PETITION TABLED

NATIONALS Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath has tabled a Parliamentary petition calling on the Planning Minister to reverse his decision to approve the Hazelwood North battery recycling plant.

The Parliamentary petition had gained 2355 signatures since it was launched in January and was tabled on Tuesday.

It will now be re-opened to attract more signatures.

It comes as opponents to the project have kicked off a community fundraising campaign to seek advice from a Queen’s

Counsel to look at any legal avenues to stop the plant from going ahead.

Ms Bath said the community was determined to use all avenues to continue to pressuring the state government to reverse its decision on approving the lead acid battery recycling plant.

“Residents are highly concerned the ULAB recycling facility presents an unacceptable environmental risk, and by calling in the project, the Minister has run roughshod over due process,” Ms Bath said.

“Latrobe Valley residents have been left feeling abandoned and let down.”

Planning Minister Richard Wynne had stepped in to approve the planning application after it was rejected by Latrobe City Council last year, and was awaiting an upcoming VCAT hearing in April.

Ms Bath said she had also called on the state government to conduct an independent Environmental Effects Statements into the project.

“The Minister’s decision must be reversed, an independent EES undertaken and the community provided the opportunity to voice their concerns,” Ms Bath said.

Meanwhile, community group ALiVe

started a fundraiser on Tuesday to raise $20,000 to engage a QC to advise them on the likelihood stopping the project in the courts.

ALiVe group member Maggie Jones said the campaign had already raised $3000 within the first 24 hours.

Ms Jones said the group had spoken to a Melbourne-based solicitor who advised them to seek “urgent QC legal counsel”.

“We are fundraising to get this advice, and once we get it we can go back to the community with an informed decision,” Ms Jones said.

Gippy Water customers invited to get involved

GIPPSLAND Water is inviting customers to get involved in the development of their next Urban Water Strategy and Price Submission.

The Urban Water Strategy identifies what Gippsland Water needs to do to ensure water availability in the region for the next 50 years.

The Price Submission will include the water corporation’s standards of service over a fiveyear period, as well as the cost of delivering those services and the prices they intend to charge customers.

Both will be submitted in 2022.

Managing director Sarah Cumming said involving the community to understand customer priorities, interests and concerns is a crucial part of this work.

“We want to know what matters most to our customers so that we can reflect it in the actions we take and our plans for the future,” Ms Cumming said.

“We’ll be out and about over the coming weeks, asking people to share their ideas and experiences, so if you see us please take a minute to chat with us.

“We’ll also report back what we’ve heard from our community, and delve deeper into our customers’ values and expectations.”

Ms Cumming assured customers who aren’t approached for face-to-face feedback that there are many ways to get involved.

“Our customers will receive a form with their next bill that they can fill out and return to us; or they can participate online, or through our social media pages,” she said.

Virtual festival rated a hit

ABOUT 5500 music fans logged on to hear some tunes on the weekend when the Boolarra Folk Festival went virtual instead of being held as a live festival in the park.

The 19th annual festival was streamed online after organisers decided to cancel the traditional outdoor event last year due to coronavirus restrictions.

Boolarra Folk Festival committee member Carolyne Boothman said the online show was a “fabulous event” that was a credit to the performers and production team.

“Most of the musicians were amateurs and were made to feel relaxed so they could put on a fabulous show,” Ms Boothman said.

“It was a whole new challenge and it was fascinating to see the committee members step up to take on different roles.”

Ms Boothman said the festival committee was now forging ahead to plan next year’s 20th Boolarra Folk Festival.

“There is no way we could have held an outdoor event this year, last year we have 10,000 people turn up so we could never have held it in a COVIDSafe environment, it was too risky,” she said.

Tributes for Father Tom OBITUARY

RIBUTES have flowed for legendary T Trafalgar priest Father Tom O’Connell who died this week.

Father Tom served the Catholic Diocese of Sale for more than 50 years.

Born in Ireland in 1933, Father Tom was ordained at All Hallows College, Ireland before being sent to Australia in 1956.

His first appointment was to the parish of St Therese’s, Yallourn. Over the next five decades Father Tom ministered in many parishes across the diocese, including Morwell.

He became parish priest of St John’s Trafalgar in 1980, and served there until his retirement in 2007.

As parish priest, he conducted many sacraments for students of St Joseph’s Primary School Trafalgar - occasions he always counted as a highlight.

St Joseph’s Primary School principal Patricia Mulqueen said Father Tom would be sorely missed.

“Father Tom will be remembered for his warm and happy personality,” she said.

“As a priest he brought friendship, songs and lots of fun to our school.

He has been a truly loved member of our school, parish and in fact all of Trafalgar.

“We will always remember Father Tom with much love.”

Father Tom became a much-loved figure throughout his time in Trafalgar, and was known for his humility, sense

of humour and generosity of spirit.

His work was recognised in 2005 with Baw Baw Shire awarding him an Australia Day medal for commitment to the local community.

An avid sports lover, Father Tom played golf for many years and was a passionate St Kilda supporter.

He also watched many games at the Trafalgar Football-Netball Club, where he was number one ticket holder.

Father Tom’s rosary beads were often on hand when sport was concerned.

Bishop Greg Bennett of Sale paid tribute to Father Tom, saying his career stood as a shining example of service to the Catholic faith.

“Father Tom O’Connell’s death marks the end of the extraordinary ministry of those pioneering Irish clergy who, for generations, served the people of the Diocese of Sale,” he said.

“Father Tom will be fondly remembered for his priestly goodness and his generous pastoral heart. He was a respected brother priest who brought much joy, humour, song and friendship among the clergy of Sale.

“Father Tom’s faith in God was central to his life. Through his ministry he brought joy, hope and God’s love to others.”

Father Tom died peacefully on Sunday at Andrews House, Trafalgar.

He had 11 siblings, four of whom became nuns and another who followed in his brothers footsteps by entering the priesthood.

Latrobe City Council decided not to go ahead with a judicial review into the ministerial approval at a closed council meeting last month, but is continuing to oppose the project.

Latrobe City was unable to state the reasons why it went ahead with its decision not to support the review under the Local Government Act. Ms Jones said the community was now chasing legal advice after Latrobe City’s decision.

“I think there is a lot of anger and frustration in the community as there are a lot of other Victorian councils fighting in court for their communities,” she said.

“Why did Latrobe feel they could not do this for ours?” she said.

The state government approved the plant on the recommendation of a Development Facilitation Program after the project gained an EPA Works Approval.

The government stated the project was “shovel ready”, was consistent with relevant planning policy, and would provide an economic stimulus to the Latrobe Valley by recycling waste materials.

SUPPORTERS of the proposed Hazelwood North used lead acid battery recycling plant have launched a Facebook page to let people ask questions about the controversial development.

The Supporters of the Used Battery Recycling Plant Facebook page was launched on Tuesday by a local in favour of the project, which has been approved to be built on Fourth Road.

The page states that it welcomes everyone, and gives people an “opportunity to not only have their say, but to see the positive facts that are not being shown by the people in opposition”.

Page admin Claudio Marino said he put it up in collaboration with other project supporters, but stressed it had no input from the developer Chunxing Corporation.

“It’s not just for the supporters, it’s for people to know there is another side to what they are hearing, and we want people to know the facts,” Mr Marino said.

“There are supporters in Hazelwood North keeping their heads low as they don’t want backlash from their neighbours.”

The proposed ULAB garnered strong community opposition due to fears about potential lead emissions, with some opponents taking their concerns to the steps of state Parliament last month.

The project passed an EPA Works Approval but was knocked-back by Latrobe City Council last year, it was later give the green light by the Planning Minister Richard Wynne.

Mr Marino said he was backing the project which promises to deliver more than 50 local jobs and lure other investors to the region.

He said the plant had passed all its environmental assessments and would pose no threat to the local community.

Chunxing was also seeking expressions of interest from the public to join a community reference group, which Mr Marino said he had applied for.

“We hope to start building the Facebook page numbers and get it out there so people can ask questions, I think there is a growing trend that people are seeing there is another side,” Mr Marino said.

“This is a reassurance to the public there is a good side to this and we ant to engage with both parties what the whole project is all about. There is no animosity between the groups.”

Mr Marino said he prepared to tackle any trolls and was not afraid to hit the block button if any trouble broke out.

State of Emergency extended

VICTORIA’S State of Emergency has been extended for another nine months.

The state government gained the support of three crossbench MPs who voted in favour of the extension just before 11pm on Tuesday.

Votes from Greens leader Samantha Ratnam, Reason Party MP Fiona Patten and Andy Meddick from the Animal Justice Party gave the government 19 votes to 18 in the legislative council.

The bill had already passed the lower house.

The State of Emergency laws will be in place until mid-December and gives the Chief Health Officer power to enforce public health orders.

There were a couple of changes to the legislation, penalties for young people when fined for COVID breaches were halved.

The government also agreed to change the appeals process for people with detention orders, as recommended in the Victorian Ombudsman’s report into the lockdown of public housing tours in Melbourne.

“We haven’t taken this decision lightly, which is why we put the interests of all Victorians on the table in these negotiations and agreed to support these legislations on the proviso that these reforms that will impact and hopefully support disadvantaged communities,” Ms Ratnam told reporters.

“My understanding is that should the legislation be ready earlier, they would seek to implement it earlier.”

Leader of the opposition in the Upper House David Davis called the amendments a “sell out by the minor parties”.

Premier Daniel Andrews said “we all have to acknowledge that we still need rules to keep us open, to keep us safe”.

The State of Emergency was scheduled to end on March 16, but will now end on December 16.

HOLLIE Johnson has been named as one of the semi-finalist in the 7News Young Achiever Awards across the state.

The Churchill-based Gunaikurnai and Monero Ngarigo woman is a photographer, mentor to Indigenous students, co-founder of a new company, Deadly Wears, and taught Indigenous language at schools.

