Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to your island home away from home, we invite you to immerse yourself in the unique charm that makes Antigua and Barbuda truly special.
Antigua and Barbuda’s rich cultural heritage is vibrant and alive, offering year-round excitement. Take the opportunity to visit the breathtaking Bird Sanctuary, relax on the pristine pink sands of Princess Diana Beach, explore the mystical allure of Barbuda’s caves, and experience the historic Martello Tower.
Together, Antigua and Barbuda offer endless experiences, from sun-kissed beaches to cultural treasures, waiting to be explored. Soak it all in and make unforgettable memories.
We are delighted to have you here!

LOCATION,
The Caribbean Archipelago is typically grouped
into three main categories:
1. The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos: Located in the northern Caribbean, these low-lying islands are known for their stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. They serve as a gateway to the Caribbean for many travelers from North America.
2. The Greater Antilles: This group includes the larger islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic), and Puerto Rico. These islands are characterized by their size, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.
3. The Lesser Antilles: This is where Antigua & Barbuda is situated. The Lesser Antilles are further divided into two groups:
The Leeward Islands: Including Antigua & Barbuda, these islands are known for their relatively calm waters and diverse landscapes.
The Windward Islands: Located in the southern part of the Lesser Antilles, these islands are more exposed to the Atlantic trade winds.
ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
ANTIGUA & BARBUDA IS STRATEGICALLY LOCATED AT 17 DEGREES NORTH OF THE EQUATOR AND 61.8 DEGREES WEST LONGITUDE. THIS PUTS US IN THE HEART OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, PART OF THE LESSER ANTILLES.
Antigua is the larger of our two main islands and spans approximately 108 square miles (280 square kilometers). Its terrain is varied, with our highest point, Mount Obama (formerly Boggy Peak), reaching 1,319 feet (402 meters). This elevation provides Antigua with a diverse ecosystem, from lowland areas to more mountainous regions.
Barbuda is located about 30 miles north of Antigua and presents a different geological profile. It’s a low-lying coral island, covering about 62 square miles (160 square kilometers). The highest point on Barbuda is only about 125 feet (38 meters), meaning it is not visible from Antigua’s shores, despite their proximity.
We’re situated about 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometers) Southeast of Miami and roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) North of Venezuela. This central position in the Eastern Caribbean makes Antigua & Barbuda an ideal base for exploring other neighbouring islands.
n To the Southwest, approximately 27 miles (43 kilometers) away, lies Montserrat. Known for its active Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s volcanic activity.
n Northwest of us, roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) away, you’ll find St. Kitts and Nevis. These islands are visible from Antigua’s West coast on clear days.
n To the South, about 47 miles (76 kilometers) away, is Guadeloupe, adding a touch of French culture to our diverse neighborhood.
You can also access destinations like St. Maarten, Dominica, or the British Virgin Islands, each offering its very own unique Caribbean experience.

ISLAND INSIGHTS
n The capital city, St. John’s, situated on Antigua’s West Coast, serves as the nation’s administrative and cultural hub.
n English is our official language, though you may also encounter the melodic cadence of Antiguan Creole in your daily interactions on the island.
n Antigua & Barbuda operates as a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with King Charles III as the head of state.
n Prime Minister Gaston Browne, leading the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party, currently heads the government. We proudly celebrate our independence from the United Kingdom each year on November 1st, a date marking our sovereign status since 1981.
n The economy in Antigua & Barbuda operates on a dual currency system of East Caribbean Dollars (EC$) and US Dollars (US$).
n As of 2024, our population stands at approximately 95,000, fostering a close-knit community atmosphere that extends a warm welcome to visitors.
n The magnificent Frigatebird, is our National bird and Barbuda hosts one of the world’s largest Frigatebird sanctuaries, home to over 5,000 of these majestic creatures.
n For your day-to-day needs, the Epicurean supermarkets in Jolly Harbour and St. John’s offer a wide range of products. Be prepared to bring your own bags, as plastic bags are not provided.
n The pharmacy in Jolly Harbour, is an absolute treasure trove, it stocks pretty much everything you need, and a load of stuff you might not have known you needed and also didn’t expect to find in a pharmacy. So if you need something and you’re not sure where to get it, try the pharmacy first!
n Healthcare facilities, including hospitals and after-hours emergency clinics are readily available. However, obtaining travel insurance before you visit is advisable.
n Our tropical maritime climate, moderated by northeast trade winds, ensures year-round temperatures between 27°C and 32°C, making Antigua & Barbuda an ideal destination regardless of the season.
n For visitors, our visa-free policy for short stays simplifies entry procedures.
n Betty’s Hope, an open-air museum featuring a working sugar mill, offers a glimpse into our agricultural past and the complex history of sugar production in the Caribbean.
These are just a few of the useful things we wish we had known when we first arrived in Antigua & Barbuda. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy everything Antigua & Barbuda has to offer, without any surprises.
USEFUL THINGS WE WISHED WE’D KNOWN
Money Matters: While both East Caribbean Dollars (EC$) and US Dollars (US$) are widely accepted, even if you pay in US$, you might receive change in EC$.
Many tourist-oriented businesses quote prices in US$, so always clarify which currency you’re being charged in to avoid any confusion. Some small businesses, shops, and petrol stations may not accept credit cards, so carrying cash is always a good idea. You cannot use contactless payments, Apple Pay or Google Pay. It is also not uncommon for retailers to require ID to go with your card payment even if you use a chip and pin so do not be offended if they ask.
Driving Tips: If you plan to drive while in Antigua & Barbuda, you’ll need to bring your home country’s driving license and purchase a temporary local license from a car rental company which is around US$10.
Driving is on the left side of the road, and while most roads are in fair condition, you should watch out for potholes, wandering livestock and slow-moving vehicles. It’s also worth noting that petrol stations can sometimes close unexpectedly, so keep an eye on your fuel gauge. Be prepared for some local driving quirks, such as cars stopping unexpectedly in the middle of the road in front of you just for the driver to stop and chat to a friend on the side of the road, if this happens, be patient and just pass when you can.
Local Transportation: Local buses are an affordable and authentic way to get around. The fare is generally EC$3, and buses operate on a fairly informal schedule, with locals being more than happy to guide you. Taxis are also readily available, and drivers often act as informal tour guides, offering insights into the best places to visit.
Sun Protection and Climate: Temperatures remain warm all year-round, but the sun can be particularly intense during the summer months. Protect yourself with a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen, and consider wearing a rash vest with long sleeves if you plan to spend extended time at the beach or out on the water.
Shopping and Essentials: The supermarkets do not provide plastic bags, so bring your own tote bags or you will have to purchase one in store. Also, alcohol sales are prohibited on Easter Sunday, so plan accordingly.
Beach Etiquette and Rentals: Amenities like sunbeds and beach umbrellas generally come with a rental fee. Typically, sunbeds cost around US$20 per day, and umbrellas US$10 per day, a small price to pay for a day of relaxation on one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines. But be prepared and make sure you bring cash.
Electrical Outlets: The electrical voltage in Antigua & Barbuda is usually 220V, so check the voltage requirements for your electronic devices and bring a transformer (not just an adapter) for any sensitive electronics.
Wildlife and Nature: Mosquitoes and red fire ants are common, so it’s wise to protect yourself, particularly at dawn and dusk, by wearing long sleeves and using insect repellent. If you’re allergic to insect bites, packing antihistamines is a good precaution.
Island Time: Finally, embrace the relaxed pace of island life. Things might move a little slower than you’re used to, but that’s part of the charm. Whether it’s waiting a few extra minutes for a meal or taking your time to explore a secluded beach, let the island’s rhythm guide you, and you’ll find yourself unwinding in no time.
FOUR TOP SPOTS
u ST JOHN’S
The capital of Antigua & Barbuda, this is where you’ll find a whole host of historical and cultural landmarks, including The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda which is well worth a visit. As well as the main exhibitions it is home to an extensive research library open to the public, where you will find a vast collection of archaeological artifacts, monographs (some unpublished), maps, and hundreds of photographs. If you are keen to take a little knowledge home with you, there are Antiguan history and archaeology books and framed maps to be found in the gift shop too.
There is also St John’s Cathedral which has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, making it one of the oldest religious structures in the Caribbean. Its distinctive baroque architecture, with its twin towers topped with cupolas make it an architectural gem and despite initial criticism to the contrary, it is now celebrated as one of the most impressive cathedrals in the West Indies. If you climb to the top of the two towers you will get the chance to enjoy panoramic views of the island and breathtaking vistas of Antigua’s landscape and coastline.
St John’s is also the place to go if you’re looking to shop. Heritage Quay is the place to go for duty-free shopping with a wide range of luxury items to be found in the boutiques there while Redcliffe Quay with its colourful and restored buildings is renowned for housing an array of smaller shops, which offer a mix of local art, crafts, jewellery and tourist souvenirs, perfect if you’re looking for something special to take home with you.
q JOLLY HARBOUR
A marina and resort village on the West Coast of Antigua, Jolly Harbour is the largest gated community on the island, containing both residential properties and holiday accommodation. It offers a range of amenities including the Epicurean supermarket – where you can grab some fried chicken or patty’s to take with you to the beach or on a boat trip. A large variety of waterfront restaurants including a couple of our favourites - Al Porto’s and Curry House. There are numerous shops, including Sysco pharmacy which is an Aladdin’s cave of not just medicines but souvenirs too, Budget Marine for all your nautical needs and Steph and Vlada’s Studio if you’re
looking for some pampering. There is also a swimming pool, a gym that offers cross fit classes, a golf course and as well as the full-service marina there is also a fuel station for both cars and boats. It is not however, just these practical conveniences that draw people to Jolly Harbour. Visitors will also find some of the most beautiful and most popular beaches on the island here, along with some fun and lively beach front bars.
u FALMOUTH HARBOUR
Located on the South Coast of Antigua, Falmouth Harbour is a haven for yachts and super-yachts from around the world. It is known for its vibrant nightlife and hosts numerous high-profile events like Antigua Sailing Week. The surrounding area offers a variety of waterfront dining options including Club Sushi and the new container village consisting of a variety of eateries with multiple outside dining areas creating a perfect spot to view the superyachts and play – “Guess how much that one cost?” – one of our favourite family games!
t ENGLISH HARBOUR
English Harbour, located next to Falmouth Harbour, is renowned for its rich maritime history and preservation of 18th-century naval buildings. Along with Falmouth Harbour it is a focal point during the annual Antigua Sailing Week, which attracts sailing enthusiasts from all over the globe. It is home to Nelson’s Dockyard, a restored Georgian naval dockyard and UNESCO World Heritage site, and also has access to Fort Berkeley. English Harbour attracts visitors seeking a mix of history, culture and recreation. If you fancy a visit, be sure to stop at Admirals Inn for some food or drink, and consider for a second as you sip your rum punch, that once upon a time Nelson himself probably drank rum in exactly the same spot…
Having spent more than 15 years living on this paradise island in the heart of the Caribbean we have come to love many of the beaches that cover the coastline on both Antigua and Barbuda and found that no matter the type of beach experience you’re after, you’ll find it.
BEACH FUN FOR EVERYONE
Whether it’s relaxation and solitude or fun and frolics in the sea, exploring underwater worlds or embracing invigorating water sports, chilling at a beach bar with friends or enjoying a gourmet meal in a picturesque setting, there is something for everyone.
Here is a list of the most captivating beaches you won’t want to miss. We have listed them by coastal regions and have located them out on the map, so you can find them. Antigua & Barbuda is famous for having an astounding 365 beaches stretched over it’s 95 mile coastline. That’s right, you could go to the beach every day for a year and never need to visit the same one twice.
WEST COAST
A Popular Paradise; With pristine beaches seamlessly leading one, into the next, creating an almost endless shoreline, the West Coast beckons sunset worshippers and water enthusiasts alike.
Darkwood Beach: The calm and gentle waters of Darkwood Beach make it perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The waters are clear, allowing for good visibility when exploring the underwater world where you will find a variety of marine life. There is also a vibrant beach bar and restaurant, if you fancy staying into the evening and enjoying one of the stunning sunsets. We often visit for a day out in the water with the kids for a bit of everything, snorkelling, sandcastles, swimming and tasty food.
Jolly Beach: This expansive stretch of powdery white sand, is popular with visitors as it boasts several beach bars and restaurants, and a lively atmosphere, but if you are seeking shade under the trees or a tranquil nook away from the crowd, don’t worry, the beach is almost a mile long, and you are sure to find a calm spot. The
beach is easily accessed through the Jolly Harbour community, which has a large number of shops and facilities which visitors can use including, supermarket, pharmacy, beach bars, restaurants, and jet ski rental. The powdery white sand and the shallow, clear waters make Jolly Beach ideal for long, leisurely walks and swimming. This is our local favourite, with its stunning sunsets making it the perfect afternoon outing and be sure to watch for the “green flash”!
Pearns Point: A sanctuary for those seeking seclusion. This peninsula flaunts seven pristine beaches, often deserted, giving you the luxury of feeling like you have found your very own personal haven.
Dickenson Bay Beach: White powder sand beaches, gentle turquoise waters and located just a few miles north of St. John’s, it is probably one of Antigua’s most famous and frequently visited beaches due to its vibrant atmosphere and plethora of amenities. Visitors can indulge in a variety of water sports or just spend time relaxing in the tranquil waters which are ideal for swimmers of all ages. We love the beach front dining here and the proximity of the numerous restaurants to the water, making it one of our favourite day time spots.

