High achiever: Chezka Capilitan was the dux of Lowanna College’s class of 2020. photograph supplied By KATE WITHERS

AFTER a year like no other the class of 2020 is toasting the completion of VCE and VCAL studies with many local students celebrating outstanding results. Lowanna College dux Chezka Capilitan achieved an ATAR of 89.70 and will study science at Monash University next year. “I’m really pleased with my score, and still considering my options for next year. I had considered Biomedical Science as one option, but I don’t want to go too narrow too early,” Chezka said. “I love the health science area, and there might be specialist fields I discover at uni that I haven’t thought of yet.” Chezka was also a role model within the Lowanna Sports Academy which allowed her to blend her passion for sport with academic study. “I really enjoyed the mix of the Sports Academy and my other subjects in Year 12, it really helped me stay balanced,” she said.

Another high achiever “pleasantly surprised” with her results was Shaylee McCarthy, who achieved an ATAR of 89.45. Shaylee initially enrolled at TAFE to study allied health next year, but is now considering occupational therapy or speech pathology at university. “I am really happy and surprised,” Shaylee said. “It was a challenging year and I have done much better than I thought I might.”

Traralgon College

PHOEBE Downey was the dux of Traralgon College for 2020 with a score of 88.55 and plans to pursue studies in the field of medicine or health. “I was really unsure about how I’d go, especially with the year we’ve had,” Phoebe said. “I’m really unsure about what I’ll study at the moment, it depends on where I get into and whether or not I can afford to move that far because for everything

I’m interested in I’d have to move to Melbourne or even interstate. “I’d really like to get into medicine, I don’t think my ATAR will be high enough, but I thought I did pretty well with my interviews and UCAT (admissions test), so we’ll see.” Having taken online subjects for the past three years, Phoebe was already familiar with the processes of online learning, which played to her advantage in 2020. “I already had a lot of experience learning online and talking to teachers that way and motivating myself, so I think I had a bit of an advantage compared to others who had never done it before,” she said. “Traralgon College is extremely proud of the achievements of all of our 2020 Year 12 students,” senior campus principal Michael Shone said. “This year our graduating students were confronted with unprecedented challenges as they completed they final year and all teachers and support staff

Kurnai College

KURNAI College dux Chloe Palmer received a score 89.45 and plans to study a Bachelor of Animation and Interactive Media at RMIT next year. “Coming into the year I kind of didn’t have high expectations, but towards the end I kind of thought between 80s and low-90s is what I wanted to get,” she said. Chloe studied English, Further Mathematics, History Revolutions, Visual Communication, Design and Art during VCE. Continued on page 8
