Kyneton District Soccer Club wants to be the first Victorian club to reach equal numbers of male and female players and a new initiative could see them achieve that.

The club last week introduced a GO Soccer Mums program – an initiative of Football Victoria supported by VicHealth – which is a female-only social football program with no experience necessary.

GO Soccer Mums participants have fun, meet new people and learn basic football skills in a social, judgementfree environment.

Celebrating the launch last Friday at the Kyneton Showgrounds as part of VicHealth’s This Girl Can Week, club president Ron Cole spoke of the club’s efforts to boost female participation.

“The club is excited to be part of the This Girl Can

program and introduce the GO Soccer Mums program, and piggybacking off the success of the Matildas has been absolutely fantastic,” Mr Cole said.

“We’ve grown our numbers to well over 500 and heading towards 600 in total, and of that we’ve got 45 per cent female participation and we’re really pushing that to get to 50/50.

“We want to be the first club in Victoria to do that.”

GO Soccer Mums facilitator Lenka Thompson said 23 women had registered for the program and she was excited to facilitate a program that allowed women to take time out for themselves.

“As we get older, it’s important that we still look after ourselves, maintain our health and wellbeing and keep physically active,” Ms Thompson said.

“Being with other people going through the same things that you are creates a safe and inclusive environment while

The 2023 Castlemaine State Festival was the 24th edition of the town’s unique multi-arts showcase, which features diverse and high-quality arts for the benefit of regional audiences and economies.

Operating in a post-Covid and economically unstable environment has proven challenging, however, and CSF is currently facing financial uncertainty. This is reflective of challenges and trends across festivals and arts organisations nationally.

The CSF team has also recognised areas for review and renewal and has commissioned an independent report to support its work towards a stable future for this much-loved and celebrated festival.

Acting CEO and artistic director, Krista Horbatiuk, said what remained strong and was encouraging for the team was the breadth of support from the community.

"But with a substantial increase in the cost of living and an average of 40 per cent escalation in expenditure projections that Australian festivals are experiencing, we need to do more fundraising than ever,” Ms Horbatiuk said.

CSF is calling for further support from anyone who has enjoyed and appreciated the festival over its almost 50 years, and anyone who would like to be involved in shaping its future!

The festival was founded off the back of the extraordinary generosity and vision of its founding patron, the late Berek Segan AM OBE, and his wife the late Marysia Segan, and has enjoyed significant support from numerous generous contributors over the years.

Ms Horbatiuk said the CSF Board and management had been working hard over the past five months to develop strategies for expanding their supporter base and to ensure strong engagement with the community in the planning of the 25th anniver-

Referendum fails

On Saturday, Australians were asked to vote in the referendum known as 'The Voice'.

They were asked the question: A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?

Nationally 60.59 per cent of voters were opposed to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. In Victoria 55.01 per cent voted against the proposal. In Bendigo 60.17 per cent of residents voted no, in stark contrast with the residents of Melbourne where only 22.6 per cent against 'The Voice'.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan made a public statement following the referendum results, acknowledging the hurt of many First Nation's people.

"To First Nations people, we say this clearly: Victorians respect you and your culture.

We want a better future for you. We want a better future for your communities. We want a better future for your children and we want a better future for the generations to come," Ms Allan said.

"The Voice was intended to be a way to hear what First Nations people have to say, and to work to build a better future- together. We can all get behind that principle.

"Australian's have decided that the Commonwealth approach to change the Constitution – in this particular way – was not the right way to go..." the Premier said.

"We have a lot more to do of course – in health, education, employment, housing and justice.

"We'll keep working towards a stronger, fairer future for Aboriginal Victorians – led by, shaped by and driven by Aboriginal Victorians."

It’s not us

Gerard Scoble, a farmer and professional kangaroo shooter from Heathcote, has responded to Ian Slattery's comments published in the Express on October 3 stating that professional shooters would never shoot a roo in the stomach.

"Maybe it's Melbourne people coming up on the weekends, or farmers without training, but it is definitely not the professional 'roo shooters," Gerard said.

"There is a code of conduct in 'roo shooting. We are tested once a year to ensure our accuracy is up-to-date and Prime Safe conduct random audits.

"If we take an animal to sell that we have shot in the body, we will lose our licence. We each have our own tag and everything is recorded.

"We're not doing this for fun, we do this for a living. We have to take Tafe courses and undergo accuracy tests. It is very expensive to do the courses and get a vehicle harvest rack, usually costing up to $15,000," he said.

Gerard told the Express he gets paid $1.65 per kilo and on average he would shoot a load (of up to 42 carcasses) in four hours.

"There are usually around 150 shooters in Victoria, but that number has dropped as a number of us have been laid off until the new year after the freezer at the knackery in Seymour has failed, but there are still other knackery's operating in Victoria," Gerard said.

"We do use high-powered rifles, but we use thermal night vision and we do not go out if it's windy or pouring rain, we need to look after our gear."

Gerard, who has 14 years experience as a professional 'roo shooter across Victoria, explained that professional shooters only hunt at night and never on the back of a Ute and they either have drop windscreens or shoot from their windows.

"We only shoot when the 'roo is dead still, not on the run, we're not chasing them and we only take head shots," he said.

"The joeys are too small so the policy is euthanasia, because letting them go is cruel."

Program builds connection

A program designed to make a difference in the lives of those living with dementia is helping to build social connection and supports.

Treehouse4Two is a free three-day retreat for people diagnosed with dementia and their carers in the Macedon Ranges and Hepburn regions.

This government-funded initiative, modelled on HammondCare’s Staying at Home program, is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to live well at home for longer.

The program has a strong focus on wellbeing, self-care, independence and engagement in a supportive environment.

Treehouse programs manager Dora Mansbridge said the social connection made through the program in particular had been life-changing for some people.

"Carers have found it comforting to be among other carers who are having similar experiences," she said.

"Giving them that moment in time of peace, and also tools they can use, has been something people appreciate.

"It's also been valuable to those with dementia diagnosis feeling freedom to talk about their diagnosis without being judged and to engage with new people, doing different activities."

Some clients have used the program to rediscover past loves and unlock new ways to interact with the familiar.

The program began in September and has already held retreats at Macedon Ranges Hotel and Spa. The next couple of retreats will be at Glen Erin in Lancefield in October and November.

Those with a dementia diagnosis and carers may learn of the program through their GP, healthcare providers or through another means to contact Treehouse directly.

Castlemaine Secondary College's highly anticipated annual arts exhibition is set to be unveiled at the historic Castlemaine Market Building this Sunday.

The annual showcase this year aptly titled Aspire celebrates the wonderful talent of CSC students from budding year seven artists through to the major portfolio projects of year 12 Art Creative Practice, Media, Photography and Textiles students.

CSC teacher and artisans precinct manager, Pip De Bondt, said Aspire offered a vibrant insight into the creativity that unites the talents of students across the college.

CSC Year 12 Art Creative Practice student, Violet Kennedy, looks forward to sharing her bottle cap dress creation Killing Nature with the public.

"The Killing Nature; Bottle Cap Dress encapsulates my feelings about the current climate crisis. Made of melted milk bottle caps, fruit bag netting, bottle caps, product packaging, and an old mosquito net; the work is representative of my personal emotional response of fear, worry, alarm, and overwhelm when thinking about the climate crisis," Violet said.

