Central Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested four teenagers following a series of alleged vehicle thefts and break-ins across Castlemaine and Bendigo earlier this month.

It is alleged the group stole eight unlocked vehicles between October 1 to October 11.

They also allegedly broke into at least 17 unlocked cars, stealing cash and property from inside the vehicles.

A 16-year-old Jackass Flat boy, a 15-year-old Long Gully boy, a 15-year-old California Gully and a 14-year-old Long Gully boy were all interviewed and cautioned.

Police are continuing to encourage residents to ensure their vehicles are locked without any valuables stored inside.

Financial advice

The state government is providing free financial counselling to thousands of Victorians who are experiencing financial hardship.

The government’s Financial Counselling Program supported almost 19,000 Victorians who needed it most in the 2022-23 financial year, including 3806 people affected by family violence.

A $15 million investment in the program in 202324 includes an additional $1.7 million for family violence financial counselling, bringing the total allocation for this area of specialised need to almost $3.5 million.

Financial counsellors can offer a range of support, from providing advice about rights and responsibilities to negotiating with a creditor or working out a realistic payment plan for debts.

The government has invested more than $39 million over three years to enable 12 community agencies across the state to deliver general and family violence financial counselling to Victorians.

Victorians can find their closest financial counselling provider by using the 'find a financial counsellor' map on ndh.org.au or calling 1800 007 007.

November and December dates are now confirmed with activations on November 4 and 18 focusing on activities for young people and their families and events on December 2 and 16 celebrating the theme ’Radio GaGa’ including radio workshops, choir singalongs and Christmasthemed crafternoon.

Calls for creative solutions Jade Jungwirth

Creative housing solutions were high on the agenda at last week's meeting of Mount Alexander Council with residents raising the issue at public question time.

Also on the agenda was a proposal for two 49-year peppercorn lease to provide affordable housing for over 50s in Maldon and Newstead.

Laurel Kanost wrote to the council regarding the Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy requesting that the council consider using CFA properties for container-style temporary accommodation as an affordable and accessible option.

"Every township should have temporary housing, which is central, well serviced, safe and available on foot," Ms Kanost wrote.

"By leading this strategy in a trial, Castlemaine could author a new chapter in homelessness and temporary accommodation, which would provide all of Australia a useful low-cost solution to temporary accommodations."

Council's director of corporate and community services, Lisa Knight, responded, stating that a homelessness mapping exercise had been undertaken this year, which acknowledged the shortage of both social and affordable and social housing and a

shortage of place-based services in the shire, including limitations in hours services were available.

Michael Annear, council's director of infrastructure and development, said the council had advocated to the state government and its agencies to make vacant land available for affordable housing across the shire, which was an ongoing process.

John Taylor and a group of fellow residents living in McKendry Street Castlemaine also recently wrote to council to request permission to subdivide their land.

The land is currently zoned as rural living, however the area is not used for rural activities, consisting of traditional residential housing and part of the Castlemaine township.

"There is a lot of readily available rural land in the municipality that is not included in the Housing Growth and Neighbourhood Character Strategy that will be overlooked," Mr Taylor said.

"Including these areas in the strategy would be an opportunity to make residential land available with minimal impact as the land already has access to services.

"A change to the planning scheme to make the area general residential and even low density would provide immediate and accessible land for housing," he said.

Mr Annear said rural living zones areas

would be considered in early 2024 when the council undertook a rural living assessment.

Also on the agenda was a request for community consultation around entering into peppercorn leases with Wintringham Housing Limited in order to build and operate affordable rental housing for people over the age of 50 in Maldon and Newstead.

Cr Stephen Gardner said it was an exciting initiative that would add to the housing strategy the council had been working on.

"It saddens me to see the cost of buying a house in Maldon creeping up to a million dollars and rent creeping up to $500 a week," Cr Gardner said.

"People are priced out of the market and have to move. This isn’t going to change or resolve that issue, but building some units means there’s possibly four couples over the age of 50 that can stay in community who wouldn’t have been able to afford it."

Cr Matthew Driscoll said he believed the strategy could be a positive future step, but at this stage the council was only seeking community consultation.

"We all know we have a major issue with housing. It’s not going to cost the council much to do this and get a few people into solid housing," Cr Driscoll said.

Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the motion.

Boosting fee-free TAFE

The federal government, in partnership with state and territory governments, will provide $414,000 million in funding to deliver an additional 300,000 fee-free TAFE places from January 2024. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell is encouraging those who may be interested to take advantage of this opportunity.

“If you are leaving school, looking for work, or wanting to upskill and change your career, you may be eligible with a range of study options on offer,” Mr Mitchell said.

“There are thousands of fee-free TAFE places available across Australia for in-demand industries so you can fast track your skills development and secure a well-paid job.”

What you can do to help...

– Slow down when driving at dusk and dawn and be aware of your local wildlife.

– Know your surroundings.

Kangaroos tend to cross roads in the same places, be aware of where these crossings are.

– Consider wildlife-friendly fencing. More information is available online via Macedon Ranges Shire Council and Wildlife Victoria websites.

– Remove barbed wire fencing if you don’t need it for stock control. Most wildlife including birds, bats, kangaroos, possums, sugar gliders all get caught in barbed wire.

– Don't have your dogs offlead in known wildlife areas.

Angela Crawford Volunteer wildlife rescuers in the Macedon Ranges have described their workload as unsustainable.

