Volunteer pilots have helped make life-changing spinal surgery possible for Kyneton farmer Krystal Bourke.

The 31-year-old needed specialist spinal surgery at a Sydney hospital but was unable to travel there, until a group of generous volunteers from Angel Flight stepped in to fly her to and from her treatment ... for free!

"Angel Flight is amazing for us country people who can't get to appointments," Krystal said.

"Sydney's a long way from here and I was unable to get there any other way,

money-wise and travel-wise.

"I couldn't drive because of my spine, so Angel Flight got me there, and a whole lot quicker than if you had to go on a train."

Krystal said she found out about Angel Flight by chance at the Deniliquin Ute Muster.

"They had a stall there and I went to see them and that's how I found out about the flights," she said.

"You get your GP to send a referral off to them and then they find you a pilot and it's all volunteers with their own aircraft and their own time."

Death returned, new deputy Macedon Ranges Shire Council has returned Annette Death to the role of mayor for 12 months, and elected Janet Pearce deputy mayor.

“It’s a privilege to be elected for a second term as mayor and I’m excited to continue the great work that has already been started alongside deputy mayor Pearce, my fellow councillors and our executive team,” Cr Death said.

“I’d like to thank my family, my fellow councillors, council staff and the community for their ongoing support, and I’d particularly like to acknowledge Cr Jennifer Anderson for her contributions as deputy mayor in the last term.”

Cr Death was returned to the role by a 5-4 vote with Cr Pearce also declaring her hand for the role.

Cr Pearce was elected deputy mayor in a 5-4 vote that edged out former deputy mayor Jennifer Anderson who sought a second term in the role.

This is the final 12 months for the current sitting council across its four-year term. An election will take place in 2025.

Cr Death said it was important for the council to "hit the ground running" with many strategic items before them for decision in the next 10 months.

"It will be a race to the finish line to complete everything we hope to achieve," she said.

Krystal was even able to take her assistance dog with her for the sixweek stay, first in hospital and then in rehab at Orange.

The pair flew back to Kyneton Airfield last Thursday on a Cessna 210 belonging to volunteer Sydney pilot Nick McGlone.

Nick said it was rewarding to be able to help people and it gave him a good excuse to fly!

"You get people from country towns who tell you how long it's taken them in the past to drive," he said.

"There was a lady I was bringing down from Grafton, in northern New South Wales, and she had a daugh-

ter who needed regular treatment and they'd been driving and renting places when they went to Sydney and they almost had to sell their house.

"And then she told me she'd found out about Angel Flight and it just saved the day for them."

Angel Flight's support extends beyond air travel; they provide volunteer drivers and accommodation when necessary. The organisation also covers the fuel costs and landing fees for their pilots, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder those in need.

Firefighters worked through the night to contain a grass and scrub fire at Mount Macedon last week.

Macedon Group Brigades were called to a property on Syndicate Road just after 4pm on Wednesday.

Units from Mount Macedon, Macedon, Bullengarook, Hesket, Newham, Woodend, Gisborne and Riddells Creek attended for what would be a long ordeal.

Crews remained on scene through the night to monitor the fire and were eventually released midmorning Thursday.

The fire, which spread across about 1.5 hectares, reportedly started as a burn off the day before and got away the next day in strong winds.

HOMES UNDER THREAT Two homes were under threat when another grassfire took hold at Barkers Creek last Wednesday.

Local CFA crews were called to the scene at Blakeley Road about 1pm and six tankers and air support took half an hour to contain the spread to less than one acre.

The fire was believed to have been sparked by an angle grinder.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, nine tankers and air support tackled a grassfire in Muckleford, which was believed to have been sparked by a motorbike.

The fire burnt through four hectares before being brought under control.

Newstead CFA captain Doug Richardson told the Express they had also attended a fire on Saturday November 18 at about 2pm on Boundary Gully Road in Sandon.

"The fire started due to a burn off the landowner had done in October. The burn off, located under gum trees, had burnt into the ground and continued to smoulder," Mr Richardson said.

"We had had to attend again the following day as well.

"It's okay to burn off fine fuels but people really need to leave the bigger stuff until winter."

A Macedon Ranges SES volunteer and disability advocate has been inducted into the 2023 Victorian Honour Roll of Women for her efforts.

Shanleigh Meldrum is deaf and has undertaken a variety of roles in her career as a sensory disability professional and as a volunteer with the Gisborne and Woodend SES units.

Participating in emergency management forums, the 29-year-old highlights the importance of disability access and inclusion during major emergency events.

Shanleigh’s advocacy has contributed to long-term community benefits for deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind youth in regional Victoria, and improved awareness of their needs in both mental and physical health and emergency management contexts.

"My current role is senior youth officer at Deaf Hub Bendigo," she said.

"I am the creator and project manager for our Youth Program 'Get Engaged with Your Life!' (2022-2024) that supports regional/rural Victorian deaf, hard of haring and deafblind young people aged 12-25 years. This includes facilitating Youth Spaces in various locations across regional Victoria including a fortnightly Youth Space in Gisborne that has been running for a year and a half.

"I also oversee programs for under 12s and families."

Shanleigh does consultation and advocacy work in the emergency management sector on a voluntary basis.

She also created the Macedon Ranges Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community Group.

"By meeting regularly it enables families and deaf and hard of hearing members of the community to connect with one another," she said.

Shanleigh said volunteering with the two local SES units gave her the chance to give back to her community as well as the opportunity to learn new skills.

"I have been a member with Gisborne, my primary unit, for 6.5 years and they are incredibly accommodating," she said.

"Our members have participated in Deaf Awareness and Auslan training to improve their knowledge and ability to communicate with me, all training I plan on implementing in Woodend.

"We have been able to make reasonable adjustments to enable me to participate in as much operational activities as I can, including Road Crash Rescue."

Shanleigh grew up in Gisborne and now lives in Langley.

Old, discarded laptops and electronics from the Macedon Ranges are changing lives of everyday people from Hoi An, Vietnam.

Kyneton-Gisborne-based lawyer John Herron is leading a ‘laptop drive’ to connect people from Hoi An with more job and educational opportunities.

“The cost of a good laptop equates to about six months’ wages in Vietnam,” Mr Herron said.

“It’s not affordable to the average working person, but especially for those who have no regular income.”

Mr Herron learnt of the need through his online Vietnamese tutor Ha (vo thì Hà).

They began lessons nine months ago via a video link and all ran smoothly until one day Ha was 30 minutes late to their scheduled session.

“She eventually managed to contact me and was stressed because her laptop had broken.

She explained she had trouble locating one to use,” Mr Herron said.

Soon to visit Vietnam on business, Mr Herron purchased her an inexpensive laptop in Australia before he departed.

The simple transaction meant Ha could continue her online teaching without much delay. Her gratitude made Mr Herron realise just how valuable connecting the community through technology

and they will clump, make air pockets that are too large and break the connection in part of our compost pile.

Nutrition: It is true paper and cardboard are very high in carbon, but, be aware they have little else of nutritional value to add to our pile.

On the other hand, straw, autumn leaves and woody garden prunings, have lots of other residual nutrients that will help keep the ‘microbe party’ going for the duration. A paper or cardboard heavy compost can finish up pretty lifeless and empty.

I’m not saying we should not use paper and cardboard in our compost, but I do suggest we should; be careful to avoid contamination, think about how the ingredient will create texture in the pile (tearing up and pre-soaking is almost always a good idea) and, not over-do these ingredients – keeping our cardboard and paper to no more than five per cent of the pile’s ingredient list.

Paper and cardboard are readily available, free ingredients that are easy additions to our compost piles.

Made predominantly from the cellulose and lignin of trees, these ingredients are very high in carbon – paper has approximately 175 parts of carbon to one-part nitrogen, and cardboard approximately 350:1!

So, they seem like they should be great additions to our compost piles, balancing up the nitrogen-rich food scraps, leafy garden trimmings or manures we might be putting in our piles. This is true, but paper and cardboard come with some warnings for composters wanting to make a good quality, safe compost.

