Immortalising women
Lisa Dennis
A Bendigo sculptor whose work immortalises trailblazing women will feature in this year's Castlemaine State Festival Open Studios series
Many locals would be familiar with Ruth Lyon's work, in particular The Cornish Miner sculpture acknowledging the hardships of women on the goldfields, which sits in pride of place in Lyttleton Terrace Bendigo
Lyon has been an exhibiting artist since the late 1970s and has an extensive CV, which includes public sculpture, painting, drawing and screenwriting, as well as production design and artistic direction for film
One of her greatest achievements has been the creation of The Goddesses – more than 40 sculptures of Australian women who have been trailblazers in their chosen fields The Goddesses have featured in numerous exhibitions across the state including Parliament House, Grand Central Gallery, and Queen Victoria Women's Centre in Melbourne
Lyon said it was her aim to place women of note on 'pedestals'

Waste wins forshire
February marked the third anniversary of the successful four-bin system in the Macedon Ranges.
As one of the first councils in Victoria to introduce four bins, the shire has diverted more than 43,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill since its implementation.
Mayor Annette Death said the Macedon Ranges now boasted one of the highest diversion rates of waste from landfill in Victoria, at 74 per cent.
This was achieved by diverting close to 29,000 tonnes of FOGO, about 5500 tonnes of glass and 8500 tonnes of recycling.
“I’m proud of what our community is achieving in this priority area and its positive impact on the environment,” Cr Death said.
“It shows how passionate our residents are about reducing their carbon footprint and that every little bit counts when managing waste –I encourage everyone to keep up the great work.”

Rare sighting captured
The unusual observation of alive brushtailed phascogale in Kyneton was captured on day one of nest box monitoring across the Macedon Ranges last week.
Macedon Ranges Shire Council's annual program typically records animal scats and vacant nests, with phascogale activity astrong interest.
Biodiversity projects officer Tanya Loos said phascogales were avulnerable species and were akey biodiversity indicator of healthy ecosystems in the shire.
Three other species used as indicators of broader ecosystem health are powerful owl, greater glider and the brown treecreeper.
"The presence of phascogales in our roadsides and reserves means that critical habitat needs are being met –coarse woody debris, hollows for nesting, and importantly connectivity across the landscape," she said.
The small carnivorous marsupial, with adistinctive tail, is found in the woodlands of eastern and south-eastern Australia and have large home ranges of up to 100 hectares in low density.
All male phascogales die synchronously in about July-August after abrief but intense mating period.
Worksbegin
Construction works have begun at the Old Kyneton Primary School, with the first stage of the site’s tranformation into acreativecommunity hub now under way.
The first phase of works focuses on restoring the iconic bluestone heritage building and creating internal spaces for a new gallery and exhibition area.
Anew link building will also be constructed providing amainentry to welcome visitors to the site, as well as aspace for future events.
External landscaping works and new accessible car parking will improve the site’s accessibility and amenity so it can host arange of outdoor community events, year-round.
Due for completion in early 2024, this first phase is expected to support up to 36 jobs throughout construction.
"It's acombination of species-ecological factors with habitat loss and fragmentation and predation by foxes and cats has resulted in their decline," Ms Loos said.
She said the nest box program provided much-needed habitat for phascogales and allowed their populations to be monitored. There are 144 nest boxes across 48 sites on council land. Also using the nest boxes are species like the sugar glider –the two have distinctive nest habits.
"Nest boxes are checked by council staff and volunteers in autumn (March to May) when phascogales are active and looking for breeding partners," Ms Loos said.
"We use apole camera and amonitor to inspect the nest boxes –this way we don’t have to climb aladdertoinspect, and it minimises disturbance to the animals."
Data is recorded and uploaded to Victorian Biodiversity Atlas including information about the nest box and tree types and signs of animals present, and repairs needed.
The council is monitoring nest boxes one to three days aweek throughout March. Limited volunteer places areavailable for those who would like to join the team. Contact the council on 5422 0333 for details.

“That’s common feedback after agroup sound bath or private sound healing session,” says Nat Dowling from Wander into Wildness.
“It's like the experience gives the body permission or areminder on how to relax, surrender and release tension.”
The local sound healing practitioner explains that people experience deep rest during the session itself, and those benefits generally continue as systems recalibrate.

“We have all sorts of performers take the stage from physiotherapists to plumbers, the wealth of local talent always amazes us every single year and it is such awarmand encouraging crowd,” he said.
Gus Read-Hill is looking forward to being part of the judging panel in 2023.
“Idyll is easily the best calendar day in Castlemaine. I’ve been aband member and I’ve been acontestant, and now I’m finally stepping my feet out as ajudge, which is really exciting. It’s agreat day for the whole community,” he said.
This year, Castlemaine Idyll is supporting IAmSomeone, alocal charity that supports some of the most vulnerable kids in the world, and has cared for more than 10,000 kids to date.

