.

"Harcourt residents, and any residents of the shire who care about the native plants and animals and the beautiful Harcourt landscape, should voice their support for the protection tools recommended by the authors of the study.”

Terry said that while the group believed the protection of biodiversity assets would require behaviour change campaigns and enforcement to be truly effective, the overlays recommended in the assessment formed the foundations of protecting these assets.

Drop in sessions:

Friday,May 24 from 4.30 to 6pm at the Harcourt Bowls Club and Wednesday,May 29 from 3to7pm at the ANA Hall. Wed29May 3–7pm, ANA Hall, Harcourt. shape.mountalexander.vic.gov.au ('Proposed planning controls' –look for the superb fairy wren).

"This is aBudget to train more tradies, build more homes, boost bulk billing and give more Australians acrack at university or TAFE," Mr Mitchell said.

"Our Budget is investing in aFuture Made in Australia, the transformative opportunities of clean energy, new technology, strengthening our defence industry and capability, and investing in strategic industries.

Playersdonatetoschool hall fund

Kyneton High School executive principal Ana Rees received asurprise visit and special donation recently from three committee members of Kyneton amateur theatre group, Cathouse Players. Cathouse president Bette Sartore and former teachers Kate and Brian Fitches all took aquick break from aproduction meeting for their upcoming production of Gaslight to visit and it was all because of an article published last year in the Midland Express. The article covered the launch of aMajor Gift Donor Program, specifically aimed at restoring and preserving the cultural and artistically-rich heritage of the school's historic hall.

At aCathouse Players' committee meeting it was mooted by Bette Sartore and passed unanimously that a$1000 donation be made to the hall's restoration project.

It's now universally acknowledged that the hall, constructed nearly acentury ago in 1927, is in urgent need of total refurbishment to make it ausable venue for music, drama students, and audiences.

Bette said the Cathouse Players had received wonderful support by Macedon Ranges locals and beyond, and she hoped that other theatre companies would feel inspired to support Kyneton High school's hall restoration. Further enquiries can be made by contacting the school on 5421 1100.

GizAsaurus to roar again

How do you make astranger smile? Acreative Gisborne teenager has found just the right combination of silly, fun and lovable to do the trick.

He is the Giz Asaurus –determined to make your day,and he's been doing exactly that for many residents with his sporadic appearances around Gisborne since January

The 'silly' comes in the form of an inflatable dinosaur costume, the 'fun' are his adventures around town, and the 'loveable' is just his general nature.

So far, hehas popped up at various roundabouts, New Gisborne Primary School, Swinburne Kinder and the Gisborne Market.

He is typically seen holding a misspelt sign with aheart-warming or cheerful message.

"Weall have many opportunities every day where we can be kind, silly or unexpectedly joyful," Giz Asaurus said.

"Finding and contributing to those moments can be so tiny, but the ripple effect can have ahuge impact to make our world agentler place to live in."

Stepping into the Giz Asaurus role has been this teen'sway of interacting with the wider community –and his concealed identity is all part of the fun.

Giz Asaurus is ateam effort –along with ateenager in the suit is also aparent assisting with transport, safety considerations and social media fun.

They said the community reaction had been "bigger than expected".

"Weare overwhelmed with all the

love! We want to thank the community for being so engaged with this fun, silly idea.

"Giz loves all the honks from passing cars. We've also enjoyed reading all the positive and supportive comments on Facebook –some of the interactions have been deeply meaningful and we're humbled that people have shared how atiny moment in time has improved their day."

The character was created when that loveable teen decided his fun dinosaur costume deserved more outings.

"It sat in my cupboard until my friend was going on camp and I thought it would be funny to surprise them on their way to school with a 'good luck' sign while in costume -it made both of us so happy that Idecided Iwanted to do this on abigger scale," he said.

Recently, that same friend has joined Giz Asaurus to double the fun. They go by New Giz Asaurus (will there be aSouth Giz Asaurus added to the herd? Maybe!).

If ever you think you have discovered who is behind the Gis Asaurus, they ask that you don't reveal their identities so the mystery and fun can continue.

Giz Asaurus has been so popular the team behind is considering opportunities for fundraising for local causes like the Gisborne Food Bank. Details on this are expected to be announced soon.