Contamination: Many forms of paper and cardboard are now made with plastic coatings or toxic additions, none of which we want in our compost piles. Most inks these days are okay to put in the compost, but glossy coatings on many brochures and boxes can be dangerous, or leave fine shreds of micro-plastics in our compost so are best put in the recycling.

Any food-grade paper or cardboard product that repels water or oil, is a worry. These products might contain chemicals, like the dreaded PFAS, that has impacted the lives of so many CFA volunteers. We don’t want PFAS in our composts or our soils.

To test for this, we can put a drop of olive oil (not other oils) on the product, if the oil beads on the surface, don’t put it in the compost, throw it in the landfill bin (we can also think about not supporting its production in the future – because there is no such thing as ‘away’ to throw things, really), if the oil soaks in, or spreads rather than beads it should be okay in our pile.

We might be better off avoiding single-use packaging completely.

Texture: Paper and cardboard come to us in so many different shapes and textures, from office paper, to egg cartons, from disposable food packaging to the newspaper you might be reading these words from, each behaving differently in our compost pile.

Layers of dry newspaper can form hard impenetrable clumps in our pile, but the same newspaper, separated into sheets, torn up or scrunched up and pre-soaked can be a wonderful addition to our piles. Similarly, egg cartons, pre-soaked and torn up, are great texture in our compost, but, dropped whole and dry in our piles

Increasing cost-of-living pressures has seen a surge in demand for local foodbank services.

The Kindness Collective Kyneton Foodbank coordinator Lisa Jackson said community food donations were greatly appreciated in the lead up to Christmas as more people signed up for the service.

"Over the past couple of weeks we've had more and more people register with the rising cost of everything," she said.

"We're finding that people who are working, as well as those who are not, have been in need of support."

Ms Jackson said there were about 400 people registered for the foodbank service, which provides free food for Macedon Ranges residents facing hardship.

The needs of each individual / family is assessed and a 'credit budget' allocated for them to 'shop' the shelves, fridge and freezer.

"People's needs are always different and we can find out how best to assist after we talk to them about their situation," Ms Jackson said.

"Some people only need short-term relief while others may need more ongoing support. We can also link people to other services in the region that may be helpful."

The Kindness Collective Kyneton runs the foodbank alongside its op shop, dropin space, soup kitchen and crisis relief.

The items from the foodbank come from community and business donations, and items purchased with the funds raised through The Kindness Collective Op Shop. Meals are also packed and frozen from whatever is left from the community lunches held each month.

Donations are always welcomed. Some of the items currently in demand include shampoo/conditioner, washing detergent, baked beans / tinned spaghetti, jar sauces and soap.

Coffee club Adventure for landscape protection The Country LGBTIQ+ Inclusion Program’s monthly Rainbow Coffee Club is coming to Romsey.

In partnership with Romsey Neighbourhood House, the social group run by Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health in Kyneton for the last two years, will be doing a second gathering a month. The aim is to connect local LGBTIQ+ adults in the east of the shire with each other over good coffee and conversation.

The Rainbow Coffee Club is one of the initiatives of the Country LGBTIQ+ Inclusion Program, known as CLIP, which supports the health and wellbeing of adult lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people in the Macedon Ranges.

“Being part of a community and feeling socially connected can really have a positive impact on a person’s mental and physical health,” says the organiser of the group, Belinda Brain.

“These coffee catch-ups are a great way to meet new people and create meaningful social connections and a sense of belonging to the community.”

Romsey Rainbow Coffee Club will meet at the Romsey Community Co-Op on the second Friday of the month from 11am to 12pm, with the first to take place on Friday December 8.

Gisborne’s Jye Tebble has hiked the notorious Pacific Crest Trail in the USA in support of Biolinks Alliance’s work to restore and protect largescale landscapes across Central Victoria.

Jye’s interest in the organisation’s work sparked after attending the Biolinks Alliance’s Rewilding Central Victoria expert panel event in May. He soon offered to fundraise for the cause as he set off on a hike from May 16 to October 14, along the celebrated trail.

“The Biolinks Alliance are making a significant impact in my local area... and I was so impressed by the quality of work they do,” Jye said.

“I wanted to show people that the effects of the climate change and biodiversity crises are right now and right here in our backyards, but there are people fighting to heal the damage.”

Along the magnificent 4265 kilometre hike, winding from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington, Jye shared it was often physically and mentally very taxing. Jye and his fellow group of hikers who he met on the trail from Europe, America and Australia, were also devastated to see many areas the trail passes through had been burnt from wildfires.

“It was painful to witness the subsequent devastation,” Jye said.

“However, as many challenges we and our environment face across the world, I am inspired by the impact others have had and the potential that every one of us can have, be it big or small.

“I previously thought I had to solve the big issues in climate change to feel like I was contributing to the solution, but now I realise that even just talking about it can make a significant difference.”

Jye said the greatest reward of the hike was developing a deeper connection with nature and it was something he now cherished and is grateful for after finishing the hike.

“Walking along the pristine cascading rivers within Yosemite National Park was my favourite part of the trail,” said Jye. “Watching the fish swim under the glistening waters and following the waterfalls down hill and into alpine meadows were some of the best moments I’ve had in my life. “It was always a much better day when I saw wildlife such as marmots, deer and squirrels running amuck, as well as the one bear and coyote I spotted.”

So far, Jye has raised about $1550 of his $4265 target for Biolinks Alliance.

Biolinks Alliance’s Executive Director Dr Sophie Bickford said the organisation was grateful for Jye’s support.

Protecting the valley’s biodiversity Work is under way on a biodiversity audit that aims to find out more about the creatures and plants that call the Harcourt Valley home.

The second stage of the audit follows ongoing advocacy by members of the Harcourt Valley Landcare group, who have been calling for an on-ground audit to be completed before Mount Alexander Shire Council proceeds with the strategic planning project – 'Plan Harcourt'.

Harcourt Valley Landcare president, Terry Willis, said the group was relieved to know their voices had been heard and that the council was pushing on with the second stage of this audit.

“We can’t protect the plants and animals that share our beautiful valley with us if we don’t know what they are – and neither can the council," Terry said.

"We believe that deep environmental understanding about the landscape should be a fundamental and an early part of any town planning process and we’re pleased that we’ve contributed, not only to a better understanding of our local biodiversity, but to the way that councils will approach planning in the future."

'Plan Harcourt' is the document that will guide the development of Harcourt, which has been earmarked for substantial growth. Features of the planning process include rezoning land that has historically been zoned farming, to allow for development, and consideration of environmental protections.

Harcourt Valley Landcare is advocating for the protection of waterways such as Barkers Creek and its tributary Picnic Gully Creek, together with wildlife corridors such as Elys Lane, Douglas Lane, Leafy Lane, Shady Lane, Eagles Rd and Craigie Street.

“The river red gums, long-leaved box and grey box trees along these lane ways are just beautiful,” Terry said.

“They’re so important for our native animals, but research tells us that they’re also

incredibly important for our own health." Trees reduce temperatures and mitigate climate change. Studies have also shown that crime rates are lower in areas near trees.

According to research by Latrobe PhD graduate, Dr Jess Lawton, the trees along these lanes provide hollows for creatures like the brush-tailed phascogale, a small mammal whose range has shrunk significantly across the state but whose population is in good health in the area surrounding Leanganook.

Environmental consultants have begun visiting key sites, assessing whether the proposed growth area includes habitat for threatened species including the brush-tailed phascogale, the brown toadlet and the golden sun moth.

The audit is due for completion in June 2024, after which Harcourt Valley Landcare hopes the Strategic Planning team at the council will apply the new knowledge to ensure the best possible protections in the next version of 'Plan Harcourt'.

Harcourt Valley Landcare member Bron Willis, who led the group’s advocacy with the council, said people could sometimes feel powerless in the face of all the bad news that kept coming about environment and climate.

“But the antidote to that is getting vocal in our own backyard to protect what we have," Bron said.

