Gisborne police are seeking public information and investigating a suspicious fire at Jacksons Creek Reserve that destroyed a public barbecue two weeks ago.

On Dec. 12, a McDonald's cup full of accelerant was left on a heated barbecue at about 4pm. It is suspected the cup melted slowly and exploded once the accelerant made contact with the heated surface.

Parkgoers responded to the scene after hearing the explosion, in the Reserve's rotunda, and dialled 000. Authorities extinguished the blaze and no one was injured.

Senior Constable Tunbridge told the Express it was a sparkler bomb, of sorts, that would have burned slowly before the barbecue caught fire. He added park witnesses didn't see any prior activity at the rotunda, and it could have been an innocent mistake, but police aren't ruling out foul play.

In a statement, Macedon Ranges Police said, "thankfully, no serious damage was done as the fire was extinguished quickly, but with fire season in full swing this was a close call".

This is the fourth fire the Express has reported on at Jackson's Creek Reserve, this year.

Potential danger at Romsey removed

Macedon Ranges Shire Council acted to remove unknown waste material strewn near the corner of Main and Barry streets at Romsey last week.

Residents feared the material spread across the footpath may have contained asbestos and uncertainty saw the council move to clear the site.

Dom Testoni, council's director of assets and operations, said the council was notified of waste material last Monday and staff responded that same day.

"Officers concluded that the material appeared to be fibre cement sheet or similar, however, without being able to determine whether or not the material contained asbestos, proper precautions were taken to safely clean up and dispose of the material that same day through a licensed asbestos removal company," he said.

"It was difficult for officers to ascertain where the waste had come from, due to the wide spread of materials – it may have been illegally dumped, fallen from a vehicle, or potentially a result of storm damage from the weekend."

It was noted the nearby former Romsey Hotel building appeared to be in the same or similar condition as previous condition reports, when a vandalism incident in 2022 led to sheeting falling on the footpath below – that sheeting tested negative for asbestos at that time.

From Cybermen to Castlemaine Ben Harding

– A life in colour and costume

When local artist Alexandra Tynan (known in her early career as Sandra Reid) laughed about “disturbing the psyche of a whole generation,” she’s talking about one thing: the Cybermen.

In 1966, a young Alexandra found herself unexpectedly assigned to Doctor Who while working on the staff at the BBC. “I used to tell the designer in my office, ‘Oh, I’d hate to work on that show!’” she said, shaking her head.

“Next thing I knew, they swapped her off it and put me on. And you didn’t say no!”

Armed with a tiny budget and a lunchtime sketch she dashed off before a meeting, Alexandra created the first Cybermen — fragile, haunting, part-metal survivors of a ruined planet. Those early designs, with their eerie 'jug-ear' headgear, went on to terrify children for decades.

“People still come up to me and say they had to hide behind the sofa,” she laughed.

“I disturbed everyone — but apparently in an exciting way!”

The BBC continues to celebrate her legacy. In 2017, she was invited to Cardiff to see the modern recreation of her Cybermen for a Peter Capaldi storyline. Watching them on a giant screen with a full orchestra, she finally experienced what audiences had felt all along.

“It was the first time in my life I was frightened by the Cybermen,” she admitted.

But Alexandra’s career stretches far beyond science fiction. After moving to Australia as a young '£10 Pom', she built a new

creative life from the ground up — eventually joining the ABC and working across television, theatre, and international co-productions. One of her fondest memories is designing Warm Nights on a Slow Moving Train, starring the late Wendy Hughes.

“That was a costume designer’s joy,” she said.

“Wendy was so glamorous, so brilliant — and such a lovely person.

It was very sad when we lost her.”She later returned to the UK to work for the renowned Glyndebourne Opera House, eventually heading its costume department and mentoring tertiary students across the UK. “Working with young people has always been my joy,” she said.

“Encouraging them creatively — that’s what’s worthwhile.”

Now happily settled in Castlemaine, Alexandra is part of a lively circle of friends who “celebrate anything at any opportunity”.

Don’t risk a fine

Motorists are being warned to adhere to the road rules or face a costly holiday period, as Operation Roadwise is active now and continues until 11.59pm on January 1.

The state-wide policing operation will have a significant focus on impaired driving, with police conducting 24/7 alcohol and drug testing throughout the operation.

Police intelligence shows that December is the worst month for drink driving offences, recording the highest number of drink driving detections and the most collisions where the driver was over the blood alcohol limit.

Acting Senior Sergeant Luke Grelis of Kyneton Police said police would be targeting high-risk areas, including major arterials and popular holiday hotspots across regional areas.

"The festive period is synonymous with events and celebrations, which often result in alcohol and drug consumption. There will be zero tolerance for drink and drug driving over the Christmas and New Year period, and motorists should expect to be tested while out on the roads," SenSgt Grelis said.

"Driving is a complex task that requires concentration, judgement and decision making.

Alcohol affects these skills and your ability to safely control a vehicle and miscalculation of alcohol consumption is one of the most common reasons given to police when drivers are caught over the limit.

"If you’re planning to have a drink over the festive, don’t drive – leave the car at home, arrange a designated driver, and utilise alternative transport, we don’t want to see anybody getting behind the wheel if they’re impaired."

With Boxing Day one of the busiest days for travel across the state, police are urging those hitting the roads to be patient, avoid distractions and take regular breaks to prevent fatigue.

Reserve in sight for men’s shed Amy Hume Riddells Creek Men's Shed is seeking a lease on a small area within the Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve.

The group lodged a petition with 545 signatures supporting the move to Macedon Ranges Shire Council last week.

Riddells Creek Men's Shed has been seeking a shed since its auspice agreement with the Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House ended in 2021.

While shed members have continued to meet for coffee catch-ups, not having a home base means activities are limited.

The men need somewhere to set up their tools to work on large projects, and share skills, stories and support while they work. It's what the Men's Shed movement is best known for.

A glimmer of hope for a potential men's shed site was presented in October when the old Riddells Creek Fire Station came on the market.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council was offered first right of refusal on the 67

Main Road site as the state government prepared for the brigade's relocation.

During council discussions, it was recognised as a site that could house several community groups currently seeking homes.

Riddells Creek Men's Shed expressed interest in the potential, recognising the Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve's master plan could be years before completion.

However, the state government's confidential estimate of the old CFA site was described as "significant" and the council sought a time extension on to the deadline.

The council has also written to local MP Mary-Anne Thomas requesting thorough consultation with the Riddells Creek Men’s Shed and the Riddells Creek Lions Club on the site’s future use.