Residents can follow the Giz Asaurus adventures via Facebook: facebook.com/TheGizAsaurusRawr

Six homes approved

Six double-storey houses planned for 56 Howey Street, Gisborne, have been approved at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The applicant challenged Macedon Ranges Shire Council'sdecision to refuse the plans against planning officer advice.

MRSC rejected the build based on it not responding to town character, inappropriate density, access, overlooking issues and lack of housing diversity

The VCATmember found the development largely responded to the planning scheme and granted approval with altered conditions including the addition of apedestrian footpath.

Digital licence arrives

Eligible Victorians are now able to access their digital driver licences after setting up their profile via the myVicRoads and Service Victoria apps.

Digital Driver Licences have undergone rigorous privacy and security testing, boasting features like adynamic hologram and atimed QR code so businesses and authorities can scan to verify authenticity and prevent fraudulent use.

The licences can also be updated in real-time if there are changes to licence conditions or personal information like home addresses.

Learners and probationary licence holders will be able to access their digital licence by 2025.

TheCompost Conversation Howtouse your ‘mind blender’

We have talked before about the importance of getting the moisture content of our compost piles right. Our favourite image for the ideal level is awrung out, wet sponge, wet enough that, if you squeezed it hard you could just get out another drop, but not dripping water. This is about 55 per cent moisture, perfect for good composting.

But, when we add another layer to our pile, be it bin or bay,how do we know our pile’smoisture level is just right, and how will what we are just adding to the pile affect this?

At YIMBY we like to get our composters to think about the moisture content of every ingredient they are adding to their pile (as well as the carbon/nitrogen ratio and lightness/density,but they are covered in other places). We use this visualisation exercise to help; imagine we take acompost ingredient and put it into aheavy-duty blender and vitamise it for aminute, how wet would it be when it comes out?

Now,this may seem astrange thing to get people to imagine, but it really does help, and it is amazing how accurate most people are once they let their imagination loose on this.

Say we want to add acatcher full of fresh grass clippings to our compost pile, we probably can’t squeeze asingle drop of water out of the grass asitis, but stop for amoment and visualise the blender.Wecan see in our mind that after blending the moisture in the cells of the grass is released and that grass is going to pour out of that blender like asmoothie, much wetter than our perfect wrung-out sponge

So, fresh grass is awet ingredient that will add moisture to our pile andwill need to be balanced with somedryer ingredients to get the perfect mix. We don’t actually blend it before adding it to our piles, as long as the ingredients are not too large, the microbes will do the blending/breaking-down work in our pile, we just use the blender in our imagination to assess the moisture content.

Let’stry the trick again with something like woodchips. Put them in your imaginary blender and set to high. The pieces of wood might get very fine and chopped up, but it really doesn’t matter how long we blend them for, weare not going to get arunny mix out. So, woodchips are adry ingredient and need to be balanced with something wetter

Dry piles ormixes can be sprayed with water, and this does help, but lots of water will pour through apile and take nutrients

with it. Pre-soaking dry ingredients in abucketa fewhours before adding them to the pile will get more moisture to stay and is regular YIMBY practice over the summer months, but the very best way to get moisture into our pile is in the very ingredients themselves.

Once we get this ‘mind blender’ trick working, adding water to our pile will mostly be to counter drying out in hot and/or windy conditions, orto compensate for the moisture lost from ahot compost pile, all that ‘steam’ on cold mornings has to come from somewhere.

Havefun with your ‘mind blender’.

One of Australia's best-loved poetry events, Woodend's Chamber Poets, will be hosting its 100th session in June to coincide with the annual Woodend Winter Arts Festival.

Hosted by local haiku expert Myron Lysenko, Chamber Poets has been welcoming poets old and new for more than 10 years.

Some come for achance to share their thoughts in front of amicrophone (with guaranteed warm applause!), while others attend regularly just to have alaugh and share in the company of those who like their words to be clever, creative and wild.

Seven celebrity poets from around Victoria have agreed to join them for this very special anniversary event.

If you don't know much about 21stcentury poetry, here's your chance to be exposed to some of Australia's finest.

