Over the recent Easter weekend –Victoria'scoldest for 80 years –four emergency services personnel from the Macedon Ranges embarked on athree-day,two-night ascent of the state'shighest peak, Mount Bogong.
The hike was organised by 'First Responders Trek for Health', anot-for-profit organisation focusing on the physical and mental wellbeing of emergency services personnel, which was formed in late 2019 by members of the Woodend SES Unit.
Founding member Kevin Mcnair said the group facilitated participation in outdoor activities to increase and
maintain physical fitness and contribute to the improvement of robust mental health.
"Currently we primarily use hiking, but we will be introducing walking and the use of assisted mobility devices next year when the organisation is in aposition to do so. This is an all-inclusive program," Kevin said.
"Participants have the opportunity to connect with people from various backgrounds and form positive relationships.
"They build asense of belonging and self-worth and provide and receive support, and share their positive

experiences with others.
"As well as discovering the unbounded beauty and serenity of our country and the wilderness."
Joining Kevin on this latest hike were members of the SES, police and Ambulance Victoria –Matt, David and Dayne.
"Wewould be joined on the first night by ayoung solo hiker named Marcus, an outstanding young man who decided to join our quest, and so we became five," Kevin said.

‘Satellite city’ approved
It'sbeen dubbed a"reincarnation" of a past failure, now "a satellite city", but arevised development plan for Harpers Lane is expected to progress.
Last week, Macedon Ranges Shire councillors voted 5-3 to approve a65-lot residential development with extensive conditions for the 24-hectare Kyneton South site.
VCATand council rejected the initial 87-lot subdivision for the site, which had strong community opposition.
The VCATmember said lot size and density were not contextually responsive to the features of the site, including its topography and its rural character context.
Discussing revised plans last week, Cr Janet Pearce said an in-depth report showed careful consideration by planning officers.
New plans show 23 lots would be greater than 3000m in size, with the remaining 42 lots proposed to be between 2000m and 3000m in size.
Cr Pearce said there had been alot comparison made to the nearby Tilwinda Views with larger lot sizes. She said Tilwinda began development in 2003 and requirements had changed since that time.
"This has been zoned low-density residential for at least 20 years. We know
that it was initially a4000m2 minimum lot size subdivision but, whether we like it or not, this was changed by the minister back in 2007 and we must work to the current policy.Thatisa minimum of 2000m2 is allowed because of the sewerage connection," she said.
"Although many people may have hoped for larger lot sizes for this application, if you consider the past VCAT decision and the current planning scheme conditions for the zone, that is what we must work with and Ibelieve the officers have worked very hard to do that."
Cr Pearce highlighted important conditions including the reduction of lots, placement of larger lots around the perimeter, an extra retarding basin, reduced cut and fill, changes to building envelopes, height restrictions and footpaths.
Cr Annette Death agreed there were clear VCATrecommendations that planning officers had built into the extensive conditions.
"I think there are very strong planning grounds that this application should proceed," she said.
However, not all were convinced the application hit the mark, including some neighbouring objectors.
Cr Jennifer Anderson argued not
enough had changed to make the plan fit with its surrounds. "What VCATwas looking for was more space around this new development so that it didn't stand out starkly in that open rural landscape," she said.
"They wanted it to have abetter relationship with the surrounding rural zones of the Rural Living Zone and Farm Zone. In my opinion, Idon't think it responds enough.
"I still feel this is an overdevelopment of the site. This is achallenging location but, for me, it'sreally important that we keep that rural character and landscape."
Cr Anne Moore also felt the proposal didn't fit with its surrounds. Shewanted to see the plans reduced by afurther 15-20 lots.
"I can't support this little satellite city sitting amongst Rural Living and Farming Zone," she said.
When it came to the vote, adivision recorded those in favour of the development'sapproval were Crs Death, West, Bonanno,Pearce and Neil. Those against were Crs Anderson, Moore andGuthrie. Cr Mark Ridgeway did notenter debate/ vote dueto aconflict of interest.
The applicant has the right to appeal the conditions and decision at VCAT.

Mozart’sRequiem at Macedon
Local music lovers can look forward to the performance of the celebrated Mozart Requiem by the highly acclaimed Australian Chamber Choir directed by Douglas Lawrence at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon on Saturday May 20 at 3pm.
The performance will showcase talented young soprano Elspeth Bawden, now aresident of Kyneton.
Adistinctive feature of this performance will be the inclusion of two basset horns (the only two in Victoria). Arelatively new instrument in Mozart’s lifetime, the basset horn held much appeal for him, featuring also in operas and works for basset horn ensemble. Its presence is keenly felt in the opening bars of the Requiem, where it contributes to a haunting and emotionally charged entrée into the work. The basset horn is not unlike the clarinet, but with agreater extensive lower range and aunique sound.
The Requiem was Mozart’s last composition and was far from complete on his death in December 1791. Knowledge pertaining to the compositional and early performance history of the work abounds with uncertainties and some remarkable facts. For example, the patron, Count von Walsegg, who had commissioned the Requiem, had the work performed as part of amemorial service for his late wife in Vienna in December 1793. On this occasion the score bore his name 'Fr. C(omte) de Wallsegg' as the composer!
The program also features the much-loved Ave verum corpus, also composed by the terminally ill Mozart in 1791.

Dreamtime stories to launchatBuda
Jade Jungwirth
Launching tomorrow at Buda Castlemaine, Mooie's Stories is anew and beautifully illustrated children's book of Djarra Country Dreamtime (Malamiyayu Gurang) stories written and illustrated by Aunty Ros Dodson.
Aunty Ros is adescendant of the Dja Dja Wurrung peoples of Victoria. She grew up on Djarra Country in Campbells Creek, the youngest of 14 children, she was known to her family as Whela (possum). Upon having her own children she became known as BurWela (mother possum).
The four stories (kiki) told in the book are stories that BurWhela grew up listening to. Stories told to her by her mother,Mooie, who had heard them from her mother, who heard them from her mother before and her mother before that. They are Dja Dja Wurrung Ancestors' stories about how Wabbee, the freshwater crayfish, get its bright red spots? Why does Wehla, the ringtail possum, have acurly tail? How were Waripi Yaluk, the backwaters of Bulatjal Yaluk Woodlar, the Loddon River, formed? Why does Yern, the moon, light up the night sky? Bunjil, the all-powerful, knows the answers.
BurWhela’swords and images bring to vivid life these stories of her Ngurar Gurrk, her Ancestors, from Djandak, the Country of the Loddon River of central Victoria.
"These are stories that have influenced and taught me and in turn, Ihave taught them to my grandchildren. Writing this book is away to honour my mother and our ancestors, the females and matriarchs," BurWela said.
"My mother would be extremely proud to have these stories told. She lived in extremely challenging times. She had 14 children and she worked to help sustain us. She was always sharing culture through storytelling, going to the grandkids' schools whenever possible.
"Our storytelling teaches how to live in harmony, how to care for and preserve the land and all living on it. It is lore for living."
Mooie's Stories, published by Aboriginal Studies Press, will launch on Wednesday May 17 from 4.30pm-6pm at The Buda Garden Room 42 Hunter Street Castlemaine RSVP by scanning the QR code or purchase Mooie'sStories at shop.aiatsis. gov.au/products/mooies-stories