Riddells Creek Men's Shed members can expect the council to prepare a report in response to their petition for a site lease within the Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve to be presented to the council in March.

Kyneton’s parking woes

During the busiest time of the year, parking in Kyneton’s CBD is more difficult than ever with construction works blocking out vital retail parking spaces on Mollison Street.

A week out from Christmas, a conga-line of tradie vans, utes and construction sites wiped out 17 parking spaces in the town’s centre, leaving shoppers and local businesses frustrated.

Local business owner Brian Wilson said while investment and long-overdue building repairs were good to see, the impact on parking in the lead up to Christmas was not good for the local economy.

“It’s a busy time for everyone, but if people can’t park, they can’t shop local and that affects businesses, jobs and even simple things like collecting the mail from the post office,” he said.

Mr Wilson suggested that building permits and council-approved or endorsed traffic management plans needed to better consider the potential impacts on local people.

He also questioned the wisdom of granting permits for nonessential works during peak retail and tourist periods.

Rebecca Stockfeld, council's director of planning and environment, said that Mollison Street was a state-managed road, therefore was subject to certain approvals – such as a TMP (traffic management plan) – required through the Department of Transport and Planning.

"Council has cited this paperwork in relation to works at 107/109 Mollison Street and has approved a Regulation 116 form (Report and Consent for Protection of the Public – required for building works creating hazards over public land) and also issued an Asset Protection Permit," Ms Stockfeld said.

"Planning permits generally includes a condition to begin works within two years of the permit being issued.

"These permits generally do not specify restrictions on the time of year works can be completed – an exception may be if a proposed TMP was to clash with a known public event."

The parking constraints come at time when businesses in Kyneton are working hard to offset a decline in tourist numbers and increases in rates, government fees and taxes.

Subdivision approved at Trentham

A nine-lot subdivision on the southwestern side of Trentham township has been approved.

At Hepburn Shire Council's final meeting for 2025, an in-depth 44-page report was presented with the planning department recommending the subdivision go ahead with various conditions.

The residential land involved has its main frontage to Mulcahys Road, with a bowl design.

This allows for blocks ranging in size from 819 square metres to 1270 square metres.

Council received 15 letters from objectors who raised a range of issues.

The recommended approval included clauses that tightened up on aspects put forward in the original application.

During discussion, road safety issues, in particular on a bend, were referred to and Coliban Water has yet to provide specific

requirements.

Cr Don Henderson expressed concern that if council delayed making a decision, the applicant might go to VCAT. Approval was granted on a 4-3 vote, with those in opposition not necessarily against the proposal overall.

Crs Henderson, Pat Hockley, Shirley Cornish and Tony Clark voted in favour, with Crs Lesley Hewitt, Brian Hood and Tim Drylie opposed.

Grants for food relief

Woodend Neighbourhood House has been successful in securing funding through the state government's Community Food Relief Program.

The neighbourhood house will receive $22,500 to train volunteers, purchase digital tools for improved data accuracy/reporting, along with supplies for a new on-site community garden.

The new garden will grow culturally appropriate produce that meets growing demand. Other nearby food relief organisations to benefit from the funding are Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre, which will establish a kitchen to deliver weekly food relief, and Lyonsville-based Health Future Australia, which will help provide school lunches to disadvantaged students.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will consider renaming a footbridge in honour of the late Cr Christine Walker.

The Clarke Street footbridge over Willimigongon Creek at Mount Macedon would be renamed the 'Christine Walker Footbridge' under a new proposal.

Last week, councillors voted in favour of consulting the community on the name change.

Christine Walker died on August 1 this year while serving on council. She was first elected on a countback on November 13, filling a vacancy, and was subsequently reelected in the 2024 council election.

Walker was a passionate advocate for the replacement of the Clarke Street footbridge, a project that has now been delivered.

Food insecurity increasing A concerning increase in food insecurity across the Loddon Campaspe region has been highlighted in the Healthy Loddon Campaspe's 2025 Active Living Census preliminary finding.

The latest data shows that 18 per cent of residents in the region are experiencing low or very low food security, meaning they have faced challenges in accessing enough nutritious food over the past 12 months. This figure has almost doubled since 2019, when 9.2 per cent of residents reported low or very low food insecurity.

The 2025 ALC included a more comprehensive set of questions on food security than previous surveys that provides a richer understanding of the issue within the Loddon Campaspe region.

Respondents were asked about experiences such as worrying food would run out, being unable to afford balanced meals, and reducing meal size or skipping meals due to financial constraints.

Healthy Loddon Campaspe spokesperson, Jess Howard, said the findings were particularly relevant as the festive season approached.

"Food insecurity is a growing issue in our region, and this time of year can be especially challenging for families and individuals," Ms Howard said.

"Everyone in the community has the right to access sufficient healthy, affordable food to support their health and wellbeing.

These early findings give us a clearer picture of the scale of the problem and will help inform future planning and action.

"In-depth, locally relevant data like that we receive from the Active Living Census is something most regions don’t have access to. It provides a unique opportunity to make evidencebased decisions, advocate for resources, and design programs that respond directly to local needs. This is critical for tackling complex issues like food insecurity."

Healthy Loddon Campaspe and other local organisations are also supporting food relief efforts and working together to address food insecurity within the region in a number of ways, including local food relief programs and community lunches, and via strategies like the Flourish Regional Food System Framework.

While this early release provides a regional snapshot, detailed findings broken down by local government area will be available in the first half of 2026.

Castlemaine's Community Lunch has provided nourishment and companionship to the community for more than 25 years.

Local chef Duang Tengtrirat, who has been responsible for coordinating the lunches for the past two years, is now passing on the coordinator's baton.

Castlemaine Community House community development manager, Kez Jennings, said while it had only been two years, it had been an impactful two years because of the way Duang gathered the community

around her.

"It's really significant how she has connected the volunteers and put so much heart into the food and connection and everything she does," Kez said.

Duang told the Express that being the CCH Community Lunch coordinator had been the most satisfying job she had ever had.

"I work with the love and generosity of the people who give the food, the people who help make the food, and the people who come and eat," she said.

"Everyone has a common community-loving spirit that we

share. Castlemaine is an amazing place, there's no better place to do that than here."

The ingredients for the lunch are supplied by Castlemaine Harvest and the Food Garden, but if Duang puts a call out for lemons, a barrel will be donated by someone in the community.

"If I need a bucket of mint, five buckets of mint arrive," she said.

"I started with about 10 volunteers, and now there are close to 20. We are all foodies, we just love being together, and the energy in the kitchen is just palpable and fun.

It's a great place to be."