"The Harcourt community has a really great opportunity to let the council know they are passionate about the natural values of our valley.

“We’re grateful for the relationship we’ve been able to form with the council. But it’s what we should expect – they need to know the community is paying attention.”

The brush-tailed phascogal has a large population in the area surrounding Leanganook.

Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to prepare for an increased likelihood of warmer and drier conditions over summer, as the Fire Danger Period began yesterday.

The Country Fire Authority has declared the Fire Danger Period for the Macedon Ranges began from 1am on November 27 and will end on May 1 (unless otherwise advised). No fires can be lit in the open air without a permit during this period.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council CEO, Bernie O’Sullivan, said the Bureau of Meteorology’s declaration of two key weather events – El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole – meant an increased risk this fire season.

“There are a range of useful resources available to help you prepare for the upcoming fire season, including the CFA and council websites,” he said.

The council's roadside slashing program began in November and will continue throughout December, prioritising high-use roads and working within strict guidelines to complete these works safely. An annual program to slash council-owned land and reserves across the shire is also well under way.

Regional Roads Victoria undertakes its own program to maintain state-managed roadsides. Additionally, council’s municipal fire prevention officers are conducting private property inspections across the shire to check for fire hazards, issue fire prevention Notices where appropriate and work with landowners to reduce risks.

Residents are reminded of the importance of being prepared for fires, and to ensure their properties are maintained to minimise flammable fuels including stockpiles of green waste and foliage in gutters. Free green waste disposal is available for ratepayers and tenants at the council’s transfer stations in Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has adopted the Macedon Ranges Shire Skate and BMX Strategy, which will guide the future development of skate and BMX facilities throughout the shire.

The new strategy suggests a series of short, medium and long-term priorities to upgrade or expand on the council’s six existing skateparks and four BMX tracks.

The short-term priorities include the in-progress detailed design and construction of a new skatepark in Romsey, a similar approach for new facilities in Kyneton and a site feasibility study for new facilities in Gisborne, building on concept designs proposed for Gisborne Skatepark in late 2022.

Adoption of the strategy follows another period of community consultation earlier this year.

In total, more than 9300 people attended the 161st Kyneton Show.

Kyneton Agricultural Society secretary Josephine Rutledge said perfect weather attracted record crowds for both the Friday night carnival and Show Day. “It's exciting to see that the show is something that's so loved by everybody and people seem to bring their friends and family members from far and wide,” she said.

“Very rarely can you buy a ticket to something and then experience a day of free fun that will entertain 8 year-olds to 80 year-olds and the show is unique in that way.”

President Andrew Ferrington said it was a great country show with traditional things like the pavilion competition, the horse show and all the farm animals as well as all the free activities and new initiatives like the crowd-built LEGO wall.

Over five hours, 504 people of all ages created a giant multi-coloured mosaic made of 32,000 pieces of LEGO. Each person followed a template matching the colours on their tile. Each panel was then slotted into a 3.5-metre-wide, three-metre-high wall, gradually revealing the bigger Kyneton Show themed picture.

“The show is about getting out there and doing stuff, using your hands and your head and your imagination,” Mr Ferrington said.

He said the Kyneton Agricultural Society was believed to be the first in Victoria, possibly Australia, to deliver a sustainable show by reducing its carbon footprint and offsetting the carbon it produced.

Wicked Weeders have breathed new life into an overgrown herb garden at Kyneton Botanic Gardens.

They are a group of self-confessed 'garden tragics' and they aim to revitalise a series of Kyneton's public gardens.

Members hail from Kyneton Horticultural Society and Friends of the Kyneton Botanic Gardens, and hope to grow a widespread community interest in gardening.

The herb garden, located near the botanic gardens caretaker's cottage, was in need of an overhaul and had not seen much change since 2011. It now serves as an educational and attractive living display to inspire.

Margot McDonald had Macedon Ranges' cooler climate and different plant uses in mind when designing the new garden.

"They're all plants that can cope with the cooler climate," she said.

"It's divided into sections such as: culinary use, medicinal, companion plants, and pest control.

"For anyone who's about to create a herb garden and feeling overwhelmed by the idea, or those just wanting some inspiration, this garden is one possible layout."

While most of the plantings are new, the group retained a rare juniper tree at its centre as a feature, some chives and the thyme border. Newly included, and a point of interest, is a rare native pepper bush.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council assisted the group with clearing what couldn't be saved from the old garden.

Friends of the Kyneton Botanic Gardens will maintain the garden and help it thrive.

"It's been a really rewarding experience.

The herb garden was so unloved before,"

gardener Julie Nash said.

"We have learnt a lot in the process, particularly about medicinal and culinary herbs.

"This is a beautiful contribution and it's only the beginning."

The Wicked Weeders have already assisted the Kyneton Men's Shed and an elderly couple in need of garden support.

Next on their list is rejuvenating some of the gardens around Kyneton's train station.

"Our hope is to improve some of these public areas and to make them more inviting," said Melva Ryan, president, Kyneton Horticultural Society.

"We want to recreate an interest in gardening and people have encouraged our enthusiasm."

Ross Colliver has been quietly clearing the weeds out of Sandy Creek in Riddells Creek.

Robert Hall Ross Colliver has been living on Sandy Creek in Riddells Creek for the last 12 years.

About 20 years ago, he visited a guy down on Archies Creek in Gippsland. He had turned a weed-infested gully into a semi-temperate forest, shaded and spacious inside, a beautiful place. He hadn’t had to do much he said, push back the weeds and the birds brought in seed from native plants and it had grown itself back.

Ross thought to himself: ‘That would be a really cool thing to do, to fix up a creek’, and put the thought aside.

He didn't know the seed of an idea had been planted.

Years passed. He decided he wanted to live out of Melbourne, but close enough to get into the city for work.

He spent many fruitless days driving through the Macedon Ranges, over to Hepburn Shire, and up around Castlemaine. Coming back one day, on impulse he pulled off the Calder and headed for a property he had seen online. Gap Road, Riddells Creek. It had been passed in at auction. He made an offer and suddenly

owned a small house, a run of sheds, and 150 metres of creek!

The creek was a weird tangle of blackberry and gorse, strangling the manna and peppermint gum and swamping the bracken, with an old domestic tip thrown in for good measure.

Russell and Gill up the road told him about the Stream Frontage Program and gave him the number for Dean Platt, the Melbourne Water assessor. They walked the creek, agreed to start with the blackberry, and provided a grant for a contractor to do the work.

A year later, they worked out the next year’s priorities.

Over three years they knocked over blackberry, sweet pittosporum, gorse and pines. Then the creek was pretty well on its way. Tip the balance in favour of the natives, Dean said, and they organise themselves to take over the space.

It pretty well looks after itself now. Each summer Ross cuts-and-paints blackberry and gorse regrowth, but there’s no more than a few mornings’ work in it.

It’s beautiful to look at, of course, but Ross spent a

long time looking at it before he got the feeling of the valley, full of wind and birds and kangaroos and insects, a murmur of activity changes at every point in the day, and with each season. The valley is singing, and the creek is the deeper notes of that song.

Down in the creek, it’s always cooler and quieter.

If Ross goes quietly, the wallaby looks up before she bounds off. And the wombats have returned. He likes it down there.

In the long-term, reduced rainfall will mean a drier creek, and Ross doesn’t know what that will do. Down in Riddell, in the town, he thinks most people see Sandy Creek as a dead space at the back of their property, something to be ignored, or worse really, tidied up. Tales of a town icon A new book featuring the colourful tales of Fryerstown identity and longtime resident Jimmy Cole is set to be launched this Sunday.

Tale Spinning: The Jimmy Cole Collection is an eclectic mix of stories and history from one of Fryerstown's true characters.

The book is written with warmth and intimacy by his daughter Patricia White.

Regularly seen around the town lovingly tending his sheep, Jimmy Cole will turn 98 in January and has lived in Fryerstown all his life.

