Thefts impact Riddell Destruction and theft of electrical systems at Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve has caused Telstra mobile interruption and cut power to sporting venues.

and damaged electrical switchboards and an electrical pillar from the grounds last week.

Powercor crews discovered the damage when responding to a fault at the reserve early Sunday December 3.

"The incident involved offenders removing underground copper cables from elec-

tricity infrastructure, leaving the community reserve area without lighting or power," a Powercor spokesperson said.

"Extensive repairs will need to be conducted at the site to restore the recreation reserve; we will work closely with relevant authorities to repair the damage as soon

Telstra regional general manager Jenny Gray said a power cut in the area affected Telstra's mobile base station, disrupting mobile services for the Riddells Creek community.

Licence amended

Malmsbury Reservoir’s picturesque access bridge is undergoing a major refurbishment of the heritage-listed structure.

While the reservoir itself was completed in 1870, the current dam outlet, tower and 50-metre long access bridge was constructed in 1906.

Coliban Water's chief officer of assets and operations, Danny McLean, said works began last week on the $895,000 project to rehabilitate the bridge.

“This will include replacing the bridge’s foundations, repairing and refurbishing the steel bridge structure, its cast iron supports and bluestone abutment," he said.

“This is a fantastic project to ensure this beautiful historic structure can be maintained well into the future."

The bridge was removed by crane in four

12-metre-long sections, and transported off-site for repair.

“Removal of the bridge will also allow for closer inspection of other parts of the structure that may need attention,” Mr McLean said.

“There are buckled parts of the walkway and steelwork that is rusted beyond repair. Our contractor Civil and Earth Australia will be taking extra care as they carry out this work.

“The bridge will remain closed to the public once works are complete. However, Malmsbury Reservoir remains a popular destination for visitors and families who can enjoy walking, shoreline fishing, kayaking, canoeing and onwater recreation."

Coliban Water has worked closely with Heritage Victoria, Dja Dja Wurrung and other key stakeholders in the lead up to the works.

EPA Victoria has approved an amended operating licence to Coliban Water for its Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant but has not granted the dilution ratio requested by the water authority.

The licence allows Coliban to discharge excess wastewater from the plant to the Campaspe River in emergencies, and CW was requesting a dilution ratio of one part effluent for every two parts of the receiving surface water flow rate.

But an EPA spokesperson said that after careful consideration, including feedback from the public, the amended licence set a ratio of less than one part effluent for every three parts of the receiving surface water flow rate of the river.

"To ensure the licence discharge ratio is able to be accurately calculated, EPA has stipulated the river flow is measured upstream of the discharge point," the spokesperson said.

"The licence also includes more stringent water quality parameters in any waters discharged.

"These parameters are important to protecting the health of the river from the discharge.

"The receiving river water flow rate is to be measured upstream of the discharge point."

A Coliban Water spokesperson said CW was now undertaking a technical assessment of the licence in order to understand its impact on the plant's operations.

Fatal crash in Lancefield

The driver, a 53-year-old Lancefield man, died at the scene. Three passengers, a 44-year-old Clarkefield woman, a 53-yearold Lancefield woman and a 35-year-old Clarkefield man, all remain in hospital.

Kyneton police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash in Lancefield early Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash on Notmans Lane, near Shannons Road, about 12.30am.

Police believe the silver Ford Ranger lost control and crashed into a culvert and then into a concrete bridge.

RCCC president Susan McNair said the incident was a blow to the club.

"This is having quite an impact on the club. The irrigation system is not working,

there is no lighting on the grounds and the clubrooms have no electricity," she said.

"The council has been working with us to find a solution. If we can keep getting water to the grounds we will be able to play cricket but we won't be able to play into the evenings without lights. Social and community events will also be impacted.

"This will impact on our income for the year and there will be things that may have to be delayed as a result."

Ms McNair said the club committee was working hard to continue as many of its planned events as possible.

"We're hopeful the council will continue to work with us on this to get power to the clubrooms in some way and irrigation to the oval is important," she said.

Local skaters have voiced their frustration at Mount Alexander Shire Council's decision to cover the Castlemaine Skate Park in anti-graffiti paint, claiming the painted surface makes the park slippery and dangerous.

ONI Street Wear owner Josh Salmon said customers had told him they'd stopped using the facility because the surface no longer had any grip, making it unsafe to do technical moves.

"Professionals and people in the know are staying away and it was a waste of money because it's still being graffitied anyway," Josh said.

"Little kids won't use the half pipe. But if they go up a little way, they will slip.

"The space needs to be made safer for little kids anyway, with more flat areas with ledges and lighting."

Longtime skater and owner of Mobile Skateboards, Aslan Oram, told the Express that since the park had been painted people could no longer skate the ramp.

"I've been skating on and off since 1987 and skating in Castlemaine for the past five years," Aslan said.

"I went there a few weeks ago and the ramp is super slippery now it's been painted, it's virtually unskateable. I have slid out doing kick turns, which is just going up and down.

"The council should have used concrete with a matte finish to give it texture.

"I don't understand why they've painted it. I've been to lots of skate parks with graffiti walls, which encourage kids to be artistic," he said.

According to one local skater the paint, applied a few months ago, covered a commissioned artwork and had graffiti scrawled across it within a few days.

"And the condition of the park is stopping people from skating there anymore."

Jordan, a regular skater at the park, said that after the half pipe was painted his board slipped out from underneath him and he fell and tore ligaments in his wrist.

The Express contacted Mount Alexander Shire Council regarding the concerns. A council spokesperson said they were unaware of any negative comments regarding the improvements.

A 16-week Permaculture Design Course, led by local permaculture experts, Beck Lowe and Ian Lillington, will be running in Castlemaine this February.

Now in it's 15th year, the internationally recognised course aims to help participants design a life that works for them, the community and the planet.

As living costs rise, designing energy-efficient homes, learning how to grow your own food and to live frugally can be a huge money saver.

The course uses a combination of classroom-based sessions and local site visits to help participants learn how to increase household resilience, grow food where they live, design gardens, farms and buildings and lower their carbon footprint.

Tutors Bec and Ian each have more than 20 years' experience teaching permaculture around the world, but their teaching methods also derive from their daily lived experiences.

"My partner and I live on an acre of land on the edge of Campbells Creek and permaculture is a hugely important component of my everyday life," Ian said.

Riddells Creek Fire Brigade is expected to move to a new site at 180 Main Road.

The Country Fire Authority confirmed the land purchase took place on August 16 “after an exhaustive search”.

“Many sites were considered over four years, and this site meets all operational requirements to best protect the local community,” a CFA spokesperson told the Express.

They confirmed that the old brigade site will be sold as per the State Government Land Transactions Policy.

Angie’s Cafe and Bakeshop and t2zero have joined forces to deliver a free community Christmas lunch for Kyneton people doing it tough this year.

Trentham-based business t2zero is funding the lunch and Angie’s Cafe and Bakeshop is providing the venue in a bid to bring together community.