"More specifically the artwork asks us to think about the damage climate change is having on nature; the dress has captured the smallest amount of household rubbish from one house, thus demonstrating the scale of waste."

The exhibition will be officially launched this Sunday October 22 at 11am. Community members are welcome to attend the launch, meet the local young artists and learn more about their inspiring works.

The exhibition will run until November 7. The Castlemaine Visitor Centre at the historic Market Building in Mostyn Street is open daily 9am-5pm.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council's annual street tree powerline pruning and maintenance program will begin in November.

The work affects trees on naturestrips and various council-owned properties in Kyneton and Gisborne to ensure all street trees in the area are not at risk of coming into contact with powerlines.

As part of the program, arborists inspect street trees and powerlines to ensure public safety and prevent electricity supply interruptions caused by overhanging vegetation near powerlines.

All powerline clearance vegetation works comply with the Electricity Safety Act which stipulate a minimum safe clearance between trees and power lines.

In rare cases, pruning for compliance may affect a tree's overall structure and health, requiring its removal and replacement.

The council is responsible for electric line clearance in the 'declared areas' of Gisborne and Kyneton. Powercor is responsible in the shire's remaining 'non-declared areas', except in Gisborne South, where Jemena is responsible.

Council's program will begin in November and be completed in December, weather permitting.

Health service awards finalist

Central Highlands Rural Health has been selected as a finalist in two categories in the 2023 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards – Excellence in Aged Care and Small Health Service of the Year.

The awards are a celebration of excellence in public healthcare and acknowledge the achievements of Victoria’s healthcare workers, volunteers, and public health services. Winners will be announced at the 17th Victorian Public Healthcare Awards Gala Night on November 16.

CHRH has been recognised in the Excellence in Aged Care category for our work in implementing the evidencebased Aged Friendly Health System 4Ms (what Matters, Mind, Medication, Mobility) approach across its three Residential Aged Care facilities.

This is a holistic approach to providing complex care and services for older people that improves their outcomes and experiences by prioritising what matters most to them.

The implementation of the 4Ms has resulted in better quality and safer care for people over 70 living in residential care managed by Central Highlands Rural Health.

The person-centred ethos and commitment to provide the best care to every person, every time, was also a driving force behind CHRH being recognised as a finalist in the Small Health Service of the Year award category.

All five campuses (Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford, Kyneton and Trentham) are fully accredited with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards for acute and community health and Rainbow Tick Standards.

Getting the carbon/nitrogen balance right Most of us know we need a blend of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich ingredients to make a good compost mix. The perfect compost ratio recommended by most compost sources is approx 30-parts carbon to onepart nitrogen.

But what is a carbon nitrogen ratio?

All living things have both carbon and nitrogen in them, just in different quantities.

Carbon is the basic building blocks for all living things. Anything that is, or has been, alive, has lots of carbon making up its structure, but there will also be nitrogen there too, often in the form of proteins. Things like meat scraps will have a very high nitrogen count, whereas wood has a very low nitrogen count, even though both are still made up primarily of carbon.

A carbon nitrogen ratio is a way of expressing this.

Every ingredient that goes into our compost pile will have its own carbon nitrogen ratio. The major project for Trentham is expected to be completed early next year ... with a name to be decided on tonight.

The community poll attracted 205 submissions, approximately 87 per cent from people within the Coliban Ward.

A report to tonight’s council meeting recommends the official name be ‘ The Mechanics Trentham’, a very slightly modified version of what the project group favoured.

“Given the unlimited number of options for the naming of the facility, there exists a risk that some members of the community will be dissatisfied with the facility name,” a report to tonight’s council meeting states.

“This has been mitigated to a degree by allowing the option of submitting a facility name other than the suggestions by the PAC.” The state government has contributed $3.5 million and the federal government $1.1 towards the project, which was costed at $6 million when the project launch announcement was made in mid-2022.

A decision will be made on the permanent official name for the Trentham Community Hub tonight (Tuesday).

Work on the multi-million development on the long term site of the town’s mechanics’ institute began in June 2022, with construction expected to be completed early next year.

What the new facility should be called has led to some prolonged differences of opinion among Trentham area residents.

Hepburn Shire Council worked with a six-member local project advisory group to encourage community members to make submissions on what they think the new building should be called.

The PAG provided two options to get the public thinking.

Dr. Bill Hall, earth systems scientist, evolutionary biologist, managing editor of Climate Sentinel News and ardent climate activist, will be the guest speaker at Kyneton U3A this Friday, October 20.

Hall will address the reality of our changing climate, exploring our possible and/or plausible future.

He will explain what can be done to maximise our chances for the best possible outcomes.

And how the ever-expanding technology, explosion, utilising exponential artificial intelligence, gives reason to be optimistic that we can actually solve the climate crisis before it is too late.

His case study will be the Libyan city of Derna, which suffered a rain apocalypse overnight on September 10 and 11 this year. Of the population of 110,000, 10,000 died and 20 per cent of the city was destroyed.

Bill says the climate crisis is still unreal to most people. This presentation will tell you about the reality, so you can think about it seriously and find out what you can do.

Friday@U3A happens at the Redbrick Hall in Yaldwyn Street West, on Fridays during school term time. Presentations are at 2pm and finish up with a cup of tea.

River revegetation boost

Year 12 Environmental Studies students with staff and Brendan and Paul from the Campaspe River and Land Management Group involved in the planting as part of the Landcare Grant.

Sacred Heart College Kyneton has received a welcome $4900 funding boost for its Campaspe River revegetation project.

Delivered through Landcare Australia’s Junior Landcare program and funded by the Victorian Government, the Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants provide young people with the opportunity to engage in hands-on biodiversity focused projects that encourage them to value and actively care for Victoria’s natural environment.

"Our school backs on to the Campaspe River and for many years we have been working to remove weeds and restore some form

of indigenous riparian strip," SHC principal Dr Darren Egberts said.

"There have been several efforts at spraying, cutting and grooming of woody weeds, followed by several rounds of plantings and follow up weed control to reduce competition from invasive introduced species.

"We are now ready to do another round of weed control, replanting, nest box placement and follow up weed control to reduce competition for new plantings."

Last Wednesday, Brendan and Paul from Campaspe River and Land Management Group, aided SHC students and staff in the

planting along the river.

Brendan also provided materials for the planting and donated several Australian anchor plants (Discaria pubescens), that are listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act and are rare in Victoria.

Year 11 and 12 Environmental Studies students were involved in planting across the morning as part of this revegetation project.

The college will oversee ongoing maintenance and weed control with an aim of reducing competition from introduced species, and the students will monitor the success of the planting in the months ahead.

Blacksmith to travel abroad Learn to

Kyneton blacksmith Peter Trott has been awarded a Churchill Fellowship for 2023 to travel abroad to study traditional hand tool manufacturing techniques.

Trott specialises in traditional woodworking hand tools. He has built his knowledge through years of teaching, both carving and windsor chair making, and now works solely on the manufacture of edged tools to support traditional trades.

The Churchill Fellowship will take him to the United States next April to train under some of the world's best tool makers, building knowledge of manufacturing techniques, design and hand tool ergonomics. and learning skills passed down through generations of makers.

