ANCHORING YOUR FUTURE IN ANTIGUA
If you’re not already thinking about making Antigua a permanent base, then Elmsbridge is here to tell you why you should be.
WELCOME TO ANTIGUA & BARBUDA!
As Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment, it is always my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to our beautiful twin-island nation. Whether you are visiting us for the first time or returning to your home away from home, Antigua and Barbuda stands ready to inspire and embrace you with the warmth of our people and the richness of our culture.
Tourism is the heartbeat of our economy. It powers jobs, fuels entrepreneurship, and shapes the global image of our nation. Yet at the very centre of this industry is not the hotel, the airline, or the cruise ship, it is the people. The woman greeting guests with a smile, the young man curating unforgettable tours, the chef infusing flavour with heritage, the manager ensuring excellence and care. Our people have always been, and will always be, our greatest asset.
Today, we live in an age of artificial intelligence and immersive technology, an era of innovation that is
reshaping how the world travels. From smart hotel systems to personalized concierge tools, to sustainable energy management to data-driven marketing, technology is transforming tourism. But let me be clear: technology cannot replace our humanity. It can enhance efficiency, but it cannot replicate empathy. It can process information, but it cannot deliver the warmth of an authentic local Antiguan and Barbudan welcome.
That is why we see innovation not as a substitute for people, but as a tool to empower them. We are investing in training and capacity building to ensure our workforce leads in this new era. A shining example is our “Antigua and Barbuda Unveiled: A VR 360° Paradise” project, developed with Winged Whale Media, which recently won a prestigious 2025 Telly Award. This first-ofits-kind experience in the Caribbean allows audiences worldwide to explore our beaches, heritage sites, and culture through cutting-edge virtual reality, cementing our reputation as both a premier destination and a hub for creativity and technology.
As we embrace this new frontier, our principle is clear: AI plus people, not AI instead of people. With every innovation, our people remain at the heart of our tourism product, ensuring that technology amplifies the warmth, authenticity, and charm that defines Antigua and Barbuda.
Welcome, and may your stay with us be truly unforgettable.
HON. H. CHARLES FERNANDEZ Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment

Where in the world?
Located in the heart of the Eastern Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda are twin gems of the Leeward Islands. Just north of Guadeloupe and east of St. Kitts, these two islands are blessed with year-round sunshine, gentle trade winds, and a prime spot where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea. Antigua is the larger, livelier sister, while Barbuda is wilder, more untouched, together creating the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
Antigua spans approximately 108 square miles (280 square km). Its terrain is varied, with our highest point, Mount Obama, reaching 1,319 feet (402 meters). This elevation provides Antigua with a diverse ecosystem, from lowland areas to more mountainous regions.
Barbuda is located about 30 miles north of Antigua. It is a low-lying coral island, covering about 62 square miles (160 square km). The highest point on Barbuda is only about 125 feet (38 meters), meaning it is not visible from Antigua’s shores, despite their proximity.
THE GATEWAY TO THE CARIBBEAN
n To the Southwest, approximately 27 miles (43 km) away, lies Montserrat. Known for its active Soufrière Hills volcano.
n Northwest of us, roughly 60 miles (97 km) away, you’ll find St. Kitts and Nevis. These islands are visible from Antigua’s West coast on clear days.
n To the South, about 47 miles (76 km) away, is Guadeloupe, adding a touch of French culture to our diverse neighbourhood.
You can also access destinations like St. Maarten, Dominica, or the British Virgin Islands, each offering their very own unique Caribbean experience.
Antigua & Barbuda’s unique geography offers a blend of accessible beauty, diverse landscapes, and a strategic position for Caribbean exploration. So whether you were drawn here by our 365 beaches, intrigued by our rich history, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Antigua & Barbuda provides the perfect backdrop for your Caribbean adventures.
LOCATION,
EASY TO FIND, IMPOSSIBLE TO FORGET
Getting here is an absolute breeze! With direct flights to Antigua’s V.C. Bird International Airport from London, New York, Miami, Toronto, and beyond. For regional explorers, short hops from nearby islands make it just as simple and for cruisers, St. John’s is a favourite port of call for some of the world’s most spectacular cruise lines. If you love to sail, there are ports in Jolly Harbour, English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour and Heritage Quay in the capital of St John’s.
So whether you’re flying in for a long escape or sailing in for a sun-soaked adventure, Antigua and Barbuda is closer than you think and waiting to welcome you with open arms, rum punch, and that famous Caribbean warmth.
So pack your swimsuit and your sense of adventure, paradise is just a flight (or cruise) away!

USEFUL THINGS WE WISHED WE’D KNOWN
Money Matters: While both East Caribbean Dollars (EC$) and US Dollars (US$) are widely accepted, even if you pay in US$, you will receive change in EC$. Many tourist-oriented businesses quote prices in US$, so always clarify which currency you’re being charged in, to avoid any confusion. Some small businesses, shops, and petrol stations may not accept credit cards, so carrying cash is always a good idea. You cannot use Apple Pay or Google Pay. It is also not uncommon for retailers to require ID to go with your card payment even if you use a chip and pin so do not be offended if they ask.
Driving Tips: If you plan to drive while in Antigua & Barbuda, you’ll need to bring your home country’s driving license and purchase a temporary local license from either the police station close to the airport or your car rental company which is around US$10. Driving is on the left side of the road, and while most roads are in fair condition, you should watch out for potholes, wandering livestock and slow-moving vehicles. It’s also worth noting that petrol stations can sometimes close unexpectedly, so keep an eye on your fuel gage. Be prepared for some local driving quirks, such as cars stopping unexpectedly in the middle of the road in front of you just for the driver to stop and chat to a friend on the side of the road, if this happens, be patient and just pass when you can.
Local Transportation: We would recommend if you are hiring a car, to select something substantial, like a 4x4 to tackle the island’s roads, as conditions can vary and you may encounter the occasional pothole. If you’re staying in Jolly Harbour, a golf cart is also a great idea for getting around the gated community with easeperfect for quick trips to the beach, supermarket, or restaurants. Taxis are also readily available, and drivers often act as informal tour guides, offering insights into the best places to visit, they will also deliver you to your destination and then return to pick you up if you just let them know the timings.
Sun Protection and Climate: Temperatures remain warm all year-round, but the sun can be particularly intense during the summer months. Protect yourself with a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen. Also consider wearing a rash vest with long sleeves if you plan to spend extended time at the beach or out on the water.
Shopping and Essentials: The Epicurean supermarkets in Jolly Harbour and St. John’s offer a wide range of products, but be prepared to bring your own bags, or you will have to purchase one in store.
For fruit and vegetables we recommend purchasing from the various roadside stalls you can see across the island, just make sure you have cash.
The pharmacy in Jolly Harbour, is an absolute treasure trove, it stocks pretty much everything you might expect to find in a pharmacy and a lot of stuff you don’t. So if you need something and you’re not sure where to get it, try the pharmacy first!
Alcohol sales are prohibited on Easter Sunday, so plan accordingly.
Beach Etiquette and Rentals: Amenities like sun beds and beach umbrellas generally come with a rental fee. Typically, sun beds cost around US$20 per day, and umbrellas US$10 per day, a small price to pay for a day of relaxation on one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines. But be prepared and make sure you bring cash.
ARRIVE
ANTIGUA
The new Arrive Antigua online customs and immigration system speeds up your arrival, and makes the whole process paper-free. It is backed by the government, so you know it’s official, and it’s honestly one of the smoothest systems in the Caribbean.
THE PROCESS IS SIMPLE:
n Head to ArriveAntigua.com on your phone or tablet.
n First select ‘Visitor,’ and start a new immigration and customs form, add yourself first. Then you can add your family members on the same form.
n Next, scan or photograph your passport bio page.
n Then comes a quick selfie step for ID verification.
n You’ll be asked the usual customs questions – about food, cash or items to be declared before being brought into the country.
n You’ll need your home address, email, outgoing and return flight details and the address where you’ll be staying in Antigua.
n Once you review and sign electronically, hit submit. Straight away, you’ll get a personalized QR code. Save it as a screenshot or add it to your Apple or Google Wallet.
Electrical Outlets: The electrical voltage in Antigua & Barbuda is usually 220V, so check the voltage requirements for your electronic devices and bring a transformer (not just an adapter) for any sensitive electronics.
Natural Pests: Mosquitoes are common, so it’s wise to protect yourself, particularly at dawn and dusk, by wearing long sleeves and using insect repellant. Red fire ants are also common and they are aggressive when disturbed, so do check where you’re sitting or standing.
Sand flies are almost invisible to the eye, but are generally only around and biting during sunrise and sunset, so again make sure you use insect repellant if you fancy watching the sunset. If you’re allergic to insect bites, packing antihistamines is a good precaution.
Island Time: Finally, embrace the relaxed pace of island life. Things might move a little slower than you’re used to, but that’s part of the charm. Whether it’s waiting a few extra minutes for a meal or taking your time to explore a secluded beach, let the island’s rhythm guide you, and you’ll find yourself unwinding in no time. Liming s the Caribbean art of doing absolutely nothing, but doing it perfectly. So grab a rum punch and try it out!
n When you land at V.C. Bird International, follow the signs to arrivals. Have your passport and QR code ready. Scan it, show your passport, and head to baggage claim. At customs, just show your QR code again, no more fiddling with paper forms on or off the plane.
n When you leave Antigua, you will use that same QR code.
NEED TO KNOW...
The electronic form cannot be completed more than 72hours prior to your arrival. It is also only available on your personal mobile device or tablet.
FOUR TOP SPOTS
u ST JOHN’S
The capital of Antigua & Barbuda, this is where you’ll find a whole host of historical and cultural landmarks, including The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda which is well worth a visit. As well as the main exhibitions it is home to an extensive research library open to the public, where you will find a vast collection of archaeological artefacts, monographs (some unpublished), maps, and hundreds of photographs. If you are keen to take a little knowledge home with you, there are Antiguan history and archaeology books and framed maps to be found in the gift shop too.
There is also St John’s Cathedral which has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, making it one of the oldest religious structures in the Caribbean. Its distinctive baroque architecture, with its twin towers topped with cupolas make it an architectural gem and despite initial criticism to the contrary, it is now celebrated as one of the most impressive cathedrals in the West Indies. If you climb to the top of the two towers you will get the chance to enjoy panoramic views of the island and breathtaking vistas of Antigua’s landscape and coastline.
St John’s is also the place to go if you’re looking to shop. Heritage Quay is the place to go for duty-free shopping with a wide range of luxury items to be found in the boutiques there while Redcliffe Quay with its colourful and restored buildings is renowned for housing an array of smaller shops, which offer a mix of local art, crafts, jewellery and tourist souvenirs, perfect if you’re looking for something special to take home with you.
q JOLLY HARBOUR
Jolly Harbour, set along Antigua’s stunning west coast, is the island’s largest gated community. It features a mix of residential properties and holiday accommodation, a full-service marina, and easy access to a wide range of water sports and boating activities. Best of all, it opens directly onto Jolly Beach, one of the island’s longest and most beautiful stretches of white sand. The community already offers an impressive selection of amenities, including restaurants and bars, a supermarket, pharmacy, golf course, communal pool, and a gym located just
outside the gates at Sugar Ridge. And with exciting new developments underway, the range of facilities is only set to grow in the coming months. Visitors can already start enjoying the brand new state-of-the-art gym, tennis courts, and pickleball courts. New restaurants are opening, and a lively container village, with multiple dining options and shared entertainment spaces, is also in progress. Be sure to follow our socials and our download our app to keep updated.
u FALMOUTH HARBOUR
Located on the South Coast of Antigua, Falmouth Harbour is a haven for yachts and super-yachts from around the world. It is known for its vibrant nightlife and hosts numerous highprofile events like Antigua Sailing Week. The surrounding area offers a variety of waterfront dining options including Club Sushi and the new container village consisting of a variety of eateries with multiple outside dining areas creating a perfect spot to view the superyachts and play – “Guess how much that one cost?” – one of our favourite family games!
t ENGLISH HARBOUR
English Harbour, located next to Falmouth Harbour, is renowned for its rich maritime history and preservation of 18th-century naval buildings. Along with Falmouth Harbour it is a focal point during the annual Antigua Sailing Week, which attracts sailing enthusiasts from all over the globe. It is home to Nelson’s Dockyard, a restored Georgian naval dockyard and UNESCO World Heritage site, and also has access to Fort Berkeley. English Harbour attracts visitors seeking a mix of history, culture and recreation. If you fancy a visit, be sure to stop at Admirals Inn for some food or drink, and consider for a second as you sip your rum punch, that once upon a time Nelson himself probably drank rum in exactly the same spot...