They say the callouts they respond to on a daily basis are a full-time commitment, leaving them unable to earn an income in paid employment.

There is also no government funding for their work.

Sue Anderson, Trevor Crawford and Debbie Gwyther-Jones are among the handful of volunteer rescuers registered with Wildlife Victoria who share the shire-wide workload between them, each averaging about 25 callouts a week.

"If you've got a shelter or you're a carer you

can apply for grants, but grant money doesn't go very far when you're doing the amount of rescues that we're doing," Sue said.

"Most callouts involve euthanasia to end suffering, which is probably 90 per cent of the cases we attend, and there is no funding."

Trevor said rescuers could spend up to $1000 a week in fuel and vehicle running costs responding to callouts from morning to night.

"You can only do it if you're in a position where you don't owe money and you're not working, but we're destroying our financial future at the same time," he said.

"We're going to get to a point where we've got no money, we're burnt out, and then it's all over."

Debbie said increasing urban develop-

ment had led to an increase in dog attacks on wildlife, kangaroos caught in fencing or being hit by cars.

"Developers, before they even start, should have a wildlife management plan, but they don't," she said.

"Where they're developing in Romsey there are mobs of roos, and they're putting more than 600 new houses in there."

The rescuers are calling for help from the public via a fuel voucher drive.

Anyone wanting to help them with their costs is urged to purchase a fuel voucher from your local service station and drop them in to the donation box at the Midland Express office at 3 Market Street Kyneton.

For injured wildlife, call Wildlife Victoria on 8400 7300.

– If you find an injured animal pin drop the location.

– Look for any other environmental markers that will help a rescuer locate the animal.

– If possible, stay in your vehicle, about 30m away to avoid scaring the animal off, until a rescuer arrives.

– Never try to feed wildlife, they need specialist care.

– Save the Wildlife Victoria number in your phone – 8400 7300.

International Uilleann Piping Day comes to Castlemaine with one of the most famous sets of uilleann pipes in the world.

On tour from Ireland, duo Colm Broderick on uilleann pipes and Francis Cunningham on concertina will be including Castlemaine in their schedule and performing an intimate acoustic concert on Saturday November 4.

Piper Colm Broderick has been given the honour of taking possession of a very special instrument of great historical significance in Irish traditional music. It is a set of uilleann pipes once owned by master piper Liam O’Flynn, which was also played for many years by esteemed Miltown Malbay musician Willie Clancy. Na Piobairi Uilleann (the head agency for the instrument, based in Ireland) has tasked Colm with playing and looking after this special instrument and carrying on its legacy. Colm has travelled with the instrument across Europe and the Americas giving recitals and workshops.

Award-winning concertina player Francis Cunningham is a multi All-Ireland concertina winner who has performed and taught at festivals across Ireland, Europe and America.

In 2019 he released his debut album featuring 40 original compositions titled, Úrnua.

As a duo, Colm and Francis are international ambassadors of Irish traditional music.

Colm from County Carlow and Francis from County Clare have played together regularly from a very young age at fleadhs, sessions, performances and more. Their music is rooted in the rich piping and concertina playing traditions of county Clare.

Joining the duo on stage will be local Irish-style multi-instrumentalists Allan Evans and Ruth Boylan. Allan has performed traditional flute and harp in Ireland, Canada and across Australia. Ruth Boylan hails from County Kildare and plays concertina, fiddle and harp.

It was important to include Castlemaine on the tour itinerary because it has become the ‘home’ of Celtic Piping Club. Each year since 2013, the club has held a three-day residential weekend in the Goldfields to explore and learn about pipes and pipe music.

Over the past few years, the club has held public performances at the Old Castlemaine Goal and the Maurocco Bar. This is Colm and Francis’ debut tour of Australia.

“Visiting Australia to play and share our passion for Irish music is a dream come true," Colm said.

"We know that there is a large and growing community of Irish music lovers in Australia and we are very keen to get to know some of you over the month we are here."

Shedshaker Brewing’s Keg for Good is back today and tomorrow, with Connecting Country being this month’s recipient.

Since 2010, Connecting Country has worked with 450 landholders to restore over 14,000 hectares of land to support wildlife, including revegetation, fencing of remnant vegetation and weed control.

Connecting Country director Lori Arthur said they had installed over 450 nestboxes across the region, which were providing critical habitat for threatened species, such as the brush-tailed phascogale, and iconic species such as the sugar glider.

“This work is only possible with funding from grants and philanthropic donations," Lori said.

Engineering marvel to feature Lisa Dennis

The highly anticipated Mount Alexander Vintage Engine Club Tractor Pull is set to make its return this Sunday.

The event will be held for the first time in four years following an extended recess due to the pandemic and the 2022 floods.

Tractor enthusiasts from across the state will converge on the club's Muckleford headquarters at the David Bennett Reserve alongside the Muckleford Railway Station for the 2023 competition.

The premier attraction at this year's tractor pull will be the club's newly restored twin-engine Chamberlain tractor – a hybrid of two different models that was built by local farmer Morrie Oxley back in the early 1980s.

As previously detailed in the Express, MAVEC members salvaged the tractor in two pieces back in November 2020 and have been working behind the scenes to painstakingly piece it back together and restore it to its former glory.

The unique tractor was built by Morrie from a 1952 60DA Chamberlain, of which only 190 were made, and a 1956 70DA, of which 1010 were made.