The bells should be ringing in Riddell

The bells should be ringing at St John's Anglican Church in Riddells Creek this Christmas season to celebrate the appointment of one of its former vicars, the Reverend Dr Bradley Billings, as Archbishop of Adelaide, one of the oldest and most prestigious seats of the ancient church in Australia.

But there will be little cheer in the 140-year-old Riddell church — or 167 years, depending on your thinking.

The church was originally founded by the man whom the town is named after, Scotsman John Carre Riddell, a pioneer settler and a member of the early Legislative Council of Victoria.

The pretty little church that Riddell nursed through its earliest phases, suddenly closed down six months ago, apparently due to failing attendances and finances.

Dr Billings, currently serving as the Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Melbourne, brings to Adelaide a wealth of experience in parish ministry, theological education and senior church governance.

He has served as Assistant Bishop since 2016, most recently as the Bishop of the Oodthenong area, which covers the northern and western areas of Greater Melbourne, extending to Gisborne and Geelong.

At his new seat at St Peter's Cathedral in Adelaide, he succeeds the Reverend Geoffrey Smith, who retired in November.

Before consecration as Bishop in Victoria, Dr Billings served as Archdeacon of Stonington and Glen Eira, as the vicar of parishes in Toorak and Gisborne — and curate in Frankston.

Dr Billings was the padre at St John's for several years at the turn of the century and helped the church ladies establish the highly successful Op Shop in Station Street, which has helped finance the three churches in the parish.

A popular man, he was perhaps best known for his research on the history of the little church, which was first founded on property owned by Riddell and his cousin, Thomas Ferrier Hamilton.

As Billings wrote: "This church operated from as early as 1858, soon after the first railway workers arrived to quarry the stone for the two railway bridges. Services

were held with the Vicar of St Paul's, Gisborne, travelling to Riddells Creek, usually on a Sunday afternoon.

We even had a visit from the Archbishop of Melbourne, Charles Perry, in February 1860.

"In 1859, a Church of England Denomination School was opened on the current site of the Senior Citizens Hall in the main street of the town. It had enrolment of 62 children.

"The first head teacher was Mr Kettlewell, who was ably assisted by his wife. Classes were taken in the back rooms, with the front rooms used as a general store and a butcher's shop.

"At one time, the head teacher was using a butcher's block as his desk. This school was later taken over by the government and became the Riddells Creek State School, relocating across the road soon after."

Dr Billings' fascinating account of early Riddells Creek continues: "After the completion of railway construction in 1850, the township gradually moved up the hill (along Gisborne Road) to the north side of the creek....and the railway workers moved on. (As present day historian Robin Godfrey has explained, the old site of the church was next to the famous colonial nursery run by John Smith, who provided trees for the town's parks and streets — and also for the Botanic Gardens in Melbourne.)

Dr Billings continued: "The church was relocated to within the bounds of the township, on the present site of the church today. The church was consecrated in on October 16, 1864. On December 12, 1926, a new church (was) built. The old church, which stood a few yards away, remained in use for a number of years as a church hall."

This means that in its latest iteration, St John's Church, one of the oldest buildings in Riddell, will turn 100 next year. However, celebrations to mark the event seem unlikely given that the building has been closed to worshippers since July.

"Another event of great significance was the inaugural service of the Blessing of the Plough on May 1, 1949," Dr Billings wrote in his history. "This was the first plough service to be held in Australia, coming from an ancient Former vicar at St John’s Anglican Church in Riddells Creek, the Revertradition within the Church in England." end Dr Bradley Billings, has been appointed Archbishop of Adelaide.

The ceremony was held every year until the closure of services at the church in July.

Hadley Cole, Connecting Country At Connecting Country’s 2025 AGM we wiped away a tear or two as we said farewell to Connecting Country stalwart and superstar Marie Jones. Marie has been involved with the organisation since its inception and has at one point or another held every single position on the executive committee, from treasurer, to president, secretary and all roles in between.

Connecting Country is a community-based not-for-profit organisation that operates at a landscape scale to restore biodiversity across the Mount Alexander region. Our mission is to support community led land restoration action across public and private land to build biodiversity resilience in our landscape in response to climate change.

In 2007, Marie was instrumental in the establishment of Connecting Country. Over the past 17 years she has worked tirelessly to ensure that Connecting Country is successful and sustainable.

She has been involved in at least four sub-committees of the organisation including the Landcare Steering Group, where she provided hours of support and mentorship to the various staff that took up the role as the local Landcare Facilitator.

Marie began her volunteer career in the local community over thirty years ago! Throughout this time, she has guided many projects that will have a lasting impact on the local environment, heritage and people across the Chewton, Castlemaine and entire Mount Alexander region. She has been involved in many local community groups including, Golden Point Landcare, Post Office Hill Action Group, Friends of the Box Iron-bark Forests, and many more!

In 2024 Marie’s dedication to volunteering over the past three decades was recognised when she received the Joan Kirner Victorian Landcare Award. It was no surprise to the Connecting Country team when Marie’s name was called out. We all knew

For many, it’s also the holiday season: a chance to leave our worries at home, pack a bag, and go away. But while it may be time to take a lovely break from the relentless day-to-day rigours of everyday life, please don’t leave your conscience behind as well.

Venturing into a souvenir shop on a recent holiday trip to Cairns, I was horrified to find kangaroo paws (actual paws, not replicas, not even the flowers) for sale. What kind of sadist thinks an animal body part makes a charming holiday keepsake? Please don’t buy into this kind of grotesque trade: not paws, not testicles, not fur. It’s nasty, and it’s completely unnecessary. Decoration with dead things shouldn’t feature in your own Home Beautiful.

So my plea this holiday season is simple: don’t forget your moral compass. We all do foolish things on holiday: drink too much, flirt with the wrong people, make questionable choices with our time and money. But please don’t let your holiday decisions harm animals. Don’t buy possum-fur scarves from zoo gift shops or, if you’re venturing further afield, mink hats or jackets from market vendors or up-scale boutiques, or

novelty souvenirs made from dead animals.

If you wouldn’t eat non–dolphin-safe tuna at home, why would you eat it on holiday?

If you don’t eat meat or fish at home, don’t suddenly abandon that principle abroad.

And don’t eat whale in Norway, puffin in Iceland, or tortoise or dog somewhere else simply because you feel it’s exotic. Take your home ethics with you when you travel.

Similarly, if you visit a facility that keeps wildlife in captivity, make sure it is genuinely humane and that the animals are well cared for. Think twice — and ask questions — about elephant rides, tiger selfies, dolphin shows, or shark cage diving. Be informed about what you’re supporting, not just entertained.

