“We can cater for wedding parties of two to 200, and we offer a full gamut of services,” Astrid continues. “We can

organise photographers, cake makers, flower arrangers and live music.

“We also take care of the legal side of the proceedings and arrange the marriage officiant.”

When it comes to adding decorations, history has already done the legwork.

With the graceful setting and vibrant colours of the ubiquitous tropical flowers, anything else might feel superfluous.

“It’s beautiful all by itself, whether people opt for the ceremony on the headland or on the beach between the stone pillars,” Astrid says. “All weddings are tailored to the couple’s desires; we had one recently where guests were presented with fresh coconut water to drink straight from the nut.

“We can also stage rehearsal dinners and organise day excursions for the couple and their parties,” she adds.

One final flourish is the wooden Thai long-tail boat which makes for a showstopping arrival for a bride. Combined with Admiral’s iconic sail loft pillars dating back to 1797, opportunities are abundant for photographs guaranteed to stand the test of time. n

Long hours and hard slog? Sure. But the practical experience and kernels of wisdom gleaned from the establishment’s seasoned pros? Priceless.

Time and toil, along with creativity and exacting standards, have helped make the Rocks Group’s restaurants a fulcrum of the region’s dining scene. Now the dynamic team behind Sheer Rocks and Kweiza Hughes

Catherine’s Café are paying it forward by helping train a new generation of young, up-and-coming professionals.

Joining forces with the country’s Hospitality Training Institute has seen several rising stars taken on as interns. The restaurants’ diverse offerings mean students can learn everything from front of house to the fast paced roles of the kitchens, and from the fine points of the boutiques to the nuts and bolts of administration.

For one ambitious novice, the venture has been enough to inspire her to take her studies all the way to university. “I’m so grateful that I’ve gotten the chance to work in the different departments of the company because it has allowed me to realise my passion for tourism,” Kweiza Hughes told Luxury Locations Magazine.

“It has heightened my interest in media, marketing and event planning and provoked some thought about how tourism can benefit independent restaurants and bars, not only seasonally

but yearly,” she continued.

“It’s been an eye-opening and fun experience, and now because of it I’m hoping to go to the University of the West Indies in Jamaica to study tourism management and media marketing.”

Fostering nascent talent is just one example of how the Rocks Group is leading the charge in giving back to the community. Catherine’s Café recently hosted a beach day with live music for disabled youngsters from local children’s home, the Care Project.

Meanwhile, it may be low season but that hasn’t stopped the team stepping things up a notch with a slew of summer specials. Both restaurants will remain open throughout the quieter months.

Catherine’s Café has a mouth-watering Prix Fixe menu; three courses and a glass of wine for just EC$100, or two courses and a glass of wine for EC$80.

Fans of Catherine’s Provencal-style fare can take their favourite flavours home thanks to the Pigeon Beach-based eatery’s Urchin Atelier which sells homemade jarred goodies, fresh baguettes, pressed

juices, salads, cheeses and more.

Visitors can snap up Rocks’ merchandise too, including the speciallycreated Coco Riko clothing line, CDs, towels, aprons and homeware.

The Rocks Box, a hand-picked selection of fine wine available by monthly subscription, has been revamped. Six bottles of sommelier-choice vino are just EC$260 a month and delivered direct to your door. Even better, if you fall in love with a particular variety, you can repurchase it again at the same discounted price.

Catherine’s head chef Jack is looking forward to showcasing his skills with popup ‘Jack’s Table’ events, pairing his exquisite creations with Rocks Box wines.

Over on the west coast, Sheer Rocks – declared best restaurant in the Caribbean

by USA Today’s ‘10Best’ – is once again running its popular Sangria Special offering a refreshing jug plus four tapas for EC$130. Its hillside setting with sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea just might be the finest place on earth at which to savour them. n

Mr Motivator How Sugar Ridge owner Aidan McCauley became an ambassador for change

T

here’s nothing like a not-so-subtle hint from a girlfriend that one’s svelte physique has become a little, well, portly to galvanise a man into action.

Dressed head to toe in athletic gear, enthusing about his upcoming 115-mile hike – to be followed by a quick trek up a 4,000-ft volcano as a “sort of side thing” – it’s hard to believe Sugar Ridge owner Aidan McCauley wasn’t always a green smoothie-guzzling endorphin junkie.

And while he certainly wouldn’t be the first to appreciate the physical and emotional benefits that a daily regimen

devoted to health and wellness bring, few have taken such strides towards taking others along for the ride.

“I was getting a bit chubby in my late 20s and my girlfriend at the time started to remark how much better I would look if I made a few changes,” Aidan smiles.

That first brush with the gym two decades ago quickly became a habit, one further enhanced a few years later when Aidan quit smoking and moved from the UK to Antigua.

looking to embrace their inner Jillian Michaels a head start. So much so that 2018 was officially named the region’s ‘year of wellness and rejuvenation’ by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO).

Rounding off 12 months of health and fitness-themed initiatives was a contest to declare one extraordinary person the region’s ‘wellness ambassador’.

With exceptional gym and spa facilities, diverse exercise classes in everything from yoga to Brazilian martial arts, and an abundance of vegan and vegetarian cuisine, Sugar Ridge has long placed wellbeing at the core of its operations. The resort also stages an annual beach clean-up and sponsors a variety of local educational and sporting ventures.

Aidan’s nomination by the Antigua Tourist Board for the ambassadorial 20

accolade may not have resulted in a win but he did place second (to Vincentian fitness group founder Lindon James) after two fierce and hotly-contested public voting rounds.

It was enough to inspire him to step things up a notch, both personally and through the resort and its offshoot, Hike Caribbean, which seeks to entice international adventurers to sample the region’s abundant and exhilarating walking trails.

First up was taking part in Antigua’s annual Rohrman Sprint Triathlon, comprising a 750-metre swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run, in which Aidan finished second.

That was followed a couple of weeks later by the Nevis to St Kitts Cross Channel Swim. Aidan completed the 2.5mile challenge in one hour and 24 mins,

taking 37th place out of 240 contestants.

Now he’s focussing his attention on expanding Hike Caribbean into Dominica which is where his love for trekking was first ignited.

“I have a real affinity with Dominica,” he explains. “I’m hunting out the best trails to walk, the best guides, and some great places to stay.”

Hike Caribbean “takes the headache out of planning” a trip by offering complete packages including international flights, accommodation and walking itineraries.

“It’s been so successful that a lot of people are now visiting Antigua just to hike,” Aidan says. “We hope to do the same for Dominica.”

research. The 14-segment trek begins in the southern fishing village of Scott’s Head and ends in the north at Cabrits National Park. Scaling St Vincent’s La Soufrière Volcano will round off an invigorating – and thoroughly exhausting – sojourn this summer.

Back at Sugar Ridge, the resort’s culinary team are committed to gratifying the palates of their eclectic guests with ever-increasing choices for vegans, vegetarians and carnivores alike at fine dining restaurant Carmichael’s and its more casual counterpart, Sugar Club.

‘The Shed’ yoga pavilion now offers up to 10 classes a week, along with other intriguing elements like Capoeira, spoken word presentations, meditation and drum circles. Many of its cultural events, including arts festival Bliss, are the result of a collaboration with local life coach Janis Hough.

