GREEN LIGHT A CONTROVERSIAL wind farm planned in the Strzelecki Ranges has been given the green light by the Planning Minister Richard Wynne for the project to go ahead. The Delburn Wind Farm has been approved to be built on HVP-owned plantation land and will span parts of the Coalville, Thorpdale, Darlimurla, Boolarra and Yinnar areas. Developer OSMI plans to build 33 wind turbines at a height of 250 metres generating enough energy to power 135,000 homes. The approval follows a 12-day public planning panel hearing that included OSMI technical specialists, government departments and community members.

However, the approval did not include the company’s plans for an associated battery energy storage system due to concerns around potential fire risks. OSMI had stated that the project team believed that “this is prudent given the number of battery fires that have occurred since the permit application was lodged”. Project partners Cubico Sustainable Investments welcomed the news and thanked the community for its input to the project. Cubico Australia head David Smith said the company had a strong desire to build positive relationships with surrounding communities. “We look forward to continuing to work with OSMI and the community as the project progresses into construction and operations,” Mr Smith said. OSMI executive director Peter Marriott said they

would be working through the details of the approval documents before providing further comments. The wind farm received rigorous local objection, with community concerns around fire, noise, impacts on flora and fauna and visual impacts. It comes as the Victorian Supreme Court ordered the operators of the Bald Hills Wind Farm to stop emitting noise at night and to pay damages to two impacted local residents. Objector group Strzelecki Community Alliance spokesperson Gabrielle Armstrong said she strongly disagreed with the minister’s decision and the group was seeking legal action over the approval.
