£120m townhouse sbridge

International property developer Finchatton has unveiled Knighton Place, the first £120m new-build townhouse scheme to be built in Knightsbridge for over ten years. The five seven-storey townhouses in Yeoman’s Row celebrate the rich history of the borough, with each home named after British architects who have helped shape Knightsbridge: Blomfield, Eyton, Leverton, Caroe and Elsam. >>

Luxury Interiors Magazine - 07

One townhouse has already been sold off-market. The remaining homes launch with Leverton House, a 5-bedroom family home, featuring 6,255 sq ft of versatile accommodation, with a bespoke Linley kitchen, gym, temperature-controlled wine room, media room, and secure underground parking (accessible by a car lift). Some of the townhouses also feature extensive spa areas with whirlpools and spa treatment rooms.

Knighton Place provides a dedicated on-site concierge giving residents access to concierge services which would usually only be available within apartment schemes rather than individual townhouses. Andrew Dunn, co-founder at Finchatton, comments “Knightsbridge is a fantastic location for families, with Hyde Park on your doorstep and plenty of restaurants and facilities, but the area lacks homes built with the modern family in mind. Knighton Place townhouses address this through generous spaces where families can gather, and for families with international links, there are guest suites for when friends come to stay.” With interiors by the firm’s in-house design team, each residence is spacious and perfectly proportioned, with period detailing alongside the latest trends in home technology. From the exterior, a red stone facade complements the stunning architecture of Yeoman’s Row. Each home incorporates above and below ground terraces with living green walls.

deal of structural reinforcement works to the foundations of the building, to prevent it sinking under its own weight. “Working with old buildings is a familiar challenge, but in the case of Sanders we needed to work with what was initially three individual buildings. One of our very first tasks was in vastly reducing the number of guestrooms, replacing cramped 3* spaces with ones more fitting of a luxury boutique hotel.

Sanders Hotel, Copenhagen Rooted in the rich cultural fabric of its locale, as well as the personal experiences of its multi-talented proprietor, Sanders Hotel features a compelling interior by London studio, Lind + Almond.

“I have always wanted to open a hotel combining these worlds; the intimacy of the theatre world, the creativity of the fashion scene, the ambitions of architecture and the musicality of ballet.

Nestled on a charming street directly behind the Royal Danish Theatre, Sanders is formed of two townhouses, fused together into one exceptional, 54-key property. Though brand new, the hotel is woven with a rich cultural tapestry, both in its architecture, and in the passion for theatre and storytelling shared by its owner, Alexander Kølpin.

Working in collaboration with Londonbased interior design studio, Lind + Almond, Alexander has created a classic, yet cosmopolitan venue that, he hopes, will recapture the area’s legacy as a former hotspot for the city’s cultural cognoscenti in the 1970’s.

A former ballet dancer, actor and director, Alexander wished to capture the essence of these creative worlds in order to curate a unique and imaginative guest experience.

One of the initial challenges was to consolidate the structure of the property, and the design team have carefully reimagined the layout of the two buildings to ensure it is fit for purpose.

“My mother is a fashion designer, my father is an architect, my own background is as a ballet dancer and director, and my family has a history of restoring old buildings to their former glory,” he says.

“Much of this historic part of Copenhagen is built on land reclaimed from the sea,” explains Lind + Almond co-founder, Pernille Lind. “As such there was initially a great

