MINDLESS vandals targeted the iconic old Glengarry Railway Station on Monday night, leaving business owners and the local community outraged. Platform 3854 Cafe owner David Barnes arrived on Tuesday morning to find the heritage-listed building at the old station plastered with graffiti and paint. The business, which has been up and running for about six weeks, sits atop the scenic Gippsland Plains Rail Trail on

Main Street and was a labour of love for Mr Barnes and co-owner Tony McNulty. “We’ve been doing it up for about six months and it’s been going really well and people around here are loving it at the moment, so it’s just a pity,” Mr Barnes told The Express. “We had plans to open up (on Tuesday) and you can’t open when it’s like that, so with all the stuff getting around the world at the moment there’s enough going on without worrying about little nitty gritty stuff.”

Empty acrylic paint tubes and spray cans were left scattered around the cafe and the grass area around Apex Park was also torn up by car tyres. “A small business like this, we’ve got three girls working here and we’ll have to fix all of this up before we can open again,” Mr Barnes said. “That means they probably don’t get paid, they lose money, we lose income and it makes it bad for the town because it’s quite a busy spot.

Poor form: Platform 3854 Cafe co-owner David Barnes has been left saddened after vandals targeted his newly-opened business on Monday night.

Bombers set to fly off?

LATROBE City Council is inviting community members to talk about a proposed battery recycling facility in Hazelwood North. A series of listening posts will be held in August to allow interested community members to engage with councillors. A planning permit application was submitted to council on February 3 for a proposed Used Lead Acid Battery recycling facility to be built at Fourth Road. Council planners have requested the applicant Chunxing provide further information on the planning application and this response must be provided by August 21. The proposed plant will require both an Environment Protection Authority works approval as well as planning permission from council in order to go ahead. “We know there has been a significant amount of interest from the community at previous information sessions,” Mayor Dan Clancey said. A TRARALGON duo received a $2 million surprise when they walked into work on Monday morning. The workmates’ private syndicate scored them a division one prize of $2 million at the weekend’s TattsLotto draw. They are the second division one winners from Plaza Lotto, Traralgon in the past 12 months. The duo came across the exciting results when they checked their ticket at work and said they couldn’t concentrate for the rest of the day. When asked what they would do with their winnings the pair revealed they would no longer be workmates, with one using the money to retire. “We run a bit of a social club, and we buy tickets here and there,” the syndicate leader said. “We usually buy one ticket each week but always into different games. “We’re both still in shock. I’ll definitely use my share to pay off my mortgage.” FULL STORY - PAGE 5

POWERHOUSE Yallourn Yallourn North is the latest club to declare it is looking to defect from the Mid Gippsland Football Netball League. On Tuesday night, the Bombers executive confirmed it had sought and received permission from AFL Gippsland to “explore options” for season 2021 and beyond. President Evan Sheekey said the club was in discussions with its members regarding the recommendations of the AFL Victoria-commissioned G25 Strategy, which included a proposed merger of the Alberton and Mid Gippsland leagues. “We have not made any decisions regarding moving anywhere, we are only exploring options available to us. If/ when decisions are made our members, players and supporters will be consulted prior,” he said. “We are committed to maintaining our professional approach to the future of our club. Our club is committed to transparency with our members, players and supporters.” FULL STORY - VALLEY SPORT
