Fallen: A tree ripped from its roots during the storm in Morwell. photograph liam durkin
THURSDAY night’s freak storm which lashed the Latrobe Valley was as intense as it was brief. What had been a warm, sunny day was overtaken by dark storm clouds, heavy rain, dust and huge gusts of wind about 6.30pm. However, it was all over half an hour later. At its peak, wind gusts of 96km/h were recorded at Latrobe Regional Airport as 10 millimetres of rain fell in the space of 12 minutes. The temperature plummeted six degrees from 22.5 degrees to 16.5 degrees as the storm brought a cool change. Morwell’s State Emergency Service (SES) proved the busiest unit throughout the Gippsland region, with 82 requests for assistance in the 24 hours up to 11am on Friday. Moe received 36 requests and Warragul 28.
Throughout Gippsland a total of 157 requests for assistance were recorded, 124 of which were for fallen trees and 23 with building damage. Thousands of properties lost power, in areas including Moe, Newborough, Morwell, Churchill, Boolarra, Budgeree, Hazelwood North, Willow Grove, Trafalgar, Thorpdale, Tanjil South and Yallourn North affected by unplanned outages according to AusNet Services. Images of trees ripped out from their roots, buildings with missing roofs and a mini tornado which formed in Traralgon did the rounds on social media as residents shared photographs as well as anecdotes. Delays were reported by motorists, with roads blocked by fallen trees and other debris from damaged buildings. The clean-up efforts began on Friday and will continue this week. MORE PHOTOS – PAGE 8
THREE people will stand trial for the alleged murder of Newborough man Jarrad Lovison. Andrew Price, 48, was ordered on Friday by magistrate Andrew Capell to stand trial for murder following the end of a lengthy committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Health issues with witness Patrick Alan saw the committal extended into a third week. Magistrate Capell earlier in the hearing, committed Jake Brown, 30, and Samantha Guillerme, 25, to stand trial. Mr Lovison’s body was found in bushland at Moondarra State Park, about 27km north of Moe on May 23, 2020, one month after he disappeared. Mr Brown and Ms Guillerme each pleaded not guilty to murder, with Mr Price yet to enter a plea. Ms Guillerme also entered a not guilty plea to manslaughter. Mr Price’s bail application was heard on Friday afternoon with Magistrate Capell reserving his judgement until today. A directions hearing for Mr Brown and Ms Guillerme is set to be held at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, December 8.