"The project seeks to support a revival of the forgotten trades industry in Australia through the creation of traditional hand tools for Australian craft and furniture makers," Trott said.

"In a series of short residencies with leading American makers, I will study the manufacturing techniques of carving and furniture making hand tools.

"This knowledge will be to put into practice in my own regional Victorian workshop and taught to Australian students looking to move into traditional trades at the Centre for Rare and Forgotten Trades (CRAFT) in Ballarat.

"As a member of the Australian Knifemakers Guild and a regular exhibitor at the Lost Trades Fair, I will showcase these skills to the Australian public."

Trott has demonstrated his work throughout Australia exhibiting and running workshops in NSW and QLD. From 2015-2018 he ran the annual Woodland Festival of Green woodworking in the Macedon Ranges bringing teachers and makers from the USA to Australia to share their knowledge.

A passionate antique tool collector, Trott draws inspiration from historic tools and hopes to reignite the production of fine hand tools made in Australia.

With artisans and craftspeople seeking his work globally, Trott is in a strong position to lead the way.

“Bridge is a fantastic card game that challenges the mind and keeps us mentally active.

Bridge is played around the world, with clubs in the major cities and most regional centres. The Macedon Ranges Bridge Club attracts players from Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Macedon, Lancefield, Daylesford, Sunbury and all places in between.

Bridge is sometimes likened to chess with cards – it requires brainpower and logic but also partnership skills and perhaps a little luck. It is both social and challenging – so fun for all.

“It is a partnership game but you don’t need a partner to come to the lessons, as we can match you up with another learner,” Cate said.

“If you have played 500 or solo, bridge might be for you, but you do not have to have any card-playing experience to learn the game.”

Lancefield Romsey Lions Club's swap meet and vintage car show will return on October 29.

Limitations on ground use at the Romsey oval due sporting events means this year's swap and show will be held at the Clarkefield Oval for its space and ease of access.

This year is hoped to bigger and better than ever with plenty to browse such as car parts and typical swap meet items, but also the addition of art and craft stalls.

The vintage car show is expected to impress with about 200 vehicles to view and cash prizes up for grabs.

Some of the town's latest culinary creations have locals questioning why the famed Piper Street has gone a bit...shit.

Well, getting your attention was exactly the point.

Businesses behind these creations are doing so to raise funds for Team Artybox; a Kyneton entrant in the Shitbox Rally.

The rally is not a race but challenges participants and their cars, worth no more than $1500, on a seven-day drive across Australia to raise funds for the Cancer Council.

Team Artybox is Magali Gentric, director of contemporary art gallery Stockroom Kyneton, and Jason Waterhouse, sculptor and director of Sculpture Company.

The duo has already set off on their fundraising adventure on the roughest outback roads from Port Douglas to Adelaide in a $400 convertible Ford Capri. Jason has worked on the vehicle to get it on the road with the help of Kyneton Exhaust.

"It's a total crowd-pleaser and pretty ridiculous," Jason said.

"We got the dumbest car to do this in but we've had an epic adventure so far."

Sure to make an impression, the car has been totally transformed, now covered in Contemporary Artists art including the works of Kyneton artists Jud Winhurst and Melissa McFarlane, Castlemaine's Cameron Robins and Castlemaine Gaol's David Bromley.

Last Wednesday, Team Artybox had raised $10,350 towards their $15,000 target and is still collecting donations for the cause.

It was a breakfast pasty with baked beans, spinach, bacon, Irish breakfast sausage and potato."

The Shit Pasty was available for two weeks with proceeds going to Team Artybox. While the last pasty was served on Friday, Piper Street Food Co remains an active donation point for anyone wishing to contribute.

A connection between the health of blood vessels and the development of alzheimer’s disease has been discovered by researchers at The Centenary Institute, a world-leading independent medical research institute, closely affiliated to the University of Sydney and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The findings suggest that early interventions aimed at improving blood vessel health offer an avenue for the advancement of new treatments for alzheimers.

A progressive brain disorder, alzheimer’s disease causes memory loss, cognitive decline and behavioural changes that can seriously affect a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. The research study, published in the journal GeroScience, found the presence of senescent blood vessel cells in both alzheimers patients and mouse models of alzheimers. Senescent cells are aged cells that have lost their ability to divide and function properly.

Dr Ka Ka Ting, the lead author of the study and a researcher in the Centenary Institute’s Healthy Ageing Centre says that specific blood vessel cells, called endothelial and perivascular cells, play a crucial role in the forming of the blood-brain barrier, a shield guarding the brain against harmful substances.

“The blood-brain barrier serves as a

protective barrier, stopping inflammatory molecules and toxic substances from entering the brain via the bloodstream.

Issues can arise if the barrier becomes permeable, ‘leaking’ these toxins into the brain,” Dr Ting says.

Significantly, the researchers found in their study a notable increase in the number of senescent (non-functional) blood vessel cells, in and around the blood-brain barrier and linked with areas of leak during the development of Alzheimer’s in mouse models.

“We believe these non-functioning blood vessel cells weaken the barrier making it more susceptible to inflammatory and toxic substances, potentially exacerbating alzheimer’s symptoms as the disease advances,” Dr Ting says.

Based on their discoveries, the researchers believe that early intervention targeting blood vessel health could hold promise in alzheimer’s treatment. This could involve developing medications that specifically target senescent cells of the blood-brain barrier.

“Our study provides a new perspective on alzheimer’s and the intricate relationship with brain blood vessels, offering a promising new path for therapeutic approaches aimed at treating this disease,” Dr Ting says.

Philippines-born Kyneton resident, Trianne Garcia McKenna, was among 29 new citizens welcomed to the Macedon Ranges last Tuesday night at a citizenship ceremony at the Kyneton Town Hall.

Sustainability networking

A focus on sustainability education will be the theme for upcoming networking meetings hosted by Gisborne Montessori School for local teachers.

Participants will hear from several garden-themed speakers. These include Emma Stevens from Junior Landcare, Rebekah Ritchie and Rebecca Munnery about the school gardens (both have extensive experience in gardening, ecology, permaculture), The Seed Savers Network, and the Student Animal Care Team.

A tour of the school and the gardens is included. A light morning tea will be provided.

News Grants for events Community groups in the Macedon Ranges can now apply for a grant of up to $1000 to host Australia Day events.

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council grants support community groups to hold free events or acknowledgment ceremonies to mark January 26 in a way that is respectful of all community members.

While the council voted not to host its own traditional citizenship ceremony and awards ceremony on January 26 it will continue to offer support community events being hosted on this day through its grants program.

Events can be hosted any time between January 19 to February 2 to be eligible for grant money.

Applications for grants close on October 30.

Over the past 10 years, Kyneton on Riverside has transformed an empty patch of land into something extraordinary, a residential community thoughtfully designed to blend with the existing elegance of the old Kyneton township.

There has been a mindful contribution to enhancing the natural landscape and the biodiversity of fauna, flora and waterways in this area.

This works hand in hand with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Cool Changes program, which is designed to empower residents to address climate change in their local townships and surrounds through the creation of community led, collaboratively developed Community Climate Action Plans.

One project coming from the Cool Changes: Kyneton Action Plan is the creation of Kyneton Habitat Initiative.

