LOGGING trucks yesterday formed a blockade at the entrance of Bunnings in Traralgon in protest of the hardware giant’s decision to stop sourcing timber from VicForests.

Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union national secretary Michael O’Connor said it was “a sign of things to come” if the hardware giant refuses to reverse the ban on local timber.

“Timber workers will not sit back and be pushed around by big end of town fat cats like those in Bunnings and Wesfarmers head offices,” he said.

“Regional Victoria is facing a jobs crisis, Bunnings’ short-sighted decision has added to the continued uncertainty in the industry and contractors are bearing the brunt of this.”

Community advocate Felicia Stevenson, whose husband and sons work in logging, told media at the blockade that Bunnings owed local industry an explanation.

“Bunnings need to explain why they have taken a hard-line against local workers, contractors and businesses,” Ms Stevenson said. “(This is) a line which decimates jobs, families and communities and given themselves the green light to import timber from Indonesian rainforests.

“It’s very important to keep the timber industry here, we’ve got small timber towns that rely on this. Shops will close, schools will close, and it’s going to be devastating as a whole.

“We want the public to get behind us and we’re here to let Bunnings know this isn’t it.”

But Bunnings Director of Merchandise Phil Bishop maintained the chain would not switch to sourcing all of its hardwood from overseas.

He said they were working closely with industry to discuss sourcing timber from alternative sources in order to maintain the sale of Australian products.

Bupa Traralgon is in the spotlight

Renewable projects a spark for the Valley

AGED care facility Bupa Traralgon has activated its outbreak management plan after a health professional who visited the centre tested positive for coronavirus.

All staff and residents of Bupa Traralgon will be tested in the coming days for COVID-19 in light of the result.

The health professional, who was asymptomatic at the time, visited the Park Lane facility on Thursday, July 16.

Bupa’s Outbreak Management Plan includes deep cleaning of the home, requiring staff continue to wear personal protective equipment and separating groups within the home.

A Bupa spokesperson said the Traralgon facility had been closed to visitors since July 8 and that anyone entering the building has their temperature taken on arrival. “We have also been reinforcing hand hygiene and infection control measures, and ensuring nobody enters the home if they are unwell or have any symptoms,� the spokesperson said. “It’s likely the visiting external health professional had contact with some residents.

As a precaution, all residents and employees will be tested. “We have activated our Outbreak Management Plan and are working closely with the Public Health Unit and Commonwealth Department of Health to help protect the health and safety of our residents. “We are closely monitoring the health of all residents with twice daily clinical observations (and) we are in close contact with our residents and their families to ensure that they have up to date information.�

Bupa said further details about the health professional cannot be shared due to privacy reasons.

Precautions will remain in place indefinitely, depending on testing results and advice from the government.

Fourth active case revealed

A NEW case of coronavirus has been recorded in the Latrobe Valley yesterday, taking the region’s active cases to four.

It comes as Victoria recorded 484 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, the highest of any day of the pandemic to date.

The overall number of cases in Latrobe since the start of the pandemic has climbed to 13.

Premier Daniel Andrews this morning warned a six-week lockdown in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire could “run much longer� if COVID-19 infections continue to climb at current rates.

Mr Andrews declared the “very stark figures� needed to be “confronted head on�, but stopped short of pointing to a possible a New Zealand-style Stage 4 lockdown.

nine in 10 people ... did not isolate between when they first felt sick and when they first went to get the test,� Mr Andrews said. “People have felt unwell and have just going about their

business, they have been at the height of their infectivity and continued on as usual. “The one and only thing you can and must do when you feel sick is to go and get tested, nothing else is unacceptable. “One in two people waiting for results are going about their business as usual and behaving as if this wasn’t a global pandemic, and that is unacceptable.�

Despite comparatively low case numbers, the government will continue to closely monitor the spread of the virus in regional Victoria. “We’re watching every case in regional Victoria very, very closely,� Mr Andrews told media on Monday. “We’re grateful for people in regional Victoria going out and getting tested ... and we are asking people to wear a mask when they’re out and about.

Walhalla Goldfields Railway stung by theft

THE Walhalla Goldfields Railway is imploring locals to be on the lookout for stolen tools after the not-for-profit volunteer group was hit by thieves last week.

Railway office manager Lynda George said volunteers were still assessing what was stolen, but estimated it would cost thousands of dollars to replace items and beef-up security.

Ms George said thieves had broken into the Thomson Station shed and had

taken a tool box with specialised tools to work on diesel engines, and had also attempted to take an engine battery. “This is very disheartening for the crew, they are all volunteers and we’ve had no income since March and now we have to go out and buy all the tools,� Ms George said. “There could still be missing items.The men had been coming in and replacing sleepers and starting up the engines so they will be ready to go when we can start running again.�

Ms George said the heritage railway

had been hit by the double whammy of lost income from a tourist downturn from the summer bushfires and COVID-19.

The railway was also broken into eight months ago when thieves took a chainsaw and about $5000 worth of tools. “It’s like pinching candy from a baby.

Our income is down in the past couple of years and now we have to eat into our meagre savings to buy more tools and install more security,� she said. “It’s so disheartening. We are letting second-hand dealers know and looking at buy-sell-swap sites, as we may catch

them trying to flog off what was stolen.�

However, Ms George said there was a silver lining to the incident with an outpouring of support from the community.

She said this included offers from local businesses, new volunteers signing up, and a $1000 donation from Queensland. “This has been uplifting, with all the sadness and in this robbery we see that people are being generous.The majority of people are good and want to help,� she said.

NEW economic modelling has found that investment in large-scale renewable energy projects could create jobs in Gippsland, accelerating the region’s economic recovery.

The Climate Council’s Clean Jobs Plan found that 20,000 jobs can be created in Victoria, rapidly getting people back into the workforce while also tackling climate change.

The report identified major potential projects in the Latrobe Valley, including a proposed floating solar farm on the former Hazelwood mine pit.

Climate Council chief executive Amanda McKenzie said the state government could accelerate a number of renewable projects in Gippsland and create local jobs that tackle climate change. The Clean Jobs Plan found up to 4000 jobs in Victoria could be created in large-scale renewable energy, transmission and battery storage.

Some jobs could be created now and all would be created within three years.

It also found 2200 jobs could be created in in active and public transport, with 2000 jobs in urban and peri-urban gardens and up to 450 jobs in education and training.

Large-scale projects such as the Gippsland Renewable Energy Project would be one of the big-ticket items, creating thousands of jobs in construction, engineering, and administration.

The report also found every dollar of public investment in large scale renewables would unlock $3 of private investment in the economy, Latrobe Community Power Hub project manager Chris Barfoot welcomed the Clean Jobs Plan, saying it showed that renewables were the path to a prosperous future for Gippsland. “Our area has been hit hard by COVID-19, and we urgently need a plan for the transition of the coal workforce, particularly as the closure date for Yallourn power station draws near,� Mr Barfoot said. “This plan shows why state and federal government investment in renewable energy in Gippsland is crucial to put us on the path to economic recovery.�

Mr Barfoot said Gippsland would be the “perfect site� for a Renewable Energy Zone, attracting billions in investment and local jobs to the region. “We have the transmission infrastructure, a skilled and adaptable local workforce and large-scale projects ready to go. We just need to flick the energy switch.�

Clarity needed on forestry agreements

THE way has been potentially cleared to ensure the future of Gippslandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s native forest industry through changes to eliminate anomalies in a federal environmental law.