The hybrid tractor reportedly had quite a unique gait, which saw it dubbed 'The Lizard' by Raywood locals at the time.

The mammoth tractor allowed Morrie to deep rip the soil on his family farm and resulted in a higher yield increasing from three bags to 33 bags of oats per acre at the time.

The local club has held five intensive working bees to complete the restoration, which has been headed up by Lancefield farmer and Chamberlain enthusiast Robert Green.

"It has been a fantastic all-round team effort and Morrie is absolutely chuffed. The 88-year-old will be in attendance on Sunday to see the tractor officially started up and put through its paces," Stephen said.

Robert said it had been a pleasure to be part of the project.

"Morrie was a pioneer ahead of his time. He was incredibly smart and skilled to come up with the concept for the build," Rob said.

The tractor pull event will see veteran, vintage and classic tractors of all makes and models vie for 20 prizes kindly sponsored by R & R McClure in two pulling sledges – one competitive and one practice division.

"The event is operated under National Historical Machinery Association guidelines and we have competitors from as far away as Cobden and Geelong joining us. There will be full catering available and a number of displays and stalls," Stephen said.

The event will kick off at 10am and run until approximately 3pm.

Entry is just $5 for adults and with children under 16 free.

A countback to fill an extraordinary vacancy on Macedon Ranges Shire Council for South Ward will be held online at 10am on Monday November 13.

The vacancy is due to the resignation of Cr Anne Moore.

The Victorian Electoral Commission will hold a countback of all formal votes from the 2020 Macedon Ranges Shire Council, South Ward election to fill the vacancy.

Votes will be redistributed to candidates who were unsuccessful in 2020 but are still eligible to be elected.

The countback is based on the proportional representation method of counting, which means candidates must achieve a proportion of votes known as a quota.

"The candidate who gets the quota will be elected. If no candidate reaches the quota, the candidate with the highest number of countback votes will be elected," election manager Kathy Georgiou said.

A link to join the countback will be available from 9.30am on Monday November 13 at vec.vic.gov.au Candidates and other interested parties can watch the countback.

The result will be published online at vec.vic.gov.au

After serving the Kyneton and surrounding communities for 47 years, Dr Christopher Priest is retiring.

Dr Priest and his wife of 49 years, Lindy, moved from Melbourne to Kyneton in 1975 with their two-month-old baby boy, the first of their five children, Nicholas, Timothy, David, Michael and Catherine.

The much-loved and respected local doctor began practising in Kyneton in 1976 when he joined Dr John Connell and Dr Andrew Shipley's practice on the current Woolworths site. From there, Dr Priest worked in Trentham, Woodend, the old Kyneton Hospital site in Simpson Street, and finally 9-11 Market Street establishing Kyneton Medical Centre, which has grown from his solo practice to now include six doctors and other clinical staff. Patients from Gisborne through to Redesdale also received his care through the on-call roster system.

The medical all-rounder studied at Melbourne University from 1963-1969. In September 1970 a young Dr Priest was posted to South Vietnam where he served as a medical officer during the Vietnam War. Unbeknownst to him, the woman he would marry had been marching the streets of Melbourne, protesting against the war.

With experience in emergency departments, surgery, anaesthetics, psychiatry, general practice and paediatrics, Dr Priest has committed the past 55 years to practicing medicine.

With his wife Lindy and their five young children, Dr Priest immersed himself in the Kyneton community. He ran, played squash, and swam with his children at the local pool. Dr Priest flew light aircraft and is

a life member of the Kyneton Aero Club. He was a doctor at Calder Park Thunderdome and was on the Australian Grand Prix medical team for 25 years.

Doctor Priest healed and saved lives, but in a personal tragedy, lost his youngest son Michael to a car accident in 2001.

A high point was the opening of the new

Kyneton Hospital, Dr Priest remembers the bed race up from Simpson Street up to Caroline Chisholm Drive. His 30 years' interaction with medical students from Melbourne University has been one of his greatest passions.

Dr Priest will remain in Kyneton where he will now concentrate on farming.

Karrinda Lawler is organising a fundraising event ‘A Day for Kobi’ at Pav’s Barber Shop on November 4.

Pav's Barber Shop in Castlemaine is hosting a fundraiser for the family of fiveyear-old Kobi.

Kobi was recently diagnosed with stage four Burkitt's lymphoma and is currently undergoing treatment at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

Burkitt lymphoma is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. NHL is a cancer of the lymphatic system. It develops when the body makes abnormal B lymphocytes. These lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that normally help to fight infections.

When you have a lymphoma, the abnormal lymphocytes build up in lymph nodes or

Karrinda and Kobi's mum became friends many years earlier when they both attended St Mary's Primary School in Castlemaine.

"And we've been friends since then," Karrinda said.

"Kobi told his mum that he had a sore mouth and a sore tummy so she took him to

the doctors for tests.

"The results came back on Grand Final weekend and their whole world tipped upside down.

"My friends and I decided to hold a fundraiser – I'm giving haircuts, there will be a barbecue and a coffee cart. So many people have offered help already. We're hoping to raise as much money as possible to help the family."

A Day for Kobi will held from 10am on Saturday November 4 at Pav's Barber at 236 Barker Street Castlemaine. Raffle tickets are available now at Pav's for $2 a ticket.

