Bustling for Budburst Kyneton Ridge Estate has undergone major renovations to provide a contemporary, casual café with changing art space exhibitions and cellar door experience.

The pinot noir and chardonnay blocks were planted in 1997 and fruit harvested from these vineyards is used to make signature wines. Vines are hand pruned and the fruit is handpicked which ensures quality control.

Kyneton Ridge is a cool climate vineyard with granitic soil and good rainfall, which is ideal for pinot noir growth. They also produce Macedon Sparkling pinot noir chardonnay, sparkling Heathcote shiraz, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, rosé and chardonnay. All wines are available for tasting and sales at the cellar door.

Glenhope and Lord Malmsbury wineries will be joining Kyneton Ridge for the Budburst weekend.

The cellar door will be open 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday and will have Budburst Burgers on the menu plus live music from Gene and his quartet on Saturday and Jazz Deuce on Sunday.

Celebrating 26 years Wombat Forest Winery is a jewel of the district nestled on the edge of the Wombat State Forest and only 15 minutes from Daylesford.

Brendon and Deidre Lawlor are the founders of their family owned and run business and proud winners of the 2023 Australian Good Food Guide Reader’s Choice Award for most popular winery in the Macedon Ranges and Spa Country.

Their first plantings were in 1997/98. They specialise in cool climate, boutique wines including their award-winning blanc de noir with their current range of wines: chardonnay, pinot gris, verdelho, cabernet rose, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz available all weekend. Their recently refurbished cellar door is open Friday to Sunday offering majestic forest and water views from their courtyard, large decking and grassed areas. Wombat Forest is the perfect all-weather venue with wine tasting, live entertainment Saturday and Sunday and their popular ‘Grab n Go’ platters available.

Expect a warm welcome Midhill Vineyard is a small family-owned farm growing wine grapes and grass-fed angus cattle, located at high altitude just west of Romsey in the Macedon Ranges.

The vineyard produces typical cool climate wine grape varieties suitable for this coolest of wine regions. The wines are fragrant and fruity with fine acidity as a result of careful viticulture and wine making.

Their cellar door opens just once per year at Budburst and is in a relaxed setting with unique views of the Romsey Creek valley. Visitors can expect a warm welcome and a taste of delicate cool climate wines. Matching angus beef rolls completes the experience.

Midhill’s sparkling Macedon Blanc de Blancs has been a consistent winner of many awards. It is dry with a fresh grape-fruity note, with yeast and honey overtones.

The popular gewürztraminer has lifted aromas of spicy musk, lychee and citrus. A stand-out character is its crisp, dry finish.

The rosé is from the pinot noir grape, a light summer wine with strawberry notes and a gentle, dry finish.

Their 2019 vintage shiraz is made with fruit sourced from the southern end of the Heathcote region, near Redesdale, has dark fruit aromas and presents peppery spice on the palate.

An absolute mezze feast at Zig Zag Rd. Zig Zag Rd. is opening its doors to Budburst visitors for the first time in its history, and features on the Daylesford bus loop with a number of other wonderful wineries. And they are putting their best foot forward with new release estate wines, that usually sell out within two months of releasing them; great live folk music, and a few DJ sets in between.

Oz from Woodside Food and Co will also be there all weekend cooking up an absolute mezze feast, with all dietary requirements catered for (including vegetarian and vegan).

Expect a very delightful, sumptuous and fresh take on Turkish mezze. And those Levantine flavours match perfectly with the wines, such as the crisp, fresh riesling, which beautifully cuts across the spice and savoury notes.

The Zig Zag Rd. tasting and drinking space is simply stunning, with views of the vineyard and forest beyond. It’s definitely worth checking them out, trying some rare estate wines, and relaxing in what promises to be a very lovely vibe.

Great food and fine wine at Double Oaks Estate Double Oaks Estate is a family owned and operated winery and truffiere located at Lancefield.

Some 36 years after the vineyards were originally planted, this magnificent property was bought by Travis and Kristy Chehab in 2016 under the label Double Oaks Estate. Having suffered catastrophic damage in the 2015 Lancefield bushfire, their young family set about to restoring the vineyards and starting their journey as winemakers. Their passion is to provide structured and elegant wines that reflect the coldest wine region in mainland Australia.

Old foodies from way back, Travis and Kristy had a simple vision – great food with fine wine. Some two years in the planning, they planted their fiveacre truffiere in 2019 comprising winter black truffles under french oak saplings. Truffle hunting expeditions will commence in 2024!

The Lancefield vineyard is undergoing expansion with the exciting addition of gruner veltliner (Austrian) and saperavi (Georgian). Having recently purchased 20 acres in Heathcote, Double Oaks Estate will be expanding to provide greater depth of variety over two renowned Australian wine regions.

Travis and Kristy are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the estate and cellar door during Budburst.

Seven years ago Hunter-Gatherer threw open their cellar door for the first time for the Budburst Festival.

Shedshaker Brewing director Doug Falconer, Love Shack brewer Harri Cox and Old Slang Brewing owner Sam Wills are joining forces to raise funds for Movember.

Breweries unite for Movember breweries together seemed like an obvious thing to do.

“For many blokes, having a chat with a mate over a beer is the natural place to talk to about the tricky stuff," he said.

“Whether it’s mental health issues, or weird lumps or other concerns, many of us men aren’t real good at opening up and seeking help.

“Anything we can do to help, from raising money to simply encouraging men to talk and to seek help, seems like a no-brainer.

“We will have kegs at our Taproom, at Love Shack, the Bridge Hotel in Castlemaine and Red Hill Hotel in Chewton and the profits from these sales will be donated to Movember."

It all kicked off on Wednesday November 1 with a launch at Shedshaker’s Taproom at The Mill complex in Walker Street. A few brave chaps got a shave on the night to help kickstart the campaign, with other events planned during the month. The fundraiser will culminate in an

end-of-Movember party at Love Shack in Hargraves Street, Castlemaine.

“We encourage everyone to visit one of the supporting local venues, enjoy a pint of lager and help support the campaign,” Adam said.

Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.

The three breweries of Castlemaine are joining forces to help raise money for Movember.

Shedshaker Brewing, Old Slang and Love Shack breweries have come together for the first time and have made a classic Australian Lager, the proceeds of which will be donated to Movember, which is raising money to tackle a range of men’s mental and physical health issues.

Students take lead on mental health

Kyneton High School student fundraising efforts will boost men's mental health in the region though local charity HALT. A student-led community Family Fun Day at the Kyneton Rangers Soccer Club last year with men's mental health in focus raised $4000.

Year 11 students, Ava Coleman, Jen Girvan, Leathan Coates, Gabe Weller, Caitlyn Merrall and Oliver Watt, planned, organised and facilitated the successful event following their School for Student Leadership training in 2021.

Students presented the funds to HALT at a men's health workshop at Kyneton Chiropractic Life last month.

HALT founder Jeremy Forbes said the students' work and effort would save lives.

"The funds will ensure HALT continues vital work in enabling others with the tools to enable positive mental health," he said.

HALT events provide tradies and apprentices with the tools to start having conversations about mental health, and encourage tradies to support their mates when they’re going through tough times.

HALT also runs a HALT-Friendly Clinics Program in order to complement their outreach work with tradies. The first of its kind, the program directly links HALT event attendees with GP and psychologist clinics in their local area that have a specific interest, knowledge and skills in men’s mental health and suicide prevention.

The students' efforts will assist the charity's work in Kyneton.