16 - Luxury Interiors Magazine

“This meant in some cases amalgamating two rooms into one, whilst spanning between two buildings. We had a big challenge in that the floor levels in the separate buildings frequently misaligned.” Once the configuration of the hotel was perfected, it was key that the interior should follow suit. “Entering Sanders is like stepping into a theatre,” affirms Alexander. “Guests will always remain centre stage, but the carefully curated interiors will be the elegant and exquisite backdrop for their experience. “From the first note to the closing of the curtains, it is all about the journey you take a spectator on. I think about the guest

experience at Sanders in a similar way.” The hotel’s reception certainly sets the scene in the way Alexander describes with its spectacular 1940’s vintage chandelier. Designed by iconic architect, Carlo Scarpa, and handmade by the Murano glass masters of Venini, its 300 beautiful glass prisms create a warm, welcoming glow over the reception desk. Throughout the hotel’s public spaces and accommodation, Lind + Almond has selected a subtle palette of earthy, timeless tones. Stained timber, honed marble, velvet and rattan abound to create a classic feel. While the woodwork positions the hotel very firmly in Denmark, exotic marble from Italy, Portugal and Greece, slate from the British Lake District and limestone from Croatia bring a cosmopolitan, outward looking ambience. Indeed, the interiors of the hotel’s restaurant, Sanders Kitchen, reflect on the golden age of travel and the exploration of new places and cultures. Dark green leather seating, rattan and bamboo – blended with flamboyant printed fabrics and furnishings – bring a colonial edge.Z

Within the bar, TATA, Lind + Almond have opted for bolder statements of colour in reference to Alexander’s background in theatre, and of course the hotel’s proximity to the Royal Danish Theatre. Sumptuous red curtains set the stage here, while plush seating and artfully-placed lighting create an intimate, almost seductive feel. “For me Tata is a real centrepiece, and I’m particularly fond of the concept behind the design,” says Richy Almond, co-founder of Lind + Almond. “As a take on a theatre bar, Tata references Alexander’s past life as a ballet dancer. It aims to attract artists and creatives, both local and foreign, to mingle as they once did decades ago in the same space.” From theatre bar to rooftop oasis, The Courtyard offers Sanders residents and the public alike a rare rooftop space overlooking Copenhagen’s picturesque rooftops. Here, ivy-covered walls and a garden of exotic plants create an inside-outside feel, coupled with colonial-inspired furniture and a roaring fireplace. “I must say the 5th floor Orangery is a real design highlight for me,” says Pernille.

“Maybe it’s due to my own ‘exotic’ background (being half Thai).” “Iconic architect Arne Jakobsen designed the Charlottenborg chair and Belladonna sofa, both featured in this space, embracing foreign materials in their use of bamboo. This, along with tropical printed fabrics, lush plants and the indoor/outdoor connection, takes me back to my childhood home.” Carefully curated artwork provides the finishing touch to the hotel’s interior, capturing the narrative strands of the property’s historical significance, as well as Alexander’s personal history. The collection was sourced by Lind + Almond and commissioned by Alexander in collaboration with art consultancy practice, Dais Contemporary. Drawing from Copenhagen’s waterfront context, the modernist and expressionist periods synonymous with important works of Danish art and design, as well as Alexander’s love of movement, dance and the human form, this collection of artwork embodies the hotel’s unique philosophy – a blend of national pride with a firmly cosmopolitan perspective.

NEW DESIGN COLLECTION FROM NORMANN COPENHAGEN WILL HELP CREATE INTERNATIONAL GROWTH FOR TIVOLI Normann Copenhagen and Tivoli enter an exciting new collaboration and will launch a large collection of design products under the name Tivoli in 2018. Expectations for the collection are high with a target of a three-digit million revenue within the first 3 to 4 years. The primary earnings are expected to come from export markets, where the interest in and demand for Danish design, Danish culture and the Danish term “hygge” has seen considerable growth. As one of the leading Danish design companies, Normann Copenhagen has positioned Danish design internationally in 18 years and to date retains more than 80 percent of its revenue from exports to 87 countries. This strong position is used as lever to market the Tivoli brand worldwide and spread the brand name of the Danish culture icon that will celebrate its 175th anniversary in 2018. Normann Copenhagen is a brand in motion and always looking for new opportunities. In collaboration with Tivoli, the people behind Normann Copenhagen took the starting point in a blank canvas and created a brand new design brand with original product design, visual identity, storytelling, manufacturing, marketing and international distribution. Tivoli’s versatile history and many facets, such as the mood, colors, patterns, architecture, garden art, design and culture heritage, inspire the collection’s common design language. The Tivoli collection 20 - Luxury Interiors Magazine xx