The beach is less crowded than some of the more popular spots, making it a perfect retreat for those looking to unwind in a peaceful environment. The surrounding palm trees and lush vegetation add to the tropical paradise feel, making Morris Bay beach a must go, for nature lovers and those who love the underwater world. This is one of our favourites for snorkelling, and once we’ve built up an appetite we love to satisfy our taste buds with a fresh fruit salad from the local stall or barbecued chicken from the roadside vendors.
Rendezvous Bay: This secluded gem, accessible via a hike or ATV, promises serenity and pristine waters once you get there. Its shaded areas are perfect for leisurely relaxation.
Pigeon Point Beach: A picturesque and popular beach located close to Falmouth Harbour. Galleon Beach: Located at the entrance to Nelson’s Dockyard this beach is known for being a favourite spot for sea turtles. If you’re lucky, you can spot these gentle creatures swimming in the crystal-clear waters or even nesting on the beach, especially during certain times of the year. For those brave enough to venture from the beach and over a few rocks; a short walk to the east end will lead you out to the Pillars of Hercules, where you’ll find opportunities for some deeper snorkelling. We often visit by boat but it is just as easy by car, and is a great day out for the family with very calm waters and a restaurant that has everything you might need for a day on the beach.
If you think you have found the best beach in your first days in Antigua & Barbuda, don’t stop visiting new ones, we have had many, many favourites over the years as they all have something slightly different to offer.

Jabberwock Beach: This is a hotspot for water sports enthusiasts, particularly kiteboarders and windsurfers. The consistent trade winds and shallow waters make it an ideal location for these activities. There are rental shops and schools in the area where beginners can learn and experienced riders can gear up.
Prickly Pear Island: A small uninhabited island offering a more secluded beach experience just off Antigua’s main turf. Accessed from the Hodges Bay Hotel, a trip to this remote island for lunch is a wonderful day out.
Great Bird Island: A favoured stop for island-hoppers, it enchants visitors with serene beaches, beginner-friendly snorkelling spots and of course the bird watching opportunities. Only accessible by boat, it is often easiest to find a tour that stops for lunch or get a private charter to take you.

GREEN ISLAND ANTIGUA
It is well known that Antigua has 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. It is also well known that they’re all pretty spectacular in their own ways. So, if you’re only staying for a week or two, how will you decide which ones to visit and which ones to save for your next trip?
MORE THAN A BEACH
We talked with our team at the Luxury Locations Group and some Antiguan Locals and asked them to share their favourite beaches, to help you decide which ones are definitely not to be missed!
Luxury Locations Group
I would say I have visited around 30 beaches, give or take. I love Darkwood as it has a little reef for snorkelling as you walk in, shallow and clear water and a great beach bar. The kids love Darkwood as they used to play on the inflatable water park every weekend so I have lots of great memories of fun times we’ve had there together as a family.
JERMAINE BOWEN

Darkwood is my favourite beach in Antigua. Driving to Darkwood, which is southwest of the island, provides serene views of the beautiful green and blue of my land. As a lover of long drives, driving to darkwood’s shimmering waters gives me unmatched tranquility that keeps me going back. A core memory at my favourite beach is attending the floating Waterpark. It’s an exciting and unique way to have a laugh with your friends when you inevitably accidently plunge into the water- which I did numerous times.
SAM DYSON
Luxury Locations Group
With a boat and an ATV you can visit significantly more beaches than with a car, so I would say I’ve visited around 60 or so. My favourite is Pinching Bay, it’s only really accessible by boat and we have had some wonderful family days on the beach there. Due to the reef it is only really possible to get one or two boats anchored at a time there so the 500m long beach often remains almost completely deserted. It has everything you could want, calm clear waters, great for snorkelling, small pools for paddling, hundreds of cairns stacked up at one end and a little shade for a beach BBQ. Although not my favourite beach as I have only spent a few afternoons there, Hermitage Bay beach holds a very special place in my heart; it is where I proposed to Nadia and where we spent our ten year wedding anniversary having a lovely romantic picnic to celebrate where it all started.
CARLY DAVIES

I would say I have visited around 20 beaches so far, but it’s hard to remember given most come with a serve of rum punch. Valley Church and Darkwood are my favourites, due to the gorgeous colour of the water and how clear it is. Also, from the water looking back at the beaches you get an amazing view of the tropical fauna. I have some very special memories of Darkwood and Jolly Beach where I have seen some stunning sunsets. One evening on Jolly beach the sky looked orange, purple and pink all at once, honestly it was incredible.

I have visited a significant number of Antigua & Barbuda’s 365 beaches, but I have not kept track of the exact number. Each beach has its own unique charm and beauty but my favourite is Dickenson Bay. I love the pristine white sand and the crystal clear waters and it also has a vibrant atmosphere with beach bars and restaurants, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings. One particularly special memory I have of Dickenson Bay is watching the breathtaking sunset while enjoying a delicious dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants with my family. The combination of the stunning colours in the sky, the sound of the waves, and the delicious food created a truly unforgettable experience.

Dickenson Bay is a very nice beach it’s lively, and there’s the floating bar which is very cool, there are also lots of different restaurants on that beach, and you can do horseback riding, and lots of water sports. I also really like Jolly Beach, that long stretch of very fine white sand that you can dip your fingers and toes in is just lovely. It’s also lively from time to time. Then Valley Church Beach is also a favourite, the water is very shallow, you can hang out with your spouse, under the trees if you want some shade, lay down and read a book, and enjoy the view of Jolly Beach across the way.
LA-DANA FFRENCH

Sadly, we never get to the beach because we’re always working, but when we do, we love going to Long Bay Beach the water is really nice and shallow. We would usually go down with friends, take a cooler and lime in the sea with drinks, maybe bring a BBQ and grill some food as the sun goes down.

My favourite beach to go to in Antigua is Long Bay Beach. As I live in town, I enjoy the drive over with my family, enjoying the scenery along the way. It has shallow crystal clear waters and the current pushes you back on shore, rather than pulling you out, which means its great for the kids. It’s also quite lively because there are hotels close by, so you get a lot of tourist interactions, which can be fun.