“People are really struggling with the high cost of living – in the past year especially – it has been really difficult for people,” t2zero’s Jürgen and Debra Rhyon said.

“We wanted to put on something for people to enjoy at this time of year but it’s not something we could do ourselves.”

Jürgen and Debra are regular diners at Angie’s and soon after sharing the idea, the trio began planning to make it happen.

“This was just an idea for a random act of kindness at Christmas time and Angie has embraced it,” Jürgen said.

Castlemaine Secondary College bandmates of popular local 90s group 'Smokers Run Faster' have pulled a finger out and reformed and will be performing for one night only at Castlemaine's Theatre Royal this Friday.

Twenty-three years after their last gig, the former reprobates and misfits are looking forward to reuniting for the reunion show.

SRF played the Carrier's Arms Hotel (now XXXX antiques), The Five Flags, The Criterion, Theatre Royal, The Bridge, Harcourt Valley Vineyards, Sunny Sedgewick Festival (with a guest appearance by Chris Wilson) and many other venues, festivals, house parties and backyards in and around Castlemaine back in the day.

The lineup for Friday's gig includes Gus Read-Hill, Michael (Fabio) Vickers, David Meneilly, Tim Carruthers, Tom Foster, Rory Willaton and Tim Heath.

The band felt it was fitting to invite a current CSC youth band to join them in support and are looking forward to welcoming 2023 Battle of the Band winners Fryer to open Friday's gig.

This will be a great opportunity to reunite with your former schoolmates and reminisce on times past.

When it comes to the work of composting; building, turning, moving and distributing, forks are the tool of choice. There are three broad fork categories; garden, pitch and manure/mulch, each doing its own job in a particular way. Let’s have a little dig around and see what we find.

Most gardeners will have a common garden fork (often mistakenly called a pitch fork), with four tines (prongs) and a short shaft, ending in a D-shape handle. These familiar garden tools excel at opening and loosening up garden soil and work well in close confines or where we don’t have to reach far.

They can, at a pinch, do all the tasks of compost making, but they don’t usually excel at any of them, being better suited to their traditional work of soil loosening.

Classic pitchforks – traditionally used to ‘pitch’ hay onto a haystack – have three thin, widely spaced tines and a long, straight shaft/handle. Occasionally you will find four and, very rarely fivetine ‘pitch’ style forks.

Pitchforks work very well with long clumpy material like hay, straw and stemmy weeds and work a treat in the early stages of compost making; building, blending and turning. The long shaft may get in the way if your garden space is tight, but can help when your compost bay is big and you have a long way to reach.

They are a more ergonomically balanced tool for moving material than the garden fork, which is suited to pushing into the soil.

Both garden forks and pitchforks stop working so well once the compost is near finished, with the matured compost material falling through the small number of wide-spaced tines. Enter the manure fork.

Manure or mulch forks have lots of tines (9 – 10 is not unusual), tighter spacing and greater width than other forks. They excel at moving finished compost out of our bays and around the garden.

Old forks are worth looking out for, they were usually very well made, reparable and often have fantastic balance in the hands.

The forged tines (identifiable as they taper over their length) of old forks are thin, springy and strong, going easily into material and coping with a lot of stress.

Many modern garden forks are just bent mild steel with pointed ends that will bend under load. Well-made new tools are still available, but they are not as common as their poorly made look-alikes,

and you’ll need to be prepared to pay for the extra work that goes into them.

When lifting heavy loads with a fork try putting your non-dominant hand – the one closest to the head of the tool – over the top of the tool, not under. This reduces stress on the wrist, and makes for more efficient working. Your wrist and arm will thank you.

A good tool, used in the right way, can make the tasks of composting efficient and pleasurable. Happy composting!

The members of Brasslemaine will set the mood with tunes played at the 1851 gathering.

"Gold pans will be provided and there will be plenty of fun. But like the 1851 Diggers discovered, not everyone will find gold in the creek. It is all a matter of luck," Pat said.

"Brasslemaine Brass Band will perform from 4pm followed by speeches from Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards, who will tell the story of the Monster Meeting and its impact, and Angela Gaynor, from Parks Victoria, who will share updates on what is planned for the park in the coming year," she said.

"The landscape of that 1851 Diggers’ Meeting is still evident today in the park and the Diggers who started a protest movement that kick-started the march to democracy in Victoria are still here in spirit."

The Monster Meeting site can be found in Golden Point Road, a short distance from the Pyrenees Highway intersection. All are welcome to attend.

Take a trip back into our goldfields past at the annual 1851 Diggers’ Monster Meeting celebration at Chewton this Sunday.

The commemorative event will take place on the original site of the historic meeting on the banks of Forest Creek in the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park at Chewton from 3pm.

The meeting on December 15, 1851, saw 15,000 gold diggers gather for Australia's first mass anti-government protest against Governor La Trobe's plan to double the cost of their gold licences.

Chewton Domain Society and Parks Victoria invite community members once again join them in commemorating the occasion with brass band music like the music the Diggers heard in 1851, and gold panning in Forest Creek.

Chewton Domain Society member Pat Healy said the gold panning would begin at 3pm and would be led by Parks Victoria Rangers Lachlan Cullum and Laurence Farr.

Little library goers at Kyneton were thrilled to witness an unexpected escapade last Wednesday.

Three cows in a trailer on their way to Hardwicks abattoir managed to pull a pin out and free themselves at the intersection of High and Mollison Streets.

The escapees ran into the Kyneton Mechanics Reserve and were headed towards the library when quickthinking onlookers herded them into the children's playground instead.

A library staff member saw them approaching and locked the automatic doors to prevent them coming inside.

Little library goers were delighted with the scene unfolding out the window!

Go along to the Reconciliation Reading at Kyneton Library where the Macedon Ranges Truth and Reconciliation Group will provide readings and discussion to enhance awareness and respect of First Nations cultures, knowledge, experience and country.

The text they will be discussing is Living on Stolen Land by Ambelin Kwaymullina. This title speaks to many First Nations’ truths; stolen lands, sovereignties, time, decolonisation, First Nations perspectives, systemic bias and other constructs that inform our present discussions and ever-expanding understanding. This title is a timely, thought-provoking and accessible read.

Central Victoria’s tourism industry has been given a boost as organisations look to develop innovative ways to encourage people to stay longer in the region.

The Victorian Government has awarded $50,000 to Daylesford Macedon Tourism and a $625,000 to Goldfield Gateways from its Visitor Servicing Fund.

Daylesford Macedon Tourism will use the funds to deliver the DMT Regional Visitor Servicing Strategy working with Hepburn and Macedon Ranges sire councils to optimise investment in visitor servicing through physical and digital channels.

The scope of the project will include: new visitor and community research, industry workshops and interviews; clarity on what visitor services should be delivering; and delivery of a visitor servicing strategy.