Ms Johnson, 28, was nominated in the Yarn Strong Sista Indigenous Achievement Award.

Ms Johnson has worked with over 200 students, supporting them in their studies to graduate through her work for the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) in her position as Gippsland program manager.

Ms Johnson said she was stoked to be able to do her work in Gippsland.

“I was a bit surprised to hear that I had been

named as a semi-finalist, especially after looking at the other people in my category,” she said.

“My cousin (Kim Lovegrove) who is a semi-finalist in the careers category, she just started a business and her first show coming up.

“I grew up here my whole life, this area is community and it’s my grandparents country and I am fortunate enough to work in community here.”

Ms Johnson said she has no plans to slow down, after starting a company with her cousin last year.

“Currently we are doing apparel which is called Deadly Wears, the main importance is caring for country, people wearing their ethics on their shirt, and putting First Nations people first,” she said.

“We had our second apparel shoot in Tyers las weekend and looking into doing a campaign for NAIDOC Week.

“We are hoping to do some mini films on country with people going back to the bushfires that have

occurred and getting their perspectives. We will have apparel with that, but I think we are more excited about the campaign side of doing the videos and getting people to get out on country, during COVID a lot of people struggled because that is so important to do for First Nations people.”

Ms Johnson also said that COVID has an impact on her work for AIME. “We ended up having our own TV channel during COVID ... we had people from all over the world watching, we had kids running the show, schools getting involved and we were pretty happy with that,” she said.

“In the first week of February this year we also launched Imagi-nation University. We support the university students that will now be running the program with Indigenous kids in high school.”

Winners will be announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday, April 16.

Man allegedly stabbed with a hunting knife in Traralgon

A MAN was allegedly stabbed with a hunting knife in Breed Street, Traralgon during the early morning of Sunday, February 28.

Police believe a group of men were arguing at the corner of Breed Street and Kay Street at 3.30am when an 18-year-old man produced a hunting knife and allegedly stabbed one of the men.

The injured man was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital with a wound on his left side, police said he is now in a stable condition.

Two unidentified men were allegedly seem running from the scene.

The 18-year-old was charged and bailed.

Emergency services called to suspicious Moe fire

EMERGENCY services were called to a grass fire burning on both sides of McDonald’s Track, Moe at 2.20pm on Sunday, February 28.

About 30 square metres of scrub was burning on either side of the road, no buildings or structures were alight.

The fires’ point of origin is unknown and police believe the fires were lit separately.

The investigation into the fire remains ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Latrobe CIU 5131 5000.

VICTORIA Police is undertaking the planning process to develop future service delivery model and are seeking feedback from the community to help police make Victoria a safer place.

VICTORIA Police will be out in force for Road Policing Operation Arid which runs from tomorrow through to Monday, March 8.

Speedsters and other drivers flouting the road rules have been put on notice ahead of the road policing blitz.

Operation Arid will be conducted by operational police in all police areas, using all available personnel from local Highway Patrol Units, General Duties Police members and other Police Units.

Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are excessive speed, driver distraction, restraint and seat belt non-compliance, fatigue and impaired driving.

Speed cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations.

VEC asked to consider Moe for a change of electorate

LATROBE City Council is asking the Victorian Electoral Commission to include Moe in the state seat of Morwell as part of an upcoming electoral boundary review.

The electoral division of Morwell includes the majority of Latrobe City except Moe, which sits within the neighbouring seat of Narracan, cut off along the Narracan Creek.

Latrobe City sent a submission to the VEC to include Moe in the District of Morwell to unify the municipality and ensure the town was equally represented within the same electorate.

It would mean the electoral boundaries would be closely aligned to the municipal boundaries of Latrobe City.

It would also help council apply for state government funding and support for projects.

Cr Brad Law outlined the issues at Latrobe City’s March ordinary council meeting on Monday, stating that Moe and Newborough were split along electoral boundaries.

“It’s frustrating for a lot of people as they didn’t realise they had to stay within their zone to vote, it doesn’t make sense to divide a town in two,” Cr Law said.

“It would make it so much easier for everyone to understand, and they would know who they were voting for.”

Victorian electoral boundaries must be adjusted after every second state election to take population growth into account and ensure that the number of electors in each division remained the same.

Any boundary changes will apply to the next state election in November next year.

However, Cr Dale Harriman said including Moe may come at the risk of losing another town in the boundary readjustments.

Cr Harriman said many other large regional municipalities such as Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo were divided up in electoral boundaries and were represented by multiple state MPs. Morwell is held by the Independent Member Russell Northe who narrowly won the 2018 state election on preferences from the Labor candidate Mark Richards.

Mr Northe acknowledged that including Moe in the seat may disadvantage him at the next election, as the town traditionally favoured Labor at the polls.

“When Newborough was included in the seat of Morwell, it was a disadvantage to me as it is a Labor stronghold and has been for some time, but this is not to say it always will be as things change,” Mr Northe said.

“If I contest again and Moe was included in the electorate, it would be a tough ask for myself to win on that basis.”

Buy Australian-made paper DARREN Chester has asked all Commonwealth departments and federal Ministers to buy Australian-made paper to support Latrobe Valley jobs at the Maryvale mill.

The Federal Member for Gippsland wrote to all the Ministers and government departments that have been using imported office paper, stating they should switch to Australian Paper.

The letter comes as a Senate hearing found the Commonwealth’s use of locally-made paper had slumped to 30 per cent in the first three months of this financial year.

“As we recover from the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, it is incredibly important that we support local businesses, particularly in regional Australia,” Mr Chester said.

“This is a very important Australian industry. It is a very important Gippsland industry.”

Mr Chester said he had been a long-term advocate for all government departments to buy more Australian-made copy paper and would continue to do so.

The pandemic had led to cross-border supply issues which meant there was an increase in sourcing imported paper, but Mr Chester said these were now resolved and he expected a return to Australian-made paper.

“I cannot understand how it could even be possible that paper imported to Australia from

Germany,Austria or Indonesia could compete with an Australian made product on price, quality or environmental credentials,” Mr Chester said.

“Opal Australian Paper is one of the largest private employers in the Latrobe Valley providing

more than 1000 local jobs and supporting the local economy.”

Union members at the Opal Australian Paper Maryvale mill have also been emailing senior federal Ministers as a part of a new CFMEU campaign Back Our Jobs-Buy Our Paper.

CFMEU manufacturing division national secretary Michael O’Connor wanted Prime Minister Scott Morrison to show some leadership by directing his Ministers and departments to support Aussie paper.

Mr O’Connor applauded the PM’s own department for having one of the strongest track records of sourcing Australian made paper.

“Buying Australian made paper instead of importing it all from Indonesia like many departments did last year supports jobs and is in line with community expectations,” Mr O’Connor said.

“We know that every ream of Australian made paper purchased supports Australian jobs and every ream imported from Indonesia damages Australian jobs.”

The Finance Department - which oversees government procurements - had previously stated that it was purchasing more Aussie-made copy paper now that supply issues between borders were rectified.

International borders to stay closed INTERNATIONAL borders will remain closed for at least another three months despite more than 40,000 Australians who remain stranded across the globe due to COVID-19.

The latest extension means Australia’s borders will have been closed to the world for 15 months.

Health Minister Greg Hunt earlier this week confirmed the three month extension to the existing emergency period would be granted following advice from the Australian Health Protection Principle Committee (AHPPC) and the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer, Professor Paul Kelly.

The plan stipulates the date for border reopening to June 17, 2021.

But there is a provision for Australia to reopen sooner if the border closure is no longer needed.

An early reopening of international travel relies on a swift rollout of vaccination programs and are proven to be effective against new and emerging variants.

The announcement follows desperate calls from Australian airport operators to kick-start the pandemic-stricken aviation sector.

Blood and plasma donations needed

THE Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an immediate appeal for people to donate blood or plasma.

The Traralgon Donor Centre needs 50 donors to book in throughout the next fortnight to cover the need. All blood and plasma types are needed, but in particular O-, A-, A+ and B- blood types are all running low.

Lifeblood executive director Cath Stone said elective surgery is driving the increase, as busy hospitals tackle a pandemic-driven backlog, alongside declining donor numbers.

“Hospital demand is up 7 per cent compared to this time last year and we have around 10,000 fewer people donating now than we saw at the peak of the pandemic,” Ms Stone said.

“We need more donors to roll up their sleeves to ensure fridges are well stocked. We have 22,000 extra appointments to fill during the next two weeks.”

“Even if you don’t know what blood type you have, we still need you - we need all blood types every day.

“31,000 donations are needed every week across

Australia to help patients in times of trauma, major surgery, cancer treatment, pregnancy and a host of other situations.

“As we continue to ride the wave of changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s essential that blood and plasma donations continue.”

CFA: Take it easy on the road

CFA is calling for drivers to be extra cautious on the roads, with more traffic expected over this Labour Day long weekend.

Deputy Chief Officer Specialist Services Garry Cook said motor vehicle collisions were the most common incident that CFA crews responded to during this same long weekend period last year.

“While CFA’s core service to the community is as a fire service, we often get called out to serious road trauma incidents as well,” DCO Cook said.

“More than 35 people have died on Victorian roads this year. Even one call-out to a crash is one too many, and we don’t want a repeat of last year’s long weekend.”

CFA has 21 dedicated Road Crash Rescue brigades across the state that work with partner agencies including VICSES, FRV, and VicPol, however DCO Cook said he hopes their services won’t be required.

“The devastating impacts of road trauma are felt by the families and communities involved long after emergency service personnel have left the scene,” he said.

“These incidents can also impact our members who attend.

“We know that most of these incidents can be avoided.

“Speed, driver fatigue, and distractions are just

some of the causes of major collisions, and they are all preventable.”