I have visited 12 of Antigua & Barbuda’s beaches and Pearns Point is my favourite. The water is always crystal clear, very calm and it is never crowded, so I just get a very tranquil and relaxing atmosphere every time I go. The family picnics that we have at Pearns Point, seeing family members I haven’t seen in a while, socialising, playing games and having a good time on the beach is a very special beach memory for me.
LONG BAY BEACH
PEARNS POINT
DICKENSON BAY
As long term residents of Antigua, we feel very passionately about ensuring that the paradise island we have the immense privilege to call home is respected and protected. These are a few of the initiatives that are helping Antigua & Barbuda stay one of the Caribbean’s most pristine destinations.
KEEPING OUR BEACHES PRISTINE
The beaches of Antigua and Barbuda are without doubt some of the cleanest you will ever have the pleasure of visiting. And this is no accident. This is the result of a concerted effort by The Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Tourism Board to ensure that both residents and visitors to this paradise island, respect their environment, and endeavour to leave it the way they found it... or better.
KEEP ANTIGUA NICE
The Adopt a Coastline Initiative is aimed at changing the attitudes and behaviour of local children through mentoring youth stewards to conserve and protect the marine and coastal assets in Antigua and Barbuda. It is a grassroots campaign that includes beach clean-ups, community action and education, and public awarenessraising.
So when you visit any of the beaches on the island please be sure to clean up after yourself and keep Antigua pristine for everyone to enjoy. And if you spot any rubbish that isn’t your own, maybe take that away with you too...
COOL IS CLEAN
In 2019 The Tourism Authority, unveiled a local marketing campaign called #CoolisClean which coincided with a global marketing campaign called #WhatCoolLooksLike. The efforts were inspired by wellness and environmental policy changes by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda led by the Ministry of Health, Wellness and The Environment. One of these policies was to prohibit the importation, distribution, sale and use of plastic shopping bags which targeted 5 types of plastics that accounted for 90% of the plastics released into the environment.
Antigua & Barbuda is now PLASTIC
SHOPPING BAG
FREE, so during your stay, any time you’re headed to the shops, make sure you bring a bag with you once you’ve purchased your groceries. Most of the shops will provide a paper bag or will provide a fibre bag which will last a few months. In many supermarkets you can buy one or the other but will have to pay for them so a good tote bag is a good thing to bring or purchase from a local vendor on island.
THIS IS TURTLE TERRITORY
In some areas of Antigua along the beaches where turtles are known to nest, you will notice red lights. The hatchlings have an instinctive response to light which leads them towards the sea. When artificial lights were previously put in on the beach fronts these hatchlings would get confused and stray. So the red lights have been put in to prevent baby turtles from going the wrong way.
Sea turtles lay their eggs in the beach sand, so if you’re on a beach that is well know for turtle activity, and you’re looking to dig a hole or a moat for your sandcastle make sure you don’t dig above the surf line in the dry sand, but rather do it in wet sand where there will not be any eggs.
PROTECT YOURSELF AND THE ENVIRONMENT
When choosing sunscreen for a trip to Antigua, it’s important to consider products that are reef-safe and environmentally friendly. Here are some of the best types of suncream that are known to be safer for the marine environment:
Mineral-based Sunscreens
Zinc Oxide: Offers broad-spectrum protection and is less likely to harm marine life.
Titanium Dioxide: Another mineral-based option that is reef-safe.
Reef-safe Sunscreens
Look for labels that explicitly state “reef-safe” or “reef-friendly.” These products are formulated without harmful chemicals.
Chemical-free Sunscreens
Avoid sunscreens with Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, and other chemicals known to harm coral reefs and marine life.
Biodegradable
Sunscreens
These sunscreens break down more easily in the environment, reducing their impact on marine ecosystems

CRAFTING YOUR CARIBBEAN REFUGE WITH ELMSBRIDGE
The last decade, in particular, has seen a constant stream of new residents from North America and Europe who are drawn to the island’s tranquility and increasingly disillusioned by economic instability, cultural issues, safety concerns or political divisiveness in their own countries. These discerning investors find in Antigua not only a physical escape but also a stable, welcoming environment to call home.
Despite the small population of around 100,000, Antigua is a hub to international air travel with a modern airport, boasts one of three International Baccalaureate schools in the Caribbean, and holds one of the lowest crimes rates of the region.
It is within this community that Brian & Kal Dobbin found home over 15 years ago and established Elmsbridge, and its sister company Citizens International, merging their expertise in high-end real estate with the benefits of Antigua’s citizenship by investment program.
Elmsbridge’s philosophy extends beyond merely constructing homes; it is about curating luxury living experiences within dynamic residential communities. The company prioritizes integration with the natural surroundings, ensuring privacy and creating wellbalanced spaces for families and friends to enjoy. Additionally, they offer comprehensive property management services for homeowners who are not in residence year-round, ensuring their properties are meticulously maintained and ready for their return.
The Beach Houses, a private community of ten beach homes on Antigua’s chic south coast. With homes starting at $1.8M, homeowners can relax by the water and are close enough to enjoy the excitement of the internationally renowned sailing mecca of English and Falmouth Harbours.
The process of crafting your retreat begins with selecting a community. Currently, their team offers a choice of two developments:
The Gardens, a collection of 36 lots and turn-key villas within an established, walkable golf community on the island’s west coast, with marina-front lots also available.
The Beach Houses, a private enclave of ten turn-key homes aside the international sailing hub of Falmouth Harbour on Antigua’s beloved south coast.
With over 60% of homes already sold and a new development due to be announced in 2025, the appeal of these communities is undeniable. “Our clientele includes vacation homeowners, relocating families, returning Antiguan professionals, and retirees. We take great pride in creating homes that provide a sense of retreat and comfort, allowing residents to fully enjoy the natural beauty of Antigua and Barbuda, while spending precious time with family and friends,” said Kal.
Brian noted, “Elmsbridge’s core service is creating an escape for clients. Our comprehensive process guiding you from design through to a completed, beautiful home is intended to be seamless. Clients begin by selecting their preferred villa design from several options, then work closely with our team to personalize the interiors to reflect the homeowners’ style, choosing from an array of finishes and furniture packages, all crafted to endure tropical climates.”
Moreover, both projects are eligible under the Antigua & Barbuda Citizenship by Investment Program, presenting a valuable opportunity for homeowners to gain citizenship with their purchase. This program not only offers enhanced global mobility and fiscal benefits but also adds an attractive layer of investment security and potential capital appreciation. Ultimately, it allows buyers to have a legal foothold in one of the Caribbean’s most tranquil locales and turn a retreat home into a permanent refuge.
Elmsbridge is more than a property developer; they are creators of thriving communities. Their developments attract a diverse international clientele, each contributing to a vibrant and supportive environment. Whether seeking a vacation home, a permanent residence, or an investment opportunity, Elmsbridge offers the gateway to crafting a sanctuary in the Caribbean.

Located approximately thirty miles north of Antigua, the island of Barbuda is much less developed than its big sister. The only settlement on the island is Codrington and its surrounding locales, it is approximately 62 square miles with a population of less than 2000 people, making it one of the most sparsely populated islands in the Caribbean. So for those seeking a peaceful, remote retreat, Barbuda is the perfect getaway.
WELCOME TO BARBUDA

One way to get to Barbuda is on the Barbuda Express. This is what we did on our day trip…
A WILDLIFE PARADISE, NATURAL WONDERS AND A WARM AND WELCOMING PEOPLE
The boat ride over takes around an hour and a half and the water was calm so our trip was pretty smooth. The first stop was the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home of one of the largest colonies of frigate birds in the world. Located on Codrington Lagoon, our guided tour, led by Kool Cat, who was very jovial and really informative, allowed us to observe these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. Quiet and respectful observation is key as you are taken out across the lagoon in a small boat, moving slowly and carefully through the water so that you can get as up-close and personal to the birds as you can without disturbing them. If you are lucky enough to go during mating season which is in autumn, you will also get to see the male birds proudly displaying their big red throats to impress and attract their mates.
The next stop were the caves at Two Foot Bay, which are well worth a visit particularly because inside Indian Cave you can see the only known Ancient Amerindian petroglyphs carved by Arawak Indians.
Darby’s Cave is not actually a true cave, but a verticalsided sinkhole formed by a solution below-ground that subsequently collapsed and it really is a magnificent sight to see. The sinkhole is approximately 70 ft deep and the hole is approximately 350 ft in diameter. On one side of it, an intermittent drip of water has created stalactites and stalagmites, and some of them are huge. In the center of the cave is its own interior ecosystem resembling a tropical rainforest. The flora and fauna includes palmetto palms, bats, birds and frogs, which is in stark contrast to the surrounding dry bush land.
On to Dark cave which has a narrow entrance leading to a vast cavern which contains a pool of water. Due to the Amerindian Artefacts found in the area it is thought that this cave was probably a source of water for the Amerindian. It is the habitat for a rare species of Amphipod, the blind eye shrimp, as well as several species of Bats.
n There is no shade during the Frigate bird sanctuary tour so make sure you wear sun cream and maybe bring hats too, for extra protection.
n Take water and snacks with you if you think you’ll want some, maybe in a wet bag, so that you can take it on the boat.
n If you do have a tendency to get sea sick, we would recommend you bring some sea sickness tablets with you just in case. The trip over to Barbuda is usually smooth, but can get rough.
Check out the Barbuda Express website for tour bookings www.barbudaexpress.com/tours.html
Or if you have your own way of getting over to Barbuda, you can find a list of taxis and local tour guides on the Barbudaful website that can meet you on arrival www.barbudaful.net/visiting/ taxis-tours
The caves go on for around a mile, and if you hike through and up to the top of the cliff you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the coast. The climb is not too difficult, but it can get a little steep so we would recommend wearing proper shoes, not flip flops.
After our cave adventure we went for lunch at Barbuda Hillside View Restaurant, a small rustic bar and grill nestled in the Two Foot Bay National Park. We booked and ordered our food in advance and then had some rum punches on arrival. The staff were really friendly, the food was great and it was the perfect interlude before we headed off to Princess Diana Beach to swim, snorkell, sunbathe and relax before we headed back to Antigua on the Barbuda Express.

The flight arrives and leaves from the small Codrington airport which is a short walk into the village. We would recommend you double check your reservation a few days before the date you fly, just in case there are any time changes or cancellations.
BY BOAT
There are charter companies based in Antigua who will take you on a private day trip from Antigua to Barbuda such as Barefoot Antigua who we previously travelled with. Then there is the Barbuda Express, the ferry which we took more recently, which runs to and from Jolly Harbour in the season for day tourists. www.barbudaexpress.com +1 (268) 764 2291. info@barbudaexpress.com