Goldfields Gateway will use its funding to present a world-class integrated physical and digital wayfinding system that captures and informs the visitor, inviting them to explore the Victorian Goldfields.

The project covers six local government areas and the tourism regions of Tourism Midwest Victoria, Daylesford Macedon Ranges Tourism and Bendigo Regional Tourism.

This project will identify key visitation sites, develop compelling and beautiful wayfinding and physical storytelling that links to existing digital platforms.

A program offering a three-day retreat to dementia sufferers and their carers has been praised by the Minister for Health MaryAnne Thomas.

A frightened and trapped wallaby was rescued from a residential street in Gisborne last month with the help of three local children.

Chloe, Elias and Oliver helped wildlife rescuer Sue Anderson find the injured wallaby in their street.

"The wallaby had smashed its face against a fence trying to find a way out so the kids pointed to where he was hiding behind a car in someone's driveway," Sue said.

"I darted the wallaby and he went to sleep and then the children were allowed to come down and touch him."

Sue said the children helped her roll the wallaby onto the stretcher and then carried it over to the car.

"I took it to Gisborne Veterinary Clinic and they gave him a good examination, and x-rayed his face and jaw where he smashed his face to make sure it wasn't broken," Sue said.

"These kids were a huge help in locating the wallaby quickly and it was just before school time so traffic was getting worse.

"When I spoke to their parents they said they all love animals, and Elias, the middle child, said he would love to be a wildlife rescuer when he grows up."

Volunteers wanted Macedon Ranges Shire Council is searching for community-minded residents with some spare time to help service an expanding program of diverse, fulfilling volunteer initiatives.

The council relies on volunteers to help deliver services across many areas including visitor information centres, environment and the Kyneton Museum.

Volunteers will also be needed to help manage planned resale shops at resource recovery facilities in Kyneton and Romsey.

Recently, MRSC’s volunteer program expanded to include the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme: a free service available for aged care residential or home care package recipients, who are matched to a volunteer with similar interests for regular visits.

RM Begg Kyneton resident Alois recently joined the ACVVS program and has been matched with volunteer Diane Aliker for regular visits. He said he looked forward to Di’s visits and having meaningful conversations.

“I’m not a big talker, most men are not,

and Di would lead me. She would start something and we could converse. For me it's good to have someone coming to talk to, I enjoy it,” he said.

Di said she also looked forward to her visits and chats with Alois.

“He takes me for a little walk around every now and then to show me what’s going on, and sometimes we listen to music,” she said. “It’s something different to what I'm up to at home.”

Council’s director of community, Maria Weiss, said volunteering delivered a range of benefits for both the individual volunteering and the recipient, by strengthening social bonds and supporting inclusion.

“Our volunteers play a significant role in keeping our community connected, helping those who need assistance and providing company to those who may be feeling isolated or lonely,” she said.

Ms Weiss thanked volunteers for their contributions and encouraged anyone who had been thinking about volunteering to see what opportunities were available through the council's programs.

Castlemaine locals are invited to a Christmas picnic worship service in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens this Sunday December 17.

Castlemaine Uniting Church minister, Rev Sarah Tomilson, described the event as "not an ordinary carol sing".

"This is an opportunity for people to be part of the diverse Christian traditions in this town coming together in our beautiful gardens to celebrate the peace, joy and love of Christmas as one family," Rev Tomilson said.

"We are really looking forward to the marvellous young players of The Salvation Army 'Just Brass' band, made up of students

from our primary schools and Olivet College, swinging those carols under the trees.

"I believe this gathering will really show the spirit of Christmas and be part of the wider inclusivity of this town," she said.

The event will begin at 5pm and participants are urged to bring along a picnic tea, folding chair and rug to the area near the rotunda and sit back and enjoy this Christmas celebration.

Just Brass has been warming up for the event with some 'playouts' near the Market Hall building in Mostyn Street and will also perform for the residents of Arcare Castlemaine and at the Rotary Carols in the Park event on Friday evening, December 15.

Road blitz begins

Rebuilding, repairing and resurfacing roads across central Victoria has begun as part of the state government's regional road maintenance blitz.

Between now and June 2024, crews will deliver road rehabilitation and repair works on some of the region’s busiest and most important trade and travel routes.

Some of those roads earmarked for works include: Bendigo-Maldon Road, Calder Highway, Bridgewater-Maldon Road, Heathcote-Kyneton Road and Mount Macedon Road.

Under the state-wide program, road maintenance projects will be delivered, potholes will be patched, roadside grass will be mowed and signs will be replaced.

The blitz will also ensure other vital parts of the road network are well-maintained, including strengthening bridges, rebuilding culverts and retaining walls and inspecting and maintaining thousands of traffic lights, signs and other structures.

Ap passion assion tto o rrestore estore the the lland and Robert Hall As a kid, Fletcher Bakewell dreamed of owning a bit of land he could restore, a canvas on which he could help nature to flourish and bring back the integrity of the land.

Safari stories from his father’s childhood in Kenya and Tanzania had planted a seed, and he learned about the bush through his father’s work in outdoor education in schools. But while he loved the natural world, he didn’t just want to look at it – he wanted to rejuvenate damaged land.

“I always wanted to have something where we could give back to nature. It’s just spectacular. How could you not want to have that in your life?”

He fell hard for 200,000 acres north of Mildura, and when that dream faded, was drawn to 600 acres near the Grampians.

Finally, opportunity and financial reality landed him a 10-acre property on Deep Creek at Darraweit Guim.

The 50 degree escarpment down to Deep Creek was a canvas primed and waiting when Fletcher and his wife, Michelle, moved onto their property. Rows of gorse, hawthorn, sweet briar rose, blackberry and teasel – the work began!

As they cleared the weeds, they planted native species, 30,000 trees and shrubs across the escarpment and broader property.

They have had losses with bushfires but hungry wallabies have been their most determined destroyer. With little other vegetation around, their plantings proved irresistible.

and managed to get over the (exclusion) fence,” Fletcher said.

But Fletcher and Michelle refined their plant protection, testing and retesting different versions of tree guards and exclusion plots until they are now getting 80-90 per cent success.

Years of work have transformed a weedinfested and neglected parcel of land into an indigenous bird and animal paradise.

The Kyneton Community Carols will be held this year at St Paul's Church on Sunday December 17, starting at 7.30pm.

Go along and enjoy singing the traditional carols accompanied by the Kyneton Municipal Band and the Rotary choir.

Compèred by the Reverend Wayne Landford, this event is always a highlight of the Christmas season.

Riddell’s geese are part and parcel of the town’s landscape, but it’s not only motorists who are often warned to take care they don't cause them harm.

On the eve of Christmas, a plea has been made for everyone to remember the four Gs – Geese Gorge on Grass and Greens.

Bread is often offered by those keen to feed the geese, but long-time resident David Laurie points out that bread is heavy in salt, sugar and fat.

“Not only are these incompatible with the birds’ digestion, they can cause malnutrition by replacing the normal nutritious diet.