Jimmy has witnessed many changes over the years, but his lifestyle remains relatively untouched. The stories in Tale Spinning share Jimmy's colourful outlook and stubborn zest for life.

from his daughter Patricia, Jimmy recounts incidents and highlights that have occurred throughout his long life with light hearted humour.

Black Horse Therapies has relocated to a gorgeous 40-acre property in Walmer, with wide open spaces, historic gum trees and large dams for the five therapy horses to frolic in.

Owner Elizabeth Hannah, who has worked in Chinese medicine and acupuncture for more than 30 years, found inspiration to venture into horse therapy after adopting a nine-month-old friesian/ persian cross named Millie 10 years ago.

After seeing the benefits of working with horses, Elizabeth trained in natural horsemanship and pursued studies in counselling, psychotherapy and narrative therapy, opening Black Horse Therapies near Kyneton four years ago.

"I work with people of all ages. The youngest was a three-yearold who had experienced physical trauma and the oldest was a woman in her 80s who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

She took a lot of comfort in Sammy – the Clydesdale cross," Elizabeth said.

Working with people who are experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological issues, Elizabeth uses storytelling to highlight a person’s achievements and to build a new narrative for their identity.

"For example, a kid who is considered the 'troubled kid' at school who discovers that they are calm and patient with the horses, helps them to have a different understanding of who they are and to build their confidence," Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth is registered with NDIS and often works with people who have a diagnosis of autism or ADHD and finds the sessions increase their confidence and can help with self regulation and focus.

"The horses give us immediate feedback and having the ability to read the horses' signals like dropping their head and blinking, meaning they are feeling safe, helps teach," she said.

"Horses are prey animals. They have a history of being hunted, both in the wild and domestically, and part of their genetic makeup makes them very sensitive to body language of potential predators, which means they have a strong sensitivity to our moods.

"I've been working with one teenage boy for a few years now.

He has a history of being very violent and has a list of diagnosis as long as your arm. His violent behaviours have been enormously reduced in that time.

"This approach has really suited him as he wasn't able to sit and talk and now his awareness of his internal state has grown.

Kyneton’s quiet achievers The RM Begg Auxiliary consists of 20 dedicated members, each drawn together with a common purpose: to raise funds and provide support for the home’s residents.

In the heart of the Kyneton community, a remarkable group of individuals has been quietly making a huge difference to the lives of residents at RM Begg Aged Care.

Led by its president Rosemary Bain, the RM Begg Auxiliary consists of 20 dedicated members, each drawn together with a common purpose: to raise funds and provide support for the home’s residents.

For many years, the group’s fundraising efforts have helped enhance the home’s shared and personal living spaces, as well as assisted the support provided to residents through the provision of much-needed equipment and care items. Put simply, their altruism has ensured RM Beggs residents can enjoy the twilight of their lives in a place of comfort, care and respect.

Rosemary said the auxiliary was proud to have raised about $34,000 last financial year.

"We have our monthly craft market at Bolton Hall on the first Saturday of the month and sell all our craft, cakes, jams and books," she said.

"We have a garage sale two or three times a year, we've just had a stall at the Kyneton Show and we've just started our big Christmas raffle, which is supported amazingly by the townspeople.

"We really all do enjoy raising funds and being able to put back in to the nursing home – it's so well regarded in the community.

"And we still decide what the money we raise goes towards, we're provided a wishlist from the nursing home, and it's put to our meeting and we decide what we use it for.

"We're really just there to enhance the comfort and lifestyle of the residents."

RM Begg has now merged with Respect, a 100-yearold organisation dedicated to serving older people across Australia.

Deb Cutts, Respect’s head of philanthropy, met recently with the RM Begg Auxiliary at Bolton Hall to discuss how Respect could support their generous, ongoing work.

“At Respect, so many of our homes have a proud

history of philanthropy, and we owe such a tremendous amount of gratitude to the generosity of all our supporters and patrons who continue to support our vital work,” Ms Cutts said.

“The auxiliary at RM Begg has been so pivotal in ensuring residents are able to enjoy a great quality of life at our home, and Respect is looking forward to supporting their ongoing fundraising efforts so they can continue to make such a big difference to the Kyneton community.”

RM Begg Auxiliary is a shining example of the power of community connection and collective altruism. Their commitment to making RM Begg an even better place for residents is stronger than ever, and they look forward to continuing to collaborate with Respect to turn their shared vision into reality.

The Kyneton and Districts Toy Library has relocated to the former Visitor Information Centre at 127 High Street and reopened this month.

The toy library was in need of an alternative location following the decision to hand back its former home – the leased site of the former Lady Brooks Kindergarten on Hutton Street – to the Victorian Government.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council supported the transition with $3000 through its Small Project Grants program.

Mayor Annette Death said council’s Children, Youth and Family Services team had been working with the toy library committee to investigate alternative accommodation options and ensure a smooth transition to a new site.

“We’re really pleased for the toy library to have a new dedicated space, which we hope will make it easier for their volunteers to run sessions and manage toys,” she said.

The toy library’s move follows the other remaining tenant of the former Lady Brooks Kindergarten – council’s Maternal Child and Health Service – moving to Kyneton Health's Ambulatory Care Centre in February this year.

The toy library is now located at 127 High Street in Kyneton and is open from 10am to 11am on Saturdays.

Giving Tuesday supports Edgars Mission

Little lamb Kansas is calling on kind humans to join her today for Giving Tuesday, to raise funds for the organisation that has delivered her care.

Not-for-profit animal sanctuary Edgar’s Mission rescued the resilient lamb after she was found covered in mud, with her tail partially chewed off and unable to move.

“Although she was critically ill, we held firm in the belief that one day she would walk again,” said sanctuary founder Pam Ahern.

“Although there were many signs that Kansas may not make it, she refused to give in and so did we.

"With the aid of a little wheelchair, Kansas grew stronger each day, and eventually her first wobbly steps turned into a joyous run.”

In the past year, Edgar’s Mission has reached 455 million people on social media by sharing the stories of every individual they save.

This Giving Tuesday, November 28, Edgar’s Mission is calling on kind hearts to help more animals just like Kansas have a life truly worth living.

“We have set an ambitious target to raise $221,000 to cover our annual food and bedding costs for our 400 rescued residents, plus the hundreds more who will pass through our sanctuary gates and find forever homes,” Pam said.

Giving Tuesday was launched in 2012 as a simple idea: to create a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past 11 years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires many people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

Grants to support suicide prevention

Suicide can have lasting impacts across communities. It is complex and multifaceted, with no 'one size fits all' solution.

Grants of up $10,000, $50,000 and $150,000 are now open to community groups, organisations and service providers, through Murray PHN to deliver projects aimed at reducing the impact and incidence of suicide.

With two multi-year suicide prevention placed-based trials in Mildura and Benalla now complete, Murray PHN is working to embed the Black Dog Institute’s community-led Lifespan framework across the region.

For grant applications to be successful, they must meet elements of the framework, which combines nine strategies with a strong evidence-base and an integrated approach for suicide prevention.

Another important element for applicants to consider is the inclusion of people with lived experience.

Within this grant program, Murray PHN also has funds available for groups or organisations to receive support and training from Australia’s national lived experience of suicide organisation, Roses in The Ocean.

After six years in the making, Trentham has a new community garden.

Known as the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre Community Garden, it was designed to be used by a number of groups as well as individuals wanting to enjoy their surroundings. For example, classes of Trentham Neighbourhood Centre in areas like gardening and art, scrabble, craft and youth groups will take to the gardens at times for their activities.

The design and construction of the garden was partially funded by the Hepburn Shire, which donated $8000 to the project, the federal government, which donated $30,000, and The Little Gallery of Trentham, which donated $5200.

There were also donations and assistance from other organisations and individuals in the town. The garden was partially designed, and then built, by Anthony Morrey.

Remembering those we love at Christmas As we approach the Christmas season, filled with joy and gatherings with family and friends, it’s important to recognise that for some of us, emotions may be a mix of celebration and longing. This is to communicate a few facts about the grapegrowing climate of the Macedon Ranges in response to Ray Peck’s letter (‘Cool climate for how long?’, Opinions, November 14).