We all draw our ethical lines in different places. I had my photo taken with a koala in Cairns; I’m comfortable with that, though I know many wildlife-lovers are not. I wear leather shoes but no fur. But ignorance is never an excuse. Find out what you’re buying into and question whether it’s really okay.

If you wouldn’t normally drink snake wine, or eat foie gras — and really, why would you? — please don’t do it just because you’re on holiday. A change of location is not a moral reset. Australian animals matter, and so do animals everywhere.

This year has been a big year for YIMBY community compost in Castlemaine and surrounds. We end the year with 43 composters, with 23 of those joining us just this year! These people are turning the food scraps of 573 households and 23 local businesses into wonderful rich compost in their backyards and helping improve our soils for local food production.

We now have composters in Taradale, Chewton, Campbells Creek, Harcourt and Guildford as well as growing numbers in the Castlemaine ‘suburbs’.

YIMBY is now handling about 1800 kgs of food scraps each week, quite a logistical undertaking, and mostly done with human (and microbial) power and loads (and loads) of gifted time from our composters and helpers.

The numbers are impressive, the hours are amazing and the quality of the compost is unparalleled, but it’s the community connections that keep surprising and inspiring us.

It’s now too hard to get all of us YIMBYs (including helpers) together at the one time in the one place, (see photo for about half

of us at the end-of-year gathering) so, we have consolidated our composting ‘clusters’ approach, grouping our composters by location for connection and support.

If a composter is going away for a break, or is unwell, they reach out to their near-by cluster friends to provide back-up and support. Clusters also do things like; help each other with straw collection, share tools and resources, help turn each other’s composts, collect autumn leaves and just gather for fun.

New composting duo, neighbours Lucy and Dave in North Castlemaine Cluster, invited all the food scraps contributors from their street to come and have a look at their composting process. It was a fun and connecting way for neighbours to meet and witness how the food scraps they contribute were being cycled back into soil-improving compost by Dave and Lucy in their neighbourhood.

It is stories like these, and the many more that YIMBY folk share with us, that make doing what we do feel so worthwhile.

Connection, not just collection, as we like to say.

There is much talk about ‘The Circular Economy’ and ‘closing loops’, and it is happening, sporadically, here and there.

But significant change probably requires a shift in how we view the world and our place in it. Maybe, when we no longer see ‘waste’ and just see wonderful nutrients, ready to be returned to the place of highest value, then we will see cycles really starting to close.

This shift doesn't require big trucks and large, energy intensive machinery. It doesn't need big companies with big contracts and higher rates. But it does need a community who can see the value in our resources and who want to get involved in making the most of them together.

Expressions of interest are now open for young people aged 12–17 to join Macedon Ranges Shire Council's Youth Council Working Group.

The group will help shape how the shire's new youth council is formed which is expected to be established next year.

A MRSC youth council is expected to comprise nine councillors (three per council ward) and would serve a two-year term from June.

Youth councillors would meet formally to discuss and provide input on decisions that affect young people across the shire for council consideration.

MRSC's Youth Council working Group will help design the youth council from the ground up — deciding what the recruitment process looks like, how to get the message out there, and how it works.

Those involved in the working group do not necessarily need to have an interest in becoming a future youth councillor.

"We have had volunteers come and go over the years but everyone is determined to see the run continue and we always have people prepared to give up their time on Christmas Day to help spread a little Christmas joy," he said.

Guildford Grumpies secretary Steve Cole said many of their members fondly remembered the Santa Run from when they were children and wanted to help

to ensure the former Apex members could continue to spread Christmas cheer across the ever-growing Castlemaine and district community.

"We are really keen to bring that magic to a new generation and this is one of our major funding contributions each year," he said.

As reported back in August, the former Apex Club members were also gifted a brand new set of hand bells handcrafted by the team at Billmans Foundry Castlemaine so you will definitely hear when Santa is on his way!

In 2025 Santa and his helpers will undertake five runs across the local region.

Volunteers will gather from 6.30am and hit the road from around 7-7.30am on runs throughout Castlemaine and Campbells Creek, out to Chewton and Elphinstone and Guildford.

With housing estates across the region growing in size they may be a little later than usual as they get around to everyone.

Members of the former Apex Club of Castlemaine will be out in force again this Christmas Day as part of their annual Santa Run. This year marks the 88th anniversary of the beloved annual Santa Run, which has cemented its place in the hearts and minds of locals over the past eight decades.

The Guildford Grumpies Car Club Inc has once again made a generous donation to help support the run to locations across Mount Alexander Shire.

Past Apexian Stephen Cooper said they were proud to have kept the long-running tradition alive thanks to the dedication of their volunteers and the support of the Grumpies and the local community.

"It actually began during the Depression in 1937 and saw Apexians handing out apples donated by local orchards and hams from Castlemaine Bacon Company," Stephen said.

These days the volunteers visit streets and towns across the shire handing out lollies and icy poles to celebrate the festive season. Donations from the community have helped to keep the 88 year tradition alive despite the club disbanding back in 2002.

"Many local families throw us a gold coin or two as we travel around and this has helped to keep things ticking over to ensure the tradition can be enjoyed by the

Be wary of 'them/us' thinking

John Shaw, Woodend Trying to get one’s head around the Bondi tragedy is difficult.

What strikes me is the need to understand where hate/bigotry/racism comes from and whether there are any doable things one can do to minimise their negative impacts.

Below are some suggestions: 1. Eliminate/limit the use of the word 'hate'. It’s a destructive emotion, escalates tensions and makes dealing with difficult situations almost impossible. The word pushes people into more extreme positions and can contribute to people feeling they are justified in taking violent action.

2. Be wary of adopting 'them/us' thinking. 'Them/us' highlights differences, often perceived negative ones, and reduces recognition of what we have in common. 'Them/us' thinking makes it easy to oversimplify/demonise other people, and makes communication/understanding more difficult. 'Them/us' tribalism is the very opposite of what is required if we want social cohesion.

3. Try to get some form of balance between conforming to other expectations, and the need to be an individual. Not getting a balance results in relying on others for one’s opinions/ identity, being beholden to the group and not being able to think independently. Being excessively individual runs the risk of lacking empathy/understanding of others, being excessively self-centred and not understanding that some conformity is sensible.

4. Adopt a 'live and let live' approach. You can be different, others can be different and as long as your difference does not impact negatively on others, it’s okay.

5. Let our values be evidenced by what we do, rather than what we say we believe in.

6. Be wary of politicians who claim to have all the answers. Acknowledging doubt/don’t know/don’t have an answer is okay.