Mount Alexander Community Health Advocacy – MACHA – is the new name for Friends of Castlemaine District Community Health or CHIRP. CHIRP convenor Margaret Griffin said the new name more widely reflected their interest in working with and supporting all community health services in the shire.

"Our main purpose is to ensure the continuation of community health services in the shire and work with government at local, state and federal levels to ensure current funding continues as well as looking at options for increased funding needed so community health services can continue to be provided to members of the community," Ms Griffin said.

MACHA is currently seeking people to be part of its committee.

Since the group formed in 2019, its role has been to be an active voice in advocating for community health services in the Mount Alexander Shire.

"Initially, the Friends campaigned for increased funding for CHIRP and as part of the campaign conducted a public meeting in February 2020," Ms Griffin said.

"Last year we successfully conducted a survey focusing on access issues faced by service users due to the relocation of CHIRP to Spencely House and presented the results of the survey to Dhelkaya Health."

The group meets as needed, on average monthly for an hour, usually at 3pm.

Meetings are relatively informal.

Grant Taylor is perfecting his prize-winning jam recipes for entering in the 161st Kyneton Show, which kicks off in four weeks’ time.

Grant's entries are regulars at the Show, and while he has won prizes in the past, he is not resting on his impressive record.

“It’s all about getting it right, about finding the secret ingredient to make the best jam,” he said.

So what’s his secret this year? He’s not telling – it’s a secret!

Entries in the Show’s competitions are now open in most categories until November 14. And while you can enter the traditional way by queuing up at the Showgrounds office from November 9, this year you can also enter online then simply drop your entry off before the cut off time.

Grant chose the online option this year.

“It was a straightforward process to enter online and print out the labels, I can now drop off my labelled jars of jam when the office is open,” he said.

Areas of competition include home and farm produce, jams, preserves, home brewing, horticulture, needlework and knitting, photography, paper skills, craft, writing and drawing as well as the traditional sheep, poultry, horse and dog competitions.

There are hundreds of categories to enter across the areas and sections for all ages and talents.

The Lego competition will be as fiercely contested as it was last year, with the public invited to build a giant Lego mosaic wall, which will progressively reveal itself throughout the day.

The Show’s Carnival night is on Friday November 17 from 5.30pm, with fireworks at 9pm, music, Laser Tag, Meltdown, and other rides and activities, while Show Day Saturday gates open at 9am with an emphasis on free activities including craft tent, Farmer Darryl’s animal nursery, farm workshop, country parkour and a woodchop demonstration.

Primary school students were challenged to prepare a stack of three pancakes with a mixed berry sauce in the first round of the Sacred Heart College Junior Chef Competition held recently.

The Junior Chef competition aims to provide grade four students from six local Catholic primary schools with an opportunity to experience the secondary environment while building on their culinary and teamwork skills.

This competition, held in the college’s Frayne Hospitality Centre, also provided an opportunity for the VET Hospitality students at Sacred Heart to act as mentors to these primary students.

The primary schools used their own methods for selecting the students for their teams, some asking them to provide a written application outlining why they

would like to be involved, with others challenging students to a pancake cook-off to secure their place.

“It was fantastic to see the young people so excited and engaged in cooking. They all worked extremely well in their teams and had obviously practised their recipes several times in advance,” said head of junior school, Haley Galloway.

The teams will take part in the final to select the winning team today (October 24) where they will be challenged to make homemade fettucine pasta.

The winning school will receive a $250 gift voucher to allow them to purchase plants for the school’s kitchen garden.

The team at Sacred Heart College hope this experience will be the start of an interest in cooking for the students involved for years to come.

I am of English/Welsh descent and was granted Australian Citizenship on September 15. The pride that I felt on that day evaporated last night and was replaced by loss, disgust and deep shame and sadness.

It was a simple question to ask. Did the First Nations peoples, the people who’ve lived here continuously for 65,000 years, deserve recognition and a voice in parliament? The obvious answer was a resounding Yes! This question was hijacked and politicised by the Coalition with misinformation being thrown around like confetti.

Anthony Albanese has carried himself with humility, grace and kindness. He is a unique type of politician. One whom I truly believe wants the best for everybody.

He just wants to make the world a better place and isn’t in it for personal or political gain. He is a good man. Even in defeat last night, he spoke eloquently, respectfully and passionately.

Unfortunately the majority of the population went with the No campaign, funded by Fair Australia.

Shame on you! Shame on us!

Despite multiple 'information' meetings about the proposed changes to Black Forest Drive, which a clear majority of local residents rejected, despite local member Mary-Anne Thomas later stating the community had been heard and the road would remain two lanes, despite the road being reconfigured more than a decade ago and then reversed because of the disastrous results, despite the fact RRV used cherry-picked data to support its intentions, despite the fact you could drive up and down Black Forest Drive every day of the week and never see a cyclist, despite the fact the handful of accidents on the road have been caused by either driver inattention or not driving to the conditions rather than the road itself, despite overwhelming evidence that the road does not need reducing to one lane, they’re going to do it anyway.

Alison Joseph, Bullengarook Last year I lodged a complaint with Macedon Ranges Council after a council officer facilitated a large-scale, motorcycle event on an adjoining property, that was prohibited by the planning scheme and contrary to local laws. This council officer then alleged that an anonymous planning complaint had been received against me.

Council has no independent evidence that such a complaint was ever received.