We have collected data from a 10-year in-vineyard temperature study across 35 vineyard blocks across the Macedon Ranges that was performed independently

by GrapeLinks.

The Macedon Ranges vineyards are at about 37.2 South. The old adage that cool-climate grapes must grow south of 37.5 latitude is not valid, as some vineyards further south, e.g. in Tasmania, are warmer at night, in particular those that are close to the warming Bass Strait. The nights are much cooler in the vineyards of the Macedon Ranges, as they are further inland and at an altitude of 440 – 780 m.

Besides altitude >400m and latitude, there are many ways of defining cool climates and mean January temperature (MJT) may be the worst measure, as in true cool climates grape ripening has not even started in January. MJT fluctuates with El Niño and La Niña events and has been below the cool climate target of 19.5 C for five in the past 10 years in the Macedon Ranges.

The temperature measurements confirmed that the vineyards can all be called cool-climate sites by their cool nights, which preserve acids in the grapes and by the absence of heatloads during ripening, which prevents the loss of cool-climate aromas.

Singling out a few high-lying vineyards as truly cool climate is misleading as all vineyards had a high Cold Night Index, which was calculated from the degree hours below 15 C. The dataloggers in the vineyards also captured daily minima and maxima, from which the Growing Season Temperature (GST) could be calculated. In the past 10 years, GSTs in the Macedon Ranges (except in the El Niño year of 2015/16), stayed between 16 and 17.2 C; in the past four years they were at or below 16 C. In the Rheingau and Bourgogne, GSTs were close to 17 C until 2017, then they rose above 18 C due to the stronger effect of global warming in the Northern Hemisphere.

The prospect for the Macedon Ranges remaining a cool climate region is most encouraging as the position in the Southern Hemisphere, at high latitude and altitude and at a distance from the ocean, will ensure cold nights and cool days for years to came.

One of Victoria’s longest running and best Belinda Ryan Baynton The Kyneton Show is indeed one of the best shows in Victoria with so much to offer all ages.

The pavilion exhibits, displays, animal nursery, children’s activities, arena events, fireworks, sideshows and so much more.

The huge number of people this annual event attracts to Kyneton is testimony to the endless work the show committee undertakes in the months and weeks in the lead up to the show.

Josie Rutledge has an amazing energy and enthusiasm in her role as show secretary and works tirelessly to ensure each show is better than the previous one.

While the show is well supported with huge crowds and over 2500 entries, a team of volunteers is needed to help with the huge list of tasks. Working as a volunteer is certainly a way of giving back to the community and being part of a large team of people who are committed to making the show one of the best, is indeed rewarding.

Many I spoke to on Saturday while working as a volunteer, spoke enthusiastically and positively about the show as a significant event on the Kyneton calendar.

An event of this scale is well supported by community organisations but to ensure the show can continue at this level it needs people to volunteer to take on tasks in preparation, on show day and in the cleanup.

A big call out is given to people of all ages to take on a volunteer role to ensure that the show can continue to be one of the best. Take action and register your interest at kynetonshow@gmail.com

An open letter to Mount Alexander Shire councillors and CEO Ian Slattery, Maldon The state government has just released its DRAFT Kangaroo Harvest Management Plan 2024-2028 for comment. Comments have to be submitted by Monday December 4, 2023. Here is the link: www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/ wildlife-trade/comment/vic-kangarooharvest-management-plan-2024-28#daffpage-main Note that Mount Alexander is to be in the Loddon Mallee shooting zone.

There are two important and very concerning points to note: 1. The draft plan does not exclude Mount Alexander Shire despite council’s letter of July 28, 2023, calling on the government to remove the shire from the plan, and; 2. The draft plan proposes that kangaroos can be killed on public land. This means that shooters will now be slaughtering kangaroos in Mount Alexander Shire’s parks and reserves – the one last remaining safe haven for these animals. This will further increase the cruelty and risks to residents’ and visitors’ safety and peaceful amenity.

This change is a clear indication that this industry has wiped out so many kangaroos across the state that they have to resort to targeting these animals in areas that should be a place of safety for all protected Australian wildlife. When mass killing of wildlife occurs in state and national parks in Victoria, the gates are locked and the activity occurs during the night and out of the gaze of the general public.

Once approved, the KHMP will be in place for the next five years and there will be no further opportunity for input. So it is vital council responds to the invitation to

comment on this draft before December 4, 2023.

I urge council to submit to the draft plan and call on the government to have Mount Alexander Shire excluded and that under no circumstances are public lands within the shire to be included in the plan.

Didn't fit the criteria Tom O’Dea, New Gisborne Continuing from my letter to your paper recently in regards to Macedon Ranges Shire Council cancelling Australia Day celebrations on January 26.

I wanted to further emphasise my argument by conducting a survey, asking the residents of the Macedon Ranges what their reaction to this decision may be.

These surveys took place in various locations throughout the Macedon Ranges, outside supermarkets and local businesses.

My intentions were to ask the people for their honest opinions and at no point did I disclose my own personal beliefs, so as to not affect the authenticity of the survey results.

The results of the survey were of no surprise to me! 300+ signatures and addresses from concerned and disgusted residents, versus just six that actually agreed with the shire’s decision.

I presented this survey to Cr Geoff Neil, he was one of the councillors who opposed the original motion to cancel Australia Day events on January 26 within the shire.

I was informed that this survey was to be discussed at the next MRSC meeting in November.

A pleasant spokeswoman from council contacted myself shortly after the meeting at MRSC. I was informed that my survey didn’t fit the 'criteria of the MRSC' and therefore was deemed unfit to proceed with any discussions or diligence.

I respectfully suggested that Macedon Ranges Shire Council should have conducted their own un-biased survey … fitting their 'criteria', before they voted to cancel Australia Day celebrations within the shire! If a survey isn’t fitting, what 'criteria' was adhered to when this vote was put into motion?

We are the ratepayers and we have no apparent say in what is happening!

All this social engineering and woke socialist ideology is taking hold in all areas of society. It needs to be called out by all of us in the silent majority.

The principle of civic equality Dr Paul White, Kyneton I first wish to acknowledge and thank Lynsey, Julie, John, Lindsay and Stephen (and I see our editor’s note, too) for all their considered responses to my letter ('A respectful No', Opinions, October 17) regarding the Voice referendum that this great Australian nation overwhelmingly decided to reject.

To suggest that was the reason for the outcome is particularly unkind and unfair to the 61% of Australians who voted NO. Clinging to 'misinformation' means that 61% of Australians are dismissed as incapable of intelligent thought and making decisions for ourselves.

To understand the strong NO result is not difficult: there were zero details, plus all these elites shouted down to us ordinary Australian folks that only educated people understood the Voice — that anyone of us considering to vote NO were only racists, morons and dinosaurs! Now that sealed it for many of us.

My piece was all about the guiding principle of civic equality in the Constitution, a rejection of separatism between Australians.

Of course, any disadvantaged Indigenous Australians should be helped — as should any Australian — but based simply and entirely on genuine need, not colour, origin or race.

Thrilling energy on stage The show will also include a high-energy, drum-and-bass fire juggling act

by Luke Taylor, former member of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus who first began juggling and practising acrobatics as a 12-year-old and by his early 20s was performing on Broadway. Luke is a graduate of the National Institute of Circus Arts, a former member of Circus Oz, and has recently moved to Harcourt.

“Live performance is all about sharing an experience with an audience,” he says. “It’s completely different from watching something on a screen. It’s a shared experience – and it’s what we need right now – to unite people.”

Castlemaine Circus general manager Kirsty Sutherland says the circus show is an invitation to the wider community to be a part of what they create.

"There’s a thrilling energy generated between the performers and the audience during a show. The audience can be on the edge of their seats, feeling totally connected to the performers or with a giant grin plastered on their faces, having an absolute ball.”