will contain products in categories such as lighting, textiles, tableware, living accessories, scent series and gift items. The products will be sold through Normann Copenhagen’s global retail network of 3500 international design stores, museum stores, furniture stores, department stores, and online shops. The ambitious cooperation for Tivoli is another step towards achieving their longterm vision of creating an all-year-roundbusiness. “A collaboration like this with an international design collection allows Tivoli to exist outside of Tivoli’s traditional opening seasons and independent of the Garden in the center of Copenhagen. Tivoli becomes present all over the world all year round, one can say. It is a unique opportunity for us, and I have great expectations, “says Lars Liebst, Managing Director of Tivoli. Originally, Tivoli reached out to Normann Copenhagen asking the design company to design a few products for another new initiative of the Garden; a Tivoli retail shop scheduled to open in March 2018. Normann Copenhagen quickly saw opportunities to expand the cooperation from a few products to an entire collection. “We saw some interesting opportunities in joining a larger partnership where we could activate Tivoli’s strong brand value by using our expertise in running a design business. We conceptualized a design program and

pitched it to Tivoli’s management, and the project was well received. We experience a high demand on international markets for Danish values, and with this collection, consumers can get a high quality design product spiced with authentic, Danish heritage, “explains CEO Poul Madsen, who, together with Jan Andersen, founded Normann Copenhagen in 1999. For both Normann Copenhagen and Tivoli it has been crucial that the customer can feel Tivoli in the collection, but also that each product can stand alone. Normann Copenhagen’s design studio has designed all details of shape, function and materials, for color cards, identity and packaging. A frequent Tivoli guest will recognize references from the Tivoli Garden, but there is also room for surprises where the source of inspiration is not necessarily obvious. The collection will be expanded with even more products and product categories in the future. The Tivoli design collection will be presented in spring 2018 and is expected to be ready for Christmas sales in 2018.

Alongside the standard colours, Lyndon is honouring its reputation for excellence in bespoke manufacturing by offering the option to specify its furniture frames in any RAL colour - a useful option when reflecting branding in interior design schemes. Thanks to the new coloured frames, designers now have unparalled freedom to create bright and energetic interiors. Chosen to blend with other colours in the design scheme, or to create a high-impact look by mixing and matching bold colours from the same corner of the colour wheel, coloured frames offer endless design permutations. Tim Armitt, Managing Director at Lyndon, comments: “Whether it’s for leisure, hospitality, the workplace, or retail and leisure interiors, the use of colour is becoming a major consideration and a fundamental element of the overall design. Anyone can add colour to a design scheme using accent walls, soft furnishings, and the usual accessories, however, few dare to venture into the realm of coloured furniture for a brave design statement.

NEW AWARDS FOR BONALDO Bonaldo has received two important acknowledgements: the Good Design Award 2017 for the Cop table and the Honoree mention of the Best of Year award 2017 for the Eddy armchair. Both products, novelties from 2017 presented at the Salone del Mobile of Milan, with these acknowledgements confirm once again Bonaldo’s success on an international scale. The Good Design Award was set up in 1950 and it is organised by the Chicago Athenaeum - a museum of architecture and design - in conjunction with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies, and it is one of the most internationally acclaimed design awards. For the 2017 edition the jury selected new design products and projects from 48 countries and awarded them for their great innovation. Among these, the Cop table designed by Roberto Paoli for Bonaldo. Conviviality, which is the primary function of any table, is expressed with irony in this design by Roberto Paoli: in everyday life tables are laid with various objects that cover their surface, whereas in Cop the table top is like a stretch of water, where the same objects are overturned to form its original base. without brakes, which brings to mind a time when the streets were dirt roads and cyclists were heroes. Indeed, Belgian designer Alain Gilles dedicated his Eddy armchair to a fellow countryman and cycling legend.

