Cenni storici Vi sono luoghi che emanano un richiamo unico ed indefinibile, percepito solo da particolari persone.

L’Hotel Universo è uno di questi luoghi.

Il Palazzo che ospita l’Hotel Universo, Palazzo Paoli, fu costruito intorno al 1700. Fu convertito prima in Locanda, intorno al 1850, sotto il nome di “Locanda Universo e Tosca” e in seguito, nel 1857, è divenuto il “Royal Hotel Universo e Tosca”, annettendo anche l’adiacente Palazzo Arnolfini. È uno dei monumenti storici della Lucca del XIX secolo. È stato frequentato dai più grandi nomi della lirica e del teatro italiano ed internazionale che recitavano nel teatro che sta proprio di fronte all’albergo. La residenza conserva gli ambienti, gli eleganti saloni e l’atmosfera di un tempo, tranquilla ed elegante.

È il luogo ideale per godere appieno dell’antica città medievale di Lucca.

Si narra che, durante una visita a Lucca, re Vittorio Emanuele, in una serata di gala in cui gli vennero presentati i cittadini più autorevoli, incontrasse il proprietario dell’Hotel Universo.

“Io sono il padrone dell’Universo” disse l’uomo presentandosi. “Beato lei” rispose il re, “Io mi accontenterei di essere il padrone di questa Italietta!”.

Lo scrittore vicentino Guido Piovene sostenne che Lucca fosse la sola città italiana rimasta totalmente chiusa e circondata da alte mura, costruite nei secoli XVI e XVII, e che ancora si nascondesse agli occhi di coloro che si avvicinassero provenendo dalle pianure circostanti.

All’inizio dell’Ottocento l’immagine troppo severa delle mura fu mitigata da un cerchio di alberi piantati sopra i muri massicci, che indusse il poeta Gabriele D’Annunzio a celebrare Lucca come “la città dell’arborato cerchio”.

L’Hotel Universo si trova proprio al centro di queste mura.

Lucca La città fu fondata attorno al VI secolo a.C. dagli Etruschi e divenne successivamente un importante municipium romano. La massima fioritura si ebbe a partire dal Medioevo e nel Rinascimento: ancora oggi Lucca (la “città dalle cento chiese”) conserva intatta l’antica magia di strade, piazze, palazzi e torri, tra cui spicca quella dei Guinigi sulla cui sommità svettano i caratteristici lecci. Suggestivo e ricco di fascino il centro storico, interamente racchiuso nelle maestose Mura alberate cinquecentesche (4,2 km).

Da non perdere la cattedrale di San Martino, la chiesa di San Michele in foro, la chiesa di San Frediano, il Battistero di San Giovanni e la cinquecentesca chiesa di San Paolino.

Suggestivo l’antico Anfiteatro romano, in origine esterno alla città, trasformato in piazza dall’architetto Lorenzo Nottolini (1830).

Particolarmente interessante la visita ai Musei nazionali di Palazzo Mansi e di Villa Guinigi come anche al Museo della Cattedrale.

Una visita meritano anche la casa natale di Giacomo Puccini e l’ottocentesco Orto Botanico.

Media Valle del Serchio e Garfagnana Barga e dintorni La cittadina sorge su una collina dominata dal maestoso Duomo di impronta romanica al cui interno si ammirano le terrecotte del Della Robbia e uno straordinario pulpito in marmo del duecento con mirabili bassorilievi.

Barga, ricca di testimonianze storiche, conserva un fascino particolare con le sue piccole strade tortuose, i suoi angoli caratteristici e la pianta medievale.

Bella anche la pieve romanica del paesino di Loppia (VI secolo).

Vale la pena di visitare a Castelvecchio la casa-museo di Giovanni Pascoli dove il poeta trascorse molti anni della sua vita.

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana e dintorni Il capoluogo garfagnino risale all’epoca longobarda. Nella piazza principale sorge la bella Rocca Ariostesca di origine medievale dove soggiornò l’Ariosto, chiamato dai Duchi Estensi a governare la Garfagnana nel 1522.

