Frosty start delivers ice cold record By TOM GANNON
WINTER made an early appearance on Monday morning when the Latrobe Valley recorded the coldest May morning since 2008. At its coldest point at 7.15am when many were getting up for work, temperatures stooped to a bone chilling -2.8 degrees with an apparent temp (feels like) of -6.8 degrees. The morning smashed last year’s lowest May temperature of -0.8 degrees and edged out the previous record of -2.6 degrees on May 24, 2008. Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Dr Naomi Banger said the temperatures we saw on Monday are unusual this early in the year. “There was a pretty significant cold front that moved across South Australia and Victoria, it brought a significant amount of cold air that we’re not quite acclimatised to yet, it is pretty early in the season for those kinds of temperatures,” she said. Much like you would expect going in to the winter months it won’t be getting much warmer, however Dr Banger said the Valley should expect higher maximum and lower minimum temperatures this winter. “We see that temperature trend from our changing climate being reflected in our outlooks, so we’re actually forecasting above average maximum and minimum temperatures for the Latrobe Valley this year,” she said. However, Dr Banger said this winter should be relatively fleeting as a result of longer dry periods. “The longer term trends are showing those wet and cold conditions we experience in winter are actually becoming contracted as we see our drier periods and fire season extend into the latter part of spring and early part of autumn,” she said. In terms of rainfall, Dr Banger said although much of the state should experience above average rainfall, the Latrobe Valley won’t see an increase. “We’re seeing a chance of above average rainfall for northern and western parts of Victoria, but not the Latrobe Valley, we’re seeing more around average condition for both June and July,” she said.