EXPLORING BARBUDA
Most hotels or rental companies in Antigua will have a concierge that will be able to organise a day trip to Barbuda for you or at least point you in the right direction of well respected vendors who will take care of everything for you. If you are doing it yourself, you can find a lot of helpful information on the Barbudaful website https://barbudaful.net particularly when it comes to local amenities, tour guides and taxis to pick you up from the airport or the ferry and show you the sights.
n CODRINGTON
The town of Codrington is the perfect place to sample local cuisine, interact with the extremely friendly residents and maybe even pick up some original artwork. Be aware that there are no shopping centres, or malls or even supermarkets on the island, but if you do need groceries or home supplies you will find small home stores or friendly markets that carry these items, even if they are limited.
n CODRINGTON HOUSE
Codrington House was the home of the Codrington family, which Barbuda’s sole town is named after. Known by the locals as Willy Bob or Highland House, it now houses a small museum showcasing the island’s history and culture. It is the starting point for Darby’s Cave and is also the highest point on the island so while you take in the history you can also take in one of the best views of the island’s stunning coastline.
n ARTSY YAADIE GALLERY
Stacie-Ann Shaw AKA Artsy Yaadie is a Jamaican architect and creative with a passion for the fine arts. p MARTELLO TOWER
This cylindrical stronghold, built in the 1800s was essentially stolen from the Corsicans who had been using this particular fortress design since the 15th century. It was the strength of the tower and the 360-degree capability which impressed the British most and these Martello towers were built all over the British and Irish coasts as well as in Canada, South Africa, and of course here in Barbuda. The British did however get the name wrong when they appropriated the design, and it should in fact be called Mortella Tower. It was used as a look-out tower, able to sight in-coming or wrecked ships and signal the information onward to the village of Codrington, several miles north.
Barbuda is not for tourists looking for nightlife or an abundance of tourist attractions; it’s for those who wish to get back to nature, to relax, unwind, admire the natural beauty and wildlife of this almost untouched island and meet the local people. We have told you about the Frigate Bird Sanctuary and the Caves, but here are a couple of other things you should check out when you visit.
Exploring a new place can feel a little daunting, but with so many guided tour experiences on offer here in Antigua, you can relieve the pressure by letting them take care of all the logistics, while you turn those feelings of intimidation into excitement.
LOOKING FOR ADVENTURE
There is no better way to explore the natural wonders of the islands of Antigua & Barbuda than with a local guide who will take you to all the right places and share their knowledge with you as you go.
Listed below are some of the tours available, and there are some QR codes at the bottom of our favourites, so you can watch our experiences and see exactly why we recommend them so highly.
n ANTIGUA RAINFOREST ZIPLINE TOUR
For the thrill seekers among you Antigua Rainforest Zipline Tour is an exhilarating adventure flying through the trees. You may feel a wave of apprehension (or if you’re like me, total fear) wash over you as you are getting yourself harnessed up and receiving the safety briefing, but that’s totally normal. Hard hatted and with our shorts strapped up higher than they were designed for, we made our way to the first zip line, it is thankfully short, to ease you in. However, it is worth noting that once you take that first step off the first platform there is no going back. All the platforms are only connected by the ziplines after that and each one is a gradual build of distance and height, the final line being around 300ft long and 150ft above the ground. If you do decide to do the tour make sure you do the extended one as it has the longest lines and is the most fun. Tel: (268) 562 6363. www.antiguarainforestzipline.com
Remove anything loose, take everything out of your pockets if they don’t zip up and don’t plan on holding anything as you need both hands to do the ziplines.
TOURS & EXCURSIONS
n STINGRAY CITY ANTIGUA
Stingray & Snorkel Tour
Stingray City is one of our favourite places to visit, especially when we have family or friends visiting us. It is an experience that our children love and our youngest son first got to experience the massive, 200lb southern stingrays at age five. The day is an exciting but ultimately relaxed one, after a ten minute boat trip, you stop at a floating jetty, and right upon disembarking you get your first glimpse of the rays. Wading into the shallow water for the first time is quite daunting, the stingrays are massive and they do not do much to avoid you but rather glide past your legs with their velvet soft skin. After a few minutes the terror subsides and gives way to wonder as you’re able to interact with these amazing animals, holding them and feeding them.
LAVISCOUNT ISLAND
You can combine your Stingray City adventure with many other tour activities, including a trip to Laviscount Island, which is what we did. Laviscount Island is a sanctuary for the Aldabra giant tortoise, the planet’s oldest living animal which can grow to over 600lbs and live to up 200years. It is a private island getaway and as well as the giant tortoises, there are also Iguanas, Parrots, Walking Trails, a large beach area, floating dock and Mangrove Snorkel, viewing and eating deck and an Ice Cream shop to enjoy while you are there. So, it is suitable for one hour tours, or even half or full day island breaks, if you fancy taking your time.
Do not forget to bring sunglasses on this tour. Our nine-year-old forgot his and requisitioned mine shortly after starting the tour, so it was dust and dry eyes, followed by squinting in the rain for me.
n 268 BUGGIES
If you prefer to enjoy exploring by land rather than sea, 268 Buggies will show you some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the island as you head off road and into the wild on their ATV tour.
We took our kids for an afternoon racing through dirt and farm tracks crisscrossing the island. The buggies were simple to control with only one gear and the 268 Buggies team head and tail the convoy so there were no chances of getting lost. The whole tour was around two and a half hours, which was plenty for this adrenaline surged driving experience and our two boys aged seven and nine, had an absolutely fantastic time. www.268buggies.com
There are freshwater showers, so bring a towel with you so you can rinse off after and change. Also, the tour sells photos so you don’t really need to take anything other than sun cream and sunglasses.
We had a really fun time at Laviscount Island, interacting and learning about these prehistoric animals. Petting and feeding the giant tortoises with carrots provided by the guides was great, but do watch your fingers, as they can bite. Sure they like carrots, but they will bite anything that you put near them, including feet, ankles, fingers and bottoms! So don’t stand in one place too long, Nadia’s flip flop fell victim to a ninja like tortoise which snuck up from behind.