While many Victorians are making the most of their opportunities to hit the road, DCO Cook said it’s important to take care.

“It will be fantastic for Victorians to be out and about enjoying their long weekend, but we urge people to use sense and caution on the roads,” he said.

“Be aware of other road users, and let’s keep the number of road trauma incidents down this weekend.

“Keep yourself and your loved ones safe.”

Aged care report released

THE final report for the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety was handed down on Monday.

The report listed 148 recommendations after a two-year-long process that saw over 10,500 submissions and 600 witnesses.

The Australian Aged Care Collaboration called the final report a “critical watershed moment in Australia’s quest for a fair and just system”.

Leading Age Services Australia chief executive officer Sean Rooney and AACC spokesperson said the report cited appalling examples where individuals or aged care services had failed in their duties to

provide safe and quality care for older Australians.

“These failures are unacceptable, and we are deeply sorry for the harm they have caused,” he said.

“As a sector we are doing what we can to ensure these failures are not repeated.

“What Australia needs is a regulatory and funding model that recognizes older Australians’ fundamental human rights, whether they live in a communal residential aged care facility or are supported by a government-subsidised care package within their own home.

“That includes legislating the right to sufficient high quality and safe aged care and support in a way that binds both providers and government to safeguard this right.

“In addition, we suggest the government set out a two to three year schedule for releasing enough home care packages to clear the current 100,000 person queue, and ensure anyone who needs one can access one at the appropriate level of need.”

Mr Rooney also said the coronavirus pandemic “turned cracks in the system into chasms,” in the aged care system which Victorians saw first-hand.

“These have been the systems for years and after the pandemic, the results have been devastating,” he said.

“The Commission called for something that we have called for, for a long time, the total re-imagining of how aged care happens in Australia.”

Council and police will patrol Lake Narracan to ensure people are not camping or dumping rubbish along the foreshore, in addition to water safety, drink driving and anti-social behavior laws.

Boat users are reminded that speed limits apply on Lake Narracan - five knots within 50 metres of

the shore and 40 knots in other areas. A 0.05 blood alcohol limit applies to those over the age of 21 in charge of a boat, whether underway or at anchor.

People under 21 must have a 0.00 blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

No camping is permitted anywhere on the foreshore of Lake Narracan and visitors must take their rubbish with them.

“Lake Narracan is a great natural asset for people to enjoy and brings locals as well as people from far

andwide, so please don’t ruin it for others,” Latrobe City Council Mayor Sharon Gibson said yesterday.

“Take care on the water to ensure your own safety and that of others, and please follow the rules.”

Victoria Police will also be conducting increased patrols of Lake Narracan over the Easter long weekend.

Emergency evacuation point is on the agenda

LATROBE City Council wants the state government to get its skates on to finalise developing an emergency evacuation point in Morwell in the event of another catastrophe.

Cr Graeme Middlemiss put up a motion at Latrobe City’s Monday meeting chasing up the lack of progress on developing a community-based emergency plan for locals stuck in town in a disaster.

It comes after the government had formed a Morwell and Districts Community Recovery Committee in the wake of the 2014 Hazelwood mine fire.

The committee had recommended working with government emergency agencies to develop a fire refuge of last resort for Morwell and how to contact housebound people in a disaster.

Cr Middlemiss - who was appointed as a council representative on the committee - said Morwell was a unique town surrounded by two open cut coal mines, plantations and heavy industry.

He said police had blocked all exits from Morwell in the mine fire, and doors were being knocked encouraging those in the south to get out of town.

“But when the community recovery committee looked into this, they found quite a few homebound people were not contacted as they didn’t get to the door fast enough,” Cr Middlemiss said.

“We found a lot of elderly and people with disabilities stayed during the fire and were looked after by a neighbour.”

Cr Middlemiss said the committee decided Morwell needed a place of last resort and a list to check on the housebound- which he said could have come from the meals on wheels register.

However, he said the lack of response from the government was “insulting” and he wanted to know if it was following through with the plans.

“We need to be told, yes they are getting on with it, or no because of the following reasons.

And Geez, those reasons had better be good,” Cr Middlemiss said.

“Can we write to the Minister and kick this along?”

Cr Tracie Lund backed the motion, saying it was “way past time to complete this important strategy”.

“There are high levels of disadvantage, and many in our community don’t have cars to escape and rely on public transport or friends or family - if they have them,” Cr Lund said.

“This drove home some confronting realities.

One being significant hazmats surrounding Morwell and the need to improve strategies and plans to improve the community’s safety in future events.”

Valley one of six mental health priority locations THE Latrobe Valley was named as one of six mental health priority sites across the state, after a recommendation in the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

The new, local Adult and Older Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing Services were a key recommendation of the commission’s final report, released on Tuesday.

The state government yesterday announced the first six sites would be fast-tracked as part of a total of 60 planned for Victoria.

The sites will provide a ‘front door’ for people in the community to access mental health support including a range of therapies and expanded wellbeing treatment.

The first of these local services is planned to open from mid-2022, with all six of the initial services planned to open by the end of 2022.

Latrobe Valley has one of the highest rates of mental health presentations to emergency departments, including for self-harm and suicide attempts.

Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said the site will “ensure residents and communities across the Latrobe Valley get the care they need sooner and closer to home”.

Mental Health Minister James Merlino said that the announcement was the first step to implement the ambitious agenda set out in the final report.

“These new localised mental health services will provide better coverage and easier access to services for Victorians, not matter where they live,” he said.

“This is all about treating people early in the community, rather than too late in hospital.”

The Royal Commission report contains 65 recommendations that establish a blueprint to transform mental health support and care to make it accessible, flexible and responsive - free of stigma and discrimination.

The state government said it would implement every recommendation.

Reserve Bank LRH hosts free cancer information session keeps interest rates at 0.1% THE Reserve Bank of Australia has kept interest rates at 0.1 per cent.

Following its monthly board meeting on Tuesday, central bank governor Philip Lowe said the economic recovery is well underway and has been stronger than was earlier expected.

“The current monetary policy settings are continuing to help the economy by keeping financing costs very low, contributing to a lower exchange rate than otherwise, and supporting the supply of credit and household and business balance sheets,” Dr Lowe said in a statement.

He reiterated that the board will not increase the cash rate until inflation is sustainably within the two to three per cent target range, conditions it does not expect to be met until 2024 at the earliest.

Dr Lowe said housing credit growth for owneroccupier loans had picked up, but investor and business credit growth remained weak.

GIPPSLAND residents diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones will have access to a free cancer information session on March 29.

Cancer Council Victoria’s Managing Cancer program is run by local health professionals and will be held at Latrobe Regional Hospital.

Topics covered in the session will include: ■ Getting the most out of your healthcare team ■ Dealing with treatments and side effects ■ Learning how to relax and manage stress ■ Communicating with family, friends and colleagues ■ Information on important factors such as diet and exercise Cancer Council Victoria’s Head of Cancer

Information and Support Services Katherine Lane said more than 650 people took part in the program across Victoria in 2019.

“These practical sessions are run by experts in a relaxed and comfortable environment and have proven extremely beneficial for people with cancer, as well as those supporting them,” Ms Lane said.

“This is a unique opportunity for anyone with cancer, as well as their friends and family, to ask questions of a health professional outside of the hospital setting, while at the same time linking up with other people who are going through a similar experience.”

On average, 515 people are diagnosed with cancer in Latrobe City each year.

Ms Lane said the program had run for more than 20 years and was regularly conducted at hospitals and healthcare services throughout Victoria.

“Attendees continue to tell us that these sessions are a valuable and helpful resource for them,” she said.

One recent program participant said it gave them “a broader insight into cancer and the continuous work that is being done to eradicate it”.

Another said: “It was informative and it is good to be listened to, and to listen and learn.”

Dry February in the Latrobe Valley FEBRUARY is traditionally the driest month of the year in the Latrobe Valley and in 2021 the weather lived up to expectations.

The region received 9.6mm of rainfall for the month, well done on the average of 45.7mm.

But the figure surpasses our record lowest rainfall of 7.0mm in 1991.

The Valley’s mean maximum temperature for February was 25.2 degrees, 1.4 degrees below the average maximum for the month.

The Bureau of Meteorology says we may be in for a late shower today before mostly blue skies through to the weekend.

The mercury will climb from 19 degrees tomorrow through to 23 on Saturday and a high of 28 on Sunday.

A possible shower is predicted for Monday.

Reconstruction of local roads

WELLINGTON Shire Council will enter into a contract with Bairnsdale-based Whelans Group Investments for the reconstruction of about 3.7 kilometres of Toongabbie-Cowwarr and Weir Roads, Cowwarr.

While the roads are on the boundary with Latrobe City Council, the responsibility for maintenance is with Wellington Shire Council, but the costs for capital works are shared between the councils.

Agreement has been reached with Latrobe City on the standard and method of construction.

Club set for a big month STRZELECKI Bushwalking Club’s February’s activities provided a range of easy to hard walks and included popular overnight hikes to Sealers Cove in Wilsons Promontory, the Baw Baws and even further afield to Tasmania.

Day walks in March will take place in the Baw Baws and Walhalla, with extended walks once again on offer.

The Club’s 30th anniversary celebrations will commence with their monthly club meeting on Wednesday, March 10 from

7.30pm at the Trafalgar Scout Hall in Kitchener Street.

The meeting will include a welcome catchup for members and a stroll down memory lane with stories from some long-standing members.

Festivities continue on March 27-28 with a number of favourite walks at Mt Worth on Saturday, March 27 followed with dinner at the Yarragon Pub and some entertaining club history presentations.

Two easy walks in Warragul will be on

offer on Sunday morning along with an opportunity for a social catch-up at a local coffee venue.

Isn’t it time to move on with project?

