DISCOVER: What inspired you to pursue a career in real estate?

ELIISA: I grew up in Sweden working at my stepdad’s restaurants starting at the age of 14; many evenings, weekends, and school breaks throughout high school. I explored several other careers; a physical therapy assistant, restaurant franchisee manager and selling wine and spirits to restaurants and retailers for over a decade. Real estate came to me at a time when I

needed flexibility. My two children were young, and I wanted to shift to a career with more flexibility and opportunity. Little did I know that this profession can be quite the opposite! I wouldn’t change it for anything though, I’m happy I took the leap of faith over 20 years ago.

DISCOVER: What sets you apart from other agents in Coastal Orange County?

ELIISA: There are many great agents in the area. I thrive when I can achieve my clients’ goals and it really comes down to experience, micro-local knowledge, passion, persistence, patience, negotiating skills and humility. Those are life-skills I try to work on daily.

DISCOVER: Can you tell us about any significant milestones in your real estate career?

ELIISA: I am not an agent that thrives or claims to be #1 this or that. I have served several hundreds of clients in the coastal OC, and each successful sale is a milestone. They are all equally important no matter who the client is, or how much the property is worth.

DISCOVER: What do you enjoy most working in this industry?

ELIISA: The people, for sure! The houses I am helping to sell are all special in one way or the other, but it’s the memories the people share and the stories I’m told that make me happy. And of course, managing the sale of someone’s most important asset is very humbling.

DISCOVER: Can you share a memorable success story from your career?

ELIISA: This might not be what you expect as almost every other sale of mine is a multi-million-dollar transaction. Last year, a past client and dear friend asked me to help her find a place for her brother. She wanted him to move back to CA from TX, as he had been homeless for years. Unfortunate life and family events had pushed him out of society, and he now lived in parks with his bike and books. She was supporting him with gift cards for food and a gym pass so he could shower. They are both in their late 60’s so she felt this urge to do something more permanent for him. We found the least expensive apartment in all of SoCal that needed a lot of work. She bought it, put him on a Greyhound and with his past contractor skills, he has now renovated the home and loves being back near his sister, visiting the library and biking around Long Beach. Closing that transaction wasn’t about the money, it was about believing in humanity and seeing both of their lives change for the better.

DISCOVER: How do you prioritize and manage your workload effectively?

ELIISA: I’m very lucky to have a team. We are a small “family”, and we can always count on each other’s support. I am with a fabulous brokerage, Surterre Properties, that has the best staff in the industry, innovative marketing, team-oriented agents, and a leadership that puts the agents and clients first. It makes it easy to serve every client as if they are my only priority.

DISCOVER: How do you stay updated on market trends and changes?

ELIISA: After 20+ years in the industry, I still have a business

coach. She keeps me accountable. There is no way you can stay on top of things on your own while managing a business. Change happens every day!

DISCOVER: What are your thoughts on the recent NAR settlement?

ELIISA: This will be a time of change. I think there will be turmoil until buyers and sellers understand the new norm. Representation is crucial and I strongly believe that both sides need to have their own agent. You wouldn’t hire the attorney that represented someone who sued you, would you? Opportunists will come out pretending they can just check the paperwork for a discounted fee, but that’s just like when the discount brokerages came and went. Every transaction is so complex and very few people can navigate it on their own. I think buyers might get misrepresented, or not choose to have their own advocate but they will learn quickly. I also think smart sellers will still choose to pay a buyer’s agent commission to get all eyes on their property. Eventually, it will all balance out and we will have a similar model that we see in other countries. Change is inevitable, you just need to keep ahead of it.

DISCOVER: How do you balance work and life?

ELIISA: I thought real estate would give me endless flexibility, income opportunity and freedom. In some ways it has, but honestly it is the toughest job I’ve ever had. Not always being there for my kids’ sports games or Girl scout meetings because of open houses, showings or negotiations that couldn’t be compromised, I missed out on some of those precious times. I try to make up for it now, traveling and visiting with my adult kids whenever I can. I love dogs, so fostering rescues has become a new passion. Also, yoga has helped me to get through stressful times. It’s the best therapy!

DISCOVER: What are your favorite things about Coastal Orange County?

ELIISA: I live in Corona del Mar so I’m blessed with a beautiful community where I can walk along the coast and enjoy the scenery, great restaurants, and shopping. I grew up in Scandinavia, so nature was a big part of my upbringing. We are so lucky to have that so accessible all year around!

DISCOVER: Do you have any future goals or aspirations for your career?

ELIISA: Yes, very simple… Serving more clients and making new connections in the community!