n ADVENTURE ANTIGUA
This is one of the longest running tours in Antigua with a fantastic reputation for quality. Whether you pick The Eco Tour, The Xtreme Circumnav or their newest offering; Adventure Islands, you will not be disappointed by the amazing day trips Adventure Antigua have to offer. Started by Eli Fuller, a third generation Antiguan, these day trips are inspired by his own childhood adventures with his family and offer an alternative to the traditional booze cruises you will find on island. They are not “party boats”, so there is no blaring music or 10am rum punches, the crew are professional, knowledgeable and great with kids, and it is the perfect way to enjoy the island’s natural wonders from the water.
Our expert guide shared tales of the island’s history and ecology and the island’s flora and fauna as we skimmed over the calm waters. These tours offer a diverse range of experiences, from thrilling adventures to cultural explorations, allowing you to discover the beauty and richness of Antigua’s natural wonders in various ways. If you’re a cricket enthusiast visiting Antigua, you are in for a treat! Cricket is the National sport of Antigua & Barbuda, and they are fiercely passionate about it. When you visit Antigua you can expect to see cricket being played all over the island, on the beaches, village greens, and of course, in the stadiums.
THEY DON’T LIKE CRICKET… THEY LOVE IT
Sir Vivian Richards Stadium
Named after the legendary Antiguan cricketer Sir Vivian Richards, this modern stadium is the heart of cricket in Antigua. It was built for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup and continues to host international matches, including Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and T20s. If there is a match during your visit, attending a game at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is a must. The atmosphere is electric, especially when the West Indies team is playing. You can enjoy the game along with local fans who are passionate and knowledgeable about cricket. When there are no matches, the stadium occasionally offers guided tours, which include access to the field,
stands, and facilities. It’s a great way to learn more about the stadium’s history and significance.
Outside the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, you will find a statue of Sir Vivian Richards. It’s a popular spot for photos and a tribute to one of the greatest cricketers of all time. Inside the stadium, there is also a small museum dedicated to Sir Vivian Richards. It features memorabilia, including cricket gear, photographs, awards, and other items celebrating his illustrious career and contributions to the sport.
The Antigua Recreation Ground, located in St. John’s, is one of the oldest and most iconic cricket grounds in the Caribbean. Before the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was built, ARG was the main venue for international cricket in Antigua.
This ground has witnessed some of the greatest moments in cricket history. Sir Vivian Richards scored the fastest Test century (56 balls) against England here in 1986, and Brian Lara set the world record for the highest individual score in Test cricket (375 runs) against England in 1994.
Although international matches are no longer held here, the Antigua and Barbuda Government recently injected 500,000 EC$ into preparing the historic Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) to be used as a practice venue for the pending ICC T20 Cricket World Cup. So it is worth visiting if you get a chance, even if just to walk on the same field where cricket legends made history.
Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG)
Formerly known as the Stanford Cricket Ground, this venue is now owned by the West Indies Cricket Board and has been revitalized as a cricket academy and practice facility. It also hosts local and regional matches and practice sessions, so definitely check the schedule to see if there are any games or events happening during your visit.
Antigua & Barbuda has produced some cricket legends over the years. Though they may not be many, the quality more than makes up for the quantity. Affectionately termed The Four Knights, the extremely talented sports icons Sir Vivian Richards, Richie Richardson, Curtly Ambrose and Andy Roberts put Antigua and Barbuda on the world map for cricket.
All in all, Antigua’s rich cricketing history and culture make it a fantastic destination for cricket lovers. Whether you’re visiting iconic stadiums, experiencing local matches, or learning about cricket legends, Antigua offers a variety of experiences that celebrate the island’s deep connection to the sport.
SHIRLEY HEIGHTS
PANORAMIC VIEWS
Shirley Heights is famous for its spectacular panoramic views of the island and surrounding Caribbean Sea. Enjoying vistas of English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, and the island of Montserrat in the distance on a clear day.
SUNSETS
This is truly one of the best places in Antigua to watch the sun dip below the horizon, filling the sky with stunning hues of orange, pink, and purple.
HISTORY
Shirley Heights is home to the remains of a colonial-era fortification that dates back to the late 18th century. It was an important military post for the British Navy, protecting the island from potential invaders. The site includes several well-preserved ruins, such as the gun emplacements, barracks, and other military buildings. Walking through these historical remnants offers a glimpse into Antigua’s past and its strategic importance during the colonial period.
PARTIES
Shirley Heights is well known for its lively Sunday evening parties, also known as the Shirley Heights Lookout or Reggae Sundays. Locals and tourists gather together to enjoy live steel drum bands, reggae vibes, BBQ and rum punch. It’s an excellent opportunity to taste local flavors while enjoying great music and company.
Local artisans also often set up stalls at Shirley Heights, especially during these Sunday gatherings, where they sell handcrafted souvenirs, jewellery, and artwork which provides a great opportunity to purchase authentic Antiguan art and crafts.
HIKING
If you enjoy hiking there are trails that meander through the surrounding hills and forests and up to Shirley Heights. It’s of moderate difficulty, but there are plenty of spots to rest and take in the scenery or spot local wildlife along the way.
So whether you are a history enthusiast, nature lover, lover of scenic views or seeker of vibrant cultural experiences Shirley Heights will provide you with a memorable experience that captures the essence of Antigua’s charm. www.shirleyheightslookout.com
Visiting Shirley Heights in Antigua is a must for anyone exploring the island, as it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and vibrant local culture. Here are just a few of the reasons we think you should visit.
Local Soca Diva, Claudette ‘CP The Diva’ Peters is truly a force to behold! A dominant force in the Antigua and Barbuda music scene and a staple of the Antigua and Barbuda Annual Carnival Celebrations, we at Discover 365 thought it only fitting that we asked her for her insight into the Antigua music scene and get her top tips for anyone attending Carnival!
CP THE DIVA
Claudette dipped into her love for music from the tender age of nine. Her outstanding vocal ability and vivacious personality was refined during her tenure with Anglican Youth Choir as she rose swiftly through the ranks to a regular lead. Upon leaving school, CP plunged headlong into her professional singing career on the hotel circuit, serving as lead vocals for the Dread & the Baldhead, High Intensity, Da Bhann, and The TaxiK Band.
CP The Diva became a regional name in 2002 with a well-known timeless classic ‘Something’s Got A Hold on Me’ with Da Bhann. By 2005 Claudette Peters was a leading female vocalist in the Soca genre and she solidified this position with the release of ‘All I Know”. She has won many awards over the years as her career has gone from strength to strength. She has 10 Soca Monarch crowns to date, and her passion for the art form is boundless! She immerses herself in her music, and is passionate about inclusivity and inspiring young people to get involved in the many aspects of the music and culture of her glorious country of Antigua and Barbuda.
Who are your musical idols and is there someone who has been particularly inspiring along your musical journey?
I think it was around 2001 that I realised that I did not have a female Soca role model in Antigua, I wasn’t sure who that would even be. Then I was in the car, on my way to a gig and I was listening to the radio and Miss Alison Hinds was being interviewed. I hadn’t started to be a Soca Diva, yet, I didn’t even know how to entertain the idea of being that. I was listening to her and she was just just doing her thing, explaining who she is and what genres she could handle and they played a clip of her singing “Like A Bridge Over Troubled Water” and I thought wow, I could do that. Before I heard her, the closest to Soca I was performing was “Feeling Hot Hot Hot”, but after hearing her speak I started to research and find any clips I could, we didn’t have cable as we couldn’t afford it, so it was just ABS, so it was hard to find, but she was really a unique artist and I was desperate to know more.
As I got more involved with my band, and I started to find my true musical voice, I got the very great privilege of meeting her. We were performing at the same hotel
and I was brave enough to approach her and ask her about her career. Miss Alison Hinds has been, and continues to be my go to person, my mentor, my sister in the business, and having her still at my side is such a blessing.
Your new single, “It’s Carnival” is a collaboration with Kisha Kay and Nicole David – how did this collaboration come about?
Kisha has actually been a fan of mine for quite some years, I have her stored in my phone as “Kisha St Lucia Fan” and she’s still in my phone as that. She had been reaching out through social media even before she was performing internationally and we probably should have done a collaboration sooner, but you know, there’s no better time than the present. She was really pumped up about this track and really wanted me to be a part of it and I thought this was the perfect time to get involved.
Which venues and events do you love to perform in, in Antigua & Barbuda?
The Antigua Recreation Ground is one of the most historic venues which has held so many events in its grounds it’s really is a cultural mecca in Antigua and Barbuda and performing there is one of the highlights of my season. The Blue Jeans all inclusive pre-carnival fete day is also brilliant, I always love playing that. I would have been one of the first artists to perform there, and I still enjoy performing there today.
Are there some particular events you love to get involved in every year?
Aunty Claudette Kiddies Fete is the way I make my contribution to my community and culture, to advocate for steel pan and for children who are interested in getting involved with music even if they can’t afford it. We, myself as Aunty Claudette along with the Soca Army, make a significant contribution to that. Soca Army are a team of individuals; brothers, sisters, cousins and friends who have been together for fifteen years, entertaining each other, each and every day with stories and discussions about whats happening in our industry, but then when it comes to our Soca Monarch Production they are absolutely instrumental in its organisation.
What do you enjoy most about performing?
I really enjoy watching people in the crowd singing along with my songs, word for word, their energy and passion is electric and it spurs me on. The thought that would go through my head each and every time is that there are people out there, that might be going through a really tough time, but while they’re out there in front of me, singing along, with their hands up in the air, during those thirty, forty minutes of my performance I’m able to get them out of any funk they might be in, and just make them feel good. That is just awesome, and it makes me so proud and happy to be able to perform for them.
What live music do you go and see on the island?
When I’m not performing, I’m actually a bit of a home body. I think it’s because I do go out all the time to perform, and I use that as an opportunity to hang out at the events too so that’s when I feed that part of myself. That being said, there are times when I’ll go out and check out what is happening on an evening. I love listening to a mixture of reggae, soca, calypso. Kutting Edge band is one of my favourites and some of the members I came up with, so it’s always great to see them perform.
Do you have any favourite local artists?
I am a lover of melody, and once a soca artist is able to give me that, I will love that song forever. This year I am really, really in love with Drastic’s music, he’s a really talented writer and artist, and he puts a whole lot of melody into it but then really gives his all vocally too.
If you had to name one must see musical event that you would particularly encourage tourists to attend, what would it be?
I love Blue Jeans and Caribbean Dreamz. Blue Jeans events are always so well put together, the atmosphere
is great and the layout of the event is really beautiful. Their sister event Caribbean Dreamz is really a pleasure to perform in for me, but also to attend, so I would encourage tourists to definitely put that one in their calendar.
Can you tell us about Insane Carnival?
Insane carnival has been on quite a journey, from grass roots to popping colour, and I have been with them since inception. The growth has been tremendous, the team behind Insane Carnival have worked so hard to fulfil their dream of becoming one of the biggest Mas groups in Carnival and today they have achieved that. They have the most numbers of any Mas group on the island and being a part of their team has been awesome. They have my total respect and I say kudos to them!
What do you enjoy most about being part of Carnival?
When I think about the events I participate in during Carnival, it is work, but when it comes to Monday and Tuesday on the road, that is when you’ll see Claudette Peters, not “CP The Diva”, this is my love, I am for the road, I am going to be there, that is my baby, my climax for Carnival and it is an absolute must!
What part of Carnival would you recommend tourists do not miss?
When it’s Carnival baby, you do what the locals do, you hit the bars, you hit the events in the Antigua Recreation Ground and then you go straight into a Mas troupe and hit the road for Monday and Tuesday. The tourists who have experienced this already, will tell you it is the best time they have ever experienced on any island, and I can definitely vouch for that.
The Antigua & Barbuda Carnival is a vibrant celebration that holds significant cultural and historical importance for the island. Taking place over ten days at the end of July and into the first week of August, it is one of the most popular events in the Caribbean’s summer calendar, attracting both local and international visitors who flock to Antigua’s capital city of St. John’s, to perform, participate and spectate.
THE CARIBBEAN’S GREATEST SUMMER FESTIVAL!
Originating in 1834 as a commemoration of Antigua & Barbuda’s emancipation from slavery, this celebration has evolved over the decades. Today it offers a diverse range of activities and experiences including cultural shows, pageants,
music competitions and vibrant street parades. You can expect to hear infectious beats and see incredible dance performances throughout the celebration as the community comes together to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage in a festive and joyful way.
CARNIVAL FOR BEGINNERS
For those of you who are new to carnival or not entirely sure how involved you want to get, and would prefer to be a passive observer, then your best bet would be to watch The Parade of The Bands.
Typically the parade commences at approximately 2 o’clock and usually starts behind Mount St John’s Hospital on Queen Elizabeth Highway where there is a large open area for parking cars. From there you can walk down and find a spot (preferably in the shade) in front of Government House on the roadside. There is usually a small spectator stand there and the large open field in front of the Government buildings will give you some flexibility to move back, in case you find the booming reverberations too overwhelming. It is a great spot to enjoy the music and the spectacle in a relaxed environment away from too much hustle and bustle. You could bring a few drinks along, maybe even some folding chairs, and watch the entire procession as it commences and heads into the main capital of St John’s.
One advantage of this location is that due to the parking being just outside of the Carnival route, you would be able to leave at any point without obstruction as you will be heading away from the parade and the subsequent roads that have been cordoned off.
A variety of competitions including the Queen of Carnival Pageant, which always garners significant attention and attendance and the Party Monarch and Calypso Competitions which showcase the musical and lyrical talents of local artists.
KEY EVENTS YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS
n The opening parade is a stunning event where all the queen contestants, Makajumbies (stiltwalkers), and various troupes, cheerleaders, and majorettes, parade through the streets. This parade is free to attend and typically starts around 1pm in the afternoon.
n The Emancipation Celebration – highlighting the historical roots of this carnival.
n A variety of competitions including the Queen of Carnival Pageant, which always garners significant attention and attendance and the Party Monarch and Calypso Competitions which showcase the musical and lyrical talents of local artists.
n There are live music concerts, which in the past have included appearances from our very own soca diva Claudette Peters.
n The Panorama is a steel band competition, a great event for the whole family to watch. The steel pan is an integral part of Caribbean music, and these talented musicians get the chance to showcase their skills on this iconic instrument.
n T-Shirt Mas is a pre-carnival event that involves participants getting tickets for a particular band they want to party with, then following the float carrying said band, enjoying music, drinks, and food along the way. It’s a fun and relaxed way to kick off the carnival spirit in the week leading up to the main festivities. When you buy a ticket, they will give you the promotional materials for the band you’re following. A media pack including cup, wrist band, glasses, flag, t-shirt, body tattoo.
n Jouvert takes place from 2.00am and goes through to 10am. Participants gather at their respective mas camps and then hit the streets to dance with their troupes. Water, powder, and paint are very often part of the revelry. It’s a wild, carefree, spirited atmosphere, and a truly memorable experience for adults, but definitely not suitable for kids.
n The Parade of The Bands is the pinnacle of the Antigua Carnival. St. John’s is transformed into a spectacle of vibrant costumes, frenetic dancing, and beautifully decorated floats. Participants and spectators alike come adorned in elaborate and colorful costumes, creating a stunning visual display. It takes place on the penultimate day of the carnival and if you want to really immerse yourself in the festival, you can get involved by joining one of these costumed carnival bands. This is called ‘playing mas’.
PLANNING TIPS
n The Recreation Ground (Antigua & Barbuda’s National Stadium) is where most of the stage events take place. Go to the Carnival website to purchase tickets.
n Details of the parade routes can be found on the Carnival website or The Tourism Board website closer to the date of the event.
n Check the website for the musical acts and be aware that the price for each show is around EC$100–150 or for VIP EC$300-500 each show.
n Carnival is a very popular time to visit Antigua, so if you are planning on attending, we do recommend you sort out your flights and accommodation well in advance, to avoid disappointment.
n If you want to ‘Play Mas’, you must register and pay a fee/purchase a costume with one of the authorized Antigua Carnival Mas Band’s listed on their website. Costumes cost approximately EC$2500–3000.
n T-shirt Mas and Jouvert tickets are each approximately EC$300.
n We recommend you get a taxi in, or park outside of town. The High Street is a good place to stand for a good view, but you will need to get there early. Parades usually start around 2pm.
n Traditional Caribbean cuisine and refreshing beverages are readily available, so you can sample delicious local dishes and enjoy tropical drinks while soaking in the carnival atmosphere.
n All in all you should expect a unique and unforgettable experience immersed in the vibrant colors, infectious music, and strong sense of cultural pride that pulses through the streets when Carnival descends. Every year at Carnival is different, so do check the official website for the most up-to-date information on specific venues and event details, if you do plan to attend.