Professor Graeme Samuelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interim report into the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act has backed the need for clarity around Regional Forest Agreements, which govern timber harvesting in Victoria.

This follows the decision in May by the Federal Court, which ruled that state-owned timber company VicForests breached environmental laws by harvesting sections of the Central Highlands inhabited by the critically endangered Leadbeaterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possum.

Mr Samuel said the EPBC Act recognised the RFA Act, and additional assessment and approvals were not required for forest activities under the RFA. Exceptions were operations in a World Heritage property or a Ramsar wetland.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;These settings are colloquially referred to as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;RFA exemptionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, which is somewhat of a misnomer,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Mr Samuel said legal ambiguities in the relationship between the EPBC and RFA Acts should be clarified so that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the Commonwealthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interests in protecting the environment intact with the RFA framework in a â&#x20AC;&#x153;streamlined wayâ&#x20AC;?.

The report also recommends that the Act be amended to establish â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;single touch approvalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and bilateral agreements with state and territory governments, as RFAs do.This model reduces duplication and strikes the right balance between environmental, economic and social outcomes.

Australian Forest Products Association chief executive officer Ross Hampton said the Federal Court decision had created uncertainty around RFAs nationally. He called for the EPBC Act to be amended to reaffirm the intent of the RFAs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;RFAs are required by law to be independently reviewed every five

years, and all reviews have found they are meeting or exceeding all environmental objectives, while providing a level of certainty to industry,â&#x20AC;? Mr Hampton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, the Federal Court decision has created enormous challenges for the future of Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sustainable hardwood timber industry,â&#x20AC;? he said, despite the fact that VicForests was appealing against the decision.

Mr Hampton said the uncertainty could be addressed if the federal government urgently amended section 38 of the EPBC Act to affirm and clarify the Commonwealthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intent regarding RFAs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That would make it explicit that forestry operations in RFA regions are exempt from the Act, and that compliance matters are to be dealt with through the state regulatory framework and do not invalidate the RFA provisions,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Mr Hampton said the minor amendments to clarify the intent of the RFA exemptions should be dealt with urgently and separately to the

EPBC process. The Federal Court found that the EPBC Act applied to VicForestsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; operation because harvesting at 26 coupes was in breach of the code of practice that govern forestry management, and that its operations at a further 41 coupes were unlikely to comply.

All of the coupes are home to either the Leadbeaterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possum or the threatened greater glider.

A retired forester and author Mark Poynter said the Federal Court ruling was based on a literal interpretation of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;precautionary principleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that was â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;out-of-stepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with past interpretations. There were strong grounds for an appeal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The precedent is the Weilangta Forest case in Tasmania in 2007-08, where a similar initial ruling was overturned on appeal,â&#x20AC;? he said.

This was based largely on a concern that a literal interpretation of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;precautionary principleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; could make other resource uses such as mining or farming unworkable, he said.

TO help stop the spread of coronavirus, the state government has urged regional Victorians to wear mask masks when it is not possible to maintain adequate social distancing.

While medical grade masks are now mandatory in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, there are ways to make simple face coverings using items you might find around the home.

Bandanas and scarves can be tied around the nose and mouth or, if you have some odd socks lying around, you can fashion them into comfortable masks using just a pair of scissors.

LATROBE City councillor Kellie O’Callaghan has created a social media database to help residents acquire masks. #MaskUpLatrobe includes a list of locally made masks and resources to ensure that people in the Latrobe Valley can obtain masks regardless of their circumstances.

“We want everyone to be successful and get masks but if they are looking to purchase that they are in a position to do that locally,” Cr O’Callaghan said.

“We wanted to create the easiest pathway and list the easiest way to use trusted places for people to get masks.

“We are aware that its a mandatory requirement in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire and it’s not mandatory here.

“But, there are people in this area that can’t social distance or like me have ongoing treatments and it’s safer for us, when we go to the community and do essential jobs that we wear masks and we have the broader community looking after us by also wearing masks.”

Cr O’Callaghan said the list was also a tool to help people who aren’t in the position to buy a mask find alternative arrangements.

“If you are someone who can’t purchase a mask they can find someone that is in a position to gift one to them and that is the great luxury,” she said.

“That’s why using social media is so great, because people are so good at adapting information.

“For example people are sharing the sock mask pattern which is a no-sew way of making masks for those who can’t sew or don’t have access to materials.”

OSMI Australia have designed a Community Benefits Scheme for the Delburn Wind Farm.

The benefits scheme includes three main aspects, neighbourhood profit sharing, a community development fund and community co-investment opportunities.

The neighbourhood profit sharing would see resident living within 2km of a turbine receive between $2500 and $6500 depending on the number of turbines within 2km of their home.

An amount of $500,000 indexed annually- will be set

aside for the neighbourhood profit sharing and could be extended to people living further away.

A community development fund will be established to support community focused projects focused on sustainability and community health and well-being.

OSMI will invest $750 per megawatt installed ($150,000 per year based on a 200 megawatt project) into the community surrounding the Delburn Wind Farm.

These projects should

contribute to building sustainable communities, enhancing community safety and wellbeing, supporting community education or enhancing the natural environment.

Commencing in 2020/21, OSMI will allocate $10,000 per annum to the Community Development Fund until the project has commenced construction.

Shots fired into a home in Morwell

POLICE are appealing for information after shots were fired into a residence in Morwell last week.

At about 3am on Friday, July 17 police say “one or two” shots were fired into a house on Buna Street.

No one was injured in the incident but the occupants were home at the time.

POLICE are appealing for information after fire broke out at a complex in Morwell last week.

Emergency services were called to residential block Travers Street on Friday, July 17 at about 3am to find one of the four units alight.

Woman wanted over Traralgon car theft

POLICE have released an image of a woman they wish to speak to in relation to the theft of vehicle from a car park in Traralgon last week.

The red Ford SUV was stolen from the Woolworths car park on Seymour Street at about 3pm on Sunday, July 12, and police believe the woman pictured may be able to assist with the investigation.

Virus testing is needed at checkpoints

THE Australian Medical Association Victoria is calling for coronavirus testing at regional checkpoints.

AMA Victoria president associate professor Julian Rait said testing at these checkpoints would give people travelling to regional Victoria for essential reasons an opportunity to be tested before entering vulnerable areas.

Prof Rait said providing enroute testing would reduce the risk of people in Melbourne bringing the virus into regional areas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is not just areas like Geelong or Ballarat, but also into the Latrobe Valley, especially in the case of the City of Casey which is one of the more concentrated areas around Melbourne with coronavirus cases, which is right on the Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doorstep,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Latrobe Valley has very few cases but it only takes one of these super spreaders to go out to regional Victoria and next thing you know we have an outbreak.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Testing at the borders between Melbourne and regional Victoria would be a preventative measure and not compulsory, but a way to track those who have to travel between the two who may have mild symptoms that they can check, while isolating.â&#x20AC;?

Prof Rait added AMA Victoria would like to see more people in regional Victoria wearing face masks in public. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Premier (Daniel Andrews) suggested masking up in public and the AMA would like to see people wearing masks across the state,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the problem is that unless people embrace that measure there will be further lockdowns... regional areas are the next in line in terms of containing the virus which is why they should start considering border testing soon.â&#x20AC;?