LATROBE City Council’s decision to drop legal action against Chunxing indicates that a successful prosecution was unlikely.

Therefore, the same result could have been expected at VCAT. Health effects of lead emissions is cited as the major reason for the long term objections from Hazelwood North Action Group and the council, yet several independent studies have shown negligible health impacts when measured against strictest worldwide standards.

According to National Pollution Inventory, in 2018-19 the total lead emissions in Latrobe City were 520kg including 390kg from electricity generation.

In 2015-16, total lead emissions was 786kg, including 650kg from electricity generation.

Other major sources were roads, dust and motor vehicles.

Have incidences of lead poisoning been reported at this level of exposure? NO. With ULAB emissions modelled to be 17kg pa, why then is widespread lead poisoning being predicted, and other sources of lead being ignored?

Latrobe City has just released their Investment Roadmap which focuses on (1) industry-led education, skills and training (2) advanced manufacturing (3) regional and rural health innovation hub (4) circular economy.

ULAB aligns with three of these goals, particularly advanced manufacturing and circular economy but still they are not welcome.

The document notes that 915ha of affordable industrial land is available, including industrial Zone 2 for heavy industry where ULAB is to be appropriately located.

What message does this intense opposition send to other businesses and industry who wish to establish here and aid the transition of our economy, and aid in job creation for displaced workers?

Surely the whole community would like to move on from this controversy now that legal avenues have closed and Chunxing has demonstrated its commitment to establishing in Latrobe Valley.

The plant will be closely scrutinised by all concerned including the strengthened EPA and WorkSafe.

The vibe, the feedback, the huge attendance at this event, and about this event, was inspirational and is a testimony as to how much our citizens love and benefit from events such as these.

There are so many benefits to our region when the arts is given the support and backing it deserves ; people from outside our region take notice too and it’s not just me, but people have often told me how Latrobe Valley has produced so many amazing talents in all fields, art and music and design, graphic or otherwise.

We have much to be proud of and Sunday night was an awesome example of what we are capable of and have ... the artists who performed were world class.

Jack Jones did us all proud as did Hazel Ray and Joel Celima.

I didn’t see the first act as we came rushing back from a family function in Inverloch so I can’t comment, but feedback was also good about them.

I did however see and enjoy the other two acts: Jack Jones, was raised and educated musically here in Latrobe Valley and is now WORLD CLASS. Joel Celima did a superb job of accompanying Hazel Ray on guitar.

I am of course very proud of both Jack and Joel, and naturally, both are two of my very best students and are doing all of us in our region proud.

If you were not at this event, it was very heartening to hear Jack Jones speak so positively about Latrobe Valley and his love, respect and appreciation of our region and how it was a huge privilege for him to be able to perform for our people. All thanks to all concerned that this event took place.

THANK YOU. A word must be said also about Brett Tippet and his team for doing an amazing job in getting the sound right.

Getting the sound right at events like this is crucial and it takes skill and experience and good taste to get it right. Well done Brett and team.

MOE Football/Netball Club, under the leadership of president Manny Gelagotis, has shown outstanding community guidance and compassion following the tragic loss of one of it’s leading, and most respected young players and members, the son and grandson of two of the club’s most respected families.

It is a sad fact that the general public is not fully aware of the presence and intensity of mental illness in our youth until it hits close to home.

A meeting open for all youth in the area attracted an attendance of 300 whilst another for parents also drew an overwhelming response.

These meetings were addressed by the father of the youth concerned and he stressed there is help available, both locally and more broad based, and they should be encouraged to come forward with any concerns no matter how small.

Whilst the club, in conjunction with the “Black Dog Institute” will be ongoing with their program to address this terrible situation which exists right across the country, only the acceptance by the general public that it does exist and urgently requires more resources and support for treatment, can we hope for a cure for this terrible disease.

A recent report in the Herald Sun newspaper cited that psychiatric and/or psychological services are in such short supply that waiting times for treatment can be in excess of 12 months, which in too many cases is too late to save our loved ones.

MP: Have your say on school bus inquiry NATIONALS Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien is encouraging the community to participate in a new public inquiry into the use of school buses by the wider community.

The Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee inquiry is focused on whether the use of school buses in rural and regional areas should be expanded to give more of the community access to travel.

“It is great to see this issue being looked at,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Members of our rural communities in Gippsland have limited access to public transport while some school buses have plenty of room for extra passengers.

“I’ve had first-hand feedback from my community about the frustration of a young adult who was catching the bus for years on the way to school but could not continue to do so to get to a new job or tertiary education when still too young to get a driver’s licence.

“However, we need to hear feedback from the community on issues of student safety and the risks and rewards of allowing adults onto school buses.

“In some areas the school bus is full and even school students are unable to utilise the service. If we can ensure child safety and school students are not disadvantaged in any way this may be an option that could work well for the community.”

Mr O’Brien encouraged all parents of current school bus users and potential users of the school bus to make a submission.

“This is your opportunity to have your say - please make a submission.The more information presented, the more beneficial the inquiry will be,” he said.

“I look forward to hearing the evidence brought forward and the views of the community.”

Public hearings will be held after submissions have been received and will hear from witnesses to gauge the views and experiences of people in rural and regional areas.

The inquiry is set to hand down a final report before the end of this year.

Nüdel Kart is a mobile play kart that can be deconstructed and reconfigured in endless ways to encourage self-directed learning by using ‘loose parts’.

The term ‘loose parts’ refers to the use of stimulating materials that children can use to learn how the world works.

Unlike ‘standard’ playgrounds or most toys, loose parts are open-ended and reusable in an infinite number of ways, depending on each

SPECIFIC single-use plastics - like straws, cutlery, plates, drink stirrers, plastic cotton bud sticks and polystrene food and drink containers - will be banned in Victoria by 2023.

Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio last week announced a phase out and ban of specific single-use plastics, which will apply to all cafes, restaurants and organisations, over the next two years.

“Single-use plastic items - like straws and plastic cups - make up about one third of Victoria’s litter,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

“We need to change this, so we’re getting rid of them.

“When you’re at the supermarket or at a cafe, we all need to be mindful of the choices we make and reduce the single use plastic we use.

“All Victorians can play their part.”

The phase out and ban will not affect medical or scientific equipment, emergency services or other activities that require these types of plastics for health and safety reasons.

The government will work with the aged care and disability sectors to ensure appropriate exemptions for people who require straws or other single-use plastics.

The government will lead by phasing out certain single-use plastic items from government departments and agencies by February 2022.

Government bodies like Melbourne Museum, the NGV,TAFEs and Zoos Victoria have already begun phasing out these products and replacing them with sustainable materials.

Many businesses have also already started to transition and have made significant changes to reduce plastic waste.

The government will consult businesses and the community further with public consultation occurring throughout 2021 as part of a formal regulatory impact statement process.

The government urges Victorians to play a part by avoiding single-use plastics where possible in their daily lives and choosing the sustainable and reusable alternatives available.

On average, each Victorian sends about 68 kilograms of plastic waste to landfill every year.

The ban is part of the Victorian government’s 10-year plan to build a circular economy and transform Victoria’s waste and recycling system.

Victoria will become the fifth Australian state or territory to commit to ban singleuse plastics, with a ban on single-use plastic straws, cutlery and drink stirrers beginning in South Australia this week (1/3), the Australian Capital Territory committing to a ban from July, Queensland from September and Western Australia from 2023.

Partnership’s new leaders

A NEW group of local leaders has been appointed to serve the Gippsland Regional Partnership’s next term.

The state established the nine Regional Partnerships in 2016 in recognition that local communities are best placed to understand their region’s challenges and opportunities.

Members are appointed to serve four-year terms, meaning the inaugural Gippsland Regional Partnership committee’s tenure has come to an end.

Following an extensive recruitment campaign Therese Tierney, chair of Gippsland Primary Health Network, has been appointed chair of the Gippsland Regional Partnership.

“It is a privilege to be appointed as the Gippsland Regional Partnership chair, along with a diverse and inspiring group of leaders from right across Gippsland,” Ms Tierney said.

“I look forward to working with the new committee, business, industry groups and community members to collaborate on regional priorities that deliver positive outcomes for Gippsland.”

Ms Tierney will be joined by a diverse and high-calibre group drawn from sectors that include education, health, business, agriculture, manufacturing, social services, tourism, renewable

energy, regional development and the arts.

The Gippsland Regional Partnership prioritised improving employment pathways and investing in local talent to improve the future prosperity for all Gippslanders.

The partnership has joined forces with Federation University to provide subsidized scholarships through the ‘MBA Cost+’ project.

The first intake of the ‘MBA Cost+’ program commenced in September 2020 and included farmers, forestry workers, small business owners, manufacturers, a vet, winery operators, traditional owners, educators, real estate agents and social enterprise managers.

The ‘MBA Cost +’ program is already having an impact and benefiting many Gippsland businesses, including those impacted by fire, drought, coronavirus (COVID-19) and those navigating industry transition.

Toddler choking incidents on the rise

KIDSAFE Victoria has issued a warning about the range of everyday items which can pose a choking hazard to children and encouraged all parents and carers to undertake a first aid course, in a bid to reduce the number of choking incidents.

The call comes as statistics from the Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit (VISU) show that 203 children aged 0-5 years were treated in hospital due to choking incidents in 2019/20 - a 17 per cent increase from the previous year.

KidsafeVictoria general manager Jason Chambers highlighted that toddlers were particularly at risk of choking due to their natural curiosity.

“Young children commonly place objects into their mouth as a means of exploring the world and environment around them, however they don’t understand the danger that some items can pose,” he said.

“Any object smaller than a 20 cent coin can become lodged in a child’s throat and obstruct their airway - that means we all have a wide range of potential choking hazards in our homes.

