NUCLEAR DEBATE A future for nuclear power in Victoria is on the agenda again. A parliamentary inquiry is currently examining the merits of removing prohibitions put in place in 1983 surrounding nuclear activity. In a recent submission to the inquiry, local union officials suggested nuclear power could provide a just transition for Latrobe Valley coal workers. But whether a nuclear power plant has a ‘social licence’ to operate in our backyard, or any part of Australia for that matter, forms part of the inquiry’s discussion. Express reporter Michelle Slater examines both sides of the debate and whether nuclear will pick up the slack left by the phasing out of coal-fired power stations during the next three decades.

SPECIAL REPORT - PAGES 4-5

The direct replacement of coal-fired power stations T with w nuclear power could ensure a fair and just t transition for existing coal workers, their families and communities. Mining and Energy Division Victorian branch secretary Geoff Dyke Where it fits into the social licence for our area is W that we have high unemployment, as we mentioned, t and we have coal that is being shut down and a phased out. It is about jobs for us, not just the social licence. Most people in our industry understand it is a technology and it is safe. Former Morwell Labor candidate Mark Richards Renewable energy is affordable, low risk, clean and R popular. Nuclear is simply not. p Electrical Trades Union spokesperson