Landscape architect Flynn Hart from Pollen says biodiversity was the focus for Kyneton on Riverside from the beginning.

Various points were considered for the planting process such as: linking with the species in the old Kyneton streetscapes, and the inclusion of a wide variety of plants (exotic, indigenous, climate and disease resistant, those which would be of benefit to the waterway and encourage pollinators, invertebrates and wildlife).

With the development of each stage, landscape architects are able to identify which species are thriving where and can continue to experiment by adding new plants.

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council has been kept up to date

with the Kyneton on Riverside landscaping process and on the maintenance required in the future. The DjaDja Wurrung people also had a voice on the project.

As part of the council’s Cool Changes program, the council held various workshops and community members were invited to create action groups to address the local impacts of climate change.

Justin Walsh, sustainability officer at MRSC, is assisting to help these projects grow, including the Kyneton Habitat Initiative, which aims to involve 50 households in Kyneton to improve the urban native biodiversity by planting native/indigenous plants in their gardens and verges.

Christine Cooney is a member of the initiative and is asking for expressions of interest for those residents who would like to diversify their gardens, including those living at Kyneton on Riverside.

The project is also seeking community members who have expertise to assist.

The Kyneton Habitat Initiative is an ongoing project and people will be able to get on board at any stage.

The most exciting thing is that we are getting people to consider having native and indigenous plants in their gardens to attract native wildlife and insects and develop habitats,” Chris said.

A vibrant and dynamic cultural experience

OKPS is an exciting Victorian government project to transform the old Kyneton Primary School into a creative community hub.

As an introduction to OKPS and sampler for its future life, Working Heritage in partnership with Creative Victoria are hosting an Early Activation Program on the Old Kyneton Primary School basketball courts in Baynton Street.

Beginning with a special performance on October 21, the program of events will be free, accessible to all, and be held from October 2023 through to March 2024. Two Saturdays each month, for everyone!

Taungurung Elder, Aunty Joanne, will open the program on Saturday with a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country, followed by a stunning collaborative performance by Amos Roach and the Yepenga Dancers.

Amos Roach, acclaimed didgeridoo player, musician, director and dancer presents a cycle of the Six Seasons of Gariwerd. Amos Roach directs and plays didgeridoo with the Murrundaya Yepengna Dancers and Orchestra performing the ancient songs and dances of the Gariwerd area. Songs and dances that speak of the birds, the foods and the Country within the contemporary setting of a small ensemble.

This is a musical and visual experience that will immerse you in a vibrant, dynamic cultural experience. Saturday, October 21, 11am -1pm.

Free for all the family, BYO chair, bean bag, cushion and join in warming the new basketball courts, a site for everyone.

An exciting new exhibition, Between the Pages, will launch at Dromkeen Homestead at Riddells Creek on November 12 featuring the illustrative work of four of Australia’s most loved, talented and highly acclaimed children’s picture-book creators.

Leigh Hobbs, Ann James, Gabrielle Wang and Mark Wilson will collaborate for the first time to bring this beautiful exhibition to Dromkeen. All four picture-book creators will be present on the day to sign books and talk about their work.

Senior editor from Windy Hollow Books, Cristina Pace, will also launch Mark Wilson’s brand new picture-book, Caroline, about the much-loved humanitarian worker Caroline Chisholm. Wilson's book mainly tells about the part of her life where she worked with suffragists in South Australia who went on to become the first women in the world to be able to vote.

Refreshments and a book signing to follow.

Also on the day at 2pm, Wilson will do a Draw Our Wild Creatures drawing workshop for young people (or young at heart), which will top off the day beautifully.

Macedon Ranges Mumma is celebrating Children’s Week this year by offering free downloadables on their website to add an extra depth to your family fun.

These include: a fresh air fun scavenger hunt; car trip scavenger hunt, treasure hunt clues for the home and backyard, time capsule questions; and colouring in pages with a Macedon Ranges theme.

This year’s Children Week’s theme is Children have the right to relax, play and take part in activities they enjoy and Macedon Ranges Mumma shares such a broad range of family fun activities in the area, that there will be something for every child, their talents and skills.

The great thing about the downloadables is you can print them out, or put them onto your child’s iPad or your phone, and by editing the image, you can reuse the downloadables again and again.

Kat Buttigieg (pictured) began Macedon Ranges Mumma five years ago and says, “I’m excited about sharing these new resources with our local community. I hope they enjoy using them as much as I enjoyed creating them.”

Creative Writing for Kids Is there a writer in your family? Kat Buttigieg is currently facilitating creative writing lessons after school in Gisborne for children aged 8-14 years old. The classes explore different text types and writing techniques, allow time to write, share their words if they would like, and receive constructive teacher feedback.

With a background in education, five years experience as a copywriter and a love of words, Kat is keen to encourage children to follow their writing dreams.

“I have a vivid memory of when my year four teacher returned a poem I wrote with warm praise and a request for me to read it out to our class,” Kat says.

“She then helped me enter it into my first writing competition.” This moment propelled Kat further into her creative writing pursuits and changed her life.

When Kat was growing up, creative writing lessons were not readily available. Even today, there is an obvious gap in the market for creative after school activities when compared with their sporting counterparts but naturally, there is a large amount of

children wanting to explore activities other than sports.

Kat is happy to offer a supportive environment to nurture young writers, encourage them to put their work out into the world, and embrace the idea of pursuing their version of writing success, whatever that may be.

Kat will run a writing competition next month for primary and secondary age students.

Celebrating 150 years

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Malmsbury Primary School. As part of this celebration, students and community members are getting involved in learning all about the history of Malmsbury and the school.

Throughout the term, students will be taking part in history walks around the community and with the support of long term community members, learning all about the rich history of the town in which they live.

Celebrating childhood

The joy of dance All children know the joy of dance from the moment they take their first wobbly steps and discover the sheer excitement of mobility and freedom of physical expression.

We appear to be hard-wired from birth to dance, to respond to natural movement and rhythms – so why send your child to a dance class at all? Over the Moon principal Edna Reinhardt has the answer.

“When you dance alongside other people, you open up a whole new dimension of possibilities,” Edna says.

Edna and her highly trained, enthusiastic staff have conducted dance and yoga classes in her Castlemaine studio for more than 30 years.

Some of her students are very young, so their classes are explorative, play-based, and filled with imagination.

Young children tend to operate in a companionable but not necessarily interactive way, and this is reflected in the class structure.

“But just think what they’re learning along the way!” Edna says.

“Important things like balance control, refining proprioception, predictive movement and spatial awareness. They’ll come to many of these things in time anyway, but in a class environment they are built into the activities.”

As the children grow, the range of classes broadens – and so do the benefits. Dance builds physical strength, flexibility and stamina.

Muscular and respiratory health are improved and exercise makes for strong bones. Perhaps most importantly for students entering awkward teenage years, it provides a social and emotional outlet that doesn’t need words to express itself.

“We endeavour to make every class a work of art. Beautiful music, a feeling for each student that we are invested in their well-being, a mutual striving to create something special. This is their safe place,” Edna says.

Collaborative choreography and community performances allow students to share what they have created on a number of occasions throughout the year, and family involvement is always welcomed.