“Large pieces of bread can become stuck in the gullet, or be excreted to break down on the bottom of the waterway, increasing the bacterial growth.”

Mouldy bread can introduce a fungus called aspergillosis, which causes lung disease.

So the Christmas message is: Please inform your kids and ask friends, and in doing so protect our geese.

Dementia and heart disease sign?

Fluctuating blood pressure can increase the risk of dementia and vascular problems in older people a new study by Australian researchers has shown Short blood pressure fluctuations within 24 hours as well as over several days or weeks are linked with impaired cognition, say University of South Australia researchers who led the study.

Higher systolic BP variations (the top number that measures the pressure in arteries when a heart beats) are also linked with stiffening of the arteries, associated with heart disease.

The findings have been published in the journal Cerebral Circulation – Cognition and Behaviour. Lead author Daria Gutteridge, a PhD candidate based in UniSA’s Cognitive Ageing and Impairment Neuroscience Laboratory, says it’s wellknown that high blood pressure is a risk factor for dementia, but little attention is paid to fluctuating blood pressure.

“Clinical treatments focus on hypertension, while ignoring the variability of blood pressure,” Ms Gutteridge says.

“Blood pressure can fluctuate across different time frames – short and long – and this appears to heighten the risk of dementia and blood vessel health.”

To help explore the mechanisms that link BP fluctuations with dementia, UniSA researchers recruited 70 healthy older adults aged 60-80 years, with no signs of dementia or cognitive impairment.

Their blood pressure was monitored, they completed a cognitive test, and their

arterial stiffness in the brain and arteries was measured using transcranial doppler sonography and pulse wave analysis.

“We found that higher blood pressure variability within a day, as well as across days, was linked with reduced cognitive performance,” Ms Gutteridge says.

“We also found that higher blood pressure variations within the systolic BP were linked with higher blood vessel stiffness in the arteries.

“These results indicate that the different types of BP variability likely reflect different underlying biological mechanisms, and that systolic and diastolic blood pressure variation are both important for cognitive functioning in older adults.”

The links were present in older adults without any clinically relevant cognitive impairment, meaning that BP variability could potentially serve as an early clinical marker or treatment target for cognitive impairment, the researchers say.

Failing to brush teeth twice a day and floss once a day can not only contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, it can also make an existing diabetes condition worse, a fact very few Australians are aware of.

This is the key message in the Australian Dental Association’s Submission to the Inquiry Into Diabetes by the Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport recently under way.

The ADA is urging the federal government to educate those at risk about better looking after their mouths, as well as seeking to ensure healthcare professionals know about the link between oral and systemic disease – and mandating for clearer food and drink labelling.

The submission comes hot on the heels of the ADA’s nationwide annual campaign highlighting the intrinsic link between poor oral health and serious knockon effects on the rest of the body, including cardiovascular disease, alzheimer’s, rheumatoid arthritis and low birthweight and preterm babies in addition to diabetes.

“Type 2 diabetes and oral health have a bidirectional or two-way relationship,” ADA vice-president Dr Scott Davis says.

“So people with diabetes have high blood sugar levels, which can lead to gum disease, which when left untreated is now known to be one of the top complications of type 2.

“Gum disease, in turn, makes it difficult to control blood sugar levels and when left untreated, results in periodontitis, which in addition to receding gums, means the bones supporting the teeth break down, and teeth can fall out, as well as contributing to these other serious long-term health issues.”

Postie attacks on the rise

Does your dog chase the Postie? It mightn’t be such a good thing because more than 50 postal workers are falling victim to dog-related incidents each week, prompting calls for dog owners to secure their pets and help keep Posties safe.

Australia Post has seen a spike in dog-related incidents, with an average of 7.5 recorded each day nation-wide since July.

With the busiest time of year approaching, Australia Post is making a plea for dog owners to take action to help protect their Postie.

To help protect its team members, Australia Post has introduced several preventative measures aimed at reducing the number of dog-related incidents.

In addition to on-the-job training, Posties are provided with a digital hazard tracker that allows them to log the location of a hazardous dog. The next time they, or any other postie, approach a pre-logged location they will receive a warning notification on their device, allowing them to avoid it or take extra care.

Australia Post has also re-introduced a postmark featuring a message to secure your dog for safe delivery. The postmark will be stamped on envelopes processed through our letter facilities in Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland in a bid to remind residents of

the importance of securing their dog.

Despite ongoing public awareness campaigns from Australia Post, the frequency of dog-related incidents has not decreased.

Rod Maule, Australia Post’s general manager of safety and wellbeing, emphasised the simple steps dog owners could take to keep posties safe. * Always keep front gates securely closed. * Where possible, secure dogs in the back garden (rather than the front) and keep any side gates securely closed. * If you are expecting a delivery, be careful when opening your front door to ensure your dog doesn’t run out from behind you.

Keeping them safely in another room when you answer the door is a great way to prevent this.

Adopted 10 years ago as a threemonth-old kitten from the RSPCA, she now lives the life she had planned all along.

She stays indoors most of the time (she hates the loud sounds of cars she can hear outside) where she is snug in winter and cool in summer. She has a house with floor-to-ceiling glass doors so can keep an eye on life on the outside from an area of cat-like safety.

Sometimes she will be hidden away all day sleeping and only appear when her favourite family member comes home ... nobody else can feed her or cuddle her quite as well! Tabitha is very fussy about the people she will associate with.

If she associates a person with something she doesn’t like, their dog for example, she will forever hiss at that person and loathe them whether they are in the company of that dog of not!

It has been almost three years since the Macedon Shire Council asked residents to make suggestions about local signage.

I was one (probably only of a few) who contributed. My contribution was thanked via a personal telephone call.

Since that time (which included an additional letter to the editor), there has been no action.

Kyneton’s tourist signage remains appalling. It starts from the large sign just before the turn-off from the Calder into Kyneton where a prime sign is in danger of falling over. If I was a Kyneton providore or restaurateur I would be outraged, as it makes no mention of our town’s great eateries and fresh food outlets.

The most prominent signage is near the tourist information office, and that takes tourists to wineries that are many kilometres from Kyneton!

I know in this age people have mobile phones and cars with satellite navigation,

but one has to know what to look for to be able to navigate to it.

I despair about what we are losing in tourism dollars. Don’t get me started about council inaction on caravanners and visitors with disabilities (although it could take notice of the Hepburn Shire, which clearly believes in tourism).

He expressed everything I feel regarding kangaroo 'harvesting'.

We should be proud and celebrate our beautiful kangaroos, as visitors to Australia do.

To kill them for pet food is monstrous.

Now we need Macedon Ranges Shire to step up and be counted and show the world we are not in favour of destroying our national emblem to extinction.

As we have 3.1 per cent of all federal, state and territory parliamentarians who identify as Indigenous, the writer seems to think this is a very good reason why we didn't need an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

My understanding though is that an Indigenous parliamentarian, just like one of Indian, Chinese or Greek descent, is there to represent all Australians in their electorate.