Farm build denied

Five killed in crash

A male child was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All the victims are yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the BMW, a 66-year-old Mount Macedon man, was taken to hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

"It's a fundraiser for The Good Op Shop.

"But mostly it's about having a fun day out in a safe space for young people. Plus we're all about encouraging sustainable fashion!"

There are four different fashion parade themes to enter: summer, wild, single-colour and dress your pet. Use your existing clothes, or come and pick up some secondhand clothes to pull together an outfit. Get out the glue guns, sewing machines, feathers and ribbons. This is going to be fun!

Two children were among five people killed in a horror fatal collision at Daylesford on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to reports a BMW SUV had mounted the kerb and struck a number of patrons on the front lawn area of the Royal Hotel on Vincent Street just after 6pm.

Two men and a woman, as well as a child, died at the scene.

A female child was flown to hospital where she later died.

A male child was flown to hospital with critical injuries.

A man and a woman were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A BMW SUV was involved in a horror fatal collision at Daylesford on Sunday.

Use and building of a dwelling to support a prize horse stud proposal in Bolinda has been rejected a second time in a bid to prevent fragmentation of farmland.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has upheld Macedon Ranges Shire Council's decision in February to refuse the permit.

The 22.534ha 78 Mullalys Road property falls under the 40ha build guide for the Farm Zone and required a permit to proceed.

Officers recommended refusal on the grounds of fragmentation of farmland and the lack of justification for a permanent dwelling on the site.

The VCAT member Jeanette Rickards was not satisfied a dwelling was necessary for the proposed agricultural activity of horse husbandry.

"Nor am I satisfied of the suitability of the proposed agricultural activity of Horse husbandry on the land given the steep terrain," Rickards stated.

"The lot size is well below the as of right lot size for a dwelling in the Farm Zone. Given there are other nearby lots that already contain dwellings the land would be suitable for consolidation with those also small lots.

"The land has been used in the past for cattle and sheep grazing.

There is no evidence that this type of agricultural activity could not continue without the requirement of a dwelling on the land."

You’ll never guess You’d be surprised at the number of famous people living just down the road, in hidden little valleys, tucked away in the bush, or living in plain sight.

From the super famous to the somewhat famous, and even the famous adjacent, we’re going to bring you their stories in this monthly column.

Jade Jungwirth

This month features musician and actor Tim Rogers best known as the front man for the rock band You Am I. Tim talks to the Express about his journey into music, how he met his wife, his pride in his daughter and his love of cricket.

Tim and his wife Alice had the most extraordinary ‘meet cute’.

Many years ago, Tim was travelling on a plane and when it hit a patch of turbulence, Tim picked up an inflight magazine to distract himself, and saw a photo and article about Alice’s work with the Australian Ballet.

“I was probably a few jars in, but I just concentrated on the photo of her and thought, ‘that’s someone I can trust’,” Tim said.

“Ogling someone in a magazine – I could put it that way, but it definitely wasn’t. It was reading the way that she talked about her art, her craft. I got a lovely sense of peace, but also dynamism.”

Months went by and when Tim was introduced to Alice at one of his gigs he said, ‘wait I know you! You helped me through a bad flight!’

Many years later, after connecting again romantically and living peripatetic lives, the pair decided it was time to relocate to the country.

“It sounds a little too prosaic, the old tree change business,” Tim said. “So my line is – I grew up in the Goldfields of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia and if I die in the Dja Dja Wurrung Goldfields of Victoria, they’ll be nice little bookends.

“It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made and I’m in no hurry to go anywhere for holidays. Looking out the back door is enough holiday for me at the moment, or going for a walk in the national forest – that’ll do it.

“We have some great neighbours and it’s a great community.”

“Switching between jobs and bands can be difficult sometimes – they’re not asking me because I’ve got this wonderful voice or because I’m a good-looking rooster, it’s because of something else that’s innate, whether it’s genetics or just enthusiasm. So, rather than be crippled with self-doubt, I make sure I’m over the material and am cognisant of the different characters.

“I’m a bit of an inconsistent performer and can be a little laissezfaire about the seriousness of performance at times.

“With the rock and roll or folk music, whatever I’m doing, this is part of the looseness of it and so you’re just carrying on the great tradition of looseness and ripe old bad behaviour.

“If one thing that’s happened in the last couple of years is that money is tight for everyone, they don’t necessarily want that (looseness), they want to be entertained with some level of professionalism, and while I’ll never be a professional performer, I take that on.”

Growing up, Tim’s focus was solely on cricket and footy. Until one day in 1981 when he was getting a tooth pulled at a mobile dentist in Adelaide and the new Rolling Stones single Start Me Up came on the radio. Jumping out of the dentist’s chair he ran home and begged his mother for a guitar.

“My mum got me a $100 gut string classical guitar and I never looked back. My life’s been a mess ever since.

“I didn’t think music was viable at all, it was just fun.”

After getting kicked out of school in year 11, Tim thought, given it was the last thing anyone would expect, it would be a good idea to apply law school.

“I got in and was a little disheartened to learn that other students already had corporate jobs lined up before they started their first lecture. It was not what I had been expecting. I thought it was all going to be all Rumpole of the Bailey looking after people who needed help. I didn’t feel a lot of that in the three years of doing law so when the opportunity came to join a band, I did – but that was just for fun. I had a couple of university bands going, Blood Nose was one.

“My best friend Nick and my brother started You Am I. They didn’t have a guitarist and I could play a little bit. They wanted to play hardcore punk and I just wanted to play rock and roll, but we got it together – that mix of styles, although it took us a long while to write anything of any worth, anything that was good, and it was decades before I had any interest in trying to write songs.

“Other bands, Silverchair, Powder, Jet, these friends of ours that became wildly successful. We didn’t have that. It was a very slow burn and it wasn’t like people acted weird around us. We were just the band that people – boys, girls, men, women, nonbinary people, whoever – could look at us and think, ‘oh I could do that’. We weren’t freaks and geniuses, we were just s**t kickers and we liked the work, loved the fun.

“I’m still just chasing how to write a good song, only one out of 50 is good, but I love it, working with wordplay, the melodies and chords, but the wordplay more than anything. It’s something to look forward to every day sitting at a desk and working on tunes, it’s wonderful.

“I used to only write in bars but it just became a little

impossible to do that in some sort of peace. I think the best ideas happen when you’re doing something else. And definitely, whether it’s pushing a lawn mower or optimistically planting a tree, it’s definitely where my best material is coming these days...and then I hit the pub.”

Tim told the Express that outside of his work and sports he chooses to give his energy to close friends, his wife and 22-year-old daughter Ruby who lives in New York.

“I get over there when I can, but I thank God for modern communication.

“She’s a wonderful human being. She’s great fun to hang around with and really smart.

“She gives me the energy to be a good human, just watching the way she goes about life is just beautiful. She’s smart, she’s funny and cooler than I could ever pretend to be in a hundred lifetimes.

And yet she’s really lovely to people and empathetic and likes to make sure everyone is comfortable and feeling okay. She’s not a dickhead.

“If I had her charm and intelligence at that age I’d be an awful human.”

So what’s Tim up to now he’s left the city lights and settled in the country? One of his favourite pastimes is reading, particularly fiction.

“There’s a veracity of imagination and I feel calmer and I feel energised by something as simple as reading a book and staying off telephones and computers.

“The only mantras I have are; to err on the side of kindness and always bring a book. It’s a gentle way of achieving joy and optimism, releasing your blues.”