“It’s about giving people choice – people expect to be able to maintain their lifestyle wherever they go – as well as the opportunity to sample something new,” Aidan says.

“I am less of a wellness ambassador and more of a practitioner. Many of the things we offer, such as yoga and our wellequipped gym, are because I personally wanted them,” he adds.

“It was a long time before I discovered the emotional benefits of exercise and meditation and how yoga can help beat stress. I love that I can help other people experience that too.” n

e tracked every punishing mile of their incredible journey comprising the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. We wept with them when their autopilot system failed, costing them valuable time. And we cheered as they crossed the final finishing line, arriving home in Nelson’s Dockyard after a torturous 34 days at sea.

Team Antigua Island Girls were the first all-female team from Antigua & Barbuda – and the first all-black team in the world – to row the vast width of the Atlantic Ocean.

Now back on dry land, we caught up with health and fitness trainer Kevinia Francis, RYA-certified yacht captain

Samara Emmanuel, wellness coach Elvira Bell, and swim coach and travel writer Christal Clashing to hear about the lessons learned during the ‘world’s toughest row’, how their lives have been impacted in its wake – and how they’re continuing to inspire others.

Kevinia Francis If you could relive any moment of the journey what would it be?

Definitely the end; our incredible welcome, stepping foot on land, greeting family and supporters, eating delicious local food. It was a combination of relief, joy, pride and happiness.

Which bit would you rather forget?

The lack of privacy with bucket/bathroom use and the unnecessary squabbles among the team.

Was there ever a moment when you doubted you’d finish?

No, just that we’d be delayed for far too long when there was no wind and when the autopilot system completely failed.

What’s key to maintaining harmony in such close quarters?

As captain, patience and tolerance were important, listening to and addressing concerns of all team members, being willing to share and sacrifice time or food when necessary and being able to communicate unpopular decisions with valid reason.

Would you do it again?

Yes, because I have a better understanding of the journey and the vessel, so I’d correct some of the mistakes made and possibly improve the time taken.

How much has life changed since the row?

I still haven’t gotten used to shaking strangers’ hands and taking pics everywhere and anywhere.

How are you continuing to inspire others?

As a personal trainer I always seek to do that, however, the row has increased my platform and made others more aware of my love for improving the quality of lives and assisting others in recognising their internal greatness.

You’ve been doing a lot of school tours too. What’s the first question the children ask?

Did we see sharks?! Unfortunately we didn’t, but we did see lots of dolphins. I tell them all ocean life is awesome, and usually harmless but curious, and to respect the ocean. We were harnessed in at all times and didn’t venture into their territory except

Elvira Bell If you could relive any moment of the journey what would it be?

I’ve always been fascinated with nature and wildlife, so it would be the moment where we were surrounded by many pods of different species of dolphins.

Which bit would you rather forget?

None. Each moment was either a lesson or a character-building experience.

What’s key to maintaining harmony in such close quarters?

Putting your emotions aside, not taking anything personally, being respectful of others and staying focused on the goal.

Would you do it again?

We’ve discussed as a team that we may explore the opportunity again, since we were unsuccessful at attaining our goal of being the first female team to cross the finish.

How much has your life changed since the row?

I feel as if I have a louder voice that people will listen to. I’m in a better position to have a more positive impact on people’s lives. I’m an example of anything is possible, with hard work and determination.

to clean the hull of the boat. My daughter’s concern was that I’m not a strong swimmer and she feared the worse if things went awry. I reassured her by going to swim lessons pre-race and made sure I was always harnessed to the safety lines.

How has the row changed you as a person?

It’s made me appreciate the simpler things in life; family, friends, food and sleep. You realise what’s important and what isn’t.

What was the most important lesson you learned along the way?

Accept God’s plan might differ to yours.

Be flexible with your goals because you’re not in control, so roll with the waves you receive and make the best of each day, regardless of the conditions.

How are you continuing to inspire others?

We took part in a few International Women’s Day celebrations and some school tours. We’re spreading the word that we were four females - three of us mothers - who came together with a common goal. We faced our deepest fears and overcame great challenges along the way.

Through great sacrifice, proper planning, the help of an amazing admin team, goal-setting, hard work, teamwork, staying focused and exercising resilience, we were able to achieve and complete our race. We’re encouraging others to feel the fear, face it and still chase your dreams.

How has your son responded to your achievement?

He’s been very strong and supportive and expressed how proud of me he is. My greatest moments were when he told me that he missed me and it was time for me to come home - and the first tight embrace we had upon my arrival.

Antigua & Barbuda has now had the oldest rowers to make it across the Atlantic and the country’s first all-female team. Who should be in the next one?

A young, enthused teenage team of both males and females. My advice would

be, preparation is key, take nothing for granted and enjoy the experience.

How has the row changed you?

I don’t take things too seriously, nor take the small simple things for granted, like family and friends, a warm bed to sleep in, a roof over my head and daily fresh food.

What was the most important lesson you learned along the way?

I learned to face my greatest fear claustrophobia. I’m living proof that I can overcome challenges, no matter how difficult or suffocating they appear to be no pun intended, haha.

Christal Clashing What are you doing now?

I’ve returned to teaching swimming through the national school programme and private classes. I’m also involved in creating some video and writing projects that are being prepared for funding.

How are you continuing to inspire others?

With my swim teaching, I predominantly teach kids and they always recognise me as an ‘Island Girl’. I want to help empower them to enjoy adventurous activities that being comfortable in the water affords. I know for a fact that without my background in swimming, doing this row would not have been so easy a choice as it was.

With my video and writing projects, I’m looking to inspire persons in the Caribbean to engage in exploratory and adventurous activities, particularly in the water, as we have some of the best beaches in the world and our sea life is under threat.

Would you do it again?

Never say never. But I definitely need a few years before I seriously consider doing it again.

What advice would you give the next team?

Be prepared to gather an admin team for PR and project management. There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that takes place beyond the physical training and that’s one of the most difficult parts of preparing for a challenge like this.

How much has your life changed since the row?

I can’t go anywhere in Antigua or Barbuda

How has the row changed you?

I’ve become more aware of how my actions influence team dynamics. That’s

something I will take with me whenever working in small groups or teams.

I’m also much more confident in pursuing larger goals I have for myself.

What’s key to maintaining harmony with teammates?

For me, it was speaking up about bigger things that bothered me and letting go of smaller things that only mildly irritated me.

What will your next challenge be?

As a team, our next priority is to make sure our charity Cottage of Hope is supported strategically with the funds we’re raising.

What was the most important lesson you learned along the way?

To ask for what I need not only to survive but to thrive. This was important for us to perform optimally under the given conditions and get home as quickly as possible. In the context of normal life, it still applies in going after my goals and aspirations.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

I hope to continue to inspire people of all ages to go after great things in their lives, be that through speaking engagements, books I’ve written and other adventures I will pursue.

Samara Emmanuel If you could relive any moment of the journey what would it be?

Our arrival. Seeing all the people that came out, the overwhelming support, the colours, the sounds of people cheering, the smiles and tears on everyone’s faces, the unity our journey brought to our island.

There aren’t enough words to describe it.

Which bit would you rather forget?

The night we nearly capsized. We’d been so careful for weeks and then to have a wave blindside us, days before our return, was a stark reminder that we were not in control - Mother Nature was.

Do you still have dreams that you’re on board?