When performers from Castlemaine Circus’s eightstrong Youth Circus Troupe are being tossed through the air in their 'Toss the Girl' act, their skill and talent might trick you into thinking performing such acts is a breeze. But according to Malia Walsh, who will MC the annual Castlemaine Circus Show on Sunday December 10, the fun those performers are having on stage is hard-earned.

“It takes a long time to have genuine fun on stage,” says Malia, who would know – she’s been training and performing circus acts in Australia and internationally for 15 years.

“Once you’re able to do a trick 100 times in a row, and you’re at that level of comfort on stage, that’s when performing gets really fun.”

The annual Castlemaine Circus Show will be housed in the Castlemaine Circus’ new permanent home at the Old High School Gymnasium, Etty Street, Castlemaine.

The show will include amazing performances by professional artists such as Naomi Wilde on dance trapeze and a Melbourne-based duo performing their gravity-defying Acrobalance act.

Students of the school’s Emerging Artist program, Sam Campbell (a Wild Card winner in the national Bend The Air aerial competition) and Ez Hall will also perform.

Malia, who made Woodend her home in 2017, considers the chance for aspiring performers like Sam and Ez to perform live at events like the upcoming show as a unique opportunity.

“The audience feels the urgency, the excitement and the tension in the performers’ bodies – and the fear as they begin a particularly tricky move. Then they feel the confidence and excitement on stage when everything goes well,” she says.

Creative talent on show

There were more than 3000 entries in the pavilion competitions at the 161st Kyneton Show.

The Watts pavilion was a kaleidoscope of colourful creativity and fragrant blooms with another pavilion dedicated to the booming LEGO competition.

“It’s the only pavilion dedicated to LEGO at a country show in Victoria, possibly in Australia,” steward Nicole Laity said.

A record 300-plus stories were also on display in the creative writing competition.

The traditional agricultural show classes remain crowd favourites, from champion rose to the best baking, home grown vegetables and the best eggs, needlework and knitting.

More contemporary additions include the traditional art of home brew across a range of classes and the new category of wargaming miniatures which is tipped to grow next year as word spreads. Photography is the most hotly contested section with more than 650 entries from experimental and drone photography to photos of the family pet.

It’s a showcase of talent from right around the district and beyond with some

entrants coming from interstate to join the highly regarded Kyneton Show competition. Winners of the VAS classes in each section go through to the group final for our region with the chance to win through to the state final at the Royal Melbourne Show. The aggregate prize goes to the competitor who has won the most points across the various classes in their section.

While winning is a triumph, the fun is in sharing the joy and being part of a country show tradition. Each entry makes the competition, creating a stunning display of incredible talent that saw thousands admiring the wide range of exhibits and animals across the two-day show.

The horse competition returned for the first time since COVID after being cancelled because of wet conditions last year. The stud sheep section attracted more entrants in the junior handler competition while champion sheep and alpaca fleeces fascinated all ages.

The poultry pavilion was also popular, introducing crowds to a wide range of varieties of chickens, roosters, quail and ducks.These are the main prize winners for each section.

The eight-part, 30-minute podcast/ radio series will feature on Castlemaine radio station MainFM, with the overarching aim of commemorating and celebrating women in central Victoria.

Project coordinator Lisa D’Onofrio said each episode would consist of short interviews with a wide range of diverse women about local women who have made an impact on them, and longer interviews with local women writers, researchers, students, historians and curators who will discuss historical women who have strong connections to the region.

"The series will be launched as a celebration and promotion of International Women's Day 2024, and the broadcast will start during International Women's Month, thus elevating women's voices and experiences and featuring their stories," Ms D'Onofrio said.

This project builds on the research and development Ms D'Onofrio has previously undertaken around the topic during 2020/2021.

This prior exploration was supported

by a Mount Alexander Shire’s 'Get Lost' small grant, and showed that there was extensive interest and endorsement for honouring and highlighting women and their achievements both 'extraordinary' and 'ordinary'. The radio series/podcast is being produced with the support of the Community Broadcasting Foundation – cbf.org.au.

Ms D’Onofrio said a quote by historian Bettany Hughs spurred her on to make the series – “It’s the inconvenient truth that women have always been 50% of the population, but only occupy around 0.5% of recorded history”.

Ms D’Onofrio said we had a huge number of interesting, diverse and wonderful women – doing a range of incredible things – in Mount Alexander Shire.

“This is a mere drop in the bucket of what’s out there, and hopefully will serve as a starting point for listeners to explore further into our vibrant local history,” she said.

“It also gives local women the opportunity to remember women who have made an impression on them.”

Once Upon a Christmas Eve is a fairytale for grown-ups packed with carols, laughs, fun and frivolity.

This will be the debut show of Macedon Ranges based group Safe Space Performances and will be showing at Kyneton's Bluestone Theatre for one night only.

Join an unlikely group of travellers as they are thrust together by fate on the morning of Christmas Eve. Evacuated from their ship, far from their destination and stranded in the Mediterranean costal village of Portofino, the story begins as they arrive at Sophia’s Cabaret Restaurant – the last place they thought they would be spending Christmas.

Once Upon a Christmas Eve has been collaborative project between Safe Space Performances founder Gabriel Macura and SSP members.

"I’ve wanted to create a Christmas show

like this for a few years," Gabriel said.

"I wrote a storyline and each performer has created their own character based on being a group of evacuated passengers from a cruise style ship which has broken down the morning of Christmas Eve. "The show combines solo cabaret style Christmas carols with some group singing all packaged in a story with fabulous characters! It has developed organically into a hilarious and touching show which you will not want to miss out on.

"We are so excited to be presenting it at the gorgeous Bluestone Theatre.

Everyone involved has stepped up so tremendously – the show is an absolute riot!

We roll with laughter at every rehearsal!"

Barkly Square sports new look

Kyneton’s Barkly Square will soon welcome back local user groups following a comprehensive upgrade of its playing surface.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Macedon Ranges Shire mayor Annette Death were among those to inspect the ground on Friday and mark the $1.26 million project’s completion, which comprised close to $756,000 from council and $500,000 from the Victorian Government’s World Game Facilities Fund.

Currently home to the Kyneton District Soccer Club, Kyneton Obedience Dog Club and Kyneton Smallbore Rifle Club, the ground’s drainage issues had previously made it prone to waterlogging, resulting in events – such as soccer matches – often needing to be cancelled or relocated.

Identified as a key project in council’s Barkly Square Master Plan, the completed sports field reconstruction aims to provide a fit-for-purpose, water-resilient playing surface that results in better reliability and greater opportunities for participation. On the project, Cr Death said it was pleasing for council to have been able to deliver these much-needed Barkly Square upgrades, which will allow user groups to expand their offerings and future-proof their existence.

“I’d like to thank the Victorian Government for their vital contribution to making this project a reality, and I’d also like to thank the user groups for their patience and collaboration during the works – particularly Kyneton District Soccer Club, which advocated for these upgrades for several years,” she said.

Works undertaken throughout this year included removing the existing turf wicket table, installing new irrigation and drainage systems, and overhauling the existing playing surface by stripping, regrading, cultivating, and resurfacing it. New sporting infrastructure, including a synthetic cricket pitch and soccer goals, was also installed. The ground is anticipated to be ready for use in February 2024 once the turf has established.

As a primary user of the ground, Kyneton District Soccer Club president Ron Cole said the big benefit for the club was that they were going to be able to train and play throughout the year without having to worry about moving – making it more enjoyable and beneficial for everyone involved.

“We’d like to thank council, the Victorian Government, all our sponsors and everyone else who continues to support us.

We’ve managed to continue to grow our numbers and we’re excited for what the future holds,” Mr Cole said.

Mr Cole presented Ms Thomas with her own Rangers Jersey to mark the occasion.

Ms Thomas said she couldn’t be more proud to have her very own Rangers jersey.

“This club prides itself on inclusion,” she said.

“They were Football Victoria’s Regional Club of the Year in 2021.

“And only last week they won MinRoos Centre of the Year, and president Ron Cole was named Victoria’s Male Volunteer of the Year for 2023.

“Talk about kicking goals – go Rangers!”