“The statistics from VISU also reveal that a common item involved in choking incidents for toddlers is food.

“Apples, grapes, popcorn, corn chips, nuts, dried fruit, lollies, raw vegetables, pieces of meat, marshmallows and sausages are all common types of foods that can pose a choking hazard for children.””

Other common choking hazards around the home include coins, pen lids, button batteries, jewellery, marbles and other small toys or parts off of toys.

In the case of food, Kidsafe Victoria said that parents can make some relatively simple adjustments to how items are prepared to help reduce the risk.

“For babies and toddlers, popcorn, nuts, whole grapes, hard lollies, corn chips and other similar foods should be avoided. Other foods can be cooked, grated, mashed, minced or chopped up, to help reduce the risk,” Mr Chambers said.

Monash Children’s Hospital head of general paediatrics Dr Cathy McAdam highlighted the importance of all parents and carers being familiar with the first aid of a choking child.

“You don’t have time to wait for the ambulance.

You must act immediately,” Dr McAdam said.

Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing announced ClarkeHopkinsClarke has been appointed to take on the role.

The $13.376 million upgrade will see the building of new administration, science and middle years learning buildings.

Ms Shing said it was a privilege “to work with the two schools for a number of years in developing this project, and securing the funding required to enable both schools to flourish into the future”.

“The teachers, staff, school councils and families at both schools have been instrumental in shaping the priorities for the architect’s brief, and I can’t wait to see the new plans come to life as we move towards construction.”

In the past five years, the state government said it has invested more than $9 billion in more than 1600 school upgrades - creating more than 10,000 construction jobs - and is now ahead of schedule its commitment to open 100 new schools by 2026.

A CHURCHILL teen and her talented steed are off to mix it with the country’s best in the inaugural Australia’s Greatest Cowgirl Challenge to be held in Tatura in October.

Amy Karrer and her 15-year-old quarter horse gelding Huck have been picked to compete against Australia’s top 10 cowgirls in a series of challenges and obstacles.

The pair must prove themselves in the western disciplines of reining, cutting and an obstacle challenge, after which the top three will go headto-head in the cowgirl finale.

“I’m very excited, I have a lot to do to get Huck going, it will be a big challenge. This will test me and test my training abilities. But it will also be great exposure for me,” Amy said.

“Huck is not great in the obstacles, but we will have six months of training ahead of us. This will be a big challenge.”

The 17-year-old began riding as a tot at pony club but fell in love western riding after she tried out reining at a club in Toongabbie.

She went on to win a series of reining challenges in the local scene before catching the eye of top Koo Wee Rup trainer Michael Costello, under whom she is undertaking a year-long internship.

The aspiring professional trainer in the meantime is juggling online schooling with training her own horses, while completing her internship a few days a week.

“I really love the big stops and how soft the horse is in western riding, I love the horsemanship and training side of it,” she said.

Amy said one of her big highlights was taking part in a live horsemanship demonstration at Australia’s top horse industry event Equitana with freestyle trainer Stacy Westfall.

She is also eyeing off heading to the United States to learn from the world’s top cowboys, before returning to Equitana later this year.

Proud mum Shannon said she was excited to see how far her daughter was going.

“She is getting all these opportunities now.

She has worked so hard to get there and I’m so proud and excited to see how much she has accomplished,” she said.

“The cowgirl challenge will be a huge event and to see that level of riders will be great to watch.”

There has never been a better time to tackle the surge in single use disposable items, such as takeaway coffee cups, food packaging, masks, and sanitised wipes; all of which are polluting our local parks, bushland, streets, waterways, and beaches.

In fact, Quantum Market Research reveals more than one in three (34 per cent) of Australian households self-identified as producing more packaging waste during lockdown periods in 2020 compared to previous years, and more than one in two (55 per cent) reported they are now more concerned about product packaging waste than they were in 2019.

Volunteer capacity only reduced by 0.03 per cent in 2020 compared to that of 2019, clearly demonstrating the importance volunteers place on their local parks, streets, waterways, bushland and beaches.

Plastic items were the dominant rubbish type reported at these locations - representing 40.6 per cent of rubbish reported in parks and 30.3 per cent of that counted along roadsides.

Traralgon Men’s Shed says thanks to local

ALLAN Way, the director of Access Rehabilitation Equipment in Traralgon and Sale has always been passionate about the health and wellbeing of others around him.

Mr Way recently upgraded some of his surveillance equipment to facilitate more cameras and a longer data retention rate.

This family based business decided to donate their redundant equipment to a local community group, rather than on sell their equipment for profit.

In support of not only physical health, but also local mental health Mr Way donated his redundant equipment to the Traralgon Men’s Shed.

The Traralgon Men’s Shed is located at 5 Howitt St - a community shed of men and women volunteers.

It is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 3pm.

Thanks to Mr Way’s generous support Traralgon Men’s Shed now has 24/7 CCTV surveillance with intelligent cameras installed by That Cable Guy, who also donated equipment.

Traralgon Men’s Shed secretary Lyn Matthews (yes, a woman has managed the Men’s Shed for many years) gratefully accepted the donations.

This donation means men and women will have a secure place to interact, work together and build on life skills progressing into their future.

The Men’s Shed was pleased to present Mr Way with one of their timber chopping boards made by their team in appreciation of his donation.

Both women and men are always welcome at the Men’s Shed.

Clean-Up Australia Day on Sunday

SUNDAY, March 7 is National Clean-Up Australia Day. T h e L a t r o b e Va l l e y Sustainability Group is holding a clean-up of litter at Lake Narracan.

Meet at 10am in the Boat ramp carpark, where Sullivans Track joins Shore Road. Registration will be from 10am until 10.30am.

After the clean-up participants will meet back in the car park at 12pm to sort the litter into rubbish and recyclables.

BYO thick gloves, drink, snacks, hand sanitiser and if you have one, a tool to pick up litter.

Wear hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, long pants and if possible a high visibility vest.

Rubbish bags will be provided.

Invite your friends along.

The more helpers we get the more thorough our clean-up we will be.

DIABETES Victoria encourages health professionals, who have been a health professional member of our organisation for 12 months or more, to apply for the 2021 Gwen Scott grant program.

This year, Diabetes Victoria will award up to $40,000 to health professionals to further their training and development in diabetes.

Tarra-Bulga National Park puts call out for volunteers

TARRA-BULGA National Park is one of only a handful of National Parks in the state that has an operational Visitor Information Centre.

In this day and age it is refreshing for visitors that are not familiar with the Park to be able to have face to face

interaction with an actual human being.

This enables them to get the best information in regards to getting the most out of their visit.

At present they have vacancies for new volunteers to come on board and help to keep the centre open.

Full training and support will be provided.

You don’t even have to know that much about the park.

A list of answers for common visitor questions will be provided.

Long-term volunteers love the experience that working in the Visitor Information Centre offers.

JPs return to Traralgon

LOCAL Justice of the Peace have recommence their duties at Traralgon Police Station.

JPs have traditionally provided a document signing station as a community service, however this had to be stopped due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As well as a voluntary community service, the document signing station assists in

reducing the workload of local police officers.

JPs will be available each Tuesday and Thursday at Traralgon Police Station from the hours of 11am to 2pm.

Bringing area to life Restoration: Marshall Dean at his Flynns Creek property.

LANDOWNERS Marshall and Nicole Dean have worked hard to restore their own section of Flynns Creek.

The couple have farmed on their property, between Traralgon and Rosedale, since 2012 and have made returning the creek to its former glory a priority.

The Marshalls fenced the creek off, removed willows and weeds, and planted native trees.

Mr Marshall said the recent works compliment works completed by the property’s previous owners in the early 2000s.

“Most of the farmers that I know have been doing this work for a long time, primarily they care for their land as well as caring for their farm, their livestock and their environment,” he said.

“I think people are slowly coming around to doing more of it and seeing the benefits, there’s some extra work that is involved of course...but, I hope the benefits definitely outweigh the negatives.

“If you’re into those natural landscapes... I would suggest people get on board.

“The kids have had somewhere to walk every

day, ride their bikes, climb trees, swim in the creek, swim in the dam.

“It’s all a part of the farm life isn’t it?”

Some of the work on the Dean property has been done in partnership with the Latrobe Landcare Network and through the Gippsland Lakes Coordinating Committee funded through the Victorian State Government for the health of the Gippsland Lakes.

West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority project officer Dan Cook said Flynns

Creek has a history of landholders doing the right thing.

“At Flynns you have a great example of a ‘catchment approach’ where a group of farmers, along a long length of river have independently worked to rehabilitate their riverbank and as a consequence bring about a much bigger impact on downstream water quality,” he said.

“If we get one farmer fencing off a waterway and planting native trees to stabilise the bank that’s always great.”

RESIDENTS gathered at the Heyfield Wetlands Information Centre last week to celebrate the official launch of the town’s innovative project to design a more sustainable and equitable local energy model.

During the next three years, hundreds of households, dozens of businesses, and local schools will be actively involved in the study via energy audits, real-time monitoring and control, data sharing and analytics, public displays and teacher-led online activities for students.

Microgrids and other types of local energy systems are now being explored by communities around Australia and internationally, as part of the accelerating transition to a distributed and digital renewable energy future.

Typically, they aim to more closely match energy supply and demand within a defined area, such as a town or a campus, seeking benefits including lower energy costs, as well as cleaner and more reliable energy supplies for residents and businesses.

MyTown Microgrid is bringing together a community, leading researchers and Australian businesses to find the best way for Heyfield to access more affordable, reliable and cleaner energy.

Receiving $1.8 million in funding from the federal government’s Regional and Remote Communities Reliability Fund, the project is being led by the Heyfield Community Resource Centre, Wattwatchers Digital Energy and the University of Technology, Sydney.

Additional financial support is being provided to the resource centre by the state government’s Latrobe Valley Authority.

