Philanthropic spotlight It was the off-season in 2012 when the Olsen family received the surprise of a life-time. In January, Kara and Greg found out they were unexpectantly expecting. Happiness filled their hearts, and in February they learned Kara was carrying not one, but two bundles of joy. They were ecstatic. Soon they received news that rocked their family to the core. One of the babies would be perfectly healthy, while the other would be born with a severe congenital heart defect. Kara and Greg faced all the emotion, challenges and decisions that are only known by parents of severely sick children. They instantly decided that they were going to give the baby the best chance at life, providing him access to the best doctors, stateof-the-art treatment, techniques and technology. Because so much of their life revolves around football, they’re calling this phase “T.J.’s ‘HEARTest’ Yard. Together with Levine Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center they made it happen. The ‘HEARTest’ Yard initiative is a family service program administered in conjuction with Levine Children’s Hospital located in Charlotte, NC. This cuttingedge program will provide families of babies affected by congenital heart disease with a multitude of services including inhome, private nursing care, physical therapy and speech therapy, among other benefits. This initiative will also assist families as they settle into their new lives as parents of children with congenital heart disease. The services will be deducted from a predetermined medical benefit to be used at the family’s discretion, and will act as an extension of the amazing care already offered at Levine Children’s Hospital. The HEARTest Yard fund will provide this option to families at no charge, while incurring no additional expense to the hospital. The goal is to establish a program that will improve the interstage mortality rate, increase life expectancy and long term prognosis. The HEARTest Yard Q&A With Greg Olsen LHM: I understand that your entire foundation and the programs within it have all sprung from first-hand experience with loved ones facing a serious medical condition or diagnosis. What have you found to be the most important attribute someone can possess when facing some of life’s greatest challenges? How have these experiences changed you? OLSEN: Through our experiences over the past 2 years we have grown so much as a family and as individuals. We have learned to appreciate the little things in life and continue to remind ourselves daily how fortunate we are to have each other. This attitude has allowed us to continue to move forward. LHM: Since the inception of “The HEARTest Yard” in 2013, in what ways have you seen lives changed? OLSEN: Since the inception of “The HEARTest Yard” program we have set out to assist both the care and quality of life for families of children born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Our program allows families to receive the specialized care required for their child while recovering within the home. Such treatments and therapies would, in most cases, be too expensive or unavailable to these families. We have also witnessed the dynamics of a family benefit. For example, by allowing a working parent to keep their current employment because of the extra set of hands provided to them at home to care for their child.

LHM: With the holiday season in full swing, what traditions do you and your family have that mean the most? OLSEN: The holiday season is always a special time for our family. It is a constant reminder of just how blessed we are to be together as a family and it allows us to spend quality time with both Kara’s and my family who come in town to celebrate together. LHM: What do you enjoy most about living in the Queen City? OLSEN: Since moving to Charlotte we have been blown away by how warm and welcoming the city has been to our family. Through our struggles these past few years the community support we have experienced has been tremendous and we are so happy to be able to call Charlotte home. LHM: If there was one thing you would want people to know about your foundation and “The HEARTest Yard”, what would it be? OLSEN: The one aspect I would like people to know about “The HEARTest Yard” is that it directly targets the specialized care required for children born with HLHS. The national average for interstage (time between first two surgeries) mortality is as high as 15%, and since our program has come into existence, the mortality rate at Levine Children’s Hospital has been 0. That is a number that continues to motivate us to expand these services to more patients both in Charlotte and throughout the country. LHM: With 3 children in the Olsen household, all 3 or younger, when do you find time to rest? OLSEN: Rest is not easily attained right now in the Olsen house. I am very fortunate that I have an amazing wife who takes so much off of my plate during a busy football season. Without her, our house would not function nearly as smoothly. She is an unbelievable mother and I am lucky to have her as my wife.