Learn to propagate
Woodend's Grow Locals is offering free workshops in propagating and healthy grasses to help celebrate their first year in business.
"We’ve always had the idea to establish an environmental educational component to the business and aim to expand this into schools, local landcare groups and the broader public," production manager Tully Sumner said.
"We are offering these workshops as an introduction into abroader range of topics and hope to deliver more over the course of the year."
The first workshop on healthy grasses was held last Saturday and the next on propagating cuttings will be held this Saturday (March 11) at 10am at the nursery.
Tully said there were many benefits to propagating aplant by cuttings, including creating an identical plant to the parent to keep characteristics and avoiding challenges of growing from seed.
"Propagating anew plant via cuttings avoids the difficulties of propagating by seed. Additionally, some seeds are difficult to germinate, taking two to three years for
the seedling to appear," he said.
"A new plant grown from acutting will frequently mature faster and flower sooner than aplant grownfromaseed."
TullySumner, Richard Gray and Martin Roberts created the Woodend nursery with aview to reinvigorating the old Acres Wild site.
The aim was to once again supply local native plants and apply conservation expertise to support landowners to achieve their land management visions.
Some of the benefits for the grower of local native are that the plants are primed for unique characteristics of the local landscape, they attract animal pollinators to the garden, and need little pest control.
"Starting anursery midway through a global pandemic and in one of the wettest years on record has not been short of challenges," Tully said.
"It has also been agreat learning experience and allowed us to develop strong relationships within the community and amongst local environmental groups."
Grow Locals is located at 42 Anslow Street, Woodend.

Where dreams and humanitydie
An exploration of survival, the need to belong, and how to cook the perfect soufflé, Cloverlea is the post-apocalyptic soap opera comedy the world has always needed.
In their first-ever theatre show, screenwriters Beth Knights and Georgia Powick have created atimely (and only mildly bleak) comedy, marrying the absurd with the existential.
Beth told the Express that she and Georgia had worked together for more than 10 years as screenwriters and decided it would be fun to work on their own show.
“It’s reminded us why we write, plus I think we’re both thwarted actors,” Beth said.
Cloverlea tells the tale of unlikely (and unlikeable) apocalypse survivors, Christine and Christina, who dwell in atrailer on the set of the long-running soap opera Cloverlea –home to them since infancy.
When each new script begins to kill off major characters, and then, startlingly, swathes of humanity, the sisters cannot hide their distress. What’s going on? And could they be next?
Using soap opera tropes to explore the power and scale of humanity’s ability to delude itself, Cloverlea features three survivors of an apocalyptic event: the twin sisters (who never leave their set trailer) and Jeffrey –seemingly the production intern, but actually their neglected teenage daughter/niece.
As amatter of survival, Jeffrey delivers ‘daily scripts’ and maintains the sisters’ belief they are still on the show that ended when the world did. But water is scarce and supplies are running out.
Jeffrey needs them to wake up and face the truth of apost-apocalyptic world
–orface the even worse consequences.
In each new script, Jeffrey plants plotlines to remind them of the cookery cult, signpost their cataclysmic reality and have the sisters confront their own mortality.
But some delusions are hard to break...
Will Jeffrey succeed, or will she harness the power of delusion herself?
Showing at The Bridge Hotel as part of the Castlemaine Fringe Festival, Clover-
lea will be performed on Wednesday, March 29, and Thursday, March 30, 8pm-9pm.
Tickets are $20/$15 and can be purchased at www.castlemainefringe.org.au

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has removed anon-compliant timber structure from over Five Mile Creek in Romsey for safety reasons.
The structure was located between Wrixon Street and Robb Drive in the centre of a walking track divided by the creek.
"Council has assessed asmall timber structure over Five Mile Creek between Wrixon Street and Robb Drive in Romsey, finding that it was structurally non-compliant and unsafe," astatement said.
"This timber structure was not acouncil asset, however, it was located on councilmanaged land. Therefore, with council's responsibility to the safety of users, council officers organised the prompt removal of the bridge on March 1."
The council stated last week its Romsey Five Mile Creek Master Plan prioritises construction of asafecrossing at this location.
Until the works are completed they urged people to use alternative crossing points located nearby on either side along the creek. Construction of the bridge is subject to funding in future capital works budgets.

I’ve been married to the King Phillip Musat for 17 years! We moved to Harcourt with our dog Maddie in July 2021 and have never looked back. Ilove the relaxed lifestyle, the friendly people we have met on our journey, we have found our own piece of paradise.
When not enjoying the country lifestyle, IworkinITassisting businesses in implementing software and training staff in its use and best practice. This involves some travel around this great country of ours.
When not working, Ienjoy spending time with family, cooking, eating and getting to know our local community and neighbouring towns. I’m so thrilled to have been chosen as Queen of Applefest for 2023 and can’t wait to meet everyone on the day (still trying to perfect the royal wave)!
King Jonathan aka Phillip Musat
Married to Her Majesty the Queen of Applefest, the wonderful Di Lederman. I love the wonderful lifestyle that country living provides particularly in the leafy environs of beautiful Harcourt in the shadow of Mount Alexander.
The transition from the hustle and bustle of suburbia to the peace and quiet of Harcourt, coupled with the warmth and friendliness of the locals who have welcomed both Di and Iintothe community, has meant our decision to live locally has been fabulous.
While no longer working full-time, I spend afew days aweekconsulting within the real estate industry, lecturing at the University of Melbourne and doing the occasional real estate auction. Other than that, Ienjoy time with Di and the family (particularly our grandchildren), exploring the local area, good food and wine and pottering in the garden.
Meet our ROYALS About Applefest
For the past 30 years, Applefest has brought Harcourt residents together, along with many visitors from the surrounding region, to enjoy the many and varied produce and talents that exist in the fertile Harcourt Valley. This wonderful chance to gather at the one-day Apple festival is accompanied bylive music from local artists.
Harcourt Heritage and Tourist Centre Inc, formedin1989 as anincorporated charity, has been the governing body for this event since its inception in 1991. This association operates Harcourt Heritage Museum/Centre in the ANA Hall. The museum promotes the area’s rich history using museum items and an extensive database of more than 7000 entries.
The Dja Dja Wurung have lived and thrived in the Harcourt Valley for nearly 30,000 years. Fruit growing and granite quarrying were the reasons many early pioneers chose to live in this valley nearly 200 years ago. Today, many residents are working remotely in anew way of life. New residents can now combine this while living close to town in arural setting.
Sporting and service clubs, along with many volunteers, make this highly successful festival happen. To join the committee orbecome avolunteer, email info@ harcourt.vic.au