Finding peace in wilderness
From page 1.
"This trek was amulti-purpose event to test the feasibility of an extended time in the wilderness under challenging conditions with potentially one or more members with fatigue and or PTSD.
"Over those three days and two nights the mountain certainly delivered avariety of elements to the exercise, rain, gale force winds, ice, snow, subzero temperatures and leeches.
"It was aresounding success with avery positive outcome."
This November the group will undertake its most comprehensive exercise to date –a 92-kilometre trek with agroup of six to eight participants. The groups are kept small to maintain the integrity and preservation of national parks.
"Wewill be trekking the South Coast Track Tasmania, aworld-heritage protected area and one of the great wilderness treks in the world," Kevin said.
"It'svirtually untouched and pristine, it incorporates native forest, two mountain ranges, expansive button grass plains, boggy moors, river crossings and coastal areas.
"Wewill fly into aremote airfield at Melaleuca and finish at Cockle Creek, aworthy challenge on anumber of levels.
"I would like to personally thank everyone who has shown an interest and belief in what we are doing as well as the hiking groups."

Savings on cheaper fares
The state'sregional fare cap has seen V/Line travellers save more than $4 million since it was introduced on March 31.
More than 1.5 million people used public transport across regional Victoria in the first month of the new fairer fares, including more than 210,000 passengers on Bendigo line. V/Line patronage data shows more passengers are taking advantage of cheaper fares to travel to and from major events like the Grand Prix and AFL matches, as well as tourism destinations across Victoria, with an uplift in patronage on weekend and special services. Daily fares are now capped at the current metropolitan fare of $9.20 or $4.60 concession, while on weekends or public holidays, fares are capped at $6.70 for afull fare of $3.35 for concession per day

Growth area plan forGisborne
Aproposal for anew commercial development at Gisborne include asmall supermarket, a medical centre, office and two cafés, along with 57 car parking spaces.
The application seeks to rezone vacant residential land at 101-105 Willowbank Road to acommercial zone to provide services for agrowth area.
Macedon Ranges Shire Council earmarked the area for such adevelopment back in 2009 and is now seeking community feedback on the combined planning scheme amendment and planning application.

Benetasplans progress
Amy Hume
Plans for aBenetas retirement village in Gisborne will progress forland earmarked for afuture hospital.
The three-storey facility is proposed for the corner of Neal, Robertson and Hamilton streets nearby services at the town'scentre.
Last week Macedon Ranges Shire councillors were forced to weigh up the likelihood of ahospital forthe site, demand for aged care andthe appropriateness of the development. Pushingfor the plans to be released for communityfeedback, Cr Dominic Bonanno said the proposal was "welcomed and much-needed".
"Gisborne has acritical shortage of residential aged-care accommodation," he said.
"Thecovenant, created in the 1980s, currently restricts theland to be used for the purposes of only ahospital, nursing home or similar use, butthings havechanged since then. Gisborne is notgetting ahospital in the foreseeable future.
"In my opinion, having an integratedretirement village and aged-care facility close to healthcarefacilities in town is the next best thing."
Cr Bonanno said the developmentwas expected to cost$30 million and also bring an additional $30M in jobs and boosts to the economy through local spend.
Cr JanetPearce agreedthe reality of Gisborne getting ahospital was "very unlikely".
"Wealreadyhave ahospital in the shire and thereare many other areaswith huge
growth that arefacingchallenges in getting hospitals," she said.
"The main issue hereisthat we know the projected growth for ourseniors and for this stage in population havingthis option with these services co-locatedwould be of benefit."
Crs GeoffNeil, Bill West and Mark Ridgeway also spoke in favour of putting the plan out to the community for feedback, inline with planning officerrecommendation.
Whilecouncillors understood benefits of the proposaland thepressing need for such aservice, somestill held reservations.
Cr Rob Guthrie held strong concerns aboutoverdevelopmentofthe site, neighbourhood character, and functionality for purpose as athree-storey build.
"It is just too bulky andanoverdevelopment of aconstrained site. What Isuggest is relocating it to asuitably sized siteto accommodate what theapplicant wants," he said.
Cr Anderson acknowledged thesomeof the benefits of such aservice but echoed Cr Guthrie's concernsaboutoverdevelopment of the site
"Looking at this now,Ifeel it'sprobably an overdevelopment but, certainly,Iwill keep an openmind to listen to community members and anyfeedback we get," shesaid.
Themotionpassed in a6-3 vote. Those to vote against the motion were CrsAnderson, Guthrieand Moore.
Documents will now be prepared for exhibition and community feedback sought for stage three of a10-stage process.
MRSC'sdirector of planning andenvironment, Rebecca Stockfeld, said the proposed development would prioritise active transport such as walking and cycling. She said this would enable residents to more easily access basic shopping needs and reduce car dependency
“A commercial offering has been along-term strategic vision
for this area,” Ms Stockfeld said. “Having localised options will help service the needs of the growing population, complementing what Gisborne’stown centre currently provides.”
Existing services in the area include physiotherapy and osteopathy clinics and an early learning centre.
Sustainable features within the application include onsite power generation throughrooftop solar, use of recycled materials, storm water capture and retention, and an electric vehicle charging station.
Plans for the proposal can be viewed online at: mrsc.vic.gov.au/ your-say or in-person at MRSC’s Gisborne and Kyneton service centres. Submissions close on June 13.
MRSC will consider all submissions received and appoint an independent Planning Panel if necessary, with afinal decision regarding the amendment to be made by the Minister for Planning.