Nel Museo archeologico, suddiviso in due mostre permanenti sul “Mesolitico della Garfagnana” e la “Montagna e il suo popolo”, interessanti testimonianze della storia della vallata.

Da visitare inoltre il Duomo del Quattrocento ricco di opere pregevoli e, nelle vicinanze del paese, la superba fortezza cinquecentesca di Montalfonso, costruita come rifugio per la città in caso d’assalto. Un vero paradiso per escursionisti ed alpinisti è il vicino “Parco regionale delle Alpi Apuane” che si estende sulla catena.

Castiglione di Garfagnana e dintorni La rocca di questo paese fortificato è del XIII secolo e si conservano ancora le antiche mura che cingono la città in un quadrilatero.

Tra le località più suggestive della zona Casone di Profecchia e il Passo delle Radici soprattutto per chi ama sciare.

Da visitare San Pellegrino in Alpe, paese collocato in splendida posizione panoramica sulla cresta dell’Appennino, con il Museo etnografico “Don Luigi Pellegrini” che raccoglie oltre 3000 oggetti, preziose testimonianze della civiltà contadina.

Le Alpi Apuane Le Alpi Apuane costituiscono l’area dei rilievi marmiferi nella provincia di Lucca e il marmo rappresenta la base principale dell’economia dell’Alta Versilia.

Al tempo stesso le Alpi Apuane meritano di essere visitate per i pregi alpinistici e panoramici.

Un itinerario di poche decine di chilometri porta dal litorale alle montagne attraverso suggestive “valli bianche”.

Pietrasanta è il capoluogo della Versilia storica, una microregione della Provincia e centro della lavorazione artistica del marmo, che ha carattere prevalentemente artigiano ed è praticata negli studi dei maestri d’arte locali.

I “marmorari” pietrasantesi sono molto apprezzati.

Historical traces There are places that have an undefinable, unique feel to them; something that only certain people can sense.

The Hotel Universo is one of these places.

The Palazzo, Palazzo Paoli, was built sometime in the 18th century. It was converted into a Inn, around 1850, under the name of “Locanda Universo and Tosca” and became a hotel in 1857, when guests included great names from Italian and international opera and theatre, who were playing at the theatre just opposite. The building still has the rooms, elegant salons and peacefully elegant atmosphere of times gone by.

This is the ideal place in which to enjoy the old medieval city of Lucca to the full.

It is said that during a visit to Lucca, King Vittorio Emanuele, in a gala evening in which the most honourable citizens were being presented, met the owner of the Hotel Universo, who introduced himself with, “I am the owner of the Universo”. “Lucky you” responded the king, “I am quite happy to be the ruler of just Italy!!”.

Writer from Vicenza, Guido Piovene, sustained that Lucca was the only city in Italy to remain totally enclosed and surrounded by high walls, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, which continued to conceal the city from those approaching from the surrounding plains.

In the early 19th century, the harsh and forbidding appearance of the city’s walls was softened a little by a circle of trees planted on top of the solid walls, causing poet Gabriele D’Annunzio to celebrate Lucca as the “city of the wooded circle”.

The Hotel Universo is right at the centre of these walls.

Lucca Founded by the Etruscans in the VI century before Christ, the city later became an important Roman municipium. At the height of its prosperity from the Middle Age and throughout the Reinassance, Lucca (the “town of hundred churches”) has preserved intact the ancient mystery of its streets, squares, palaces and towers. The most conspicuous tower is the Guinigi one with its holm-oaks growing out from the top.

Rich in history, the charming old-town centre is completely surrounded by the imposing, tree-lined, 16th century town walls (4.2 km).

Worth visiting are the cathedral of San Martino, the churches of San Michele in foro and San Frediano, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the XVI century church of San Paolino.

Impressive is the Roman anphitheatre dating back to the II century A.D. which was originally outside the town and converted into a square by the architect Lorenzo Nottolini (1830).

Particularly interesting is the visit to the National Museums of Palazzo Mansi and Villa Guinigi as to the Cathedral Museum. Don’t miss to visit Giacomo Puccini’s birthhouse and the XIX century Botanical Garden.