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe is urging the state government to tighten public transport policing amid concerns people in restricted areas could be coming to regional Victoria via public transport.

Mr Northe said he had been contacted by a number of local residents and V/Line employees who feel more needs to be done to protect public transport staff and commuters from coronavirus in regional Victoria. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The major concern is that restricted people are travelling to and from Gippsland and other parts of regional Victoria and using public transport as a way of doing this,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have written urgently to the minister for public transport and shared a number of suggestions to eradicate such behaviors. One of those suggestions is that there is no valid

reason for commuters who reside between Pakenham and Melbourne to be using Gippsland V/Line services. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have access to the metro system there and should be using that.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Northe said he had talked to local police and was â&#x20AC;&#x153;glad with the feedback (he) receivedâ&#x20AC;?, but that more policing is needed at train stations in Gippsland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my view responsibility for enforcement sits with police PSOs and authorised transport officers and in my strong view they really need to put as many resources as they can into tackling this problem, and quickly,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It needs to be policed if there are legitimate reasons for person or persons travelling between Melbourne and the Gippsland regions, there needs to be further investigation into the legitimacy of that travel and if

anyone is caught doing the wrong thing they should be penalised.â&#x20AC;?

People living in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire are only allowed to leave home to shop for food and essentials, medical care and caregiving and work and study if they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it from home, and exercise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Victoria Police are monitoring those leaving Melbourne to ensure they are travelling for one of the reasons,â&#x20AC;? a Department of Transport spokesperson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Public transport services across the state continue to run as normal to support those who need to make essential journeys in line with the reasons to travel, except for V/Line services which usually cross the NSW border. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re keeping passengers and our frontline workers safe on public transport by cleaning high touch surfaces regularly and deep-cleaning

trains, trams and buses every night. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We ask passengers to help us by travelling outside the peak, practicing good hygiene, keeping distant from other commuters wherever possible and wearing masks when it is not possible.â&#x20AC;?

The Department of Transport added that Victoria Police are monitoring the perimeter of the restricted region, including major transport hubs and arterials, to ensure everyone is travelling for lawful reasons.

Anyone who breaches these directions faces on-the-spot fines of $1652 for individuals and $9913 for businesses.

Victoria Police said they are not disclosing the location of checks for people travelling on public transport as it would defeat the purpose of random checks.

JobKeeper, JobSeeker changes

THE federal government’s multibillion-dollar JobKeeper and JobSeeker schemes will be extended until March, but significant changes are set to take effect from the end of September.

JobKeeper will move from a flat rate of $1500 per fortnight for all eligible workers to a two-tiered payment system for full-time and part-time workers.

Payment will be reduced to $1200 per fortnight for full-time workers and $750 for those working less than 20 hours.

That will be revised again from January, down to $1000 for full-time workers and $650 for those working less than 20 hours.

The JobKeeper test will still apply, with businesses required to demonstrate a 30 per cent reduction in turnover for continued eligibility until the end of March.

A treasury review of the program at the mid-way point found JobKeeper had supported 960,000 businesses and 3.5 million workers.

“JobKeeper is doing its job and will continue to do its job through the decision we’re announcing,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

“The report of the program recommended we continue JobKeeper, and we shall, but it needs to be done in a way that is responsive to the circumstances.”

But Mr Morrison the current JobKeeper rate as one that was “never designed to be enduring”.

“This is burning cash, ratepayers’ money, to the tune of $11 billion a month,” he said.

“Ensuring we had one flat payment at the time ensured we were protecting our social security system.

“Now we’re in a position to run a twotier payment system - it was simple, it was deliverable.

“At the time we were very concerned about where the economy was heading ... this was about getting income support to people that were in desperate circumstances.”

Recipients will also be able to earn up to $300 per fortnight without their payments being impacted.

reconnect with job search services and be required to meet a monthly quota of job interviews.

“If there is a job to be offered ... it is a mutual obligation for those on JobSeeker to take those jobs on offer,” Mr Morrison said.

The second phase, from the end of September, will require recipients to move to a higher rate of job search and asset testing will also be reintroduced.

This will be re-evaluated at the end of the year.

A cashless society is not the right idea

HOWARD Lovell (letters to the editor, The Express, July 16) suggests that going to a cashless society would help Australia combat COVID-19, with additional benefits in reducing criminal activity.

On the matter of combating COVID-19, he provides no evidence.

Indeed, the poster child for a cashless society is Sweden.

With a population of 10 million, 76,000 cases and 5500 deaths, Sweden has a per capita performance worse than the US. Conversely, there are several countries in both Asia and Africa that use cash far more than Australia, with much better responses to COVID-19 than either Australia or Sweden.

First amongst them is Vietnam - a developing nation of 97 million that has a land border with China - which has only 381 cases and zero deaths.

On the matter of reducing criminal activity, it is not hard to think of multiple ways in which a ban on cash could be circumvented.

Becoming a cashless society would have the potential to create at least two major problems for decent, law-abiding citizens, however. Firstly, central banks and governments would be able to pursue the most irresponsible of monetary policies (and thus, fiscal policies) with complete abandon.

Zero interest rate policy (ZIRP) over the past decade or so has proven disastrous to ordinary citizens the world over, as have such things as bail-ins and â&#x20AC;&#x153;haircutsâ&#x20AC;? (a euphemism for outright confiscation of peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s savings). Removing cash would pave the way for the even more reckless concept of negative interest rate policy (NIRP).

The second, and more serious, concern about going cashless is that it would imperil the very freedom and existence of average citizens, especially if paired with

any kind of social credit system. Governments could â&#x20AC;&#x153;unpersonâ&#x20AC;? anyone they found troublesome; with the press of a button, people could have their electronic identities, including money, switched off. Ironically, this would have the effect of forcing people into illegal activity just to exist. The totalitarian states of the 20th century could only have imagined the kind of power granted by such policies as becoming a cashless society.

This is not hyperbole.

Totalitarian states rarely begin in such a manner; rather, they arrive there incrementally by promising to solve complex problems in very simple ways if only granted additional power.

Given the scant evidence in favour of becoming a cashless society, I would rather not take such risks.

Road safety?

HOW hypercritical of the local councils to say they are going to make roads safer around Moe, (The Express, Page 6, July 16) by making the speed limit 40 km/h. this will of course raise speeding revenue because most people will not stay at that speed unless they have the car on cruise control.

So instead of focusing on

â&#x20AC;&#x153;road safetyâ&#x20AC;?, why not focus on the real issues around the Moe CBD like trees planted between car spaces that will not allow you to open a rear door, very handy if you have a child in the back seat? NOT. Or try and get a wheelchair out with a tree next to your rear door, good luck.

These trees cause damage to cars and during certain times of the year the pollen drops onto your cars, causing paint damage.

So why not remove the hazardous trees or redesign the parking so that the trees are not an issue. Once again thinking by the local council demonstrates a lack of public concern, but then again, do we really matter to them? No. David Whittaker, Newborough

Best practice in focus

ASBESTOS has caused terrible damage to the people of the Valley.

Rates of asbestos related death are higher here than anywhere else in the state.

Real reason to be concerned about the demolition of Morwell Power Station, then.

Real reason to be comforted by the reassurances given by EBACâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s representatives.