Australian Women’sChoir to feature
The Australian Women’s Choir will be among the special guests at this year’s Applefest. The choir provides aunique opportunity for women of all ages to experience the joy of singing and performing pop, rock and contemporary music.
The Australian Women’s Choir is based in Essendon under the directorship of Wendy Stapleton and the guidance of some of Australia’s most experienced vocal coaches.
The choir was formed in July 2014 by entertainer Wendy Stapleton. Having been aprofessional singer/dancer/ actor since the age of nine, at Her Majesty’s Theatre and Channel Nine, Wendy is highly skilled in the art of performance.
The idea for the choir came about as aresult of Wendy training children to sing and perform for The Stapleton
Dance Academy and then going on to train adults in these skills at aperformance level for both professional and nonprofessional artists.
“I saw the joy people experienced when they performed, whether it be singing, dancing or acting. So to be able to give people the chance to perform at acertain level was an obvious next step for me,” Wendy says.
This choir focuses on pop /rock and takes pride in performing some of Australia’s most iconic hits along with music from all over the globe. Since its conception, the AWC has performed at numerous functions and festivals around Victoria including two years of performances with the legendary Mike Brady at AFL grand final functions at Crown Casino, The Regent Theatre and The Foxtel AFL Grand Final breakfast televised across Australia.
Showcasinglocal talent
The Harcourt Applefest Art Show is an intimate and distinctive exhibition for smaller works.
The exhibition and sale of high-quality original art has become central to the festival. With awards and acclaim to be won, the show has ahistory of impressive entries and esteemed exhibitors.
Your Applefest ticket grants every Applefest-attendee access to the works on display at the ANA Hall. The grand opening and awards night will be held this Friday evening before Applefest. Art works will remain on display for Saturday’s Applefest celebrations and throughout the Labour Day long weekend.
There are five open award categories: Best in Show, Best Oil/Acrylic –Cameron Lang Memorial Award, Best Watercolour –Shirley Stewart Memorial Award, Best Other Medium, and Best Local Subject –a work in any medium depicting an object, event, person or place within the Mount Alexander Shire.
The Harcourt Applefest Art Show is also unique for having asignificant junior section. The engaging works submitted by younger artists ensure the Art Show committee is always delighted by emerging styles and fresh perspectives. Awards will be presented for Best Junior and Highly Commended (12 Years and Under), Best Junior and Highly Commended (13 –18Years), and Best Illustration (non-digital) work on paper.
DINOSAURS in Harcourt
Paleontologist and PhD student at Monash University Jake Kotevski is set to make a special presentation ‘Dinosaurs in Harcourt’. His PhD project is focused on the evolution and presence of carnivorous dinosaurs in Victoria from 125-100 million years ago.
Jake can trace his inspiration back to Jurassic Park, where he first learnt the words ‘dinosaur’ and ‘paleontologist’, and grew up with no other goal in his mind.
Ever since he watched the tyrannosaurus burst through the gates in the rain, Jake has dreamed of working with the predatory dinosaurs known as theropods.
Jake’s PhD has given him the opportunity to work with the Australian theropod dinosaurs, and he looks forward to sharing information about them with everyone at Harcourt Applefest!
Jake Kotevski will present ‘Dinosaursin Harcourt’.
ELIZA to delight
Eliza Hull will be among the local performers to grace the stage at Saturday’s Applefest celebrations.
Eliza is an award-winning musician. Her music has been described as ‘stirring, captivating and heartfelt’. She is regularly played on radio nationally and internationally including on ABC, RN, BBC, Double Jand Triple J. She has performed on ABC’s Q&A and also at SXSW in Austin, Texas and Big Sound Festival to showcase and present a panel on accessibility.
Her songs are also featured in ABC KIDS TV show And Then Something Changed, ABC’s The Heights and American TV shows Awkward, Teen Wolf and Saving Hope
Recently Eliza was awarded the Music Victoria ‘Amplify’ award, the APRA mentorship for women in music, the National Leadership Award from the Australia Council and Arts Access Australia and The Women In Music Award.
Eliza has her fifth studio record coming out shortly, which will feature Here They Come and Running Underwater. The EP is produced by Georgia Sallybanks (Odette) and Pip Norman.
“I am so excited to be performing with my band at Harcourt Applefest. Especially
because it’s an event for everyone, especially families.” Eliza said.
“It’s always such awonderful feeling at the festival. Iwill be sharing brand new songs off my new EP, which is due out this year. I’m off to the UK on tour in May, so am looking forward to sharing these songs to alocal audience before going.”
Eliza is making change in the music industry. The time is now for greater representation of disabled musicians, and Eliza is ahugepart of this movement.