Barga and its surroundings Situated on a hillside, the city is dominated by its imposing Romanesque Cathedral where it is possible to admire terracotta works by Della Robbia and an outstanding XIII century marble pulpit in beautiful bas-relief.

Rich in historical heritage, with its narrow and winding streets, characteristic corners and medieval layout, Barga has a particular charm of its own.

There is also a fine Romanesque parish church at Loppia (VI century).

Well worth visiting is Giovanni Pascoli’s house and museum at Castelvecchio where the poet lived for many years.

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana Dating from the time of the Lombards, this is the chief town of the Garfagnana area. In the main square there is a splendid medieval fortress where Ariosto stayed when, in 1522, he was called by the Dukes of Estensi to govern the Garfagnana.

At the archeological museum there are two permanent exhibitions on “the Mesolithic period in the Garfagnana” and on “the mountain and its hinabitants” that give an interesting insight into the history of the valley.

Visit also the XV century cathedral with its wealth of important works and not far from the village the superb XVII century Montalfonso fortress built as a refuge for the townspeople in times of siege.

The nearby “Apuan Alps Regional Park” offers a real paradise for hikers and climbers.

Castiglione di Garfagnana The fortress here dates from the XIII century and the four sides of the town are still enclosed by its ancient walls.

Casone di Profecchia and the Passo delle Radici are just two of the most attractive places in this area, especially for skiing enthusiasts.

Situated on the crest of the Appennines, San Pellegrino in Alpe offers splendid views and at the “Don Luigi Pellegrini” ethnographic museum there are over 3000 objects on display, valuable evidence of its rural culture.

The Apuan Alps The Apuan Alps consitute the area of marble extraction in the Province of Lucca and marble represents the principle basis of the economy of Upper Versilia.

At the same time, the Apuan Alps deserve to be visited for their alpine worths and panoramas.

An itinerary of few kilometres takes one from the coast to the mountains through suggestive “white valleys”.

Pietrasanta presents the typical characteristics of historic Versilia of which it is the main city.

Versilia, in fact, a micro-region of the Province, is famous for the artistic working of marble.

The “marmorari” of Pietrasanta are very much appreciated.

Historische Spuren Es sind Orte, die eine unbestimmbare, einzigartigen Gefühl ausstrahlen, etwas, dass nur bestimmte Menschen verstehen können.

Das Hotel Universo ist einer dieser Orte.

Der Palast, “Palazzo Paoli”, wurde irgendwann im 18 Jahrhundert gebaut. Im Jahre1850 war es ein Gasthaus, unter dem Namen “Universum und Locanda Tosca”. Dann im Jahre 1857 war es zu einem Hotel geworden, “Royal Hotel Universo e Tosca”. Die Gäste des Hotels waren die großen Namen der italienischen und der internationalen Opern-und Theater, die in dem Theater gegenüber dem Hotel spielten. Das Gebäude hat noch die Zimmer, die elegante Räume und die friedliche elegante Atmosphäre den vergangener Zeiten.

Das ist der ideale Ort, der alten mittelalterlichen Stadt Lucca zu genieβen.

Es wird gesagt, dass bei einem Besuch in Lucca in der Gelegenheit einem Gala-Abend, in dem dem König die ehrenwerte Bürger vorgestellten wurden, traf der König Vittorio Emanuele den Besitzer der Hotel Universo. “Ich bin der Eigentümer des Universums” sagte der Mann.

“Du Glücklicker”, antwortete der König”: Ich bin ganz froh, nur der Herrscher von Italien zu sein !.

Anfangs des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden Bäume über den Wände gepflanzt. Daher sagte der Dichter Gabriele D’Annunzio, daβ Lucca “die Stadt der bewaldeten Kreis” ist.

Das Hotel Universo ist rechts in der Mitte dieser Wände.