“I don’t think I’ll go back to working in pubs. I think I’m a little too in love with hugging trees at the moment – lawn mowing or landscaping. I love working in pubs, but to a point. The great irony being, that drunk people can be obstreperous. I thought I was the most charming person in the world when I had a skin full, but I don’t know whether I was. But these days I’m more likely to be the scruffy looking guy sitting in the corner reading a book.”

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will hold community information sessions this month to update residents and businesses on Woodend flood study findings.

The flood study was made possible with a $140,000 grant from Emergency Management Victoria's Natural Disaster Resilience Grants Scheme.

At their October meeting, councillors heard much of the work was completed before the flood events of last year, meaning that data will not be included.

Community feedback and climate change data has been included, which is deemed to take the flooding into account.

The last flood mapping study was undertaken in 1997, limited to Five Mile Creek near the township and one constructed trunk drain that extends through the commercial centre and residential areas to the south.

A new flood study will provide updated flood information for use by various stakeholders for land use planning, flood management planning, emergency response and flood education.

Neither a plant nor an animal, fungi are unique, often misunderstood, and essential to making a good compost.

Often the first thing that comes to mind when we think of fungi is mushrooms, but in fact these are just fungi’s fruiting bodies. The actual fungi live under the ground growing in a delicate network of branches called hyphae (hahy-fee). While there are many fascinating types of fungi, in our compost piles we are growing the ones known as decomposers (or saprotrophs) and these fungi have super powers!

Super power number one: decomposing fungi are uniquely capable of breaking down the very strong substances lignin, cellulose and chitin found in our compost ingredients like wood chips, leaves and straw.

Super power number two: adding to the small clumps made by the bacteria, fungi further improve the structure of our soils and compost by pushing and gluing together even larger clumps of particles. These particles make it easier for oxygen to get in as well as helping to retain water and nutrients.

Super power number three: they are very efficient at storing carbon in their cell walls making them total pros at keeping carbon in our soils and out of the atmosphere, yay!

In many ways, building a compost pile is similar to hosting a party. Like any good host we like to cater for all dietary requirements and keep everyone well hydrated.

As we discussed last week, our extroverted bacteria friends arrive early and go straight for the junk food (coffee grounds, kitchen scraps and leafy greens) while our fungi friends take a little more time to get their groove on. Luckily for us, they have quite different food preferences to the bacteria; in fact, they will take care of all the leftovers (straw, woodchips, woody garden clippings and dry leaves). So while the bacteria will polish off the pizza as soon as it arrives, late in the night we would not be surprised to see ol’ mate fungi sitting quietly on the couch casually chewing on the pizza box!

Unlike bacteria, fungi hate to be disturbed. Their delicate disposition does not fare well on a crowded dance floor (read: turning our compost piles). As composters we must always weigh up turning our piles to add oxygen against the need to leave our fungi undisturbed. So, only turn your compost when it’s needed. At YIMBY*, our compost piles are turned twice, relatively early in the process, leaving plenty of time (three to four months) for our fungi to go about the business of curing our compost.

Next week the party analogy will get even weirder and start to resemble something like The Hunger Games with the arrival of our next guests. We will meet the protozoa and the nematodes and discover their role in nutrient cycling.

While many people may know a little about the intriguing land of Tibet, it is a rare opportunity to experience its unique culture firsthand.

Newham is in for a treat this month with a live performance

by Tenzin Choegyal, one of the world’s finest Tibetan musicians, as part of his 2023 Be the Ocean concert tour.

A son of Tibetan nomads, Tenzin feels a particular affinity to the music of the Himalayan plateau and is one of a handful of artists keeping Tibet’s music alive in the freedom of exile. Tenzin plays dranyen (Tibetan lute) and lingbu (bamboo flute) but is best known for his extraordinary vocal ability and performance of droklu, the nomadic music of his parents.

In a career spanning more than 25 years Tenzin has performed at festivals and events across Australia and internationally, including performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

An outstanding composer/ performer with a great depth of musical knowledge, intuition and inventiveness, Tenzin continues to create new sounds while strongly holding the essence of ancient Tibetan wisdom.

His major work, Songs from the Bardo, is a contemporary interpretation of the Tibetan Book of the

Dead.

“It’s a really beautiful ancient text, and this work is a fusion of age-old wisdom with a very contemporary sound,” he says.

The latest version, recorded with US collaborator Laurie Anderson, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2021. Tenzin’s most recent album Yeshe Dolma, is dedicated to his late mother, and is the result of a long-term collaboration with Queensland’s celebrated string ensemble, Camerata.

Tenzin’s powerful vocals and connection with his audiences have established him as a favourite on the world music scene.

His concert performances bring traditional Tibetan sounds and practices into a very contemporary setting, encompassing soaring nomadic melodies, sublime flute pieces, sacred poetry and playful folk tunes.

Through his music and warm explanations, Tenzin takes audiences on a musical journey that transcends cultural boundaries and reveals ancient wisdoms, even inviting them to join him in lively singalongs and meditative mantras.

Gisborne’s new ambulance branch has been officially opened at Robertson Street.

Minister for Ambulance Services and Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas joined local paramedics to inspect the facility last Friday.

The station includes a four-bay garage for ambulances, four rest and recline areas for paramedics to recuperate, training facilities, a fully equipped kitchen, car parking, and improved security.

Works involved dismantling the old Gisborne Ambulance Station and replacing it with the modern facilities.

Bid to unearth goldfields relic Lisa Dennis

Bendigo resident and keen historian Lynne Cooper is in the final throes of completing a fascinating new biography on the colourful life of her great grandfather, former Castlemaine Goldfields police sergeant Henry William Frood.

Sergeant Frood served on the goldfields for 32 years from 1857 to 1889 in Castlemaine, Sandhurst, Daylesford, Horsham and Stawell, and was one of two local sergeants to be presented with a special gold medallion by the local Chinese community at the time.

Lynne said her great grandfather's medallion was passed down to her grandfather and then her father.

"It was enclosed with a worn piece of paper with an English translation that read 'He treated us as his own children'," Lynne told the Express.

"After Dad passed away, my mother Moira Frood made the decision to donate the unique piece to the Bendigo's Golden Dragon Museum in 2003 and it is now in their safe keeping."

As work on her book comes to a conclusion, Lynne hopes to track down the descendants of fellow police Sergeant Daniel Nowlan and the whereabouts of his medallion.

Lynne said local newspapers, including our sister paper the Mount Alexander Mail (now Castlemaine Mail), had proven a rich source of information while researching content for the book.

"I found countless articles referencing Henry and his attendance at incidents that had happened across the goldfields. From what I can gather, he was a kind, compassionate and considerate man and treated all with respect and care," Lynne said.

"One such story tells of a tragic accident involving a 17-year-old Chinese servant who was thrown from a cart while running errands for one of the local hotels. As he lay dying in the street, my great grandfather asked one of the nearby hotel owners if they could move the young man inside off the street and away from the gaze of onlookers so he could die in peace. However, the publican refused.

"Another tells of a young mother who walked all the way to Castlemaine from Muckleford carrying the body of her 13-month-old child as she was told Sergeant Frood would ensure the child would receive a proper burial," she said.

With the assistance of local researchers, Lynne uncovered an article referencing the presentation of the medallions by the Chinese in the Mount Alexander Mail 134 years ago on November 16, 1889.

The article says the medallions were presented in recognition of the 'great considerateness in endeavouring to suppress crime amongst them, without adopting harsh measures or treatment to accomplish that purpose'.

