DR. LOUIS AGNESE JR. PRESIDENT UNIVERSITY OF INCARNATE WORD What are your keys to success?

I believe you have to work very hard. And working hard means working smart. Someone can put in a 24-hour-day, but waste a lot of time. Second, I believe it’s very important to pray. Talk to God about what it is you’re trying to do and listen to God—in whatever god you believe in. You need to have fun.

Anyone that is just working and doesn’t have fun at what they’re doing is not going to get a lot accomplished. Next is consistency. People have to know what you say is what you do on a consistent basis.

The last thing and probably as crucial is you need to be persistent. There are times when nothing can seem to get accomplished quickly. But if it’s the vision, if it’s a reality and if you can see it, then you just have to continuously work at it and be as persistent as possible. If you practice those five keys, I think you’d be a very effective person.

Why do you think so many choose to put their support in UIW? There’s no shortcuts. I try to involve the community in what we’re doing. A visionary leader who cannot build consensus could be the greatest visionary there is, but will not get anywhere. We are educating the Brainpower of South Texas, pure and simple. The last three years, we have been the number one private university in the country for the education of Hispanics. Number one. Not by percentage, but in gross number. South Texans come to school here, graduate from here and they stay here. 76% of our kids come from Bexar County and surrounding counties. We’ve been voted year over year as one of the best values in higher education. That’s important to me. It’s important to our students.

How do you stay motivated?

I stay energized because I stay involved with students and faculty and they give me energy. My executive team has been with me for a long time, some up to 30 years. Some have been my students that are now vice presidents. I love being around students. Last night I hosted dinner with my executive team at my home that included nine student leaders. We had a great conversation, shared our hopes and desires.

What value do you love sharing with your students?

Every graduation, any new student or faculty orientation, or any new program, I always end with something very simple, “The greatest gift from God is the gift of time.” We don’t know how much God gave us and therefore when we give time to someone else that’s the greatest gift. Some of us are very lucky. My dad’s 101 years old. He’s a lucky man.

I had a nephew that died at 29. So when you leave an encounter with another person, don’t leave something unsaid because you may not have the opportunity to say it. So it’s very important to use your time wisely.

Looking back, what advice would you have offered young Lou Agnese?

Stay interested, stay excited, stay involved. People like to be around energetic, enthusiastic people.

People say “Well, Lou, you’ve been doing this for 30 years, how do you stay so enthusiastic?” because I’ve not done the same thing for 30 years. Incarnate Word is very different this year than it was last year.

The more you give in life, the more you will receive.

That was a piece of advice which was given to me by a sister of the Incarnate Word 30 years ago, Sister Toni. She said, “Louie, remember. The more you give, the more you get.”

What is something during your Presidency that stands out for you, that you’ll never forget.

A couple of years ago, I took a sabbatical for five months because my wife was very ill. We were able to get through it together. It was very invigorating for me and life-saving for her, so it was a good deal.

Today, she’s 99.9% better.

What is on the horizon for UIW? We’ll open the medical school in 2017 which will be a great accomplishment. It’s very very good for San Antonio and for Texas. It’s going to provide a big need for primary care, family practice doctors, and we’ll open up the medical profession to Hispanics especially, (who are severely underrepresented nationally as doctors). We have changed the percentage of Hispanics from pharmacy, optometry and physical therapy, with our schools.

We’ll do the same in medicine.

What are you most proud of?

My greatest accomplishment in life has been the fact that I’ve been together with my wife for 47 years. We have two very successful, great children that have made us four grandchildren. Everyone’s healthy, everyone is successful, I couldn’t be happier. That’s my greatest accomplishment.