Number of fines ‘disappointing’
Macedon Ranges Shire Council issued 898 infringements across Macedon and Mount Macedon during the busiest Autumn Festival yet.
This year's event attracted an unprecedented number of tourists to Honour Avenue and residents have described it as the most "chaotic" year for traffic and crowds.
MRSC's director of planning and environment, Rebecca Stockfeld, said the volume of infringements issued to people not obeying local laws was disappointing.
“Issuing such alarge number of fines –most of which relate to parking infringements –is disappointing and frustrating for our local laws officers," she said.
"The signs are clear and are there to best manage the mix of visitation, our residents and pedestrian safety.”
Local laws officers issued the fines between April 1and April 30 with the majority (85 per cent) for people stopping in anostopping area.
Other common infringements included parking not facing direction of travel (37), stopping within 10 metres of an intersection (33) and parking for aperiod longer than indicated (22).
While April was asignificant period due to the Autumn Festival, council’s local laws officers have continued to monitor the Macedon area to ensure compliance with parking and other laws.
Peer supportfor carers
Carers are people who have unique needs as they selflessly help others with their dayto-day living. This includes caring for people who have adisability,a medical condition or chronic illness, mental illness such as dementia, children with special needs or those who are frail or aged.
According to Deloitte Access Economics, the need for carers is at an all-time high with
one out of every eight Australians providing informal care.
Trentham Lions Club has launched the 'Cool Country Carers' program to provide a network and peer support to carers in Trentham and district area.
"Werecognise the enormous commitment the role of acarer canbe," Trentham Lions president Gita Khatri said.
"This group gives you opportunities to meet with other carers and share your experience, enjoy the company of others, catch up for coffee and chat without any expectation and know that you are notalone."
The group'sfirst coffee morning is at Trentham General café, 37A High Street, Trentham, on May 19 at 10.30am.

When someone mentions the word gym, the image of sweaty, muscular men, pumping iron while watching themselves on awall of mirrors, immediately springs to mind.
So it'sawelcome surprise to walk into Real Strength Studio in Castlemaine and be greeted with the smiling faces of an enthusiastic group of women in their later years of life.
Jayne Mayes, the eldest in the group at 82 years young, has been part of the Never TooLate program since its inception in 2019. Being the powerhouse that she is, Jayne is able to squat 40kg, bench press 30kg and can deadlift an incredible 60kg all while looking fabulous and having fun with awonderful group of women!
"I have found new and lovely friends to
share experiences and laughter," Jayne said.
"I love the ambience that exists in the gym.... My favourite things are the lovely friends Ihavemade along the way and the fun and happiness it brings. Plus it has given me the confidence to challenge myself."
The older men and women in the program say joining the gym has built their confidence, self esteem and they have made some wonderful friendships along the way. Some of the members have came to the program through their GP's recommendation or have recently recovered from surgery. They have noticed a big difference in their overall strength, bone density, increased flexibility and have reported having better mental health through regularly working out.
Dave Gittus, one of the Never Too
Late regulars, said that before joining the program, his strength and fitness were "pretty ordinary". "I was quite unfit for my age and needed to rebuild," Dave said.
"Since joining, Ifeel alot of pride in my progress (however slow!). The knowledge that Ican continue to improve is very important, and the great friendly atmosphere Ilook forward to.
"There is no pressure, which means I work at apace that feels safe. Ienjoy the music too!"
Real Strength owner Daniel Pollard is passionate about making the gym accessible to people of all ages.
Through the Never TooLate program, people who couldn't get up from asitting position or struggled to hold the weight of abroomstick have been able to lift incredible weights –holding their own against the much younger members.
Daniel, who started his own strength journey at the age of 13, got his mum Therese into powerlifting and after along career as anurse, she is now working as one of the coaches at Real Strength.
Daniel told the Express that often the people who needed the gym most were the ones who weren't going to mainstream gyms with mirrors and complex equipment.
"Here we do exercises that are basic and everyday movements that make you strong. And there'snot amirror in sight," Daniel said.
Real Strength is opening up spaces for new members to join the Never TooLate program in early June 2023. Information sessions will be held at The Real Strength Studio in The Mill Complex on Wednesdays May 24 and 31 at 10.30am.

The inaugural 'Sensory Sanctuary' arts festival (June 24-July 7) is the brainchild of local resident Louise ‘Rockabilby’ Cooper and is thought to be the first event of its kind in regional Victoria.
Louise was diagnosed with autism six months ago and her two children are also autistic.
"My diagnosis has completely changed my life direction," Louise said.
"I am aprofessional artist but now I am studying for aGraduate Certificate in Autism and Iamdetermined to make a difference for the community
"Since my diagnosis, Ihave unearthed some pretty confronting statistics.
"New research suggests as many as one in 33 people are autistic and the unemployment rate for autistic people in Australia is 31.8 per cent –which is three times the rate of people with disability, and almost six times the rate of people without disability
"And most startling, that people with autism have asignificantly shorter life expectancy," she said.
At 35, Louise is determined to use the time she has left to make apositive difference for those who are neurodiverse
in our community and to create abrighter future for our children.
She has founded anot-for-profit and the 'Sensory Sanctuary' festival was born.
"Weare planning to host 102 events for children, youth, adults, sensory avoiders and sensory seekers during the upcoming school holidays at the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and The Goods Shed," she said.
"Some of the events we will be hosting range from 'Rainbow Nature Walk' for Under 7s and Sensory Sticks led by local support worker Sam Rowe, aNeurodivergent Pride Lantern Parade and All Ages Glow Disco.
"Wehave anumber of artists and therapists coming to the region to run a myriad of workshops on everything from LEGO therapy and watercolour painting to creative therapies.
"Wewill also have some very helpful sessions for teachers on ways to support those who are neurodiverse, with Natasha Siryj from Practice Inclusion and Andrea Broughton from Early Childhood Outreach presenting professional development workshops.
"Melanie Martinelli of The Little Black Duck will also be visiting us from New South Wales to speak about Autistic Play, what it is and how we can support it.
"Wereallyencourage members of the wider community to come along. We want to buildmore awareness and encourage community building and inclusion."
Louise'syoungest son Lockie, 6, said he was looking forward to being part of
the 'Minecraft Workshop' and her eldest Angus, 17, will participate in areading of an interactive sensory play the pair are developing. Angus is also looking forward to the skill development and creative writing workshops.
"Wewill also have achai tent and a coffee cart where parents can mingle and chat," Louise said.
The festival aims to support neurodivergent creatives with 70 per cent of workshop facilitators neurodivergent.
Funds raised from the festival will be used to create mobile 'Sensory Sanctuaries', which can be hired for community events and festivals similar to the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group'sWash Against Waste trailer and provide aplace of sanctuary where people who are neurodiverse or thosewho suffer other conditions such as anxiety can retreat and reset.
"The sanctuaries would be supported by trained professionals and aim to make community events more accessible for all," Louise said.
The festival will kick offwith an opening night celebration, the 'Psycho Social Masquerade' at The GoodsShed on Saturday June 24 with an Acknowledgement of Country by Wiradjuri artist Keira Long and aperformance by local neurospicy songbird, Sarah Hancock.
Festival goers may be eligible to utilise their NDIS funding to attend their chosen events.