No. If anything, sometimes I wish I was still out there. It was hard work but life was much simpler.

Was there ever a moment when you doubted you would finish?

Never. We are not quitters. And we had prepared as much as we could so we trusted each other and our vessel. Plus, we were the only team actually rowing home, so to get there we had to keep rowing and finish strong.

How does one maintain harmony in such close quarters?

Like any team, we all have different personalities, triggers and pet peeves. The key is communication, respect for each other and our boundaries. I also believe that keeping our goal at the forefront at all times helped. Because we were so focused, we always found innovative ways to quell whatever disagreements came up.

Would you do it again?

Yes, I would.

How much has life changed since the row?

We constantly have people stopping us on the streets, coming up to us saying how we’ve made them proud, we did an amazing job, we’re their children’s role models and a whole host of other compliments. It’s given us a platform. It has also helped shine a positive spotlight on our tiny country.

How do you hope to continue to serve as an inspiration to others?

Team Antigua Island Girls is a registered non-profit organisation so we do intend on venturing into other charity-based events. We will continue to raise funds for the less fortunate and be advocates for female empowerment.

How have your children reacted to your incredible feat?

They’ve grown so accustomed to me leaving on an adventure, mostly sailing, they’re not that phased. My 10-year-old has expressed interest in doing the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge in the future.

How has the row changed you as a person?

In ways I never imagined. It’s given me a deeper appreciation of the strength that comes from team work and communication. It’s taught me that my way isn’t the only way, and that the level of work put in determines the results you get.

It’s caused me to do a lot of introspection.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

I hope to have my own boat business,

Fashion conscience at Carlisle Bay

That’s why the luxury resort teamed up with designer Oliver Tomalin, of eco-friendly resortwear label Love Brand & Co. Tomalin’s exclusive swimwear prints for men and boys don’t just look good poolside, they help raise the profile of some of Antigua’s most precious wildlife too, as Tomalin tells Luxury Locations Magazine.

How did the collaboration with Carlisle Bay come about?

My family and I stayed at the property years ago, so when the opportunity came about to work with Carlisle Bay, I was instantly excited and knew how well it would work.

How do you like to spend your time in Antigua?

When I am at Carlisle Bay, I spend the whole time transfixed by the bay – I think it’s one of the most spectacular in the Caribbean – watching the yachts come and go and the pelicans dive for fish.

Although sometimes you feel you don’t want to leave the resort, I love it around English Harbour. I would recommend lunch at Catherine’s Cafe or a sundowner at Shirley Heights.

Which aspects of the resort inspired the pieces you created?

Those diving pelicans inspired my first exclusive design for Carlisle Bay. The wings of the flying birds join to create a wash of blues emulating the surf of the bay below. The second print is a geometric pattern of palm fronds that criss-cross and convey the little pineapple trees found around the property.

Do you have a favourite piece that you’ve designed?

The whole collection is inspired by nature. We highlight some of the world’s endangered species, including elephants, which are a personal favourite.

What materials and techniques did you use to suit Antigua’s climate?

All our fabrics are great for wearing in the tropics. They are soft and lightweight, and the fit is comfortable. Perfect for relaxing and enjoying life under the Antiguan sun.

Have you always been an animal lover?

Tell us about your passion for elephants.

I have always loved nature but not until starting Love Brand & Co. did I become passionate about wildlife conservation.

I think elephants are a lot of people’s favourite animal. For good reason. Their sheer size is incredible. They are our largest land mammal but also one of the most sensitive. They are very intelligent and emotional creatures.

You have another special creation inspired by a critically endangered species – this one found in Antigua.

One of our prints is Hawksbill turtles. It is a very subtle print. The turtle form is almost lost in the repeated pattern, which echoes the current concern that they could become lost to the world.

To what extent are ethics playing a part in contemporary fashion design and how do you anticipate this will evolve?

I think good ethics are key. People care.

People are more mindful of a product’s provenance. A good functioning product is not enough anymore – it needs to tell a story. n 34

Saucepans & steel pANS Antigua’s cuisine and culture in the spotlight during celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott’s Caribbean tour

A

ntigua’s culinary offerings tend to attract less international attention than its coastal ones. So what better way to bring scrumptious local favourites like pepperpot and fungee to the front burner than a visit by a celebrity chef?

Veteran British cook and comic Ainsley Harriott added a little spice to kitchens across the island when he touched down here earlier this year on a whistle-stop tour of the Caribbean.

From getting his first taste of conch at Gina’s Food Café in Old Road to sampling the aforementioned national dish at Beach Limerz on Fort James Beach, the focus was on authentic, feelgood fare with a side helping of culture.

The 62-year-old former host of British TV staple ‘Ready Steady Cook’ also indulged in a cocktail masterclass at the Carlisle Bay resort and enjoyed a steel pan lesson with local musical stalwart Veron Henry of Hell’s Gate orchestra.

The Antigua trip comprised the final two episodes of the 10-part series ‘Ainsley’s Caribbean Kitchen’, broadcast on ITV 1 from January to March, reaching more than one million UK households. Preceding episodes shone a spotlight on Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, St Lucia and Dominica.

The show not only served as an antidote to the winter blues for chilly Brits, it was a clarion call for more visitors to experience this diverse region...

Born in England to Jamaican parents, Ainsley said he has long felt a deep connection to the Caribbean – a place he describes as having “soul” – and savoured the opportunity to explore off-thebeaten-track eateries and meet fellow impassioned foodies.

One such gastronome was Nicole Arthurton Dennis who provides lessons in Caribbean cooking from her Orchid Hill Road house and gave Ainsley the inside scoop on her butter rum cake.

“Ainsley and the crew spent the morning with me at my home. I was a little nervous about being on camera but he was good fun and put me at ease,” she told Luxury Locations Magazine.

“I think Ainsley was quite impressed

by Antiguan food during his time here,” Nicole continued. “The secret to making a great rum cake is to only use the freshest ingredients and take the time to properly measure them out.”

And while she may have got over her initial camera fright, Nicole is still yet to watch the show, available online. “My family enjoyed it and tell me I was fine,” she laughs. “I will watch it eventually – with a bottle of wine.”

met up with Director of Heritage Resources Dr Reginald Murphy who related the colourful past of 18th century military lookout Shirley Heights, erstwhile royal haunt Clarence House, and Nelson’s Dockyard, once home to the famous British admiral.

Elsewhere in the Caribbean, Ainsley tucked into Rastafarian food in Jamaica, got sloppy over Trinidadian speciality ‘doubles’, visited a cacao plantation in

St Lucia, and witnessed the majesty of Dominica’s Emerald Pool waterfall.

The show not only served as an antidote to the winter blues for chilly Brits, it was a clarion call for more visitors to experience this diverse region which, in Ainsley’s words, offers a whole lot more than “sun, sea and jerk chicken”. n

Whale of a time Aquatic adventures aboard Double Header

A

s the sun rises in the early dawn over English Harbour, a lone vessel, a 55ft Hatteras named Double Header, glides out past the many yachts which have overnighted in the harbour.

Double Header is bound for the fertile fishing grounds of South Bank, a sea mount located between Antigua and Guadeloupe.

The nearest northern corner of South Bank is 13 miles from English Harbour and though the journey begins with gentle lapping of waters, as the sun rises the activity soon begins merely a few hundred metres from shore.