Taradale Festival is back
After atwo-year break due to the pandemic, the renowned Taradale Mineral Springs Festival is making its return in 2023. As in previous years, the festival is to be held on the Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend –Sunday March 12.
The Mineral Springs Festival Committee is planning to make this year’s event the biggest and best in its history. Attractions will include more than 50 stands offering gourmet food, wine, craft beer, gin and whisky. There will also be jewellery, aCFA display and activities, aclassic car display, acoustic and rock music, plus many children’s activities such as face painting, plaster painting, storytelling and avisit by Captain Koala. Taradale Mineral Springs Festival Committee president, Peter Phillips, said they had worked for many months
to assemble agreat lineup of stallholders and entertainment for this year’s event.
“We also have araffle with more than $7000 in prizes up for grabs, including a$5000 travel prize courtesy of Broadhurst Property, with tickets just $5 each,” Peter said.
The festival will run from 10am-4pm and entry is $5, with free admission for children under 15. All proceeds go towards Taradale Volunteer Community Groups to assist with local projects.
“We are verygrateful to our major sponsors Castlemaine Slate and Stone, Good Earth Garden Supplies, Interior Solutions, Malmsbury Bakery and Metro Taradale for supporting the event and making it possible,” Peter said.
Panzerotti –aportablefeast
Italian food really does land on the tastebuds and give us asatisfying food experience like no other.
While you are enjoying all the fun of the Taradale Mineral Springs Festival, you’ll be able to enjoy some very special and thoroughly delicious Italian food that is perfect for when you are on the go. The unique food truck, Taste of Puglia, has cooks aboard who freshly make Italian traditional food called panzerotti.
Panzerotti are friedpastries filled with cheese, tomato sauce, and oregano from a region of south Italy called Puglia, and the team behind Taste of Puglia arethe firstones to introduce it to Australia.
This food is perfect for festivals. Easily eaten, it doesn’t need cutlery or plates to be consumed people and can just walk away with it, freshly made and hot, and the taste is superb.
You will be able to select from up to eight different flavours and vegan and vegetarian options areincluded.
Rafael’s Coffee, anyone?
When you’re out and about enjoying the vibe of acolourful and exciting event, there’s nothing quite like adelicious, warming coffee to keep you on the go.
At the Taradale Mineral Springs Festival, you’ll be able to get one of your favourite coffee hits from popular and well-known Rafael’s Coffee.
Rafael’s Coffee is afamily owned and operated artisan coffee roastery basedin Lancefield. They have beenhitting our tastebuds since 2012 when the family’s quest for local quality and freshly roasted coffee inspired the establishment of their boutique roastery. They create their own blends as well as offer seasonal single-origin coffee beans and blends. To keep the coffee journey interesting, they are constantly on the lookout for beans from regions and growers around the world.
And with apersonaland customised service, you know your Rafael’s Coffee will be one of the best.
Looking forhens?
Like the idea of fresh eggswhen you need them? They are better than ever when the trip to source them isn’t the supermarket but anesting box or two in ashedinyour own back garden. There are great spinoff benefits to having your home-laid eggs–the cheeky little chooks themselves. Notonly are many of them prolific egg producers but they look colourful and can be very characterful as the wander through your garden. And they help keep unwanted pests like slugs off your flowers and vegetables.
Ifyou are thinking about purchasing somehens –even arooster –haveachat to Bill or Graeme of Fancy Chooks Newstead who’ll be at the Taradale Mineral Springs Festival with your future feathered friends for sale.
They breed and sell ahugearray of poultry breeds and can recommend which one is best for your situation. Some people want ‘pretty’ chooks, others want massive egg producers. Perhaps amix of both would be best?