But to give you a little helping hand, here is a list of some of the most captivating beaches, you really won’t want to miss, organized by coastal region and marked on the map for easy exploration.
WEST COAST
A Popular Paradise; With pristine beaches seamlessly leading one, into the next, creating an almost endless shoreline, the West Coast beckons sunset worshippers and water enthusiasts alike.
Darkwood Beach: The calm, gentle and crystal clear waters of Darkwood Beach make it perfect for swimming and snorkelling; with great visibility and a variety of marine life. And now the waterpark is back too – which is absolutely perfect for entertaining kids and adults alike! There is also a beach bar and restaurant which rents loungers and umbrellas, so it’s the perfect spot for a relaxing beach day, with no pre-planning needed. The sunsets are spectacular too, if you fancy staying a little later to enjoy one, but be aware that the bars/restaurants will usually shut just before the sun goes down.
Jolly Beach: This expansive stretch of powdery white sand, is popular with visitors as it boasts several beach bars and restaurants, and a lively atmosphere, but if you are seeking shade under the trees or a tranquil nook away from the crowd, don’t worry, the beach is almost
a mile long, and you are sure to find a calm spot. The beach is easily accessed through the Jolly Harbour community, which has a large number of shops and facilities which visitors can use including, supermarket, pharmacy, beach bars, restaurants, and jet ski rental. The powdery white sand and the shallow, clear waters make Jolly Beach ideal for long, leisurely walks and swimming. This is our local favourite, with its stunning sunsets making it the perfect afternoon outing and be sure to watch for the “green flash”!
Pearns Point: A sanctuary for those seeking seclusion. This peninsula flaunts seven pristine beaches, often deserted, giving you the luxury of feeling like you have found your very own personal haven.
Dickenson Bay Beach: WWhite powder sand beaches, gentle turquoise waters and located just a few miles north of St. John’s, it is probably one of Antigua’s most famous and frequently visited beaches due to its vibrant atmosphere and plethora of amenities. Visitors can indulge in a variety of water sports or just spend time relaxing in the tranquil waters which are ideal for swimmers of all ages. We love the beach front dining here and the proximity of the numerous restaurants to the water, making it one of our favourite day time spots.

Long Bay: A peaceful retreat, Long Bay is known for its calm and tranquil waters, making it an ideal spot for floating and leisurely swimming. A nearby bar ensures you are refreshed and gives you the opportunity to mix with other beach goers if you desire. Devil’s Bridge is right nearby, but if you do go exploring, tread carefully on the rock bridge as the sea surges below and the waves can make it a little slippy.
Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay: Featured in Conde Nast’s top 100 beaches, this crescent shaped beach captures hearts. Its location on the East Coast exposes it to the Atlantic Ocean’s waves, making it an excellent spot for bodyboarding. Or if you prefer to lounge on the beach and soak up the sun the fine pinkish-white sand and the vibrant coral reefs make it a haven for sunbathers and snorkelers alike. There are rental shops and schools in the area where beginners can learn and experienced riders can gear up.
Prickly Pear Island: A small uninhabited island offering a more secluded beach experience just off Antigua’s main turf. Accessed from the Hodges Bay Hotel, a trip to this remote island for lunch is a wonderful day out.
Great Bird Island: A favoured stop for island-hoppers, it enchants visitors with serene beaches, beginner-friendly snorkelling spots and of course the bird watching opportunities. Only accessible by boat, it is often easiest to find a tour that stops for lunch or get a private charter to take you.

Morris Bay: Morris Bay beach is a hidden gem and a paradise for swimmers, boasting an exceptional snorkelling spot. The beach is less crowded than some of the more popular spots, making it a perfect retreat for those looking to unwind in a peaceful environment. The surrounding palm trees and lush vegetation add to the tropical paradise feel, making Morris Bay beach a must go, for nature lovers and those who love the underwater world. This is one of our favourites for snorkelling, and once we’ve built up an appetite we love to satisfy our taste buds with a fresh fruit salad from the local stall or barbecued chicken from the roadside vendors.
If you think you have found the best beach in your first days in Antigua & Barbuda, don’t stop visiting new ones, we have had many, many favourites over the years as they all have something slightly different to offer.
Rendezvous Bay: This secluded gem, accessible via a hike or ATV, promises serenity and pristine waters once you get there. Its shaded areas are perfect for leisurely relaxation.
Pigeon Point Beach: A picturesque and popular beach located close to Falmouth Harbour. This stunning and historically significant beach offers a combination of natural beauty, water activities, and a touch of Antigua’s colonial past. Whether you’re interested in sunbathing, swimming, exploring history, or simply relaxing in a scenic setting and enjoying a gourmet meal at Catherine’s Café, Pigeon Point Beach has something to offer you.
Galleon Beach: Located at the entrance to Nelson’s Dockyard this beach is known for being a favourite spot for sea turtles. If you’re lucky, you can spot these gentle creatures swimming in the crystal-clear waters or even nesting on the beach, especially during certain times of the year. For those brave enough to venture from the beach and over a few rocks; a short walk to the east end will lead you out to the Pillars of Hercules, where you’ll find opportunities for some deeper snorkelling. We often visit by boat but it is just as easy by car, and is a great day out for the family with very calm waters and a restaurant that has everything you might need for a day on the beach.

Long Bay is my favourite beach. It’s very shallow, which makes it perfect for my girls and only a three-minute drive from home so very convenient. It’s also special because it’s where I went on my first date with my husband. He surprised me with a night picnic on the beach. We decided to take a walk down to Pineapple Hotel so he could show me where turtles had laid their nests. When we came back, we saw some rustling near the tree where we had set up our picnic. He ran ahead to check, and it turned out to be a group of donkeys eating our food and making a big mess of everything. We both had such a good laugh, it’s a memory I’ll never forget.

Deep Bay (five island, behind by royal cove) is my favourite beach because looking at the view from the historical sight high in the hills, gives an element that the other beaches around the country do not carry. The beach also has a bridge which makes taking photos fun and the appearance of the crystal clear water never changes throughout the season.

I was born and raised on the island and so far I’ve visited 23 beaches, of those, my favorite would have to be Darkwood Beach, the beautiful reef close to the shoreline makes it truly special. It’s my go-to spot for recreational fun, especially for free diving and capturing the stunning aquatic environment. But the beach isn’t just about adventure for me, it’s where so many memories are made.
Chairman ABHTA
The blue seas and calm sands of Darkwood Beach are undeniable, making it one of my absolute favourites.

Hawksbill beach is my favourite beach because of the golden vibrant colour and unique grain and texture of the sand, which makes it stand out amongst the other beaches.

I actually don’t have a favourite beach, I’m not a beach person, I’m a person who wants to hike and then have tea at the top of a hill. BUT, if I had to choose it would probably be, Two Foot Bay in Johnson’s Point, just at the end of Boot Hill Road. Adopt-A-Coastline has adapted the beach and there’s now a bin and there are seating chairs, so you can go and chill out and because the water is shallow my son is able to play in the water and he enjoys it.

My favourite beach would have to be Pinching Bay. As it’s only reachable by boat it’s very secluded, with wild goats sometimes roaming the beach and turtles nesting in the sand, not to mention the crystal clear water and the amazing snorkelling. My dog Saltie loves it too, but the beach she actually visits most is North Beach, because it’s closer to where we live in Jolly Harbour and often empty, so it’s perfect for our sunset walks.
As long term residents of Antigua, we feel very passionately about ensuring that the paradise island we have the immense privilege to call home, is respected and protected. These are a few of the initiatives that are helping Antigua & Barbuda stay one of the Caribbean’s most pristine destinations.
RESPECT PARADISE, KEEP IT PRISTINE
The beaches of Antigua and Barbuda are without doubt some of the cleanest you will ever have the pleasure of visiting. And this is no accident. This is the result of a concerted effort by The Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Tourism Board to ensure that both residents and visitors to this paradise island, respect their environment, and endeavour to leave it the way they found it… or better.
COOL IS CLEAN
In 2019 The Tourism Authority, unveiled a local marketing campaign called #CoolisClean which coincided with a global marketing campaign called #WhatCoolLooksLike. The efforts were inspired by wellness and environmental policy changes by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda led by the Ministry of Health, Wellness and The Environment. One of these policies was to prohibit the importation, distribution, sale and use of plastic shopping bags which targeted 5 types of plastics that accounted for 90% of the plastics released into the environment.
Antigua & Barbuda is now PLASTIC SHOPPING BAG FREE, so make sure you bring a reusable shopping bag with you or purchase one from a local vendor on island and use it any time you’re headed to the shops. If you forget, you can purchase a paper bag or a fibre bag in the bigger supermarkets.
GOOD HUMANS 268
Good Humans 268 Inc was founded by Joshuanette Francis, who is living and thriving with a disability. This nonprofit organisation is dedicated to furthering environmental sustainability and assisting individuals with disabilities in Antigua and Barbuda. Facilitating constructive partnerships, programs and dialogues that result in changes that benefit not only individuals with disabilities but the entire country. Their guiding principle - “Necessary for some, useful for all.”
They recently did some great work at the Antigua Carnival, supporting the event’s waste efforts, and it revealed something powerful: people will respond positively when they see sustainability being practiced intentionally. Their team was on the ground, collecting and sorting waste from all the bands and spectators. It wasn’t just about cleaning up, it was a statement. A proof that with planning, Carnival can be joyful, vibrant, and clean.
As a visitor, you can play a part too. Choose hotels and restaurants that support their initiatives, use recycling bins when you see them around the island, donate to the charities and spread the word about their incredible work.
KEEP ANTIGUA NICE
The Adopt a Coastline Initiative is aimed at changing the attitudes and behaviour of local children through mentoring youth stewards to conserve and protect the marine and coastal assets in Antigua and Barbuda. It is a grassroots campaign that includes beach clean-ups, community action and education, and public awarenessraising.