As the water depth drops by hundreds of

feet below us, Captain Derek declares that we are ready to begin fishing. Deckhand Tony, a seasoned fisherman equipped with seemingly impossible balance on the rolling vessel, calmly wanders the deck preparing the rods and lines. Within moments, six lines are out and we are poised for a great day of fishing.

Our fish targets for the day are pelagic fish species including wahoo, mahi mahi and tuna, as well as larger pelagic fish including marlin or swordfish. These species aggregate around the sea mount resulting in rich and more plentiful biodiversity in these locations.

Within 10 minutes, the tip of a rod flicks then springs forward bending to the sea, its reel clicking aggressively as line is stripped from the reel.

From the flybridge Captain Derek shouts down that it is probably a tuna due to the way the bait has been taken. My father, who until a moment earlier was calmly basking in the morning sun in the fighting chair, is now wrestling with the rod as the fight begins.

After 10 minutes of hauling and winding, Captain Derek’s hypothesis is proved correct as Tony lifts a black fin tuna over the transom. Exhausted and happy from the

catch, my father relinquishes the chair ready for the next fish.

The morning continues with more tuna and a few mahi mahi over the next hour, when a call from Derek announces that we have humpback whales off our starboard side.

The massive cetaceans, as if on cue, gradually move within 100ft of the vessel, occasionally blowing up clouds of vapour, giving us a clear view of the pod of six or so.

Over the next 30 minutes they meander on a similar course until we see tails flap as they dive into the abyss, leaving us to continue our fishing.

Within 10 minutes, the tip of a rod flicks then springs forward bending to the sea, its reel clicking aggressively as line is stripped from the reel.

As if by way of a parting gift, as we turn away one of the lines is struck. Although we have had a few fish of different species this seems different and a lot more powerful. As I am passed the rod it seems like a monster is attached to the end of the line. As I haul and wind it seems as if I am winning the battle in a similar way to the other fish landed, but this is something different – it is a wahoo.

Fifty feet from the boat the rod is virtually ripped from my hands as the rod is bent double. The line screams from the reel as the wahoo charges away; this, I am told, is why they are called wahoo! After several similar charges over the next 10 minutes, my first wahoo is landed.

Towards mid-afternoon we head back to Antigua. We have had multiple wahoo, mahi mahi, tuna and barracuda on board, seen whales and tails and are happily worn out as we crack open a few well deserved, ice cold beers.

Gastronomes can whet their appetite by keeping a close eye on Bryden’s website and Facebook pages; menus are released three weeks before the evening and places are sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

“Seats fill up very quickly; we even had a waiting list for the last one,” Stanley says.

Each mouth-watering dish has been perfectly paired with Bryden’s extensive wines and cocktails. Previous creations to make an appearance include exotic Bombay Sapphire East gin, complemented with lemon and rosemary, followed by grilled Portobello mushrooms stuffed with artichoke and fresh spinach. A main course might be filet mignon topped with lump crab meat and Béarnaise sauce, while the ‘silhouette cheesecake’ – half chocolate, half vanilla – had sweet-toothed diners swooning.

Best of all is Bryden’s pledge that those who meet at the table as strangers will leave as friends. Late celebrity chef Julia would most definitely approve of that. n

Bidding farewell to Fido: An ode to pets loved and losT

A

nyone who’s ever experienced the death of a beloved dog or cat knows the trauma and heartbreak is immeasurable. Musician Rachel Fuller – wife of The Who guitarist Pete Townshend and long-time visitor to Antigua – channelled her grief into a moving album to help fellow bereaved humans cope with the loss of a fourlegged friend.

‘Animal Requiem’, featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, was released earlier this year with proceeds going to animal welfare charities, including Antiguan rescue shelter PAAWS. Here, Fuller talks to Luxury Locations Magazine about her harmonious tribute to our faithful, furry family gone but not forgotten.

How did Animal Requiem come about?

I’d recently finished writing a theatre musical which is now being developed in New York. I wanted to write something new and I’d always wanted to compose a requiem.

A requiem is really a mass for people who’ve passed but I wanted to do something slightly different. My husband and I had lost six dogs in five years, thankfully due to old age, but I suffered a lot of grief.

When I was 17, I worked as an organist in a local crematorium for two years and I’ve played for over 2,000 funerals so I truly understand the importance of the service. Of course grief is present primarily but it’s also about saying a proper goodbye, remembering the life of the person and also celebrating and giving thanks.

We don’t have anything like this for our beloved pets when they pass. The idea came from these different things coming together; a musical work to remember, celebrate and honour all the animals we have loved and lost.

How would you describe your relationship with animals?

Nuts. I love them. They complete me.

There’s a ton of love in this body of mine and my poor husband could never take the full force so the overspill pours into my dogs.

Which pet had the most profound impact on you?

Every loss has the same impact, although losing my Yorkshire Terrier ‘Wistle’ last October was devastating because she followed me everywhere. She slept on my pillow for 13 years; the loss was deep. But honestly all of them break me for a while.

To what extent was writing the music cathartic for you?

It was incredibly cathartic. It has perhaps

the most meaning for me in this way. I found great comfort composing the music for my own personal grief.

Do you think there’s enough recognition of the grief experienced after losing a pet?

I think people who have lived with and loved animals know what it feels like.

You’re losing a member of your family.

Some of our animals are part of our daily life for up to 20 years.

I don’t think it’s appropriate to compare the loss of a pet to the loss of a person; they are different things. But grief is the same. It’s an emotion, like anger. A hundred things can make you angry but the anger you feel is the same. So it is with grief; whether you have lost a person or an animal, you grieve. It hurts.

Antiguans love their animals! Neglect and cruelty are prevalent in every country in the world and have to do with the human being, not the country. I also think people around the word are becoming more educated about animal welfare. I believe every animal is a sentient being – and each and every life is valuable.

How does the album differ from your previous work?

I haven’t composed anything this classical sounding for a long time. I wrote an album on which I played piano and sang, plus a theatre musical and I have done lots of orchestra arranging. But this is very pure; orchestra and choir. I believe people who like film and theatre music will enjoy it; it’s an easy listen.

Rachel worked with tenor Alfie Boe (seen with his dog ‘Red’) on the album To what extent do you believe in the healing power of music?

I’m a great believer in all of the arts having the capacity to bypass the intellect and reach straight to the heart. I think music is incredibly healing – it quiets the mind and soothes the body. It is beyond words – and in grief words are often useless, although well meant.

What is your biggest hope for Animal Requiem?

It’s two-fold I think. I want people who have lost a loved pet to be able to take a quiet half hour, light a candle and listen to the requiem and find it a safe space to remember, grieve, celebrate and honour them.

I hope it will bring comfort and ease suffering, but also uplift. We are blessed to have been able to love these animals for however long they have been entrusted to us.

Secondly, I’d like the album to raise plenty of money for different animal charities around the world.

Why did you choose PAAWS Antigua as a beneficiary?

I have a house in Antigua and for many

years have spent periods of time there.

Early on I became aware of PAAWS and wanted to be involved somehow, so I visited and saw the extraordinary work they were doing there and wanted to support them as much as I could.

I also know how much it costs to keep PAAWS afloat and raising funds is difficult especially when most of your time is physically taken up caring for the animals.

Tell us about your relationship with our beautiful island and its four-legged inhabitants.