Most of our favourite restaurants are in stunning locations and offer outside dining – on the waterfront, poolside, beach front or in your very own private cabana. So it is not just about the food, but the whole experience.
We have curated three lists: Beach side dining where you can move seamlessly from your dining table to dip in the sea. Restaurant dining with a whole range of culinary diversity and then local eateries that will give you a real taste of the Caribbean. Our lists do not encompass all the choices available to you on island, but it is a very good place to start!
They also do sushi at their airport branch and it is excellent, so make the time, you won’t be sorry.

Dining here feels like a romantic journey to the heart of France, set against Antigua’s natural beauty. It is one of our favourite spots to visit and even though it is possibly Antigua’s most upmarket beach bar and restaurant, Catherine’s Café still has a wonderful laid back, casual vibe. It is the perfect spot to enjoy leisurely lunches to the sound of live music and the gentle waves. So we recommend you let the corks pop and the hours drift lazily by as you relax on oversized beach chairs after sampling their delicious delights. https://catherines-cafe.com

The Goat Curry is an absolute must-try, as is the Rum Punch, which is really refreshing with just the right kick, perfect for a day at the beach.
As soon as we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the fantastic staff who love working here. We even met their adorable cat! It’s clear this place has a great vibe and a welcoming atmosphere and the view here is absolutely breathtaking, one of the best in Antigua. We had the pleasure of trying two popular dishes: the pan-fried red snapper with creole sauce and the famous goat curry. Both were absolutely delicious. The goat curry, in particular, stood out with its tender meat and rich flavours.

n JULIA’S ON THE BEACH Turner’s Beach
n KAIKOCONUT
Valley Church Beach
The kids (and adults) absolutely LOVE jumping off the top deck and using the slides.
This floating bar and restaurant moored at Valley Church Beach, is putting the F into fun. Even the little boat you have to take over to the big boat feels like an adventure and the kids love it. With a trampoline, three waterslides, and an inflatable ‘blob’ plus a fullystocked bar and kitchenette serving finger foods straight from the barbecue it really is an experience you have to try when in Antigua. There is a cover charge but they often have free boarding days, so keep an eye on their socials for those.
www.kaikoconut.com
Formerly the “Rum Bus” due to the double decker busses that form part of the entrance and food prep area, Julia’s serves everything from Tacos to burgers to Sushi on a Thursday, so make sure you check their website and see what’s on offer on the day you want to visit. The restaurant and bar seating wrap around a “boat pool”, which is a dream come true for younger children who seem to love the concept of the water being in the boat rather than outside. There is an abundance of shade and sun loungers so it’s good for both escaping or embracing the sun.
n LOOSE CANNON
Galleon Beach
Being just a few yards from the water this restaurant is a great place for those with younger family members who would rather splash in the sea while the grown-ups sit in the restaurant and chat over drinks. It is a great little haven from the heat of the day, as the restaurant and bar have full cover and the food and the cocktails particularly are exceptional! They also offer great brunches, music on the weekends and special day prices so be sure to keep an eye on their socials to get the most out of your dining experience.

qCONCH
A marine mollusk that is often grilled, stewed, or added to soups. If you want to try something new conch might be for you. Available at various roadside stops and local restaurants in Antigua you can try conch chowder, conch fritters, conch salad, and even conch curries. Conch fritters are the most popular, a great snack, or side dish, deep fried to perfection.
ANTIGUA BLACK PINEAPPLE
Pineapple is a favorite for many people around the world, but not many have experienced the black pineapple of Antigua. This fruit is native to Antigua and is consumed fresh or used in various dishes and drinks. The shortened name for this version of the fruit is the Antiguan Black, and it is known as the sweetest pineapple in the world. It can be tough to tell when this fruit is ripe, as the green tint remains no matter what stage of ripeness it is at, so you’ll need to ask an experienced local for advice before you dig in. The Antiguan Black is also less acidic than other pineapples, and the core tends to be more tender.
GOAT WATER
A spiced goat meat stew, sometimes with dumplings, yams, or potatoes added in, Goat Water is considered a delicacy and extremely popular throughout the Caribbean. Goat water is usually eaten around breakfast time and can be found in some local restaurants. If you do go for it, just keep in mind, this dish is very filling... it is also considered an aphrodisiac.
TAMARIND BALL
Very few can resist the sweet and sour allure of tamarind balls. A sweet and tangy snack made from tamarind pulp, sugar, and sometimes chili pepper for a bit of heat these are said to have originated from Jamaica, and they are incredibly popular today.
BBQ CHICKEN AND RICE
Less of a traditional dish but one that is most likely to be encountered on the roadside, slow BBQed chicken quarter served with rice and beans.
SEASONED RICE
Rice cooked with small pieces of meat or fish (bacon or saltfish), vegetables, and spices.
qROTI
A type of Indian flatbread, typically filled with curried meat or vegetables, reflecting the Indian influence on the local cuisine. If you can’t decide what to eat while on the go in Antigua, just know that you can’t go wrong with roti. This dish which is basically a wrap filled with chicken, beef, pork, seafood or vegetables is popular all around the Caribbean, and in Antigua you can add curried sauce to your roti. Roti can either be a side to a full meal, a snack, or even a whole meal depending on how big it is, and whether sides like fresh salad are included.
BEVERAGES
CAVALIER RUM PUNCH
The Caribbean and rum punch go hand in hand, and Antigua is one of the islands where a well-made rum punch may very well become your best friend. You can find rum punch at most restaurants and bars, which isn’t surprising since it’s so easy to make. All you’ll need is some local rum, usually Cavalier, pineapple juice, lime juice and cane sugar. Sometimes nutmeg and other ingredients are added in to spice things up.
WADADLI BEER
A local beer brewed in Antigua, said to have been the name given to Antigua by the first settlers to the island, though some historians dispute that. Nevertheless, Antigua’s most popular beer goes by that name, and its sweet, light flavor will likely win you over, particularly on a hot day by the beach!
SEA MOSS DRINK
A sweet and nutritious drink made from sea moss (a type of seaweed), milk, spices, and sweeteners.

ART WEEK
Creative Island Takeover
Art Week was set up by The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Board to showcase local painters, sculptors, filmmakers, photographers, musicians, dancers, poets and more, who have creative offerings to share with the world.
More than 30 artists took part in the event last year, which was the first of its kind. Some opened their studios to visitors, allowing them to experience the way they work and discuss their process, some displayed their work in already established exhibition spaces or new pop-up gallery spaces created specifically for this event.
A carefully curated art trail was also on offer which took participants on a journey through a variety of art spaces on Antigua. Visitors were also given the opportunity to get a little more hands on, with events encouraging people to create art work of their own, preferably while sipping wine and nibbling on something delicious.
Art Week is now an annual event and is a time when Antigua & Barbuda becomes alive with colour and creativity as residents and visitors take full advantage of all the amazing events on offer while local businesses get involved and show their support. It is an exciting and inspiring time to be on island, so if you’re on island between November 27 and December 3, 2024 we would highly recommend you get involved.
Whether you’re overworked, overwhelmed, or simply just exhausted by everyday life, a vacation in Antigua & Barbuda will get you back on track.
ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
IS GOOD FOR THE MIND, BODY & SOUL
We already know that living by the sea is good for your health and that’s the beauty of living on a small island, the sea is never too far away. Sea water is rich in minerals that can have curative effects on the skin and as Antigua & Barbuda have so many different water-based activities you can take advantage of the crystal-clear waters, all day everyday if you so desire. If you don’t fancy dipping in the sea, simply breathing in the sea air encourages respiratory health, stimulates the immune system and ultimately makes you feel more energised, alert and happier.
The sunshine vitamin (vitamin D) is in abundance here in paradise too, so catching your expert recommended 10 minutes of sunshine a day to help lift your mood, is pretty easy! And once it is lifted and you decide you want to get active there is so much to do on the island you will be spoilt for choice. You can hike, cycle, play football, golf, there’s swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and kitesurfing or if you prefer an actual fitness class you can do that too at one of the many gyms across the island.
If you want to eat clean while you are here, that’s also no problem. Antiguan food is generally fresh and largely additive free, and exotic locally grown fruit and veg can be bought at roadside stalls across the country. Many bars and restaurants across the island, use local, seasonal ingredients in their menu and embrace the farm to table cooking ethos. The coconut water which is in abundance here is low in fat, helps to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure and is hydrating as well as being sweet and tasty. It also mixes perfectly with our local rums.

n CURTAIN BLUFF LUXURY DAY PASS
Spend the day just as you please, taking full advantage of Curtain Bluff’s facilities. This 5-star boutique resort nestled on a rocky promontory on Antigua’s South side, is flanked by two spectacular beaches, each with their own personality. The water at Bay Beach is typically calm and clear, which makes it ideal for swimming. It’s also the best place for kayaking and sailing a Hobie Cat, as
you will have full use of the resort’s non-motorised water sports equipment. The waves are larger and more robust at Surf Beach, where you might settle into a hammock between palm trees while the sound of the surf lulls you to sleep. You will also have the opportunity to swim in the lap pool, stretch out on the beach and lie in the shade of a palapa.
Antigua & Barbuda has a lot of great hiking trails. Some are well marked and easy to follow including most of the trails that lead up to the various forts scattered across the island.
TAKE A HIKE
Mount Obama is a great one if you have the time and want to climb to the highest point in Antigua. There are a variety of routes up, so find the best starting point based on where you are. Just north of Morris Bay is one start point, past the black pineapple fields and follow the road, it is paved to the top so it is easy going but is around 3km long. Alternatively you can set off from Christian Valley near Ebineezer, this trail is shorter but wilder, so do not wear flip flops!
The Forts: Fort James from Fort James Beach just north of St John’s, Fort Berkeley from Nelson’s Dockyard and Fort Barrington from Deep Bay, these are all easy 5–15 minute walks with some steeper parts but all achievable in beach wear. All three of these forts have the remnants of their gunpowder magazines, hence the 18inch walls on some of the buildings to the landward side.
If you are looking for something slightly more challenging, hiking to Fort George overlooking Falmouth Harbour could be for you. You can depart from Cobbs Cross just north of Falmouth Harbour. For a more scenic hike, head to Shirley Heights from Galleon beach taking in the Pillars of Hercules and the Mermaid Gardens Rock Pools along the way. Shirley Heights has spectacular panoramic views over the South Coast hence its military significance in protecting English Harbour. For those who are less energetic, but still fancy enjoying the view, Shirley Heights is also accessible by car.
Rendezvous Bay Beach is a relatively long hike from Falmouth Harbour area and the trail starts just up from the Spring Hill Riding Club, from there the road becomes a track. It is easy to follow, but it can be rough underfoot so wear appropriate shoes and pack for swimming at the beautiful beach, do make sure you bring a drink also as there is nothing to quench your thirst along the way.
Many of the smaller paths in the countryside are not footpaths but rather goat paths and may not lead to anywhere other than some different grazing areas.
If you don’t want to go it alone and would prefer a guided walking tour then why not get in touch with Happy Heights or Trek Tours and let one of their entertaining and knowledgeable tour guides take you around some of Antigua’s different hiking trails.
n HAPPY HEIGHTS
Happy Heights believes that the paradise island of Antigua is more than just a beach and they want to take you around the island by foot and excite all of your senses. They invite you to embrace the beautiful views, listen to the sounds of nature all around you and take a moment to observe the birds and other animals you encountered, pick fruits, enjoy cactus cherries and more. www.antiguahiking.com
n TREK TOURS
Trek Tours wants you to experience Antigua’s incredible scenery in an active manner! You don’t need to be an athlete, you just need to be ready, willing and able to move away from the tourist attractions and venture off the beaten path as they help you to discover the true beauty of the island. They offer trails that challenge you a bot, but reward you a lot more.