Notthe placefor geese
Gilli Bruni,Pipers Creek/Malmsbury
Re. 'Safety concern' (Opinions,February 28).
Malmsbury's famous town geese are agreat looking bird. But the town centre, botanical gardens and streets are not the place for the geese (livestock).
They are not anative species, they were introduced to the town by someone dumping them because they didn't want or love them, multiplying over time like rabbits.
They are dirty birds leaving aminefield of crap everywhere and they are bullies; the large drakes can be protective and aggressive.
In years gone by you could swim in the lake, catch redfin, see native waterfowl, black swans, wood ducks, water rats and yes, even platypus, but not anymore.
They have been hunted out by the geese leaving the lake like astinking septic pond.
Maybe the shire should grow some spine and take care of the safety issue. If they were sheep, goats or cattle, it would be adifferent story; they would have been impounded. The safety concern is not so much the speed limit, but the fact that livestock are on the roadway.
Misused and wasted
Hans Paas,Castlemaine
Your report 'Dodgy job on resurfacing' (Express,February 28) prompts me to wonder.
At the same time the orgy of spending on unnecessary resurfacing works while secondary roads are still littered with potholes and 'roadworks' signage where nothing is being done is ascandal.
The fact that taxpayers' money is being misused and wasted should be investigated.
Perhaps the Opposition, minor parties or independents could move for an upper house inquiry to try to get to the bottom of this dreadful mess. Why are serviceable roads being resurfaced while dangerous ones are left closed more than five months after the floods? Are lucrative contracts with favoured companies taking priority over emergency maintenance that is causing chaos and worse on our roads?
Gambling raises its ugly head
Sue Allen, CampbellsCreek
Re. 'Romsey pub push' (Midland Express,February 28).
The people of Romsey fought hard to prevent poker machines in their town, setting aprecedent for Castlemaine and later Euroa and Inverloch.
Once again, under the guise of 'community oriented, family friendly sports pub', the scourge of pokies gambling raises its ugly head.
This development shows only hyped up positivity, needing alot of money. Underneath there's family breakdown, mental illness, misery, povertyand the stench of social stigma. The community loses.
Forward-thinking council
BruceHedge,Newham
Last Thursday Ihad the pleasure of attending Macedon Ranges Shire Council's launch of their 'Cool(Er) Changes' initiative at the Kyneton Town Hall.
The council and councillors and especially the environment Department are to be congratulated for initiating this excellent progressive policy, which begins to seriously address the most pressing issue of our times. Climate change.
After welcomes from the CEO, mayor and stakeholders, we were invited to contribute via Post-It notes to arange of issues confronting our area in coming years.
Over the past four years, conversations throughout the shire have taken place about climate change, and the facilitators have said that Macedon Shire’s forward thinking and interest is most unusual and leading in Victoria.
Reading intelligent notes coming from the general public gave me hope that at long last, we’re beginning to realise the seriousness of coming years. Suggestions such as abroad network of EV chargers throughout the shire, compulsory double glazing on new houses, and subsidised retrofitting to existing houses were small, hopeful signs that arealeffort is happening to reduce energy use in the shire.
Food security, biodiversity and biolinks for native animals were all mentioned as other issues to be addressed.
Chatting tocouncillors after the event
gave me real hope that this is not just another talk-fest. We are very fortunate to have such aforward-thinking council.
Alast word from alocal, Olivia, 14, “Every generation is going to be impacted by climate change, different generations are going to be affected in different ways. Youth arethe groupofpeople who arethe mostconcerned and passionate about it as it will impact us for our entire life”. Full disclosure. She’s my granddaughter.
No onefollows up IanPowell, Malmsbury
Thankyou Sue Love for raising the issueofthe dangerous speed that motorists do in the Malmsbury township ('Safety concern', Opinions, February 28).
Ihavecomplained multiple times to the Malmsbury Police, Kyneton Police and the Victoria Police number if you do not want the sirens.
No one follows up!
Notonly were twogeese killed by a speeding and inconsiderate motorist but other geese in the gaggle had to be euthanised.
Howlongbefore achild is killed if speeds are not regularly monitored?
Iwitness every day double bogie trucks speedthrough thetown especially down hill towards Taradale. No hope in stopping should apedestrian step on to the road.
It's time to reduce the town speed limit to40km/h 24 hours aday.