The Barkly Square Master Plan also proposes to build a new pavilion to replace the current ageing changeroom facilities. Council is continuing planning and design work on this aspect.

Tiger women ready for finals

The Kyneton Country Basketball Women have gone from strength to strength this season competing against teams in the north west division under the guide of Ash Clark.

The Kyneton Tiger women have played many teams with a competitive enthusiasm and great spirit.

The Tigers are ready to take on Mildura in the semi finals in Kyneton this coming Saturday December 2 at 7pm at the Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre. Head down and support the Kyneton Tigers Women in their quest to becoming grand finalists for this coming 2023 season.

GOLF results CASTLEMAINE Saturday’s showdown saw more than 40 players vie for supremacy in the penultimate round of the 4BBB competition.

Each harboured aspirations of ascending the ranks in the overall standings.

The duo of Nic Simpson and Mick Kehoe emerged triumphant with an impressive 47 points.

Hot on their heels were Rod Entwisle – Glenn Lorenz with a commendable 45 points, then Matthew O’Brien – Frank Byrne on 44.

NTPs went to Michael Bottomley and Garry Moore.

GISBORNE Some big bucks were up for grabs on Saturday when 159 players competed to win $1000 buck-a-roos, kindly donated by John Burns.

Ben Ferrari – who can now buy a Ferrari – Craig Rowsell, Peter Watson and Guy Cilauro took home the cash with a score of 112 stableford points, with best three cards counting.

Last Wednesday 33 ladies competed in a stableford event, with the overall and B-grade winner being Moon Gordon with a great 38 points.

Adrienne Fievez topped A-grade with 35 points, and Jenny Malberg won C-grade with 34.

KYNETON The final of the Meryl Serpell singles knockout was a thriller on Friday.

After 18 holes, Kylie Munro and Michelle Werner were all square, with the former clinching victory on the 19th hole. Congratulations girls!

The Benmat Engineering sponsored stableford on Saturday had two divisions.

Terry Gamble (8) took out division one with 39 points from Adam Smith (12) with 37; Richard Partridge (17) topped division two with 38 from David McKelvie (17) on 37.

The ladies winner was in-form Kylie Munro (17) with 38.

NTPs went to Jason McClure and Ross Foreman (both 2), Partridge and Munro.

Wednesday stableford: Col O'Sullivan (21) continued on his winning way with 40 points from Peter Cameron (16).

(41) led in the ladies with 44 points, one ahead of the unlucky Michelle Werner (21).

LANCEFIELD After the course was closed for a couple of weeks for coring and general maintenance, everyone was pleased to get back into the swing of things.

Saturday Ambrose results were very close, with the winners being Gavin Winwood (13), Barry Flentjar, Denis Davenport (6) and John Wilson (25) coming in with 59 points.

Runners-up were Steve Gilbert (25), Bruce Hay (25), Kevin McBride (21) on 60.167 points, and third place went to David Morgan (20), James Whitford (13) and Stephen Morgan (34) 60.833.

While the course was out of action, the LGC ladies held their annual trip away to Rich River for the social side of the club, with some golf thrown in. Plenty of frivolity for all.

After being absent from the course for three weeks, the ladies look forward to excellent conditions for the second round of their championships.

Legends stableford: Ed Godek (17) had a day where everything went right and his 46 points was eight better than Stewart Stevens (27) with Graham Mau (17) third on 37.

Saturday stableford: Stephen Draper (22) 40 points, from Gary Dudderidge (12) on 39, ahead of John Wilson (26) on a countback.

MOUNT MACEDON The annual 'Doing it for Jarrod' fundraiser took place on Sunday.

It's the fourth year the club has held this much-anticipated event, with all money raised going to Challenge to support cancer sufferers.

With full fields for both morning and afternoon, the club is grateful to members, sponsors and visitors who continue to dig deeply into their pockets to support Jarrod Lyle's legacy.

Morning winners were Saurabh Singh, Mike Smitheram, Kevin Taylor and Andrew Kincaid, whilst the afternoon field winners were Patrick and Darcy Doyle, Josh Hickmott and Luke Zerella.

A third of the field achieved handicap or better in the midweek stableford.

Richard Payne (8) was the winner with 38 points, on a

countback from Mike Hoiles (15). Tony Littman and Mike Gorman claimed the NTPs. ROMSEY Overnight rain made the greens very receptive for wellplayed approach shots in Saturday’s monthly medal, but a strong northerly meant good scores were scarce.

Only two players were able to match their handicaps or better, with Scott Williams having a mixed front nine before coming home with a wet sail to card 87-17-70.

Runner-up Simon Donovan had 82-10-72, and Ben Owen was third with 103-20-83.

Least putts – Williams with 26.

Last Wednesday’s stableford in ideal conditions saw Jenny Hartley (24) card 38 points to win from Lorraine Robb (48) on a countback, with Wendy Gosden (32) third on 35.

Lorraine Cole continued her good recent form with a fine nett 67 to earn the C-grade prize at Yea’s Isabel Bett Memorial Trophy event on Thursday. Mim Page (Marysville) landed the major trophy with a nett 64.

TRENTHAM The first round of the Summer Cup on Saturday produced plenty of good scores.

A-grade winner Martin Walker had 76-9-67 to finish a shot clear of Kent Newton.

Trevor McKern’s good form continued in B-grade with 85-17-68, and Ross Green topped C-grade with 96-25-71.

The women’s 4BBB stableford went to Alison Bourchers – Alex Everaud with 46 points.

WOODEND Congratulations to Eric ‘The Viking’ Vosbergen on winning Woodend’s midweek championship. From a handicap of 12, he had 79 and 80 off the stick.

Saturday’s stableford saw some very good scores, with Matt Kivimets (13) having 41 stableford points – he’s headed for A-grade with a handicap reduction.

Georgie Taylor (10) topped A-grade with 40 points, one clear of Andrew Davies (2).

Woodend has just introduced a great incentive for more women to participate.

Trentham’s Barry Mahar and Norm Cooke had plenty to talk about at Gisborne on Saturday.

The long-term rivalry between Kyneton and Kyneton Golf bowling clubs continued on Saturday, with Kyneton taking the honours in their division one pennant match.

Significantly, the 18-shot victory occurred on the Golf green, which has not always been a happy hunting ground for Kyneton.

The season had reached the halfway mark, and 2022-23 grand finalists Golf and Lancefield are not in the top four.

Current ladder: Romsey 91, Kyneton 85, Gisborne 74, Kilmore 72, Kyneton Golf 67, Broadford 45, Lancefield 35, Trentham 24, Diggers Rest 19.

Kyneton missed the finals last season, but have to be now taken seriously as a contender after dispensing with Golf.

Mark Smoljo’s rink downed Adrian Plowman by 19 shots to pave the way for the Kyneton victory, with the other two contests extremely close.

The other three matches saw the favourites take the points.

Gisborne moved to third place but had to work hard to account for a resilient Trentham by eight shots on the synthetic.

Andrew Brockmuller prevented a clean sweep for the home side.

Ladder-leader Romsey won by 28 shots at Diggers Rest, with Aaron Young’s crew home by 25 shots and surprisingly, ace recruit Graham Edwards went down by three to Shane Crimmins.

Romsey can be well pleased with top position and an iron grip on the double chance.

Lancefield could not prevent Broadford taking maximum points and none of the sides seeking a finals berth look forward to playing on a green they find hard to master.

This Saturday’s ninth round matches are: Kilmore v Gisborne, Lancefield v Kyneton Golf, Romsey v Broadford, Trentham v Diggers Rest.

OLD GREEN GOES Last week the old turf green in front of Gisborne’s clubhouse was torn up in preparation for installation of a new synthetic surface.

The Gisborne club has made a big investment in moving to two synthetic surfaces.

Long-term bowlers will have plenty of memories from battles on the turf at this venue.

Croquet champs decided

The final round of the pennant season of the Northern District Croquet Association was held last week with Divisions 2 and three now decided.