So when you visit any of the beaches on the island please be sure to clean up after yourself and keep Antigua pristine for everyone to enjoy. And if you spot any rubbish that isn’t your own, maybe take that away with you too...
THIS IS TURTLE TERRITORY
In some areas of Antigua along the beaches where turtles are known to nest, you will notice red lights. The hatchlings have an instinctive response to light which leads them towards the sea. When artificial lights were previously put in on the beach fronts these hatchlings would get confused and stray. So the red lights have been put in to prevent baby turtles from going the wrong way.
Sea turtles lay their eggs in the beach sand, so if you’re on a beach that is well know for turtle activity, and you’re looking to dig a hole or a moat for your sandcastle make sure you don’t dig above the surf line in the dry sand, but rather do it in wet sand where there will not be any eggs.
VISITING PARADISE MEANS HELPING TO PROTECT IT!
Here are some easy ways you can be a responsible, eco-aware traveler while enjoying Antigua and Barbuda’s natural beauty:
n Don’t litter. Keep beaches, trails, and streets clean.
n Bring a reusable tote or beach bag with you to the shops and the beach.
n Don’t dig in the dry sand at beaches known for turtle activity, there could be eggs buried there. If you accidentally uncover them, recover them and leave them be.
n Protect yourself and the environment by choosing sunscreen that is reef safe and chemical free.
n If you’re snorkelling or diving, don’t touch coral or marine life. And remember, feeding wild animals can do more harm than good.
n Shop at local markets, dine at island-run restaurants, and buy authentic crafts. It supports the community and reduces the environmental footprint of imported goods.
n Turn off lights, fans & air conditioning when not in use, small actions make a big difference on small islands.

TOP SNORKEL SPOTS
The following beaches are our top picks to experience some vibrant marine life.
n Deep Bay
Excellent snorkeling along the edges of Fort Barrington. Strong swimmers can venture out to the shipwreck, where coral-encrusted remains provide a home to a wide variety of marine life.
n Carlisle Bay
A beautiful bay where turtles are frequently seen. In recent seasons, dolphins have also been spotted here, making it an especially memorable snorkeling destination.
n Morris Bay
Snorkel the walk in reef by the shore near the old hotel or explore the jagged volcanic rock formations. Keep an eye out for lobsters, moonfish, and other fascinating marine life.
n Pearn’s Point
Snorkel around the striking red rocks and discover a little inlet. In summer, a small sandy beach sometimes appears, which you can swim up to, adding to the charm of this hidden spot.
n Prickly Pear Island
Shallow waters make this ideal for children or less confident swimmers. You’ll see plenty of small fish close to shore with very little effort.
n Maiden Island
Home to a large man-made reef built from over 3,500 “Reef Balls” as part of a coral restoration project. The project involved attaching propagated coral fragments, particularly threatened Staghorn and Elkhorn corals, to the Reef Balls and planting red mangrove seedlings to stabilize the shoreline, which has fostered a diverse marine ecosystem making it perfect for snorkelling.
With coral fragments, thriving marine life, and even mangrove plantings, this is a fascinating snorkel spot with an ecological twist.
n Cades Reef
Reachable only by boat, this reef is a must for confident swimmers. The waters can be choppy, but the reward is an abundance of colorful fish, including parrotfish, and the occasional reef shark if you’re lucky.
n Green Island
A prime spot for turtle sightings thanks to its lush sea grass beds, which provide a natural feeding ground.
n Darkwood Beach
A lovely walk-in spot with shallow water and a small reef. Swim along the shoreline or head to the rocks at the far end, which curve around the hill towards Turners Beach –an area where turtles are often spotted.

But the magic? It’s already here.
ANCHORING YOUR FUTURE IN ANTIGUA: PROPERTY, COMMUNITY & CITIZENSHIP
Antigua has always stood out in the Caribbean for its beaches, climate and easy access to the wider world. The island receives direct flights from North America and Europe, has a modern international airport and is home to one of the region’s International Baccalaureate schools. It is also consistently ranked among the lowest-crime destinations in the region, making it an attractive place to live and invest. With a population of just under 100,000, Antigua continues to punch above its weight and today is recognized as one of the fastest-growing economies in the Caribbean. This growth is matched by the increasing number of international residents who are choosing Antigua not only for holidays but also for a more permanent base.
Success at The Beach Houses and The Gardens
Two Elmsbridge communities best illustrate this success. The Beach Houses, a boutique enclave of eleven homes on the south coast beside Falmouth Harbour, is now fully reserved. Owners there are enjoying a neighborhood that balances privacy with access to one of the world’s great sailing hubs. As homeowner Jan Strawson put it, “It has been almost a year since I moved into my villa and it feels both peaceful and connected — the perfect balance.”
On the west coast, The Gardens has become equally established. Set within the well-known Jolly Harbour, the island’s largest gated community, The Gardens offers a collection of turn-key homes in a walkable setting that includes a golf course, marina, shops and restaurants. The latest four-bedroom villa was completed this year, with several more homes under construction and more scheduled to begin this season. With only a limited number of plots remaining, demand remains strong from buyers who see the value in joining a community that combines established infrastructure with new growth.
The wider Jolly Harbour area is also undergoing significant improvements. Infrastructure upgrades, marina investments and new amenities are all underway, reinforcing its position as one of Antigua’s most dynamic neighborhoods. For Gardens owners, this means their property is tied not just to a home but to the evolution of a vibrant and expanding community.
The Beach Houses, a private enclave of eleven homes on Antigua’s south coast overlooking Falmouth Harbour. Now fully reserved, the community offers owners a rare balance of privacy and connection to the island’s renowned sailing hub.
Year-Round Rental Strength
A major factor driving interest is Antigua’s maturing rental market. Once seen as a primarily winter destination, the island is now attracting steady demand year-round. According to Antigua’s Ministry of Tourism, visitor arrivals in the summer months have grown by more than 30 percent over the last five years, while average daily rates for short-term rentals remain competitive across all seasons.
Villas at The Gardens have mirrored this trend, with owners reporting high occupancy throughout the calendar year. Guests include not only traditional vacationers but also digital workers, families looking for extended stays, and yacht crews seeking comfortable bases ashore. For investors, this translates into reliable rental income and consistent performance, making villa ownership an asset that works beyond personal enjoyment.
Citizenship and Property Together
Beyond lifestyle and investment potential, Antigua’s Citizenship by Investment program continues to be an important draw. Regional governments have recently moved to make their programs more thorough, with new standards designed to align more closely with international norms. While these steps strengthen the programs, they also signal that the process will only become more demanding in future years.
Increasing global political and economic instability has led more buyers from North America and the UK to seek reassurance abroad. In 2025, the UK is expected to have the largest net outflow of high-net-worth individuals ever recorded for any country. Against this backdrop, Antigua offers a credible and appealing alternative, combining exceptional quality of life with long-term security for families.
When paired with property ownership, citizenship becomes a natural extension of the investment. Families gain not only a home in Antigua, but also the mobility, tax planning options and security that a second citizenship provides. This combination creates a foundation that is both practical and deeply reassuring, offering a complete solution for those looking to anchor part of their lives in the Caribbean.
A Complete Approach
Elmsbridge and its sister company Citizens International continue to deliver this combination. The group offers a boutique approach with deep local roots. The team has lived the transition themselves and understands the details that matter when relocating to the Caribbean. With a licensed citizenship agent in-house and a staff drawn from multiple countries, they combine global expertise with on-the-ground knowledge of Antigua. From architectural design and construction through furnishing, landscaping and long-term property management, every stage is handled with care and attention to detail. For owners, that means one trusted partner overseeing the process and ensuring that each decision, from tile choices to gardens, supports a home built to last.
For families and individuals seeking both lifestyle and security, this combination of premium property and citizenship, delivered with hands-on service, offers one of the strongest opportunities in the Caribbean today.
The Gardens, a collection of thirty-seven villas within the well-established Jolly Harbour community. Limited plots remain, with shared ownership from US$300,000 and full ownership starting at US$1.3M. Owners enjoy a walkable marina and golf neighborhood that continues to benefit from major upgrades and investment.