An immersive audio experience
Kyneton-based theatre company Threshold is preparing to launch anew audio theatre experience: The Flying Canoe.
The immersive experience features traditional songs and dancing that was recorded at the Kiribati Cultural Day held at Kyneton'sSocial Foundry last year.Itinvites families to transform their lounge rooms into aworld of myths and wonder
Set on the fictional island of Neiko, this magical story has been created by Baynton resident and Australian / Kiribati writer Marita Davies and features the voices of her mother,Teaote Davies and daughter Matari McKenna.
"For this story,Neiko represents Marakei –my grandmother’sisland, also known as the women's
island with four female spirits protecting its four points," Marita said.
"As descendants of the island of Marakei, it’sbeen so special to have Mum and Matari involved. By telling our stories, we are sharing and continuing our culture."
The recordings from the cultural day formed the basis of the musical soundscape of The Flying Canoe
Local composer and sound designer Zoë Barry, together with Emma Bortignon, wove these songs and dances together to create an immersive sonic world, which drops families straight into Kiribati daily life.
"Through Marita'stelling of The Flying Canoe, weget agreater sense of what each of us is carrying forward as agift from our ancestors, and how we might take the time
to show gratitude at each stopalong the way," said Tahli Corin, Threshold’sco-director.
“When the Macedon Ranges community came together that day in May,12months ago, there was such an electric energy as we all danced and sang together, led by members of the Kiribati community. The energy of the community is so present in the final work –and we’re really looking forward to sharing it with them!”
The Flying Canoe is an at-home experience for families, allowing them to explore the richnessof Kiribati culture from the comfort of their own homes.
Ideal for families who love adventure and culture, and suitable for families with children ages four and up, it can be found online at: thethreshold.com.au/the-flying-canoe

Keeping ahealthy weight
Maintaining your pet’sweight can seem alittle more challenging during the colder months, but keeping ahealthy weight can also reduce the risk of injury and disease in the future.
For weight loss, it’snosurprise that it’snot aone-size-fits-all remedy, but speaking to your veterinarian can help you adjust your pet to alifestyle and diet that is most suitable for both the pet and the supporting family
Afull health assessment can determine any underlying causes for pets slowing down or becoming less active, and any concerns will be addressed to make them comfortable so they can get back to amore active lifestyle.
Weight loss and maintaining ahealthy weight is afamily commitment.Ifone person is designated to providing the ongoing diet plan, this also means that other family members need to resist providing the extra treats. There is more than one way to show your pet that you love them, like belly rubs, walking and playing together with toys.
Setting the goal of weight loss and trying to maintain ahealthy weight will help lower their risk of certain health problems like arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, breathing problems, back problems, and kidney disease. It also can reduce your pet'srisk of joint injuries associated with excess weight.
If you would like to discuss weight management for your pet, contact Gisborne Veterinary Clinic to schedule an appointment.

Pet of the Month
Rozzie rulesthe roost
Cats rule –that'sa statementnot aquestion as one die-hard Riddell Footy Club fan can attest to.
Now living in Queensland, this footy fan decided that he and his wife should adopt a cat, and that they did seven weeks ago.
In that time this tabby and white puss named Rozzie, has come to rule the household. She can open sliding doors and windows if they are not latched and escape to her heart'scontent to wander the garden until she is so hungry 24 hours later she returns though the sliding door begging for food! She hates the dog who lives with her –competition for attention –and is probably working on shoving her out the sliding door for good.
Rozzie is massively playful and scales everything in the house. So much so that she
has been allotted a'calm room' where she is put to spend time to settle down. But this cat'splans have worked! She is given the best of the best food, tickles, cuddles, play things and afive-storey climbing tower complete with retreat cubes and hammocks to keep her happy being an indoor cat. And for being an entertaining girl with attitude, Rozzie is our Pet of the Month.
*Interestingly, only athird of cat owners also have adog. This might suggest that those with cats will seek out dogs that are compatible, whereas some owners of dogs that aren’t compatible with cats simply can’t add them to their household.
*While males and females responded as having the same rates of dog ownership, females were slightly more likely to own acat.
*Bya cat’swhisker,Australians responded as slightly preferring shelters as their means of getting apet. However, dog owners tend to greatly prefer going through abreeder, with almost half of dog owners indicating their eldest pet came from a breeder.Almost 60 per cent of cat owners, however, responded as acquiring their pet through either ashelter, oradoption program.
*Younger Australians (44 and under) also prefer going through abreeder, whereas Australians aged 45 or over were more likely to respond as going through a shelter.Adoption was also most common among those aged above 65 years of age.
*Females tend to be more likely to be given apet than males, whereas males were more likely than females to get their pet from abreeder