7. Don’t fall for the trap of thinking that any problem has to be solved by governments. Governments are there to reflect and represent who we are. As individuals we need to be clear on who we are, what’s important, and behave in ways that contribute to the common good.

Holding it against the tide Trevor Scott, Central Vic Climate Action, Castlemaine I'd like to share this poem and my thoughts on my recent involvement in the People's Blockade organised by Rising Tide.

For the very first time, the port had been closed to coal ships by our actions, rather than by negotiated agreement. In previous blockades, up until 2023, in meetings between the protestors, the police and the harbour master, it was agreed that the port would be closed down for a given amount of time. That time in the past was 30 hours and was usually from 10am Saturday morning to 4pm on Sunday afternoon. It was agreed that the harbour would be closed to coal ships for this period, leaving it free for swimmers and kayakers to protest safely. Since 2023, presumably due to breaches of these rules by the protestors, there is no longer any agreement. Although it makes it more difficult and less safe for police and protestors alike, it is necessary if we are serious about getting our message across. If our governments had listened to the scientists' warning, going right back to expert advice from James Hansen, NASA scientist in 1988, we would have a transition plan in place by now and we wouldn't be exporting the huge quantities of coal and gas that we are. Unfortunately, our government has let us down again on this vital issue of climate change, and we have to try and put a halt to this madness ourselves. Christmas is a time of people getting together and celebrating a day of remembrance, peace and fellowship with friends and strangers alike; and the hope of good things that will come.I’d just like to give a shout out to all those in Castlemaine responsible for the Christmas tree bows and the bunting adorning the verandas in Barker and Mostyn streets. Well done everyone for buying the net for the bows and tying them on (not an easy task).

To those who sourced fabric, cut the triangles then spent how many hours sewing them onto the ribbon and then putting them up. They look fantastic. A big thank you from me.

Next year all we need is a Christmas tree in Victory Park.

Christmas kindness

A staff-led initiative at Dhelkaya Health is bringing practical support and kindness to members of the community at Christmas.

The Christmas Tree Project began in 2014 following the renovation of theatres at the Castlemaine campus.

After returning to work, staff were overwhelmed by generous Christmas treats from colleagues. Rather than letting this generosity go to waste, a single box was packed and shared with local housing support services. The response was deeply positive and inspired something more.

The following year, Christmas-wrapped donation boxes were placed across hospital departments and the initiative became known as the Christmas Tree Project.

Staff embraced the idea, and it has continued to grow ever since, now including Maldon Hospital.

This year, 20 donation boxes were placed across most departments.

Donations of food and toiletries are sorted and repacked into smaller Christmas hampers, which are adjusted by housing support staff to meet individual needs before being distributed within the community.

Over the years, stories of gratitude from recipients have highlighted the powerful impact of this simple gesture. Taking only a few hours each year, the Christmas Tree Project is a lasting example of the generosity and compassion of Dhelkaya Health staff, delivering thoughtful kindness to those who need it most.

Bohemian re-launch

Get ready for Hot Variety 4!

Local artist and author Anne Rittman is thrilled to announce the launch of the official reprint of the book she co-authored with fellow artist Maz Wilson, Bohemian Brunswick Street.

The new edition has been expanded to a massive 710 pages and has taken 17 years to assemble. The book will be officially relaunched at the Castlemaine Library today, December 23, at 11am.

It has been described by the library as a book of outstanding quality.

Anne says Bohemian Brunswick Street is the voice of a street where artists lived and worked in Fitzroy in the 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond.

It takes the form of interviews and photographs from personal archives, and provides a fascinating insight into the unique culture of bohemian life lived by artists at this time.

"It details the organic arts movement that evolved out of Brunswick Street and has a connection to Castlemaine with many of those artists from Fitzroy and Northcote having subsequently settled here," Anne says.

"The original book focused on some of the key people who were pivotal at that time. However, the sizeable new edition delves more into the artists themselves, their stories and their diverse fields of work," she said.

"The meteoric rise of Brunswick Street was a cultural explosion of art, theatre, fashion, music, sexuality, feminism, politics and culture, the likes of which we will never see again,"Anne said.

"Many of the artists and groups that found their humble beginnings in Brunswick Street have gone on to be household names today," she said.

The book will be on sale with an artists discount for those who buy the book on the day. All copies signed on request!

Castlemaine's Hot and Crusty Country Bakery in Barker Street has set up 'Santa's Corner' for the second year and is offering community members the chance to call in and take a photo with Santa!

Hot and Crusty owner Geraldine Delmenico said she just loved Christmas and wanted to do something to give back to the community that supported them.

"One of our talented staff members, Mandy Norfolk, constructed Santa's beautiful chair and we have been collecting Christmas decorations to create a dedicated space where community members of all ages can call in and take their Santa photo on their phone free of charge.

"We know a lot of families and individuals are doing it tough with the cost-of-living crisis and we wanted to bring a smile to people's faces and spread a little Christmas magic," Geraldine said.

Santa will be visiting Hot and Crusty today and Wednesday from 12-3.30pm.

Castlemaine artist Heather Murrowood was thrilled to launch her inaugural exhibition at the Grist Bakery gallery space at Wesley Hill on December 8.

Heather has had a challenging life suffering from various illnesses and a debilitating spinal cord injury. She is gearing up for what will be her 33rd surgery shortly, but sees painting as an escape and a way to combat her ongoing health struggles.

"I enjoy painting a variety of subjects, all close to me heart, from Jesus to flowerfilled gardens. I love to include other items such as doilies, china and other special pieces in my works," she said.

Be sure to call in and catch Heather's exhibition at Grist before it wraps up later today, Tuesday December 23.

You can also find some of Heather's work currently on show as part of the Artists of the Goldfields exhibition now on at the Castlemaine Market Building.

After a six-year hiatus from wine competitions, Macedon Ranges producer Pegeric's Errol's Leap Riesling has once again starred in a major international event.

Pegeric Riesling was awarded a gold medal and was a finalist for the best white wine of the show at the 2025 Cathay Global Wine and Spirits Awards in Hong Kong.

Pegeric Late Picked Pinot Noir sweet style was also a winner again. Between them they won one gold, five silver and six bronze medals.

Greg from Romsey won second prize, Donna third and Renee from Diggers Rest won fourth.

The auxiliary congratulated all winners and the community for its support. All money raised goes towards purchasing equipment for the Romsey Ambulance Station.

Brothers to rep Victoria

The countdown is on to one of the district's time-honoured drawcards — horse racing at Hanging Rock on New Year's Day (Thursday, January 1).