At a public meeting in September 2018, the anxious community attendees were told that the power station buildings would be scaffolded and wrapped in plastic, with asbestos removed under negative air pressure.

As written in the press release of the time, the demolition permit was granted in part because it was accepted by Heritage Victoria executive director Steven Avery that, â&#x20AC;&#x153;asbestos existed within the exterior cladding of the power station as well as the internal structure and machinery ...â&#x20AC;?

Here we are in 2020, two chimneys have been brought down by controlled explosion, and the buildings are having their internal and external asbestos fabric removed.

Yet there appears to be demolition without negative air pressure.

It appears to be happening without the scaffolding and without the plastic wrap designed to keep us safe from those asbestos fibres.

Where is the appropriate, best practice, and promised precautionary action?

Was the asbestos risk to the community from the Morwell power station buildings overstated?

Or is the community not deserving of these important protective measures?

It canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be both. I believe we are deserving.

Deserving of honest answers, reputable behaviour and of a safe and valued community.

New president Zooms into office

ANOTHER local service club has improvised an important ceremony into an online event amid COVID-19 restrictions.

The Rotary Club of Morwell usually celebrates its annual changeover with a dinner function, however, this year the ceremony was held online

by Zoom last week.

Attended by members, guests and family members, the changeover for the Morwell Rotary Club involved outgoing president Dave Swainsbury handing over his presidency to incoming president Mike Answerth.

Rotary Assistant Governor for District 9820 Tim Wills performed the induction ceremony.

The outgoing and incoming presidents both joined the meeting from the same location so they could transfer the presidential collar, while Mr Wills read the induction virtually.

A major feature of Mr Swainsbury’s 2019/20 presidency was continuing the #SayNO2FamilyViolence campaign, which he launched as club service director in 2018.

Mr Answerth says the campaign will continue this year.

Incoming president Mr Answerth has previously been secretary of the Morwell Rotary Club, and has been a Rotarian for 31 years, although he joined the Morwell Rotary Club only six years ago.

Mr Answerth praised Mr Swainsbury for his leadership over the past 12 months while facing personal health issues as well as COVID-19 restrictions.

“We face a challenging Rotary year with the coronavirus pandemic restrictions having a big impact on our ability to do community projects and conduct our usual fund raising activities,” Mr Answerth said.

“But as Rotarians we have never shied away from challenges and Rotary has a reputation for being resilient and innovative.”

I have been in awe of the resilience that the Latrobe Valley community has displayed during challenging times, and the current COVID-19 pandemic has proved no exception. Latrobe City asked to back reform alliance

AN anti-pokies group is asking Latrobe City Council to jump aboard an alliance to help tackle gambling harms in the community.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform has sought $15,000 from the council to become part of a leadership group made up of 23 Victorian councils hit hard by pokies.

The funds from Latrobe Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s membership would be used on coordinated advocacy, awareness campaigns, local issues or reviewing public policy.

Gambling harm advisor Katherine Copsey fronted Latrobe City councillors at a council budget submissions meeting on Monday.

Ms Copsey described last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pokies expenditure within the municipality as â&#x20AC;&#x153;pretty shockingâ&#x20AC;? at $46 million - or an average of $126,000 per day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know this is a difficult year for councils in forming budgets, with the extreme financial impact that gambling harm is already having from pokies alone on people in Latrobe,â&#x20AC;? Ms Copsey said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know that this is linked to other serious issues council is no doubt seeking to tackle, like homelessness, family violence and mental health issues.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Copsey said the alliance had launched a campaign to end gambling ads and harm from online gambling, particularly with children exposed to the normalisation of gambling ads in sport.

She said data was yet to be released on the benefits from pokies venues being closed due to COVID-19, or any switch to online gambling as a result.

Advocates had told her pokies venue shuts enabled some people to have a break from gambling for the first time in many years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A mother was able to for the first time to buy Easter eggs for her kids instead of that money going into pokies,â&#x20AC;? she said.

EnviroMicroBio breakthrough

A STARTUP Gippsland alumni has developed a cutting edge method for testing wastewater for COVID-19.

Founder and chief scientist of EnviroMicroBio Emily Scholes set out to assist businesses who are at risk of being shut down in the event of a virus outbreak. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Water testing will allow companies to keep tabs on their entire organisation easily, without being invasive or requiring specific consent,â&#x20AC;? Ms Scholes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not only will employees feel confident that their workplace is safe, but it will also help to de-risk organisations and allow them to uphold their reputation and willingness to stay safe.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Scholes has extensive experience in water and wastewater testing and management and a background in membrane science.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;After reading of the success in wastewater testing in the Netherlands, and with a large amount of work in microbial control for industrial customers, I knew it was a service I could bring to market,â&#x20AC;? she said.

While the government is currently conducting some wastewater monitoring within major plants in Australia, EnviroMicroBio is specifically focused on providing this service to the businesses at risk. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those at an elevated risk such as large industries, call centres, corporate offices and boarding schools can potentially benefit from this testing breakthrough,â&#x20AC;? Ms Scholes said.

Sing us the song, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the choir

GIPPSLAND residents are being invited to join Federation University Australia students and staff in a new choir that aims to bring the community together in song.

Federation University and AGL Loy Yang have partnered to establish the Word of Mouth Chorus.

Rehearsals will be held online via Zoom, with physical rehearsals to be introduced when COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.

Federation University Associate Professor Rick Chew is the coordinator of the Word of Mouth Chorus and said the group was primarily designed to be a tool for community connectedness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My hope is that the choir is a

wellbeing initiative,â&#x20AC;? Mr Chew said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As far as Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m concerned, people I know - both staff students and the community - are struggling with the sense of isolation at the moment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe a community that sings together, stays together.â&#x20AC;?

The idea for the choir was formed as a way to bring together students from Federation Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ballarat and Gippsland campuses.

The group was going to meet locally for face-to-face sessions, but the concept became a virtual one when coronavirus restrictions were implemented. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the initiatives we decided on was the possibility of a chorus or choir down in Gippsland to extend our activities to the Latrobe Valley,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Chew said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;It will actually be a really good thing going online, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to keep that going when we finally can meet up.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Chew, who is also a composer, has found choir can be a powerful leveller for people from all walks of life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done a number of initiatives of this nature before, including a song to celebrate and look into how we can support our students through the marriage equality debate,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a way to have an hour-and-ahalf every week to get online, meet new people and have a sing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The idea is that this is for everybody - I very rarely met anybody who is really tone deaf.â&#x20AC;?

The choir will perform at community events throughout the year when

coronavirus restrictions are eased.

An online element will remain to ensure the choir is accessible to community members or others interested in participating.

Musical director Dave Barclay will lead the choir, which will sing arrangements of existing songs and new material.

Rehearsals will be held weekly on Thursdays from 7pm until 8.30pm.

All ages and skill levels are welcome and there is no audition process.

IT was with great excitement that all students recommenced on-site learning at St Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Primary School, Trafalgar.

The new student leaders are Charlie Donald, Tayla Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill and Patrick Kennedy who were proud to be chosen to lead the school into Term 3.

At St Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, senior students have the opportunity to lead the school and this provides a chance to show their individual strengths and leadership skills.

Christmas in The Boo called off ORGANISERS have announced that Christmas in The Boo for 2020 has been cancelled.