I first visited Antigua in 2000 but did not return until 2011. I have come every year since then, fostered and rehomed several puppies and even flown one over to live with us in London.

I think great things are happening for the animals in Antigua. The Spay and Neuter Clinic is amazing. It’s expensive to spay animals when you don’t have a lot of disposable income but this programme makes it possible and it will have a great impact on the animal population on the island.

What do you feel is the biggest injustice facing the animals that share our planet today?

With humans as unquestionably the supreme species on this planet comes great responsibility. Human beings are capable of great compassion, love and kindness but they can also be capable of the most wicked cruelty, violence and abuse with each other, so of course we see it in every area of our lives and on the planet we inhabit.

We cannot promise our own children a life free from any suffering – perhaps spiritually most growth comes from our own suffering.

So do I foresee a world with no suffering? Probably not. However, I do feel a rise in consciousness and awareness and every single person has the power to change. I’m a great believer in the adage, ‘if you want to change the world, first change yourself ’. n As told to Gemma Handy

Giving Antiguan kids a sporting chance One woman’s passion for cricket sees hundreds of youngsters bowled over by gifts of new gear

A

love for cricket inspired Tamara Lowe’s first trip to Antigua. But it was a love for our twin island nation and its warm-hearted people which fuelled the magnanimous mission which followed.

The cricket-mad Aussie was bowled over by the passion she saw for the game, both on her inaugural visit here 20 years ago for an Australia versus West Indies Test match, and again in 2015 when she returned with her husband and two young sons.

“Everywhere we went, children of all ages joined impromptu games of cricket 82

with their new Aussie friends with a bat and ball we brought with us. From speaking to many children, I knew proper cricket gear was beyond reach for the majority,” she recalls.

Tamara wasted no time in penning a letter to Antiguan cricketing legend Sir Richie Richardson outlining her idea to provide under-resourced communities with equipment.

“My vision was to set up a humanitarian organisation to gift masses of cricket kit to Antigua and Barbuda, and indeed eventually to children throughout the Caribbean,” she says.

Sir Richardson was delighted to connect Tamara with local sports chiefs, along with former West Indies captain Ridley Jacobs, and the Children’s Cricket Charity was born.

“After an enormous amount of work collecting vast quantities of new and pre-loved cricket kit in my home town of Sydney, midway through 2017 the first charitable consignment was ready to be sent to St John’s,” Tamara explains.

Since then, 37 primary schools, 10 secondary schools and several college teams across the country have benefitted from a series of bulk donations of

everything from bats and balls, to pads, gloves, helmets and shirts.

Cricket has long been deeply entrenched in Caribbean culture and Tamara’s efforts have enabled more budding Viv Richards to hone their skills and experience the thrill of the game.

The mother-of-two’s hard work, which includes sending written appeals for assistance to hundreds of Sydney-based clubs, schools and manufacturers, has seen her initiative extended across the region and beyond.

“My inspiration was to level the playing field and make a positive social impact through cricket, a game I have loved all my life. I felt I could make a difference to the lives of children and teenagers by giving them the simple joy of access to proper kit to play the sport at the heart of the Antiguan culture and way of life,” Tamara says.

“The smiles on children’s faces, their excitement at seeing the cricket gear

we bring and the enormous hugs I am smothered in by younger kids completely melt my heart,” she adds.

“Cricket has always been an integral part of our history here in the Caribbean but for us the cost of the gear is outrageous,” said Clare Hall Secondary School principal Ashworth Azille.

He said the two donations the school had received were a “fantastic addition” to its practice sessions. “Without help of this nature, we would not be able to fulfil all our sporting goals. Clare Hall is so thankful and the children are very, very

appreciative of this kind gesture,” he added.

That sentiment was endorsed by Ridley Jacobs, national coordinator of school cricket.

“A lot of young players in Antigua are eager for cricket but we have a serious shortage of equipment,” he said. “The goodwill provided by the charity is so greatly appreciated and goes a long way to helping those unable to afford gear to play the game we love.” n

Setting sail for adventure The luxury circumnavigation voyage where the world’s your Oyster

F

rankly, there were a million reasons not to do it, David Pedley is saying.

Ageing parents and imminent new grandchildren were two obvious ones.

And being potentially a couple of days away from decent medical services in the

event of a catastrophe would be at least a fleeting thought for anyone past the age of indestructible youth.

A quick squiz at the accompanying Instagram account reveals a million more for throwing caution to the wind

– literally – and joining the Oyster World Rally. This extraordinary two-year circumnavigation of the globe is a jaunt that’s about both the journey and the destinations.

And that’s before one even gets to the sailing. Ah, the sailing. Thirty thousand exhilarating nautical miles aboard a blue water vessel abundant with the unparalleled safety features and general sexiness that comprise an Oyster. The kind of yacht one might lust over at a fancy boat show – as David himself did before he was lucky enough to be able to buy one.

“I’d been sailing all my life and my ambition was always to have my own boat. An Oyster was the ultimate aspiration,” David, who owns a packaging firm in Britain, tells Luxury Locations Magazine. “When we became part of the Oyster family and they started talking about the world rally I knew this was something I had to do.”

Persuading wife Linda was trickier.

“I love exploring but hated sailing,” she admits. “I’d never even done an overnight passage.”

The couple’s son Tom, a professional sailor, was the one who convinced her not to miss out on the experience of a lifetime. Even better, Tom agreed to come too to act as crew on the family’s Oyster 56 ‘Sea Flute’ which underwent a refit to equip it for the voyage ahead.

The inaugural world rally from 2013-14 was held in celebration of Oyster’s 40th anniversary. It proved such a success the stage was set for a second, longer, event which departed Antigua in January 2017 and arrived back in Nelson’s Dockyard in spring 2019. Organised

exclusively for Oyster yacht owners, the aim was to bring together like-minded sailors for leisurely-paced adventures.

After exploring the Caribbean, the fleet transited the Panama Canal, before taking in a host of tiny islands across the Galapagos, French Polynesia and the Pacific, heading into New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia, across the Indian Ocean to Mauritius and Reunion, followed by South Africa. The Britishowned isles of St Helena and Ascension came next, then the Brazilian national marine park of Fernando de Noronha, before island-hopping through the Caribbean back to Antigua.

“The 56 is an amazing boat, with an incredible sense of security,” David says.

“Even in the worst conditions I knew she would take us through safely.”

“Camaraderie” among the crews at each of the meeting points helped put Linda at ease, while her fears of midAtlantic seasickness turned out to be unfounded.

“We were on such a high when we first spotted the other crews after crossing the Atlantic,” Linda, a retired nurse, recalls. And, far from her initial trepidation, she now says she would happily do the entire trip again. “We made some fantastic friends that I know we’ll have for life,” she adds.

For David, the highlights were traversing the Panama Canal, snorkelling with manta rays and experiencing diverse cultures.

“The trip completely changed our sense of values,” he continues. “We went around the world with just the possessions we could fit on board. And have we missed the other things? Not at all.

“It’s a great lesson on what’s really important in life. You can leave all the periphery stuff behind.

“It’s brought Linda and I closer together too. In the UK I was working five days a week until late, we were both busy at weekends and didn’t spend that much time together. Then suddenly we were in very close proximity for more than two years but we came through it and love each other more than ever.