This is Heyfield’s second time around when it comes to community-led action for cleaner energy and carbon reduction, having drawn national attention a decade ago with its Sustainable Smart Town ‘Flags’ program, which engaged nearly half of Heyfield’s then 700 households and won recognition from the United Nations Association of Australia in 2012.

Julie Bryer from the Heyfield Community Resource Centre said Heyfield residents cared about each other and wanted the best for their children and grandchildren.

“This project will make a really big difference, and helps build on the sustainability initiatives that we’ve been running here over the last decade,” she said.

Trialling a novel strategy, MyTown Microgrid combines a community-led approach with the latest ‘Internet-of-Things’ technology and data science techniques.

Hundreds of energy devices will be offered to residents, schools and businesses in the town, in tandem with deep-dive audits to profile how Heyfield uses electricity.

Wattwatchers program manager Tim McCoy noted strong demand from the community to participate in the data collection phase of the trial.

“We’ve seen really strong interest from members

of the Heyfield community to engage in the project and their energy future by installing devices in their homes or businesses,” he said.

“The state-of-the-art Wattwatchers devices will gather real-time energy use and generation to help form a bigger picture of Heyfield’s energy needs.”

The project also seeks to create the tools and resources to make it easier and faster for other communities around Australia to replicate and understand whether a microgrid makes sense for them, including assessing alternative local energy solution models.

Research lead Dr Scott Dwyer from the University of Technology, Sydney’s Institute for Sustainable Futures said there were many options for communities looking to more sustainable ways of sourcing their energy.

“Navigating a path through these can be extremely challenging for towns like Heyfield,” he said.

“What technologies and partners should they choose?

“What business model is right for them?

“How can you ensure the benefits are equitably shared within the community?

“Faster and easier ways for understanding, designing and implementing microgrid technologies are needed for interested communities, and this project will take us a step closer to achieving this.”

ST Mary’s Primary School in Newborough started the year with a splash, with students from Years 3 to 6 participating in competitive swimming activities to build their water skills and confidence.

Students showed respect and encouragement for their peers as they raced to the finish line.

St Mary’s carried out swimming trials for their Year 3 to 6 students at the Moe Outdoor Pool.

Students braved the cold water to try out for the Western Valley District Swimming Carnival.

Of the 44 students who tried out, 27 students made the squad and went on to compete at the higher level.

“We are very impressed with all of the students who put themselves forward to try out for the swimming,” St Mary’s Primary School sports coordinator Nicole Skinner said.

“They represented themselves and the school with pride and enthusiasm.”

Following their success in the Western Valley District Competition, 21 students went on to compete at Division level at the Moe Pool.

St Mary’s enjoyed a successful day with seven students progressing through to the Regional Swimming Carnival in Sale.

Ian's glorious voice has graced concert performances of the Madrigals, Latrobe Chorale, the Latrobe Light Opera Society. Ian's talent and passion for music also led him to mentor other singers, as well as support for the music directors in the creation of beautiful concert programs.

His meticulous work as choir secretary ensured smooth operations.

Valley team is ready to strike TENPIN BOWLING

SOME of the best 10-pin bowlers in the Latrobe Valley will make their way to Wodonga for the Victorian Country Cup this weekend.

The competition encompasses 10 teams from across the state, who will be vying for titles in men’s, women’s and overall divisions.

Latrobe Valley will enter the tournament as reigning champions in overall.

The team is based out of Wyncity Morwell, and takes in players from as far as Bairnsdale.

Ladies captain Jodie Tindell said it was always exciting to be making the annual trip to the Country Cup. “It’s a fun tournament that we get to do every year,” she said.

“There is a lot of top bowlers from regional areas taking part, a lot of people who have bowled for Victoria and even Australia.”

The competition will run over three days, with teams playing up to eight games each day.

Points will accumulate across the games, and the team with the most points at the end of the tournament will take home the trophy.

Latrobe Valley will come up against opponents from Geelong, Bendigo and Shepparton.

Latrobe Valley Men’s team: Bruce Mason, Clinton Monds, Graham Hodgskin, Bryan Woszczeiko, Rhys Woszczeiko, Grady Long, Seb Perham.

Skinner eyes latest chapter of football career

MOE export and former Brisbane Lions player Sam Skinner was let go by North Melbourne this week.

Skinner had been training at the Kangaroos in the hope of gaining a place on the clubs list via the preseason supplemental selection period which ends on March 9.

He had played in a practice match against St Kilda at Arden Street.

Skinner joined former Collingwood player Flynn Appleby in training with North Melbourne, but both were not offered contracts for 2021.

The key position player has since joined SANFL club South Adelaide in the hope of making his way back onto an AFL list.

Skinner played three AFL games for the Brisbane Lions across five injury-riddled seasons.

CHURCHILL can book a home semi-final with victory on the last day of the regular season in Premier A Grade.

The Cobras will get there if they defeat Morwell and top placed Mirboo North knocks over second placed Latrobe.

Churchill is in the box seat to get first innings points, and has all day to get the required 81 runs.

Ricky Velardi and left hander Matt Harvey will resume, with a view of spending as much time in the middle as possible.

When chasing low totals players often subconsciously fall into the trap of assuming they will simply get the job done two or three wickets down and end up making a meal of the situation, so there might be an opportunity for Morwell bowlers like Brendan Brincat and Mark Cukier to set some really attacking fields to capitalise.

With this in mind, the plan from Churchill might be to approach the batting effort as if they are chasing 281 instead of 81.

If the Cobras go in with this frame of mind they could well find they stroll across the line either side of tea.

A Morwell loss won’t be the end of the world for the Tigers - that is unless

Raiders secure an outright win against Trafalgar, which will open up all sorts of possibilities.

RAIDERS has already banked four points against Trafalgar, who are now into their second innings.

Despite the scoreboard reading 1/50, Trafalgar is effectively 1/29 as it looks to chew its way to some sort of lead.

The Ships face the prospect of needing to put a score on the board and have enough time to bowl Raiders out to take six points and a reverse outright result from the match.

Now that the match is essentially a one dayer, Trafalgar will more than likely look to bat until tea and see what the situation is.

The Ships will need to make at least 200 in its second innings to be a sporting chance, which will mean Raiders will need a tricky total of 120 to win outright.

Liam White will resume this week and look to build his score, while the Trafalgar nightwatchman finds himself in the same position as around this time last season.

Raiders will be down a man as wicketkeeper Chris Stanlake has torn an intercostal muscle and fractured a rib.

Young pace ace Harry McColl took 4/17 last week and could have his eyes set on another bag.

Amazingly, Raiders could climb from fifth to second if it wins outright and

Latrobe and Morwell lose. Trafalgar will be playing for pride, and also to make sure the bus they have booked for the last game of the season means a victorious trip home.

MIRBOO North is nine wickets away from sealing the minor premiership.

The Tigers have Latrobe 1/2 in response to 188.

Shark veterans Jamie Coltman and Adam Duncan will face the music, and look to stabilise the innings in the first session.

Latrobe have a number of quality players to come, and if Ronnie Chokununga gets going, could propel Latrobe to victory.

Ideally Mirboo North will want to take early wickets, but by the same token will know it has bowlers that can take backto-back wickets quickly, meaning there won’t be too much cause for panic unless things really start to unravel.

CENTRALS can grab a home final with an outright victory over Moe in A Grade.

Moe needs a further 103 runs to make Centrals bat again, and given the two are likely to play each other in the semi-final, might look to bat out the day for match practice.

CATS has first innings points wrapped up against Traralgon West and will just want to get through the last day with all their players ripe for finals.

Players on the third green grr will be able to look k up and see one of the cooling towers at Yalllourn Power Station, while those on the bacck nine are also afforded a nice view of Lake Narracan.

WONTHA HAGGI A Golf Club is set on more than 100 acres and is another quaint country course which allows its natural surroundings to enhance the playing experience.

A noticeable feature of the course is the number of grass grr bunkers that have slowly replaced sand over the years.

The course offers an attractive option for a weekend retreat, with many tourist attractions in Phillip Island and Inverloch not far away.

TRAF AFAL FALGAR L Golf Club is one of the most highly acclaimed courses in country Victoria, and people travel from far and wide to try and conquer its array of challenges.

Regarded as a true hidden gem on the local golfin ing circuit, the course sits at the foothills of the Baw Baw Ranges and provides a beautiful environment in which to play a round.

The course demands a high level of accuracy, so players will often have to sacrifi fice i distance in order to keep their ball in play.

Greens have also been known to play very quick.

A happy hacker probably won’t last long at Trafalgar, and could easily lose half a dozen balls before the fourth hole.

Those up for a real challenge would be well advised to visit Trafalgar Golf Club at 230 Gibson Rd, Trafalgar.

YALLOURN Golf Club is virtually opposite Moe Golf Club, with loca al green grr fee players often alternating betweeen courses.

Elevated tees are a sta aple at Yallourn, as the ball is often afforded d the luxury of rollin ng downhill on a number of fairw rways. w Although the club is teechnically located in Yallourn Heights, for sim mplicity, most associa ate it as being on the outskiirts of Newborough.

Yallourn Golf Club, aloong with Yallourn Bowls Club, also located d in Newborough, ha ave ensured the Yallourn na ame lives on in some capacity.

The Yallourn township p was established to house employees of th he State Electricity Commission, and at its peak had a populatioon of 5000.

In the 1980s the town was dug up to expan nd the open-cut atYallourn Power Station.

By all reports, the old Yallourn oval was th he best in country Victoria,, with its surface eveen comparable to that of th he MCG for the 1956 Olympics.

Yallourn Golf Club is at Golf Links Rd, Yallourn Heights.