The job of politicians is to represent Australian voters and make laws and policies.

The role of the Indigenous Voice was to be a very different thing.

And for all those to parroted there wasn't enough detail about what that was, the quickest way to have informed yourself would have been to take a couple of minutes to Google it.

This summer, Goods Shed is offering two fantastic Youth Creative Labs: The Youth Performance Making Lab with Melbournebased performance collective Pony Cam, and The Creative Media Lab with musician/broadcaster Eliza Hull and filmmaker Keiran Watson-Bonnice.

The two projects will happen during the same week, January 15-19, and cross over by two days, in which the groups will intersect and collaborate.

Performance Making Lab with awarding-winning Pony Cam performance collective happens over four days, Monday to Thursday, January 15-18, with a showing on Thursday 6-7pm.

Award-winning theatre collective Pony Cam is looking for a group of passionate young people to investigating site-specific

performance, game play, and immersive theatre, the lab will be a unique chance to learn from some of Australia’s most exciting young artists. This program will cover everything you need to know to make theatre in public space and respond to non-conventional performance spaces – including acting, writing, directing, and designing. Whether you’re super experienced, or just a bit curious – this project is for you.

Youth Creative Media Lab happens over three days, Wednesday to Friday, January 17-19.

This year, the Media Lab team will be collaborating with the Performance Lab team. It will be hands on and focused on documenting and commenting on the performance project, as it evolves in real time. Or favourite wordsmith and musician Eliza Hull will be on deck to guide participants through the world of sound, and local filmmaker Keiran Watson-Bonnice will show participants the basics of film and photography, followed by editing the footage.

DPO removal bid declined

The Minister for Planning has refused Macedon Ranges Shire Council's request to remove the Lancefield Development Plan Overlay that has caused headaches for landowners.

MRSC requested to remove the Development Plan Overlay Schedule 24 from the planning scheme in April in a bid to simplify development requirements for affected landowners.

In declining the request, the minister explained that the removal of DPO24 might give rise to potential risks associated with

land being developed in an uncoordinated manner and create further difficulties for residential development to take place.

Council's director of planning and environment, Rebecca Stockfeld, said the council was disappointed with the outcome.

"We have worked closely with impacted residents and listened to their concerns and frustrations with the current planning overlay,” she said.

“Council will continue to work with the affected landowners on future options for

development in the area.”

The minister acknowledged that DPO24 was introduced to provide certainty and guidance for landowners, and coordination and conformity of residential development in three development areas of Lancefield.

Its introduction occurred via a statutory process that included public exhibition, which provided an opportunity for interested parties to make submissions and to have their views considered by an independent planning panel.

U3A Castlemaine prospectus unveiled

The 2024 University of the Third Age (U3A) Castlemaine Class Prospectus has been officially launched.

U3A Castlemaine class coordinator Anna Macgowan said more than 60 classes would be available to U3A Castlemaine members in 2024, 18 of them being new offerings.

"The classes cover a diverse range of topics and range from one-off sessions to full year schedule," Anna said.

The 2024 Class Prospectus booklet is available online at u3acastlemaine.com, at the Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre at the historic Market Building, Castlemaine Library and in key points in surrounding townships.

U3A Castlemaine president Janet Cropley said membership and 2024 class enrolment was now open.

“There are no prerequisites, exams or graduations – just opportunities to learn a little more in the company of like-minded friends in non-threatening environments,” Janet said.

U3A Castlemaine is a volunteer-run local organisation of retired and semi-retired people who share their experiences, passions and expertise.

Most classes are available free of charge to U3A Castlemaine members.

Funds for regional sports clubs The state government’s new Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund with funding of up to $60 million is now open for clubs to apply.

The RCSIF is funded through the Regional Community Sport Development Fund and the All-Abilities Sport Fund and responds to regional communities that said new infrastructure and upgraded facilities were needed to keep local sport thriving.

Regional sporting clubs and community organisations are encouraged to work with their local council or Alpine Resorts Victoria to develop ideas and make their club accessible for generations to come.

The four streams cover a wider variety of upgrades to suit a range of clubs: • Up to $3 million available to develop or upgrade multi-sport indoor courts and aquatic facilities through the Indoor Stadium and Aquatic Facilities Stream • Grants up to $1 million available through the Community Facilities Stream to build or upgrade sports pavilions, sports lighting, play spaces and active recreation facilities • The Women and Girls Facilities Stream has grants of up to $1 million for new female friendly change rooms or sports courts to help level the playing field • For the first time there will be a dedicated All Abilities Infrastructure stream that will provide grants of up to $1 million to renovate existing facilities to ensure they are accessible for people with disability.

Grants of up to $50,000 are also available to help boost wider community participation at the upgraded facilities, in partnership with sporting organisations and local disability service providers.

The fund encourages regional clubs to design the facilities that matter to their local teams and community, with a focus on getting more people involved regardless of their age, gender, background or ability.

Rain hits cricket again

For the second Saturday in succession, widespread rain played havoc with scheduled Gisborne District Cricket Association matches. The first day of the two-day McIntyre Cup and Johnstone Shield 1sts and 2nds were all virtually ‘no play’).

It is anticipate these matches will now revert to one-day encounters this weekend, subject to confirmation.

Wet grounds are a real bugbear when it is supposed to be a summer sport. Matches where some play was possible included: Johnstone 2nds – Romsey 0/41 in 4.5 overs v Sunbury

Kangaroos, Rupertswood 169 v Broadford 1/49.

Jensen 2nds: Blackwood reached 8/95 in 24.3 overs at Wallan.

Club North: Malmsbury 5/207 (35 overs) Adrian Ogden 70, Leuder Podolinsky 52, Chris Ganim 42) v Wallan (game abandoned).

In women’s matches on Sunday, Kilmore scored 1/102 and restricted Gisborne to 1/95; Macedon 6/83c.c. (Amy Miles 31) lost to Darley 7/84 (Amber Smajila 3-10).

Kyneton wins IGA Shield

Croquet players from Kyneton and Castlemaine came together in Kyneton last week to contest their inaugural interclub match for the IGA Shield.

Eight players from each club battled it out in four rounds of doubles play.

While there were many close games, Kyneton always had the upper hand and won by a convincing 12 games to four margin, scoring 98 hoops to 74 for Castlemaine.

Best for Kyneton were Gweneth Byrne and Damien Hadfield who won all their four games, just scraping home 7-6 in their final game. All Kyneton pairs had at least one win.

For Castlemaine, Nigel Harland and Nick Quirk put up a valiant effort with three wins.

Bruce Prince from Kyneton IGA was on hand to present the trophy to the winning captain.

Kyneton Croquet Club captain Graham Smith congratulated all players on their efforts in what were trying weather conditions at times.