"Frood and Nowlan defied the trend of their times in terms of their care of the Chinese," Lynne said.

"I believe that the Chinese community waited to honour the pair until after their retirement as it would have been inappropriate to do so while they were in active service.

It may have looked like they were seeking favouritism," Lynne said.

"My great grandfather retired to Fitzroy and a Chinese delegation of diggers actually journeyed down to Melbourne to formally present him with the medallion.

He must have been extremely surprised and honoured by this gesture. From what we have been able to ascertain, very few

medals were awarded in such a way by the Chinese."

Nowlan lived out his days in Castlemaine and is buried alongside his wife Bridget and their three-year-old daughter Annie at the Castlemaine Cemetery at Campbells Creek.

Frood died in Melbourne. However, there remains a local connection as his daughter Agnes married John Richard Beckingsale and settled locally where they had five children. Agnes died from complications of the birth of her fifth child, Una. John never remarried. Agnes, John and their children are buried in the Castlemaine cemetery. The Beckingsale family were very well known in the Castlemaine area as

"I'd love to track down Nowlan's descendants. They might not even be aware of the impact he had on the local community and the award bestowed on him," Lynne said.

Her upcoming book is a biography with a splash of fiction thrown in.

"I have used Henry's extraordinary life as a base but I have also tried to capture what he would have seen and experienced and how he would have reacted to those harsh and difficult times," Lynne said.

Health access to change

Community pharmacists will be able to provide treatment and advice for a range of common conditions under a new state government 12-month pilot program.

Services include advice or treatment for women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections or a resupply of their existing contraceptive pill without needing a prescription – with a broader public health vaccination offering, travel health consultations and treatment for mild skin conditions.

About 400 pharmacies across the state have signed up for the pilot, with another 200 set to join the program.

Participating pharmacies in the Macedon Ranges area include: Priceline Pharmacy Gisborne, Gisborne's Hardy'S UFS Pharmacy Kyneton Terry White Chemmart, Malmsbury Pharmacy, Riddells Creek Pharmacy, Romsey Pharmacy, Trentham Pharmacy, and Woodend's Terrywhite Chemmart.

Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas and Premier Jacinta Allan recently launched the pilot program in Gisborne.

“Our pharmacists are already a trusted source for many Victorians – this pilot will expand their role providing more options for people needing quick medical advice for common ailments," Ms Allen said.

Victorians won’t be charged for a pharmacy consultation for UTIs, mild skin conditions or a resupply of the contraceptive pill – pharmacies may charge a fee for a travel health consultation and vaccinations, while the cost of medication will remain the same as a prescription from a GP. Ms Thomas said Victorians were eager for accessible and affordable primary care.

“With pharmacy consultation and prescribing already commonplace in many countries, we know it can provide a safe and affordable alternative for Victorians, while freeing

up GPs for those with more urgent needs,” she said.

To be eligible to participate, all pharmacists are required to successfully complete mandatory training in the piloted services and demonstrate they are well equipped to know if someone should be referred to a GP or hospital. They must also prove they have the appropriate facilities within the pharmacy, like a private consulting room.

The pilot is being guided by expert advisory and clinical groups representing Victorians and the pharmacy and medical professions, including the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.

At its conclusion, the pilot will be evaluated, and any recommendations will help inform longer-term decision making around the role of community pharmacists.

Waiting for lengthy periods for responses is not unusual, but the 13 22 00 phone line proved to be effective.

A very professional Telstra customer service officer was able to ask the right questions, and insisted the email origins be disclosed.

This was done, and ALL were confirmed to be bogus, with the strong advice to delete them.

Beware of scammers! The general public is continually being given this message by police, banks, government, corporate leaders and commercial operatives.

Telstra is Australia’s leading telecommunications and information company, with one of the best known brands in the country, and millions of customers.

The Express has been supplied with information that indicates some Telstra customers in this area are in danger of being 'ripped off' by individuals purporting to be part of Telstra.

Last week a wary Macedon Ranges family was bombarded with emails purporting to be from Telstra, and selling the message 'Here’s Your Latest Bill'.

Initially the customer was informed “the accompanying new bill is due on the date it is set to be paid by direct debit”. The date was the same day the email was sent.

Another email arrived the same day with a similar message.

Usually the family receives a monthly bill in the mail from Telstra, and pays it at a post office, but on this occasion the legitimate bill had not arrived in the mail box.

Over the next few days there were followup emails, one warning that if the recipient failed to up date before October 20, this would lead to account termination. Another had an invitation to take part in a survey.

Having avoided various attempts by scammers over the years, the recipients thought this may have been Telstra chang-

A decade of service

Ten years on council has proven a rewarding endeavour for Macedon Ranges Shire councillor Jennifer Anderson.

Cr Anderson was acknowledged for her 10-year service to local government with an award presented at the Municipal Association of Victoria annual conference and dinner last month.

The Woodend local first joined council in November 2012 and has been mayor five times. She is currently deputy mayor of the Macedon Ranges and also deputy president (non metro) of the MAV, the peak body for the Victoria's government sector.

Cr Anderson said environmental policy had been an area she was proud to see strengthened over her 10-year tenure.

"When I first started on council we weren't set up so well to look at our environmental how we protect our very special environment here locally," she said.

"We started with a natural environment strategy and then that developed into having a biodiversity strategy, and we've developed our climate emergency work and our zero net emissions as well as the single-use plastic policy.

"I'm pretty proud of that one because that was developed following a motion created by myself and Helen Radnedge after a meeting with a young resident who requested we do more, even before state government policy, to look at how we could reduce our use of singleuse plastic.

"I'm also proud of the work that we've done in waste and resource recovery. We were an early adopter of the glass recycling and we're now one of the Victorian councils with the highest diversion of waste from landfill.

"I was given the opportunity to be the chair of the Loddon Mallee Waste and Resource Recovery Group where we worked on regional and rural solutions to improve resource recovery."

Another proud moment for Cr Anderson came when she was part of a close council vote to secure open space at Wyralla Reserve in Gisborne.

"They were going to sell off the space but the community wanted to keep it and now it's a beautiful reserve," she said.

"The preservation of Hanging Rock and the East Paddock has also been one of the big challenges throughout my time on council.

"In my first term on council there was a proposal to develop it but the community didn't want this, so stopping inappropriate development has always been one of my priorities."

Cr Anderson has some advice to offer anyone considering running for council.

"If you get elected, it's very important to make sure that you're learning from others and getting a variety of opinions from experts," she said.

"It is hard work, it's a lot of hours, and it does require quite a lot of juggling of the rest of your life and your career, but if you've got supportive people around you and a community willing to put in the effort to tell you what they want, it makes it a lot easier.

"Things take time, so you have to be patient, but when you achieve things that you know are great for your community and the environment, and you've worked together on a common goal, it's really nice to know that you've played a part in it.

"It really is teamwork, a good team of staff, fellow councillors and a community that work together to achieve good things."

Cr Anderson has been a member of Woodend Landcare for 11 years and enjoys parkrun most Saturdays in Woodend.

She is also a member of the Kyneton Horticultural Society, the Kyneton and District Poultry Society, Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group and the Macedon Ranges Cycling Club.

Under 25 and unstoppable Are the youth of Lancefield unstoppable?

‘Under 25 and unstoppable’ is a youth brainstorm night to be held on Wednesday November 15 at 5pm at Lancefield Hall.

“We want to hear from young people about what they want in the township,” organiser Jasmine Scott said.