Be dazzled, moved and entertained by Andy Jackson and Ross Donlon from Castlemaine, Gayelene Carbis of I Have Decided To Remain Vertical fame, Professor Kevin Brophy from Melbourne University, spoken-word artist Es Foong, Joe Dolce (some readers might remember Shaddap You Face in 1980!), and finally, the mysteriously-named TT.O from Melbourne.

They will even squeeze in abit of an open mic section for those who'd like to have agothemselves!

Entertainment will also be provided by much-loved local band Black For-

est Smoke who have been playing their homemade songs –often poems set to music –since Chamber Poets started in early 2013.

In its early days, Chamber Poets sessions were held at the Woodend cafe Fox in the Chamber– hence the name. When it was movedtolargerpremises at the RSL Hall, they decided to keep the name that had become so well known.

Regular attendees speak of the friendship and sense of community to be found at poetry readings –apoetattending his first Chamber Poets last month said “It's all about good fellowship, good poetry, good music –and achance to read my poems!” Even the newest and most humble poets are given aspace to be heard and appreciated.

Regular attendee Tom Perfect said Chamber Poets was an expression of your state of mind and the world and the events in it. "What makes it such arare event is that the audience is always sympathetic and generous in their response," Tom said. "Chamber Poets is ahome away from home for me, and Iappreciate the opportunity to be with fellow travellers.”

So go along and join in the fun on Saturday June 8at1pm at the Woodend RSL in Anslow Street. There will be drinks at the bar and nice things to eat –and there will definitely be some bloody good poetry!

Atale of survivalfrom Syria

The critically acclaimed documentary For Sama,byaward-winning Syrian activist, journalist and filmmaker, Waad Al-Kateab, will be screening for two evenings in June courtesy of the Macedon Ranges Rural Australians for Refugees.

For five years she documents her life falling in love, getting married and then giving birth to her daughter while living under constant siege in ahospital set up by her husband.

Although the devastation of this conflict is heartbreaking, this film reveals the incredible strength, resilience and love the Syrians have for their country and their willingness to do whatever it takes tosurvive

Waad flees Aleppo in 2016 for London, where she resides with her husband and two daughters. When For Sama was released in 2019, Waadalsolaunched anAdvocacy Campaign Action ForSama, as aneducation tool to highlight the ongoing situation in Syria and to end the impunity of perpetrators of war crimes targeting civilians and hospitals.

Waad has addressed theUN Security Council, speaking outcritically on their response to war crimes conducted inSyria and the inevitable continuation of war crimes now being played out inthe Ukraine and Gaza.

The biggerpicture

Marillian Jackson, Macedon Ranges

CongratulationsJohn Shaw on your letter (‘Rating student behaviour', Opinions, May 14). Youhave succinctly pointed out the key issues.

As ateacher of many yearsinthe Macedon Ranges Ihaveseen students with severe behavioural difficulties relocated to neighbouring schools. Those that come from apublic school to apublic school more often than not, dosowith consultation between the schools and ongoing communication.

We areextremely lucky in our area to have so many outstanding schools, staffed by dedicated teachers who are community minded.

Wrapped around the curriculum in the local schools are ongoingreinforcements regarding respectful relationships. Life values are at the heart of what our public schools are aboutand our teachers are well aware of the importance of students growing up to be caring adults.

Thank you John for so clearly and respectfully pointing to the ‘bigger picture’.

Awhinge about the state of ourroads

BobLewis, frustrated Lancefield motorist

Twoyears ago we bought abrand-new Kia Cerato Sport hatchback.

It comes with one of those stupid doughnut spare wheels that are useless in the country as it’sillegal to have it fitted on the front, so when you get afront wheel puncture, as we did, then you have to change TWO wheels to have the spare on the back!

For two years now we’ve had kilometres of potholed roads not being repaired around Lancefield and the Macedon Ranges and VicRoads' quick-fix is to just restrict speed downfrom 100 to 60 and sometimes 40km/h.

The Lancefield-Kilmore Road has claimed many unwary motorists having to pull over to do awheel change.

This is unacceptable in today'ssociety!

The Lancefield-Tooborac road is also an exampleofsuchnegligence.

We were driving towards Heathcote and saw that we were approaching potholes,

but as atruck was coming in the opposite direction we were unavoidably forced to hit adeep one.

That caused ablowntyre and bent the wheel rim.