Antigua & Barbuda has earned the title of “The Caribbean’s Most Romantic Destination” four consecutive times by the World Travel Awards. And there’s no wonder when every
corner of this paradise island with its white sand beaches, secluded landscapes and sun kissed skies, hums with the promise of dreamlike weddings and unforgettable honeymoons.
DESTINATION WEDDING
With no waiting period or residency prerequisites for the issuance of a wedding license, and a plethora of seasoned wedding planners at your fingertips, orchestrating your nuptials can be as serene and harmonious as the waves caressing the shores.
Taneisha S. Richardson, the owner and lead planner and designer of Unique Events by TSR, made history this year when she became the first wedding/event planner from Antigua & Barbuda to win at the 2024 WPIC Wedding Awards. The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada (WPIC) honored Taneisha with the prestigious “Best Wedding Under $50,000” award. An incredible achievement which serves as a testament to her flawless expertise, talent and dedication to her craft.
Discover 365 talked to Taneisha about her experience planning weddings in Antigua & Barbuda, to give us some of her own personal insights and to show you all just how easy it can be to achieve your dream wedding on our paradise island.
How did you get into wedding planning, and is it something you’ve always wanted to do?
In 2015, I planned my own wedding and that is when I discovered I had a passion for wedding and event planning. This discovery led to the birth of Unique Events by TSR. Actually, I did not foresee that this would be a career path having studied a completely different subject area in college and university. Now, I can’t picture a life where I am not planning weddings and events.
How long have you been working in wedding planning on the island?
I started Unique Events by TSR in 2016, so I have been planning weddings and events for the past 8 years. In 2019, I completed certification courses with the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada (WPIC) and earned the qualification as a Certified Wedding Coordinator and a Certified Wedding & Event Designer.
What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy helping each couple to tell their love story in the most unique way. A wedding should be a reflection of who the couple are and the love they share. I like the excitement that each wedding brings and I also enjoy getting lost in all the details for each event.
I love seeing an event space being transformed from vision to reality. Seeing the joy and happiness on my clients’ faces as they see their vision come to life and seeing them fully enjoying their celebration as they create memories with their family and friends is what motivates me.
Why would you recommend Antigua & Barbuda as a wedding destination?
A wedding in Antigua & Barbuda is truly a destination wedding experience like no other. There is no denying the beauty of our island and the experience it offers when it comes to weddings. Our island’s rich history, beautiful white sandy beaches, spectacular sunset views, outdoor and boating adventures, sumptuous island cuisine, and sweet island music offers a magical experience for a dream destination wedding.
“Some of the best beach venues in Antigua are Valley Church Beach, Hawksbill Beach, Carlisle Bay and Ffryes Beach.”
Do you have a favourite wedding that you’ve organised or one that you particularly enjoyed working on?
I enjoyed working on all the weddings I have planned over the years and I am grateful to all the couple who have trusted me with their vision to plan their special day. However, if I have to single out one that was enjoyable, memorable and life changing it would have to be the wedding I planned in November 2023 that led to me winning a prestigious award in Canada with the WPIC for “Best Wedding under $50,000 Canadian Dollars” and creating history for Antigua & Barbuda as the first wedding planner from Antigua to achieve this. The wedding theme was Tropical Elegance meets Boho Chic and held at Carlisle Bay Resort for a local couple.
Can you talk a bit about the range of venues on offer on the island?
In my opinion, the best venue to have a wedding in Antigua & Barbuda is one of our beautiful beaches. With the crystal, clear waters of the Caribbean Sea as a backdrop, with the cool, tropical breeze and warm sunshine, it is the perfect setting for a wedding in paradise. Antigua & Barbuda boasts 365 of some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean so finding a suitable one that provides that beach front ambience is not difficult. A beach venue is an empty canvas that can be transformed into any design desired by the couple.
For couples who may desire something different than a beachfront wedding, then the hilltop view from Interpretation Centre at Dow’s Hill or the royal elegance of the historic Clarence House or the lush greenery and tropical palms at South Coast Horizons offers a truly magical experience. For couples who are looking for all inclusive resorts, then Carlisle Bay Resort, Tamarind Hills Resort and Hodges Bay Resort are excellent options to host their celebration.

As seasoned travellers with a penchant for the finer things in life, Nadia and I have had the privilege of exploring some of the most luxurious accommodations Antigua has to offer.
OUR FAVOURITE HOTELS IN ANTIGUA
Even though we have our own home in Jolly Harbour, over the years we have treated ourselves to short stays in different hotels across the island, to explore some of the areas we were not so familiar with. Each hotel in this list of our favourites has a stunning location, with spectacular views and warm, welcoming, attentive service as standard, but they also each have their very own unique brand of charm.
n HERMITAGE BAY
Hidden away in a pristine cove, this 5star all-inclusive resort is a true eco-friendly haven. The twenty-five or so, spacious luxury cottages, crafted with sustainable materials, blend seamlessly into the surrounding lush gardens overlooking the beach below. What sets this gem apart is the private plunge pool that accompanies each cottage, inviting you to unwind in absolute serenity. Hermitage Bay’s commitment to sustainability also extends to its cuisine. The on-site restaurant sources ingredients locally, ensuring a farm-to-table dining experience that tantalizes the taste buds with authentic Caribbean flavours.
n JUMBY BAY ISLAND
Accessible only by boat, Jumby Bay Island is the epitome of exclusivity where opulence meets seclusion and serenity. It redefines luxury with its elegant suites and villas, each designed with a seamless blend of modern amenities and colonial charm. The privacy of the island is unmatched in Antigua, where pristine beaches beckon and the open park land gives a feeling of freedom and space away from the world.
COCOBAY RESORT
Perched on a hillside, Cocobay Resort paints a colourful picture of Antiguan hospitality. The cheerful cottages, adorned in vibrant Caribbean hues, offer sweeping views of the azure waters below. What captivated us most about Cocobay is its all-inclusive experience, which included an array of water sports, from kayaking to snorkelling.
And when it came to culinary delights, the resort’s restaurants delivered an authentic taste of the island, with seafood dishes that left a lasting impression.
n SANDALS GRANDE ANTIGUA
Sandals Grande Antigua is a haven for couples seeking romance in the Caribbean. The resort offers a range of gourmet dining options, from sushi at Soy to Caribbean fusion at Eleanor’s. Situated on Dickenson Bay Beach the hotel has a vast array of amenities perfect for couples seeking adventure above and below the waves as well as those seeking a truly relaxing all-inclusive pampering.
n CARLISLE BAY
Carlisle Bay is a paradise for adventure seekers and will deliver a family holiday you will not soon forget. Located on the South Coast, it boasts a picturesque backdrop of emerald hills and a stunning view of turquoise seas. The beachfront suites provide direct access to the pristine sands, where water sport enthusiasts can indulge in everything from paddleboarding to sailing. After an active day, Nadia found solace at the excellent spa, where holistic treatments harmonized with the sounds of the ocean. The dining options, ranging from Asian-inspired dishes to Mediterranean delights, added a delightful culinary dimension to our stay.
n CURTAIN BLUFF
Curtain Bluff’s reputation as an all-inclusive paradise is well-deserved. Located on a bluff overlooking two stunning beaches, this resort offers a harmonious blend of relaxation and recreation. We enjoyed leisurely strolls along the surf in preference over the more energetic games of tennis on offer at the championship tennis centre. The rooms, designed with an emphasis on understated elegance, provide breath-taking ocean views. Dining at Curtain Bluff was a culinary journey, with each meal a showcase of locally sourced ingredients and international flavours.
n HODGES BAY RESORT & SPA
Recently refurbished with an eye toward modern design, Hodges Bay Resort & Spa has some spectacular art adorning the reception, along with a giant space man sculpture out front. Along with its beach bar and restaurant at Prickly Pear Island, the hotel offers the ultimate in modern chic décor, alongside the charm and relaxed feel of the Caribbean. It is definitely one of the places to be, when visiting Antigua.

The Escape at Nonsuch Bay caters to sailors and water sport enthusiasts alike, situated on a protected bay ideal for sailing and kiteboarding on the East Coast of Antigua. The stylish suites, designed with contemporary flair, offer a comfortable retreat after active days out on the water. The resort’s sailing school and charter options ensure that guests can fully embrace Antigua’s nautical spirit. Not to mention the newly opened Asian fusion inspired, Rokuni restaurant and bar, and anyone who knows the Rocks Group in Antigua needs no further information than that, they are that good!
n ROYALTON ANTIGUA
Newly renovated and the only hotel with over water accommodations reminiscent of those in the South Pacific, Royalton Antigua is an all-inclusive resort with something for everyone. Situated in the corner of Deep Bay beach guests have one of the calmest West Coast beaches to saunter along and can enjoy snorkelling along the rocky edge of the bay with Fort Barrington towering above. For those brave enough, the wreck of the Andes is located approximately 500m from the shore and can be paddled to via kayak.
n BLUE WATERS RESORT & SPA
Situated on 17 acres of tropical gardens, Blue Waters Resort & Spa is a symphony of nature and luxury. The Cove Suites, in particular, left me totally in awe, with their spaciousness and the personalized services that ensured no desire went unmet. Beyond the opulent accommodation options, the resort’s dining venues, from the cliffside Cove Restaurant to the casual Pelican Bar, showcased a diverse range of flavours. And finally, the sunsets at Blue Waters, casting a golden hue over the peaceful Caribbean waters, are nothing short of magical.
n ADMIRAL’S INN & GUNPOWDER SUITES
Steeped in colonial charm, The Inn at English Harbour is a boutique hotel located near the historic Nelson’s Dockyard. The elegant suites provide a sense of timeless luxury set in the UNESCO world heritage site of Nelsons Dockyard. For those who love to explore the passage of time and stand where those before them once stood, there is no other hotel that comes close. Adjoining the inn via boat ride is the Gunpowder Suites; the converted gunpowder magazine occupying the dominant position on the bluff overlooking the pool and restaurant. The layout is perfect for a family day out and is a firm favourite with our children, while Nadia and I take in the serene views of Nelson’s Dockyard across the waterway swinging gently in one of the hammocks sipping a cocktail.