“To anyone thinking of taking part next time, you can always find a reason not to – parents getting older, grandkids on the way. But if you have the time and can afford it, don’t hesitate.”

Of the 29 yachts that set off, 18 completed the entire route. Also among them were fellow Brits Rob and Jeanette Parkinson, with their Oyster 575 ‘Tianelle’.

For retired trainline.com director Rob who grew up sailing dinghies, cruising the world’s oceans was a lifelong dream. Like Linda, Jeanette, a former social services professional, took longer to convince.

“My first experience of sailing was when Rob took me on a dinghy on our honeymoon. I hated it,” she says. “It was 20 years before I went again. I finally learned to sail about 15 years ago but I still couldn’t contemplate sleeping on a boat; the cabins felt claustrophobic and I didn’t like the tipping motion.”

With the odds firmly stacked against him, Rob began a slow-but-determined campaign to sway her, beginning with 86

intermittent mini-cruises and culminating in an Oyster World Rally seminar.

“They told us at the seminar, you have one life, live it,” Jeanette recalls. “That resonated with me and helped me make up my mind.”

“The longest sailing trip we’d done before was a weekend away,” Rob says.

“We learned lots of new skills to prepare, including scuba diving.”

The couple’s diving training in an ice-cold lake in Southampton was a far cry from the jaw-dropping beauty of the Tuamotos Islands in French Polynesia where they swam among the archipelago’s iconic ‘wall of sharks’.

“The trip completely changed our sense of values,” he continues. “We went around the world with just the possessions we could fit on board.

Tuamotos’ other stand-out moment was slightly more practical.

“The price of lettuce in the supermarket was £11 (US$14),” Jeanette exclaims. “We couldn’t believe it. Those are the things you miss in remote places; fresh tomatoes, Heinz baked beans.”

But something far bigger to be missed was to come; the birth of their first grandchildren. Shortly after leaving, the couple received the news that, incredibly, both their daughter and their son’s wife were pregnant.

Thankfully, the rally’s laidback pace allows for occasional trips back home so the pair were able to meet the new arrivals fairly soon.

participating crews. “Any more than two boats in a bay is a party,” Rob grins.

“For our 40th wedding anniversary, which fell when we were in Indonesia, five boats went ashore to celebrate,” Jeanette continues. “We got there to find they’d strung out 40 red paper hearts for us.”

With more than two years at sea, the odd mishap is only to be expected which is why Oyster had a full support team close to hand.

“We had a breakage on the boom which caused us some heartache,” Rob says. “We were in the Pacific about 1,000 miles from the Galapagos which was one of the worst places for it to happen.”

Thankfully, the couple had two paid crew on board who helped bring the sail in and lash it up.

“It meant we couldn’t use the mainsail anymore so we used the two headsails for that leg which are quite efficient on these boats,” Rob explains.

Preparations are now underway for the next world rally starting in 2022 but, with a lifetime of memories already made, the Parkinsons’ next expedition will be a little closer to land.

“We’ve sailed all the oceans and we know we don’t need to cross one again,” Rob says. This summer they’re looking forward to a jaunt to BVI, Bermuda and the US east coast.

As for Jeanette, she is living proof that advancing years are no barrier to fulfilling one’s dreams – or surprising yourself. “I used to be such a scaredy-cat, I wouldn’t do anything out of my comfort zone,” she remarks wryly. “There was something about turning 60 that made me discover my adventurous side.” n

Art gallery that creates a scene Gilly Gobinet’s enchanting space stirs the senses and captivates the soul

et among tropical gardens overlooking a seductive seascape, Gilly Gobinet’s working art gallery offers scenes as pretty as a picture. And that’s before one even begins to browse the delightful paintings on display.

Inside, one wall is devoted to a series of abstract watercolour nudes, another to an effervescent collection of bougainvillea and lilies tenderly recreated in acrylic.

Interspersed throughout, haughty flamenco dancers kick up their heels before an exquisitely depicted audience of doe-eyed canines.

In the kitchen, cartoon rastas vie for position among pictures of pineapples, chattel houses and classic yachts. And in the bathroom, a papier mache clown offers visitors lavatory paper with one tiny scarlet hand.

In the background, the effortless timbre of Mozart adds one final whimsical flourish.

Barely a square foot of Gilly’s home-cum-gallery found in a charming Fitches Creek street – a short drive from the international airport – has been excluded from this bacchanalia of colour and canvas. Hand-painted murals adorn exterior walls and even the periphery of the swimming pool.

“Inspiration is never lacking when you’re surrounded by all of this,” she says brightly, gesturing towards the ocean which abuts a stretch of unrestrained flora where bananaquits shrill contentedly as they forage.

Anyone wishing to browse Gilly’s sundry creations will be treated to a full tour of the property, beginning with the gaily embellished hallway before heading into the bathroom which houses 42 pieces alone. Hundreds more original works and prints – all of which are for sale – bedeck the interior rooms, verandah and courtyard. The latter is where Gilly can usually be found at work, brush in hand.

“Most artists are recognisable by one specific style but I am extremely versatile,” she says. “I can do anything from cartoons, to delicate pen and ink, to very detailed or loose watercolour and acrylic – practically anything anyone asks me to.”

While most of the pieces exhibited are the result of her own impulse, much of Gilly’s work is commissioned, particularly her portraits of pet dogs and cats for which she donates 10 per cent to local

animal charity PAAWS. Nearly all her paintings are suitcase-friendly, or can be shipped already stretched or rolled into a tube for convenience. Greetings cards and postcards are also available.

Creature comforts No kidding: Visitors to eco-friendly farm Goatland can bottle-feed baby goats and witness a fresh new approach to farming

S

imon spots us first. A hulking mass of muscle, milky fur and sharpened senses, he makes an exceptional security system. But this majestic Akbash dog with the imposing height is no ordinary pet; Simon and his sister Simple have the critical job of guarding the 3.5acre farm we’ve come to visit and its 150 cloven-footed residents.

Theft of livestock in Antigua is big business. And the traditional practice of allowing goats and sheep to roam free makes them easy prey. While Simon diligently scouts the perimeter fence, Simple watches her flock, a silent but steadfast sentry.

‘Goatland’ opened last year on a former plantation site in picturesque Swetes to showcase a fresh, innovative approach to raising and caring for farm animals.

and more than half of the creatures which live here have been painstakingly handreared. The goats’ vast hillside ‘home’ with solar-powered lighting is not, as it first appears, constructed of timber but recycled shipping pallets, slathered with waste engine oil to preserve the wood.

‘Goatland’ opened last year on a former plantation... to showcase a fresh, innovative approach to raising and caring for farm animals.

And while the daily collection of poop might not sound an enticing task it makes for a cheap, efficient and readily available source of energy. Each night, the faeces are loaded into a biodigester that produces methane to power a cooking stove for staff.

Even better, the slurry created is an

excellent organic fertiliser, says Goatland’s co-founder Lennox Francis, gesturing to an adjacent field abundant with mango and soursop trees, baby coconut palms and avocadoes.

Visits by local school groups are encouraged. “We’re trying to get more children interested in agriculture,” Lennox explains. “We’re meat eaters in the Caribbean – everyone loves their curry goat and baked lamb – but someone has to look after those animals, and that means hard work.