Heritage destroyed Mark Dober, Castlemaine Several weeks ago I approached Mount Alexander Council, in person, to express my concerns about the destruction of a nineteenth century ruin in a forest clearing near Chewton. I followed up with an email to council and received a reply that council was making investigations.

The homestead ruin had been the subject of a dozen paintings I made at the site. It was perhaps the most impressive ruin of its kind in the shire, and its setting, surrounded by forest, contributed to its romantic allure. Here is one of my paintings to show what it looked like.

At that time the ruin was on land privately owned by a local family for 40 years, and with no barrier to public access. Recently the site was acquired, as private property, by the Nalderun Education Aboriginal Cooperative.

Council has reported to me that there was no heritage overlay on the property.

My concerns were passed on to Heritage Victoria.

My two questions to council – why did this destruction occur, and was council aware that this would happen – were not addressed in council's investigation. While signage on the gate to the cooperative notes "We are working in partnership with Mount Alexander Shire Council and Parks Victoria" it is not known if council had prior knowledge about the destruction of the historical site.

It is extremely regrettable that our nineteenth century heritage, which we should protect and value, can be torn down and disrespected in this cavalier manner.

Chris Beaumont, Lauriston For fear of copping a pile on, I think we all need to know a bit of local history that is not taught or spoken about much today.

Prior to the British and the rest of the world finally coming here and setting up with their sheep and cattle, and upsetting/ changing the Indigenous nomadic hunter/ gatherer way of life – we know that things could have been done better. They were tough times.

Less than 200 years ago, in the far northwest corner of the Macedon Ranges, the Dja Dja Wurrung people could not just cross the two rivers and wander into the area we now call Kyneton – why? Because a bitter feud with the Taungarung had gone on for some time, massacres happened, women were stolen, stone axes seized.

The Jaara people suffered greatly, payback was brutal.

Unfortunately it was a common story at the time.

Should descendants of the Taungarung and other warring tribes pay compensation of some sort for wrongs that happened years ago?

The same goes for all Australians with a bit of British, European or other ancestry.

Should they feel responsible or shame every day for crimes those countries committed a long time ago?

No, we need to remember and reflect, not only on the wrongs of the past but also the good that has happened and is still happening today.

That's why we need Australia Day. Two different people, worlds apart, but from the same race, the human race, finally came together on a journey and we are still on it.

While I congratulate Ian Braybrook on his decision to vote yes, I must disabuse him of the notion that 'The aboriginal way of life was obviously primitive' ('Accept. Acknowledge. Recognise', Opinions, October 10).

The inability of white society to recognise the immense sophistication of indigenous cultures not only here but world wide is what has led to the wholesale slaughter and dispossession of these cultures.

It has been us, not them, that have raped, pillaged, stolen land and children and still resist any compensation for our actions, even a voice to our parliament.

Who are the primitives?

There is not space enough here to describe in detail how wrong such views are but fortunately there are many published works from both white and indigenous scholars who point out very clearly just how primitive white views of indigenous cultures have been.

I appreciate what you wrote Ian, and your reflections that brought you to a ‘yes’ vote.

What I found jarring and sad was your assertion that ‘The Aboriginal way of life was obviously primitive’. You cant survive for 65,000 years without expert knowledge being passed down from generation to generation.

This knowledge was and is acquired through long-term observation of social, physical and spiritual elements. While western science passes on its insights with written findings, Aboriginal culture used oral traditions such as stories, dance and ceremonies for the same purpose.

They had/have expert knowledge of physics. Modern aircraft wings mirror the shape of a boomerang.

Aboriginal people knew how the tides were linked to the phases of the moon, while Italian scientist Galileo Galilei was still proclaiming, incorrectly, that the moon had nothing to do with tides.

How could they traverse this great continent without a compass?

By being expert astronomers and using the stars and oral maps.

Aboriginal people possessed ethno-botanical knowledge linked to specific places and environments.

They had intimate knowledge of bush medicine. They knew how to form and utilise new substances, for example quicklime (calcium oxide), pigments and ochres (iron oxide, charcoal), acid (pyroligneous acid), plaster (calcium sulphate), alkali salts (salts of potassium and sodium), beverages (ethanol), charcoal, and so on.

They were masters in animal and human tracking and analysing footprints, comparable to fingerprinting in forensic science today.

The old paradigm of ‘primitive natives’ is still so deeply ingrained in Australian society.

They were intelligent and sophisticated nations and one day, we will truly acknowledge this.

And just one more thing. You talk as if Aboriginal people are not in the room, or somewhere else. The Dja Dja Warrung are right here with us – talk with them, not about them.

A test of council's heritage seriousness David Hosking, Gisborne I am writing in response to the article on page 4 of last week's Midland Express ('Plans bound for VCAT').

The proposed centre is heritage protected and a test of council's heritage seriousness.

Prince Street is very busy already with the school at one end and shops at the other. I don't understand why the traffic survey was done on a day the school was closed. As it is, Prince Street is only wide enough for one lane if cars are parked on both sides. Making it one way would solve that problem.

Fisher Street and Hamilton Streets both have speed signs at Prince Street, which should be further up the hill, to slow traffic before the primary school and the shopping centre.

One tree was chopped down at the old Middy's site for parking and one at the new Middy's site to create a driveway.

I believe four more will go if the plans go ahead. That's six trees on that corner in a year. They are felled and mulched and then claimed to be diseased. I don't understand the council's hatred of shade trees as the world warms up.

An issue of practicality Maria Liew, Woodend Re: The letter from John Shaw ('Treat all law breakers equally', Opinions, October 3).

While I totally agree with Mr Shaw's sentiment regarding corporate misbehaviour, it is an issue of practicality.

Corporations are made up of shareholders, CEOs and boards of directors, thus they should all be held accountable equally.

As corporations are profit driven, then fines are the best punishments and hopefully some of it can recompensate those hurt by their actions.

Oversight should be the role of governments ensuring that there are laws in place that corporations must follow and ensuring that they are being followed.

Unfortunately, those hurt by corporate misbehaviour can only rely on the legal system to represent them, which only adds to further costs.

It was a Respectful ’No’ Dr Paul White, Kyneton We should be aggrieved in a fair democracy, in a dispersed country area, that our local paper did not publish my opinion for the ‘NO’ case last week.

There was not a single ‘NO’ opinion published last week in the crucial final week before the (horrible) Voice referendum … but there were about five pro-YES ones published.

The Respectful NO vote prevailed.

Thank goodness. Happily so.

We here genuinely love the Midland Express for its balance, all news, and sports, community coverage. But they got this one wrong!

What is an important insurance aspect to consider when it comes to Bushfire season.

Trees need votes

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has revealed the nine remarkable trees from across the state contending for the prestigious title of 2023 Victorian Tree of the Year.

The shortlist for this coveted award includes three finalists hailing from Melbourne and six from regional Victoria, with voting opening yesterday.

This year’s nominees boast several striking characteristics, such as the monterey pine at Blackwood, which has an impressive height of over 50 metres, and the river red gum in the Goldfields town of Guildford, estimated to be more than 500 years old.

National Trust of Australia (Victoria) CEO Simon Ambrose said the Victorian Tree of the Year contest aimed to raise awareness of the conservation of the state’s natural heritage and highlight the many benefits trees provide to our culture and way of life.