Council threatened me with a warrant, insisted on coming on to my property, and once it had been ascertained that the complaint had no merit, council officers then demanded that I submit a planning permit, in a situation where I am reliably informed no permit was required.

I recently submitted a further complaint about this officer. I then discovered that council has converted 400m2 of my property to Crown land, and that the same officer was involved. These changes occurred without any legal basis, without proper process being followed, and without any notice or consultation with me. Extraordinarily, I believe council staff are able to just hop on a council computer and edit Vicmaps, which then results in alterations to official government Crown land records (LASSI) and, quite disturbingly, to land title information as well. Council management seems perfectly happy with this type of conduct and have refused to reverse the alteration made to my property.

The estate’s only access is via the Harpers Lane intersection with Lauriston Reservoir Road. This solution will force Ambrosia residents to weave their way out. There is no direct access to the train station.

The Harpers Lane intersection is on a hill and a bend. It is very unsafe along that segment of Lauriston Reservoir Road. It is scary. Blinding sun from the west when the sun is setting degrades the already poor visibility. Blinding sun in the east degrades already poor visibility, when the sun is rising in the mornings.

Friends of Kyneton South funded a traffic report on the intersection. The results are damning but never made public. FOKS did not have funds for an expert witness to appear at VCAT. Council did not fund a report to VCAT. VCAT listened to the developer’s traffic expert who said the intersection was acceptable.

FOKS says the problem is that Ambrosia Estate is served by a Road to Nowhere. Its main street goes nowhere. Stops at a farm fence. There is no direct access to Lauriston Reservoir Road.

Planning has failed to provide to Ambrosia’s prospective residents who live on or near its Road to Nowhere. This is annoying and there are other estates to buy into that are well serviced and planned for. The council has been extremely disappointing to FOKS in not having resolved the draft Kyneton South Framework Plan.

The estate is also not serving pedestrians at all. Pedestrians cannot walk safely to the train station along Lauriston Reservoir Road from the Harpers Lane corner. Commuters often leave for work and return home in the dark.

Heavy vehicles using the intersection unsuccessfully negotiate the tight corner at the intersection of Harpers Lane and Lauriston Reservoir. The sign is regularly knocked over and a few weeks ago, a heavy vehicle flattened it.

Those who buy into Ambrosia at Phase 2 or 3 will certainly have wetlands. Street View on Google Maps is some ready evidence.

Planning has failed this estate.

Celebrating regional sonic artistry

Live arts organisation Punctum will next month present its final edition of the Sunday Sonix Series for 2023, which promises to be an exceptional evening celebrating a year of regional sonic artistry.

Over the past two years, in partnership with the Australian Art Orchestra and with support from the Australian Government through the Regional Arts Fund, Punctum has created and produced a professional development program that includes a concert series – Sunday Sonix.

This program has provided a platform for regional musicians and sound artists to delve into innovative music forms through collaboration and to share the results locally with audiences. At 6pm on November 5, talented clarinettist and composer, Aviva Endean, will lead a musical exploration of breath and space in the unique setting of Punctum's ICU basement.

Living between Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung country, Aviva’s artistic practice revolves around bringing together artists and audiences in shared spaces to enliven our capacity for listening.

Aviva’s remarkable work has earned her nominations for two Music Victoria Awards, one for her solo album Moths and Stars, which she pre-launched at a Sunday Sonix, and another for The Cloud Maker – a collaborative project with Australian Art Orchestra. Joining her is local Wamba Wamba man Uncle Ron Murray on the didgeridoo, Matthew Horsley will play the rarely heard Irish Uilleann pipes and internationally acclaimed vocalist and composer Jessica Aszodi will join this very special lineup.

Stroll through the grounds, taking in the breathtaking artwork that harmoniously interacts with the scenic surroundings. Hanging Rock Winery’s annual sculpture exhibition – Art in the Vines – is on show through to April 30, 2024.

Art in the Vines is now in its sixth year and continues to grow in popularity year on year, with people travelling from all over Victoria to see it.

This isn’t just any old art show. Curator, Malcolm Thomson has sought out sculptures from some of Australia’s best-known sculpture artists alongside some very exciting up-andcoming artists. These sculptures and their creators have been selected to make sure there is a great

Macedon Ranges, Hepburn and Bendigo Shires are home to some of Australia’s most talented sculptors.

Over the years Hanging Rock Winery has been able to exhibit many of these such as Tim Jones, Geoffrey Barlett, Jock Clutterbuck, Brigit Heller, Anton Hasell, Simon Normand, Geoffrey Ricardo, Mela Cooke, Matt Harding, Frederick White and many others.

They’re also lucky enough to exhibit interstate artist Steven Glassborrow and international artists, Andreas Buisman and Kerry Canon.

This is a free event, open to the general public from 10am to 5pm, seven days a week.

Croquet pennant all tied up

With five rounds now completed, you would be brave to pick the likely winners in the Northern District Croquet Association pennant competition. Three teams are now tied in both Division 2 and in Division 3, all with 20 points each.

Division 1 is the only division with a clear leader – the still undefeated Kyneton Blue team of Rick Janssen and Len Baker – although they got a massive scare this week from the Macedon Ranges Mt Gisborne team, still aiming to win their first match.

The singles games were 2-2, with Janssen winning both his games, but then Elizabeth Payne and Penny Krstev thrashed Kyneton in the first doubles 7-2. The match result went down to the last hoop of the second doubles game, with Janssen scoring the hoop to tie the games 3-3, and that extra hoop enabled Kyneton to scrape in for the win by just 36-34 hoops. If Mt Gisborne had won that last hoop, it would have been 3535 hoops, and a playoff required.