Castlemaine captain Steve Duffy said his club looked forward to inviting Kyneton for a rematch in autumn and promised to mount a much tougher challenge on their own lawns in Castlemaine.

Rams leave RDFNL

Western Rams Football Netball Club, formerly known as Rockbank, is leaving the Riddell League to play in the Western Region Football League next season.

WRFNL accepted the transfer request last Wednesday night, following a vote by Rams’ members in mid-October.

“The Rams and the RDFNL have had a strong working relationship and the league has put a lot of resources into the sustainability of the club over a long period of time, RDFNL chief executive Jordan Doyle said.

“With that said, given the club’s on-field battles in football and minimal netball prospects for 2024, the league was in full support of the move and the club leaves with the league’s best wishes.”

He pointed out the league has shown over the past three seasons that it can run a vibrant and sustainable nine- team senior competition.

“With the introduction of Kyneton FNC and the departure of Western Rams, the 2024 season shapes as one of the most even and exciting seasons for a long time,” Doyle said.

Plans and a memorandum of understanding are in place to soon move two more RDFNL clubs into senior ranks.

Gisborne Giants (2025) and Eynesbury (2027) are earmarked in the league’s future plans.

Creek bowlers celebrate

Campbells Creek Bowling Club members are on back on track following the October 2022 floods that impacted their facility, with the official launch of the club’s newly installed green last Wednesday.

The installation of the new synthetic green was made possible with the aid of a $45,000 grant from the state government’s Business and Community Sport Flood Recovery Grant, plus funds raised by the club through various events.

The new synthetic surface is competition standard and enables the club to cater for increasing demand and host more bowls throughout the year. It’s also a water save and requires less maintenance, improving reliability for players and encouraging greater participation in lawn bowls all year round.

The club can now build on its memberships, extend pennant competitions and host more intra and inter-club tournaments. CC Bowling Club member Helen said they were all very proud of the new green and they had been receiving many compliments and interest from prospective members.

Club president Barry Ellis said the recent floods had severely affected the green and covered it in mud.

“We cleaned up and were only left with four rinks – enough to get through the year,” Barry said.

“Tiger Turf did a great job laying the green in early October and then we were able to get the lining done.

“We’ve been rolling and grooming and watering and at the moment we have the green at an 11. With more work and foot traffic we’re hoping to get it to a 14 to 16, but for the time being we’re adjusting to the heavier green,” he said.

Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards acknowledged Mount Alexander Shire Council as a project partner committed to delivering the project.

“Campbells Creek is the bowls hub in the local area – locals deserve appropriate facilities they can be proud of,” Ms Edwards said.

“The new synthetic surface is a real boon for local bowls, providing the club the opportunity to welcome more players; and take their game to the next level.”

SP PORTS WRAP Impressive victory by Bay of Zea Macedon Ranges trainer Liam Howley was very pleased with the impressive win of threeyear-old Bay Of Zea at Geelong on Thursday.

The well bred filly led throughout to easily win the 1200m Jayco Motorhomes Maiden over 1200 metres.

It was Bay of Zea’s second race start, having previously run fourth on November 24 at Moonee Valley on debut.

Blaike McDougall had an armchair ride in front and the winning margin was 2.3 lengths over Sinepia.

The filly started as an $11 chance and was a Magic Millions sale purchase.

TRARALGON CUP WIN Winning form is good form was proven yet again on Sunday, when the Liam Howleytrained Station One took out the $70,000 Traralgon Cup, following up on his recent win in the Dunkeld Cup. Station One was again ridden by Alana Kelly and was perfectly positioned in the 1900m feature event, fighting on strongly to beat Starspangled Baby by 1.8 lengths.

Starting as a $5.50 chance, five-year-old Station One chalked up his fifth win for a very large group of owners, and took his earnings from 23 starts to $274,500.

This Thursday, December 14, the annual Christmas Party Race Day meeting is scheduled for Kyneton, with the local club keeping a keen eye on the weather forecast.

GOLF results CASTLEMAINE A field of 33 turned out for Saturday’s stableford, concurrent with the final round of the 4BBB Hero series.

Ron Jenkins (20) surged late to take the overall and B-grade prizes with 38 points, with Martin Cross (19) runner-up in both.

Mark Brackley (14) was the top A-grader, with 36 points, one clear of Norm Bellis.

In the 4BBB Bellis and Greg Crowe stole the show with a stellar 43 points, edging out Jenkins and Peter Stemp by one.

NTPs went to Martin Cross and Ross Bottomley, and James Vosti was the only player with multiple birdies.

Wayne Toohey clinched the 4BBB Hero series with an impressive 134 points.

Eligibility was based on the best three scores with three different partners.

GISBORNE The final round of the ironic Gisborne Golf Club Summer Cup was once again held in cold, wet and challenging conditions.

Dave Gundy had a Fundy Wundy trophy, and President Boustead showed everyone who’s boss and won A-grade.

Santa Claude Di Cianna took out Bgrade, and Summer Cup winner Gundy topped C-grade.

The ladies held their Christmas lunch on Wednesday and celebrated in true festive style.

The day began with a nine-hole competition, with 59 dressed in their Christmas finery in the field.

This was followed by a spectacular lunch, with raffles, snowflake earrings and a visit from a very entertaining Santa, who resembled Sharon Kemp.

Winner on the day was everyone who enjoyed such wonderful colourful celebrations.

KYNETON Steadily improving Jane Stanley is the winner of the Mavis Cribbes Trophy with an aggregate of 122 stableford points.

Deb Kohlman was runner-up on 112, with Julie Harris third on 111.

The final round was played last Tuesday, in conjunction with Breast Cancer Day.

In the day’s grade events, Harris (21) topped A-grade with 37 points on a countback from Kohlman.

Marg Scoble (28) took out B-grade with 35, on a countback from Beth Murray (25) on 28. Stanley (37) won C-grade with 35 points on a countback from Irene Kozicz (40).

The ladies raised $500 for the fight against Breast Cancer.

Ross Martin and Terry Gamble combined well to win Saturday’s American foursomes with 71-4.875-66.125 from Rachael Andrews and Noel Alldis 8819.125-68.875.

Wednesday stableford off white tees: Ross Martin (9) 40 points on a countback from Phillip.Barratt (18) and Tony Dibella (12).

Merilyn Hoysted (39) led in the ladies with 36 points, one ahead of Julie Harris (20).

LANCEFIELD The second round of the stableford championship took place on Saturday.

Although there was overnight rain, it cleared to allow play, but the adverse forecast obviously deterred some likely starters.

The day’s winner was Ken Murchison (27) with 37 points, on a countback from Glen Holland (17), with Ed Godek (14) third on 36.

After a break of five weeks, the ladies played the monthly medal event incorporating the second round of their championships last week.

Kaylene Cruise was a decisive winner with 104-27-69 from Lyn Murchison 10531-74 on a countback from Bev Beaumont 116-42-74.

Tuesday Legends: Brett McGrath 809-71 from Ed Godek 88-15-73 and Ross Farrar 89-16-73.