“The Victorian Tree of the Year is a fantastic opportunity for us to appreciate the natural wonders that surround us,” Mr Ambrose said.

“These trees provide their local communities with serenity and respite vand represent the diverse and awe-inspiring beauty of Victoria’s natural environment.

“They play a vital role in enriching our communities, providing solace and enhancing our quality of life.

“We encourage all Victorians to have their say in recognising these majestic members of our community.”

Prices Trend Upwards, Strong Beginning In Spring

Latest CoreLogic data showed property values continued their upward trend for the eighth consecutive month in September. Melbourne had its first annual increase in house prices in 2023, marking a significant milestone in the market's ongoing recovery, and this positive news obviously reverberates with improved demand in the region.

New listings in Melbourne have also surged, but strong demand from buyers saw prices continue to rise in September, the PropTrack Home Price Index showed.

The strong demand can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the pause in

interest rate increases, high jobs figures, overseas migration, and the rental crisis.

Though property listings have risen sharply since August, there was still an imbalance between supply and demand for certain properties. There are more buyers than sellers in the market for quality family homes that are either fully renovated or in move-in condition, with the added consideration that many people want to buy by the end of the year and settle before the start of the first school term in 2024.

SP PORTS WRAP Summer petanque season begins Clarke Cats’ head coach

Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club's new season started on October 2 with a small group of keen players gathering at the Woodend piste, located at the racecourse in Forest Street.

It was a delight to catch up with friends in the sunshine on a Monday afternoon, throw some boules and dust off the cobwebs after winter.

The summer season at Hanging Rock began on October 5.

That Thursday was cold and windy so a small eager group of 24 players joined up at the piste to play three games of petanque.

There was some good play with grinning winners amongst them.

The club finished up its opening night with a delicious barbecue put on by new committee members Mark and Cassie.

During the winter break there were many tournaments put on by various clubs throughout the

state. Many of the local members partake of these, to keep up their skills and join friends to get through those cold days.

On the first weekend of October, Ruth Giddings, Rod Gell, Peter Wells, Shirley Marshall and Jill Shaw travelled to Nagambie for their Open Triples Tournament. An eventful day with a few disappointed players, but that is petanque.

You win some games and you lose some games.

Last weekend was the Mount Macedon Tournament with four players from WHRPC, joining in. It was a competitive and enjoyable tournament with three members, Rohan Dickson, Shane Wellington and Darrelle Salathiel, playing in one team, and the other member, Shirley Marshall, joining a Mount Macedon team.

Last Thursday, the weather was again disappointing, but once again there were a few hardy

players willing to test the rain and ventured out to Hanging Rock for a few games of petanque and a delicious barbecue, put on by Louise.

It rained, the wind blew but then the sun came out.

With the weather now getting warmer the club hopes to find many more players joining in at the racecourse in Forest Street, Woodend, on a Monday afternoon at 2pm for a 2.30pm play.

If you cant make it by 2.30pm drop by anyway and view the game.

Also on a Thursday afternoon, play begins a bit later at Hanging Rock, for a 4.30pm start.

It truly is a delightful setting at Hanging Rock on a balmy Thursday afternoon with a few games of petanque, a glass of wine and a barbecue cooked by somebody else.

Top-flight long-term defender Katie Clarke (pictured) has been appointed as Macedon Football Netball Club’s head netball coach for the next three years.

Clarke has a stack of individual and team awards among her credentials, and began coaching over two decades ago.

For quite some years she has been renowned as one of the outstanding defenders in the Riddell League.

The chance to coach the Cats arose with Ciara Stewart leaving after a lengthy period in charge. Stewart was recently appointed Lancefield’s head coach for next season.

Congratulations have flooded in following the Cats’ announcement of Clarke’s appointment.

The club stated her experience and dynamic personality aligns perfectly with the direction is keen to take in 2024.

Macedon Junior Football Netball Club is looking to have teams in all junior grades of netball next season.

The club is overwhelmed in the level of support shown for U11, U13, U15 and 17s teams next season.

At the senior Cats’ recent presentation night, Clarke won the Climas Medal for the best A-grade netballer in 2023, with ace goalshooter Chloe Williams runner-up. Clarke also received the coaches award.

In B-grade, the Sylvia Christensen Medal went to Georgia Fearn, with Ash Coxhell runner-up.

Allira Egan was the best, and recipient of the coaches award, in C-grade. Joint runners-up were Tanayah Chamra, Nellie Wilson, and Amy Ilic.

The top player in the Under 19s was Abby Lambert,with Beth Barry runner-up.

Macedon fielded a women’s football team for the first time, and the dynamic Lilli Collins won the best and fairest (Collins Medal).

Ash Knight and Chek Stevens were joint runners-up, with Sarah Miles taking out the coaches award.

Kyneton Secondary College tries croquet

There were no croquet pennant matches this week, as many players were participating in a tournament at Quarry Hill in Bendigo. However, the courts at the Kyneton Croquet Club were kept very busy this week, with several groups of students from Kyneton Secondary College being introduced to the game as part of their physical education curriculum.

Over three different mornings, almost 50 students descended on the Kyneton courts. There they received a welcome from the club president, Graham Smith, before receiving some basic tuition and tips from other club members who had volunteered their time to help the students. After pairing off for actual doubles games, the students were introduced to the finer points of strategy, working with their partner to not only score hoops, but also to prevent the opposition from scoring. The students were surprised at how strategic the game is, but especially enjoyed knocking away the opposition when they were in a scoring position. Sweet revenge!

Many students showed a ready aptitude for the

game, and Graham Smith was so impressed by the skills shown that he has offered to set up a local tournament just for younger players if there is sufficient interest.

When asked, the students openly stated, “Croquet is a game for old people”, but as Graham Smith pointed out, many of the top players nationally are under 30 years of age, and started playing while still at school.

Croquet also ticks many boxes for the College – it’s unisex where strength is no advantage, it’s played outdoors providing moderate exercise, the students must work together as a team, and it’s mentally challenging. Their perspective definitely changed after their games.

Where time permitted, a player was selected from each game to have a try at 'closest to the centre peg'.

Accompanied by much whooping and cheering, the selected players tried to stop their ball closest to the centre peg. Bragging rights went to the girls!

The college groups will continue into next week also, subject to the weather and college schedules.

Kyneton’s senior football captain James Orr is expected to move on and play for Heathcote next season.

The big ruckman missed some games through injury this season, and Heathcote is reported to be keen to secure his services.

Heathcote was runner-up to Mt Pleasant in the HDFNL 2023 grand final.

Kyneton has relinquished the Bendigo League and has been cleared to play in the Riddell League in 2024.

Cup Day not far away The countdown is on to Kyneton Cup Day for 2023. Already considerable interest is being shown in special race day packages.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club staged its first meeting for the 2023-24 season last Thursday, in ideal conditions.

What a difference 12 months makes, as it was precisely to the day the course was severely flooded.

There were nine races conducted at Kyneton on Thursday, with training honours shared between the prominent Peter Moody – Catherine Coleman duo, and Danny O’Brien.

Moody-Coleman won Maiden races with Light Invasion and Red Vicar, and then with topweight River Novre in the fillies and mares race to conclude the meeting.