“Farmers use so much energy searching for their animals when they let them roam,” he continues. “And when they get stolen, you can go to the police and tell them you lost 10 goats but they don’t see how hard you worked bringing them to market value. Plus, roaming creatures are always impacting someone

else’s garden, crops or livelihood.”

Goatland was a dream for many years for Lennox and his veterinarian wife Fiona. The couple hope to develop their own unique breed of goat, hardy enough to withstand the dry climate and help reduce Antigua’s reliance on costly meat imports which, in 2017, topped US$20 million.

“Low maintenance” New Zealand ‘Kiko’ goats – like the sturdy-looking horned couple nicknamed ‘John’ and ‘Tina’ – are being bred with local varieties, including those flown in from the country’s uninhabited third isle, Redonda.

with names. There’s also ‘Cupid’, who was born on Valentine’s Day, and ‘Ray Charles’, the blind goat.

A handful of other inhabitants won’t be going anywhere near the abattoir.

‘Bambi’, the sole fallow deer, was brought to Fiona’s surgery from Barbuda with a broken leg after Hurricane Irma, and appears blithely oblivious to her roommates’ differing species.

‘Bob’ the Friesian cow – attacked by dogs at two weeks’ old and nursed back to health – will also live out his years at Goatland. Lucky old Bob can expect a girlfriend soon too, Lennox says.

For Fiona, who moved to Antigua

from the UK in the 1990s, ‘Goatland’ is the result of extensive research to identify the best goat genes for the climes and studies in artificial insemination, along with an eco-conscience and a deep-seated respect for animals.

For visitors to the country, the scenic pastoral spot is one of the island’s last undiscovered touristic gems. ‘Be fearless’ - Marlon James urges Caribbean writers Booker Prize-winning Jamaican author on sexuality, taboos and flying the region’s literary flag

H

ad Marlon James been aiming for mass appeal – including garnering a steadfast following in the Caribbean – then writing about “taboo” subjects like sexuality in explicit detail might have been a madcap move.

As it is, the uncompromising nature of the Jamaican author’s acclaimed work has struck a chord not just with international audiences but with those on home turf too.

And no one, he says, was more surprised than him.

“Jamaicans have been incredibly receptive,” he told an audience in Antigua recently. “People in the Caribbean respect fearlessness; even if they don’t approve, they respect the audacity.”

Fans turned out to the Sugar Ridge resort on April 26 to meet James, fresh from the release of his fourth book, ‘Black Leopard, Red Wolf ’.

‘An Evening with Marlon James’ was produced by Antigua-based HaMa Films, in collaboration with the resort and Best of Books store, and included a reading from James’ epic new fantasy novel, plus questions and answers from the audience.

A book is a “safe space” for exploring fresh, hidden or controversial themes, Marlon, who now lives in the US, told the crowd.

“It’s important to give the Caribbean credit,” the openly gay author continued.

“I find more open-minded people in the Caribbean now than five years ago.”

James urged aspiring writers to “let go of what people will think”.

“It shows in your work if you’re hiding something,” he said. “Every writer is aware of the first time they write their taboo. For some, it might be writing about their parents; for me it was writing about love.”

When describing uncomfortable topics, such as slavery in his 2009 novel ‘Book of Night Women’, one must be “unflinching but sensitive”.

“I’m not going to blink or turn away,” James said. “It was hard to write – but I’m guessing it was harder to have been a slave.”

James’ third novel ‘A Brief History of Seven Killings’, which explores the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in 1976 and its aftermath, earned him the 2015 Man Booker Prize. James was the first Jamaican to claim the prestigious award and only the second in the Caribbean after VS Naipaul in 1971.

One of the reasons for the region’s paucity of Booker awardees might be because, traditionally, writing was not encouraged as a career, James suggested.

“People wanted to know what my real job was going to be,” he laughed. “The

one person who says, ‘that’s a really good paragraph, write another’, means the world.”

James was asked about his ideal working conditions by fellow writer, and the evening’s host, Brenda Lee Browne.

“Many people say they have to have quiet. But I grew up in a Caribbean household so you get used to noise. No one’s going to turn the TV down because you’re studying for an exam,” he joked.

“Now I have an office but I open the window so I can hear the traffic and sometimes the stuff happening outside will end up in the book.

“I can’t write about the world if I’m not in it,” he said.

Setting a schedule is also key. “You have to get past the stage where writing is a hobby. If you set your routine, your muse will show up.”

The 48-year-old Kingston-born author and University of the West Indies graduate now teaches literature and creative writing in Minnesota and New York.

The 600-page ‘Black Leopard, Red Wolf ’ interweaves strong themes of African history and mythology and is the first of a planned trilogy that James began writing during a sabbatical from teaching. Its colourful characters include roof-walking night demons, hunters, witches and goddesses. Actor Michael B. Jordan recently bought the rights for a film adaptation, of which James will be executive producer.

James said he researched for two years before writing a single word. “There was a lot of recovering history; some of it was just reading African stories,” he said. “The hardest part of writing for me is figuring out what the story is, and whose.

“I will have an idea of how to write it and then my research will either completely shut it down or take it in a direction I wasn’t expecting at all.

“I have no idea how a novel will end up when I start it,” James revealed.

“And sometimes my characters let me down; they’re not always good people but you have to let them be people.”

James also urged would-be novelists

not to be deterred by rejection letters.

After receiving 78 himself for his first book, John Crow’s Devil, which was finally published in 2005, he is well placed to comment.

“Push yourself out there – submit, submit, submit,” he added.

James’ unique style has been appreciated by Caribbean readers with several during the evening testifying to his “raw, edgy” appeal and realistically portrayed characters.

“Having Marlon James come to Antigua is an important part of stimulating interest in the literary arts.

The evening was a resounding success with Marlon even getting a rare standing ovation. We hope to have him back soon for a writers’ retreat,” said HaMa Films’ Mitzi Allen.

She added: “We’re very proud of him, the strides he’s made as an author and the way he’s brought people back to reading stories rooted in Caribbean folklore and mythology.” n

Ten years, one love Where we went: As one of the most hotly anticipated events in Antigua’s social calendar – and with a slew of impressive headline acts in previous years – the bar was high for the 10th annual Reggae in the Park.

Luckily, the well-connected organisers of Antigua Sailing Week, of which the show is a central feature, pulled it out of the bag once again. Two of Jamaica’s top artists were nailed in the shape of Mr ‘Big Deal’ himself, Christopher Martin, and ‘Love So Nice’ crooner Junior Kelly.

What we loved: The thousands of fans who poured into Nelson’s Dockyard for the event also showed due appreciation for homegrown bands Blakk Gold and LCD. And while both headliners performed several of their own biggest hits, a highlight was Christopher Martin’s encore which saw him pay musical tribute to late soul greats Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye.

What we wanted to know: Since shooting to fame as winner of Jamaica’s ‘American Idol’ counterpart, Christopher Martin has vocalised his thoughts on love and relationships in various hits including debut single ‘Love Is All We Need’ and smash hit ‘Cheater’s Prayer’. So it seemed only appropriate to quiz him on what his ideal date might be.

The 32-year-old said choosing an activity that appealed to both parties was vital – and ensuring it was “with someone who truly understands you”. Any takers, ladies?

We also asked him about his philanthropy, in keeping with this issue’s ‘giving back’ theme. Big-hearted Mr Martin likes to treat schoolchildren in his home parish of St Catherine by staging an annual day of entertainment with proceeds going towards much-needed school supplies. Just when you thought he couldn’t get any more loveable.