The evening hopes to gather information to develop a new ‘Youth Action Plan' for Lancefield. The original plan was created in 2009 so it’s definitely time to do a new one.

“The Youth Action Plan definitely helped get a skatepark in Lancefield and has given weight to several other projects over the years," said Lancefield Neighbourhood House coordinator, Vivien Philpotts. “If young people want activities, events or a dedicated space it is a plan that will help make this happen.”

The brainstorming is for 12-25-year-olds and input from young people in neighbouring towns is welcomed. The event will be facilitated by Roy Maddocks, who was actually part of creating the original Youth Action Plan as one of the young people.

Roy will be conducting a number of fun activities and will facilitate the group creating ideas for a youth friendly Lancefield future – and there will be pizza!

The state government is providing free financial counselling to thousands of Victorians who are experiencing financial hardship.

The government’s Financial Counselling Program supported almost 19,000 Victorians who needed it most in the 2022-23 financial year, including 3806 people affected by family violence.

A $15 million investment in the program in 2023-24 includes an additional $1.7 million for family violence financial counselling, bringing the total allocation for this area of specialised need to almost $3.5 million.

Financial counsellors can offer a range of support, from providing advice about rights and responsibilities to negotiating with a creditor or working out a realistic payment plan for debts.

The government has invested more than $39 million over three years to enable 12 community agencies across the state to deliver general and family violence financial counselling to Victorians.

Victorians can find their closest financial counselling provider by using the 'find a financial counsellor' map on ndh.org.au or calling 1800 007 007.

Lancefield/Romsey Lions has assisted Romsey Neighbourhood House through a $1500 donation for refrigeration repairs to boost its ongoing meal services supporting vulnerable people in the community.

Ethical and humane?

Peter Hylands, former long-term resident of Mount Alexander and Metcalfe Shires In the article 'Professional roo shooter responds to cruelty claims' (Midland Express, October 20) Mr Scoble claims that the commercial killing of kangaroos is tightly regulated and shooters are highly skilled.

The fact is that DEECA (the government department responsible for the commercial killing of kangaroos) does little monitoring of shooters in the field at night so there is no animal welfare compliance monitoring let alone any enforcement of breaches of the 'Code'. The fact is that this industry is profit driven and, like most industries that exploit animals for money, has little regard for animal welfare.

In any event, none of Mr Scoble’s claims alter the fact that every night for months of the year, commercial shooters fan out across the countryside of Victoria and gun down entire families of kangaroos. They don’t spare the lactating females either.

That means they orphan, when you add up the collective body count in Victoria, thousands of newly born kangaroos (joeys) each year. Shooters are supposed to 'humanely' euthanase these joeys. The same code to which Mr Scoble infers strictly regulates this industry states that in regard to joeys orphaned as a result of a female kangaroo being shot that “Joeys are to be firmly held by the hindquarters (around the top of the back legs and base of tail) and then swung firmly and quickly in an arc so that the rear of the joey’s head is hit against a large solid surface (e.g. the

Cyclists in the Macedon Ranges are typically recreational users – different to urban zones where cyclists readily commute to work. This plan is totally out of kilter with neighbourhood identity and needs.

Of course there are hotspots and these should be addressed as a safety issue, but to reassign this road for an elite few is just absurd.

This project should be abandoned until the community can be engaged in a wide and genuine consultative process.

Their dedication and skill were on show in their latest production, Columbo: Prescription Murder, directed by Bette Sartore with assistance from Maggie Browne.

It was a fine ensemble performance with ‘old’ favourites such as Frank Sartore playing the named role and fresher faces like Erin Brass putting in a dramatically convincing performance as the vulnerable patient Susan.

Ross Tempest, as usual, was strong in the naughty doctor role and Katie Fitches, usually behind the scenes, was a standout as the cuckolded wife and victim. And does everyone know about the interval spread?

It showed fine country hospitality at its best.

Classic cars converge on Trentham

The annual Cool Country Classics Show and Shine will be held on Sunday November 12 at the Trentham Station from 10am.

As well as being a meeting place for like-minded classic vehicle enthusiasts, the Cool Country Classics Car Club serves to connect modern Trentham with its historical roots.

The club members collectively own a significant number of classic vintage and veteran vehicles including cars, trucks, motor bikes and tractors, many of which many have been part of the local history for well over 100 years.

And a good number of these vehicles are still operational and you'll often see them on the local roads.

Over the years, the Cool Country Classics Car Club has grown to the point where today it has more than 140 members from across the region, from the Macedon Ranges to Ballarat.

The club has monthly meetings and runs regular club outings and events. Club members are also very active in the community on projects such as the upkeep of the Trentham Station grounds.

The club welcomes owners of all classic vintage and veteran vehicles to display their vehicles at the Show and Shine. Vehicle entry is from 9am and the show begins at 10am.

Coffee and barbecue food will be available and entry is by gold coin donation to benefit local community groups.

Youth stage at the show

Kyneton Show's Youth Stage will bring new sounds to the showgrounds this month.

Music in the Sticks will be hosting four local bands: The Mods, The Tangents, Alter-Ego, and Elo and the Shinkicks.

Tunes will be playing from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, November 17, at the Kyneton Showgrounds, 184-194 Mollison Street.

Open studios at Macedon

Macedon area artists will be opening their studios again to the public on the weekend of November 25 – 26, to complete their second event for 2023.

The 10 artists in the group will welcome visitors to their studios set in their spring gardens, sharing their particular artistic expressions, processes and working environments.

Pottery, painting, drawing, photography, textiles and printmaking reveal some of the amazing artistic endeavours of these Macedon Ranges residents. There is also a display at Top of the

Range Tearooms on the summit of Mount Macedon.

The studios are within a short distance from each other and are marked on a map in the brochure and online on Instagram.

Experience Macedon area with its spring to summer gardens, and combine art with food at nearby cafes.

Brochures will be at The Gallery, Mt Macedon, and Mt Macedon Trading Post, Mt Macedon, as well as in local cafes and businesses in the area.

RACV iis calling lli on Vi Victorian i motorists i to be b aware off how close they’re driving to the vehicle in front of them, with Victoria Police figures showing more than 10,000 fines for tailgating issued in the past five years.

In Victoria, tailgating, or ‘failing to drive a sufficient distance behind a vehicle’, can see offenders receive a fine of up to $248 and lose a demerit point.

A total of 2108 infringements for this dangerous practice were given to drivers in Victoria in 2022, up five per cent from 2001 infringements in 2021.

RACV's Sam Lynch said motorists needed to consider the safety risks around tailgating, with most underestimating the distance needed to stop their vehicles.

“Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you isn’t just a safe driving technique, it’s required by law, although a “sufficient distance” can change depending on the road conditions and circumstance, it is recommended to keep at least a two-second gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front,” Mr Lynch said.

“To calculate the two-second gap, pick a fixed object on the side of the road and as the vehicle in front of you passes it, start counting. If the front of your car reaches that object before you get to two, you’re travelling too close. Slow down and increase the distance between the vehicles.

“If you’re driving in low visibility conditions, if it’s wet or foggy, at night, if you’re tired, towing a caravan or driving a heavy vehicle, that gap should be extended to at least four seconds.

“The bigger the gap between the two vehicles, the more time you have to break or react to avoid a serious collision.”

Mr Lynch also said that 41 per cent of RACV motor collision claims were due to rear-end collisions, which could be due to a variety of reasons including tailgating, the front driver not breaking in time or the rear driver accidentally pressing on the accelerator.