Bird of theMonth
Welcome to Bird of the Month, presented by Connecting Country and BirdLife
Castlemaine District.
Each month we’re taking aclose look at one special local bird species. We’re excited to join forces to deliver you adifferent bird each month, seasonally adjusted, and welcome suggestions from the community. We are blessed to have the brilliant Jane Rusden and Damian Kelly from BirdLife Castlemaine District writing about our next bird of the month, accompanied by Jane’s stunning photos.
Gang gang cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum)
Unlike other members of the cockatoo family who stand out with their colour and raucous noise, the gang gang can be quite unobtrusive with its overall grey plumage. Males can be distinguished by their distinctive red head with its wispy crest.
Taxonomically they are in aseparate genus from the other cockatoos (Callocephalon). Despite their colour, they are more closely related to galahs than they are to the black cockatoos. There have been afew isolated examples of hybridisation with galah and one with a little corella.
And as an inhabitant of the forests, it is often heard before it is seen. One of its distinctive calls is acreaking sound that identifies it easily. Although they often move about in groups, unlike the other more noisy cockatoos they are often fairly quiet. At times they just feed quietly on gum nuts in the upper foliage and you only notice them from the sound of the pattering of gum nut fragments as you walk underneath.
Gang gangs are confined to southern Victoria and south-east New South
Wales, usually in the highlands and adjacent moist coastal areas. There is some altitudinal movement from the higher areas to lower regions in autumn and then they can be seen in the drier, more open woodlands. At times they can be found in urban areas in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra wherever there are sufficient eucalypts. Like many of our native species, they have adapted to changes in habitat and food supplies.
Seeds of many forest eucalypts and acacias make up most of their diet, but they will also eat other plant material and insects.
Like many species, they have also adapted to eating the fruits of avariety of introduced species such as the berries of the hawthorn bush as well as fruit trees, and flocks will congregate in suitable areas. Apple orchards in particular can attract them and damage may be caused at times.
Breeding usually takes place between October and January. Nests are in tree hollows, usually high up. Females, with their string beaks, will often excavate a deeper hollow.
Normally two to three eggs are laid and both parents do the incubation and feeding.
They are uncommon in the drier areas closer to Castlemaine, but they are recorded occasionally with recent records at Guildford, Yandoit and Mount Alexander.
You are more likely to see them in the wetter forests such as around Daylesford and Trentham.
Connecting Country is anot-for-profit community group that works to increase, enhance and restore biodiversity across the Mount Alexander region of centralVictoria. For more information, or to make a donation, visit: connectingcountry.org.au
Help to access sickpay
Casual workers in the Macedon Ranges will have access to free assistance to sign up to the Victorian Government Sick Pay Guarantee. Golf players feel they need to make amends for last season’s grand final when Lancefield caused amajor upset by winning the flag from fourth place. And the Tigers are keen to make it three flags in succession, knowing they have astronger side than last season with the return of topliners Aaron Young and Aaron Andrews from metro.
The other matches at Kyneton on Saturday are the division three grand final between Macedon and Diggers Rest, and the division two preliminary final between Romsey and Diggers Rest.
Kyneton Golf has abattle-hardened lineup that deserves to be in the grand final after acomfortable first semi-final victory over Gisborne, then the preliminary final effort against Romsey, which only lost one home and away match but departed from the finals in straight sets after losing to Lancefield and Golf.
The Redbacks are not far away from claiming their first-ever top division flag and will be in contention again next season.
Romsey coach Gary Templar acknowledged Golf had been the better side despite the close margin on agoodgreen.
“We’ve shown improvement from within, and hopefully there will be further improvement next season,” Templar said.
The two division one grand finalists are very comfortable playing on grass, and experienced greenkeeper Craig Vincent hopes to have asurface in top order once again.
Last season Kyneton Golf was heavily reliant on ace skipper Graham Edwards, but his departure has been covered by
the inclusion of Lancefield’s great player, five times Champion of Champions Peter Linehan.
On Saturday, Linehan began slowly by his standards, then showed his class with his rink winning by 11 shots –abig margin in afinal.
Cam Austin’s rink did well to win by five shots for Romsey, and Matt Brundell went down by one to Barry Godbolt after trailing for much of the afternoon.
Romsey led narrowly overall for most of the first half, but dropped multiple numbers as afternoon tea beckoned to trail 27-32 at the break.
Golf mayhaveexpected to break away on resumption, but it did not happen, and Romsey actually hit the front by ashot.
In the latter stages, Golf collectively outdrew their opponent, leaving their skippers with abig task.
Multiple numbers to Golf put the issue beyond doubt with acouple of ends to go, with the fina tally 57-50 after 63 ends.
In division two Macedon excelled with Gary Dickenson’s four winning by nine shots –which was the overall margin to advance the Cats to the grand final.
It was agood afternoon for Macedon, with a20-shot victory in the division three preliminary final; now Macedon has the task of trying to make amends for a17shot defeat by Diggers Rest in the second semi-final.
Ballarat –Highlands Region president Ian Guymer and the executive wish all teams ‘good luck’ for Saturday.

Noah Tarallo won silver in the U15 2000 metres steeplechase, Charlotte Jackson won silver in the U18 2000m steeplechase and Jonathan Neethling won gold in the U16 2000m steeplechase.
Their coach Mark Carey, from Toe the Line Athletics, was thrilled with their performances. All three athletes have qualified to run in the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships in April.
Newlook forPark group
In contrast to many previous years, there was an upsurge of interest in the triennial meeting of the committee of management of Lancefield Park Recreation Reserves Inc held last week.
The evening meeting in the Laurie Green Pavilion attracted more than 50 locals, and individual park user group members briefly summarised their specific interests and activities over the past 12 months, and earlier, and how they are keen to effectively work together for the betterment of the park and community.
When it came to accepting nominations for positions for the next three years, it soon became apparent there were many more nominations than the maximum of 12 allowed.
ADELWP representative present said it would be preferable if each user group be confined to having one member on the umbrella committee; community interest group individuals had nominations accepted.
Both long-serving committee members and energetic new members were elected.
Those re-elected included Syd Green, Judy Stammers, Stephen (Fred)King, Roger Lavelle, Hugh Parks and Bill Balcam. Putting their hands up to get involved for the first time were Andrew Smith, Kim Mouser, Dina Robotham, Angela Dickins, Kathryn Lewis and Jeff Smith.
After being elected, the new committee held its first meeting, and Kathryn Lewis was elected as chairperson, taking over the role from life time Lancefield resident Syd Green who has been on the park committee for well over 40 years, with the majority of this time spent as president.
While new to the committee, she is not anewcomer, having moved to Lancefield
in 2001, then spending most of her time working full-time in Melbourne.
Moving towards retirement, Ms Lewis told the Express she was looking to more involved in the Lancefield community, initially thinking of joining acommittee or two.
She admitted she was alittleoverwhelmed by being elected as chairperson –mainly due to having to follow the lead of alocal Lancefield resident –Syd Green!
However, she is confident her diverse life experience will put her in good stead, and is keen to work with and draw on the wisdom of the long term committee members and the enthusiasm of the new.
Ms Lewis voiced confidence in the new committee and said it was pleasing to see so many park user groups having representation.
“I was impressed to hear of the amazing work being done by so many, and how all are looking to work effectively together for the betterment of our park and community," she said.
“The Park is truly the heart of Lancefield.”
New secretary Bill Balcam, who is president of Lancefield Junior Football Club, has along and successful business background, and was aMelbourne Football Club director for 10 years (He is a Demons’ life member).
“This committee has across section of abilities, and recognises there is much to do to enhance and improve Lancefield Park.”
He said there is plenty of enthusiasm about the task ahead.
The long-term contribution of Syd Green and Judy Stammers was acknowledged with the new committee carrying an appropriate motion of appreciation.