MOUNT MACEDON Golfers at The Mount have been vying for much-coveted Christmas hampers over the past week.

In a tight contest on Wednesday Mike Hoiles (15) took off the A-grade hamper with 41 points, on a countback from Isaac Golden (17).

Karl Pongracic (26) had 36 points to land the B-grade hamper ahead of Peter Watson (23).On a damp Saturday a smaller than usual field battled it out for three hampers.

Trevor Atkins (11) won A-grade with 36 points, the in-form Hoiles (14) had 41 in Bgrade, and C-grade went to Luke Robinson (25) with 29 points.

ROMSEY The final of the John Laing singles knockout between Davie Kenney and Mal Mottram turned into an epic contest on Saturday.

The lead seesawed and after 18 holes scores were tied.

A further four holes failed to break the impasse and water on the greens led to the course being declared unplayable.

They will resume this Saturday all square. Good luck to both.

A small field participated in the daily par event.

Dylan Harris (7) handled the increasing rain well to finish +1, with Scott Williams (16) square.

TRENTHAM The annual Trentham Plate event earlier this month attracted teams from Trentham and nine visiting clubs.

It was home course knowledge to the fore with the winners being John Smithwick (15), Simon Ovenden (2), Alex. Evered (16) and Alison Bourchers (16) having 108 points (best three scores to count).

Runners-up on 107 were Nathan Hanson (11), Colin Wilson (11), Elaine Hanson (26) and Julie Hanson (22) with 107.

The four-ball stableford last Saturday resulted in a victory for Cameron McDonald and Adam Moustafa (22) with an excellent 48 points.

Rob Loxton (32), Graham Wright (18), James Coyle (5) and Joe Starcevic (3) were runners-up with 44 points.

WOODEND It’s great to have more local women getting into golf at Woodend, as evidenced by the turnout at last Tuesday twilight sessions.

There were also 23 in the field for the men’s midweek stableford, and it was the

irrepressible Eric 'The Viking' Vosbergen (11) who took the spoils with 38 points.

Barry Palmer (31) and Ian Gilmour (29) were next best with 37.

Rainy conditions kept numbers down for the random draw Ambrose teams event on Saturday.

The winners with an excellent 55.333 total were Matthew Kivimets (13), Matt Long (11) and Sam Akr (11).

Runners-up were Dennis Barker (12), Murray Fraser (17) and Glen Wright (5).

This Saturday sees the monthly medal rescheduled after the washout on December 2.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR With a couple of events to go, Woodend’s Barney Hearnden has a tight grip on the Dalhousie men’s Player of the Year title.

Hearnden has 27 points, with Cameron Pascoe (Hidden Valley) and Graham Hogg (Broadford) equal second on 17 points.

The Dalhousie women’s Player of the Year for 2023 has been shared.

Mary Campbell (Broadford) and Helen Howard (Marysville finished with 24 points, two clear of Darlene Baker (Romsey) and Glenda Woods (Seymour).

This is the third time Campbell has won Player of the Year.

Kate’s feat of endurance

Well done: Hawks’ president Paul Podbury congratulates head trainer Glenn Palmer on his life membership.

New life member Woodend-Hesket Football Netball Club’s head trainer Glenn Palmer has been unanimously elected as the club’s latest life member.

At the club’s annual meeting on Wednesday evening Palmer was praised for his expertise and dedicated service over the past 15 years.

A paramedic by profession, Palmer has helped many Hawks’ players with injury problems, some minor, some

serious, over the years.

Club president Paul Podbury said he could personally vouch for the head trainer’s abilities, briefly referring to the time he sustained a ruptured kidney back in 2016.

Palmer’s meticulous approach preparing for Saturday matches was a fine example.

The Hawks’ committee had unanimously endorsed the approach to have the head trainer installed as a life member.

Woodend ultra-marathon runner Kate MacMunn has completed the Great Southern Endurance Run as the fastest female in the 100 mile (162km) event.

The midwife and mother of three completed the Harrietville run in 36:19:06 and placed fourth overall in an international field last month.

“I wanted to see how far this body can go. Human endurance is fascinating,” she said.

“It’s absolutely stunning country up there, surely there is no better way to explore it.”

GSER is described as one of the most rugged and picturesque mountain trail runs in Australia.

Starting and finishing in the small mountain village of Harrietville, runners venture into the mountains, summiting peaks, and experience sections of the iconic Australian Alps Walking Track within the Victorian Alpine National Park.

Participants drink and eat on the run, fuelled at points along the course. They run through the night on walking tracks climbing 10,600 metres in elevation.

This ultra-marathon, while a profound test of physical endurance, was primarily a test of mental fortitude of which Kate is deeply proud. She finished the last 20km section with her brother Tom by her side.

Kate has been training for six months leading up to the event, completing 90-140kms per week. A team of fellow female runners have helped build motivation and morale.

She said her family has also played a huge role through its support.

Hawks had ‘outstanding year’ Woodend-Hesket Football Netball Club leadership has described 2023 as an outstanding year and one that everyone involved with the club should be proud of.

Joint presidents Anne-Louise Lindner and Paul Podbury addressed the annual meeting last month, and their message to all was to build on the success of 2023 and see how far the club can go in 2024.

“The future is bright at the Nest,” was the assurance given after a summation of activities from the past 12 months was presented.

On the playing field, six of the eight teams played finals – a record for the club.

The club is extremely proud of all the players, coaches, assistants and team managers who worked so hard to get teams into the finals, as well as getting teams onto the oval and courts each week.

History was made when the A-grade netballers – led by playing coach Meg Grbac – won the A-grade premiership, beating Riddell in extra time before a huge crowd. Ty Coppinger, coach this coming season, was best on court.

Grbac was wished well as she heads interstate, and all the team members were commended on their success.

For the first time since 2007, the senior football team played in a grand final, but found Diggers Rest too strong.

Playing coach Josh Pound and all the team were congratulated, with Pound wished well as he moves on from the Hawks in 2024.

The Reserves and Under 19s also played finals, with some outstanding young talent at the club.

The presidents’ report covered the formation of the first women’s football team, a very young side that played finals.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Woodend-Hesket excelled at the league’s presentation night, with Dan Toman winning the Bowen Medal and Ty Coppinger jointly winning her second Ryan Medal.

Mariam Habib won the best and fairest for senior women’s football, and Pound and Grbac were coaches of the year.

The Woodend-Hesket Club finished runner-up in Club of the Year.

Off the field, several very successful social events were held and all involved were thanked for their organisational efforts.

Woodend-Hesket’s history-making 2023 A-grade premiership team – one of the great highlights for the Hawks.

The annual report stated the club could not function without the tireless work of volunteers, whether it be on game day, Thursday nights, or behind the scenes.

Heartfelt thanks also went to sponsors, specially the major sponsors, who provide the financial support necessary to provide the best possible support for players.