The Boo Events team held off making this decision for as long as possible, however given the latest impacts of the virus in Melbourne, it would be irresponsible to think that they could provide a safe environment for all stall holders and patrons.

Christmas in The Boo is about bringing people together to support small businesses, celebrate with family and friends and share the spirit of Christmas.

With social distancing and reduced attendance capacity it just would not be the same festival we’ve come to know and love!

The Boo Events team urged people to continue to support local small businesses at this time.

Many of these businesses rely on markets to earn an income so this year has been particularly tough for them!

Society pulls pin on planned return

THE Gippsland Vehicle Collection’s doors might have been closed over the lockdown period, but its volunteers were far from idle.

Maffra’s main attraction is back to its regular opening hours of 10am to 4pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday and when you walk through the doors, it is immediately clear that a lot of work has been going on.

“We have re-designed the entire entryway and retail area at the front of the Museum, partly to accommodate new social distancing and sanitising requirements and partly to complete a refresh that had been planned for a while,” GVC vice-president Peter Quennell said.

“The front counter and some shelves have been moved to provide sufficient room for people to wait for service, and the layout for the retail area has been changed to create much more open space for people to move around in.

“In line with the times we are living in, a screen has been installed at the counter and there is an area where hand sanitisers are provided.”

Sacred Heart Church to celebrate 50 years

Photography and artwork competition

THE Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve committee of management is holding a photograph and artwork competition for primary and secondary school students.

Students may enter either a photograph of nature taken within the reserve or an artwork inspired by nature within the reserve.

A selection of high quality entries will be used to produce a 2021 calendar featuring the reserve.

The committee has received funding from the CFA and EnergyAustralia to print 1000 copies of the calendar which will be distributed free within the local community.

There are great prizes to be won so get your entries in before the August 31 closing date.

Inner Gippsland Writeability Group workshop

THE Inner Gippsland Writeability Group is offering an online writing workshop free to people in Gippsland with a disability.

Ellena Savage will run a creative non-fiction workshop exploring two distinct lifewriting sub-genres: memoir and the personal essay.

You will learn about strategies commonly used in these genres, with examples, to begin developing writing of your own.

The workshop will be held tomorrow between 11am1pm. Ms Savage is an author and educator.

Her first essay collection, Blueberries, was published earlier this year.

CANCER Council Victoria has made the decision to cancel this year’s Latrobe Relay For Life in October due to uncertainty around restrictions on public gatherings as a result of COVID-19.

While recognising the importance of this much-loved event to the local community, Cancer Council Victoria community engagement manager Cara Davey said the safety and wellbeing of those involved was the most important consideration.

“Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our volunteers, staff and supporters. We are mindful that many who attend our events are older or may have compromised immune systems and are at a higher risk and we want to do our best to protect them,” she said.

“Please be assured that Cancer Council will continue to be present in the community, supporting all residents who rely on our services as normal. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has contributed to fundraising and planning for this event so far.”

Funds already raised this year, including registration fees, will go towards vital cancer research, prevention and support services for all those who are impacted by cancer.

Ms Davey encouraged the City of Latrobe community to continue supporting the 503 locals who are diagnosed with cancer each year by registering for next year’s event.

“We encourage everyone to register for the 2021 Latrobe Relay For Life and help fund vital support services and ground-breaking research into better ways to detect and treat cancer,” she said.

ARCH Graham took a sip from the little glass tumbler, then held it up to the kitchen light.

“Mmm” he murmured..finally..the taste and the colour were just right!

He called to his wife Aileen “You’ll never guess what I’ve just done!”

You could say this was the true beginning of what is now known as Aygee Gippsland.

It was 1950.

Post-war Australians were mightily relieved and the forgotten feeling of hope was returning, but many commodities were in short supply, and there was an abundance of opportunity for the business minded.

Arch Graham was a qualified chemist, and was working in this role at APM, but he had previous experience at a factory in Melbourne producing ingredients for breweries, soft drinks and cordial making.

Arch could see a need for flavour essences and liquid food colours for making milk bar syrups and cordials, and experimenting in his kitchen at Loch Park Road, Traralgon to make these products.

After months of trial and error, Arch’s Eureka moment (described above) finally arrived.

He had worked out and recorded formulae to make a full range of flavours and colours, and was ready to go into production.

But first, larger premises would be needed where a full production plant could be set up.

Easy! Arch simply moved into his garage!

This was a dual benefit, because his wife Aileen at last got her kitchen back.

No longer were her benches and tables covered with beakers, test tube samples and charts, although there still had to be a 60 gallon milk vat for washing bottles in the back yard.

It wasn’t long before production commenced, and when nearby stores discovered that high quality flavour essences and colours could be obtained locally, the business took off, and Arch needed help.

In 1951, he enticed his brother Allan and wife Isabella and two young children, and Arch and Allan’s parents, Arch snr and Ruth to move from Melbourne to join the firm.

It had to happen quickly, so after the addition of a caravan in the backyard, the new arrivals moved in with Arch and Aileen’s family at Loch Park Road, expanding the household to ten!

It was noticed that five of the family members had the initials “AG”, so the business name “Aygee” was an obvious choice.

Cordials and milk bar syrups were added to the product range, and in 1952, a purpose built factory was constructed in Tanjil Street Traralgon, managed by Allan.

This was a bold move for what was still a startup business, showing both confidence and business acumen.

Aygee was distributing its products ever

Dynasty: Allan Graham senior, Allan Graham junior and Arch Graham. more widely through Gippsland with Arch snr performing the role of chief salesman, and the business continued its rapid growth.

In 1955 the firm added “fizz” to its range with the creation of Aygee Aerated Waters, and in 1958 Aygee lemonade was awarded first prize at the Royal Melbourne Show.

This was a huge achievement, because the competition was open to the whole of Australia, and there were 17 other similar businesses in Gippsland alone. (By 2020, only Aygee was left standing).

It is clear from all this remarkable success that Aygee was turning out some high quality product, and it is no surprise that in the fiercely contested world soft drink market, the small country business came under the notice of the big players.

To use a local analogy, it was as if the little ship of Aygee had left the calm, familiar waters of the Gippsland Lakes, and passed through the Entrance out into the heaving seas of Bass Strait, connected thereby to the great oceans of the world.

This new paradigm brought fresh challenges for Aygee, sometimes in the form of giant competitors who would have been happy to see them close down, but there were also opportunities.

Not all such companies were bent on achieving monopoly.

The prestigious international company Schweppes was distributing its products to a handful of Gippsland outlets, but when Schweppes observed the much wider coverage and rapid growth of Aygee, in 1963 they appointed Aygee as their franchise bottler and distributor for the Gippsland Region.

In the same year Allan Graham junior joined the firm as a driver/salesman, and would later

become managing director. The alliance with Schweppes was based from the very beginning on respect and trust, and is still in place today.

It has been a boon for both firms, assisting each to grow their brands, and later was a bulwark for Aygee against more predatory competitors.

While the alignment with Schweppes was a major milestone in the Aygee story, it was not the only reason for the company’s success.

Aygee were a proactive and astute business, ever prepared to move with the times and look for new opportunities. They were forever growing, extending their territory and product range.

Along the way there have been many unforgettable moments and events; some momentous, some unusual (and with the passage of time, amusing), and some quite challenging.