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club has geared up for a big day, with gates to open at 11am.

For many, it will be a popular family picnic location to enjoy the first day of 2026.

The last race on the program is expected to be around 5pm.

Hanging Rock is one of the most iconic tracks in Victoria, with New Year's Day and Australia Day the two big days to enjoy there in January.

Parking is free.

On New Year's Day the team from Kelly Sports will provide a huge range of activities, which means adults can relax knowing the kids are in a supervised, safe and fun-filled environment.

Make sure you arrive early at 'The Rock' and obtain a free pack from the team at Kelly Sports.

The drawstring bag is filled with country racing merchandise, which includes an inflatable horse stick, colouring book, skipping rope, deck of cards, sticky ball set, sunglasses, novelty horse socks and water bottle.

Gisborne Brennan brothers Cooper, 12, and Oliver, 8, will represent Victoria.

Both boys have been selected for the Central Victorian State Team through the Australian Futsal Association and will have the support of Caroline Springs Resolve Finance franchise.

The sponsorship is led by local owner Adam Brink, and broker Jasmine Brennan, who is the sister of the sporting duo.

Jasmine’s parents are both team managers making this sponsorship truly a family affair.

"It means a lot to have my workplace cheering on my family," Jasmine said. "My brothers are so excited to represent Central Victoria and knowing Resolve is behind them makes it even more special."

The National Futsal Championships are Australia’s biggest and best club futsal event, bringing together more than 210 teams, 2000 players, and 4000 supporters from across the country.

For many participants, it’s a once-in-alifetime opportunity to represent their state, and potentially Australia in future international competitions.

The boys will head to Sydney in January to compete for the national title.

GOLF results CASTLEMAINE Plenty of action at the course on Saturday, with the popular Yellow Ball teams event run concurrently with a stableford attracting nearly 70 competitors.

While there's still a few yellow balls hiding in the rough, most returned to the clubhouse.

The team of Joel Maddern, Mick Josey, Jake Huntley and Damien Cassidy won with 37 points, three better than Robert Droney, Brian Harding, Marie Louise Fitzpatrick and John Fitzpatrick.

Julie Cross (35) stole the limelight with a brilliant 40 points to take individual overall and C-grade honours.

In A-grade the Bottomleys dominated, with Ross (6) the winner with 38 points, from Jeremy on 37.

A Fitzpatrick double occurred in Bgrade, with Marie Louise (18) scraping in with 39, on a countback from John (14).

NTPs went to Matthew O'Brien and Damien Gervasoni.

In the early 9@9 event, Mary Harris (21) continued on her winning way with 21 points, on a countback from Peter Gresswell.

Last Thursday 29 players took the early option to beat the heat.

Samuel Grimes (14) finished +3 to top A-grade on a countback from Ross Stevens (14), and Marie Louise Fitzpatrick (18) had a solid +2 in B-grade to finish one ahead of Owen Scott (29).

NTPs went to Will Dodson and the unlucky John Beet who found his tee shot just 10mm short of the hole.

GISBORNE Gary Hoffman's favourite competition, Gentsomes, was played on Saturday. The club also decided to embrace the festive season and hold the Barbecue Party Hole on the iconic 16th par 3.

Huge thanks to the volunteers — Wolf lady and hubby, Mick, Tony, Sharon, Patto, Laingers, Watcha Talking Bout Wills, and Jezza for their great work.

Members also dressed appropriately for the occasion, wearing Christmassy stuff, with Graham Paterson, Lisa Penny's husband, Vic Papp and Arthur Delavay impressing the crowd with their fashion choices.

The day's winning team with 104 points comprised Tommy Alkemade, Bryce Williamson, Dylan Tarczon and Jacob Chahine — all footy favourites.

Brendan Larkins captained a team of rising stars in Harry Larkins, Lee Jackson and Jack Shaw into second place on 103.

No-one cared who came third, even if it was Coates, Laing, Dean and Stevenson.

On Thursday, Tim Maddern continued his good form to take out the A-grade open with 42 points.

John Reptik won B-grade with 41, and Roger Hefner Gill came back from his mansion to take out the Bandits' grade with 36.

KYNETON It was the Tony Borg show last week, with the club's new vice-captain flexing his muscles to card two stableford rounds in the 40s.

It wasn't enough in the Wednesday stableford when Geoff Turner (17) racked up 43 points, being one over for the last five to card 80 off the stick.

Borg (29) was relegated to second with 40 points, scoring on every hole, with Gordon Stevens (19) third on 39.

Kylie Munro led the women with 38 points, and NTPs went to Turner (2), Munro, Col Hudgson, Michelle Werner and Namik Akkurt.

Borg stepped up again in the Midlands Irrigation stableford on Saturday with a winning 43 points in C-grade, three ahead of Trevor Glanfield (29).

Cam Hendy (11) made a comeback from a rotator cuff injury to claim A-grade with 40, two points ahead of Scott Murphy (9).

The Murphy clan had an impressive day out. New octogenarian Denise (19) also had 38 to finish runner-up for the women, and brother-in-law Barry (15) bagged 39 to take out B-grade by two from Thomas Beachey (13).

Rob MacRae (24) began strongly, and continued on for a whopping 42 points.

NTPs went to Hendy, Kot, Waters, Paul Miller and Tim Reid (also super pin).

In Thursday's nine-hole shootout Hudgson played the front nine in even par for 20 points to finish one clear of Neville Yates.

A Christmas Eve stableford is open to all, with a shotgun start at 10am. Register in person by 9.30am.

LANCEFIELD Both on and off the course, 2025 has been a very successful year for the club.

There's been a considerable increase in membership numbers, and many social groups have also discovered the course.

Steve Draper (19) won Saturday's Christmas Classic stableford with a superb 43 points, from Kaylene Cruise (27) 40 and Mark Balla (17) 39.

Thursday Fix: Stephan Kosa (33) 37 points, from James Whitford (14) and Dean

Budde (11) both 35.

Twilight (10 holes): Damian Choate made a triumphant return to the club with a winning 25 points.

MOUNT MACEDON Last Wednesday's Christmas Hamper stableford was played in summer conditions.

Jenny Svendsen (30) excelled to top B-grade with 40 points, two clear of Chris Martin (24).

Walrus Ward (13) topped A-grade with 38 points, from Karl Pongracic (19) on 36.

NTPs were Isaac Golden and Mike Smitheram.

TRENTHAM Sunny skies and super scores were plentiful on Saturday as 72 teed off in the mixed 4BBB stableford.