“In addition to the obvious safety reasons, motorists

should also remember that in the event of a collision, it is often the motorist who runs into the back of another vehicle that is at fault from an insurance perspective,” Mr Lynch said.

“The at fault driver may be required to pay the excess on the policy, which will depend on what the policyholder has chosen.”

Mr Lynch also pointed out the aggressive and intimidating nature of tailgate driving, and what motorists should do when they encountered it.

“Being tailgated can be intimidating and can divert the

concentration of a motorist, resulting in collisions or leading to unsafe driving speeds,” Mr Lynch said.

“While some drivers may be tempted to box the tailgater in and even tap on your brakes to send a message, it’s simply never worth the risk to put yourself in harm’s way.

“RACV recommends that if you’re being tailgated or you’re uncomfortable with the proximity of the vehicle behind you, stay calm, maintain a safe speed, prioritise safety, focus on the road ahead and move over or let them pass when it’s safe to do so.”

Muckleford was abuzz for the annual Mount Alexander Vintage Engine Club Tractor Pull.

Tractor enthusiasts from across the state battled it out for competition honours at the 2023 event.

The highlight was the unveiling of the club's newly restored twin-engine Cham-

berlain tractor – a hybrid of two different models that was built by local farmer Morrie Oxley back in the early 1980s.

Morrie was thrilled to get the chance to climb aboard the 'Lizard', as it is affectionately dubbed due to its gait, and take it for a spin with local Chamberlain expert Robert Green who led the restoration.

Ranges EV charging station network expands

New electric vehicle charging stations are now operational in Kyneton, Lancefield and Macedon, expanding the Macedon Ranges' existing network to improve convenience for residents and visitors.

The charging stations were strategically chosen to cater to demand or fill network gaps, and complementing existing stations in Woodend and Kyneton.

This move brings the council a step closer to the goal of having charging stations available for public use in all major townships throughout the shire.

Mayor Annette Death said an expansive, reliable network of EV charging stations across the shire was a priority project for council, consistent with the 2021 Environment Strategy and response to the climate emergency.

“We recognise a network of stations is critical to facilitating the transition to low-emissions vehicles for members of our community, and also helps to attract visitors to the region who drive electric vehicles and may plan their trips based on the availability of chargers,” she said.

“Our public charging station network now covers a significant portion of the shire, but we’ll continue to plan and advocate for funding of other locations including Gisborne, Malmsbury, Romsey and Riddells Creek.”

Evie Networks delivered the newest stations, which were through the Victorian Government's Destination Charging Across Victoria program.

“Evie is pleased to support the transition to electric vehicles for both locals and tourists alike by providing reliable fast charging in the region, ensuring drivers have access to charging wherever they work, shop and play,” said Chris Mills, CEO of Evie Networks.

The installation of more public charging stations also complements the recent installation of new council-use charging stations at the Kyneton, Gisborne and Woodend office sites, supporting the organisation’s transition to an all-EV passenger fleet as part of its Counting down to Zero plan.

The plan outlines how the council will reduce its carbon footprint across Council-managed facilities and operations and reach zero net emissions by 2030.

WHICH SUBURBS DO BEST OVER OUR HOTTEST MONTHS? Spring is generally seen as the peak selling season. Gardens look best, sellers and buyers come out and there is a rush to finalise sales before we settle down for the summer break. But an analysis we took recently shows that summer is the period in which prices rise the most. Having a look at price growth by season over the past 10 years has shown that prices on average increase by 1.8 per cent, marginally higher than spring at 1.7 per cent. Autumn price growth is lowest at 1.2 per cent while winter comes in at 1.5 per cent.

Airbnb. More broadly, interest rates are making it a lot more expensive to pay off loans. We may or may not see a Melbourne Cup rate rise but many households are struggling with the cost of living already. While most will do whatever they can to hold on to their family homes, investment properties would be an easier asset to sell.

Many of the suburbs that do best over summer are not surprising. Beachside Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula is a strong performer. Similarly, Cottesloe is Perth’s most expensive beachside suburb and would get great exposure during summer.

While beachside dominates strong performers in summer, there were some surprises. Terrey Hills in Sydney is relatively close to the beach but would be considered more an urban rural area with large homes on large blocks. Canberra has no beaches but Deakin is one of its most desirable suburbs, even during the quieter summer months.

Ian Flannery (17) took out A-grade with 35 points from Brian Freestone (15) on 32.

Karl Pongracic (26) had 33 points to clinch second spot in B-grade on a countback from Keith Miles (22).

ROMSEY Fluctuating winds in the high 30kph and made it difficult to hit the par 3 greens in the qualifying round for the John Laing Shield on Saturday.

Scott Williams (18) was the winner with 35 stableford points, on a countback from Andrew Clement (10), with Mitch Atlas (6) and Mick Squire (6) both on 33. Davey Kenney was NTP. Williams, Clement, Atlas, Squire, Rob McLennan, Mal Mottram and John Freestone qualified for the quarter-finals.

Hugh Williams (20) was the outstanding player in Wednesday’s stableford with 40 points, from Elaine Scanlon (34) with 32, and Rob Slade (17) on 29.

Time to think about entering for the Romsey Open later this month.

TRENTHAM Robin Wilson has won Trentham Golf Club’s 72-hole championship for the third time.

He carded 74, 76, 75, 72 for a total of 297, 11 shots head of runner-up David Thiele.

Simon Ovenden, who led by a stroke after three rounds, had to withdraw from the final round due to work commitments.

The A-grade 72-hole handicap winner was John Bell (handicap 11) with 285.

Paul Keaton is the B-grade champion, finishing on 344, six shots ahead of Bob Penrose, who won the B-grade handicap with 286.

Tightest finish of the championship came in C-grade, with Rob Ellis finishing on 369, one clear of Trevor McKern.

McKern won the C-grade handicap with a 286 tally.

WOODEND Steve Roberts mastered Saturday’s blustery conditions to fire a fine 66-3-63 to take out the monthly medal, as well as establish a three-shot lead after the first round of the club championships.

Medal runner-up Dan Sipthorpe excelled with 77-13-64 to lead B-grade.

In the Halloween midweek event Rodney Kane spread-eagled the field with 47 stableford points.

CASTLEMAINE Brian Harding was the scene stealer on Saturday, taking out the Medal of Medallists and his third individual medal for the year, plus B grade, with a superb 82-16-66.

The next best tally came from C-grade winner Glenn Carroll with 89-19-70, with Leigh Campbell topping A-grade with 798-71.

GISBORNE A field of 126 competed for the men’s monthly medal cup on Saturday.

Jason Lock, the club’s pennant captain and renowned international golfing and cricket superstar, landed the medal with a superb 69-2-67.

Santa’s helper Jason Sleigh, from Commonwealth GC, came in with a nett 70 in Bgrade, while Brian Robinson had the same tally to lead in the C-graders.

Kaye Atlas, who knows her way around the course and the world, won the monthly medal for the ladies on Wednesday.

Lots of celebrations in the Lock household this week with Daosiri taking out Agrade with a nett 71.

KYNETON Despite blustery conditions on Saturday, some good scores were recorded, with the finals of the men’s championships on this weekend.

The Palmer Stevens & Rennick medal went to C-grader Braeden Cottingham with the day’s best round of 99-30-69.

In A-grade, Tim Kirk 83-9-74 edged out Harrison Huntley 84-9-75, and B-grade went to Peter Cameron with 87-17-70, two shots clear of Jesper Hansen.

The Medal of Medallists winner was long time member Barry Murphy 89-14-75.