Early on there were a couple of incidents involving Aygee trucks.

In 1958, an unmanned truck had rolled down a hill in Thorpdale and slammed into the Pub, much to the embarrassment of the driver who was at the bar and swore he had left the handbrake on.

In 1967, Aygee’s first ever brand new truck was at the tip offloading waste paper when the load caught fire with much damage to the truck but no one hurt.

In 1971, the company bought several glass fronted fridges for placement in venues to be stocked by Aygee, and postmix was added to the products offered.

The connection with Schweppes continued to bear fruit, when in 1972 Schweppes purchased the Tarax brand, which in later years was incorporated into the Aygee range.

In 1977, a two-acre site was purchased in

prime location on the corner of Eastern Road and the Princes Highway. A modern factory was built, and company still sits there.

The transformation of Aygee from an idea in Arch Graham’s mind to a dynamic, thriving local business was complete. But success does not come without challenge.

Allan Graham jnr, having not long been installed as managing director, was sitting in his shiny new office and he received a call from a senior Coca-Cola executive in Melbourne.

He explained to Allan that Gippsland Bottlers, Coca-Cola’s franchise bottler, had been taken over by Coca-Cola, that their product would henceforth be distributed from Melbourne, and that Aygee should get ready for some serious competition.

He said he didn’t think Aygee would survive, and that Allan would be better off to just close the doors and walk away.

This was typical of many exchanges between the two companies over the next few years, but Allan had plenty of challenges to deal with without wasting energy on pursuing a rivalry.

Instead he stayed focussed on what had made Aygee successful and kept driving the company forward, although there were always new challenges coming along.

Many readers will remember the rise of supermarkets and convenience stores from around 1983, and the devastating effect this had on milk bars and corner stores, most of which closed never to reopen.

With each closure, Aygee lost another valuable customer, then had to learn how to compete with the supermarkets, who could buy in bulk direct from suppliers.

In 1980, Aygee was appointed a commission agent for United Distillers, and in 1985 they purchased local firm Crystal Cordials,

Family affair: Paul Graham, Allan Graham junior and Glenn Graham. picking up the Tarax brand, and two valuable employees who each worked in key roles at Aygee for more than 20 years.

In 1995, Aygee added a full range of confectionary to its range, including Cadbury, Mars, Nestle and Smith’s.

But the wheels of world business never stop, and big trouble was brewing.

In 1998, Coca-Cola bought Schweppes worldwide, which would have given Coca-Cola an 85 per cent share of the Australian soft drink market.

It was highly unlikely Coca-Cola would continue the Schweppes label, which would have been a massive hit to Aygee’s product range. It looked like the Coke executive’s prediction of 20 years earlier would come true.

But Aygee decided to fight, and lodged a complaint with Australia’s competition regulator, the ACCC. chairman Alan Fels contacted Aygee directly, and after consideration, the takeover was disallowed in Australia.

Aygee had dodged an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile!

Those big wheels kept turning, although this time in Aygee’s favour.

In 2000, Schweppes Australia acquired the rights to Pepsi in Australia, and also bought the Spring Valley fruit juice business. Both of these moves added to Aygee’s range.

In 2010, Schweppes Australia was purchased

by Japanese company Asahi, who had no intention of discontinuing the Schweppes label, which was good for Aygee.

The future was looking rosy, and Aygee continued to expand, by now firmly established as the number one soft drink and confectionary distributor in Gippsland.

So why has Aygee been so successful?

Yes there have been brilliant business skills, but the company could have sold out many times and walked off into the sunset with a stack of money to retire on. They never did that. Why not?

Having watched the progress of Aygee for 46 years (since arriving in the Valley in ‘74), and getting to know many of its owners and employees quite well, I would like to offer an explanation.

They believed in looking after their clients, big and small, developing a sincere personal relationship based on trust and goodwill-going out of their way to make sure deliveries were correct and on time.

They also applied this principle to their staff, to whom they gave respect, encouragement, acknowledgement, generous reward, kindness, and, when necessary, tender loving care.

In return the staff were intensely loyal, and always wanted to put their best foot forward for the boss.

In my view a key sign of a successful company is having long term staff, and this is certainly true of Aygee, with a great many employees serving the company for 20 years of more.

With core principles like these in place, it is little wonder to me that Aygee has been so successful for so long. Who wouldn’t want to work for, or deal with, a company like that?

Finally, they loved Gippsland, especially their town of origin, Traralgon, and the Valley.

It had been good to them-they wanted to see all of it thrive, and never wanted to be anywhere else.

Aygee has always been very community minded, and have assisted countless sporting clubs and events over the years, either with cash sponsorship or supplying free soft drinks or merchandise.

Within only the last year, catastrophic bushfires in East Gippsland have destroyed the peak trading season for Aygee and many businesses, and now COVID-19 has brought business around the world to a halt.

Aygee has a history of overcoming challenges

and is determined to hold firm, firm and to protect the jobs of all of its employees.

This year, Aygee completes it’s 70th year of continuous operation, which is a phenomenal achievement.

How many local businesses can you think of that have done that?

Even more remarkable is that they are still wholly owned within the original family.

After 53 years service, Allan jnr retired in 2016, and nowadays Aygee is jointly run by Allan’s brother Paul and Allan’s son Glenn, who between them have 70 years service.

As it stands today, Aygee has 32 staff, more than 100 suppliers, a wide product range, more than 1500 clients and is the largest confectionary, snack food and beverage distributor in Eastern Victoria.

For me however, there is something which stands out above all this, It is the manner in which they have conducted their business. I would use the word “generous”.

They have been unfailingly generous to all who crossed their path, however big or however small.

This was not always easy, like when an executive from a giant global company tells you they are bent on closing you down.

Recently, I had a man helping me tidy up the garden around my house. I know him quite well and I told him I was writing this piece about Aygee.

“Oh yeah” he said “We used to mow their lawns up at Eastern Road..when it was hot they would come out and tell us we could help ourselves to as many cold drinks as we wanted!..we loved working for them!”

Yep, that’s typical Aygee.

As locals, we can be proud of Aygee for what they have achieved, and for showing us that you can be highly successful in business without surrendering your humanity.

A Saturday ritual’s absence now felt OPINION

SURELY this writer is not the only one who is missing spending part of a Saturday night navigating their way through SportsTG to see what happened across various grades and leagues on a particular round?

Internal dialogue when checking scores generally goes something like “that’s a paddlin” upon seeing one team dish out a flogging, “did they get up?”, before checking in vain if an underdog team had something to celebrate, or “that’s massive for them” after seeing either a slight upset or landmark win in a team’s season.

Delving deeper into the finer details of each game, most people

would surely think the following at some point: “they must have had a few out this week” after looking at a team list, “surely he’s too good to be playing twos” after seeing the same name pop up weeks on end, and “is he still playing? He would have to be in his 40s at least” when seeing that an old but familiar name has drifted forward to kick a cheeky goal.

Speaking of goals, no forward will ever admit it but they all do it, when they check other games to see if their spot on the leaderboard is in danger.

“Am I still on top?”, “should stay there for another week, we’re only playing such and such”, “hopefully it rains when they play a good team”.

And of course, everyone knows the players listed as the six best aren’t always the ones that had the most impact.

Scrolling through the best players can often be a painful exercise.