In Division 2, Kyneton Red and two Quarry Hill teams, the Galahs and Kookaburras, are locked together with 20 points each. However, Kyneton Red holds a slender lead with 16 games won, versus the Galahs with 15, and Kookaburras with 14. All teams have had their bye now, so it’s anybody’s chance to take the title.

This week, the Galahs defeated Kyneton Black 5-1 games, with Kyneton managing to win only the final game of doubles 7-2 after the lunch break, making it another crushing defeat for last season’s winners.

The Galahs pair of Barry Lovell and Colin Scott were in unbeatable form. Meanwhile, the Quarry Hill Kookaburras had an equally convincing win against Kyneton Green 5-1 games. The same thing happened – Kyneton Green’s only win was 7-5 in the second

doubles game after lunch. Division leaders Kyneton Red had the bye this week.

Division 3 is equally hot, with Macedon Ranges Mt Charlie, Maldon Maple and Kyneton Yellow all on 20 points. Mt Charlie narrowly leads with 22 games won versus 21 by Maldon Maple and 15 by Kyneton.

However, both Mt Charlie and Maldon Maple are yet to have their bye, which could open it up for the undefeated Kyneton team to leapfrog them both into the lead.

Notable this week was the very first win for Macedon Ranges Mt Towrong, admittedly a 3-3 games tie against stablemates Mt Robertson, but won on hoops scored 35-29. The singles were all tied up 2-2, with Mt Robertson’s Sue Wild winning both her games. Pairing with substitute Pat Neilson, Mt Robertson took the first doubles in a tight 7-6 game to be leading on games and by 1 extra hoop. However, Mt Towrong’s Norma Mills and Christabel Douglas stormed back with an outstanding 7-0 win in the second doubles to take their first match win this season.

Maldon /Square were no match for the Quarry Hill Parrots team of Chris Scott and super-sub Lois Breadon, with Breadon taking two narrow wins to give the Parrots the match win by 6-0 games.

The top-of-the-table clash between Maldon Maple and Macedon Ranges Mt Charlie was a much closer affair. Mt Charlie’s Olwyn Snape had two fine singles wins, tieing the singles at 2-2, and then each team won a doubles game, making it 3-3 games. However, Maldon Maple’s Cheryl Lang and Ann Metz carried the day by 36-30 hoops.

In one of the most interesting and competitive pennant seasons yet, the final winners in each division will not be known until November 23.

The monthly medal and B-grade winner for the ladies on Wednesday was dedicated committee member Roberta Henry with a nett 72. Lynne Smith took out B-grade with the same tally, which included an eagle on the 18th, and Leanne Delavey had a nett 74 in C-grade.

While top qualifier Jonah Harris, Jason McClure and Tien Ho were comfortable winners in the open section, Pete Robins caused an upset by eliminating second-placed qualifier Terry Gamble.

GOLD MEDAL WINNER All ladies who were medal winners in 2023 played off for the Gold Medal last week, with the winner being Denise Murphy (pictured) with 89-18-71.

The play-off for the October medal was close, Vicki Nettleton carding a nett 75 to finish one clear of Deidre Dawes.

Wednesday ladies: Di Rohde, Sheena Flentjar an Sandra Matthews won the 14-hole ambrose with 48.5 points; the nine-hole winners were Susie Kosa, Janine Notman and Florence Meyer with 31.8.

Decisive wins to Golf, Kyneton

MOUNT MACEDON A quarter of the field played to their handicap or better in Saturday’s par event.

Respective A, B and C grade winners were Richard Payne (8) +1, Trevor Atkins (13) +2 and Sean Bassett (23) +6.

A huge thank-you to volunteers Ray and Cory, as well as president Matt, captain Mitch and members Wayne, Billo, and Nathan who spent the day building a retaining wall at the practice green.

Wednesday’s stableford was a chance to welcome visitor John MacWhirter from Trentham GC. Reigning club champ, Alex Fraser, scorched around the course with a round which included seven birdies.

The third round of Highlands area pennant bowls on Saturday failed to produce any surprises, with runaway wins to Kyneton and Kyneton Golf in division one.

Kyneton is on top of the ladder after demolishing Trentham by 47 shots, while Golf put paid to Broadford by 40 shots. Both home sides claimed maximum points.

Golf’s Rick Seymour, Ricky Turner, Steve Taylor and Adrian Plowman (s) secured a 39-12 victory, the biggest margin for the round. In ideal weather conditions, the two close contests in the top division were at Gisborne and Kilmore.

Gisborne proved competitive against unbeaten Romsey, with a 61-54 margin, with the Peter Williams four eclipsing Aaron Young by seven shots.

Graeme Edwards and Matthew Brundell ensured the visitors secured the points.

At Kilmore, the home side finished strongly to eclipse Lancefield by four shots and build hopes of an eventual finals berth.

The Tigers welcomed Aaron Andrews back as skipper and he secured a two-shot victory.

Fourth round matches this Saturday are Romsey v Kilmore, Trentham v Kyneton Golf, Lancefield v Kyneton, and Gisborne v Diggers Rest.

Division 2 leader Macedon had a runaway victory over Diggers Rest, with the Gary Dickinson four home by 28 shots.

