MAC’S POWER ENERGYAUSTRALIA has appointed Greg McIntyre as its new head of the Yallourn Power Station. He is the third head of Yallourn in the past 12 months. Mr McIntyre became acting head when former boss Julian Turecek left in July after 10 months in the job. Mr Turecek took on the role when Yallourn stalwart Mark Pearson retired last September after 15 years in the position and more than 40 years at the power station. Mr McIntyre was previously head

of the Mount Piper coal-fired power station in New South Wales for twoand-a-half years, and has managed other coal plants in Queensland and South Australia. The new skipper said he was aware of Yallourn’s proud history and involvement in the Latrobe Valley, and was looking forward to meeting with the local community. “Yallourn currently provides around 20 per cent of Victoria’s electricity demand,” Mr McIntyre said. “While maintaining our focus on safety, I’m looking forward to working

with the broader power station and mine team to ensure Yallourn continues to play its important role.” Mr McIntyre had previously led large-scale maintenance programs at Mount Piper. He had also helped hand over EnergyAustralia’s decommissioned Wallerawang Power Station to Greenspot Wallerawang Pty Ltd to turn the site into an industrial park. Mr McIntyre is taking over during a key time for Yallourn as the company is dealing with significant engineering issues with the Morwell River Diversion,

which cracked after heavy rain in June. The incident had caused coal production to be put on hold and parts of the mine to be evacuated while technical experts were assessing the situation. EnergyAustralia is also working towards a planned maintenance outage on one of its units towards the middle of September. Former head Mr Turecek led Yallourn through the announcement that the plant would retire in mid-2028. Mr Turecek also contributed to the company’s response to the Morwell River Diversion.

A NEW positive COVID-19 case in Traralgon was confirmed yesterday. COVID response commander Jeroen Weimar said the positive case travelled to Melbourne for a funeral. “We understand the acquisition was there (at the funeral),” Mr Weimar said. It is the first active case in Latrobe City since January 12 this year and featured among the 92 new locally-acquired infections recorded yesterday. Four Tier 2 exposure sites in Traralgon were yesterday identified with the confirmed case. They are Coles, Traralgon Centre Plaza, Sunday, August 22, 11.45am-12.25pm, the Traralgon Centre Plaza foodcourt (eastern end), Sunday, August 22, 12.25pm12.45pm as well as Friday, August 27, 11.10am-11.15am and Woolworths, Seymour Street, Monday, August 23, 5.20pm-5.45pm. Anyone who visited a Tier 2 exposure site during these times should urgently get a COVID-19 test and isolate until they receive a negative result. Pop-up testing sites at Latrobe Regional Hospital and the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium in Traralgon were inundated late yesterday. A third site was set to go live at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve this morning to meet the testing demand. The news of the local positive case arrived on the same day Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed the state’s lockdown would be extended beyond September 2. “We still have too many cases that are in the community for too long for us to be able to open up and give back to Victorians, whether it be in Melbourne or across the state,” he said. “As soon as we get advice and decisions are made, we will announce and give people as much notice as we can … it is not getting to the point where we have 1000 cases a day.”