Big basketball for the Ranges
Later this year between 150 –200 basketballers are expected to descend on the Macedon Ranges for ahigh-profile Masters tournament.
“We have booked the stadiums at Kyneton, Woodend and Romsey for the weekend of September 16 and 17,” tournament coordinator Nathaniel Slater told the Express.
With along involvement in basketball at various levels, Slater lives at Romsey and he said he hoped to work with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s economic and development department and any businesses that wanted to promote the event.
Masters basketball began in 1998, and has grown to the stage where about six tournaments are held annually over weekends at different parts of the state.
“This kind off event put around $50,000 into the Maffra community recently ,with atournament, accommodation, food and drink for over 100 visitors,”Slater said.
At the Macedon Ranges tournament there will be different age groupings—35-45 men’s and Over 45 men’s competitions, and Over 35 women.
All competitions are handicapped according to the average age of the players in each team, meaning ayouhger team will have to give older opposition appoints head start.
Slater said the finals will probably be played at either the Woodend Buffalo Stadium or the Kyneton Stadium, where both have seating for spectators.
“We will have abig nightcelebrating the event and come together on the Saturday night, at avenue yettobedetermined.”.
The Masters are also looking for sponsors to help with the event,
Exceeding expectations
Competing for the first time in the Victorian AGrade Over 50s competition, the Sunbury Macedon Ranges veterans’ team exceeded expectations by being runners-up in the strong competition.
The final between unbeaten Sunbury Macedon Ranges and Ringwood North (third) was athrillerplayed at Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne, late in February.
The local side had never played Ringwood North or second-placed Geelong previously due to washouts. In the 40 overs final, Sunbury Macedon was aslight favourite but battled to reach 6/108 at a below-par run rate.
Rohan Lyle scored 37 and some smaller partnerships pushed the tally to 170 all out from 38.3 overs.
North Ringwood rated their bowling as the best they had produced all season.
Sunbury Macedon struck quickly with the new ball, and soon had the opposition
struggling at 3/24.
Although up with the run rate, the match was in the balance with six wickets down and 64 runs required. From 7/165, the visitors got home with nine balls to spare.
Worthy winners in atight match.
OVER 60s CARNIVAL
The annual Over 60s Cricket Carnival, in its 10th year, takes place at Echuca on Sunday, March 19.
Sunbury Macedon Ranges is drawn in first division, and has two Australian Over 60s players –captain Dale Thornton and Peter Dudderidge –inthe squad.
They have recently returned from the Over 60s World Cup in Barbados.
Teams from all around Victoria and South Australia will vie for honours over five days, with hundreds of players and supporters booking out area accommodation.
The Ranges Veterans’ feels they can give agood account of themselves.
specifically to help pay for referees –one of the major costs. There’s also court hire, insurances and food requirements to cover.
Businesses or individuals in the Macedon Ranges who would like to be involved in the bonanza tournament in September can contact Nathaniel Slater on 0428 235 669 or email wildcatsbasketball166@ gmail.com for further details.
The first Pan Pacific Masters Games was held back in 1995, and Masters’ basketball has afirm following in Victoria.
Coming tocountry areas to play is adrawcard for many Masters’ basketballers, and the Macedon Ranges has much to offer for family and friends of players who are competing.
Slater (pictured at left) currently plays with the Wildcats in the Masters and also plays domestically with Fingers Crossed in the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association senior men’s competition.