Party vibes at Papa’s Where we went: Ooh la la, what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with a day fete at Papa’s by the Sea? This high-energy beach bash, ably hosted by some energetic MCs, was dubbed La Fete Sur La Baie. (That’s ‘party on the bay’ to Anglophones.)

What we ate: Hearty fare was the order of the day.

Burgers, nachos, jumbo shrimp and soups kept our energy levels fully stocked up for non-stop boogying.

What we drank: Signature cocktail ‘La Baie’ packed a punch in fruity, zesty moreishness. The bottomless booze also included bubblies and a host of premium liquors.

Who we saw: An assembly of the island’s foot-stomping DJs was complemented by an upbeat performance from soca star Drastic.

What we bedazzled in: Antigua loves a dress theme – and we hate to disappoint, so the elegant beachwear code was nautical all the way, with a focus on white, tan or turquoise in tribute to the seaside surroundings.

Getting savvy about Sauvignon Where we went: It’s one thing to enjoy a casual glass of vino; it’s quite another to try and mix it yourself.

The art of wine blending had participants in fine spirits during a seminar staged at South Point by distributors A.S. Brydens’ Cuvee wine department.

What it was about: Wine lovers seized the opportunity to try their hand at blending their own Sauvignon. This fun, educational and interactive afternoon gave guests a rare opportunity to taste different wine varietals under the Kim Crawford brand, noting specific aromas and palate impressions, before creating their own concoction.

What we loved: The aim was to help industry experts and wine enthusiasts alike develop their palate and scent expertise. Giggles were aplenty – and competition stiff – as participants battled to match the concentration and balance of the original Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc.

The Property Handbook The road to ownership Six small steps to buying property in Antigua...

Step 1: Choosing an agent Identifying the right realtor to guide you through the buying process is crucial.

With a combined four decades’ experience in the local property market, the friendly, efficient and professional Luxury Locations team can help make finding your ideal abode a fruitful and enjoyable experience.

Step 2: Viewing properties The next stage is for us to determine your specific requirements: is your dream home beachfront or hillside? Does it have a pool or garden? How many bedrooms should it have? And what is your investment range?

We will then suggest various properties for you to look at online and arrange a time to take you to see them.

Step 3: Finding the one you love With an extensive portfolio from snug holiday hideaways to plush palatial estates, we’re confident it won’t be long before you’re head over heels in real estate love. You can then submit an offer and we will negotiate on your behalf, ensuring you the best possible deal for your money.

Once the offer is accepted, a deposit will be needed to reserve the property; usually either US$10,000 or one per cent of the property price.

Step 4: The legal process Now come the all-important legalities for which we can put you in touch with a reputable lawyer. Their fee is between one and two per cent of the purchase price, half of which will be required upfront.

The seller’s lawyer will then draw up a draft contract. Once both parties are happy with the fine print, a 10 per cent deposit of the property price is due (minus the reservation deposit already paid). That will be held safely in an escrow account.

Step 5: Non-citizen’s licence Non-nationals buying a home need a non-citizen’s licence which our recommended lawyers can handle for you. It costs five per cent of the purchase price and can take up to three months to acquire but it’s a pretty seamless process and 99 per cent of applicants are approved.

Step 6: Completion The remaining 90 per cent of the property price is owed upon completion of the deal.

Finally, there’s the transfer of the title deeds making you the official owner. Now all that’s left for you to do is settle in and enjoy your new home. Or, for maximum return on your investment, enter it into the rental programme and allow our sister company Villa Management to take care of it for you.

Have you considered citizenship by investment?

For the savvy investor, a second passport can spawn a wealth of advantages including visa-free travel and international tax planning. In 2013, Antigua & Barbuda became the latest nation to offer a route for citizenship by investment. But while other jurisdictions offer something ostensibly comparable, few make it as speedy, seamless or affordable as our twin island paradise.

One avenue for gaining an Antigua & Barbuda passport is a minimum US$400,000 purchase in a governmentapproved real estate project. Successful applicants are not required to sacrifice their current citizenship. They also benefit from exemption from a number of local taxes, including personal income, net worth, gift tax and estate duty. In addition, they enjoy visa-free travel to around 130 countries worldwide, including the UK, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Europe’s borderless Schengen area.

Giving back is the name of the game He’s the billionaire gaming tycoon behind Bodog whose cryptocurrency expertise saw him named an economic envoy to Antigua & Barbuda.

These days, Canadian-born tech mogul Calvin Ayre calls our twin islands home.

Locally, he’s known as much for his business ventures as his philanthropy, which has seen his eponymous foundation sponsor everything from critical medical equipment to school bursaries.

Here, Calvin Ayre talks giving back – along with blockchain technology, his forthcoming biography and bad drivers – exclusively to Luxury Locations Magazine.

What first attracted you to Antigua?

I came to Antigua originally because it was an early gaming-friendly jurisdiction and I bought a company here in 2006. I got residency in 2007 and, more recently, citizenship. My investments and personal connections to Antigua have grown over the years. I am happy to call Antigua my home now!

As a successful businessman, why is it important to you to give back?

My philosophy has always been to give back to those less fortunate. I think everyone who has success in life should follow this path. I am happy to continue doing this in Antigua.

Of all the local causes you’ve donated to, which is closest to your heart?

I try to sponsor things that can improve things in some real way. An example of this is education, which is the gift that keeps giving your entire life. I am also happy to have donated the island’s sole hyperbaric chamber [for decompression sickness associated with scuba diving].

This is something that saves lives and is good for tourism.

What is your proudest achievement?

I have been blessed with business success beyond what I expected when I was young. I hope that I can continue to do the work I love into the future but expect more and more of my time to be based on giving back as I get older. I expect this to be what I am most proud of at the end of the day.

As an economic envoy to Antigua & Barbuda, how do you envisage blockchain technology and digital currencies can benefit the nation?

Yes, we are working with the government here in Antigua to get the correct legislation in place to allow the crypto industry to take root. I already have large pieces of my global crypto business touching Antigua where appropriate, so I expect the new legislation to make Antigua even more interesting to others.

I want to see us roll out point of sale technology in resorts, for instance.

How do you like to spend your time when in Antigua?

I am a huge fan of water sports, especially wakesurfing and wakeboarding. I would also like to take up kiteboarding. Antigua is a great place for healthy living in general, so I take advantage of being here to go hiking and other forms of exercise. I love that there is very little pollution and the weather is great for outdoor activities.

What music do you like to listen to?

European-style deep house and regional Spanish music are mostly what I listen to, but I still love some of the old greats of my youth from North America.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Nelson Mandela would have been an amazing person to meet.

Which actor would play you in a movie about your life?

Maybe I can play myself. I am currently working on my biography so maybe this will be a reality one day.

Biggest pet peeve?

In Antigua, my biggest peeve is the roads.

Both the quality of the roads themselves and the bad driving habits of many of the drivers. I hope this is something we can work on improving.

Fondest childhood memory?

Playing hockey in high school in Canada was pretty special.

Tell us one thing people don’t know about you.

How much I love building things, especially houses, but also businesses and now resort projects. One of the things that surprises people the most is how hard I work; I still work seven days a week.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Always work for yourself! n