OUR BARBUDA GUIDE
TRAVELLING TO BARBUDA
BY HELICOPTER
Calvin Air does not only operate tours of Antigua, Barbuda and Montserrat, they also assist citizens when other options to transport medical emergencies are unavailable. They are not just a great company, with a philanthropic side. They are just about the most exciting way to travel to Barbuda and take in all of the incredible landscape (or should I say waterscape) from the sky. This is a popular service for visitors to Nobu and Barbuda Ocean Club. Contact them through their website for more information
There is no public transport on Barbuda and there are no taxi ranks either. So if you need a taxi to greet you on arrival, make sure you book one in advance.
BY PLANE
A small 7 seater plane run by SVG Airlines, leaves twice daily from Antigua to Barbuda, departing once in the early morning, the other, late afternoon. The flight arrives and leaves from the small Codrington airport which is a short walk into the village. There is a very strict weight allowance policy, so if you are over-weight in person or in luggage you will be charged extra. We would recommend you double check your reservation a few days before the date you fly, just in case there are any time changes or cancellations.
BY BOAT
The Barbuda Express ferry operates between St. John's and Barbuda, departing from a dock conveniently located near the end of High Street by Heritage Quay. It's an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers. The journey takes approximately an hour and forty-five minutes. Even on calm days, the ride can feel a bit rough if you're not accustomed to sea travel, so we recommend taking seasickness medication beforehand to ensure a more enjoyable experience. For the best views, we suggest sitting on the deck. While there is some partial cover, bringing a towel is a good idea to protect yourself from occasional ocean spray.

n
CODRINGTON HOUSE
Codrington House was the home of the Codrington family, which Barbuda’s sole town is named after. Known by the locals as Willy Bob or Highland House, it now houses a small museum showcasing the island’s history and culture. It is the starting point for Darby’s Cave and is also the highest point on the island so while you take in the history you can also take in one of the best views of the island’s stunning coastline.
n ARTSY YAADIE GALLERY
Stacie-Ann Shaw AKA Artsy Yaadie is a Jamaican architect and creative with a passion for the fine arts. Her work is heavily inspired by life and culture in the Caribbean and colorful, contemporary folk art. Artsy Yaadie has been living in Codrington Village, Barbuda since 2019 and welcomes the public to view her various works at her home studio.
n MARTELLO TOWER
This cylindrical stronghold, built in the 1800s was essentially stolen from the Corsicans who had been using this particular fortress design since the 15th century. It was the strength of the tower and the 360-degree capability which impressed the British most and these Martello towers were built all over the British and Irish coasts as well as in Canada, South Africa, and of course here in Barbuda. The British did however get the name wrong when they appropriated the design, and it should in fact be called Mortella Tower. It was used as a look-out tower, able to sight in-coming or wrecked ships and signal the information onward to the village of Codrington, several miles north.
n FRIGATE BIRD SANCTUARY
Barbuda is not for tourists looking for nightlife or an abundance of tourist attractions; it’s for those who wish to get back to nature, to relax, unwind, admire the natural beauty and wildlife of this almost untouched island and meet the local people. We have told you about the Frigate Bird Sanctuary and the Caves, but here are a couple of other things you should check out when you visit.
The first stop was the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home of one of the largest colonies of frigate birds in the world. Located on Codrington Lagoon, our guided tour, led by Kool Cat, who was very jovial and really informative, allowed us to observe these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. Quiet and respectful observation is key as you are taken out across the lagoon in a small boat, moving slowly and carefully through the water so that you can get as up-close and personal to the birds as you can without disturbing them. If you are lucky enough to go during mating season which is in autumn, you will also get to see the male birds proudly displaying their big red throats to impress and attract their mates.
n THE CAVES
The Caves at Two Foot Bay, are well worth a visit, particularly because inside Indian Cave you can see the only known Ancient Amerindian petroglyphs carved by Arawak Indians.
Darby’s Cave is not actually a true cave, but a vertical-sided sinkhole formed by a solution below-ground that subsequently collapsed and it really is a magnificent sight to see. The sinkhole is approximately 70 ft deep and the hole is approximately 350 ft in diameter. On one side of it, an intermittent drip of water has created stalactites and stalagmites, and some of them are huge. In the center of the cave is its own interior ecosystem resembling a tropical rainforest. The flora and fauna includes palmetto palms, bats, birds and frogs, which is in stark contrast to the surrounding dry bush land.
Dark Cave has a narrow entrance leading to a vast cavern which contains a pool of water. Due to the Amerindian Artefacts found in the area it is thought that this cave was probably a source of water for the Amerindian. It is the habitat for a rare species of Amphipod, the blind eye shrimp, as well as several species of Bats.
The caves go on for around a mile, and if you hike through and up to the top of the cliff you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the coast.
Exploring a new place can feel a little daunting, but with so many guided tour experiences on offer here in Antigua, you can relieve the pressure by letting them take care of all the logistics, while you turn those feelings of intimidation into excitement.
ADVENTURE MADE EASY
There is no better way to explore the natural wonders of the islands of Antigua & Barbuda than with a local guide who will take you to all the right places and share their knowledge with you as you adventure together by land, sea and sky.
n ANTIGUA RAINFOREST ZIPLINE TOUR
For the thrill seekers among you Antigua Rainforest Zipline Tour is an exhilarating adventure flying through the trees. You may feel a wave of apprehension (or if you’re like me, total fear) wash over you as you are getting yourself harnessed up and receiving the safety briefing, but that’s totally normal. Hard hatted and with our shorts strapped up higher than they were designed for, we made our way to the first zip line, it is thankfully short, to ease you in. However, it is worth noting that once you take that first step off the first platform there is no going back. All the platforms are only connected by the ziplines after that and each one is a gradual build of distance and height, the final line being around 300ft long and 150ft above the ground. If you do decide to do the tour make sure you do the extended one as it has the longest lines and is the most fun. www.antiguarainforestzipline.com
n JOHNSON TAXI AND TOURS

n STINGRAY CITY ANTIGUA
Stingray &
Snorkel
Tour
Stingray City is one of our favourite places to visit, especially when we have family or friends visiting us. It is an experience that our children love and our youngest son first got to experience the massive, 200lb southern stingrays at age five. The day is an exciting but ultimately relaxed one, after a ten minute boat trip, you stop at a floating jetty, and right upon disembarking you get your first glimpse of the rays. Wading into the shallow water for the first time is quite daunting, the stingrays are massive and they do not do much to avoid you but rather glide past your legs with their velvet soft skin. After a few minutes the terror subsides and gives way to wonder as you’re able to interact with these amazing animals, holding them and feeding them.
n LAVISCOUNT ISLAND
You can combine your stingray city adventure with many other tour activities, including a trip to Laviscount Island. Laviscount Island is a sanctuary for the Aldabra giant tortoise, the planet’s oldest living animal which can grow to over 600lbs and live to up 200years. It is a private island getaway and as well as the giant tortoises, there are also Iguanas, Parrots, Walking Trails, a large beach area, floating dock and Mangrove Snorkel, viewing and eating deck and an Ice Cream shop to enjoy while you are there. So, it is suitable for one hour tours, or even half or full day island breaks, if you fancy taking your time.
We always have a really fun time at Laviscount island, interacting and learning about these prehistoric animals and petting and feeding the giant tortoises with carrots provided by the guides. They will bite anything that you put near them though, including feet, ankles, fingers, flipflops and bottoms. So careful of your fingers when you’re feeding them and don’t stand in one place too long, they may move slowly, but you can become surrounded quicker than you think...

ANTIGUA RACING CUP & ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK
It is the beginning of a new chapter in Antigua’s yachting story, with the launch of the Antigua Racing Cup which will take place just before Antigua Sailing Week in April 2026.
The Antigua Racing Cup will be fast, focused and fiercely competitive and aimed at racing purists who crave the thrill of high-energy coastal racing.
Over four action-packed days, crews will take on exhilarating courses along Antigua’s spectacular southern coast, with big seas, balmy temperatures, and the trade winds that make the island one of the world’s premier sailing destinations.
It will be perfect for teams who want to test their limits before heading off to summer regattas elsewhere and when the racing ends, English Harbour will come alive with music, food, and festivities that celebrate the very best of Antiguan hospitality.
Antigua Sailing Week will be more focused on tradition, community, & celebration as this iconic regatta shifts back to its traditional point-to-point format, with each day’s race finishing at a different scenic spot around the island. Unlike the Racing Cup’s pure competition focus, Sailing Week will entertain a mix of boat types and crews, and will be tailored to cruisers, rally-style participants and bareboat charter groups.
Courses will be point to point for ralliers and for those who want to compete, additional marks will be dropped, tacking duels will commence and courses will be timed as the competitors enjoy a different coastal course each day. Each day’s sailing will flow into lively after-race socials, infused with local culture.
Having two separate events, each with a narrower focus, brings a more immersive and enriching yachting experience to a wider audience. So be sure to visit in April and enjoy all the boats, beers and beautiful scenery!

If you're a cricket enthusiast visiting Antigua, you are in for a treat! Cricket is the National sport of Antigua & Barbuda, and we are fiercely passionate about it. When you visit Antigua you can expect to see cricket being played all over the island, on the beaches, village greens, and of course in the two stadiums on island that host International matches.
WE DON’T LIKE CRICKET… WE LOVE IT!
Antigua & Barbuda has produced some cricket legends over the years. In particular, icons Sir Vivian Richards, Richie Richardson, Curtly Ambrose and Andy Roberts, affectionately referred to as The Four Knights, put Antigua and Barbuda on the world map for cricket.
Sir Vivian Richards Stadium
Named after the legendary Antiguan cricketer Sir Vivian Richards, this modern stadium is the heart of cricket in Antigua. It was built for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup and continues to host international matches, including Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and T20s.
If there is a match during your visit, attending a game at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is a must. The atmosphere is electric when the West Indies team is playing and you can enjoy the game along with local fans who are passionate and knowledgeable about cricket. When there are no matches, the stadium occasionally offers guided tours, which include access to the field, stands, and facilities. It’s a great way to learn more about the stadium’s history and significance.
Outside the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, you will find a statue of Sir Vivian Richards. It’s a popular spot for photos and a tribute to one of the greatest cricketers of
all time. Inside the stadium, there is also a small museum dedicated to Sir Vivian Richards. It features memorabilia, including cricket gear, photographs, awards, and other items celebrating his illustrious career and contributions to the sport.
The Antigua Recreation Ground is one of the oldest and most iconic cricket grounds in the Caribbean. Before the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was built, ARG was the main venue for international cricket in Antigua.
This ground has witnessed some of the greatest moments in cricket history. Sir Vivian Richards scored the fastest Test century (56 balls) against England here in 1986, and Brian Lara set the world record for the highest individual score in Test cricket (375 runs) against England in 1994. Although international matches are no longer held here, it is still worth visiting, just to walk on the same field where cricket legends made history.
Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG)
Formerly known as the Stanford Cricket Ground, this venue is now owned by the West Indies Cricket Board and has been revitalized as a cricket academy and practice facility. It also hosts local and regional matches and practice sessions, so definitely check the schedule to see if there are any games or events happening during your visit.
Antigua’s rich cricketing history and culture make it a fantastic destination for cricket lovers. Whether you're visiting iconic stadiums, experiencing local matches, or learning about cricket legends, Antigua offers a variety of experiences that celebrate the island's deep connection to the sport.
DISCOVERING SHIRLEY HEIGHTS
Famous for its spectacular panoramic views of the island and surrounding Caribbean Sea, you can enjoy vistas of English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, and the island of Montserrat in the distance on a clear day. It is also truly one of the best places in Antigua to watch the sun dip below the horizon, filling the sky with stunning hues of orange, pink, and purple.
Home to the remains of a colonial-era fortification that dates back to the late 18th century, Shirley Heights was an important military post for the British Navy, protecting the island from potential invaders. The site includes several well-preserved ruins, such as the gun emplacements, barracks, and other military buildings and walking through these historical remnants offers a glimpse into Antigua's past.
Shirley Heights is also well known for its lively Sunday evening parties, also known as the Shirley Heights Lookout or Reggae Sundays. Locals and tourists gather together to enjoy live steel pan, reggae vibes, BBQ and
rum punch. It’s an excellent opportunity to taste local flavors while enjoying great music and company. Local artisans also set up stalls at Shirley Heights, especially during these Sunday gatherings, where they sell handcrafted souvenirs, jewellery, and artwork; providing a great opportunity to purchase authentic Antiguan art and crafts.
If you enjoy hiking there are also trails that meander through the surrounding hills and forests and up to Shirley Heights. It’s of moderate difficulty, but there are plenty of spots to rest and take in the scenery or spot local wildlife along the way.
So whether you are a history enthusiast, nature lover, lover of scenic views or seeker of vibrant local culture, Shirley Heights will provide you with a memorable experience that captures the essence of Antigua's charm.