Inter-library borrowing is back
Inter-library loans have returned to the Goldfields Library service last week.
The much-valued service that allows borrowing and delivery of material from libraries across the state was suspended last October
The contract with the public library system’scourier company expired last year and Public Libraries Victoria was forced to suspend the service to find a cost-effective solution.
Macedon Ranges Libraries notified users of the inter-library service return on May 8via social media.
"Wehave been working with Public Libraries Victoria to balance the rising costs of logistics, couriers and other operational services with retaining access for members to the wide network of items we collectively hold," it said.
The service allows local library users to request items that unavailable through their own Goldfields Libraries collection for asmall cost. For example, borrowing an item from the Ballarat or even the State Library Inter-library loans differ from the Goldfields Libraries floating collection, which moves from branch to branch at no cost to the borrower
For more information on inter-library loans is available online at: ncgrl.vic.gov.au
Soothing harp music brought anew calmness to Lancefield animal sanctuary Edgar’sMission earlier this month.
Sixteen International Harp Therapy students and graduates visited the sanctuary for an experiential training day with the rescued animal residents.
“Animals have aphysical and psychological sensibility, which allows them –inthe same way as humans –toexperience pain and pleasure,” said Christina Tourin, apioneer in therapeutic music and founder of the International Harp Therapy Program.
“Research shows that music can affect an animal’smood in much the same way it affects us. When animals hear classical music, it has a soothing effect and they become relaxed.”
With hundreds of formerly farmed animals residing at Edgar’sMission, many have suffered from past trauma.
“Harp therapy has proven time and again to soothe new arrivals to the sanctuary,” founder Pam Ahern said. “Some transformations are immediate, while others are slow and at the animal'space.”
Harp therapy hits the rightnote
Edgar’sMission’sresident therapeutic harpist, Vimukti Warr, has been volunteering for more than four years
“Vimukti goes to great lengths to connect with the animals and plays music appropriate to their needs to bridge the gap between usand them,” Pam said. “Ithas been agreat delight to see this compassion in action.”
Vimukti was instrumentalinputting together this international event for harpists.
“It was aunique opportunity indeed,” Vimukti shared.
“As therapeutic harpists, whether we are working with humans or animals, the fundamentals of what we apply are similar "Welook to use inclusive attention to find the right tempo, rhythm and resonant tone of the individual.
"Weare always observing and playing to support and hold them in a cradle of sound, creating their very own personal therapeutic harp experience.”
The experiential day helped students and graduates to become more confident to work with animals and humans alike.

TODAY’S CROSSWORD
YourOPINIONS @
Disappointed butnot surprised Russell SMowatt, president,Calder Action GroupInc
TheCalder Action Group Inc is bitterly disappointed but not surprised by the federal government’s2023/24 Budget allocation for the Calder Park Dr/Calder Freeway Interchange Big Build Project.
In essence it has been adiddly-squat announcement.
The Calder Freeway is aRoad of National Importance, but in this instance it’s not, when budget time comes around from the federal government.
The government is not up to speed (to excuse apun) for providing consistent funding for the Calder Freeway in the ever-growing Brimbank, Melton, Sunbury and Gisborne areas and beyond whose residents use it on adaily basis.
We can now only look forward to the State Budget announcement, which will follow, inadvancing this long-overdue Calder Park Dr /Calder Freeway Interchange.
Representativegovernment
Hans Paas,Castlemaine
John Power's flight of fancy as the 'Benevolent dictator' (Opinions, May 9) may have the odd sound proposal in it, but for my money Iprefer the tried and true system of representative government in a democracy. This allows proposals such as John'stobedebated, modified, approved or defeated.
Perhaps John should be careful what he wishes for as many dictatorships are moderated by judicious assassinations.
Democracy allows for non-violent changes of government like we had just on ayear ago. That outcome is always much better for our health.
Afailureof representation
Ruth Williams, Chris Kakris and Annalisa Clark, for Friends of Kyneton South
Five MRSC councillors voted in favour of the motion that Cr Janet Pearce put last Wednesday night that apermit be issued for the developer’sre-proposal for asubdivision at 85 Harpers Lane, South Kyneton.
Unfortunately, the motion was carried on a5-3 vote.
Crs Anderson, Guthrie and Moore were impressive. They voted no, and had clearly put in the time and effort to understand the resource truly at stake. We appreciate them. We thank them.
The other councillors, not so much.
Residents' interests must be represented when important decisions are put to a vote, not those of anout-of-town developer seeking to maximise his profit, and shed costs to the community as much as he can.
What we witnessed onWednesday night was afailure of representation.
How could these councillors not understand that the same circumstances applied to the Riddells Creek Precinct Structure Plan (officers recommended approval of arevised plan)? Councillors didn’t accept that and voted unanimously to reject the proposal in line with community objections.
Despite assurances that the council would uphold the spirit of the VCATrulings regarding 85 Harpers Lane, Wednesday's decision will result in an overdeveloped, out-of-character,landscape-destroying mini-Gisborne.
Let’snot forget the developer never once sought to engage with the community or attempt to develop sympathetically to the landscape and neighbourhood.
And let'snot forget it was the developer who took the MRSCtoVCATtwo years ago.
It was the developer who wasted seven days of ratepayers' funds.
It was the developer who broughtalong both aQCand abarrister
But who forced the residentsto undertake significant fundraising efforts tohire a barrister, you might ask?
It was the MRSC, because it refused to hire alawyer
That is not how you represent the residents of acommunity
FoKS have only ever asked for this area to be developed in away that respects the landscape, environment and character
The MRSC planning department’sconditions do not cut the mustard. If allowed to pass, theywill change Kyneton South. Forever

The residents living on Adamson Street between Mollison Street and Drake Street Malmsbury, after requesting an approxi-
mate 135m bitumen upgrade similar to that of neighbouring Orr Street, have received nil feedback from the council, only to find out the result via areport in the May 2editionofthe Midland Express Initially,onDecember 6, 2022, we provided asigned petition requesting asite meeting. This has never been addressed. Our request also stated residents were prepared to contribute toward the bitumen upgrade.
The article mentions dust, potholes and noise but not the primary reason for our request, which is the danger we face on a daily basis as aresult of those potholes. Vehicles and cyclists often cross onto the wrong side of Adamson Street to avoid damage from the potholes.
The highway traffic (Mollison Street) turning into Adamson Street often faces traffic on the wrong side of the roadway avoiding potholes, causing aneed to stop mid-turn on the highway (Mollison Street).
Most residents havewitnessed road rage and or near-miss events.
Bear in mind the intersection is very near the hill peak, no turning lane or sideroom with white posts on the opposite side, affording very limited space to evade impact. Horn blasts and abuse are acommon event.
The article states the observed number of vehicle movements is 152 per day Regardless of direction travelled, that is 152 potential collisions per day, anumber way too large to disregard.
May we also point out that the counter tapes, because of extensive road damage (potholes) were placed well back from the intersection of Adamson Street and Mollison Street thus discounting properties beyond the counter tapes, making the count of 152 vehicle movements per day inaccurate and extreme when this affects only seven houses.
We alsonote the potholes were only addressed after the tape removal, lasting but afew days.
The corrugations are once again forming midway along this section.
As stated previously, the town has seen extensive building works and thus the traffic and dust increase.
There is averyeasyand long-term fix to traffic safety and noise from bouncing trucks, heavy machinery and tradie utes and trailers.
Residents are keen to make themselves available to attend an onsite meeting as soon as possible to discuss further action.