To date we have had three punctures repaired, two blown tyres, and had to have arim rolled and straightened.

Ifound asecond-hand wheel on e-bay that has saved my wife numerous heartbreaking wheel changes; it’snogood ringing RACV whenyou have to wait three hours before they turn up!

Especially when youhave two-year-old grandchildren in the back of the car and it happens to be raining!

VicRoads isn’t interested in any recompense under $1800 per claim, so maybe we deserve aregistration refund, or reduction at least!

The state Labor government seems to have plenty of cashfor pet projects, how about fixing up our failing infrastructure first?

Idread riding my motorbike on these roads, they’re deadly!

Abetter solution

Margaret Grey, Castlemaine

Recently there was an article in the Midland Express ('Campers told tomove', May 7, 2024) about two people (one of whom has children) campingonlandthey own within the Mount Alexander Shirecouncil region

Ibelievethey have acomposting toilet, power and aclean water supply. They have been advised by the council that they are not permitted to live this way and been given notice to move to another type of accommodation.

Ibelievethat recently the council has given permission for tiny houses to be permitted as permanent accommodation.

Why then have thesepeople, whoare living on their own land, beenordered to cease doing so?

Surely how they are living is abetter solution to the shortage of affordable accommodation than sleeping in acar in aside street or living for months in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens as has happened here.

Editor's note: The new law introduced by council allows one tiny house on wheels, caravan or tent to camp on aproperty with an existing dwelling without apermit.

Questionable

RobertGreen, Lancefield

On 24 April 2024, Iasked aclear and direct question of Macedon Ranges Shire Council regarding resolve on DPO 24 (Lancefield Development PlanOverlay) as this matter has been ongoingfor 10 years now (two years before councilgaveitpermission).

In my reply Idon't believe Iwas give an answer that reflects council or staff'scommitment to remove the flawed and failed DPO 24, this has also beenconveyed to me by many members of thepublic.

Iinvite anyone interested in the operation of Macedon Ranges Shire Council to review the question and answers.

As for all the talk about what the Minister of Planning thinks, they made adetermination without have any discussions with landowners –the mostaffected party –despite our requests.

To add to that, adirect representative of the Minister's office told me that they won't remove the DPO because of "legal risk" i.e. they are now putting the cost and access of the courts in the way of resolve.

Thestory in the Express ('Campers told to move', May 7, 2024) (front page no less) about campers living illegally on abush block portray innocent victims against acallous council. This portrayal is not justified.

The victims have evidently owned and lived on the property for some time.

Invarious discussionsthey acknowledge with council officers, they would have been told they cannot liveonthe land.

The land is in the Farming Zone, where adwelling requires apermit. The campers don't haveone. The land is covered by afire overlay It beggars belief that the campers have not been told by council officers that they cannot set up house on the land, for these and other legal reasons. It is likely that the campers havenot paid attention to the officers.

Whichever is the case, ignorance of the law is no protection against it.

The story will unfortunately stir outrage among those who swallow the media coverage; as well as among those whobelieve that the planning laws, like others, cannot be contravened at will.

It’sa draw!

Fresh life was injected into the 2024 Riddell District women'sfootball competition whenKyneton and Macedon played adraw on Saturday night.

Previously unbeaten all last season and so far this season, Kyneton'simpressive winning streak ended.

Overall, the match at the Showgrounds was played in great spirit, with both teams givingtheir all, and the tied score seemed asomewhat fitting result between the two current bestsides in the competition.

Played in icy conditions, the well contested match took place with both clubs keen to produce their best.

Captain Teagan Ainslie starred again for the Tigers, working hard with Belinda Hateley in the ruck.

Elisa Coutts debuted for Kyneton with aweek offfrom the Pioneers and had an impact around the stoppages.

Kyneton coach Phil Hawkes made positional moves to bolster the defence, and this kept Macedon goal-less in the second half.

Twogoals to Roberts in the second half lifted Kyneton'shopes.

LANCEFIELD'S FIRST WIN

History was made on Friday night at Romsey when the recently formed Lancefield team scored its firstvictory

There was huge excitement in the Tigers' camp as their players persisted and worked their way to a3.7 (25) to 1.2 (8) margin.

The first half was very even, and Lancefield then gradually seized overall control.