CHURCHILL Holes: 18; par: 70; course diff fficulty: f normal CHURCHILL and Monash Golf Club houses a somewhat unique golf course design gn n in that players are able to play 18 holes, but the course itself only has 11 tees.

As such, the fir irst tee is also the 10th tee, the second the 11th, and so on.

This continues throughout the course, with the exception of two tees, given gii there are 11 all up.

Like the town itself, which has only been around since the early 1960s, the course is also relatively new, and was established in 1982 as a six-hole course under the banner of the Churchill Hotel Social Golf Club.

Over time, three holes were added and the club took in the name “Churchill Monash”, after the university campus in which it is located.

Although Monash University Gippsland has since become Federation University, the Monash name has stayed.

The course requires some hiking, with two holes instructing players to “leave buggi gies i here” before making their way up a steep slope to tee off.

Strong balance is required on the eight and 17th fairw rway, w as players find fii themselves standing on a 45 degr gree r angle when they take their shot.

A lake behind the green grr with the university campus in the backgr ground r offers a good photo opportunity, and no doubt many students have skipped classes to have a hit on a sunny Latrobe Valley day.

Churchill and Monash Golf Club is situated behind the northern end of Federation University and can be accessed via Mary Grant Bruce Dr, Churchill.

On the front nine, the hole four par-fi five i offers a daunting challen nge, with players needing to nail a good drrive and second shott to be any chance of regi giste i ering a decent score.

A blasted tea-tree not far from the green grr has caused many a golfer att Heyfi field i to wither away in mental agony.

Fittingly, given gii the Heeyfi field i Football-Netb ball Club is known as the Ka angaroos, the marsu upials themselves can often n be found emergi ging i from the bush to bouncee around the fairw rway w ys.

Noel Rubenstein had a 32-19 win over Darrell White and Dave Smith won 24-22 over Abbas Mehran.

The lone winner for Morwell (2) was Bob Skinner 30 - 24 over Jim Moyle.

Warragul (2) 18-120 defeated Morwell (2) 2-88.

Yinnar had a good win at Traralgon (4) with Trevor Berryman and his rink of Gordon Smith, Ray Tanti and Luka Djudurovic winning 35-12 over Jim Overdyk.

Gavin Osborne won 31-21 over Tony Colwell.

Murray De La Haye drew with Tony Buhagiar 22-22 and the lone Traralgon (4) winner was Paddy Francis with a 22-17 win over Tim Roche.

BOWLS WEST GIPPSLAND SATURDAY PENNANT

DIVISION 1 TRARALGON and Longwarry played on Friday night under the roof at Traralgon in what looks like becoming an annual fixture with both teams enjoying the experience and looking forward to a free Saturday.

Last season saw a big win for the home team and earlier this year Longwarry achieved their first win of the campaign in round six with a clean sweep of the well fancied visitors.

Longwarry is in a battle to avoid relegation with Morwell Club, who they play this week and there were a number of Morwell Club supporters encouraging Traralgon to gain full points to improve their chances of avoiding relegation.

Longwarry remembering last year’s slow start took note of Traralgon’s habit of getting in a huddle prior to play starting and they vowed to match the home team right from the start.

Longwarry raced to a 17-1 lead across all four rinks and the game was on.

Traralgon gradually pegged them back before powering away to a big win.

Michael Yacoub and his Traralgon rink of Ron Sherlock, Pat Trewin and Phil Mustoe maintained their unbeaten form since Yacoub gained the permanent skipper’s role with a 29-16 victory over Trevor Eastwell and his rink of Hank Metselaar, Peter and Jason Lieshout.

Wayne Lynch and his team of Kevin Enguell, Shane Chapman and Ian Kirkup had a 27-20 win over Russell White and his rink of Ken White, Mark Serong and Barry White.

Matt Ferrari and his team of Derek Hewling, Ian Hilsley and Wil McIlwain continued the good work with a 29-20 win over Ken Towt and his team of Elio Megetto, Daniel Cooper and John McCarthy.

James Scullin and his team of Chris Ward, Abe Roeder and Vince McIlwain completed the clean sweep with a 28-16 win over Adam Proctor and his team of Glenn and Grant Pask together with Matt Eccles giving Traralgon a well-earned victory and the excellent crowd a fine display of bowling from some of our better bowlers.

That meant only three Division One games were played on the Saturday.

Drouin, seeking to regain second place, travelled to Newborough and had the opportunity to play on a first-class green prepared by greenkeeper Scott Jones, who has greatly improved the Newborough green in his first season at the club.

Early in the match Drouin showed their liking for the excellent playing surface as they took the game up to the home team.

Paul Sherman and his rink of Tony Knipping, Barry Daley and Scott Jones showed a return to their early season form with a 32-14 victory over Mark Atkinson and his team of Corey Atkinson, Steve Barr and Dale Hendrick.

Once more Kevin Lovett and his rink of Brian Carpenter, Rod Lewis and Neale Houston won with a 23-20 win over Toby Wallace and his rink of Peter Wallace, Graeme Aubrey and Samantha Atkinson.

DIVISION 3 TRARALGON (3) stay at the top of the ladder was brief as they travelled to Boolarra and in a nail biting finish lost by one shot with Boolarra retaining third place on the ladder.

In an exciting finish, Boolarra skipper Darren Napier was preparing to put down the last bowl of the match when he was advised by his team mates that Boolarra would win the match by one shot if he didn’t disturb the head where any movement of the jack would have given Traralgon overall victory.

Discretion was the better part of valour and he declared the head giving Boolarra a well-deserved win.

The home team was well served by Terry Parker and his rink of Peter Gair, Bev Thompson and John Cargill with a 31-29 win over May Cross.

Bob Allen and his rink of Tamara Traill, Joel Anderson and Peter Macou had a 23-20 win over Bob Dykstra.

Stan Williams and Norbert Schroeter drew 26-26 and for the visitors Trevor James and his rink of Matt Ogilvie, Brian Johnson and Ian Wills had a 22-18 win over Darren Napier, leaving Boolarra the winners.

After losing to Traralgon (3) and dropping to second on the ladder Thorpdale travelled to Moe (2) and played one of their best games yet on the unfamiliar Moe synthetic surface, winning all four rinks and regaining top spot on the ladder.

Ross Kennedy and his rink of Wendy Jennings, Ross Pethybridge and Shane Chambers defeated Rex Price 28-16.

Brendan Jennings defeated Noel Savige 27-18, Danny Vanzuylen defeated Brian Rodgers 32-23 and Ben Powell completed the clean sweep by defeating John Wood 29-28.

NEWBOROUGH (3) travelled to Drouin and found the synthetic green not to their liking as the home team gained an upset win after going to a big lead early before Newborough (3) got in front before losing some big ends and falling behind again.

Finals spots are up for grabs in TDCA CRICKET TDCA

THE TDCA enters the final round of the regular season this weekend still with finals spots up for grabs.

Its going to be a tight finish across all grades with some exciting cricket to be played.

Match of the Round has Gormandale hosting Yarram & District with the visitors needing a resounding victory to give themselves a chance at featuring in the finals in their inaugural season.

The Pelicans won some respect last week in their nail biting outright loss and will come into this match at Stoddart Oval knowing they can knock off the Tigers on their home patch after doing so all the way back in Round 6 in a one day fixture.

Yarram have continued to improve throughout the season with their players learning quickly that the hike over Powers Hill isn’t actually that bad and with finals on the line this should be their strongest team for the season yet.

All of their players have been able to contribute something for the season and usually there is a standout each week with a big score, but it hasn’t happened in conjunction with others so maybe this is the game everything clicks for their top order and they post a massive score on the back of more than just one players individual brilliance.

The Tigers have guaranteed themselves a home final but will still be aiming to win their last match and carry some good form into the semi-final.

It can be difficult though knowing that finals are assured and a home final is just around the corner, but if the Tigers are focusing on that they will leave

themselves wide open for a loss. The Tigers batting is really coming in to some good form having made 300, 212 and 198 in their last three innings.

Gormandale have also had contributors with the bat right through their batting list but now need to build on that and have players like Chris Lehner and Paul Roberts notch up a score of 50+ to get into some form before finals.

PREDICTION: Gormandale have been guilty of going off the boil when things don’t matter too much in the grand scheme of the season so don’t be surprised if they don’t fully switch on Day 1. This will open the door for a fired up Yarram & District to take full advantage and go home after this round with a win and a potential finals spot.

THE MATCH-UP: Jeremy Babb was all over the Tigers in their last match up and will be the key to winning this game as well. It will be up to the Gormandale middle order to stop him from having an impact and Tate Marsh could very well be the hard hitting batsman to nullify Babb’s impact on the match.

IN another exciting game Ex Students host Rovers at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve, which could very well be the exact match-up seen in the semifinals in two weeks time if Yarram don’t get the win over Gormandale.

What this means is that Rovers will get a chance to have an in-depth look at the Sharks and how they go about things and as long as they hold their own it won’t matter too much if they learn from the match and plan thoroughly for the weekend after.

Rovers are coming off the bye so will need to get back into the swing of things this weekend but its

going to be hard against the Sharks, who will want to put an exclamation point on the regular season and carry momentum into the finals.

No player is building more momentum than the superstar Lee Stockdale who is coming off an extraordinary match last round.

Stockdale took an amazing 11 wickets in round 13 and also made 148 runs to go with it in what has to be the best individual performance by a player in a match ever.

Along with Gilmore, who is smashing runs for fun the Sharks head into March at full steam and will be looking for another big finals campaign.

PREDICTION: Ex Students will win and win comfortably. They will try to ground Rovers into the dirt to get the psychological edge over them for a potential match up in the semi-final which Rovers simply can’t allow as percentage could very well be the difference in them making the finals or not.

THE MATCH-UP: Simon Duff has been Rovers best performed bowler all year and will need to be on his game going up against the likes of Gilmore, Stockdale and co. A couple wickets at a good economy rate could see Duff win the league bowling average at years end.

