LOCKDOWN will be in place for regional Victoria until at least September 2. The tighter measures came into effect at 1pm on Saturday, only a handful of hours after being announced by Premier Daniel Andrews. Mr Andrews said the statewide lockdown was pivotal to halt the spread of the Delta variant of coronavirus. “I apologise for the inconvenience of that. There is simply not a choice, but to follow the advice and act as we have,” Mr Andrews said on Saturday. “We know this is a big switch-up in regional Victoria. People need to follow the rules.” The five reasons to leave home are back in place, along with mandatory wearing of masks both indoors and outdoors.  To shop for essentials  For authorised work or permitted education  To provide care and for medical and compassionate reasons  Leaving to get vaccinated  To exercise for a maximum of two hours. The travel limit of 5km from your home has also returned. It brings regional Victoria in line with Melbourne, although the 9pm to 5am curfew does not apply outside metropolitan areas. The lockdown news proved yet another devastating blow to the business fraternity, especially those in the hospitality industry. The writing had been on the wall following a state government directive on Friday night for leagues to cancel community sport with immediate effect. Victoria reported 142 new COVID-19 infections across the weekend, with the outbreak in the regional town of Shepparton growing to 23. It lifts the tally of active cases in Victoria to 440. Schools will return to remote learning for most students, but stay open for vulnerable children and the children of authorised workers. Childcare centres will be closed, but open for vulnerable children and the children of authorised workers if they cannot be supervised at home. As part of the new guidelines, parents of students will need to get an authorised workers permit or authorised provider permit for their child to attend school.