“Don’t know what game they were watching”, “thought old mate was very stiff to miss out”, “seriously, who does the vote cards?”.

At least we will be able to resume checking the scores on MyCricket every Saturday night this cricket season ... hopefully.

Valley footballers in impressive wins FOOTBALL

LATROBE Valley exports Tim Membrey and Ben Ainsworth featured in winning teams during an elongated Round 7 of AFL action.

Membrey’s St Kilda team had to wait until Monday before recording a 23-point win against bottom side Adelaide.

The Saints led at every change on the way to the 12.6 (78) to 8.7 (55) success.

On a difficult night for tall forwards, Membrey finished with seven possessions and a goal.

The Traralgon export is poised to play his 100th AFL game on Saturday against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.

Membrey, 26, has emerged as a quality player at AFL level since joining St Kilda after starting his career at Sydney.

The 190cm key forward played one game for the Swans, then a powerhouse of the competition, before joining the Saints.

Membrey has twice booted 44 goals in a season (2016 and 2019).

Morwell’s Ben Ainsworth gathered 15 touches as Gold Coast defeated Sydney by 32 points at the SCG. The Suns led by just two points at the first change, but dictated proceedings from that point, winning 13.14 (92) to 9.6 (60).

Both St Kilda and Gold Coast occupy spots in the top eight.

The Saints are sixth with four wins, just ahead of the seventh-placed Suns due to superior percentage.

The region’s other exports Changkuoth Jiath (Hawthorn), Sam Skinner (Brisbane Lions) and Sam Flanders (Gold Coast) are all fit and pressing for senior selection.

Morwell defender Jiath could earn a recall to senior level after the Hawks were on the receiving end of a 43-point hiding from Melbourne last weekend.

Newborough talent Skinner continues to bide his time at Brisbane, with the Lions side a mighty hard one to break into.

Brisbane occupies second spot on the ladder behind Port Adelaide and recorded a 20-point win against GWS last weekend.

PAX Hill sits on top of the Under16 ladder following a 99-point win against Southside at Apex Park on Sunday.

Six goals from Oscar Bradford proved one of the major talking points of the 16.16 (112) to 2.1 (13) success.

Pax Hill set the tone early, restricting Southside to a solitary behind in the first term as they bagged five goals of their own.

The Saints were well-served by River O’Brien and Riley Shaw, and finished the game with eight individual goalkickers.

Brody Bye continued his good form, snagging three goals for the winners.

Heyfield was the scene of a thriller where the Roos defeated TEDAS by a point.

The home side’s accuracy proved decisive in the 7.5 (47) to 6.10 (46) success.

In the other matches, Maffra defeated Police Boys by 42 points, while College took the show on the road, defeating Sale City 10.9 (69) to 1.1 (7).

Charlie Dillow and Brad Nikolajew

were the two standouts for College.

In the Under-14 competition, Pax Hill, West End and Combined Saints recorded wins.

The Saints held off Southside by 11 points at Apex Park.

Noah Leslie made a big impression for Pax Hill, with Hudson Whateley again impressive.

Tyson Tangi and Ryan Peavey each booted two goals for the victorious Saints.

Tarkyn Shankland (two goals) impressed for Southside.

Five goals from Combined Saints ace Josh Colaciello headlined the 11.8 (74) to 6.5 (41) win against Churchill.

Jai Moloney and Charlie Lappin found plenty of the football for the winners, with Lucas Furlan slotting three majors.

West End defeated Police Boys 12.13 (85) to 9.5 (59).

The Bombers had a raft of quality contributors such as Noah Poel, Noah Wasalski (four goals), Ben Hagley, Isabelle Gissara (three goals), Ethan Roscoe and Jake Zappulla.

Brody Watson was in the thick of everything for Police Boys, capping a fine game with three goals.

Southside and TEDAS kept their

rivals scoreless in Under-12 action.

Southside prevailed by 63 points against Pax Hill.

Blair Roscoe and Marlon Neocleous (three goals) impressed for the victors, while Daniel Toms battled hard for Pax Hill.

TEDAS defeated Glengarry by 77 points.

The dynamic duo of Kade Jennings (five goals) and Brodie Adams (four goals) shone in the 11.11 (77) to 0.0 (0) contest.

Five goals from Jesse Nancarrow highlighted West End’s 45-point win against Police Boys.

Brody Stevenson was another to shine out in the 9.10 (64) to 3.1 (19) victory.

Ashlyn Murtagh played a quality game for Police Boys.

Combined Saints accounted for Churchill 10.5 (65) to 4.3 (27).

Lachlan Seeber (three goals) had a top day for the winners, while Jay Rogalsky earned the nod as Churchill’s best player.

Under-10 winners were Southside, Churchill, West End and Combined Saints.

Smith is at the double

NAMBROK trainer Lyn Smith had a day to remember at Sandown Park on Sunday.

Smith prepared a winning double with littermates Slick Intention and Swift Intention.

Slick Intention set the tone for what was to come by putting away a good field in the RSN Central Mixed 6/7 (515m).

The smart chaser led all the way from box one in a sharpish time of 29.99 seconds.

Swift Intention completed the brace with a smart win in the Secure Racing Logistics Restricted Win (595m).

He staved off Neymar Junior in a slugging go to the finish to seal the third win of his 14-start career in a time of 34.66 seconds.

Smith continued her winning run at Warragul on Tuesday when Demolition powered home with a Mixed 4/5 (460m).

Back to Sandown Park and Moe South trainer Kerry Minne landed a result when Go Tango took out a Grade 5 (595m) on Sunday.

The son of My Bro Fabio really powered to the line late for a fourlength success from Teardrop in a time of 34.84 seconds.

Go Tango has won seven of his 29 career starts.

Tuesday’s Warragul meeting also proved a good one for Tanjil South trainer Kate Gorman and Moe’s Lisa Davis.

The Gorman-trained Fenway Lights took out a 400m Grade 5 in 22.79 seconds, while the classy chaser Bring Your Banjo did the job again.

Bring Your Banjo has many admirers and justified his $1.50 favouritism with a three-length win in the Oaks Function Centre.

The smart daughter of Banjo Boy has won 18 of her 32 career starts, an outstanding record.

Rosedale’s Sharon-Lee Chignell prepared a winning treble at Sale on Sunday thanks to Stuart Lee Rose, Bobby Bean Rose and Panda Rose.

It was a big meeting for Rosedale trainers as Madalia Champ (John Connor) justified his ranking as the best bet, strolling home by six lengths and Zipping Samara took out the last for trainer Carolyn Jones.

A hectic week in September 1995

REMEMBER WHEN TRARALGON HARRIERS

SEPTEMBER 1995 - almost a quarter of a century ago - was a busy time for Victorian and local athletes.

Local distance runner Sandra Timmer-Arends narrowly defeated an elite field of runners to win the Victorian Half Marathon Championship in Melbourne on September 10.

Back then Sandra was mentored by the Traralgon Harriers coach, Laurie Edmondstone.

In the lead up to the half marathon championship, on Laurie’s advice, Sandra reduced her weekly training distance to 120km and included interval work and time trials, sharpening her speed.

She believed this made the difference in the championship race.

Running the three 7km laps of the course around Albert Park with the men’s field Sandra believed she was in the lead but at the 15km mark sighted a woman runner ahead.