Lucca Die Stadt, um das 6. Jh. v. Chr. von den Etruskern gegruendet, war in der Roemerzeit ein bedeutendes “municipium”. Ihre Bluetezeit erlebte sie vom Mittelalter bis in die Renaissance: unveraendert bewahrt Lucca (die “Stadt der hundert Kirchen”) den Zauber alter Zeiten in den Strassen, Plaetzen, Palaesten un Tuermen, darunter auch der Guinigi-Turm mit seinen charakteristischen Baeumen auf dem Gipfel.

Eindrucksvoll und faszinierend ist das Altstadtzentrum, vollstaendig von den maechtigen Stadtmauern aus dem 16. Jahrh. umgeben, die mit Baeumen bepflanzt sind.

Sehenswert sind: San Martins Dom, die Kirche San Michele in foro und San Frediano, die Taufkapelle San Giovanni, die 16. Jahrh. Kirche San Paolino; die Museen der Dom, von Palazzo Mansi und Villa Guinigi; das roemisches Amphitheater, das Geburtshaus Giacomo Puccinis, der botanischer Garten.

Barga Die sehenswerte kleine Stadt befindet sich auf einer Anhoehe, die von dem maechtigen Dom romanischer Praegung dominiert wird.

Im Inneren kostbare Robbianische Terrakotten und eine aussergewoehnlich schoene Kanzel aus dem 13. Jahrh. mit wertvollen Basreliefs.

Barga, reich an historischen Zeugnissen, bewahrt noch heute den gewissen Zauber alter Zeiten in seinen malerischen, ansteigenden und gewundenen Gaesschen und charakterischen Plaetzen.

Sehenswert ist das Museum Giovanni Pascoli in Castelvecchio, ein Haus in dem der Dichter viele Jahre verbrachte.

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana Der Hauptort der Garfagnana geht auf die langobardische Zeit zurueck. Die gewaltige Festung, in der sich Ariosto, im 1522 als Statthalter von den estensischen Grafen eingesetzt, aufhielt, dominiert dei ganze Stadt.

Das Archeologische Museum, in zwei staendige Austellung (“Mittelsteinzeit in der Garfagnana” und “Die Berge und Ihre Bewohner”) aufgeteilt, beherbergt interessante Zeugnisse aus der Geschichte des Tales.

Gut erhaltener Dom aus dem 15. Jahrh. mit zahlreichen wertvollen Werken und, in der Naehe des Ortes gelegen, die imposante Festung des Montalfonso.

Ein wahres Paradies fuer Wanderer und Bergsteiger ist der nahe gelegene Regionale Naturschutzpark der Apuanischen Alpen, der sich ueber die ganze Gebirgskette erstreckt.

Castiglione di Garfagnana Die im 8. Jh. erbaute Burg des Ortes bewahrt bis heute die antiken Mauern, die die Stadt in eine viereckige Festigung einschliessen. Die reizvollen Orte Casone di Profecchia und Passo delle Radici sind Ausflugziel zahlreicher Skifahrer.

Sehenswert ist auch das alte Bergdorf San Pellegrino in Alpe am Grat des Apennin in herrlicher Position gelegen, mit seinem voelkerkundlichen Museum “Don Luigi Pellegrini”, das eine umfang-reiche Sammlung von mehr als 3.000 Objekten aus dem Leben der apenninischen Bergbevoelkerung enthaelt.

Die Apuanischen Alpen In den Apuanischen Alpen befinden sich die Marmorvorkommen der Provinz Lucca, und der Marmor bildet die Grundlage der Wirtschaft der oberen Versilia. Es lohnt sich auch die Apuanischen Alpen wegen ihrer Schoenheit zu besuchen. Eine nur wenige Kilometer lange Strasse fuehrt von der Kueste durch die eindrucksvollen “weissen Taeler” ins Gebirge.

Pietrasanta ist die Hauptstadt der historischen Versilia, einer Mikroregion der Provinz und Zentrum der kunstvollen Verarbeitung des Marmors. Es handelt sich hauptsaechlich um handwerkliche Arbeit, die in den Atelies der oertlichen Meister ausgefuehrt wird.

Die Marmorarbeiter von Pietrasanta werden sehr geschaetzt.