Bonanza forRomsey
Bill West
McIntyre Cup cricket qualifying finals begin this weekend, with the final six system receiving ashake-up after last home and away round results on Saturday.
Previously unbeaten Gisborne lost narrowly as adetermined Sunbury United batting brigade overhauled the Dragons’ formidable 295 in the last over of the day; but the big beneficiary was Ben Way’s Romsey brigade, which leapt up the ladder from fourth to second place with an incredible 17.42 points from an outright win over bottom-of-the-ladder East Sunbury.
The Redbacks could hardly contain themselves when they learnt they were suddenly second on the ladder.
Why? Because not only do they earn ahome final against fifth-placed Bacchus Marsh, but they also fall into ‘lucky loser' favouritism to remain in the finals.
It works this way –Gisborneshould have little trouble in accounting for sixth-placed Rupertswood at Gardiner Reserve; and inform United (third) and Diggers Rest/Bulla (fourth) clash with the loser eliminated.
Romsey captain-coach Ben Way took arealistic punt with an early declaration at 7/248 after 51.4 overs the first day against East Sunbury at the John McMahon Reserve, then his multi-pronged attack delivered to capture 16 wickets on Saturday.
East Sunbury succumbed for 99 in 43 overs in its first innings, with Aaron Paterson claiming career best figures of 6-15; Taylor Stevenson and Corey Day claimed two each.
Romsey then rattled up 5/94 declared, and East Sunbury’s season ended with a less than impressive 72 from 23 overs, losing five wickets for 11 runs near the top of the order.
Paceman Louis Moor did the damage with 5/22 and Darrin Jewell captured 2-3.
An early finished for the Redbacks, who have three sides in the finals across the grades.
Gisborne District Cricket Association’s competitions manager, Rob McIntyre, said it was great to see fair dinkum two-day qualifying finals going ahead after two seasons of COVID disruptions.
McIntyre and the GDCA executive wish all finalists the best of fortune, hoping for fine weather through the finals series.
Sunbury United must have received a shock to find they had slipped to third place despite athrilling victory over Gisborne. United finished on 90.40 points, with Romsey sneaking ahead into second spot on 91.76.
Gisborne has won plenty of its matches easily, but this time United’s opening batsmen put on astand of 149 (Ashan Ranaweera 91, Damien Edwards 800; Gisborne fought back but alaterun aball45 from Amrit Sandhu took United to 9/296.
To think that miserly on-target bowlers Jarryd Vernon and Mick Allen would concede 91 runs without awicket was unthinkable based on their form this season.
Leigh Brennan and Riley Vernon each claimed three wickets for the Dragons, who will still be logical flag favourites in most people’s eyes.
In pursuit of 240, Bacchus Marsh stumbled to be dismissed for 152 (James Lidgett 54, T. Dickinson 50 –G.Welikalage 5-67) against Diggers Rest/Bulla.
Sunbury Kangaroos gained an overdue victory by scoring 9/211 (C. Woolley 82 n.o., J. King 61) in pursuit of Wallan’s 8/209 c.c.
Alengthy rain disruption at Salesian College on the first day deprived Woodend of agreat chance to sneak into the finals by toppling Rupertswood.
Woodend’s opener Marcus Stewart scored afine 114 (15 fours) in his side’s 3/189 declared, with Xavier Tadd 34 n.o. and Chris Large 31 assisting.
Rupertswood, knowing adrawwould retain sixth spot, batted slowly but kept wickets intact to finish at 4/120 from 60 overs –match drawn.
The Woodsmen showed distinct improve-
ment towards the season, and could further improve next season such is the young talent on the list.
Qualifying finals over two days are: Gisborne vRupertswood; Romsey vBacchus Marsh, and Sunbury United vDiggers Rest/ Bulla.
Macedon in finals
Macedon cricketers will play in the Johnstone Shield finals after defeating Eynesbury on Saturday.
Abig partnership between Todd Coppin 98 and Cameron Howlett 71 put Macedon in astrongposition, and captain Daniel Trotta contributed an unbeaten 45 toreach awinning 5/244 and take over fourth place as a result of Romsey toppling Aintree.
Other scores: Aintree 128 and 102 lost to Romsey 8/220 declared (P. Brady 65, M. Richardson 45); Kilmore 9/338 c.c. dKyneton 134 (B. Buttler 5-27) and 4/103; Bacchus Marsh 267 dRiddell 213.; Sunbury United 6/409 dGisborne 8/261 (A. Nichols 89, J. McKibbin 61).
Jensen Shield: top side Hanging Rock easily defended 9/286 by bowling out second-placed Rupertswood for 146. Steve Zubrycki claimed four wickers to go with his century.
Other scores: Malmsbury 151 and 4/215 (M. Pruden91, M. Cox 81) lost to Lancefield 205 and 4/127 (A. Sinclair 45); Blackwood 200 (B. Whitehouse 65, L. Whitehouse 51) lost to St Anthonys 6/201 (Z. Gilbert 95).

Malmsbury
Cricket Club is proud of their Club North players, despite their loss in asemi-final against Lancefield on Saturday.
It was the first finals appearance for the Berries' third side.
Lancefield rattled up an imposing 263 from 35 overs, with afirstwicket stand of 149 between Nathan Malone 99 and Christian Keogh 55. Matt Bowden hit aswift unbeaten 68, with G. Marshall the best of the bowlers with 1-38.
Malmsbury batters tried hard but lost wickets regularly to be dismissed for 106, with Tauskus, Turner and Webber all making 17.
In the other semi-final Macedon 6/189 (M. Waddington 61 n.o., S. Harrison 40) lost to Gisborne 6/214 (Peter Sankey 101 not out).

On agreen deck the Berries were bowled out by the visiting Lancefield Jensen Shield side for 151 (Mark Pruden 54) and drizzle on the first day stopped play with the match evenly balanced.
Aquick 57 from J. Reagan enabled Lancefield to reach 205.