After gradually closing the gap Sandra overtook Australian representative Susan Michelsson on the final hill and in an enthralling tussle held the lead to win by a slim six seconds with the third placegetter only 16 seconds further back.

It was not until after the event that Sandra learned that Michelsson had recently placed third at the Australian Half Marathon Championships in New South Wales.

Queen and King of the Mountain Run

BACK home in Traralgon the following weekend, Sandra, presumably tired following her win in the Victorian Championship only seven days earlier, still blitzed most of the male runners to finish fifth outright and win the Queen of the Mountain run to the summit of Mount Tassie.

In the arduous King & Queen of the Mountain uphill endurance race, with minimum recovery time,

Sandra still finished a mere seven minutes behind the men’s winner, veteran Trafalgar runner John Duck, for her second successive victory, breaking her own course record. And she won again the following year.

The Express reported at the time, “Following her recent Geoff Watt Memorial Half Marathon performance, the Victorian Championship and this week’s win in the King of the Mountain event TimmerArends looks destined for a bright future in distance running”.

The Express prediction was accurate.

Now the head of sport, health and physical education at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School in Traralgon, Sandra won many major distance events, was second in the 1999 Melbourne Marathon

behind Olympian Susan Hobson, has represented Australia overseas and holds Australian distance records.

The Express also reported, After a thirteen year absence from the event, veteran Latrobe Valley runner John Duck, competing in the open section, won last Sunday’s gruelling King of the Mountain race to the peak of Mt Tassie.

Duck finished the 30km course three minutes ahead of Graeme Alford with Tony Arrowsmith 27 seconds further back in third place.

Next to finish was Bruce Salisbury who captured the veteran’s trophy.

A physical education and sports consultant to Latrobe Valley schools, Duck claims to train and race sparingly - his former 180km a week program now reduced to a ‘mere’ 140km.

Duck has waited thirteen years to gain the victory which eluded him in 1982, when the course ran 31 kilometres from the Traralgon Post Office. Duck then came second to Paul O’Hare, running 1:52 to O’Hare’s 1 hour 49 minutes.

Neither time has been broken in the ensuing years and the race, reduced to 30km, now starts in Shakespeare Street near the football ground.

Belinda Issell, in her first attempt to “climb the mountain”, ran strongly to win the veteran women’s trophy, The Express concluded.

The King & Queen of the Mountain events are now 50-plus years old and still running.

And some of the keen competitors who ran back in 1995 still run it today - some in a relay team and a few all the way!

clearance to join neighbouring leagues, while others are “losing interest” in the MGFNL competition.

An EDFL base, it says, would favour seniors or reserves players on the Bloods’ list who live in Melbourne.

It also references the “strong netball competition” in the Ellinbank District Netball Association, the absence of jumper clashes and the revival of the Battle of Waterloo Cup with former MGFNL rivals Yarragon.

“The committee believes this is the

way forward for our club to give it a sustainable future, for our junior and senior football netball clubs, but also to keep providing a great social and family outlook for the residents of our growing town,” it said.

Publicity officer Rob Popplestone said the MGFNL, which would become an eight-team competition if Trafalgar departs, was informed of the club’s wishes by email earlier this week.

“The league intends to work hard to

keep Trafalgar part of the MGFNL,” Popplestone told The Express.

Trafalgar FNC members will vote on the resolution to join the Ellinbank league at a special general meeting on Thursday, July 30.

If the vote is passed, and in order for the move to materialise, the Ellinbank league must then vote accept Trafalgar and the Mid Gippsland league must vote to let the club go.

THE Ballarat Synthetic track is proving a happy hunting ground for the Peter Gelagotis stable.

Rock The Bowler delivered the Moe trainer’s second win at the track in the space of five days with a tough effort in the Porter Plant Benchmark 58 Handicap (1400m).

The four-year-old son of Fastnet Rock had jumped out well in readiness for his first-up assignment and was given a peach of a ride from jockey Anthony Darmanin.

Rock The Bowler ($17) was headed by favourite My Divas midway down the home straight but kicked back late to win by a short half-head, delighting stable spokesman Manny Gelagotis.

“He’s a typical Fastnet Rock, he’s a stunning animal,” he told Racing.com.

“We told the jockey to bounce out of the gates and ride him where he was comfortable, he just travelled so well and fortunately the cards fell our way.

“The horse dug deep, he had a real crack ... he ran the way he looked.”

Rock The Bowler is owned by a large group of owners, including Harvey Norman supremo Gerry Harvey and former AFL footballer Jason Love.

“I’m thrilled for the owners, we pleaded with them to not get rid of the horse,” Manny Gelagotis said.

“He definitely has scope.”

The win was the second from nine starts for Rock The Bowler, both coming on synthetic tracks.

His success followed the impressive effort of Creative Lad, who won at the same track on July 16.

The promising four-yearold from the Peter Gelagotis stable impressed as he won the Hygain Class 1 Handicap (1200m) on the synthetic track.

Creative Lad was sent out the $3.80 second-elect on the strength of his previous third at Moe in similar company and justified that faith when he held off The Sisters by a length.

The promising son of Denman now has two wins from six starts.

THE state government is supporting more women to take on leadership roles in sport thanks to the Change Our Game scholarship program.

Community Sport Minister Ros Spence earlier this week announced 40 recipients of the latest round of scholarships, with successful candidates to receive targeted assistance to build their skills and continue to advance their careers.

Since the scholarship program was introduced in 2018 more than 140 Victorian women working and volunteering across all levels of the sport and recreation sector have been given access to a range of professional development opportunities and training courses.

“These new scholarships are helping to level the playing field for Victorian women and girls across all tiers of sport and recreation,” Ms Spence said.

“As we start to rebuild from the coronavirus pandemic and community sport gets back on its feet, programs like this are vital as we champion gender equality in the community.”

Scholarships range from $2000 to $10,000 for individuals while eligible organisations may also apply for funding for group training or professional development worth up to $10,000.

The scholarship program is structured to ensure leadership opportunities are extended to women with varied skill sets and experience, ranging from community sport volunteers through to senior executives at state sporting associations.

THE Trafalgar Bloods have sensationally signalled their intent to breakaway from the Mid Gippsland Football Netball League.

In a letter to players and members penned by president Paul Marslen, the club laid out its reasons for wanting to join the neighbouring Ellinbank District football league and netball association.

Among them, a lingering sense of “significant uncertainty” with regard to the state of play under a touted potential full or partial merger of the Mid Gippsland and Alberton leagues.

“Since late 2017, football in the Mid Gippsland and Alberton football netball leagues has been under significant uncertainty about their composition and of how their respective leagues will be structured going forward,” the letter reads.

“The committees of the TFNC during this time believe that this uncertainty has had profound negative effect on the junior football competition and also impacted some clubs to field competitive senior and reserve teams in MGFL.” The letter also references “significant change in the population demographics” in Latrobe City as a catalyst for dwindling junior numbers within the league.

“This puts Trafalgar at a significant disadvantage with our growing population, we have been able to field a full complement of teams consistently across football and netball in previous years.”

As part of its reasoning for looking to Ellinbank, the club cites higher population growth in Baw Baw Shire and facilities and grounds that are “equal to, if not better than” those in the MGFNL. It also claims 10 Under-18 players have been cleared or are seeking