Tracey Bramich 92-17-75 led in the ladies.

Nearest the pins went to Terry Gamble (and super pin), Regan Williams, Peter Walsh, Cameron, Hansen and Robyn MacRae. Wednesday stableford: Tom May (8) took out the men’s event again with 38 points, on a countback from Peter Cameron.

Merilyn Hoysted (44) was a winner again with 37 points on a countback from Julie Harris (24), and Helen Evans was the ninehole winner with a nett 63.

Some very good scores came in the first round of the Mavis Cribbes Trophy event on Tuesday, attracting the interest of the handicapper.

Michelle Werner (24) topped A-grade with 42 stableford points, from Vicki Nettlton (21) on 37. And Deb Kohlman (25) was best in B-grde with 37.

The day’s best score came from C-grader Jane Stanley (43) with a very credible 43 points, from Liz Turang (41) with 30.

Stanley, Deidre Dawes and Lorraine Ryan were the NTPs. Good luck to those in the championship finals on Saturday.

LANCEFIELD The ladies incorporated the first round of their championships with the monthly medal on Wednesday.

Sheena Flentjar 107-38-69 clinched the medal in a close finish from Carole Mee 106-36-70 and Jenni Vennell 100-29-71.

Trentham’s first win – and a tie!

The glorious uncertainty of Highlands pennant bowls revealed itself once again on Saturday, with the previous winless Trentham jolting last season’s division one runner-up Lancefield with a decisive 23-shot victory.

There’s sure to be some jubilation when Trentham’s barefoot bowls kicks off this Friday evening (5pm to 7pm). Hopefully some aspiring bowlers come along for an enjoyable evening. The first tie of the season in the top division occurred when cellar dweller Diggers Rest managed to reach a 60-60 outcome against a confident Kilmore.

Romsey, shocked by Kilmore the previous Saturday, had to work hard to get the points at Kyneton, with the outcome still alive going into the last end.

As anticipated, Gisborne collected maximum points at home to Broadford to take over top spot after the completion of six rounds.

Reigning premier Kyneton Golf had the bye, and look forward to welcoming Gisborne this Saturday.

Full marks to Trentham on causing an upset, which has occurred in previous seasons when least expected.

Trentham’s three rinks all won by reasonable margins as Lancefield could not emulate the form shown in outplaying Kyneton seven days earlier.

No wonder Trentham skippers Bob Dobinson, Tim Cook and A. Brockmuller and their team members looked so pleased with the 67-44 maximum points haul.

Trentham has the bye this weekend, and Lancefield has the unenviable task of attempting to win at Romsey.

Despite Anthony Mathison’s 12-shots victory, Kyneton could not keep the Redbacks at bay although Mark Smoljo narrowly missed a shot on the final end that may have produced

an overall victory if the jack had moved.

Kyneton’s performance was a significant improvement from the previous round, with consistency the likely catch cry with a finals spot still a possibility.

David Beardmore’s Gisborne rink was in fine form against Broadford, with the overall margin for the home side being 34 shots.

Second-placed Kilmore was relieved to escape with a tie with two rinks up against bottom side Diggers Rest.

Broadford’s division 2 side managed to upset Gisborne by a solitary shot.

In the same division Romsey’s 42-shot margin over Kyneton was the biggest for the day across the board. All Redbacks’ teams were successful, reversing the outcome in round four.

Kyneton Golf edged out division 2 leader Macedon by three shots in a close finish.

In division 3, Lancefield’s unbeaten run continued, this time at the expense of Gisborne (3).

Hard-fought pennant matches

Round seven of the NDCA Croquet Pennant competition was one of the most hard-fought of the season, with three different matches resulting in 3-3 game draws, and the winners decided only by the total number of hoops scored.

One team won by just two hoops, another by one hoop, and another by a sudden death best-of-five hoops playoff.

Division 2 leaders Kyneton Red were upstaged by their stablemates and last season champions Kyneton Black. Graham Smith was in excellent form, winning both his singles games, including a come-from-behind 1-4 against Pat Fahy to win 7-4. Games were tied after the singles but Kyneton Black were one ahead on hoops scored. Kyneton Black took the first doubles 7-3, and needed three hoops in the second doubles to win the match, which they did, losing 3-7, giving the Black team only their second win, by just one hoop.

In Quarry Hill, the second-placed Kookaburras took on the third-placed Galahs, resulting in another nail-biter. Galahs’ Barry Lovell won both his singles comfortably, while the doubles went one each way, resulting in a 3-3 draw. But the Galahs took the day by just two extra hoops 31-29. With three teams in Div. 2 now all on equal points, and just three rounds to go, every game and hoop won will be critical to who takes out the title on November 23.

In Division 3, playing the last home-and-away round, the unbeaten Kyneton Yellow team had a very narrow win over third-placed Macedon Ranges Mt Charlie. Macedon’s Noeline Richardson had two very

close singles wins 7-6 and 7-5, to tie the games 2-2 after singles, but Kyneton were two hoops ahead. The doubles were split 7-5 and 3-7, making it 3-3 games and identical hoops scored at 35 each. In the playoff best-of-five hoops, Kyneton’s Judy Aldred and Margaret Parker rallied for a decisive 3-1 win to take the points and finish top of the table.

The Macedon Ranges Mt Robertson team of Olwyn Snape and Liz Harnden recorded their first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Maldon/Square. Mt Robertson almost won all four singles games, with Liz Harnden just losing to Anne Stephens 6-7 on the final hoop. The doubles were split, giving Mt Robertson a solid 4-2 victory.

Fourth-placed Quarry Hill Parrots played Macedon Ranges Mt Towrong. Despite a rare but superb 7-0 win by the Parrots’ Chris Scott over Norma Mills, games were equal 2-2 after singles, aided by two wins to Mt Towrong’s Vivien McNish. However, both doubles were won comfortably by the Parrots 7-2 and 7-4, to take an overall 4-2 games win and leapfrog Maldon Maple into third place.

The top four teams in Div. 3 will now go into a threeweek finals session. Top-placed Kyneton Yellow will play now second-placed Mt. Charlie again (the loser gets a second life), while third-placed Parrots will play fourth-placed Maldon Maple.

Kyneton Blue already had an unassailable lead in Division 1, with four wins from four matches, so have already been declared the Spring Pennant winners in Division 1.

Stewart shines

Former Kyneton bowls champion Chloe Stewart won her third Queensland Champion of Champions title on October 26.

Stewart is aiming to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games in 2026.

Representing Club Tweed, Stewart defeated Nicole Williams (Boonooroo Sandy Straits) 25-18 in the final.

She was also Champ of Champs in 2019 and 2020.

A fine competitor at state, national and international level, Stewart has now chalked up 140 international experiences.

A great record for the girl who first rolled a bowls around on the Kyneton green at a very young age.

Gisborne and Romsey are the only undefeated sides after the first five rounds of one-day McIntyre Cup 1sts fixtures.

Now the GDCA tempo is about to change with two-day encounters beginning this Saturday.

Matches are: Romsey v Macedon, Woodend v Sunbury Kangaroos, Rupertswood v Gisborne, Diggers Rest/Bulla v Sunbury United.

WICKETS CRASH There was an astonishing batting collapse on Saturday as Romsey’s bowlers demolished a Diggers Rest/Bulla lineup for a meagre 47 in 19.5 overs.

The home side kept the Redbacks to 8/200 c.c. from 45 overs, with opener Matt Milne leading the way with 54, and Corey Day contributing 47.