Investigators are requesting Gisborne residents, particularly those wholive in Gardiner Street, Carroll Court, Fersfield Road, Manassa Drive, Lauren Court, Sansom Street, Hamilton Street and Aitkin Street, check their CCTV cameras for any suspicious activity
Any CCTV of interest can be reported to the Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit on 5421 2900.
Due to the major work required on the site, a full site shutdown will commence on Monday May 22 to Friday May26.
During this period, Telstra will work to keep some technology operating as much as possible, however there will be times when afull outage will be required. If all goes well, work will be completed on May26. This will have impact to services in some parts of Mount Macedon, Woodend, Newham, Tylden and Carlsruhe.
Telstra mobile customers may start receiving text messages advising them of the upcoming service disruption next week.

Any calls to Triple Zero from aTelstra mobile when the site is offair will automatically be diverted to any working mobile network for connection to emergency services.
Regional general manager for Telstra, Steve Tinker, said the service disruption was required to perform the significant work needed to provide the new technology and speed and capacity to Mount Macedon and the surrounding area.
“While coverage and capacity will be impacted during this time, we want to keep the amount of time the site is offair to an absolute minimum, and the give the community as much time as possible to plan for the disruption,” he said.
Please note that the upgrade is intended to improve mobile connectivity in the existing coverage footprint.

OBITUARY
Beloved balladeer
Broderick Smith
February 17, 1948 –April 30, 2023
Birthday Club
Renowned Australian singer, songwriter and musician, Broderick Smith, has died at his home in Castlemaine aged 75.
Born in Hertfordshire England, Brod emigrated to Australia with his family in 1959, settling in St Albans in Melbourne’s west.
Leaving school at 15, he worked as a messenger boy before taking ajob as a sales clerk at Allans Music retail store in Melbourne. On weekends Brod would play in small-time bands, initially on percussion.
In 1966 he joined the Adderley Smith Blues Band on vocals and harmonica alongside future Dingoes multi-instrumentalist Kerryn Tolhurst, although this was short lived as in 1968 Brod was conscripted into the Australian army, where he spent two years at Holsworthy Army Base in in south western Sydney. Brod would say in later years that his affinity with the Australian bush came from the close proximity he had to it during those days at Holsworthy.
Upon his discharge, Brod played briefly with country music group Sundown (also featuring Tolhurst) and in 1971 joined established blues rock band Carson, who were included on the bill of the first Sunbury Rock Festival in 1972. Carson recorded two charting singles and adebut album Blown, for Harvest Records which reached #14 in the National album charts in December. Not long after performing at the second Sunbury Rock Festival in 1973, Carson split. Harvest released alive recording of their performance titled On the Air in April 1973.
That same year, Brod won the role of The Father in the Australian production of the rock opera Tommy, alongside Daryl Braithwaite, Ross Wilson, Billy Thorpe, Doug Parkinson, Colleen Hewett and other stars of the day. He also formed The Dingoes with Kerryn Tolhurst and Chris Stockley, once again taking on vocal duties and harmonica.
The Dingoes early lineup eventually settled to include John Bois and John Lee and the band had successful singles with Boy On The Run and Way Out West and their self-titled debut album reached #18 on the national album chart. The Dingoes performed at both the 1974 and 1975 Sunbury Rock Festivals, giving Brod the distinction of having played all four Sunbury Festivals.
In 1976 the band relocated to the United States, where following protracted negotiations signed adealwith the tour management team behind the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
In October 1977, just prior to The Dingoes joining Lynyrd Skynyrd’s American tour as the opening act, three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd died when their chartered plane crashed in Mississippi.
The aftermath left the Skynyrd management team devastated and amid spiralling morale, their interest in The Dingoes virtually vanished overnight. The Dingoes remained in America until they split in early 1979 following the commercial failure of their third album Orphans of the Storm
Upon returning to Melbourne, Brod fronted several bands, most notably Broderick Smith’s Big Combo. In August 1980 Brod joined the all-star cast for the legendary Andrew Durant Memorial Concert at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre, acelebration of Durant’s songs with the band Stars, following his death from cancer aged just 25.
Brod’s moving performance of Andy’s final, previously unheard song, Ocean Deep, was and remains ahighlight of the night, which has deservedly gone down in the annals of Australian music history thanks to the concert being both recorded and filmed.
Broderick Smith’s Big Combo went on to establish aloyal following around the Australian pub circuit, signing with Glenn Wheatley’s Wheatley Records and in 1981 enjoyed considerable success with aselftitled album and two hit singles, Faded Roses and My Father’s Hands.Featuring some
of the country’s finest musicians, Big Combo gained areputation for alive show second to none, performing amix of original songs with aselection of covers from artists including Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison.
By 1983, however, with no new original material to record, Brod and Big Combo co-founder, guitarist Mal Eastick, agreed to dissolve the band. Brod went on to spend the rest of the 1980s with varying lineups playing largely original material.
In the early 1990s Brod relocated to Castlemaine and continued to release highly acclaimed –ifnot mega selling –albums, most notably Suitcase, released on the Mushroom label in 1992. Featuring the legendary guitarist Steve Cropper of Booker T. &The M.G.s, along with the equally legendary Memphis Horns and some top-notch Australian musicians, Suitcase contains arguably one of Brod’s finest songs, the wistful Snowblind Moon
Brod went on to release another six albums, the last in 2018, titled Man out of Time.Released on the Bloodlines label simultaneously with ahandsome, lavishly presented memoir of the same name, published by Starman Books.
Brod also took on occasional acting work appearing in television dramas Blue Heelers and State Coroner among others, but music –especially his lyrics –remained his true love.
Agifted harmonica player, who for many years was an ambassador for Hohner Harmonicas, Brod used his considerable talent on harp to enhance asong, rather than dominate it. For Brod it was all about getting agood tone. “Always about the tone and not showing off with lots of notes,” he would say, “the song is the star and it’s better to play just afew notes that are right, than lots of notes wrong”.
Ever modest about his guitar-playing skills, at solo gigs he would often say “I don’t so much play the guitar as Imodel it”.
It was this humility along with his easy smile that drew people to him. On stage he was gregarious, charismatic and self-deprecating in equal measure. He was anatural raconteur; many of his shows would include as much storytelling as there was music. The stories were always hilarious.
Off the stage he was an affable, downto-earth everyman, always happy to stop for achat. He loved Castlemaine and there are many here who loved him. Laughter came to him easily, his sense of humour defiantly out of left field.
Brod remained close to his children, now all adults. He loved and was proud of each of them. His son Ambrose –also a musician –isinthe band King Gizzard and The Wizard Lizard, who have significant followings in the US and across Europe. Brod wrote and performed the spoken word narration for the band’s 2013 concept album, Eyes Like The Sky
Remaining humble and philosophical throughout his career, Brod was known for his generosity, kindness, and willingness to help others in the music industry and in the wider community. In his later years, he presented numerous workshops on songwriting and harmonica to schools and conducted regular music programs in prisons around central Victoria.
Brod continued performing right until the end, in March playing the Capital Theatre in Bendigo as support to two-time Grammy nominee Eric Bibb. His last performance in Castlemaine was on April 1, guesting with the Chequerboard Lounge Band at Theatre Royal as part of the Fringe Festival.
Brod’s final show was at Jaycee Park in Mildura with Richard Tankard, as support to John Williamson, only eight days before his death.
Broderick Smith was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1995.