Visiting Shirley Heights in Antigua is a must for anyone exploring the island, as it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and vibrant local culture.
By day, Khan Cordice serves as Antigua and Barbuda’s Director of Culture; by night, he transforms into one of the region’s most celebrated steel pan musicians. We caught up with Khan during Carnival season ahead of Panorama, to talk music, mentorship, and why there’s no sound quite like pan.
STEEL PAN, SOUL & CARNIVAL SPIRIT
Khan, can you tell us a bit about your journey with the steel pan; how did it all begin for you?
One of my friends invited me down to the pan yard. Prior to that, I had never played steel pan, and I really just went down there for a lime, I had no intentions of playing. But at the Hells Gate Steel Orchestra it’s their philosophy that once you show up at the door, you will be invited to play. So I kept being asked and eventually I played. I really had no intentions of playing pan, it was just something to do. But by the end of that season I was on the Panorama stage.
You wear many hats, Director of Culture by day, professional steel pan musician by night. How do you balance those roles, and how do they complement each other?
It is really a balancing act. But for me, the balance is threefold, a trinity or a trifecta, being director, being a professional musician and educator, but also being a family man as well. In my capacity as director of culture, often it’s a bit tedious because it’s dealing with the administrative side of the creation, the creativity, the creatives, the work that they’re doing and trying to find better platforms for young people to develop. Then as a professional musician, I am continuing to build myself as a creative and that can be very difficult because sometimes as it requires a certain level of focus, a certain level of inspiration in order to create new material, and stay ahead of the game. What I will say is that my music side sort of keeps me grounded in my director of culture and my administrative capacities. When I have the stresses of that life, playing music, writing music, having that escape helps me. And then having my family as well, being very much a part of the process - my two daughters play, my wife plays as well, so that is also beneficial to me.
Can you walk us through a brief history of the steel pan in Antigua, how it took root and evolved over the years?
I will start by showing some respect to the people of Trinidad & Tobago for the invention. These pioneers of this instrument are considered to be some of the greatest engineers in the world. Here in Antigua and Barbuda, the steel pan started around the 1940’s in the Point and Villa community, by a group of men who were not considered at that point in time to be geniuses or engineers. The steel pan was looked down upon. The people who played this instrument were considered bad men, gangsters, outcasts.
People would be beaten for playing this instrument. Young people weren’t allowed to play it. If you did, you were considered devilish or ungodly. So one of the first things that steel pan needed to do was to fight for acceptance. That acceptance came when it started being appreciated by some of the affluent musicians in society at the time. People like Bertha Higgins and Vere Griffith, musicians who came from more affluent families that saw the instrument as much more than a drum, but as a musical instrument like any other.
There is an understanding that the then Governor; Lord Baldwin, his role in the acceptance of steel pans would have been the little ball that rolled into the big snowball. He fought for the rights of the steel band and initiated what they call the first panorama competition or steel band competition here in Antigua and Barbuda back in 1949. Opening the doors to understanding and appreciation for the art form.
For first-time visitors, what’s something they should know about the cultural significance of the steel pan in Antigua and Barbuda?
Historically, steel pan is probably one of the largest cultural movements that we have in Antigua and Barbuda. Hells Gate Steel Orchestra, which I am The Musical Director and Lead Arranger for is currently celebrating 80 years and over the last eight decades this instrument has found a way to infuse itself in the backbone and the fabric of our culture, our music and our identity as a Caribbean people.
We fast forward to 2025 and this same outcast instrument is now in many of the schools and churches across the island, and steel pan is being performed in some of the most prestigious places not just across the island, but across the world.
In your view, how has the role of steel pan changed in local music and cultural events over the past decade?
So you find a lot of these schools of pan are being run by people who just give their time on a Saturday or Sunday
afternoon, but they look at the opportunity to engage young people and more recently engage older people too. We do have some students that are 60 years old and there’s a lady in one of our sessions that’s 70 plus years old. So to engage with people like that and help build new appreciation for the art form and increase the value of the art form we are also developing the community on an artistic level.
You’ve been a regular at Panorama during Antigua Carnival, what is it about that event that excites you every year?
As one of the lead arrangers here in Antigua and Barbuda, each year I look forward to the panorama for many reasons. To be able to engage with the band - they come in every year, some new faces, some old faces and I see the excitement on their faces when I provide them with the artistic vision. To be able to engage with the fans out there and other young musicians and show them that the boundaries of music can actually be tampered with. I just want to inspire and connect and really try to appeal to people, through the music. We practice most of the season in our pan yard down on Bay Street, but then the last week before Panorama we come over to the big yard to hear what the band sounds like in this grand space. That is something I really look forward to, every single year.
For someone coming to Antigua Carnival for the first time, what can they expect from the Panorama experience?
Panorama, is one of the best shows to be at! It is a spectacle of musicianship and artistry. You experience steel bands at the highest level and it is the largest display of steel pan talent in Antigua and Barbuda. This year we have eight bands competing in the competition, bands ranging from 60 to 110 players. And having a hundred people performing on one stage, playing together, with the nice choreography and the flashing lights and all of their decor, and just the quality of music that comes out of the arrangements, it is always an amazing experience. I mean, it really is a spectacle.
Could you recommend a few local artists or bands that tourists should check out while they’re visiting Antigua?
In terms of steel bands, I would say all of them! Check
out the Antigua Dance Academy that does a bit more Afro-Caribbean dance and music, with African drums. Check out steel bands like the Hells Gate, Harmonites, Gemonites, and Halcyon, plus so many others. And check out any of the iron bands too. Go with them, sit with them, ask them about their legacy.
What are your favourite venues on the island to perform in, or to hear live music?
Visitors should check out the Landing Strip that’s popping every Friday and every Sunday or you can check out Leianna’s Bar and Jazz Lounge. What is beautiful about these venues is they bring back that sort of club vibe that happened back in the 80s and 90s, dance music that is now considered local, traditional dance music.
Finally, what does music, especially the steel pan, mean to you personally?
Music saved my life. I could safely say without music I wouldn’t be here. And not just here, figuratively, but here, physically. I had a friend that I used to lime with every day. But when I got into steel pan, we were hanging out and liming less because I was spending a lot of time in the Panyard. He got shot when I was in the Panyard. So when I say, I may not have been here physically, that is what I’m talking about. I am also so grateful to music for the opportunities that I have been given over the years. To travel, to work, to perform in so many different spaces and engage with so many different people. I’ve travelled the world over playing this instrument and being a part of the music and fabric of Antigua and Barbuda.
It certainly changed my life, which is why I feel indebted, to the community and why I give so much of my time to young people and developing the work that is happening on the ground here in Antigua and Barbuda and across the Caribbean. At Hells Gate Steel Orchestra we engage easily 150 or 160 musicians on an annual basis. We have a state side of about 45 - 47 musicians and to be able to impart to them a lot of what was imparted to me. I want to show them that musical knowledge was one of the greatest gifts that I could have been given and the greatest gift that I can share with them. And I have to do it, I just have to do it. It’s how I was nurtured.
The Antigua & Barbuda Carnival is a vibrant celebration that holds significant cultural and historical importance for the island. Taking place over ten days at the end of July and into the first week of August, it is one of the most popular events in the Caribbean’s summer calendar. Attracting both local and international visitors who flock to Antigua’s capital city of St. John's, to perform, participate and spectate.