Captain-coach Ben Way opted to appear at the crease very late in the innings for the reigning premiers, and is pleased with the contributions various players have made on the unbeaten run.

The Redbacks earned an early finish with their wreckers being on-target paceman Jamie Taylor with 5-12, and promoted Daniel Paterson 4/5 from five overs.

Woodend gave Gisborne a fright at Gardiner Reserve

despite being bundled out for 142 from 29.1 overs. Promoted all-rounder Jamie Pettigrew top scored with 42, and Darcy Thomas snared four wickets.

Without the awesome batting presence of the Vernon brothers, Gisborne was reduced to a shaky 5/50 at one stage as Warren Else threatened to demolish the Dragons.

All-rounders Jarrod Catania and Jay King showed their worth with an unbeaten seventh-wicket stand of 49.

Last season’s runners-up Sunbury United went down to Sunbury Kangaroos in an absolute thriller that saw 444 runs scored.

The Kangaroos scored the winning runs in the final over of the day – a costly loss for United.

In the remaining match, Macedon compiled 6/188 c.c. with man of the match Tim Berzins leading the way with an unbeaten 59.

The Cats managed to restrict the run flow and gain wickets at crucial stages to win by seven runs.

In McIntyre Cup 2nds, Romsey again demolished Diggers Rest/Bulla, with almost a stalemate for 32.2 overs with only 37 runs resulting, with Jack Rees claiming 5-5 from eight overs.

In Johnstone Shield 1sts, Riddell’s key batters all got a start but they fell eight runs short of overhauling Eynesbury.

The only century on Saturday came from Aintree’s Gurbeer Singh who finished 100 not out from 102 balls against East Sunbury.

Romsey’s 2022-23 premiership coach Ben Way would be pleased with an unbeaten record with the two-day matches about to begin.

Bill West Macedon Ranges trained galloper Virtuous Circle (pictured) will run as one of the real outsiders in the 2023 Melbourne Cup today.

The Liam Howley stable which prepares its team at Macedon Lodge and Kyneton, is hoping for a good showing from the New Zealand bred four-year-old in the ‘Race that stops a Nation’.

“Looking better than ever, Virtuous Circle is ready for the Melbourne Cup” was the word yesterday from the stable.

Virtuous Circle will be running over 3200m for the first time; he

ran a close second in the Group 1 ATC Derby in Sydney earlier this year.

At his latest run, Virtuous Circle finished eighth, beaten 4.6 lengths in the Geelong Cup on October 25.

Today’s run will be his fifth in this preparation.

From 13 starts, Virtuous Circle has earned $687,700 in prizemoney.

All set for Kyneton Cup Everything is in readiness for Kyneton Cup Day tomorrow (Wednesday), with a nine-event program to be staged.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club is hoping for favourable weather, pleased that Cup Day is back to normal again after several years of Covid restrictions on crowds, plus a switch to Bendigo last year.

For long-time local racegoers and visitors alike, going to the Kyneton Cup – with a public holiday proclaimed for Kyneton and surrounds – is a ‘must do’

each year as part of the Spring Racing Carnival.

The feature event, the bet365 Kyneton Cup, is to be run over 2006 metres.

The track and course is in top order for the club’s number one race meeting of the year.

For those interested in Fashions on the Field, there are a variety of competitions.

Go along and have your photo taken in front of the special photo wall to enter.

There’s first and second prizes for Lady of the Day, Couple of the Day, and

Best Millinery.

The local club is pleased to have the Fashions on the Field competition backed

Competition heats up in CDCA

Castlemaine District Cricket Association senior sides contest one-day matches in round four of the 2023-2024 season last Saturday. B Grade played a one-day fixture in round three, C Grade (Under 16s) wrapped up day two of round two and the Women's sides returned for round two competition on Friday evening. Art, wine and cheese Budburst weekend is the perfect time to visit Hanging Rock Winery and stroll through the grounds, taking in the breathtaking artwork that harmoniously interacts with the scenic surroundings.

The winery’s annual sculpture exhibition – Art in the Vines – is on show now through to April 30, 2024.

Art in the Vines is now in its sixth year and continues to grow in popularity year on year, with people travelling from all over Victoria to see it.

This isn’t just any old art show. Curator, Malcolm Thomson has sought out sculptures from some of Australia’s best-known sculpture artists alongside some very exciting up-and-coming artists. These sculptures and their creators have been selected to make sure there is a great mix of works covering a number of styles, materials and origins.

Macedon Ranges, Hepburn and Bendigo Shires are home to some of Australia’s most talented sculptors.

Visitors to Hanging Rock Winery’s cellar door for wine tastings can also enjoy cheese boards featuring a selection of local artisan cheeses served with a range of seasonal accompaniments.

Picnic tables are available and you can enjoy the view of Hanging Rock and Mount Macedon with your cheese platter and a glass of wine. Or, bring a picnic blanket and spread out on the spacious lawn.

Walk-ins are welcome and no reservations are required for platters or wine tastings.

They’re also dog-friendly and look forward to welcoming your dog on a lead outside (no dogs in our cellar door).

Warm and inviting Mount Monument Upon entering Cellar Door Mount Monument, guests are welcomed by a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The interior is adorned with low sofas made from organic hardwood, providing a comfortable and cosy seating arrangement.

The space is adorned with captivating sculptures and mesmerising artwork by James Clayden, creating an artistic and visually appealing environment. Visitors can relax and unwind while enjoying the scenic views that surround the cellar door.

Mount Monument’s stunning dining room offers a four-course tasting menu with a focus on seasonality, sustainability, and sourcing ingredients from local suppliers. This means they emphasise using fresh, locally sourced produce that is in season, supporting local farmers and communities, and ensuring the highest quality and freshness of their ingredients.

Their dedication to sustainability involves eco-friendly practices and a commitment to minimising environmental impact, such as reducing food waste and supporting sustainable farming methods.

Ultra-cool at Passing Clouds Passing Clouds was founded near Bendigo, where their flagship shiraz and cabernet grapes come from.

Their Musk Estate vineyard in the Macedon Ranges is an ultra-cool climate site with a top elevation of 742m ASL, perfect for chardonnay and pinot noir.

Cameron (head winemaker) and Marion Leith are proud owners and custodians of their ‘patch of dirt’ at Musk. In 2017, they moved towards bio-dynamics and regenerative agricultural practices to manage the property where they grow their grapes, produce food and bring up their three children.

The newly renovated dining room, open for lunch, overlooks the stunning estate cool-climate chardonnay and pinot noir vineyards. Offering private dining options of six or more guests, this space encompasses the owners’ passion to deliver wholesome shared food, premium wines and long lunches to share stories with family and friends.

Passing Clouds’ team has been making wine for the people who drink it since 1974 and is delighted to be participating in Budburst 2023.

European-inspired wines at Attwoods Attwoods winery and cellar door is at Glenlyon, just 10 minutes from Daylesford.

Attwoods are known for their cool-climate premium pinot noir and chardonnay, producing wines reflective of vintage and terroir. The cellar door will be open all Budburst weekend, with a special ‘Chardonnay and Oysters’ pairing on offer as well as tastings and grazing boards. Sit on the stunning terraced deck or under the

trees in the gardens, overlooking the vines and kitchen garden.

If it’s lunch you’re after, their restaurant Le Bouchon at Attwoods offers a French-style, set seasonal lunch menu, using the best local growers and producers together with vegetables grown in their kitchen garden, the food pairs beautifully with their European-inspired wines.