Huge win for U16 Rangers
Woodend tops in pennant
Bill West
Woodend has confirmed its rating as the top pennant side in the Dalhousie District Golf Association with atight 3-2 victory in the division 1scratch final.
The back-to-back win was achieved on the Euroa course after being switched there at late notice from Maryville due to greens being cored.
Undeterred, the Woodend players adapted to the pressure of being defending champions with an unbeaten pennant record in the lead-up matches this season, as well as the course switch.
DDGA pennant finals in 2025 aswell."
Hearnden also thanked the strong contingent of Woodend members who travelled to Euroa to lend their support on the Sunday
The final was not without its anxious moments for Woodend as Hidden Valley players produced some fine golf
The Woodsmen achieved an early confidence-boosting lead with match-play victories to team captain Matt Payne and life member Andrew Davies.
Kyneton Rangers U16 Girls played in Woodend on Saturday against the Epsom Scorpions. Kyneton dominated the game with an impressive goal from Bronte in the fouth minute of the game, followed by another two from Sian in as many minutes.
The Kyneton girls' skill and precision in passing, rarely allowed the ball outside of their attacking half. Epsom held strong in defence but were ultimately outskilled, with many of the Kyneton Rangers pushing forward displaying technical accuracy, utilising space wide on the field to advance on goal.
Captain Emma led with quiet confidence and supporting positive talk among the girls throughout the game.
In the second half, Kyneton scored another four goals, the first from acorner kick by Amber to captain Emma. Striking support from Amber fed another ball into the top corner of the goal. Amassive 50m kick from Bec found the back of the net, closing offwith Sian for the final goal for ahat trick.
Kyenton 7, defeated Epsom nil, to win their second game and now sit comfortably on the ladder in the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League.

Agony, ecstasy eccsstas as Tigers win s Tiiggeers s n
Adesperate Kyneton victory by two points at Gisborne on Saturday brings various ramifications for the Bendigo League’s football season.
When the final siren blew it was a mixture of emotions both on and offthe field; agony for the reigning premiers who want Gardiner Reserve to be afortress, and jubilation as Kyneton stays alive with two successive victories and amatch to follow against arch rivals Castlemaine on May 27.
The Tigers’ spirit was well and truly back with the scoreboard showing a12.3 (75) to 10.13 (73) result; the Bulldogs were in line for an afternoon’sclean sweep of netball and football victories until the main footy match provided adifferent outcome to what many anticipated.
It’sa bye across the BFNL this Saturday and both Gisborne and Kyneton players may well appreciate the break.
Atremendous start by the Tigers es-
tablished an early lead on Saturday, and it was never relented though the Bulldogs rallied strongly in the very tense last quarter to whittle down the margin.
Abig plus for Gisborne was the return of champion forward Paddy McKenna. He kicked five of his side’s10goals despite plenty of attention from the Tiger defenders.
McKenna in the Gisborne side provides much more attacking power against the stronger sides.
The elusive Cam Manuel was at his brilliant best for the winners.
There was plenty of anticipation at three-quarter-time in both camps, and the Tigers defended grimly as the time clock ticked down, and supporters agonised on the outcome.
Manuel finished with four goals, and Jake Summers turned in one of his best games, with strong defender Harry Huntley proving his worth.
Tigerstake Equity Cup
The annual Gender Equity Cup resulted in an easy win for Kyneton over Mount Alexander Falcons at Harcourt on Saturday afternoon.
It was Jen Schellekens' 50th game for the Tigers and for the first half the Falcons applied plenty of pressure in ahalf where the unbeaten Tigers scored 3.5.
The game was back in Kyneton’sfavour well and truly in the second half, with the margins being 12.12 to 2.1.
Taylah Moore’ssix goals took her tally to 21 in three games.
Best for the winners were H. Erasmus, P. Turnbull, P. Williams, A. Strawhorn, E. Gibson and T. Ainslie.
The match was played in good spirits as both teams have a strong connection in the work they are doing offthe field in access, inclusion and equity in sport.
Highlight of the day was the presentation of the Equity Cup, described as “when acup is not acup”.
It is an incredible piece of artwork designed and created by local artist Anna Schwann.
One continuous piece of metal cast in solid aluminium, it weighs about seven kilos. Easy enough for one to lift, but more satisfying to lift by many
Made to be held by many, the cup has abundant twists and turns that act as grips, ashared experience. The salient point of this design is to hold the cup to celebrate your community and the ride that got you to this point, together
Special thanks went to Craig MacDonald from Garage Art Foundry,Elphinstone and Duncan Freedman from RMIT’sFoundry for support with construction and casting.
Of the younger brigade, local lads Dom Bonnington and Brody Muir impressed again, and Mason Crozier and Angus Strawhorn were also valuable.
Gisborne will be left ruing some missed opportunities, and May 27 sees atrip north to Golden Square.
In the Reserves match, the Bulldogs seized control early keen to make amends for two very narrow defeats.
An excellent low-scoring game unfolded, but the home side made sure Kyneton did not get aflood of goals.
Coach Ryan Pretty continued his good form for the Kyneton, with Bayden Ganim, Francis Randall, Brody Thrum, Jack Pilbeam, and Darcy Harris also in good form.
Final score was 8.9 (57)to 5.7 (37).
The Gisborne Under 18s are premiership favourites, out to repeat their 2022 success.
Their polished ball movement paid dividends, and Tigers’ coach Ethan Foreman
will have his side primed for three critical games after the bye.
Better players for Kyneton were William Armstrong, Dempsey Roberts, Cody Young, Josh Gray,Cormac Sutton and Lachlan Thompson.
Adominant Gisborne won 24.13 (157) to 2.1 (13).
Tough innetball
Kyneton netball teams, low in numbers with illnesses across all grades, found the going tough against polished Gisborne sides on Saturday
The Kyneton A-graders battled hard at both ends of the court, with Tilly Shepherd and Jessica Mangan turningover plenty of missed shots
Quick transition and strong defensive pressure led to Gisborne’s54-26 victory. Scores in Gisborne’sfavour in the other four matches were: Senior A-reserve –82 –22; B-grade –71-37; B-reserve –63-18; 17&Under –92-9.