Combining firepower and finesse, the winners were Dan Johnson and Simon Carroll with 48 points. Nathaniel Slater and Peter Menz were hot on their heels.

In Thursday's stableford, Lisa Caines topped A-grade with 37 points, on a countback from Jenny Cotter.

Mary Halsted was in top form to take out B-grade with 41 points, one ahead of Joedy Wallis.

WOODEND Early fog cleared and 56 players had an enjoyable Saturday.

The best round by far came from Luke Schliga (14) who finished with a personal best 44 points, highlighted by an eagle on the 6th hole.

A-grade: Andrew Davies (1) 38 points, from Poppa Long (9); B — Schliga 44, from Ben Thompson (12) 40; C — Jen Hunter (25) 38, from Jade Nolan (20) 36.

Last Tuesday's Christmas stableford was played in festive spirit, and Paul Whelan (13) led the field home with 40 points. Dennis Barker (15) was runner-up on 38.

Trentham boilover!

Trentham caused one of upsets of the season in Highlands division one pennant bowls on Saturday afternoon.

Showing the fighting spirit similar to that which led to a Trentham football premiership this year, the bowlers managed to defeat second-placed Kyneton Golf by four shots.

The 55-51 result delighted Trentham players and supporters, paving the way for the pre-Christmas celebration at the clubhouse in the evening. Golf slid to fourth on the ladder with six rounds before the finals.

Kyneton Golf beat Trentham by 25 shots early in the season and was coming off a 20-shot winning effort against Woodend. Trentham had to bounce back after a 38-shot thumping at Romsey.

Added incentive was for Trentham to try and break out of the three-way battle

for relegation.

While tension was high over the last few ends, the Rod Justice and Bob Dobinson rinks had good wins, and Max Bruton hung on to restrict Golf's Toby Barker to a five-shot advantage.

This was not the only close 12th round match, as Diggers Rest fought hard to win by two shots at Lancefield in a thrilling finish, keeping its outside finals hopes alive.

Runaway ladder leader Kyneton did not get everything its own way at Woodend, with the overall margin being just seven shots. Norm Bickerdyke's four was the lone winner for the Woodsmen.

Romsey chased the maximum 16 points at home to Broadford, and finished up with 14 to move into second place on the ladder.

The battle-hardened quartet of Andy Macdonald, Garry Candy, Garry Templar and Damien Ely (s) won by the day's biggest

margin of 15 shots for the Redbacks, and Daryl Kelly snatched two points for the visitors.

Kilmore moved to third with a convincing 21-shot margin over Gisborne, the only side to defeat Kyneton this season.

A Crickety Christmas!

The first ever 'Crickety Christmas' took place at the Camp Reserve last Saturday evening, December 20.

The T20 showdown saw two superstar teams, one made up of Castlemaine United Cricket Club legends and an All Star Team, face off in a fast-paced clash.

The All Star team featured Aussie rock legend (and Taradale all-rounder) Tim Rogers, ex-AFL and current Castlemaine Football Club star Michael Hartley, dancing phenomenon Sas Cook from Movement Zone, MainFM star Alex Parsons, local paramedic and Muckleford cricketer Kaitlyn Hough, Bridge Hotel boss Pat Furze, the Run The Maine Bird (in costume!) aka Dr Richard Mayes, Barkers Creek CC, Melbourne Renegades and Essendon VFLW star Tia Davidge, Mayor Cr Toby Heydon, and MasterChef’s Beau Cook just to name a few.

The crowd enjoyed the cricket action, live entertainment and youngsters enjoyed a coaching clinic, face painting and a visit from the big man in red.

The All Star team finished on top and claimed bragging rights for 2025. No doubt United will be keen to bounced back in 2026!

Local talent on show at Country Cup

Last week Cricket Victoria’s talent pathway for boys and girls went into full swing.

The Country Cup for Girls aged Under 15 and boys Under 16 hosted

by Albury and Hamilton respectively showcased the best talent from the whole of Victoria Country.

Representing the Central Highlands region, some of our very own local players from the Macedon Ranges batted, bowled, kept and fielded, scoring runs, taking wickets.

At Albury, the Under 15 girls played five pool games winning three. In reflection the opening round one wicket loss to eventual winners Western Waves proved costly. Meg Brundell from Romsey scored 116 runs at an average of 23.2 to end the week in the best handful of batters while captain Holly Sullivan from Gisborne 48 runs and Grace Smith from Muckleford also performed well with the bat. Kyneton’s Quinn Barnett’s 18 mot out against Mallee Murray Sun combined with Smith to form an unbroken 25-run 7th wicket partnership to seal victory. Across the week the leading wicket takers were Sullivan with five, Lucinda Gray Woodend with four, while Skye Francis Gisborne, Lily Malone Macedon and Barnett all took three wickets. With the girls finishing third and eight players still eligible next year, the future looks bright for the Highlanders in 2026 / 2027.

The Under 16 boys played their week at Hamilton in Western Victoria but found the competition must more difficult. Across the five pool matches they were only able to get one victory however individually were more successful, Declan Barsher (Castlemaine United) and Luke Cameron (Macedon ) topped the runs scores with 321 runs and 220 runs across the pool matches. Brasher and Jay Leong (Gisborne) both took four wickets for the week.

The Country Cup competition forms part of the selection process for the Victoria Country program for season 2026 / 2027 with will most certainly include a number of Macedon Ranges players.

Tylden local returns a champion

Fourteen-year-old Lucinda Bowen has returned from Europe after representing Australian U15s Women’s Futsal Team in multiple tournaments against other countries.

The Tylden local spoke to the Express on the day she left for the tour, in October, and said she was nervous about going because she had only been overseas once before, on a family trip to Bali. This time she was alone.

“I’m pretty excited, but also nervous because I’m going to be away from my family and [not] talking to them about how I feel,” she told the Express in October.

In Europe, Lucinda not only donned the green and gold, but was chosen as captain to lead the Australian team, who saw success. "[When] we played our third tournament, [we] played it against these really tough teams [from] Wales," she said.

It was a mixed tournament and she said they had to play against "Wales boys", but the girls won the game, 2-1.

She added, "When we played in the finals against the girls we beat them 5-0".

Lucinda scored a hattrick in that game and has since returned home with two trophies and a medal. She was given the MVP award, and Golden Boot award for netting 30 goals across the tournaments.

Her father, Jacent Bowen, said he was proud of Lucinda, and that she was back to her normal routine.

"She's working really hard. She has training tonight," Jacent said.

Taking a stand against drink driving

Hanging Rock Cricket Club is proud to have joined the Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s Good Sports Game Ready Round, a national road safety initiative helping community sporting clubs take a stand against drink driving.