CARNIVAL
Your insider’s guide to the Caribbean’s greatest summer festival.
Originating in 1834 as a commemoration of Antigua & Barbuda’s emancipation from slavery, this celebration has evolved over the decades. Today it offers a diverse range of activities and experiences including cultural shows, pageants, concerts, music competitions and vibrant street parades. You can expect to hear infectious beats and see incredible dance performances throughout the celebration as the community comes together to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage in a festive and joyful way.
KEY EVENTS YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS
n The Emancipation Celebration - highlighting the historical roots of this carnival.
n A variety of competitions including the Queen of Carnival Pageant, Party Monarch and Calypso Competitions which showcase the musical and lyrical talents of local artists.
n The Panorama is a steel band competition of epic proportions. It is a spectacular sight to behold, and a wonderful event for the whole family to enjoy.
n T-Shirt Mas is a pre-carnival event that involves participants getting tickets for a particular band they want to party with, then following the float carrying said band, enjoying music, drinks, and food along the way. When you buy a ticket, they will give you the promotional materials for the band you’re following. A media pack including cup, wrist band, glasses, flag, t-shirt, body tattoo.
CARNIVAL FOR BEGINNERS
For those of you who are new to carnival or not entirely sure how involved you want to get, and would prefer to be a passive observer, then your best bet would be to watch The Parade of The Bands.
Typically the parade commences at approximately 2 o’clock and usually starts behind Mount St John’s Hospital on Queen Elizabeth Highway where there is a large open area for parking cars. From there you can walk down and find a spot (preferably in the shade) in front of Government House on the roadside.
There is usually a small spectator stand there and the large open field in front of the Government buildings will give you some flexibility to move back, in case you find the booming reverberations too overwhelming.
It is a great spot to enjoy the music and the spectacle in a relaxed environment away from too much hustle and bustle. You could bring a few drinks along, maybe even some folding chairs, and watch the entire procession as it commences and heads into the main capital of St John’s.
One advantage of this location is that due to the parking being just outside of the Carnival route, you would be able to leave at any point without obstruction as you will be heading away from the parade and the subsequent roads that have been cordoned off.
n Jouvert takes place from 2.00am and goes through to 10am. Participants gather at their respective mas camps and then hit the streets to dance with their troupes. Water, powder, and paint are very often part of the revelry. It’s a wild, carefree, spirited atmosphere, and a truly memorable experience for adults, but not suitable for kids.
n The Parade of The Bands is the pinnacle of the Antigua Carnival. St. John's is transformed into a spectacle of vibrant costumes, frenetic dancing, and beautifully decorated floats. Participants and spectators alike come adorned in elaborate and colorful costumes, creating a stunning visual display. It takes place on the penultimate day of the carnival and if you want to really immerse yourself in the festival, you can get involved by joining one of these costumed carnival bands. This is called 'playing mas'.
All in all you should expect a unique and unforgettable experience immersed in the vibrant colors, infectious music, and strong sense of cultural pride that pulses through the streets when Carnival descends. Every year at Carnival is different, so do check their socials for the most up-to-date information on specific venues and event details, if you do plan to attend.
CARNIVAL UP CLOSE: EXPERIENCING T-SHIRT MAS
Every year, Carly Davies from the Luxury Locations Group dives into the colour and energy of T-Shirt Mas, one of Antigua’s most vibrant Carnival events. We caught up with her to share insider tips – perfect for visitors eager to join the celebration.
How would you describe T-Shirt Mas to someone who’s never heard of it?
Exciting chaos! The atmosphere is incredible. Everyone is feeling good from the moment they arrive and as you walk through town to find your band, everyone else is doing the same and it is just such a great vibe.
How did you choose which troupe/band to join?
My choice was initially due to a friend recommending Barefoot, so now, that’s me! But honestly I think I could do any and enjoy it, because all the bands are amazing.
What was included in your package (T-shirt, drinks, food, security, etc.)?
This year a drink cup (way better than last year as it was more like a yeti cup rather than a plastic cup), a bodysuit (I decided to embrace the Antiguan way this year), a wristband, a carib and flow towel, a carib bag, branded socks and sunglasses.
How much did it cost, and do you think it was worth it?
EC$250 – it was more expensive this year but I always purchase my ticket late. It sounds like a lot of money but your day out is memorable for weeks!
How far in advance should someone book/ register?
I recommend getting your package early as sizes run out and tickets become more expensive.
What time does T-Shirt Mas usually start and finish?
It starts at around 3pm, but we always go an hour later than it starts as they usually set off late (island time style). Going later also gives some reprieve from the midday heat!
How did you get to and from the event?
A friend usually drives. It can be hard to find parking which means walking part of the way but I love seeing other people doing the same, its a bit like the runners nod, something about you all getting involved in the same event makes you automatic allies.
What did you bring with you on the day, and what would you recommend tourists pack?
Sunscreen, a portable mini-fan (a neck fan is best). A small amount of cash as there are street vendors at the end.
How physically demanding was it?
The walking and dancing is fine, but the heat – oh my! I went with face gems and an hour in, they were gone! This year I tied my hair up and that helped!
Did you feel safe in the crowd and along the route?
Yes completely, I can’t speak for anyone else, but everyone who I have encountered is respectful and they are genuinely just having a good time.
How was the security and crowd management?
They were great, they are strict when turning and ensure that you stay away from the front of the truck. When you are on the road there is so much to focus on that you don’t realise you are near a corner etc and the security are quick to guide you.
Any tips for staying hydrated, avoiding sunburn, or staying comfortable?
Water in-between each drink. Layer on the suncream before you go, I have never found a minute to reapply but would recommend it. Caps and bucket hats were worn this year and that will help! Comfortable shoes is a must!
How did locals and tourists mix in the event?
With the music going and the crowd moving there is no separation. I went with a lot of expats and we all know a lot of locals, so we always feel like we’re at home (the only difference is the locals are way better at winding hah!!)
Was there a strong sense of community or culture being shared?
The sense of community is amazing! Across the whole of the carnival period the culture is felt massively – Antigua and Barbuda really enjoy this time of year and the outfits, music and atmosphere is anticipated from the end of carnival until the following year!
What was the atmosphere like on the road?
The atmosphere is electric, the music is loud, the people are singing and dancing. Even if carnival is not for you it is hard not to feel the buzz!
What would you tell someone attending T-Shirt Mas for the first time?
Embrace it. It will probably be different to what you might expect and you will either love it or hate it! As you can tell – I love it!
CARNIVAL PLANNING TIPS
n The Recreation Ground (Antigua & Barbuda’s National Stadium) is where most of the stage events take place, but event details, parade routes, ticketing information etc. can be found on the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Board website or on the Carnival’s official instagram channel - @antiguafestivalsofficial
n Carnival is a very popular time to visit Antigua, so if you are planning on attending, we do recommend you sort out your flights and accommodation well in advance, to avoid disappointment.
n If you want to ‘Play Mas’, you must register and pay a fee/purchase a costume with one of the authorized Antigua Carnival Mas Band’s listed. Costumes cost approximately - 2500-3000EC.
n T-shirt Mas and Jouvert tickets are each approximately 300EC.
n We recommend you get a taxi in, or park outside of town. Parades usually start around 2pm. The High Street is a good place to stand for a good view, but get there early.
n Traditional Caribbean cuisine and refreshing beverages are available, so you can sample delicious local dishes and enjoy tropical drinks while soaking in the carnival atmosphere.

With its carefree spirit and signature Rocks Group polish, it’s the new go-to hangout for locals and visitors alike.
Fifteen years ago, Sheer Rocks opened its metaphorical doors with purple curtains billowing in the trade winds, borrowed cutlery from founder Alex Grimley’s home, and a fresh new energy with the goal of creating something truly unique in Antigua.
15 YEARS ON THE ROCKS: SHEER STYLE, CARIBBEAN SOUL
What began as a small cliffside hideaway quickly grew into an institution; a place where long lunches spill into sunset cocktails, where the rhythms of music and the hues of the Caribbean Sea fuse seamlessly with unforgettable food and service.
Today, Sheer Rocks stands as a regional icon, having earned international acclaim and recognition, including
being named Best Restaurant in the Caribbean three times, by three different publications. Its reputation is legendary – a must-visit destination for locals and travelers alike, but its spirit has never changed. Sheer Rocks has always been about the atmosphere, the sense of place, and the memories made between the plates and plunge pools.
It’s a moment to celebrate not only the restaurant’s journey but also the community of guests, staff, and supporters who have made Sheer Rocks what it is today.
The Evolution of an Icon
From its first days, Sheer Rocks has been defined by transformation. Each renovation, expansion, and addition has reflected the restaurant’s growing role in Antigua’s hospitality scene. The cliffside plunge pools and daybeds made waves on social media. The Rock Pool, Infinity Bar, lower Rock Terrace, and brand-new Cove Pool each brought their own layers of charm.
This November, Sheer Rocks enters a bold new chapter with a refreshed design by Sempre, the awardwinning creative team behind sister restaurant Rokuni’s celebrated interiors. Their vision for Sheer Rocks blends the breezy, barefoot-luxury feel that guests have always loved with a more refined and grounded sense of Caribbean identity. The venue’s iconic rustic textures remain while a fresh new flow and vibe updates the space, ensuring Sheer Rocks continues to feel effortlessly timeless while evolving with the tastes of a new generation. The updates include natural woods, stone and recycled materials to complete the look, with reclaimed wood over 35 years old – everything having had a life before.
Alongside the renovations comes a renewed culinary direction: a menu that leans more deeply than ever into Caribbean flavours and local stories. From the very beginning, Sheer Rocks has celebrated farm-fresh produce and seafood from Antigua’s shores; now, that ethos is woven into the very fabric of the dining experience, elevating local influence within the new recipes with the fantastic and experienced team.
Guests will be able to step back in time with a revival of the restaurant’s original opening menu, complete with opening-day pricing, for a limited period.
A Celebration 15 Years in the Making
To mark this milestone, Sheer Rocks will roll out a series of special promotions and events leading up to the official anniversary in November.
The anniversary month itself will be filled with unforgettable experiences. A collaborative tasting dinner with head chef, Jamal Warner, celebrating 15 years with the company, Alex Grimley, bringing back the old school dishes, and celebrated Antiguan chef Kareem Roberts, introducing the new direction. A special birthday edition of Music on the Rocks, the restaurant’s legendary sunset party, will commemorate the milestone in true Sheer Rocks fashion, featuring special guest DJs and a soundtrack of fifteen years of Sheer Rocks memories.
The brand has also partnered with Champagne House Esterlin for our launch and will be giving away 2000 glasses of their Esterlin Brut Eclat Cuvee, which was just awarded 97/100 in the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards.
Sheer Rocks 2010
The Next Chapter: Rocks Group Expands
While Sheer Rocks remains the beating heart of the Rocks Group portfolio, the milestone also sets the stage for an exciting season of growth. The group, which also includes Catherine’s Café, found in English Harbour, and Rokuni, the acclaimed Sugar Ridge destination opened in December 2024, continues to push the boundaries of Antigua’s dining scene.
This season, Rocks Group is unveiling two new ventures that expand its culinary footprint:
Fat Urchin
Surfacing this summer in Jolly Harbour Marina, Fat Urchin is the boldest departure yet for Rocks Group. The two-story restaurant offers a cheeky, coastal-style pub downstairs and a breezy, elevated bistro upstairs, all set against panoramic marina views. From proper fish and chips to fresh handmade pastas, Fat Urchin combines nostalgia and modern coastal flair, championing local seafood alongside carefully sourced ingredients like Dingley Dell pork sausages for the public house and hand-dived Orkney scallops for the coastal kitchen upstairs. Designed with the community in mind, the restaurant’s playful identity and accessible approach have sparked island-wide buzz even before opening, thanks to cryptic teasers, a guerrilla pop-up, and free fish finger buttys that got everyone talking.
Roca: Pantry, Cellar & Butcher’s Block
Meanwhile, Roca is opening around the corner at Sugar Ridge, as a chic wine shop and deli with everything from dry-aged Dedham Vale beef and local preserves to freshbaked bread, ready-to-eat meals, ice cream, coffee, and an expansive curated wine collection. Guests can enjoy tastings, grab a snack, or shop for pantry essentials, all wrapped in a space that blends Rocks Group’s signature style with casual sophistication. Together, these openings underscore Rocks Group’s role as a pioneer in Antigua’s food and beverage scene, constantly raising the bar while staying rooted in local culture and community.
From Then to Now, And Beyond
What started fifteen years ago with Alex in the kitchen and borrowed cutlery, as a 24 seat restaurant, serving dinner 5 nights a week, has grown into a hospitality empire that continues to innovate while remaining deeply connected to its roots. Sheer Rocks may have changed in look and scale, growing to 80 covers for lunch and 80 for dinner 7 days a week, but its essence is as strong as ever: laid-back luxury, effortless style, and the kind of magic you only find on the edge of the Caribbean Sea.
This November, Antigua celebrates not just a restaurant’s milestone, but the story of how Sheer Rocks – and the broader Rocks Group family, now including Catherine’s Café, Rokuni, Fat Urchin, Rocks Group Events and Roca –helped shape the island’s dining culture and continue to lead the way.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR THOSE WISHING TO IMBIBE OR INGEST ON THE BEACH!
n CATHERINE’S CAFÉ
Pigeon Point Beach
Nestled on Pigeon Point Beach, Catherine's Café exudes the charm of a quintessential French seaside retreat. The menu is a fusion of French and Caribbean cuisine, featuring classics like escargot alongside delectable fresh local seafood, and as one of the three restaurants owned by the Rocks Group you can rest assured that it is going to serve up some gourmet delights and delicious wines.
Dining here feels like a romantic journey to the heart of France, set against Antigua's natural beauty. It is one of our favourite spots to visit and even though it is possibly Antigua’s most upmarket beach bar and restaurant, Catherine’s Café still has a wonderful laid back, casual vibe. It is the perfect spot to enjoy leisurely lunches to the sound of live music and the gentle waves. So we recommend you let the corks pop and the hours drift lazily by as you relax on oversized beach chairs after sampling their delicious delights.
They have regular events like Moules Frites Nights and live beach performances so follow on their socials to keep in the loop.
n DENNIS BEACH BAR RESTAURANT
Ffryes Beach
Just on the corner of Ffryes Beach, this warm and friendly spot owned and run by chef Dennis Thomas, offers the perfect mix of Caribbean specialities and international food, so if you fancy being adventurous and trying a local speciality this is the perfect place to do just that. We had the pleasure of trying two popular dishes: the pan-fried red snapper with creole sauce and the famous goat curry. Both were absolutely delicious. The goat curry, in particular, stood out with its tender meat and rich flavours. They also have a fully stocked bar, but it is the eponymous rum punch which is probably the most common thing ordered by tourists and locals alike. You will be greeted warmly by the fantastic staff who love working here. We even met their adorable cat! This place has a great vibe and a welcoming atmosphere and the view here is absolutely breathtaking, one of the best in Antigua.
n BEACH BUM BAR
Half Moon Bay
This is one of our children’s favourite places to go because of its delicious burgers and chicken wings but it’s the delicious rum punch slushies that do it for us, perfect for those partial to a little pirate juice. With friendly and helpful service, and the option to eat in the restaurant or on the beach, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy some lunch before or after enjoying the spectacular bay it’s located in.