O’Brien’s winners were The Genius and Morpheus Bragi.

The next race meeting at Kyneton takes place on Tuesday, October 24.

Then it's full speed ahead to Kyneton Cup Day on Wednesday, November 8, the day after Melbourne Cup Day.

Thrillers – three alive to last end Bill West

The second round of Highlands area pennant bowls on Saturday saw three of the four division one matches decided on the very last end.

After a first round loss to Romsey, reigning premiers Kyneton Golf escaped from the likelihood of a shock loss by defeating Diggers Rest by a solitary shot.

Peter Linehan’s crew won by 18 shots to give Golf a buffer on a synthetic green where visiting sides can expect tough opposition.

At Lancefield, the Gisborne visitors established a big lead early, but found it whittled back in the second half. With ends running out, Gisborne skipper David Beardmore found himself seven shots down against Jeff Holmes, and calmly drew a decisive toucher with his last bowl.

Holmes won by 15 shots, and Keith Webb by two, but it was the 20 shots margin by Russell Walker, Ethan Higgins, Dean Ferraro and Alan Higgins (s) that enabled the visitors to win overall by three.

At Trentham, the home side had two winning rinks, but Broadford prevailed by five shots to head the ladder after two rounds.

The only one-sided division one match was at Kyneton, with the home side securing an all fours up 73-44 margin against Kilmore.

MACEDON HARD TO TOSS Visiting teams often find the going tough at Macedon, and such was the case in division two when Romsey could not find the answers. Andy Laing salvaged two points for the Redbacks, with the overall margin 12 shots.

On the new synthetic, Woodend went down by 11 shots to a Gisborne combination that had all fours up.

Kyneton Golf had no trouble in securing maximum points at home to Diggers Rest, and Kyneton won two rinks but still succumbed by 14 shots at Kilmore.

MASSIVE MARGIN Early favourites for the biggest winning margin of the season is the division three Gisborne (3) quartet of Kaye Atlas, Carol James, Graham Quaife and Thomas Woodlock (s). At home to Macedon, they chalked up a 54-6 victory on a day when the overall margin was 44 shots, Gisborne other side in this division having its colours lowered at Kilmore.

Lancefield did well to win by 24 shots at Kyneton, as the Leon Howlett and Geoff Stewart rinks had sizeable margins.

MOUNT MACEDON Saturday’s stableford competition saw B-grader Stephen Hohmann (25) win overall on a countback from Jeremy Clare (22), both with 37 points.

The A-grade winner was Peter Sinclair (9) with 35 points. Darren Mantynen (9) was a point behind.

The midweek par event as favoured by a gorgeous spring morning. John Dawson had the fairways in superb condition, and Ian Flannery had the greens running truly.

Tony Carter (14) was the A-grade winner with +4, from Joel Scanlon (13) +1.

Saurabh Singh (40) came in with +2 to top B-grade, from Keith Miles -2.

It was great to see Jenny S and Faye B out for a nine-hole hit, and completing their application for the forthcoming Jarrod Lyle Challenge on November 25.

ROMSEY A 4BBB aggregate with secret partners stimulated plenty of interest on Saturday.

Players did not know who their partner was until the round concluded. Several even ended up with two partners.

Eventual winners were Mitch Atlas (6)/ Dylan Harris (6) with 66 points, from Scott Williams (17)/Dylan Harris (6) on 63.

NTPs were Mick Squire (2) and Brad Klaaysen.

Perfect conditions prevailed for the Wednesday stroke event, incorporating the first qualifying round for the women’s singles knockout.

Elaine Scanlon was in fine form with 102-34-66, finishing ahead of Darlene Baker 90-19-71 and Luke Lyons 79-7-72.

TRENTHAM Trentham’s drawcard annual tournament is now in full swing, culminating with the men’s open this Sunday.

The first round of the women’s club championship took place on Saturday.

The day’s winner with a 72 nett was

Terri O’Callaghan, one clear of Linda Marchesi.

Caroline Johnston took out B-grade with a 73, on a countback from Veronica Mahar, while C-grade went to Carolyn Garvey with a 75.

The second and final round of the midweek championships took place last week.

Tim Fletcher returned 82-19-63 and easily won the championship with a nett 128.

The scratch title went to Robin Wilson with 68, 73 – 141.

WOODEND The 99th annual Woodend Open was held over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, attracting big fields each day.

Visitors arrived from many clubs across Victoria, with the course in spectacular condition thanks to the hard work of Grant, Ian and many volunteers.

On Friday, 35 players contested the John Dewar Cup, with Wayne Patterson shooting a winning 83-21-62. Well done, Patto.

The Bobby Mason Classic three-person Ambrose attracted 25 teams on Saturday.

Gary Richardson, Bruce Kent and Michael Bird won the classic with a cracking score of 54.1 nett.

On Sunday, more than 50 players headed out for the 27-hole Woodend Open.

Well done to Nick Cox on winning this year’s Open with the lowest gross score of 103, which included 68 off the stick on the first 18 holes in the morning. Local knowledge helps – Well done, Nick!

A massive thank-you to tournament secretary Mick Keating, as well as Nifty and Drew on doing such a fabulous job in ensuring the smooth running of such a big tournament over three days.

GOLF results CASTLEMAINE Peter Verlaan was an impressive winner of the stableford event on Saturday.

From his handicap of 17, Verlaan had to day’s best inward nine of 21 points to finish up edging out Wayne Toohey (19) by a point.

Last Thursday’s stableford went to Owen Scott (30) with 38 points.

GISBORNE Saturday’s par event attracted 154 men and 15 women.

Dean Besanko, in C-grade, had the day’s best score of +5 and took home a pineapple.

Other pineapple winners were Greg Burgmann with +1 in A-grade, and Bgrader John Samuel with +3.

Help, help me Rhonda Gilmore led in the ladies with a superb +6.

With two tee-off times operating again, 37 ladies took to the course for a stableford event.

Like a wolf howling at the nearest the pin on the 16th, Virginia Creece won the day with a very impressive 41 points.

Lynne Smith took out A-grade with 40 points, and Moon Gordon – who Virginia also howled at after Moon finished her lunch – won B-grade with 39 points.

KYNETON Jonah Harris is the top qualifier for Kyneton’s 2023 championship after rounds of 77 and 75.

Just three shots separated the next six qualifiers after the second round on Saturday.

The match play format now kicks in.

LANCEFIELD A very busy week with the DDGA Veterans switching to Lancefield when the Alexandra course was closed due to adverse conditions.

Kaylene Cruise excelled in the first of the ‘summer run’ events on Wednesday, taking out both the monthly medal and the Medal of Medallist title for 2022-23 with 102-29-73.

Florence Meyer was runner-up with 110-33-77 and Sandra Mathews 124-45-79 finished third.

Legends: Steve Draper 89-22-67 from John Leefe 91-17-74 and Wayne Mee 9621-75.

Veterans turned up early on Thursday but the rain came in and all but four pulled the pin with the comp called off at 11am.

Cyril Anderson (25) accumulated 32 points, with thanks going to those who remained to welcome the intrepid group in.

A close finish in Saturday’s stableford, with Matthew Darby (11) leading with 38 points, while runner-up Dale Schmidt was runner-up after a four-way countback.