The club hosted their Game Ready Round on Saturday December 13 at Hanging Rock Reserve, where they promoted road safety messages, shared facts around alcohol and driving, and encouraged members and spectators to make safe choices behind the wheel. The Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s chief executive officer, Dr Erin Lalor, said the Game Ready Round empowered clubs to lead change in their communities.

“Game Ready Round is about more than just raising awareness – it’s an opportunity for clubs to lead by example, challenge unsafe attitudes and behaviours, and create better environments for their members,” Dr Lalor said.

Hanging Rock Cricket Club’s secretary, Nick Maxwell, said the Round reinforced the importance of keeping each other safe and working together as a community to reduce road trauma.

“The effects of road trauma are far-reaching, with alcohol contributing to so many lives lost or changed forever. The Game Ready Round is a simple but powerful way for us to take action,” Mr Maxwell said.

“We’re proud to support road safety beyond the Round, with ongoing efforts like planning ahead for safe travel, encouraging designated drivers – ensuring everyone gets home safely after club events, providing a variety of non-alcoholic options, and building a culture where looking out for one another is the norm, as part of the Good Sports program.”

Daisy Pearce, AFLW senior coach of the West Coast Eagles and Good Sports Game Ready Round Ambassador is helping raise awareness of the initiative and inspire action.

"Drink driving causes a third of fatal crashes in Australia, and one life lost on our roads is too many. By taking part in the round, clubs can send a clear message that road safety matters. Together, we have the power to save lives."

Christmas Carnival series returns

The Castlemaine, Bendigo and Shepparton Cycling Clubs will once again be teaming up to hold their three-day Christmas Carnival Series this December 27-29.

Special feature events across the series will include the: – 2025 AusCycling Masters Scratch State Championships – Victoria – Ken Maddern Snr Memorial (Women) – Ken Maddern Snr Memorial (Elite Men) – Ken Maddern Snr Memorial (Masters Men) – Jonathon Kuhle Memorial (U15) The carnival is rolling into Castlemaine on December 27 at Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve, and CCC need some superstar crew to help make the day run smoothly!

Locals excel Meanwhile in local cycling news Castlemaine cyclists endured a hot, fast, and a very sweaty night of racing at Bendigo last Friday night.

Chloe Jackson took on Bendigo for the first time last night and picked up three race wins – not a bad way to introduce yourself. Her proud mum Emma Jackson and fellow Bendigo and District Cycling Club and Castlemaine Cycling Club rider Toni Abbisongi also excelled!

Shock and dismay at RDFNL Angela Crawford

Local MP Mary-Anne Thomas has expressed her "genuine shock and real disappointment" in the Riddell District Football Netball League for blocking the Kyneton Women's Football Club from playing in season 2026.

The MP has written to league CEO Jordan Doyle stating she was "disappointed and confused by the actions of the league" in appealing against the KWFC's acceptance to the Central Victoria Football League, despite the RDFNL having rejected the women itself. AFL Victoria upheld the league's appeal, leaving KWFC unable to join the competition.

"It was with genuine shock and real disappointment that I became aware of the subsequent intervention by the RDFNL in this process, particularly given that the arrangement concerned a league outside of the RDFNL's jurisdiction," Ms Thomas said.

"The outcome of this intervention has regrettably left the Kyneton women's team

back at square one, undoing progress that had been achieved in good faith.

"The reasons for the RDFNL's intervention in this process remain unclear.

"The ongoing consequences of these actions now place the participation of the Kyneton Wedgies women's team in 2026 in serious doubt.

"At a time when we should be working collectively to strengthen and grow women's and girls' participation in sport, the situation represents a troubling setback.

"I am disappointed and confused by the action taken by the RDFNL in this matter. It is difficult to reconcile with your stated objectives of supporting participation, fairness, and growing women's sport locally."

CONTROVERSY SWELLS The MP's admonishment of the RDFNL comes as controversy swells over alleged comments made by the president of the league, Brenton Knott, in relation to the women's team.

The Midland Express has viewed a message sent by Mr Knott to an online sup-

porter of the Kyneton women.

It read: "You need to look at the other side. They don't deserve anything – you're advocating that any team that's not happy breaks away?? How is that manageable by AFL? If you look at the principals (sic) in this – it's not about footy, it's about grooming and gender weirdness. You follow local footy, so you need to see AFL Vic and RDFNL aren't the bad ones here".

Members and supporters of the Kyneton women's club have responded with shock.

Leticia Hayes, whose 16-year-old daughter has trained with the women since she was 13 years old, said she'd never felt that her daughter had been unsafe in their company.

"She's always felt supported," Ms Hayes said.

"This (the league president) is someone who is in charge of a community sporting organisation and he holds these views.

"They need to be held to account and the whole board needs a review if this is coming from the top."

Gisborne remains put

The Gisborne Football Club will again compete in the Bendigo league next season after a failed campaign to join the Ballarat league for the 2026 season.

GFNC president Tony Brancatisano told another publication last week that the club remained with the Bendigo league due to pressures from AFL Victoria.

“Ballarat had to get its fixture out and AFL Vic has been hammering them not to let us in next year,” he said.

“They were under a lot of pressure and had to make a call.

“We’ve just got to play the season out next year.

“Hopefully we can win the senior footy flag and have a big crack at the senior netball, and then do what we’ve got to do and get out.”

Earlier this year, the Bendigo league appealed Gisborne’s decision to exit their league and it was upheld by AFL Victoria.

The Bendigo league's 2026 fixture has since been released and Gisborne will face off against Kangaroo Flat, at home.

The Bendigo league will meet in January for an annual meeting, and up to five new board members could be elected. The Gisborne Football Club may make another attempt at this conference to put forth their intentions of leaving.

KWFC also responded with a statement condemning the league president's accusation.

"Kyneton Women’s Football Club is deeply disturbed by a message that is now public, attributed to RDFNL president Brenton Knott, which uses harmful and offensive language in relation to gender diversity and inclusion in football," the club said.

"When senior officials rely on rhetoric that falsely links inclusion with risk, it undermines trust, safety and confidence in the systems designed to protect participants.

"While KWFC will be seeking legal advice in relation to this matter, we believe it is important to publicly call out conduct and rhetoric that undermines inclusion, mischaracterises our members, or damages confidence in our club.

"KWFC will be submitting the content we have received to AFL integrity.

"We call on AFL Victoria to review this matter immediately."

The RDFNL was unable to respond to a request for comment before our publishing deadline yesterday morning.

MAIN Game on for 2026