The base of the Cop table is in painted metal, in a single colour or a combination of different hues. The table top is available in wood, glass or ceramic, either rectangular with bevelled corners, or round.

The shapes of Eddy draw their inspiration from the logic and styling of the cycling world, but also from the minimal and elemental graphic design of the fixie. “If you think about it, many of the first prototypes in the history of design were made in cycling workshops”, explains Alain Gilles, “because that’s where the masters of tubular metal manufacturing were, and they had the expertise required to make those objects with such essential style”. The Eddy armchair is built using the same logic as bicycle construction, around a tubular metal frame, while the seat is designed to be comfortable and ergonomic. The way in which the various parts of the frame are connected -

The Best of Year Award, organised by the American magazine Interior Design, every year shows the main trends and design projects all over the world. A review that in 2017 saw Bonaldo among the selected companies with the Honoree mention given to the Eddy armchair designed by Alain Gilles. using “quick release” fittings - is an obvious reference to the cycling world. The use of separate elements to make up the frame of the armchair makes it possible to play with the graphics and thus create multiple combinations of different colours and finishes. The armrests can be embellished with side pockets which are useful for storing books and magazines or to keep remote controls within easy reach. Eddy is available with or without a headrest.

LONDON DESIGN FAIR ACQUIRED BY DIVERSIFIED COMMUNICATIONS Diversified Communications UK has acquired the London-based Tent Exhibitions, organiser of London Design Fair, Tent London and Super Brands London. These events take place at the Old Truman Brewery each September, and form an important part of the UK’s leading design event, The London Design Festival, incorporating over 300 separate events across the capital. The event was developed by Jimmy MacDonald, who saw a clear gap for a curated show of highly innovative, emerging designers, and from the first show over 10 years ago, only invited designers have been allowed to take part in the event, in order to maintain consistently high-quality exhibits. The last event attracted around 500 exhibitors, including many international

groups, and attracted a total audience of 28,000. The full team at Tent Exhibitions will move across to Diversified with immediate effect, including Jimmy MacDonald, who will become group director of the events. Diversified UK’s Carsten Holm comments: “We are delighted to be welcoming Tent Exhibitions and their fantastic team headed up by Jimmy MacDonald to Diversified Communications. We have been watching the business over the past few years, and have been very impressed with the model and the growing success of the events, and I feel that Jimmy’s personal approach, customer focus and attention to detail is very similar to our own way of doing things. With the same team in place and a shared vision but with the added resources of Diversified, I hope the industry will enjoy working with us as much as they have

enjoyed working with Tent Exhibitions over the years. It already feels like a perfect fit for our business and is a significant development for Diversified’s UK business.” Jimmy MacDonald, group director of Tent Exhibitions, adds: “We are very proud of what we have achieved over the years and this is a timely and exciting new chapter for our events. Diversified share our passion and enthusiasm for creating exceptional events, with a reputation for delivering a great visitor and exhibitor experience. With the Tent Exhibitions team being transferred to Diversified and the show continuing to be organised from our offices in Shoreditch, it really is business as usual and great news for the show and our many loyal customers.” The next London Design Fair takes place at the Old Truman Brewery on 20th-23rd September 2018.

Design in collaboration with Box 9 Design, Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings is a Modern All-day Brasserie and Bar situated in Clerkenwell. Taking inspiration from the faded grandeur of a stately colonial home, B&H Buildings features a beautiful greenhouse and garden room, a relaxed café area, characterful private rooms and a large bar serving the brand’s famous cocktails. “External it resembles a row of terraced houses painted in faintly different colour tones internally a mosaic and concrete panels central bar sweeps across an apothecary like private dining room to a an overgrown greenhouse dining area. Roaring fireplaces and cane, hessian and waxed cotton furniture give a very British touch with an exotic backdrop.” - Lionel Real de Azúa, Director, Red Deer