Special thanks went to Darryl and Kath Bourke who have retired from their roles, leaving a lasting legacy.

The strength, compassion and love built up at the club was evident towards the season when tragedy struck in the form of the sudden deaths of Harrison Duff and Garry Hewitt.

“These events truly rocked our club but also demonstrated the important role we play in the community and how we can and must wrap our arms around those who need care and support,” it was stated.

All the committee members were thanked: “Sharing the load truly makes a difference and we greatly appreciate your support this year”.

Finally, it was acknowledged the club simply would not function without members and supporters.

A comprehensive financial report was presented, showing the club operated at a profit of over $15,000 for the season, with significant increases in both revenue and expenditure.

EXECUTIVE MEMBERS Life member Paul Podbury was elected unopposed for another term as president, with Rupert Miranda vicepresident.

Andrew Makin is again secretary, while the treasurer’s position is yet to be filled.

Andy Wilson continues as football manager, and Kellie Duff is again netball coordinator.

Several committee members will back up the executive.

While Anne-Louise Lindner stepped down as joint president she will be involved with the Hawks behind the scenes.

Kyneton’s Ron Cole volunteer of the year

Kyneton District Soccer Club’s Ron Cole has been named Football Victoria’s Male Volunteer of the Year for 2023.

The award recognises individuals who have selflessly dedicated their time and efforts to not only grow and develop the sport – but breathe life into communities.

The award was presented at Football Victoria’s Community Awards luncheon.

Cole said if you asked his family, the Kyneton club “means everything to him”.

“When you spend a lot of time in an organisation, you meet a lot of people and make life-long friends who become part of your life,” he explained.

“It is fantastic recognition for not only me, but all the volunteers within the club. They put in a tremendous amount of time and I am just the lucky one who got the award.”

A long-time player with Kyneton, Cole has held every position

in the club across more than four decades, from president, treasurer and secretary. He even coached the senior women’s side in 2023.

“From my time at the club, a personal highlight would have to be winning the Championship as coach of our senior women’s side this season, and watching all the kids come through from the junior ranks to the senior sides,” he said.

Cole has served multiple stints as club president, and currently also sits as vice-president of the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League, leading mental health initiatives, cultural sensitivity training, and undertaking the Change Maker program.

Under his leadership at Kyneton, female participation has grown by more than 650 per cent at the club across the past decade, now representing 45 per cent overall participation of the club’s 600 strong membership base.

His commitment as a volunteer has also seen successful advocacy

with local, state and federal government to unlock investment in pitch, lighting and facility infrastructure at Barkly Square.

On November 24 the official opening of the major upgrade at Barkly Square took place, and this was mostly due to his passion to create a welcoming family environment where everyone can come together through football.

Ron’s legacy is one of selfless dedication, putting every player, parent and member above himself – a devotion to the game that has left an incredible mark on thousands of people.

MiniRoos Centre of the Year At the same Football Victoria presentation luncheon, Kyneton was proclaimed MiniRoos Centre of the Year.

This award recognises the decision to move the MiniRoos kick-off program to the summer season.

The success was extraordinary, with a surge in participants from 30 to 150 in the past year.

Nothing seems to be too big a hurdle for 17-year-old Kisha Monleon to tackle, and lawn bowls may well be the sport where she really makes her mark.

Multi-skilled in such activities as basketball, volleyball, women’s football, gymnastics and ballet, Kisha made a very favourable impression when she played for Kyneton’s division 3 pennant bowls side again Lancefield on Saturday.

Rain eventually washed out the match, but there was general agreement Kisha had shown more than enough to think she could elevate to a higher level ... if she decides to take up the challenge.

The name ‘Mathison’ has been associated with bowls at Kyneton for generations, and it was highly credentialed Anthony Mathison who very recently informed Kisha she was to going to play pennant as she was now a club member.

Kisha’s brother, Cameron Mathison, turns nine this week and could even follow in her footsteps at some stage.

There’s seems no doubt Kisha’s had some valuable encouragement about bowls from Anthony and his father, Allan, still going strong in the top division with a milestone 80 years not too distant.

The Mathison duo attended Kyneton High School, where Kisha will be a vice-captain in 2024.

Using orange-coloured Aero 2.5 size bowls, Kisha played as a leader and a smooth delivery soon had her bowls in the count in what was only her third-ever teams’ appearance.

COMPETITIVE SPIRIT I had the chance to speak to Kisha after the wash-out, and she said she enjoyed playing on grass rather than synthetic surfaces.

“I also like playing singles where I have four bowls ... it’s good fun and I’m learning as I go.”

“I’d love to be able to beat him, I have (in practise) a couple of times.”

Kisha said very few students at Kyneton High played bowls, and she would like to see more have a go.

And no surprise, she has been told all about Chloe Stewart’s meteoric rise from being a very, very young player at Kyneton going on to champion status, representing Australia and securing a bowlsorientated career at Tweed Heads.

Kisha said at this stage she had ambitions to eventually become a dermatologist, even though it took

about 13 years to get to the top.

Obviously talented in various fields, Kisha said she had no trouble mixing her academic and sporting interests.

She played with Bendigo Pioneers and a Kyneton youth side in football last season, and now plays basketball at Bendigo and Kyneton, and volleyball at Riddells Creek.

Bowls is an across-generations sport, and Kisha said Kyneton players had given her plenty of encouragement.

Lancefield skipper Keith Webb also commended her after the game, suggesting she should certainly continue with bowls.

After 11 home and away rounds, Kyneton has taken over top spot on the division one Highlands pennant bowls ladder.

Kyneton secured a vital six-shot victory over Kilmore on Saturday when three of the scheduled four division one matches were able to be completed despite rain interruptions.

The only top division washout occurred at Gisborne, with the match against Lancefield called off and points shared.

At Kilmore, the home side tried hard to match Kyneton but a 16-shot advantage by Allan Mathison’s rink was decisive.

Mathison had some special praise for 17-year-old leader Howard Drinnan, who continues to improve steadily after being promoted.

Daniel Noonan won well for Kilmore, and Kyneton’s Neil Jamieson edged out Matt McMaster by a shot in the 69-63 victory, which may well mean Kyneton ends up playing finals.

As expected, Kyneton Golf eclipsed the Diggers Rest visitors by a substantial overall margin, Ray Wilkinson continuing as skipper with Peter Linehan as his third.

Broadford made life tough for Trentham with a 29-shot victory.

Bob Dobinson was again in good form and prevented a white wash.

Romsey had the bye and tackle Gisborne this Saturday.

Other matches are Trentham v Kyneton, Lancefield v Kilmore, and Broadford v Kyneton Golf.

Current ladder: Kyneton 113 points, Romsey 103, Kyneton Golf 101, Kilmore 96, Broadford 91, Lancefield 51, Trentham 42, Diggers Rest 25.

In division 2, all four scheduled matches fell foul of the wet weather.

There was only one match completed in division 3.