Dickenson Bay Beach
Although not a beach restaurant per se, Kon Tiki Bar is just a hundred yards off the beach and is accessed by boat from Dickenson Bay Beach. A floating platform with a bar on it where the rum punch flows and the party never stops. If you happen to be on a boat trip and have caught some fish the owners are usually happy to bbq it on the side of the platform for you, just as long as you are happy to share!

Darkwood Beach
Located on one of the most well-known beaches in Antigua the Darkwood beach bar is fully covered giving patrons a little respite from the hot Caribbean sun. The restaurant specialises in local cuisine and also boasts a very well stocked bar! If you are interested in having the lobster, I recommend you book, as they sell out fast.

They also offer great brunches, music on the weekends and special day prices so be sure to keep an eye on their socials to get the most out of your dining experience.

A beach-club gem where barefoot luxury meets culinary flair. Executive Chef Eoin Smith and Head Chef Elio Debae helm a globally inspired brasserie-style menu, delivering fresh seafood, vibrant Caribbean flavours and refined simplicity. Feather-soft sand, swaying palms and tranquil cabanas set the stage for leisurely lunches or sunset cocktails, while live DJs and special events keep the energy alive.

For those looking for a truly exceptional fine dining experience, this latest addition to the Tamarind Hills resort has you covered. The menu melds Caribbean delicacies with a variety of international cuisines, the lunch, and dinner menus offer guests unique dishes made with the freshest ingredients and the result is truly delicious. There is an extensive wine list and expertly crafted cocktails to complement the food and some beachside events to keep guests entertained during their meal.
n JULIA’S ON THE BEACH Turner’s Beach
Formerly the “Rum Bus” due to the double decker busses that form part of the entrance and food prep area, Julia’s has a brand new menu which includes a delicious burger and some delectable kebabs. The restaurant and bar seating is right by the beach, so if the kids finish their meal before you, they can head down to the beach and you can keep an eye on them while you finish up. There are sun loungers available too for patrons, but get there early because they run out fast.
n TREE HOUSE CLUB
Fort James Beach
Eat, Drink, Work, Play & Relax! Their breakfast menu has something to suit everyone, and the same goes for their lunch and dinner menus too. In the evening the simple, elegant décor combined with the moonlight reflecting on the water makes for a lovely romantic vibe and with live music to entertain you while you dine on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Salt Plage really is a wonderful spot.

This fruit is native to Antigua and is consumed fresh or used in various dishes and drinks. The shortened name for this version of the fruit is the Antiguan Black, and it is known as the sweetest pineapple in the world. It can be tough to tell when this fruit is ripe, as the green tint remains no matter what stage of ripeness it is at, so you’ll need to ask an experienced local for advice before you dig in. The Antiguan Black is also less acidic than other pineapples, and the core tends to be more tender.

Coffee Culture has arrived in Antigua; what was once a niche market is now becoming the new standard.
START YOUR DAY RIGHT, WITH COFFEE & MORE
When it comes to the coffee scene in Antigua, few know it better than Naomi Millard, manager of Carib Bean Coffee. From sourcing and roasting beans, to supply them to vendors across the island, to serving the perfect cup, Naomi has her finger on the pulse of how Antiguans and visitors are embracing coffee today. We sat down with her, to find out more.
How would you describe coffee culture in Antigua?
“Here in the West Indies, people drink A LOT of Bush Tea, so coffee was never really a big ‘thing’ on the island. Over the past two years in particular, this has changed considerably. Having a coffee has become a daily ritual for a lot of people on island and they’re also using it as a way to socialize and connect with others too. I think the catalyst for this evolution probably started with the tourists. With local businesses meeting the demand of these visitors who were used to having a coffee shop on every street corner, with a wide range of specialty coffee options and more recently with a range of milk options too. It becomes expected, and maybe even essential for visitors to be able to get their caffeine fix just the way they like it wherever they are in the world! So this is why we’re seeing a lot of our resorts putting coffee shops inside their premises and also why the amount of coffee shops on the island has increased and their coffee offerings expanded. At Carib Bean Coffee we have actually assisted in the set-up of many new
coffee shops and each and every one of them is absolutely thriving. Coffee culture has well and truly arrived on island, but I do believe this is just the beginning of Antigua’s coffee journey and there’s more growth still to come, which is very exciting!”
For visitors wanting the ultimate coffee experience here, what should they not miss?
“They need to be visiting our roastery, in Horsford Hill, Liberta (near English Harbour). If you come during season, we’re pretty much roasting all day, every day so you’ll get to see the bean machine in action! We have a small café, so you can stay a while and enjoy coffee and cake and you can also purchase freshly roasted bags of coffee along with an assortment of other fabulous local artisan products that we stock, made by some incredibly talented independent local producers. I definitely recommend everyone stops by to let us ‘Put a little island in your cup!"
Alongside Carib Bean Coffee, here are a few other places we would recommend. They all do a little something extra too. Petals is famous for their breakfast rotis. At The Larder you can sling your espresso over some gelato from their incredible gelato bar if you fancy an affogato! At The Cork & Basket you will find an international food store with a well-stocked delicatessen and at Kaffeine they also serve iced tea, matcha, bubble tea, frappès, Cocktails and Mocktails.

ART WEEK
Be Immersed
Art Week was set up by The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Board to showcase local painters, sculptors, filmmakers, photographers, musicians, dancers, poets and more, who have creative offerings to share with the world.
More than 30 artists took part in the event last year, which was only the second of its kind. Some opened their studios to visitors, allowing them to experience the way they work and discuss their process, some displayed their work in already established exhibition spaces or new pop-up gallery spaces created specifically for this event.
A carefully curated art trail was also on offer which took participants on a journey through a variety of art spaces on Antigua. Visitors were also given the opportunity to get a little more hands on, with events encouraging people to create art work of their own, preferably while sipping wine and nibbling on something delicious.
Art Week is an annual event and is a time when Antigua & Barbuda becomes alive with colour and creativity as residents and visitors take full advantage of all the amazing events on offer while local businesses get involved and show their support. It is an exciting and inspiring time to be on island, so if you’re on island between November 26 and December 2, 2025 we would highly recommend you immerse yourself!
Whether you’re overworked, overwhelmed, or simply just exhausted by everyday life, a vacation in Antigua & Barbuda will get you back on track.
PARADISE IS GOOD FOR THE MIND, BODY & SOUL…
We already know that living by the sea is good for your health and that’s the beauty of living on a small island, the sea is never too far away. Sea water is rich in minerals that can have curative effects on the skin and as Antigua & Barbuda have so many different water-based activities you can take advantage of the crystal-clear waters, all day everyday if you so desire. If you don’t fancy dipping in the sea, simply breathing in the sea air encourages respiratory health, stimulates the immune system and ultimately makes you feel more energised, alert and happier.
The sunshine vitamin (vitamin D) is in abundance here in paradise too, so catching your expert recommended 10 minutes of sunshine a day to help lift your mood, is pretty easy! And once it is lifted and you decide you want to get active there is so much to do on the island you will be spoilt for choice. You can hike, cycle, play football, golf, there’s swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and kitesurfing or if you prefer an actual fitness class you can do that too at one of the many gyms across the island.
If you want to eat clean while you are here, that’s also no problem. Antiguan food is generally fresh and largely additive free, and exotic locally grown fruit and veg can be bought at roadside stalls across the country. Many bars and restaurants across the island, use local, seasonal ingredients in their menu and embrace the farm to table cooking ethos. The coconut water which is in abundance here is low in fat, helps to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure and is hydrating as well as being sweet and tasty. It also mixes perfectly with our local rums…