TOONGABBIE take on Imperials in the final match of the round in what is a dead rubber as both teams are out of finals contention this season.

Both clubs will be scratching their heads as to what happened this season after these two teams met each other in a hard fought semi-final in season 2019/20 and at the start of the year would have assumed they would feature in finals again.

It means that these two very proud clubs will

be able to focus all their attention into winning this game which can prove incredibly important when recruiting over winter and building into next season.

Imperials haven’t had much luck, but a couple performances from youngsters can make the season all worth while so it would be great to see the likes of Mitch Bulmer and Mitch Bellingham continue their partnership from last week and get a good hit in up the order again.

Toongabbie are coming off a magnificent win over rivals Glengarry and a win here could put them up to fifth on the ladder if results go their way.

It may not mean much in terms of this season but again, when recruiting and planning for next season it can mean all the difference.

Rob Wheildon will love the new ground at Catterick Crescent to bat on as the small boundaries will suit his style of batting down to a tee.

Along with Jason Veneman who will build a strong foundation at the top of the order these two batsmen will crucial to winning this match.

PREDICTION: Toongabbie have the form coming into the match, but Imperials have everything to play for and must get the points here. Brett Chapman looked steely last week while at the crease. He will get up for this match and make a big score to send the season out on a high.

THE MATCH-UP: Kev Stoddart versus the small boundaries should be a cracker. The floppy hat enthusiast who always bats with aggression will be aiming to score quick and score big so Imps bowlers better be prepared.

Energy’s mixed bag BASKETBALL

LAST week’s Energy Basketball results were a mixed bag.

Five wins, three losses and a forfeit were a pleasing result after an enormous week for the Energy athletes.

The Under-16 and Under-18 Country Championships were held late last month and then the first State Selection trial was held at the weekend.

Athletes, while fatigued, continued to show the Energy fighting spirit. Some outstanding performances were on show, with two in particular.

Noah Christy finished the night with 21 points, five assists, seven rebounds and a massive seven steals in a pivotal role in his team’s win.

LAST week’s Thursday night run was the tough 6km Chook Hill course.

The run started in the pine plantation on Maryvale Road.

The 59 participants on the night were meet with cooler running conditions, compared to the humid weather of previous weeks, but they had to contend with strong winds.

Fastest home in the male race was Ryan Wissmer in an incredible time of 20.07, 2nd place getter was Dale Murphy in 22.50, only one second ahead of 3rd placed Greg Semmler in a time of 22.51.

In the female race Yani Cornthwaite took out the honours with a time of 27.25, closely followed by Kay Arrowsmith in second place with a time of 27.49, and third place belonged to Carrie Hodges in a time of 28.07.

Tonight’s run is the Traralgon South 6km Course.

CAPTAIN Spud, the horse that was the pride and joy of late AFL champion Danny Frawley and named in his honour, scored a special maiden win at Sale last Friday.

Ridden by jockey Jamie Mott, the son of Toronado held on to defeat a fast-finishing Kermy over 1415 metres by a head.

Frawley never got to see the three-year-old race, but according to his wife Anita, was particularly fond of him and would often shuttle visitors from their Ballarat property Sylvan Lodge up to the spelling paddocks to show off the horse he’d affectionately nicknamed David, after co-owner and Frawley’s close friend of 25 years, David Hall.

Following Frawley’s passing, Hall named the Peter Gelagotis-trained gelding Captain Spud in memory of his great friend and it’s taken the horse five starts to break his maiden after debuting in September 2020, with Frawley’s family remaining in the ownership.

Post-race an emotional Gelagotis spoke of how special the victory was and how much it would mean to Frawley’s family and friends.

“He was a dear friend, sadly lost and very much loved and missed by a lot of people,” he said.

“We all looked up to Danny and what an iconic person he was while he was walking this earth.

“A very credentialled gentleman I must say and a very close friend of owner David Hall’s and a big thank you to David for his continued support.”

Brains trust: Jack Brincat (Newborough), Aaron Wilson (Moe) and Jimmy Grant (Hill End) have bravely decided to coach reserve grade football teams this season.

WHILE there are a number of high profile names coaching senior football teams across Gippsland this season, few people seem to give much limelight to those taking on the much harder job of coaching the team directly below them.

Like many others brave enough to put their hand up to coach the reserves in country football, Aaron Wilson, Jack Brincat and Jimmy Grant will be taking the reins of Moe, Newborough and Hill End in the grade affectionately known as the twos, magoos, scoobs and scooby-doos.

As far as football teams go, the reserves well and truly belong in a class of their own.

In no other grade of football are you likely to see dozens of player magnets covered in strapping tape with names written in permanent marker on the unavailable list, or game-play where the same player who can’t hit a target under absolutely no pressure can then kick the most freakish goal ever seen moments later.

Grant will have a fair bit on his plate as he juggles coaching the reserves and also playing in the senior game afterward.

“I didn’t really think about coaching until I saw it advertised and thought why not just take a step up - challenge myself to play senior footy and coach reserves footy,” he said.

“The main focus was if I was to be appointed to have a great support crew around me that can take over the final stages of a game if need-be while I’m going to warm up (with the seniors).

“I have a great assistant coach and team manager who the players respect a lot, they’re two people I can really trust to take over.”

Having been around local football long enough, the three mates know the territory they are entering, and know the specific challenges that will meet them as reserve grade coaches - challenges no senior coach ever has to deal with.

No other job at a football club requires the same level of flexibility than that of

the seconds coach, as injuries during the season are inevitable, meaning the senior team always need to call on players from the seconds to step up at some stage.

At this time of year when everybody is keen and nobody has played, the reserves job description is to ‘develop players to prepare them for senior football’, however, come about round 12 it is changed to ‘calling every past player to ever play for the club to help make up the numbers’.

Brincat knows this reality better than anyone, having gone through arguably the greatest baptism of fire for any reserves coach, or coach for that matter, as coach of the Gormandale seconds in 2019.

That year, the Tigers lost 17 of 18 games, but had 18 moral victories in not forfeiting a match.

In what must surely be a record, the North Gippsland club came close to cracking the ton for players used in a season, with 99 different people pulling on the boots at some stage.

“I became a black belt in adaptation in my time at Gormandale,” Brincat said cheekily.

“We lost some players a little bit too late to replace them so then it became just scrambling. We were having our meetings Tuesday night to pick teams because we knew how much it was going to change. From Tuesday to Friday night I was just calling blokes, firstly introducing myself saying ‘hey do you want to come and play footy for me?’ and managed to put a team out on the park every week ... so I’m fairly prepared.”

Wilson will be coaching in a slightly different environment, calling the shots for Moe in the major Gippsland League.

Where generally reserve grade games have a handful of players over a certain age and weight division, the higher population of towns in the Gippsland League means the reserves competition is a decent standard, so much so it would not be too controversial to suggest there would be Gippsland League second teams that would beat minor league senior sides.

“You find some really good opposition (in Gippsland League seconds),” Wilson said.

“You have to look at some of the senior

sides and the recruitment and development that they have of their juniors just to see that they have some really quality guys unable to break into the senior team. The important thing is that those guys that can’t break into the senior team are still really hungry to develop and work on their craft. They don’t see the reserves as necessarily a negative thing they see it as an opportunity to try and work on themselves and become better players.

“Twos is an opportunity for you to maybe get more of an opportunity in a position of your strength that you don’t necessarily do in senior grade. A lot of the problem you see is that younger 18, 19, 20 year old kids who have a sense of entitlement and believe that just because they were good as a junior that they should be a senior footballer and that is not the case at all, particularly at Gippsland League level.

“It’s really important the younger generation understands that you have to do your due diligence and work on yourself and develop and by the time you get to 23-24 is when you really start to hit your peak as a footballer.”

Any youngster who finds themselves with the second picked team for an extended number of weeks can take a leaf out of any number of success stories of players who have built their careers up from the reserves.

Shaun Hart played in a reserve grade premiership with the Brisbane Bears in 1991, avoided the axe that same season and was a Norm Smith medallist 10 years later.

Robert DiPierdomenico served the ultimate apprenticeship at Hawthorn - playing 99 games in the seconds before going on to win a Brownlow Medal.

On playing 99 games in the reserves Dipper famously quipped “I wasn’t good enough to play 100”.

At local level, Leongatha took the praiseworthy step of even making Tom Marriott come back from injury through the seconds less than a year after he won the 2018 Gippsland League senior league best and fairest by 11 votes.

reserve grade games can often be low scoring, even in perfect conditions, something Wilson believed came down to a few factors.

“Reserve grades you have your top three or four players for any team that stands out and the drop away that you can have due to numbers can make the gap between your best and your worst quite significant,” he said.

“The teams that generally seem to score the best have a really good balance between who their best player is and who their 22nd picked player is, and in country footy we don’t have any rules where you can flood the backline if we’re starting to get a few kicked on us.”

It is not only flooding where the rule book can be exploited in the seconds, with players pushing the concept of fair play right to the edge.

Those needing to kill time can do so by running into an open goal and launching the ball into the car park knowing the clock will keep running, while conversely, a player can boot the ball back to the centre after a goal to give their team more time to get their percentage up.

With the new season not far away, the excitement for reserve grade players may well outshine their senior counterparts, considering no one gets paid to play in the seconds.

Every true reserves player needs their moment in the sun because of this.

They deserve it for having to suffer everything that goes with playing in the reserves.

From getting to the game and finding out six blokes have pulled out, to playing shortened quarters so the seniors can start on time, to subconsciously knowing no one really cares if the seconds win or lose.

Those who have never played in the reserves will never truly know what it is like.

It takes a special person to drive to Bairnsdale or Wonthaggi to play a game of twos footy.