Kyneton Golf failed to master the tricky Broadford green, going down by 14 shots, Woodend found Kilmore too accomplished, and Romsey held off a determined Gisborne by six shots.

The division 3 contest between Gisborne (4) and Romsey was the closest of the round, with the former home by three shots.

ROMSEY On a windy Saturday, all players failed to break their handicap in challenging conditions despite an enormous amount of maintenance being successfully undertaken.

Mick Nicholls Snr (22) was the winner with 32 stableford points, on a countback from Mal Mottram (8). Steve Wilkins (17) came in third on 31.

Wednesday’s weather conditions were perfect, and volunteers had mown an enormous area.

Unfortunately corellas have attacked some areas of the course.

Hugh Williams 93-21-72 returned the best round, ahead of Lorraine Robb 12248-74 and Wendy Gosden 108-32-76.

Rob Slade and Gosden were the NTPs. WOODEND More than 50 players tackled a course in great condition for Saturday’s stableford, with countbacks put to good use.

Daley Smith (26) was the B-grade winner with 38 points, on a countback from Barry Palmer (35).

In A-grade the winner was Chris Holliday (12) on a countback from Shaun Croxford (10).

Maurice Kelly blitzed the mid-week field with 43 stableford points from his handicap of 20.

Myles Moxley (13) and Dennis Barker (11) each had 38.

Manager resigns AFL Central Victoria Commission regional manager, Craig Armistead, has advised the commission he is resigning, effective from October 25.

The commission has thanked the departing manager for his contribution to Central Victorian football and netball.

Redbacks sign up

Romsey Football Netball Club has shown confidence in the football coaches who were in charge during the 2023 season.

Senior coach Justin Sherman (ex-Brisbane player) was re-appointed earlier this year.

Now the Redbacks have announced that Hamish Jedwab (reserves), Michael Richardson (under 19s) and Aaron Paterson (women’s team) are ready for action again in 2022.

Romsey has also re-signed a significant number of its top players, including best and fairest and top goalkicker Jack Jedwab, Nathan Rayment, Corey Pertzel, Nathan Blair, Kane Brinkhuis and Jax Kinnear.

The Redbacks will hold their annual meeting next Monday, October 30, at 7pm.

Free races

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club is staging an eightevent program at Kyneton today (Tuesday).

Admission is free, and the meeting serves as a lead-in to the club’s biggest day, Kyneton Cup Day, on Wednesday, November 8.

The first race today is at 1.30pm, with the ‘lucky last’ at 5pm.

Champion effort in Chicago Kyneton ultramarathon runner Greg Wilson returned home from the USA earlier this month where he competed in the World Age Group Marathon Championship hosted by the Chicago Marathon.

With his performance (three hours, 43 minutes) at the 2022 Townsville Marathon, Wilson was chosen as the Australian representative in the M70-74 age group.

Wilson expected that a head cold, long flight and lack of sleep, combined with a lack of warm-up opportunity, would adversely affect his performance.

"Negotiating through the enormous field of 49,000 runners was another challenge," he said.

"The 2900 age group runners gathered pre-race in a huge marquee and then walked through a sea of humanity – all marathon runners!

"Once our start corral was reached, an hour was spent shivering in singlets on a chilly Chicago morning."

Wilson said the elite corral athletes set off at 7.30am for 42.122 kilometres through the city streets.

"Every 10 minutes, for hours, another corral would follow," he said.

"Corral E shuffled down to the start banner to the strains of the US national anthem, and we were sent on our way.

"Every street was a solid wall of runners, surrounded by enthusiastic supporters.

"There was no sight seeing, as intense concentration was required to avoid other runners and road hazards while maintaining race pace."

Early on, Wilson was joined with a Brazilian woman at the required pace. They progressed through the field past the 3:40 pacers and then the 3:35 pacers.

The five-minute-per-kilometre pace was smooth, even and consistent. Gislene Calligaris and Wilson stayed

together right through to 35 kilometres, where she lifted the pace to the finish.

Wilson maintained his five-minute-per-kilometre pace right through to the finish, which was a turn uphill into Columbus Avenue for 300 metres.

Wilson's finishing time at three hours, 32 minutes, 43 seconds was only five minutes, 26 seconds behind the M70 Championship winner, but within that gap were nine other runners. This placed Wilson 11th of 37 elite M70 finishers.

A record of three wins and two seconds from five attempts in the Lancefield Show dog high jump is hard to match.

Peter 'Farmer' Shannon and wife Prue regard their dogs as members of the family, pampered and extremely well fed. But the kelpies are genuine working dogs as well.

“That keeps them in prime condition, and we thought that 10-year-old ‘Gus’ may have been past his best to win this year,” Peter said.

With the Lancefield Show being absent for several years for a variety of reasons, it was a popular drawcard for 2023 on Sunday, October 15.

And the dog high jump, complete with celebrity commentator Marcus Ryan, drew 15 competitors and many onlookers in the afternoon.

The Shannons live within close walking distance of the Lancefield Park, and ‘Gus’ and 10-months old ‘Buddy’ were primed for the big event.

Fresh from shearing sheep to show attendees how it is done, Peter enticed his dogs to produce their best as the field was whittled down.

‘Gus’ finished up winning by clearing eight feet (2.438 metres), with ‘Buddy’ runner-up, and another young kelpie entered by local horseman Howard Jenkins coming equal third.