From humble beginnings, with only afew players at training, the side has grown in confidence under coach Chris Clifton and assistant Cash Ferguson.

The words 'courage', 'determination' and 'teamwork'

are the key words adopted by the Tigers in their sense of unity

This victory is expected to generate more resolve, and the inclusion of some netballer/footballers has given the side more depth.

Goals for the Tigers came from Emma Hensley 2, Meridith Johnson, and Paris Keogh-Beacon.

Best

In the remaining women'smatch at the weekend, Mount Alexander Falcons scored agoal in each quarter at Hepburn.

The Falcons accounted for Melton 4.3 (27) to 1.3 (9) for their second win this season.

League’sgreatest rivalry

It was abig occasion at the weekend as Romsey Football Netball Club celebrated its great achievement of 150 years.

Lancefield FNC has been locking horns with its great rivals since 1879; even then the matches between the two great foes drew large crowds.

Articles of the day expressed the wish that the players would keep their tempers and play friendly. There waslittle chance of that.

The report of the game in 1879 describes the 'anger, passions and unpleasantness' of the game.

There was adispute between the two sides about the last goal that led to some unpleasantness that continued on after the game had finished.

Prior to the game there was aproposal to amalgamate the two teams for a one-offgame against Kyneton or Kilmore, but such was the bitterness between the club that the thought of playing together was too much to bear and the match was cancelled.

It was just the beginning. Rivalry between the cross-town rivals was such that things actually got worse.

Huge crowds attended each clash as the stories of the great rivalry spread.

Areport in 1901 suggests that unless the games between Lancefield and Romsey can be played in 'a more friendly spirit' then the games should be discontinued as 'football will be brought into disrepute, and very properly so too'.

Perhaps they should have been discontinued because it appears things only got worse. In a1907 game reports describe barrackers roaming all over the playing ground and turning into hordes of hoodlums as they brushed among the players shouting and yelling.

In their return match the next month, Lancefield refused to attend unless security was present.

Romsey refused to pay for it so Lancefield held awhip around to pay for mounted police to attend the game.

It'shard to imagine things getting any

150th asell out

Romsey Football Netball Club'sspecial 150th celebration function was asell out on Saturday

There were about 130 seated at the official luncheon, and long-serving Redbacks' secretary Joanne Carroll said later the celebration had gone well.

President Wayne Milburn welcomed all to the special function, and specially thanked chief organiser Lindy Skinner for her research and expertise in bringing the day together

The RFNC has aproud history, and the committee is excited and proud to be celebrating its 150 years of existence as aclub.

Acknowledgement was made of all past and present players, coaches, committee and supporters going back generations.

Special guest speakers added to the atmosphere.

Avariety of old memorabilia and photographs attracted considerable interest.

Lancefield Football Netball Club was thanked for support and participation. Celebrations went on until well into the evening.

worse but when the Romsey goal umpire simply refused to signal aLancefield goal it set everyone off.

The mood between the teams is best summed up in areport of 1910 stating that 'this club bears not an atom of friendship towards the Lancefield club'.

The hatred goes on for generations; the report of the 1945 bloodbath must rank as one of the most incredible pieces of football journalism ever written.

It describes the 'fisticuffs and free use of boots', Bruce Waller being taken to hospital after receiving 'undue attention', brawls broke out all over the ground before asupporter who saw his brother punched jumped the fence and belted the offending player with what was described as being a 'good washer woman'sswing'.

At this point police took over the game and the supporter, having been removed from the oval, is given ajumper and takes the place of the absent Waller on the field!

Aletter to the editor from the Romsey captain lists all the players on his side that

were knocked out. Umpire W. Edwards is described as having done 'a splendid job'.

Youhave towonder after the day if he ever did another game?

Carlton and Collingwood are left looking like kissing cousins next tothesetwo. Thankfully relations have improved greatly between these two clubs but it's still the great traditional clash in the RDFNL.

These games are marked in everyone's calendar when the fixture is released at the start of the year, but today'sgme has an extraelement in it with our great rivals, Romsey, celebrating its 150th anniversary

All at the Lancefield Football Netball Club pay tribute to Romsey on this great achievement.