Dom Bonnington was among Kyneton’s best in the Tigers’ victory over Gisborne on Saturday. (Inset) Tom Quinn scored two goals for the Tigers.
Saintsdemolish Rovers
Trentham footballers are ready to go and produce awinning performance when they travel to Harcourt on Saturday
Both sides are unbeaten after five rounds, and top spot beckons for the Saints.
They demolished Maryborough Rovers by amassive 234 points on Saturday, with Sam Winnard leading the way with 14 majors.
Trentham Reserves also went on a scoring spree, kicking 38 goals.
Luke Whitehouse 11,and Joshua Gray and Mitchell Jensen each contributed six.
LIONS TRIUMPH
Harcourt faced its first real test of the 2023 season when it travelled across the Moolort Plains to tackle top three contender Carisbrook on Saturday
The first quarter was areal scrap as both sides fought for possession and the ascendency early with the Redbacks kicking 1.2 and holding the Lions to 0.3 to hold aslender nine point lead at quarter time.
The battled continued in the second term with both Brook and Lions only managing two goals apiece while other shots went begging.
At half-time the home side retained a five-point advantage over the 2022 premiers.
The crowd at Hedges Oval were treated to areal spectacle in the third as both sides smashed on another six goals at each end of the ground, but with both sides applying plenty of pressure around the goals alot of chances went begging.

Tie in netball
Chasing their first win, Romsey A-grade netballers had to settle for a49-49 tie in athrilling finish against Western Rams on Saturday
Woodend-Hesket’splaying coach Mel Grbac was pleased with her side’s53-23 result at home to Melton Centrals, following an unexpected defeat against Rams in the previous round.
Riddell continued its good form with a65-29 demolition of reigning premiers Diggers Rest, and undefeated ladder-leader Macedon eclipsed Lancefield 57-31.
Other RDFNL grade scores were:
B-grade: Lancefield 44 dMacedon 39, Rams 31 dRomsey 21, Melton Centrals 36 dWoodendHesket 32, Diggers Rest 41 d Riddell 27.

Bill West
Big ruckman TimMartin (pictured), a dual Michelsen Medal winner for Sandhurst, showed on Saturday he will be ahuge asset to Woodend-Hesket’spush to reach the Riddell League finals this season
Martin won the Michelsen in 2013 and 2014, and was best afield for Banyule against Eltham in the 2022 grand final.
He was also best afield in his first match on Gilbert Gordon Oval on Saturday, and should improve further as the season progresses.
May be worth going to Romsey this Saturday to see how Martin deals with the challenge from the Redbacks’ ruck duo of Matt Huy and Ben Way!
Woodend-Hesket’stalented smaller brigade, including Ethan Minns, Daniel Toman, and Sam Medland, must be excited to have Martin as aHawk.
In Saturday’smatch, which was scrappy and congested at times, the Hawks were never going to lose against Melton Centrals, but both sides struggled to score goals for much of the match.
Only five goals came in the first half, and the final score in favour of the Hawks was 8.9 (57) to 2.7 (19).
Romsey,with the irrepressible Jack Jed-
wab kicking eight goals, demolished Western Rams by 105 points, with speedster Aaron Paterson again having an influence.
The Hawks could put quality defender Marcus close to Jedwab on Saturday Redbacks’ coach Justin Sherman has had the Redbacks in training since midNovember and is confident team plans are working out, as shown when beating Riddell on May 6.
Recruiting umpires
Riddell faced another tough test at home to Diggers Rest on Saturday, with the visitors leading throughout after a5.3 first-term burst.
The final margin was 15 points, with Diggers Rest avenging last season’sgrand final defeat.
The Bombers will probably welcome having the bye this Saturday, then return for two very winnable games before taking on Wallan.
Lancefield, after awin over Melton Centrals, welcomed Macedon under lights on Saturday evening.
The Cats, still without injured captain Jason Cook, were happy to break through for their first win, with Hamish Govan (ex-Kyneton) turning in atop game, while defender Luke Fellowes and skipper TomWaters were again in the Tigers’ best.
150th BOOK SOON
Lancefield play at Wallan onSaturday, and are gearing up for the launch of the club’sspecial 150th History Book at the match against Romsey on May 27.
Ahighlight will be the senior team wearing areplica of Lancefield’sfirst premiership team from 1888.
The guernsey will carry the name and number of each of the players from the 1888 team on the sash.
Lancefield’sA-grade netballers will wear a replica of the first netball dress Lancefield ever donned.
Riddell Umpires Association is making aconcerted effort to boost the number of umpires available for the remainder of this season.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) evening a‘Come andTry Night is being held at Melton'sMacPherson Park for potential umpires –field, goal or boundary
Special guests will be AFL field umpires Jacob Mollison and Rob Findlay
It’sa chance forrecently retired or ex-players to stay in the game and consider umpiring.
Male or female, of all ages, are invited to come along, with training to begin at 6pm.