Now that you’ve discovered the charm of Antigua & Barbuda, the pivotal question arises - should you invest your hard-earned money into a dream Caribbean property? Below are some of the advantages to buying a property on this paradise island and also some important things to consider.
BUYING PROPERTY IN ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
CAPITAL GAIN
One of the predominant aspects to understand is that the vast majority of properties here accrue considerable capital gain year on year, typically around 5%. Due to relatively high transfer taxes, however, the turnover of properties is minimal, making property flipping an uncommon venture. If you’re contemplating buying, it’s wise to consider a minimum hold of five years to optimise benefits.
RENTAL INCOME
Numerous homeowners decide to lease their properties for holiday rentals while they are not in Antigua. The principal incentive to doing this is that the income from rentals, while the owner is not on island, generally ensures the property remains in excellent condition and well maintained in their absence. Typically, there’s also a surplus that can be utilised, but it’s essential to acknowledge that it is rarely a significant income stream, after management and maintenance costs have been considered.
LIFESTYLE
Owning a property in Antigua provides an unparalleled opportunity to adjust your lifestyle and really get to grips with your work life balance. You can visit for a short break to escape and relax, alone, or with family or friends. Or if you’re just looking for a change of scenery, and your job allows you to work remotely, then get your home office sorted or find a beachfront restaurant spot with fast WiFi to work from and stay as long as you need.
TAX BENEFITS
Antigua & Barbuda has no inheritance tax and no personal income tax so if you choose to reside here full time then there may also be some significant financial perks. If you’re intrigued and wish to learn more about the options available, in a pressure-free discussion, feel free to browse the subsequent pages and discover what Antigua can offer or contact the nation’s leading real estate agency - Luxury Locations.

RELOCATION, RELOCATION, RELOCATION
Discover 365 talked to Carly Davies, now Company Partner at Luxury Locations Antigua about her relocation to Antigua & Barbuda and how she found the process. Originally from the North of England, near Liverpool, before her move to our wonderful paradise island, Carly had been living in New Zealand for about eight years, so she was no stranger to making a new life for herself in a foreign land. So have a read, let her calm any nerves and assure you that moving to Antigua & Barbuda is probably going to be the best decision you’ve ever made…
What made you decide to move to Antigua & Barbuda?
After enjoying a great 8–9 years in New Zealand, I felt like a change of scenery. I love to learn and travel and after exploring other parts of the world I realised experiencing new things is the best way to grow and appreciate what the world has to offer. It also helps that moving here is then being only half way across the ditch, so much less travel time to visit family.
What do you like in particular about living and working in Antigua?
I love the laidback attitude, the simplicity of beach life and the weather.
Which part of the island have you decided to live on and why?
I chose to live on the West Coast mainly for the beaches. I love the sea on the west side as it’s a lot calmer over here and more of what I picture when I think of a Caribbean beach. Fortunately, the property where I am is approximately 2 minutes walk to the beach – heaven!
“Settling here in Antigua was generally easy and I had the benefit of being exposed to a lot of other expats living nearby that had shared the same experiences.”
Have you bought in Antigua? Or long term rental?
Currently I have a long-term rental. I loved living in Valley Church so I have considered purchasing there but currently I am looking into selling my house in New Zealand, so one thing at a time.
How difficult was it to find a long term rental?
During high-season it can be very difficult as there are limited options and the price is higher. I was able to find a long-term rental that suited me and with the expertise of Luxury Locations, the whole process was hassle free.
What was the practical process of moving like?
Can you take us through step by step?
I arrived in Antigua under the visitor’s visa, the terms of which can vary depending on which country you are from. I was advised that UK citizens are eligible for up to 6 months stay before needing to leave. My partner obtained work before arriving in Antigua, so I know the work permit process is reasonably long and arduous but I believe that there is a paid fast track service now available which would help people who are looking for work themselves. I came with just the luggage I could fly with, leaving a lot of personal items in New Zealand. So far, I have not needed any of it and have found that for an Antigua lifestyle you don’t need much.
We only had assistance from a new work colleague as we tried to find our first long term rental. We signed up to it prior to visiting, but it turned out to be great for a first rental with a brilliant view. However now that we’re here on the island I have been able to find and view options myself and with the great help of the fountain of knowledge that is Nadia Dyson. Long term property rental is not cheap, and you needt o be aware that community fees for places like Jolly Harbour are not included in the monthly rent payment. All apartments we have viewed have been fully furnished to various standards, usually dictated by rental budget.
Settling here in Antigua was generally easy and I had the benefit of being exposed to a lot of other expats living nearby that had shared the same experiences. The locals are always helpful and give you tips on the island as I experienced when I took my first bus out to the sticks. A lovely local lady even escorted me through her neighbourhood at one point as she could see the look of terror on my face when she mentioned the wild dogs in the area... and I’m a dog lover!
How did you find settling into your new life here in Antigua and Barbuda?
Life here was easy to adapt to for me, it’s not for everyone and I’m not sure whether I found it easier due to already experiencing expat life, but I loved Antigua the moment I arrived and still love it just as much now. I feel incredibly lucky every day, the views and nature here are hard not to love and although it’s the complete opposite to New Zealand and England it already feels like home.
Can you offer any tips or dos and don’ts to help readers contemplating relocating to Antigua?
First tip – read Discover 365 Magazine! Seriously though, this magazine would have really helped me when I first arrived, especially the ‘things to know’ section and top tips at the beginning, discovering everything there is to do, the local food, local music, best beaches and the different locations. It really is a great guide. The second tip – be prepared to adjust to Antiguan time, the lifestyle here is a lot more laidback (just the way I like it). Another important thing to know – don’t drink rum punch on an empty stomach!
First of all, we should probably explain what this is, for those of you who don’t already know. If you do… feel free to skip ahead.

THE ALLURING ADVANTAGES OF PROPERTY RENTALS
While opulent hotels and resorts present ample accommodation options, the magnetic appeal of renting a property is gaining undeniable traction among discerning travellers. Here we delve into the countless benefits of experiencing Antigua’s allure by choosing a rental property over a conventional hotel stay.
ROOM TO BREATHE
In the days of our youth, hotels, with their simplicity and consistent service, were a marvel; the expansive communal areas and pools were territories of wonder. A single bag was my companion, fulfilling all my needs. However, family vacations have evolved into a different, more luggage-centric endeavour where the primary quest is for expansive space and secluded privacy.
FAMILY TIME
Navigating holidays with two small children can be an intricate dance, and maintaining their composure becomes an art form. Opting for a villa rental can mean you are able to allow your kids to be their boisterous selves (within the parental tolerance threshold of course) and turn potential embarrassment into a private and memorable family moment instead. This aspect is particularly relevant around pools and communal areas of hotels, where parents strive to maintain a balance between relaxation and supervising their children’s volume levels.
CULINARY FREEDOM & FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING
The absence of stringent restaurant timings is a blessing, especially when combating jet lag. Whether it’s breakfast at the eerie hours of 4 am or a late lunch at 3pm, the flexibility of having your own kitchen in rental properties is a true luxury, enabling self-catering at your own pace. This freedom, coupled with the cost efficiency for those with hearty appetites, makes having a kitchen a delightful bonus, with restaurants still being an accessible option for renters, offering a variety of culinary choices. The possibility to choose self-catering elevates the vacation experience, making it more practical and enjoyable.
ENCOURAGING EXPLORATION
Rental properties awaken the inner explorer, urging vacationers to venture out to local shops, discover unfamiliar territories, and soak in the local milieu. These unplanned escapades add a layer of excitement to vacations, steering away from the comfortable monotony of all-inclusive services and omnipresent hotel staff.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Significantly, rental properties quickly morph into a comforting home away from home, converging the conveniences of hotels—cleaning, catering, tour arrangements, and concierge services—with the added benefits of more space, privacy, and being more costeffective.
As you ponder your next holiday destination, consider the enchanting possibility of a holiday rental home. It is not just about the space and flexibility; it’s about living the Antiguan experience in its truest essence, indulging in local ingredients, and creating unique, untold stories amidst the island’s serene landscapes. Opting for a rental property in Antigua lets you transcend the conventional and embrace a world of intimate encounters, culinary adventures, and unscripted explorations, all the while enjoying the luxuries and comforts of your chosen retreat.

CHOOSING TO BUILD A PROPERTY IN ANTIGUA: A PARADIGM OF CUSTOMISATION AND MODERN LIVING
BUILDING IN ANTIGUA
Finding the perfect location within Antigua & Barbuda’s serene landscape and building your very own bespoke dream home exactly the way you want it, offers a compelling alternative to purchasing pre-existing homes. With an abundant array of green field sites and reputable builders, many potential homeowners are enticed by the opportunity to manifest their dream property in this tropical paradise, tapping into the benefits of modern designs and customisation. This exploration into creating something new in Antigua delves into the significant advantages and considerations that come with choosing to build over buying an existing property.
ADVANTAGES OF BUILDING IN ANTIGUA
1. Customisation and Personalisation
Building your own property unfolds the canvas of creativity, allowing homeowners to take control of everything from the floor plan to the final finishes. Whether it’s a unique master bedroom layout, a personalised barbecue area, sauna, or gym, every corner of the house can resonate with your very specific vision. This can be favourable to purchasing existing properties and then investing more money in renovations. The thing that I would say is this. If you are building a house from scratch, you really do need to know what you want. If you are the kind of person who often isn’t sure what they want until they see it, then be sure to find the right architect and designer to guide you through the process of bringing your dream home into being.
2. Modern Standards and Designs
New builds in Antigua encapsulate modern aesthetics and are constructed with cutting-edge, energy-efficient materials that meet or exceed contemporary standards. Advances in building methodologies now enable the creation of homes with oversized sliding doors, accentuating the blend of indoor-outdoor living, a pivotal aspect in the Caribbean lifestyle.
3. Lower Maintenance and Enhanced Amenities
A new property also ensures reduced maintenance and repair costs. It’s not rocket science, the place is brand new, things will not be breaking. Modern amenities like smart home technology and updated security systems can also mean better peace of mind and state-of-theart kitchen appliances can help lower energy bills and ensure greater comfort and convenience.