n CURTAIN BLUFF LUXURY DAY PASS
Spend the day just as you please, taking full advantage of Curtain Bluff,’s facilities. This 5-star boutique resort nestled on a rocky promontory on Antigua’s South side, is flanked by two spectacular beaches, each with their own personality. The water at Bay Beach is typically calm and clear, which makes it ideal for swimming. It’s also the best place for kayaking and sailing a Hobie Cat, as
you will have full use of the resort’s non-motorised water sports equipment. The waves are larger and more robust at Surf Beach, where you might settle into a hammock between palm trees while the sound of the surf lulls you to sleep. You will also have the opportunity to swim in the lap pool, stretch out on the beach and lie in the shade of a palapa.
Hiking in Antigua & Barbuda isn’t just about reaching a destination, it’s about slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and discovering the island from a new perspective. Whether you’re climbing to a historic fort, wandering through lush rainforest, or making your way to a secluded beach, every step brings benefits for both body and mind. The tropical air, sound of birdsong or waves lapping, and sweeping island vistas offer a natural reset, perfect for balancing adventure with relaxation.
TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
Mount Obama is a great one if you have the time and want to climb to the highest point in Antigua. There are a variety of routes up, so find the best starting point based on where you are. Some easy and quick trails that are all achievable in beach wear would be: Fort James from Fort James Beach just north of St John’s; Fort Berkeley from Nelson’s Dockyard and Fort Barrington from Deep Bay. These are all easy 5–15 minute walks with some steeper parts. If you are looking for something slightly more challenging, hiking to Fort George overlooking Falmouth Harbour could be for you. You can depart from Cobbs Cross just north of Falmouth Harbour. For a more scenic hike, head to Shirley Heights from Galleon beach taking in the Pillars of Hercules and the Mermaid Gardens Rock Pools along the way.
Rendezvous Bay Beach is a relatively long hike from Falmouth Harbour area and the trail starts just up from the Spring Hill Riding Club, from there the road becomes a track. It is easy to follow, but it can be rough underfoot so do wear appropriate shoes.
Some trails are well marked and easy to follow including most of the trails that lead up to the various forts scattered across the island, but some you’ll need a map for and others, we would recommend you use a guide.

Stay Hydrated: Bring more water than you think you’ll need, Caribbean sunshine is no joke!
Respect Nature: Stay on marked trails and take all rubbish away with you. Leave the island as beautiful as you found it.
Check Access: Some trails cross private land, ask a guide or local authority before you set out.
Go With Company: A guide or group keeps you safer and helps you discover the island’s hidden stories and history.
Fire Awareness: In the hotter summer months, fever grass areas can become highly flammable. Always exercise caution, and never light fires on or near trails

Even though we have our own home in Jolly Harbour, over the years we have treated ourselves to short stays in different hotels across the island, to explore some of the areas we were not so familiar with.
OUR FAVOURITE HOTELS IN ANTIGUA
Each hotel in this list of our favourites has a stunning location, with spectacular views and warm, welcoming, attentive service as standard, but they also each have their very own unique brand of charm.
n ADMIRAL’S INN & GUNPOWDER SUITES
Steeped in colonial charm, the Admiral’s Inn & Gunpowder Suites is a boutique hotel located in the historic Nelson’s Dockyard. The elegant rooms and suites provide a sense of timeless luxury set in the UNESCO world heritage site of Nelsons Dockyard. For those who love to explore the passage of time and stand where those before them once stood, there is no other hotel that comes close. Adjoining the inn via boat ride are the Gunpowder Suites with the converted gunpowder magazine occupying the dominant position on the bluff overlooking the pool and restaurant. The layout is perfect for a family day out and is a firm favourite with our children, while Nadia and I take in the serene views of Nelson’s Dockyard across the waterway swinging gently in one of the hammocks sipping a cocktail.
n JUMBY BAY ISLAND RESORT
Accessible only by boat, Jumby Bay Island is the epitome of exclusivity where opulence meets seclusion and serenity. It redefines luxury with its elegant suites and villas, each designed with a seamless blend of modern amenities and colonial charm. The privacy of the island is unmatched in Antigua, where pristine beaches beckon and the open park land gives a feeling of freedom and space away from the world.
n CARLISLE BAY
Carlisle Bay is a paradise for adventure seekers and will deliver a family holiday you will not soon forget. Located on the South Coast, it boasts a picturesque backdrop of emerald hills and a stunning view of turquoise seas. The beachfront suites provide direct access to the pristine sands, where water sport enthusiasts can indulge in everything from paddleboarding to sailing. After an active day, Nadia found solace at the excellent spa, where holistic treatments harmonized with the sounds of the ocean. The dining options, ranging from Asian-inspired dishes to Mediterranean delights, added a delightful culinary dimension to our stay.
n COCOBAY RESORT
Perched on a hillside, Cocobay Resort paints a colourful picture of Antiguan hospitality. The cheerful cottages, adorned in vibrant Caribbean hues, offer sweeping views of the azure waters below. What captivated us most about Cocobay is its all-inclusive experience, which included an array of water sports, from kayaking to snorkelling. And when it came to culinary delights, the resort's restaurants delivered an authentic taste of the island, with seafood dishes that left a lasting impression.
n SANDALS GRANDE ANTIGUA
Sandals Grande Antigua is a haven for couples seeking romance in the Caribbean. The resort offers a range of gourmet dining options, from sushi at Soy to Caribbean fusion at Eleanor's. Situated on Dickenson Bay Beach the hotel has a vast array of amenities perfect for couples seeking adventure above and below the waves as well as those seeking a truly relaxing allinclusive pampering.
n HERMITAGE BAY
Hidden away in a pristine cove, this 5star all-inclusive resort is a true ecofriendly haven. The twenty-five or so, spacious luxury cottages, crafted with sustainable materials, blend seamlessly into the surrounding lush gardens overlooking the beach below. What sets this gem apart is the private plunge pool that accompanies each cottage, inviting you to unwind in absolute serenity. Hermitage Bay's commitment to sustainability also extends to its cuisine. The on-site restaurant sources ingredients locally, ensuring a farmto-table dining experience that tantalizes the taste buds with authentic Caribbean flavours.
HOTELS
n BLUE WATERS RESORT & SPA
Situated on 17 acres of tropical gardens, Blue Waters Resort & Spa is a symphony of nature and luxury. The Cove Suites, in particular, left me totally in awe, with their spaciousness and the personalized services that ensured no desire went unmet. Beyond the opulent accommodation options, the resort's dining venues, from the cliffside Cove Restaurant to the casual Pelican Bar, showcased a diverse range of flavours. And finally, the sunsets at Blue Waters, casting a golden hue over the peaceful Caribbean waters, are nothing short of magical.
n CURTAIN BLUFF
Curtain Bluff's reputation as an all-inclusive paradise is well-deserved. Located on a bluff overlooking two stunning beaches, this resort offers a harmonious blend of relaxation and recreation. We enjoyed leisurely strolls along the surf in preference over the more energetic games of tennis on offer at the championship tennis centre. The rooms, designed with an emphasis on understated elegance, provide breath-taking ocean views. Dining at Curtain Bluff was a culinary journey, with each meal a showcase of locally sourced ingredients and international flavours.
n HODGES BAY RESORT & SPA
Recently refurbished with an eye toward modern design, Hodges Bay has some spectacular art adorning the reception, along with a giant space man sculpture out front. Along with its beach bar and restaurant at Prickly Pear Island, the hotel offers the ultimate in modern chic décor, alongside the charm and relaxed feel of the Caribbean. It is definitely one of the places to be, when visiting Antigua.
n ROYALTON
Newly renovated and the only hotel with over water accommodations reminiscent of those in the South Pacific, the Royalton is an all-inclusive resort with something for everyone. Situated in the corner of Deep Bay beach guests have one of the calmest West Coast beaches to saunter along and can enjoy snorkelling along the rocky edge of the bay with Fort Barrington towering above. For those brave enough, the wreck of the Andes is located approximately 500m from the shore and can be paddled to via kayak.
n TAMARIND HILLS
This luxury resort set right on the peaceful waterfront at Ffryes Beach, is the epitome of modern luxury, and tranquil privacy. All the villas and townhouses have a spacious terrace, fully equipped BBQ and private infinity edged pool and they all overlook the stunning white sand shores and turquoise waters beyond. From the moment you arrive, brilliantly attentive staff are ready and waiting to look after you well and The Beach Club and Wild Tamarind Restaurant are there to keep you extremely well fed and watered! We couldn’t recommend this magnificent place more.
n NONSUCH BAY RESORT
Nonsuch Bay Resort caters to sailors and water sport enthusiasts alike, situated on a protected bay ideal for sailing and kiteboarding on the East Coast of Antigua. The stylish suites, designed with contemporary flair, offer a comfortable retreat after active days out on the water. The resort's sailing school and charter options ensure that guests can fully embrace Antigua's nautical spirit. Not to mention the newly opened Asian fusion inspired, Rokuni restaurant and bar, and anyone who knows the Rocks Group in Antigua needs no further information than that, they are that good!

While the stunning all-inclusive hotels and resorts in Antigua present a variety of wonderful accommodation options, the appeal of renting a luxury villa is gaining traction among the discerning traveller.
THE ALLURING ADVANTAGES OF CHOOSING A LUXURY
VILLA RENTAL…
Ihave always enjoyed a luxury all-inclusive resort hotel. Everything is right there for you, the gorgeous facilities, helpful staff, and plenty of other guests to make friends with as you sip your rum punch by the communal pool. However, family vacations have evolved into a different animal altogether and now my primary quest is for comfort, flexibility, space and privacy.
Navigating holidays with two small children can be an intricate dance, especially around pools and communal areas of hotels, where I strive to maintain a balance between relaxation and supervising my children's volume levels. Opting for a villa rental means I am able to allow my kids to be their boisterous selves (within the parental tolerance threshold) but turn any potential public embarrassment into a private family moment instead.
A serene four-bedroom luxury villa on Antigua’s beautiful west coast, nestled in the tranquil Harbour View community. This stunning villa features a sun-soaked deck, large private pool, shaded verandah, and ample outdoor seating, plus a private driveway with lush gardens. It is the perfect blend of privacy, convenience, and Caribbean charm, conveniently located just minutes from Jolly Beach where a variety of restaurants, shops and the golf course can be found.
The flexibility of having your own kitchen in rental properties can also be more cost effective and enables self-catering at our own pace. Plus with private catering options still available and restaurants still accessible, we’re not reducing our culinary choices, simply expanding them.
Rental properties also awaken the inner explorer in me, urging me to venture out to local shops, discover unfamiliar territories steering away from the comfortable monotony of all-inclusive services and omnipresent hotel staff and soaking in the local milieu.
I love the way that rental properties can quickly morph into a comforting home away from home, and with the right rental company you are simply converging the conveniences of hotels: cleaning, catering, tour arrangements and concierge services with the added benefit of being cost effective, private and spacious.