In Division 2, Kyneton Green were forced to forfeit their final game allowing Quarry Hill Kookaburras to temporarily go top of the table. Any hopes they may have had about taking out the title were quickly crushed when Quarry Hill Galahs had an emphatic five games to one win over Kyneton Black to be crowned Division 2 champions.

The real competition was in Division 3; Kyneton Yellow had been dominant in the home and away matches before being upset by Macedon Ranges Mount Charlie in the first semi-final.

A win in the preliminary final gave Kyneton a second chance as they took on Mount Charlie for the third time in four weeks in the grand final played on neutral lawns at Quarry Hill. Team captain Judy Aldred got Kyneton off to a good start with a 7-1 win over Mount Charlie’s Noeline Richardson.

Margaret Parker doubled the lead for Kyneton with a solid 7-4 win over Lyn Robertson. In the reverse singles Parker kept the pressure on, beating Richardson 7-3, however Robertson then gave Mount Charlie hope of a comeback with a good 7-4 win over Aldred.

Mount Charlie were still hoping strong performances in the doubles may have given them an unlikely victory but the Kyneton pair powered on winning 7-1 and 7-5. This is a repeat performance for Aldred having won the title last year with Pat Fahy as a partner.

In division two on Saturday, Kyneton Golf accounted for Kyneton by 14 shots, and Woodend scored an all shots up 27 shots victory against Broadford.

Kilmore moved into top spot by defeating Macedon by five shots, and Romsey at home succumbed to Diggers Rest.

Lancefield remain undefeated after securing maximum points at home to Woodend in division three, and Trentham played well to win by eight shots against Gisborne (4).

Woodend-Hesket Football Club will hold its annual general meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.

The venue is the social rooms at Gilbert Gordon Oval at 7pm.

The club is keen to see some new faces involved at committee level for 2024. The Hawks won their first A-grade netball premiership in the Riddell League last season, and the senior footballers reached the grand finai against Diggers Rest.

Last week the Hawks announced that Scott Caton would be coaching the senior women’s team in 2024. Caton has previous coaching experience, and has played football with the Reserves side for several seasons.The Hawks expressed thanks to Colin Bromley for coaching the women’s side last season, when Kyneton went through the season undefeated.

Soft patches on section of the track led to stewards and jockeys having discussions, with an eventual decision made not to continue the meeting.

Last year’s Kilmore Cup befell a similar fate with soft patches leading to the meeting being abandoned.

Rain impacts two-day fixture

The Castlemaine United A Grade bowlers gave their all against Muckleford but they had notched up 213 at stumps.

Rain affected play in a number of matches across the Castlemaine District Cricket Association last weekend.

A Grade and A Reserve sides were scheduled to play a two-day encounter and will aim to compete their clashes this weekend. B Grade played one-day matches and C Grade (Under 16) also played a oneday fixture where weather allowed. The Women’s Division is scheduled to return to play round four matches this Friday evening.

Highlights of the round were Barkers Creek A Grade batsman Bailey Henderson’s 105 not out against Maiden Gully Lions and Harcourt B Grade player Christopher Cassidy’s 87 not out against Guildford. Best with the ball were Guildford B Grader Levi Bruce with 5-42 and Castlemaine United Blue C Grade bowler Thomas Gordon with 4-2. Results were: A Grade Muckleford 9-213 (Declan Slingo 63, Edward Gingell 44, Brett Cole 32, Daniel Peckham 20; David George 3-33, Alister Brasher 2-12, Gabriel O’Sullivan 2-31, James Chaffey 2-56) made a solid start against Castlemaine United at the Camp Reserve.

Maiden Gully Lions won the toss and sent Barkers Creek 6-d/271 (Bailey Henderson 105 not out, Darby Semmens 41, Sean Smith 20 not out, Mark Noonan 19; Mitchell Hancock 2-19, Leo James 2-44) in to bat at Marist College/ Solar1 Electrical Oval. Maiden Gully Lions made a shaky start to their first innings and were at 2-7 at stumps on day one.

Gisborne in box seat Bill West

The eagerly awaited cricket battle between unbeaten McIntyre Cup sides Gisborne and Romsey is heavily weighted in favour of the Dragons after last Saturday's play at Gardiner Reserve.

The Redbacks were dismissed for 190 from 61.1 overs, and Gisborne will resume at 1/58 this Saturday with the previous round's century makers Riley Vernon and Will Mackay at the crease.

Both teams spent plenty of time in the prematch warm-ups, and Romsey skipper Ben Way won the toss and elected to bat.

Gisborne's multi-pronged attack kept the pressure on, and batters who looked likely failed to build the partnerships their side needed.

Way top scored with 59, and Chris Burkett contributed 30, with Leigh Brennan taking three wickets for the Dragons.

Failure to bat 80 overs was not what Romsey wanted, and Warren Kelly 29 and Vernon 26 not out added valuable runs before Kelly was bowled by Jamie Taylor shortly before stumps.

It will need a minor miracle for the Redbacks to pull this one out of the fire.

WOODEND FIGHT BACK Young opener Harry Lawson rescued Woodend from a shaky position, then the side's bowlers captured five Sunbury United wickets before stumps to leave this crucial game in the balance.

Woodend's batting failure can be highlighted by Lawson watching five partners depart for scores of 3, 0, 3, 6, and 4 with paceman Fabian Fernando among the wickets.

After losing to Sunbury Kangaroos in a thriller, Woodend desperately need the six points from this encounter.

Hayden Ingleton took two wickets, and the other bowlers chipped in as United's top order capitulated.

In the other McIntyre Cup matches, bottom side Diggers Rest compiled 9/229 against Macedon, and 15 wickets fell in the Rupertswood versus Sunbury Kangaroos encounter.

Adam Fearnley's 5-13 from 15 overs for Kangaroos was one of the day's highlight performances with the ball.

United's Cody McDorman sent down 31 overs to take 6-28 against Woodend in McIntyre 2nds.

RICHARDSON 135 There were several centuries on Saturday, with Romsey's McIntyre 2nds captain Jed Richardson leading by example by compiling 135 (14 fours) in a prolonged innings against Gisborne. The Redbacks finished at 8/300.

In Johnstone Shield 2nds, Riddell opener Michael Day scored 104 with 18 boundaries but the Bombers were dismissed for 183 with Ruoertswood ending the day in a strong position.

Riddell's Nirmal Singh Brar scored 104 in Club North, and Manprett Randkawa made 100 for St Anthonys.

Heavy rain overnight was welcomed throughout much of the GDCA area.

Malmsbury's teams were successful, with the Jensen 1sts side scoring 4/216 (captain Matt Cox 82 not out) against United, and the Green lineup defeating Woodend. Malmsbury Gold received a forfeit from Lancefield.

Strong optimism for Tigers in 2024 Re-elected Kyneton Football Netball Club president Hayden Evans predicts the club will go from strength to strength next season.

There was plenty of enthusiasm at the Tigers’ annual meeting held at the town’s bowling club last week.

The key executive members were all re-elected, with Evans stating the club was only getting stronger and the community spirit was building with all its teams competing in the Riddell District Football Netball League next season.

The president emphasised clubs could not function without the generosity of a fantastic committee and an army of volunteers to call on.

He urged all involved to “share the excitement among the community” and continue to support what was a great club.

“We are only getting stronger and the community spirit is building.”

The president described 2023 as “a massive year for the club” with the

club working together as a team.

Apart from the major decision to move from the Bendigo to the Riddell League in 2024 and onwards, other achievements included: # Successful transition of senior women’s and juniors into the RDFNL. # Premiership wins for senior womens football and U17s netball. # Setting up a new junior sub-committee for 2024 and beyond. # New coach and player recruitment across all grades for 2024.

Evans paid tribute to club manager Nikki Young.

“Again this season Nikki has exceeded all expectations and her tenacity and drive has ensured new sponsors have been secured and the club is in a strong position leading into next season.”

He said the committee had faced challenging times and all the great people on the committee deserved thanks for their outstanding contribution and club leadership.