Not just everyone at the club today but also the generations that have come before to get the club where it is today

There'sno-one Lancefield would rather beat but at the same time there is no-one they would miss more if Romsey weren't around.

Aconfidence-boosting five goals in the second quarter gave Macedon footballers an edge over aKyneton side that struggled to mount sustained attacks on Saturday It was an important fixture for both sides at Kyneton Showgrounds, and Cats’ coach Al Meldrum was entitled to be pleased with his side’sperformance in the low-scoring encounter

Lapses that proved costly for the Cats in earlier matches were largely eliminated, and the side’sability to ensure the contest became astalemate in the second half was vital.

Kyneton expended effort but five goals was not enough to excite supporters who are looking to see some matchwinning performances from the Tigers.

Adominant goalkicker like last season’sstar Cameron Manuel would be very welcome for aside with plenty of young players who can hopefully become more consistent.

It’sa final five this season in the Riddell League, and there’ssufficient evidence to mount of case for Riddell, Diggers Rest, Wallan and Romsey to end up in the finals.

“They (Macedon) have alot of very good players and we know there’sa fierce rivalry,” Kyneton playing coach Ethan Foreman said in the lead-up to the match.

In the first quarter both sides battled for supremacy, and the outcome was amiserable 0.3 apiece.

Meldrum was pleased to have proven goalkicker Jason Cooke back after missing two matches through injury Cooke finished with three goals and is an essential component for the Cats.

Matthew Dick’squality ball use was on show, and when he plays well the side can be inspired.

Catsshut

At the halfway mark the Cats led 5.5 to 1.8, and the second half became awar of attrition.

Macedon was happy to retain the ball and eat up time, with the final margin 15 points –8.8 to 5.9.

Ethan Turner,Caleb Fisher,James Gaffand Brady Muir (two goals) were listed as the Tigers’ best.

Not the most inspiring match, but one where both sides will look forward to this Saturday –Macedon goes to Lancefield and Kyneton to unfamiliar Melton Centrals territory

Earlier in the day,Kyneton Reserves took control in the third term to end up with a8.5 to 5.4 victory

In contrast, Macedon Under 19.5s prevailed 8.9 to 6.5.

The real excitement came in the evening session, where the Kyneton versus Macedon women’smatch ended up in atie, finally ending the Kyneton side’swinning run in the Riddell League.

ROMSEY’S 150th CELEBRATIONS

Romsey’ssenior side bounced back from losing at Riddell to outclass Lancefield by 73 points on aday when the Redbacks celebrated 150 years of football.

The rivalry between Romsey and Lancefield is legendary, and both clubs had successes at the weekend.

Saturday night’sspecial function at Romsey ensure the 150 years by the highly successful club was emphatically celebrated.

On the field, the Redbacks simply had too much class for the Lancefield Tigers who have had abad run with injuries.

The home side led by six goals at half-time, and continued on to amemorable 14.11(95) to 2.10 (22) victory

The talented Corey Pertzel, Connor Bills and captain

Nathan Blair were best for the Redbacks, and Rhys Barber, Riley O’Meara and Jack Dalgleish did well for the Tigers.

In the Reserves, Nathan Hoy extended his lead in the goalkicking with eight majors as the home side won by 112 points.

Lancefield U19.5s fully extended Romsey, with the Redbacks eventually winning by 13 points.

RIDDELL OMINOUS

For the first time this season, Riddell dominated proceedings throughout bybeating Romsey by 50 points in round five, and the pattern continued at Bomberland on Saturday

Riddell welcomed back the irrepressible Dylan Tarczon from injury against Melton Centrals, and he finished with three goals as well as providing motivation for teammates.

The Bombers won every quarter, and Jacob Chahine –another recruit from Rupertswood –finished with five goals.

Final scores were 14.15 (99) to 5.7 (37).

Riddell coach Aaron Bray is looking forward to the big clash at Diggers Rest this Saturday

HAWKS WELL BEATEN

Struggling for consistency,Woodend-Hesket wentdown by 58 points to aconfident Wallan combination at Gilbert Gordon Reserve.

The Magpies had too many in-form players, with Reuben Rode showing his ‘best’ for the RDFNL against Southern League was no fluke.

Wallan lifted percentage with the 16.9 to 6.11victory, and the Hawks now face atough assignment at home to Romsey