The Spring Racing Carnival and the 2023 Kyneton Cup Day are virtually upon us, and this Sunday there’s a great opportunity to go along to the Open Day at Liam Howley Racing’s Kyneton stable next to the racecourse.

It’s a great chance to go down and meet the LHR team, have some breakfast and get up close to some racehorses.

Liam Howley always had a burning ambition to be a successful trainer, and his very interesting international and Australian journey means he now has stables at Kyneton and Macedon Lodge which complement one another.

“In the first few years as a business, we’re really proud of the success we’ve had.

However, I believe the best is yet to come,” Howley told The Express.

He said it’s exciting to be holding the Open Day this Sunday, as the stable won the 2022 Kyneton Cup with Station One and is again targeting this year’s feature race and support card.

a business sense is illustrated by the fact that around 30 staff, including many local and regional personnel, are presently employed looking after around 70 gallopers in work.

“We see the local Cups meetings as really important for our owners and staff,” Howley said in encouraging interested locals to consider attending the Kyneton stable on Sunday from 10am to noon.

A barbecue, coffee and drinks will be provided, and the Spring Carnival and Kyneton Cup Day are certain to be discussed.

Liam Howley Racing has introduced quite a number of new owners in the Macedon Ranges to the ‘Sport of Kings’.

“Our staff are energetic and have a true love for horses in their care.

Malmsbury green top

A green top wicket on Saturday favoured bowlers as Malmsbury’s Jensen Shield side played on the turf for the first time this season.

Paceman Kyle Fisher (pictured) captured 6-30 from eight overs as St Anthonys were skittled for 95.

In reply, Malmsbury crumbled to lose by nine runs despite Quentin Kebble contributing 35.

A fine team bowling performance enabled Malmsbury Green to bundle home side Kilmore out for 90.

With a small target to chase five members of the de Podolinsky family proved too much for Kilmore, with young Rilke blasting 42 and his father Paul 29.

SP PORTS WRAP Vernon 109 – Macedon win GDCA scores Bill West

There were plenty of highlights in McIntyre Cup 1sts cricket on Saturday, including Gisborne’s inform Riley Vernon scoring 109 not out as captain for the day, and Macedon breaking through for its first win with Daniel Trotta slamming a quick fire 92.

Vernon stepped up as captain with his older brother Jarryd unavailable for the top of the table clash with Sunbury United.

United scored 208 largely due to 78 from the consistent Damian Edwards, but Gisborne’s batters always held the upper hand after Vernon and Will Mackay shared a second-wicket stand of 102. This came after Warren Kelly departed for 26 after his blistering 140 against Macedon the previous Saturday.

Riley Vernon is on target for a huge tally of runs this season, and his 109 from 105 deliveries included 11 fours and two sixes as Gisborne cruised to 4/209 to remain unbeaten. Rahul Singh chipped in with an unbeaten 30.

Adding to Gisborne’s batting power, the club recruited top order Maribyrnong Park batter Shaun Guerra last week.

Promoted to the top grade, Macedon was in strife at 3/27 against Sunbury Kangaroos at Tony Clarke Reserve before Trotta and coach Tim Berzins came to the rescue with a stand of 96 for the fourth wicket.

Trotta’s 92 came from 85 balls, and Berzins contributed 28, and Cameron Howlett an unbeaten 32 in a tally of 9/200.

The Kangaroos tried hard, but fell 12 runs short at 9/188.

Reigning premier Romsey had to work hard to stay unbeaten after Rupertswood compiled 162 with Nathan Shoesmith scoring a half century.

At 5/110 Romsey needed a partnership, and allrounder Taylor Stevenson 51 and Ben Way 28 did the job though three wickets fell with scores level leaving Aaron Paterson to hit the winning four in a tally of 8/166.

Chasing Diggers Rest/Bulla’s 5/168 (Tristan Krizanic 85 not out) Woodend showed plenty of character after skipper Marcus Stewart was run out for 4.

Daniel Easterley scored a half century and Warren Else an unbeaten 31 to enable the Woodsmen to reach 5/171 in the 43rd over.

Riddell broke through to defeated Aintree by 30 runs in Johnstone Shield, with 436 runs scored in the afternoon.

In McIntyre Cups 2nds Chris Axton took the long handle to the Kangaroos, hitting an unbeaten 88 (10 fours, three sixes) as Macedon compiled a winning 9/236.

Daniel Trotta hit a quick fire 92 for Macedon.

Yallop conveys a message Bill West

Former Australian Test cricket captain, Graham Yallop, received an enthusiastic welcome at Hanging Rock Cricket Club on Sunday morning.

Yallop, a long-time coach at various levels, told the young players the day was designed to enable them to learn as much as they can.

“You never know where you are going to end up,” Yallop said, outlining the career path for cricket for young players starting at country clubs and moving right through the ranks, if they prove to be good enough.

Shaun Brown said the aim was to make the occasion fun, and a learning experience.

The importance of asking questions to the various coaches present was emphasised.

Yallop congratulate Hanging Rock Cricket Club on its initiative to provide the clinic, and wished the club and its players well for the future.

Hanging Rock president, Peter Walsh, said Sunday’s clinic was designed to complement the club’s coaching.

“Our main focus is junior player and retention, whilst making the game enjoyable for participants.”

At present, Hanging Rock has 40 registered junior players, including six girls, on the books.