Kelly slams 140 Bill West

Hard-hitting Gisborne opener Warren Kelly was the scene stealer in McIntyre Cup 1sts cricket on Saturday, slamming 140 runs from just 108 deliveries against Macedon.

Kelly hit 20 fours and two sixes at Gardiner Reserve, sharing an opening stand of 152 with Riley Vernon, who continued his good form with 53. Experienced recruit Rahul Singh contributed 39.

Gisborne rattled up a formidable 5/299 c.c. from 45 overs, with Brendan Scott claiming four wickets for the Cats.

In response, Macedon found the going tough after being promoted to the top grade, and was dismissed for 152.

KEY PARTNERSHIP A seventh-wicket partner between skipper Ben Way and all-rounder Aaron Paterson rescued Romsey at Gilbert Gordon Oval.

While opener Matt Milne contributed 37, the middle order failed to fire for the reigning premiers who looked shaky at 6/98.

As he has done so often, Way found a way and the home side faltered in the field as his partnership with Paterson grew.

They added 85 valuable runs before Paterson was eventually run out for 39. Way finished unbeaten on 56, with 8/200 c.c. leaving the match in the balance with the ground in perfect order for fast scoring.

Woodend’s opening batters Marcus Stewart 47 and Harry Lawson 38 gave the home side room for optimism and at one stage the tally was 1/107.

Romsey’s multi-pronged attack kept the pressure on, and Woodend’s middle order failed, then the last four

wickets fell cheaply.

All out for 175, Woodend head to Diggers Rest for a crucial third round match this Saturday.

The other McIntyre Cup 1sts winners were Sunbury United and Sunbury Kangaroos.

Romsey will be looking to make it three in a row at home to Rupertswood, Gisborne play United, and Macedon will be looking to open its account at home to Sunbury Kangaroos.

In McIntyre Cup 2nds, Macedon had a good win at home to Gisborne, with Ivan and Will Bobetic scoring half centuries for the Cats.

CENTURY AT TRENTHAM Trentham captain Harley Forgo played a brave innings which looked likely to bring his side victory at home against Melton South.

Requiring 196 for victory, Forgo was stumped for 109 (14 fours) and Trentham finished up with 6/190 at closure.

Hanging Rock’s two teams had convincing victories with the club’s number one side demolishing Romsey at ‘The Rock’ as Mackenzie Shanahan and Liam O’Meara scored half centuries.

In Club North, Hanging Rock’s 3/198 c.c. against Riddell was highlighted by 88 from Matt Shanahan ... then Riddell’s Travis Wadden took to the bowling to score an unbeaten 90 in Riddell’s tally of 9/122.

From a bowling perspective, Romsey’s Jake East collected 5-25 against Woodend in McIntyre Cup 2nds.

Woodend 2nds captain Brett Gardner reached an important milestone on Saturday, passing 8000 runs for the club.

He is fourth in the all-time run scorers for Woodend, with the top three being John Shaw with 10,105, Kevin Sullivan 9630 and Jim Godden 8457.

Rugby venue a real boost Bill West Rugby is definitely coming to the Macedon Ranges, with organisers thrilled to find a suitable venue for matches.

At a very positive information night held in Woodend last week, it was revealed that a ground at Gisborne Secondary College is likely to be utilised.

“It’s really awesome … this gives us some credibility and momentum,” meeting convenor Tim Sullivan said.

“Now that we have the ball rolling, things are happening fast.”

Rugby union enthusiasts from different parts of Macedon Ranges attended

the meeting at the Victoria Hotel.

Three put up their hands to become board members of the new sporting body.

Already there are at least 10 certain players, with an Under 13s side expected to be operating by February.

A NAME WANTED Who can come with an ideal name for the fledgling rugby club?

The group has been informally using the name ‘Macedon Rangers’ but other ideas for an identifiable name are welcome.

There is already a Macedon Rangers Soccer Club in the shire; Kyneton Soccer Club, formed in 1989, also uses the ‘Rangers’ name.

Possible names were tossed around at the Woodend gathering, with the convenor stating later that “we are open to ideas”.

Hanging Rock and possible indigenous names have been suggested.

The Australian rugby union side, recently eliminated from the World Cup, is known as the Wallabies.

Potential names can be forwarded to the Express, and they will be passed on.

The new club is also investigating whether there may be government help in getting rugby off the ground in this district.

Even if you have never played rugby before, you will be welcome.

Club’s opening day

Woodend Bowling Club’s opening day was held in sunny conditions earlier this month.

Club president Mike Dornau welcomed members and visitors, and provided a summary of major news involving the club.

Club champions Anne Dornau and Stephen Pickles respectively rolled the jack and sent down the first bowl of the season.

The annual fixture against residents of Woodend’s Gemlife is to be played on opening day in future, such was the interest generated on the day.

There were 38 players involved, and the bowling club retained the trophy by winning nine of the 10 games, with an overall margin of 37 shots.

Try croquet Are you looking for a fun new sport?

The Macedon Ranges Croquet Club is holding a Come and Try Day for junior players from 12 years old upwards. Croquet is a fast growing sport and is the next big hit. A challenging game where genders play alongside each other and age is no barrier. It is a no-impact sport providing excellent exercise. On the day we will have hotdogs to keep up the energy levels.

The Come and Try Day is on Saturday November 4 1-4pm at the Macedon Ranges courts in Dixon Field, Gisborne.

All ages, all abilities, all welcome.

Dominant displays in CDCA Castlemaine District Cricket Association senior sides kicked off the 2023-2024 season on Saturday with one day matches contested in A Grade and A Reserve. The highlights of the round were a century for Maiden Gully Lions A Reserve batsman Brodie Hogan with 104 against Castlemaine United, whilst Taradale A Reserve bowler Luke Cameron took 3-7 against Muckleford.

The B Grade competition is set to commence this Saturday October 21 with Heathcote joining the CDCA this season and Campbells Creek Colts making their return to senior cricket. C Grade (Under 16) sides also commence their 2023-2024 season this Saturday, whilst the Women's competition will begin this Friday evening October 20. The Castlemaine Cannons Country Basketball League side is off to a flyer having won their first two games of the 2023-2024 season.

The Cannons hosted their first home match for the year at the Castlemaine's War Memorial Stadium in McGrath Street, Wesley Hill laast Saturday night.

Castlemaine faced off against the Echuca Pirates winning 78 to 69 in Saturday's clash in front of their home crowd.

Chris Hogan top scored for Castlemaine with 17 points, Oliver Mayman netted 14 and Lloyd Needs 12.

The win follows the Cannons round one victory over Macedon at Macedon by 18 points.

In that match Trent Leech bagged 18 points, Jack White 16 points and Chris Hogan 15 points.

Cannons CBL player and coach Aidan Brohm said it was great to kick off the season with a couple of wins.

"We have a strong side and we have been touted as the team to beat this season so we hope to do the local region proud," he said.

This weekend the Cannons have a double header at home with the side to take on the Kyneton Tigers at the War Memorial Stadium at 5pm Saturday night, October 21, followed by the Maryborough Blazers at the same venue at 1pm Sunday October 22.

"We'd love to see big crowds there to cheer us on at each of our home matches," Aidan said.
