WELCOME TO OUR 26TH LUXURY SOUL WEEKENDER! A very happy New Year and it’s good to have you back here with us again, it seems so much has happened since we were all together here back in 2020. Who could ever have predicted what we would all be going through just a few weeks later..

These three days in Blackpool are such a great way to start the New Year enjoying such sublime soul music in superb surroundings with a very special vibe. As always this year we have our skilled line-up of DJs to entertain. Add that to the friendliest and most knowledgeable crowd around, and it’s a magical combination. This year we have many new guests attending, so if this is your first visit to our Luxury Soul Weekender, we warmly welcome you, and we hope this is a memorable one for you.

HEADLINING THIS WEEKEND: THE BRIT-FUNK ASSOCIATION.

We are delighted to welcome this unique collaboration of many of the UK’s most polished musicians featuring former members of Light Of The World, Incognito, HiTension, Beggar & Co. and Central Line. Each member an outstanding talent in their own right, with so many fabulous records now considered classics, I’m sure this will be one of our most memorable shows and and you can enjoy them all on stage together in The Royal from 9.30 pm on Saturday . Please respect the wishes of these artists and the musicians who have come long distances to entertain you, by NOT chattering during their 90-minute set. We do keep The Lounge and The Lancaster rooms open while the concert is in progress if you feel like a dance or a casual conversation. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

BOOKING YOUR MEALS

Dinners will be served from 17:30 through until 21.30, breakfasts start at 08:00 until Noon. Please check at the reception for details if you are accommodated at The Savoy.

Dinners at The Grand should be booked as soon as you have checked in, and as usual there is a desk set aside in reception to enable this.

LUXURY SOUL 2023 - IT’S OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY!

We are currently still in the process of planning for this very special anniversary, scheduled for the weekend of January 6th - 8th 2023. We will be able to announce more details over the coming weeks regarding accommodation and event packages. THE DJS AND MUSIC

For those of you here for your first Luxury Soul Weekender, we have five rooms in operation. The Queens is the home of Salsa, Soulful Dance and Jazzy vibes, while on the first floor you will find The Lounge. A wonderfully intimate room where you’ll be treated to classy, mellow soul during the afternoons, evenings and into the early hours. Downstairs In “Springs” we have our after-midnight nightclub vibe on Friday and Saturday, and in “The Lancaster “ we feature alternative styles such as Motown, Rare Groove 70s, Soulful

Ska, and Lover’s Rock. You will see in the programme we once again welcome our friends at Starpoint Radio for some late morning sets in The Lounge. In the Queens there’s the ever-popular Salsa lesson and session getting Saturday afternoon off to fine start followed by the sensational Saturday afternoon Frodisia Jazz session. At the same time in The Lancaster you don’t want miss a memorable Modern Soul Classics or the many specialist sets that are featured in this venue. Full details of all the opening times and DJ playing times are detailed here in your programme.

WRISTBANDS AND THE TRANSPORTATION OF ALCOHOL

Please note that once again we are rigorously checking wristbands, in particular within the Lounge area. It’s therefore vital that your wristband is clearly displayed at all times for Security purposes. We ask you to please also respect the management’s wishes that no alcohol privately purchased should be brought down from your room. Please consume in your room but then purchase any further drinks from the many bars in the hotel when you are in the venues or the Lounge.

THE LUXURY SOUL WEE

Brit funk is currently enjoying a huge resurgence, so there is no better time to present originators of the sound live on stage at our event - The Brit Funk Association. They comprise former original members of groups Beggar & Co, Hi-Tension, Central Line, Light of the World, and others joining the fraternity. Collectively they have amassed considerable national chart success and established a repertoire of 80s club classics we all know, play and enjoy through to this day.

Kenny Wellington, originally of Light Of The World, then Beggar & Co, says “We all come from the same scene and had both our own hits and tracks like ‘Peace On Earth’ or ‘London Town’ that became anthems because of regular plays over the years. It suddenly dawned on us, hold on a minute, we’ve got about all these great records between us, why don’t we join together? The Brit Funk Association officially became a band. After myself Baps, Breeze and I were constantly playing ‘Time’ and ‘Somebody Help Me Out’ we now have the luxury of having the McLeans’ on board to do ‘Power & Lightning’, ‘HiTension’, ‘Autumn Love’ and so many more.

EKENDER #26 LIVE ACT Paul McLean of Hi Tension says “We were polished like Earth Wind & Fire and Light of The World/ Beggar & Co were more free style like Kool & The Gang. So we thought let’s combine the two into one package.

Kenny continues “The reaction has exceeded our expectation. We always figured that as a concept, which we discussed a few months earlier, that for us, we liked each other’s repertoire so to combine it before an audience was a no brainer. It gave rise to live shows that highlight the range of material we share on stage while creating a vibrant live performance. We have Peter Hinds with us too, who was an original member of both Atmosfear and Incognito, and Ernie McKone who’s played with Galliano and Push.

“To see the reaction via the videos messages and gestures of good will of people saying how much they really enjoyed the gig has been amazing. We launched our live show at The Soul Survivors Awards, for us a great honour and we couldn’t have planned it better”.

These musicians had come ‘Full Circle’ giving them a concept and title for the debut Brit Funk Association album released in 2018 on Expansion Records. Such was the success that a follow up ‘Lifted’ came in 2020, the show Saturday night being the hits, the classics that inspired the group and their new songs too.
